News SILAL SIGNS AN UNPRECEDENTED EXTENSIVE SUPPLY AGREEMENT WITH BARAKAT Silal, Abu Dhabi’s new Agritech and fresh produce company, recently signed a supply agreement with Barakat, the prominent producer and distributor of fresh juices, and fruits and vegetables, to provide the latter with substantial supplies of fresh fruits and vegetables grown in Abu Dhabi. Under this agreement, high-quality fresh produce grown in Abu Dhabi will be available across the UAE through Barakat’s extensive product range and network.

His Excellency, Eng. Jamal Salem Al Dhaheri, CEO of Silal said: “Silal is keen to work with partners to offer a diversified range of highquality, locally grown produce at competitive prices. This agreement is an endorsement of our capabilities as a leading supplier of local fresh produce and recognises the mutual commitment of Silal and Barakat to supporting local farmers and homegrown produce. As the first step of a strategic collaboration with Barakat, this agreement advances Silal’s objectives to boost technology-enabled production of local, fresh produce and to support

ADQ’s efforts in enhancing the local food supply value chain.” Kenneth D’Costa, Managing Director of Barakat said: “This partnership is in line with our philosophy of serving the “Best of Fresh”. It enables us to leverage our supply chain capabilities to promote local produce consistent with our commitment towards sustainability. ANDES RAISES USD 15 MILLION IN SERIES A FUNDING CO-LED BY LEAPS BY BAYER AND CAVALLO VENTURES

Leaps by Bayer, the impact investment arm of Bayer AG, announced that it has co-led a USD 15 million Series A investment round in agriculture and biotechnology innovator, Andes, with Cavallo Ventures. Other new investors Builders VC, Germin8, Accelr8 and Wilson Sonsini participated, alongside existing investors KdT Ventures and Endurance. Through its novel seed treatment technology, called ‘Microprime’,

Andes is reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers. The California-based company has developed a process for seamlessly integrating seeds with a unique library of microbes that colonize the seed’s root structure. This kick-starts a process known as biological nitrogen fixation, enabling the crop to draw down nitrogen from the air instead of relying on synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. By developing self-sustaining Microprime seeds, Andes reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers, which require huge amounts of energy to produce and account for 3%, or 1.5 gigatons, of global greenhouse emissions. In enabling microbes to ride along with the seeds as they get planted, Andes’ Microprime technology provides a highly scalable solution that saves

4 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

growers time and money. The first generation of Microprime treated corn seeds will provide the equivalent of 30 to 50 lbs/acre of nitrogen through biological nitrogen fixation. The company is creating second generation microbes that target doubling the amount of nitrogen provided by the Microprime seeds. Andes is also developing microbial strains for nature-based permanent carbon capture solutions to sequester and store CO2 from the atmosphere into the soil. This initially focuses on capturing carbon via microbial-powered corn crops. If deployed successfully at scale, it could capture gigaton-levels of carbon from corn and other crops. With the world’s total annual greenhouse gas emissions estimated to be 50 gigatons, nature-based carbon capture could make a sizeable contribution to global decarbonisation.

DAIRY COOPERATIVE FRIESLANDCAMPINA CELEBRATES 150 YEARS FROM ‘GRASS TO GLASS’ FrieslandCampina one of the largest dairy cooperatives in the world, marked 150 years since its inception. To

celebrate this momentous milestone, FrieslandCampina’s anniversary flag was raised at all its production locations across the world on 8th September. The United Arab Emirates was the first country within the Middle East in which FrieslandCampina decided to commence its journey in 1955. It started to introduce products within the evaporated milk category, popularly known today by its flagship brand name ‘Rainbow’. Previously, refrigerators did not exist

and the Evap package would tolerate high temperatures, which made it an essential product in every household. Currently, the company has a strong presence all over the Gulf countries and North Africa. Rainbow milk is the main ingredient of Karak tea, which is the most preferred beverage in the GCC and India sub-continent. It’s such a significant ingredient that a vintage can of Rainbow milk is displayed at the Dubai Museum. In addition to the Evap packaging, Rainbow

