Macomb Altrusa “Miss Macomb” scholarships in the news! A wonderful mention of the Macomb Altrusa scholarships for best platform essays by a “Miss Macomb” contestant was in the McDonough County Voice newspaper on Feb. 28. “Three scholarships will be given this year by the Altrusa Club of Macomb to the contestants with the best Platform Issue Essay. The top scholarship of $250 will be given to the winner and the two runners-up to this award will each be given a $50 scholarship by Altrusa. All the platforms will be judged initially by a committee of the Altrusa Club, and they will pick three. The morning of the pageant, before interviews, the judges of the pageant will pick the best Platform Issue Essay, and the two runners-up out of the three chosen by the Altrusa Club.”

In the March 3 issue of the newspaper in a story reporting the winner of the pageant, the Macomb Altrusa scholarships were again mentioned. See our Macomb Altrusa Facebook page for both newspaper stories! www.facebook.com/MacombAltrusa

“Just a minute with a member” Each month we will feature a Macomb Altrusan - to learn a little bit more about each other!

“Minute” by Sandy Collier, Communication Committee member Say “Hello” to Judy Kentner, our featured member of the month!

WHAT TYPE OF WORK HAVE YOU DONE IN YOUR LIFE? I worked in public accounting for many years and then for Compulist/On Time Printing for the final 17 years of full-time employment. Since “retirement”, I’ve had two part-time jobs and am currently doing some accounting work for the Western Illinois Tourism Office here in Macomb. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN? Some of the things I enjoy are antiquing, travel, flower gardening, playing cards, visiting with friends and, of course, spending time with my grandchildren. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH ALTRUSA? I joined Altrusa in 1979 and in the early years, I was much more active than now. I’ve held several different offices and served on all the different committees at various times. The first Bazaar I worked at was in the YMCA gym and had about 50 crafters. From there it moved to the Armory where the kitchen was a little “iffy” and now to what it has grown to at the Jr./Sr. High School.

TELL A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF I was born in Winnebago County in northern Illinois. In 1970, I moved to Macomb from Dixon, Illinois. I have two daughters. Lisa is married to Mark Rochford and they have a daughter Rachel who is 10. They live in Waterford, Michigan. Lora is married to Rick Meier and they have twin sons Philip and Thomas, age 12, and they live in Houston, Texas.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT BEING A MEMBER OF ALTRUSA? I think one of the best things about being an Altrusan is meeting different people and forming friendships that have lasted through the years. I believe Alta Sargent is the only current member still remaining from when I joined and it has always been a joy to see her at Altrusa activities and elsewhere.
