Great time at the International Literacy Day Poetry Party!

Thank you from the Lions Club! The Colchester Lions Club would like to thank the ladies of the Altrusa club, as they made a great impact on the Sunday afternoon of Labor Day in the food tent. We appreciate the ladies knowing the jobs that are needed to be filled and that you know what to do, as it is a testament of how many years we have been working together. Looking forward to helping with the Bazaar! Roger Hodges, Colchester Lions Club

Tutoring Program Update

To celebrate International Literacy Day the Altrusa Club of Macomb held a Poetry Party on Sunday, Sept. 7 at Grand Prairie Assisted Living. Residents and club members read poems and celebrated the joy of poetry and being able to read! There was laughter, there were tears. Some poems were funny, some poems were sad - but we all celebrated together and it was grand!

Sandy Collier, Jean Sowers and Karen Iversen (left to right) met to evaluate this year's tutoring program and begin plans for next year. The final report for this year's tutoring program will be sent to all members at the same time as the newsletter. The report presents an overview, an expense report of the program, comments made on parent evaluations and suggestions for consideration for the program next year. All members should review the entire Tutoring Program Final Report, as this is our most significant literacy project of the year. All Photos by Jean Sowers, Altrusa member.

“Just a minute with a member” Each month we will feature a Macomb Altrusan - to learn a little bit more about each other! “Minute” by Sandy Collier, Communication Committee member

Say Hello to Judi Dallinger, our Featured Member of the Month!

What type of work have you done in your life? I have always been a teacher. I taught one year in high school in Omaha, NE. (between my master’s and doctorate work.) I was on the faculty at WIU for 33 years before retiring this May. I worked for and in academic administration at WIU for many of those years, either part or full time.

Judi, tell us a little about yourself: I came to Macomb in 1981 as a young assistant professor in the Communication Department at WIU. It was my first job out of graduate school. I met my husband who was here on the faculty in our department, and we had two daughters, who are now also both working on their Ph.D.’s.

How did you get involved with Altrusa?

I am from Yale, Iowa…a small town of about 300 people in central Iowa. It was a great place to grow up!

What do you like best about being a member of Altrusa?

My husband retired from WIU in 2006 and is now teaching at the Univ. of Maryland. I expect I will visit him more often now, but we will continue to live in Macomb as our home.

I remember asking Rosalie about Altrusa when I learned she was a member. I had been to the bazaar several times, and thought that seemed like a fun thing. Rosalie was my sponsor when I joined. I have been a board member, treasurer, president, and committee chair. What do you like to do for fun? I like to knit, sew, read, cook, and travel.

I have really enjoyed getting to meet women who I probably would not have met otherwise. I also am proud of the ways that we can support our community.