NEW LOOK S450 TO INCREASE BOBCAT LOADER LEADERSHIP IN MEA Bobcat has launched a new version of the company’s market-leading S450 radius lift path skid-steer loader, introducing Bobcat’s bold new branding scheme for the first time in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) market. The new Bobcat S450 skid-steer loader is designed to further strengthen its unrivalled Number One position in its own class and in the MEA compact loader market overall, where the company has a market share of over 50%, reaching as high as 80% in some MEA countries. The new Bobcat 3D decals that the S450 now carries for the first time in MEA emphasise the well proven Bobcat track record for very reliable equipment and maximum uptime. This gives customers in construction, rental, agriculture and general industry in the region the confidence and peace of mind to always carry out their work in a timely and productive manner. It also helps to explain why Bobcat has continued to sell an average of well over one thousand S450 machines every year in the MEA

market, since its launch over six years ago. Gaby Rhayem, Regional Director Middle East and Africa at Doosan Bobcat EMEA, said: “The new S450 introduces a fresh look for our market-leading loaders in MEA. As well as being the most popular skid-steer loader in the region, the S450 is far and away the most reliable and as a result has the highest resale value on the market. A used S450 with 4 years/4000 h on the clock will typically sell for 60% of the original price, representing an unbeatable return on investment for our customers.“ The S450 continues Bobcat’s betterbuilt reputation with a range of features to minimise maintenance and to protect the machine such as machine shutdown

protection, self-diagnostics and battery run-down protection. In addition, the S450, like all Bobcat skid-steer loaders, utilises the industry’s only maintenance-free chaincase, which further reduces maintenance and provides even more peace of mind. This is further reflected by the extended Two Year (2000 Hour) Standard Warranty that is now available from Bobcat for the S450 and all other new Bobcat compact loaders in the MEA market.

ARRIGONI: AGROTEXTILES ALLOW TO GROW BERRIES EVEN IN NON-NATIVE CLIMATES Arrigoni, a leading group in the design and production of agrotextiles for agriculture, held a workshop during the Italian Berry Day on Macfrut, the international fruit and vegetable exhibition that took place at Rimini Fiera from 7 to 9 September. Giuseppe Netti, agronomist, and Technical Sales Support of Arrigoni, held a conference entitled "Cultivating berries in non-native environments – Protective screens for every environmental need",

arousing great interest among the public. In fact, berry fruits are experiencing a phase of great success at an international level: the increase in interest in the organoleptic properties and health benefits of these fruits has led, in the last decade, to double the turnover in the world, generating around 2 billion euros, with more and more producers wishing to cultivate them locally. However, not all climates are suitable for the cultivation of small fruits, which are particularly delicate and suffer from high temperatures, excessive radiation, rain, hail, and insects. For these reasons

DUBAI-BASED F&B PROFESSIONALS, THE FRENCH DAIRY BOARD AND THE EU HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABILITY

Representatives from the Dubai food scene have to come together to discuss and understand the importance of food sustainability during an event organised by the French Dairy Board and the European Union. The roundtable was part of an initiative launched by the French

Dairy Board in 2020, with the support of the European Union, a campaign created to highlight the need for sustainable development within the French dairy sector. It covers the entire dairy supply chain by focusing on four key areas of sustainability performance, including economic & social, food

8 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

safety, food nutrition, and responsible production (animal welfare and the environment). With the UAE importing billions of dirhams of food every year, there is still an opportunity to be sustainable. French cream follows strict production rules, so despite being exported around the world, this highquality product is still incredibly sustainable thanks to the measures that have been implemented in France. Attendees at the event included many of the leading lights in the Dubai food and beverage scene, including Orit Abdurahman, founder and CEO of Boon Coffee Roaster; Sophie Corcut, Brand & Sustainability Manager at Spinneys; Kathy Johnston, Chief Chocolate Officer of Mirzam Chocolate; and Omar Shihab, Sustainability Lead, General manager, Founder of BOCA DIFC.

NEW RESEARCH WILL HELP AFRICA’S SOYBEAN FARMERS Africa’s economies are growing. More people are joining ‘the middle class’ and spending more money on better food for themselves and their children. Demand for poultry, eggs, milk and soy pieces are growing significantly. Many of these foods depend on soybeans and cereals as the key feed ingredients. Insta-Pro provides high-quality equipment designed to process soybeans in the most effective, science-backed methods possible. Soybean production in Africa is increasing every year. However, a problem is to be overcome: most soybean cultivars are bred for North and South American conditions that don’t match African soil and climate environments. For the region to become self-sufficient, this challenge must be overcome. This is where programs like the Soybean Innovation Lab come in.

Soybean Innovation Lab (SIL) is a project led by the University of Illinois which is bringing change to African soybean growers. SIL researchers are working with soybean breeders to improve soybean cultivars specifically for African environments, to create fast-maturing lines that increase the number of harvests and in turn increase farmers’ profits.

14 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

Guillermo Marcillo from the Department of Crop Sciences at University of Illinois says: “It is important for producers and breeders to know when a cultivar is going to mature at that moment when a plant is at full capacity and performing its best. We were motivated to fill in gaps of knowledge around maturity timing in Africa.”

