Bazaar Improvement Notes While it is still fresh in everyone’s mind! Members are collecting “improvement” notes for reminders of do’s and don’ts and ideas to try out for next year at the Bazaar! If you have any suggestions, comments, ideas, or anything to note please send to Heather at hrmunro@yahoo.com and she is compiling the information. Comments to be shared in near future.

Remembering Rosalie Severinsen At every Altrusa District Conference, they hold a memorial service for members who have passed. Elaine Wolf, the District Treasurer organizes the service and she has asked me to gather information about Rosalie Severinsen for the service. She has Rosalie’s obituary but she asks if members have anything to add about Rosalie’s Altrusa history – what she meant to our club, her contribution to our history – Elaine Wolf would very much appreciate our thoughts and words about Rosalie so they can be shared at the memorial service. If you have something you would like to share about Rosalie please send to Heather at hrmunro@yahoo.com and I will compile the comments to be shared at one of our future meetings and at the District Conference memorial service. Thank you.

In our Community

Volunteering

Children’s Book Drive in the News!

Reading at PACT Headstart

Our Make-ADifference Day Project was in the McDonough County Voice newspaper! At our book drive members collected approximately 600 books to be given to the Wee Care Center and to the PACT Headstart.

During the fall, Altrusa members have been going once a month to read at PACT Headstart.

Reading at Lincoln Elementary During the fall, Altrusa members have been going once a month to read at Lincoln Elementary School. We read books purchased with the Adopt-a-Classroom funds we donated!

Festival of the Trees

Here is Altrusa member and Chair of the Service Committee Penny Pollock, as she met some of the children at Wee Care Center when she dropped off the books we collected during our Children’s Book Drive for Make-a-Difference Day. The children were delighted with the books and started looking at them right away! Good to know the collected books will be enjoyed! We love to support literacy in our community! Later Penny dropped another set of books at PACT Headstart. Thank you to Penny for taking the books to both locations! Thank you to all who donated and collected books!

Every year Altrusa members volunteer for the Festival of Trees – a fundraising activity of the McDonough District Hospital Auxiliary. We man the tables and take admission during the weekend and help the Auxiliary. Money raised will help with the Emergency Services expansion project at the hospital. Members will be volunteering on Dec. 6 and 7.

our daughter, Elizabeth, joined our Each month we will feature a Macomb Altrusan family.

“Just a minute with a member” - to learn a little bit more about each other! “Minute” by Sandy Collier, Communication Committee member

Say hello to Kathy Wyatt, our featured member of the month!

I returned to WIU to earn a Master’s degree in Gerontology. Then years later, life changed and Elizabeth and I moved to Macomb, where I was working with the Day Health Services program at MDH. About that time I met and married my husband Jim Wyatt. What do you like to do for fun? I love to garden, walk and knit. I also have one delightful granddaughter and another on the way.

Kathy, tell us a little bit about yourself!

How did you get involved with Altrusa?

I grew up in the Chicago area. I had several jobs after school, including a job with a small animal veterinarian. I was able to work with Dr. Abell for 6 years in high school and then on breaks when I went to college. I had a dream to become a veterinarian myself, but life got in the way.

I became involved with Altrusa because Nancy Dobey invited me to attend. I like to help people within the community and beyond. I have been on the Board and served a year as president. The thing I like best about Altrusa is the tutoring program. As a young student, I had trouble with reading and I believe that with a little tutoring, it would have made a difference in my education. Apparently, I figured it out finally by graduate school. Thanks to my sisters in Altrusa, students can face their concerns about subjects that stump them and overcome them with dignity. Keep up the great work, ladies!

What type of work have you done? At Western I majored in Animal Science, had a job at the library and was able to live in my sorority house. After college, I married another Ag major from Colchester. We farmed, raised hogs and cattle, and
