“Miriam’s Message” From Our President, Miriam Satern May marks the beginning of a new year for Altrusa International of Macomb. At our monthly meeting on May 22nd we will initiate one new member, Valerie Dugan, and install new officers, thereby bringing to a close my term of office as your president. I have enjoyed serving in this capacity and I appreciate the opportunity provided to me to lead the club for the past year. In this, my final newsletter message, I want to recognize the members of the 2012-2013 Board for all their hard work and service to Altrusa. Thank you for a productive and successful year! I also want to extend my appreciation to Board members whose terms will expire with the May meeting – Lynne Brinker, recording secretary; Heather Munro, corresponding secretary; Nancy Reed, past president; and directors Jackie Lucas, chair of the Communications Committee, Ann Abbot, chair of the Membership Committee, and Lynn Marlowe, chair of the Service Committee. I welcome Liz Duvall, the current president elect, to her new role of president for 2013-2014. Liz will benefit from the continued service on the Board of Marsha McCormick, treasurer and chair of the Finance Committee; Rosalie Severinsen, first vice-president; Heather Munro, newsletter editor; and Ann Abbot, in a new role as recording secretary. New to the Board are Club members that have served in the past – Cindy Roon, president-elect; Karen Iversen, director; plus Club members who will be serving on the Board for the first time – Kristi Kupka, corresponding secretary, and Penny Pollock, director. Indeed, we are in good hands with this new leadership team ready to assume their responsibilities. Please wear your blue Altrusa shirt to the meeting so we can take a group picture. The Membership Committee is planning a potluck supper. I look forward to seeing you at 6:00 at the Everly House. Again, thanks for the opportunity to serve as your president in 2012-13! Miriam
Minutes from April 24 General Meeting April 24, 2013 General Meeting Minutes Altrusa International of Macomb President Elect Liz Duvall called the meeting to order and we recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes of the March 27th meeting were approved as reported in the Cheerful Earful. The Treasurer’s report prepared by Marsha McCormick was published in the Cheerful Earful and will be filed for audit. The Chamber of Commerce newsletter was circulated. Correspondence received included thank you notes from Spoon River College students that
received our Nursing Scholarships as well as Spoon River College acknowledging our scholarships, and a thank you note from the Alzheimer’s Association. Standing committees gave the following reports: Communication – Jackie Lucas – No report. Finance – No report at this time. Membership – Ann Abbot – No report.
Service – No report. We should send a “thinking of you” card to Lynn Marlowe. Old Business: Judy Kentner moved and Nancy Dobey seconded the motion that the final 2013-2014 budget be approved. Motion carried. Sandy Collier of the Summer Tutoring Program reported that we have 8 tutors and 7 students at this time. Altrusa of Macomb mad a donation of $200.00 to the Macomb Library Capital Campaign. Picture of the presentation will be taken April 16th. Karen Trusley and Penny Pollock reported on the District Six meeting. They agreed that it was a good experience and that many other clubs had heard about us and our activities. Our newsletter was shown and we received compliments on our basket. The District was able to fill 50 backpacks for the military.
We need to keep track of our volunteer hours throughout the year. It was suggested that we do a hands on service project. The Canton and Quincy clubs would welcome an opportunity to get together with us. Happy Birthday, Altrusa of Macomb – March 14, 1961 (52 years old). Miriam Satern will be filling out the Club Activity Report - due by June 15th. Each of us should send our volunteer hours for Altrusa and volunteer hours for other groups to Miriam by that date.
New Business: Liz Duvall and Penny Pollock are presenting our Nursing Scholarships. Rosalie Severinsen requested everyone to check our data in the Directory/Year book for 2013-2014. There was some discussion about sending the Directory/Year book by email rather than printing it. More discussion will follow. The garage sale will be held May 17 (noon to 6) and May 18 (8 to 1). Clean-up will be May 18 after 1:00 p.m. Let Nancy Dobey know when you can work.
Marsha McCormick asked that we pay our dues of $70.00 by May 22nd. McDonough County scholarships are due April 30th. Karen Trusley, Cindy Roon, and Sara Featherlin will read the applications and a decision will be made. “Old” and “new” Board members are invited to attend the May Board meeting. The upcoming Mississippi Valley Blood Drive Adopt-A-Day for our club will be June 22nd. Please be sure to make your appointment.

All members -- please pay your annual dues! Treasurer Marsha McCormick wants to remind all members that dues are due! Dues must be paid by the May 22 meeting –please give checks to Marsha. Yearly dues are $70.00. Thank you! Reminder to all – PLEASE DO THIS! Our President Miriam needs all of us to send her an email listing all of our volunteer hours from June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013. She needs this info. for the official Annual Report. Your email should list the following: 1. Your name 2. Total number of hours spent volunteering June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013 for Altrusa 3. Total number of hours spent volunteering June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013 for ALL other activities you are involved in – you do not need to tell Miriam what you did – just the number of hours!