PHILIPS LEDS IMPROVE QUALITY AND APPEARANCE OF LETTUCE AT THE TEPLICHNYY STATE FARM IN RUSSIA Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting, has completed its easternmost project in Russia at the Teplichnyy state farm in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. The company equipped the greenhouses for growing lettuce with Philips GreenPower LED toplighting. As a result, the quality and appearance of the crop significantly improved: making leaves crisper, more compact, and with a better taste, while reducing electricity consumption by 20%. In November 2020, Philips GreenPower LED toplighting with an intensity of 210 µmol/m2/s were installed on the entire area allocated for growing lettuce. These grow lights were supplemented with Russian HPS luminaires SVETOGOR RX-7-H-600W-S / PILA, equipped with EPRA and Signify’s lamps. The lamps and LED modules were placed in a staggered order. The use of LED lighting makes it possible to fulfill one of the state farm’s main tasks, which is to ensure the lettuce can grow despite the lack of sunlight - the Sakhalin region’s snowy winters prevent sunrays from reaching the plants.

Additionally, the LEDs produce much less heat than standard HPS lights, enhancing the quality of the plants as most of the electricity is spent generating light rather than generating heat. Signify developed a dedicated light recipe for the lettuce culture, in which the blue spectrum prevails. It has a short wavelength and a huge amount of energy, contributing to the growth of the root system and leaves. Results of the test period show that the state farm produces a better harvest of lettuce, with leaves that are more smooth, dense and bright. The size became more compact, and the percentage of

16 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

plants with tip-burn decreased. This reduces the number of defects, extends the shelf life and facilitates the commercial value of the product. At the same time, it reduces the electricity consumption by 20%, while at the same time decreasing the amount of water consumed during irrigation. The state farm has set itself another ambitious goal – to shorten the growth cycle. On average, one growth cycle takes 35 to 39 days, but modern LED lighting systems can reduce this to 32 days, resulting in more crop cycles in the same time frame and higher yields for the grower.

News event to offer a complete overview of complementary sectors despite their own peculiarities. MEAT-TECH, for this special edition, is an essential part of what can be defined for all intents and purposes the kilometer of innovation, where visitors will find transversal answers to their needs in terms of products, technology and solutions. Transversal nature is also the character of the content offer of MEAT-TECH 2021. Within the "Innovative Food Talks" program, the focus will be on Veggie Dairy, Veggy Ready Meals and Italian Veggie Patty, with three events scheduled for Saturday 23 rd, Monday 25th and Tuesday 26 th October, organized in collaboration with Hi-Food, a company specializing in plant-based additives and ingredients.

NAKED BEANS PLUS MERISTEM REPLANT PROTECTION: AVOIDING BIG COMPANY “SHELL GAMES” AND ONESIZE-FITS-ALL Meristem Crop Performance is offering a first of its kind soybean replant program – part of Meristem’s continuing effort to treat farmers fairly and bring more innovative thinking to the crop input supply chain. Mitch Eviston, Meristem Founder and CEO, announced the offer during the Farm Science Review in London, Ohio. “It’s time to give farmers a way to save money at the farm gate by buying their beans naked and customizing their seed treatment for a much lower cost,” explains Eviston, “We had an outstanding pilot program and look forward to reaching many more farmers for the 2022

season,” He says it’s Meristem’s continuing effort to disrupt an agricultural supply chain that often gouges farmers with hidden costs. “Many times, when buying seed, farmers face a big company bundled-up, blackbox shell game where the value of germplasm, traits and seed treatment are hard to figure,” says Eviston. By creating a replant program that fits with a seed company’s untreated or “naked” soybean policy, he says, Meristem will bring savings to more growers with RACEREADY Complete, Meristem’s premium seed treatment product. “We can save farmers money and give them more choices, but to do that, they must demand their soybean seed suppliers sell them seed without treatment,” he says. “This replant offer will make it even easier to move away from suppliers that limit farmer options.”

decay. “We are leading the transition from the use of traditional clamshells for packaging fresh berries to leaner, greener and more attractive top-seal solutions,” notes Gary Ward, Ph.D., Business Development Manager for StePac. “This shift is designed to award multiple benefits. Firstly, it generates as much as 25-30% reduction in plastic use as it is a leaner product compared to the commonly used clamshells. Secondly, it is fully recyclable and thirdly, it provides shelflife extension properties, enhancing food quality while reducing waste, all of which fall in line with our sustainability strategy. Last, but not least, it also ensures food safety.”

Space Review

SPACE 2021: A GREAT EDITION FOR STARTING AND MEETING AGAIN!

T

he 35th edition of SPACE, inaugurating its new format, was held from 14 to 16 September, in person, at the Parc-Expo in Rennes, and continued on 17 September in a digital version. After two years without a physical edition due to the health crisis, this edition was a great success: 1,118 exhibitors, including 323 international exhibitors, welcomed 74,772 visitors, including 4,629 international ones. SPACE is pleased and proud to have given rise to these exchanges, which took place in a very positive atmosphere. All of the livestock farming family were finally able to see each other again at their show and there were many smiles.

