Karen’s Korner Happy Spring (okay, I am cautiously saying that :) ) It is hard to believe that it is already Spring Break and that tulips are coming up, you begin to see neighbors that you haven't seen most of the winter, and of course, you get to pull out those sandals and capris! There are so many exciting things happening with our club and I am so thankful for each of you. We have several upcoming projects that will be exciting and fun to be a part of. February 2016 Meeting notes

Slate of Officers for 2016-2017 This slate of officers will be voted on at the March meeting by all members. The Black Dragon Martial Arts Studio members were the featured speakers for our Feb. meeting program. They conducted a self-defense handson demonstration and club members learnt defense skills. Desserts served by the hosting Finance Committee.

Executive Board Minutes March 10, 2016

Service committee:

Below are the topics discussed at the Board meeting. Those in attendance: Penny Pollock, Paula Rhodes, Brae Huston, Heather Munro and Karen Iversen. Finance committee: -Buffalo Wild Wing's fundraiser will be held on April 6th from 4-9 p.m. -Discussion held about a painting fundraiser was discussed and Brae will look into more details. -Budget for 2016-2017 was presented to the Board and the Board recommends the budget be passed by the club. A huge thank you to the Finance Committee for all of the hard work on getting the budget ready! -Possible date for yard sale fundraiser-June 4th Membership committee: -Paula will be bringing 2 friends to the March meeting. -Brae shared that Liz Duvall had spoken about Altrusa at a Young Leadership course and several members approached Brae about learning more about Altrusa. Brae to follow up with membership packets and an invite to attend a meeting. Communications committee: - Last meeting was featured in the Macomb paper. -Discussed having adding "If you are interested in joining Altrusa please contact us at our email address...." to any press we might receive. This would be a good membership recruitment tool.

-Discussed collecting school supplies for the Altrusa District Conference service project. -Declined participating in the silent auction at Altrusa conference.

-Phi Kappa Phi would like us to help distribute the books they collect out to the community. Board approved of participating. -March service project was completed by Paula Rhodes, who delivered previously collected school supplies to our Adopt-a-Classrooms. -Discussion regarding the funds from the Alzheimer's Walk not staying in the area. The Board recommends that if a member has a great passion for raising funds for Alzheimer’s to continue to participate, as individuals. -Tevar walk is April 23rd. The funds raised go to Linda's fund and stay local to help cancer patients. The Board encourages members to individually participate and walk together. -The recipient of the Altrusa Nursing Scholarship has been chosen and Brae will send the check to the SRC Foundation. -Other scholarship forms are in progress. District Conference Service Project The Executive Board discussed and approved the Club participating in the District Service Project. Every year at the District Conference they have a Service Project that all conference attendees contribute towards. This year it is "Tools for Schools" of Carmel, Indiana. This program gives school supplies to needy children at the beginning of the school year in a backpack. Heather Munro will be attending the conference and will take our supplies there.

Please bring to the March meeting. This is a voluntary donation. You may bring school supplies or you may donate money and Heather will purchase school supplies. Types of school supplies requested by Tools for Schools:

Our next Fundraiser! Buffalo Wild Wings 1724 East Jackson, Macomb Use a Voucher and we get $ Vouchers sent as attachment to emailed newsletter/on our Facebook page too! Date: April 6, 2016 Time: 4:00pm – 9:00pm CARRY OUT OR EAT IN Buffalo Wild Wings Procedures You will take the vouchers and print them off or send them to others via email and have them PRINTED off. Buffalo Wild Wings does not accept vouchers over the phone - must present the voucher in the restaurant because they have to have the physical voucher attached to the guest receipt. BWW does not allow passing out vouchers in store or on BWW property. Altrusa will receive 10% of sales brought in on the day and times of our fundraiser. ***This does exclude taxes and alcohol. ================================== Yard Sale Fundraiser in the works! Save your Stuff! The Finance Committee is planning a spring yard sale as a fundraiser for the Tutoring Program. Please start saving items to donate to the yard sale! Further details will be forthcoming in later newsletter.

Service Committee The March Service Project was delivery of school supplies to Lincoln School. Members had previously collected school supplies back in September and now when supplies are low the Service Committee delivered much needed supplies to the school. April Service Project Please bring Yellow items to the March meeting for the April Service project. We will be collecting items that will used to create “Sunshine Bags”

Communications Committee Our February meeting was written up for the McDonough County Voice newspaper by our guest, Michelle Langhout. Also in the newspaper was an article about the Miss Macomb pageant and the Altrusa Club scholarship was mentioned. There was also a story about the Writing Women into History reception where Alta Sargent and others were honored.

for the MDH Hospice program. Please bring in anything yellow and cheerful: such as candy, stickers, lotions, snacks, mints, gum, smiley faces - PLEASE MAKE SURE THEY ARE YELLOW! Items will be collected and put in yellow Sunshine Bags for MDH Hospice patients and families. May project will be volunteering at the Public Library - Details to come!

Alta Sargent Honored! Charter member Alta Sargent was honored at the Writing Women into History reception given by the

It's time to decide "what Committee do you want to be on?" A sheet will be passed around at our March meeting for you to list your Committee preference for the President. On the Sheet you will list three committee preferences in order of your preference. Be aware that the President will try to honor your preference, but she may have to assign members to any committee that needs members - members must be evenly distributed to the 4 committees. Here are the Committees - every member must be on at least one committee and participate and assist with committee tasks and activities.

 Service Committee: Develop and manage projects in one or more traditional program areas, i.e. literacy or vocational services. Oversee new service projects. Develop a liaison with other local groups to complete a projected goal. Locally this may involve: Literacy, Tutoring, Scholarships, Make-a Difference, Mosaic, Snack bags, Adopt-a-Class, Ready bus, Memory Walk, Bowl for Kids, Nature Quilt, etc. plus helping other service clubs on request.  Chair is Paula Rhodes  Membership Development Committee: Is responsible for membership activities: recruitment, retention, leadership training, and/or disbursing Altrusa Information. Committee is responsible for: initiations installations, and club ceremonies.  Chair is Jeanie Sowers

 Communications Committee: Is responsible for public relations; bylaws, resolutions and recommendations. They are responsible for the newsletter, news releases, pictures, meeting announcements, presentations and scrapbooks.  Chair is Heather Munro

Finance Committee: Is responsible to request budget items from the club and prepare an annual budget (operating and service) for Board and Club approval. They pay approved bills, track finances, report income and expenses by project, and report monthly to the Board and the Club.  Chair is Brae Huston