26 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

This return of SPACE also symbolises the resumption of activity in the events sector, which has been severely impacted by the health crisis. SPACE 2021 was the first and only worldwide trade show this year for all animal sectors. It is a strong sign of encouragement for all event organisers who have to resume their activities in difficult conditions due, in particular, to difficulties in recruiting staff. We must therefore commend the collective efforts of all the teams who overcame all the obstacles and who remained confident in organising this show. More than ever, SPACE has fulfilled its mission to farmers and exhibitors. Its fundamentals, which describe it

as a professional, international and friendly trade show, have been confirmed or even strengthened this year. The multitude of exchanges, the modernity of the presentations and the booths and the many innovations presented illustrated the dynamism and the ability to adapt and listen that guide the development of our livestock farming sectors. The visit of the Minister of Agriculture, Julien Denormandie, for the inauguration of SPACE, allowed professionals and sector managers to discuss the crucial issues that are relevant. These exchanges were like those that took place between exhibitors and visitors: highquality, in-depth, and committed to the future of our agriculture

September-October 2021

Space Review in its diversity. SPACE has been, once again, an exceptional platform for presenting innovations with 35 Innov’SPACE winners, including 5 special mentions. These products, services and equipment have illustrated how these companies are constantly looking for new solutions to offer working tools to farmers that improve their working conditions while ensuring animal welfare. By placing the theme of Espace for the Future under the sign of welfare shared between farmers and their animals, this 35th edition has allowed professionals to express themselves on this subject, thus bringing more rationality to the discussions. Thanks to this space for demonstrations, testimonials and round tables by sector, the question of welfare has been at the heart of exchanges and discussions. This Espace for the Future, implemented with the expertise of the chambers of agriculture, has made it possible to highlight the constant and daily concern of farmers for the welfare of their animals. It also highlighted the need to always make it known, explain it and share it with citizens, while highlighting the economic aspect of these issues for farmers. Despite the constraints linked

September-October 2021

to the health context, the difficulties of travelling and obtaining visas, international visitors were present at this 2021 edition. Several international delegations, in particular from several West African countries, made the trip. The Livestock Farming Ministers from Mali and Senegal, at the head of their delegations, were thus able to explain their needs in terms of training, equipment and genetics, to meet the food needs of their countries and to find suitable solutions for the work of their farmers. This participation, which was unexpected at the time of preparing the show a few months ago, is proof of the importance and role of SPACE as a facilitator of links, but also as a provider of solutions to answer fundamental questions concerning food sovereignty at local, regional, national and global level. The animal presentations and competitions were very busy over these three days. The Normande breed and the Rouge des Prés had pride of place this year. The Genomic Elite sale, unique in the world, also enjoyed great success in an unprecedented format both in the SPACE ring and remotely, thanks to digital. These SPACE highlights illustrate the high level of technicality of our

genetic know-how for farmers. Throughout these three days, the friendliness of the exchanges and the happiness of being part of the large farming family have also shown that farmers and SPACE are kind-hearted. An unprecedented action symbolises it, since the proceeds of the milk collection day on Wednesday 15 will be donated to the Food Bank. This action was carried out thanks to the joint action of Solaal, Food Banks, and Agriculteurs ont du Cœur [Farmers have Hearts]. SPACE has been very happy to see you at the Parc-Expo in Rennes and will see you again in 2022, from 13 to 15 September, in person, and on 16 September, digitally. Between now and this new get-together, to extend discussions and keep in touch, find the content and relive the highlights of the show on uk.space.fr, on digital.space.fr and our mobile app: app.space.fr. Also visit SPACE’s “Podcast Area” on the website and on the app. You will find all the show’s live broadcasts on innovation, food sovereignty, generational renewal, etc. On SPACE’s digital tools, you can also find some replays taken from the programme of the hundred or so conferences that took place during this 2021 edition.

gardeners. In addition to our complete professional substrate lines, Lambert is now proud to offer a new growing mix that will become a reliable alternative to the classic bulk mixes available on the market for nurserymen. The Nursery Mix is an exceptional option over common bulk products due to its superior well-balanced components like coarse grade of Canadian sphagnum peat moss and Lambert’s

exclusive EcoPeatPlus+®, a natural wood fiber. The Nursery Mix provides an exceptional ratio of air space and water holding capacity as well as a high drainage property, very useful after a severe thunderstorm or several consecutive rainy days. These characteristics are made possible by the special matrix created by EcoPeatPlus+® with sphagnum peat moss. There are many benefits to consider using the new The Nursery Mix. First of all, the high-quality consistency of the mix, which has undergone a complete quality control process before reaching the market. You are sure to receive a top-quality product every time! Our quality control department performs continuous sampling and analysis during every mix production. Each sample is analyzed for pH at three different incubation stages and the same for the electrical conductivity. Particle size distribution, moisture content and yield complete the criteria we constantly evaluate. We make sure that each cubic foot of the mix is in full compliance with all of our specifications. If any of these points are not completely met, it will not be released for delivery by our laboratory staff. Only a highend product will leave our site!

Additionally, The Nursery Mix is offered in compressed bales, so you can be assured of getting the exact volume on every order versus bulk product in a dump truck that will be compacted along the road. The possibilities of contamination are also eliminated by the protection offered by the bale packaging. The fact that the mix can be compressed gives you the opportunity to save on freight costs so you can load twice the volume on the trucks. As EcoPeatPlus+® is harvested from the peat bog and has been buried under acidic and anaerobic conditions for centuries; these conditions create an extremely stable product that will not shrink in a container. During growing production this will eliminate the task of adding more substrate to the containers every now and then. In addition, since The

September-October 2021

Nursery Mix will not deteriorate for a long period of time, much less fine particles will be generated to thereby maintain the integrity and porosity of the substrate. Really useful for keeping your drainage! No matter where you are, one of our sales representatives is nearby. Most of them are experienced growers or have owned nurseries in the past, they are ready to listen to what you are experiencing and will assist you to find the perfect solution and resolve any issues. Perhaps you need a special formulation for a specific crop. A lot of growers ask for a specific pH or special additives. You may want a “standard” mix with a little more perlite, or a little bit less. At Lambert Peat Moss we offer a really wide range of custom blend options. We produce a custom project nearly every day. We can respond to almost every special

Irrigation

GROWSTREAM™ WORLD’S ONLY IRRIGATION SYSTEM THAT TALKS TO THE PLANTS

I

WHAT MAKES RDI GROWSTREAM™ THE WORLD’S FIRST PLANTRESPONSIVE IRRIGATION SYSTEM IS ITS MICROPOROUS TUBE THAT IS INSTALLED SUBSURFACE NEAR THE ROOT ZONE

rrigation increases agricultural yields and outputs and helps to stabilize global food production. The roughly 17% of the world's cropland that is irrigated produces over one-third of the food and fiber grown globally. Irrigation’s importance in the global food system is expected to increase. Approximately 250 million hectares of land are irrigated worldwide, a five-fold increase relative to the beginning of the 20th century. Water security is a powerful concept that is still in its early days in the field of nutrition. This water crisis is driven by rapid population growth, economic growth, and urbanization that, in turn, increases domestic and irrigation water demands. While water availability is a straightforward physical phenomenon, access is more complex and is shaped by structural and individual characteristics. Considering its importance for global food production and food security and considering its implications for the quality and quantity of water resources, effective irrigation water management

32 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

is a global priority. Whether or not current levels of irrigation are sustainable, and whether additional irrigation is possible, clearly depends strongly on the availability of water supplies. Based on these factors, RDI’s GrowStream™ was developed over the past decade and has been launched globally. It is the only irrigation system that talks to the plants. GrowstreamTM is a precision irrigation system that is driven by mother nature, delivering water when the plant interacts with the system. As a result, healthy, faster plant development occurs, increasing crop yields

and leading to food security, while reducing water and energy consumption. The system does not require complex flow/ ET calculations. There’s no electricity or controllers to program. It's simple to install and maintain. There’s no root intrusion, no clogged or blocked emitters, and the need for hydrozones is eliminated. What makes RDI GrowStream™ the world’s first PLANT-RESPONSIVE irrigation system is its microporous tube that is installed subsurface near the root zone. It is made with a unique combination of hydrophobic and hydrophilic

components, which holds water in the tubing at a very low pressure, releasing water only by the interaction of plant root exudates with the system. This unique feature of this innovative irrigation technology made it an ideal choice for adoption in many projects across the Middle East, Pakistan, India, Europe, and Africa. RDI is proud to have initiated some challenging projects in the desert regions of the UAE to convert sandy, non-farmland into arable land that can produce vegetable crops. Beginning with the 5-hectare sweet corn project and a vegetable project of

September-October 2021

3-hectares with Alfafa farms in Al Khattim, the project is undergoing soil preparation and the installation will begin between September and October. Jan Gould explains, “The power of our plant-responsive technology and our innovation to help plants adapt to extreme temperatures will clearly establish the impact of RDI’s disruptive technology, which will forever change crop production in the desert. For generations, the people living in water-scarce, desert regions have had to diligently work and strive to create productive farmland in the harshest of environments. It remains RDI’s mission to work with people

from every country to introduce GrowStream™ to meet increasing food production demands and conserve water, the planet’s precious resource that’s essential to all life.” RDI has also been involved in system installations with progressive companies in the UAE that are implementing new technologies to increase food production and the quality of produce in the UAE, including an installation at Alfafa Greenhouse for 3200 tomato plants and for Emirates Hydroponics in Al Rahba, growing Baby Rocca using RDI’s GrowStream™. In another upcoming UAE project, RDI will be working in collaboration with SILAL to install GrowStream™ in November 2021 at Al Foah Organic Farms in Al Ain, which will have the RDI system installed to irrigate 650 Date Palms in a comparative study against drip irrigation. A mixed garden plan of fruit trees,

vegetables, herbs, and flowering plants will be installed for Hadeer Agriculture, which will have this exhibit design plan implemented at the villa of Eng. Khalid Naeem who is planning to begin distribution of the RDI system in the Al Ain area. These projects will compare RDI GrowStream™ against the leading irrigation technologies, demonstrating GrowStream’s™ ability to transform desert regions to green, crop producing land. As urban areas grow with

rising populations, communities around the world must prioritize waterconservation in green spaces to ensure enough water resources are available for the Earth’s growing population. Jan Gould’s commitment to leverage RDI’s technology for the planet’s future is finally taking shape, injecting much needed hope for a sustainable future for her grandchildren – and their 8 billion fellow global citizens. Vertical Farming

REVOLUTION IN INDOOR AEROPONICS FARMING, BY NEW EDGE TECHNIQUE CALLED: REVOPONICS, DEVELOPED BY FLORA CONSULT Written By: Praveen Sharma, Flora Consult

T

he world is abuzz with Indoor Vertical Farming, especially in the developed countries. The Indoor Farming has got fancy of global investors. The world indoor vertical farming business is growing at 23% CAGR, and expected to cross US$6 billion by 2026. The ability of vertical farming to produce high-quality herbs, fruits, and vegetables throughout the year will positively influence the market revenue. Revoponics is advanced Vertical Aeroponics Technique, which has resulted in huge cost saving on capital investments

and operational costs of the Indoor Aeroponics Farms. Why Indoor Vertical Farming: • World Population Growth The planet earth has limited agricultural land, and population is ever growing. According to United Nations Population Division (2009), the world population will increase from about 7.85 billion to 9.8 billion by 2050 or an addition of about 2.0 billion more people to feed. • Agriculture Consumes 70% 0f worlds water WWF - notes that agriculture wastes 60% of the 2,500 trillion liters (1,500 trillion liters of water) it uses

each year; or 70% of the world’s accessible water. • US, China, India, Pakistan, Australia and Spain have reached, or are close to reaching, their renewable water resource limits. • Growth in Urban Population The percentage of urban population will likewise increase from 50.46% in 2010 to 68.70% in 2050. It is expected that world population will continue to increase. Currently, the rate of growth per year is about 80 million. • Agriculture Land ReducingThis is Alarming New Delhi: In India cultivable land is gradually shrinking, making the agricultural future of this highly populous country bizarre. Latest data from the Agricultural Ministry shows that as many as 20 states reported decrease in cultivable land to the extent of 790,000 hectares in four years from 2007-08 to 2010-11. • This decline of almost 200,000 ha per year, is bound to go up with new era of development, infrastructure, roads etc. • Limited Land for Agriculture This is a major concern because the land area of the Earth is limited only to about 13 billion ha, in 2008, the total agriculture area in the world was about 4.88 billion Ha (FAPSTAT,2010) Introduction to Aeroponics Growing Technology: • The art of Aeroponics Growing has been adjudged as most advanced system of growing various crops. The research by NASA has

36 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

September-October 2021

Vertical Farming

concluded this method as one of the most suitable method of growing veggies on Mars. • Aeroponics growing systems provide clean, efficient, and rapid grow production. Crops can be planted and harvested in the system year round without interruption, and without contamination from soil, pesticides, and residue. Since the growing environment is clean and sterile, it greatly reduces the chances of spreading plant disease and infection commonly found in soil and other growing media. • Aeroponics systems can reduce water usage by 90 percent, fertilizer usage by 60 percent, and pesticide usage by 90 percent, all while maximizing crop yields. Plants grown in the Aeroponics systems have also been shown to uptake more minerals and vitamins, making the plants “healthier and potentially more nutritious.” Low Energy Consumption. The AGT ( Aeroponics Grow Towers) offers high production per sq m of greenhouse area. The plant population can be increased to five to ten times plus as compared to prevalent horizontal hydroponics. The cost per plant of

climate control of greenhouse reduces due to high plant population. The AGT offers a cooling tower effect, due to showers falling repeatedly from as high as 10 feet. This reduces the temperature of the Nutrigation water. Based on our experience and results obtained by various international agencies, we found Aeroponics is most cost efficient in terms of quality, quantity and ease of growing. NASA has shortlisted this method of growing for their Mission on Mars. The product grown under this system command premium in the market. The Challenges: The Aeroponics has great advantage on energy saving, when it is compared to any other hydroponics growing method. The Indoor Aeroponics faces similar challenges as any other growing method, i.e. High cost of Lighting and Climate Control. High Capex (Capital Expenditure): The Indoor Farms require huge investments on infrastructure, like Pre Engineered Buildings,

Air conditioning, Hydroponics Equipment, Artificial Lighting, CO2 enrichment, sensor based climate control etc. High Operational Cost: The cost of growing under Indoor Vertical Farms is exhorbitant due to high energy consumption. The biggest consumption of energy is artificial lighting and climate controls. What is Revoponics: The need is mother of invention. Flora Consult is engaged in raising Indoor Vertical Aeroponics Farm. It was realized the biggest limitations for the success of an Indoor Farm is high capital cost, followed by higher operational Cost. Revoponics is most advanced Energy Efficient Vertical Aeroponics Technique, where in plants grow with Aeroponics Technique, while rotating around an axis. Revoponics is a sustainable Technology for Indoor Aeroponics Farming. For more information, visit www.floraconsult.com

NEW HOLLAND AGRICULTURE GROWING ITS HERITAGE IN MIDDLE EAST

N

ew Holland Agriculture is always close to its customers, ready to provide the broadest product offering in the world and the solutions they need. The Brand is ideally placed to meet the growing demand and specific requirements of Middle East markets and its rich heritage is marked by important milestones in this territory. There are key macrotrends that are disrupting the way business is made across Middle East. The development of the agricultural sector is limited due to harsh climatic conditions, poor water management and soils but overcoming these challenges is the most important way to address sustainable development goals on environment and food security. The demand for agricultural investment has increased in the last few years and Qatar is one of the key markets making noteworthy strides in agriculture and landscaping. With this growing demand, farms are under development to be equipped with agricultural machinery. Despite the climate conditions in Qatar, one of the biggest landscape turf farm in the world has been built in order to provide high quality turf and trees for the venues of the World Cup 2022. The landscaping and turf management of the stadium has also created a demand on the small size agricultural machinery, and it is expected to leave a lasting environmental

and sustainable legacy after the tournament in the country. New Holland Agriculture through its local distributor in Qatar, Al Nakheel Agriculture & Trading WLL has brought a broad range of mechanized solutions to help to improve the market and meet these needs. Boomer tractor range is one of the mechanized solutions that has been delivered to Qatar on this regard and reached a milestone in its segment. Boomer: More efficiency and productivity in the same compact package The Boomer range packs a bigger performance while maintaining its compact size for

small horticulture and agriculture applications, homeowners, rural life stylers, landscapers, golf courses, municipalities, and hobby farmers. It has been extended with two new Class 3 models, the 41 hp Boomer 40 and the 47 hp Boomer 50, so that it covers the power segment close to 50 hp. The more powerful offering further increases the Boomer’s versatility, as they can take on with greater ease and the most demanding operations typical of this range – from mowing to transport and other duties such as light tillage, sweeping, snow clearance and general maintenance.

The new Boomer range also enhances operator comfort and reduces fatigue with a host of features. On the Boomer 50 model with hydrostatic transmission, Cruise Control is available as standard. From glasshouse to field and from orchard to vegetable production, the efficient mechanical transmission the Boomer 35, 40 and 50 have the performance the customer demands. The Boomer 25, Boomer 35 and Boomer 50 models with hydrostatic transmission are available with the EZ Speed function, which coordinates the forward hydrostatic pedal and engine speed, resulting in

greater efficiency and versatility. When the operator activates it and the hand throttle is in the low position, the engine will speed up when the hydrostatic pedal is pushed. This ensures they have the right engine speed and the right ground speed available whenever the operator needs it. This is very useful in applications where, for example, the operator wishes to maintain a low noise level when the tractor is stopped and increase engine speed only when the tractor begins to move. The function can also be deactivated, enabling the operator to manage independently the hand throttle

lever and hydrostatic pedal in PTO applications where they need to maintain a specific engine speed in order to ensure the required PTO speed. Sports turf demands specialized care and maintenance. New Holland Boomer tractors are offered in the Class 2 and Class 3 sizes with respective outputs of 38hp and 41 or 47hp. The Boomer 35 model can be specified with a 12 forward and 12 reverse speed mechanical transmission, the larger Boomer 40 and Boomer 50 offers a 16 forward and 16 reverse speed transmission in addition to a three-range hydrostatic. Highly efficient, mechanical transmissions have a direct link between engine speed and forward speed which is ideal for heavier applications to include aeration and cultivation. The hydrostatic variant is ideally suited to top dressing, spraying, seeding and fertiliser application owing to its smooth and precise operation. The 4 cylinder deliver a powerful performance, with outstanding torque back up which reaches 140 Nm @ 1600 rpm in the Boomer 50. The larger radiator and cooling fan further enhance the engine’s efficiency. The Boomer’s high versatility in all applications is supported by the extensive choice of tyres which includes agriculture, and high flotation tyres for turf. New Holland Agriculture will continue to offer a full range of products and solutions to meet the demand in Qatar and across Middle East. As a business enabler, sustainability will help to provide a real competitive advantage going forward while protecting natural resources for future generations. Animal Nutrition

THE EXPERT’S CHOICE IN MINERAL NUTRITION MINTREX® IS THE MOST BIOAVAILABLE TRACE MINERAL OPTION, MEANING IT DELIVERS THE MOST PRODUCT TO THE SITE OF ABSORPTION. THIS ALLOWS FOR THOSE LOWER INCLUSION LEVELS TO BE MET WITHOUT SACRIFICING PERFORMANCE OF THE ANIMAL

M

INTREX® is the only worldwide commercially available bis-chelate on the market for use in animal feed that contains HMTBa as the ligand, providing additional benefit. MINTREX® is the most bioavailable trace mineral option, meaning it delivers the most product to the site of absorption. This allows for those lower inclusion levels to be met without sacrificing performance of the animal. The simplest way to explain the differences is by understanding the bonds surrounding the mineral: in the case of inorganic trace

40 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

minerals (ITMs), it is an ionic bond that creates the mineral salt through opposite charge attraction. In an organic trace mineral (OTM), a much stronger covalent bond is what binds the mineral to a ligand, improving its bond strength through electron sharing. But even within OTMs, it is important to understand that there are significant differences. What sets MINTREX® apart is two things: 1) the mineral is chelated, meaning there are four coordinate covalent bonds surrounding each mineral; 2) the ligand is HMTBa, which provides benefits in and of itself once

it separates from the mineral in the small intestine and is absorbed. The neutral charge achieved with the structure of the MINTREX® molecule makes it less reactive to antagonisms ensuring that the mineral reaches the site of absorption. Due to its properties, MINTREX® bis-chelate provides more bioavailable zinc, copper or manganese for superior animal performance: reproduction, tissue integrity, immunity, meat quality and environmental footprint. Silage

SWITCH TO 60% LESS PLASTIC FOR MORE SILAGE, BETTER SILAGE

S

ilostop announces a new way of covering silage that reduces plastic usage by 60%, reduces Dry Matter loss, increases aerobic stability, and makes your farm more sustainable. It is generally accepted that reducing plastic usage on farms is a great goal. One area often overlooked is the silo; newer Oxygen Barrier Films can reduce traditional plastic usage by over 60% while generating more and better silage. Traditionally a producer uses one 120-micron black plastic sheet over top a 40micron underlay film. Both are single-use plastics, making a minimum of 160 micron of plastic used annually. When calculating that thickness over the average bunker size of 12m by 20m, one gets a sense of the monumental amount of plastic disposed of each year. On top of the double layer system, covers and tyres have been used to keep the plastic safe from

42 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

physical damage. Not only does the double layer system use more plastic; it also entails more labour. And the worst part is that often, farmers will still have to toss inches of spoilage before feeding their silage out. There is a better way. In the last decade, true Oxygen Barrier Films were developed. Using only one 45-micron plastic sheet and a composition which prevents oxygen ingress, these films keep oxygen out of the silage. They maintain the forage in much better condition than the traditional cling film and black sheet combination, whilst also decreasing dry matter losses and spoilage. This technology reduces total plastic usage by 60% annually. Silostop Oxygen Barrier Films have been trialed and tested worldwide with impressive results when compared to the traditional films. “Switching from two layers of film at 160 microns, plus a cover and tyres, to one

layer of 45-micron Oxygen Barrier Film and reusable Anti-UV Covers and Gravel bags has great results,” says Rob Gaze, technical manager, Silostop. “Not only is plastic usage reduced by 60%, but incidents of wires disease drop down to nil, forage nutrients are improved, and spoilage on the top one metre and shoulders is almost non-existent. There will even be savings on the recycling levy, as only one thin sheet needs recycling.” Silostop was the first company to develop Oxygen Barrier technology for agriculture. We worked alongside farmers and experts in the silage sector over a decade ago and have since continue to innovate and expand worldwide. We are committed to reducing plastic usage in the ensiling process and making our products as sustainable as possible. All Silostop products are fully recyclable.
