UAE RATIFICATION OF MP14 BOOSTS THE GLOBAL FIGHT AGAINST UNRULY PASSENGERS

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) welcomes the United Arab Emirates (UAE) ratification of the Montreal Protocol 2014 (MP14), a move that will strengthen the global legal deterrent against unruly and disruptive passenger incidents onboard flights.

“IATA welcomes the leadership shown by the UAE in ratifying MP14. Not only will this give the UAE authorities important new powers in dealing with unruly passengers that land in the country, but as a major aviation market and ICAO Council member, it will also encourage other States to

ratify MP14. Ensuring greater international harmonization and strengthening the legal deterrent against unruly and disruptive passengers who pose a threat to passenger and crew wellbeing and safety onboard is a priority for the entire airline industry,” said Kamil Al-Awadhi, IATA’s Regional Vice President Africa & Middle East.

Effective from 1 May, authorities in the UAE will have the jurisdiction to manage unruly and disruptive passengers that land in the country, irrespective of where the aircraft is registered. This resolves an existing gap in international

aviation law that often results in those accused of unruly behavior from being prosecuted for their misbehavior. In a survey, 60% of IATA member airlines cited lack of jurisdiction is a key factor for why prosecutions do not proceed.

Unruly and disruptive passenger incidents on board flights include physical assault, harassment, smoking or failing to follow crew instructions. These incidents may compromise flight safety, cause significant delays and operational disruption, and adversely impact the travel experience and work environment for passengers and crew.

MIDDLE EAST AIRPORT DEVELOPMENTS ENTAILS US$151 BILLION IN CAPITAL EXPENDITURE UNTIL 2040

After most of the multi-billion dollar airport construction projects were put on the back burner or temporarily curtailed over the past three years, operators and investors have been racing down the tarmac as the Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions are expected to account for 58 per cent of the global air passenger demand in 2040.

The CAPA - Centre for Aviation, one of the world’s most trusted sources of aviation market intelligence, says there have been 425 major construction projects at existing airports, with US$450.7 billion in total committed expenditure globally, each of which is at various stages, from preparatory

to about to conclude, along with 225 new airport projects and airport investor numbers swelling to 1074, including 258 airport operator groups or consortiums. Its database has region-wise listed the total numbers of the airport project and the volume of investment include 155 in Middle East worth US$209.4 billion.

The Middle East region, positioned at the strategic crossroads of major economies of Asia, Africa and Europe, has transformed into a major international hub and continues to be an inspirational growth story. With over 110 airports, this is already among the fastest growing in the world, accounting

for 170 million of the global traffic.

Airports in the Middle East will need to invest US$151 billion in capacity expansion as the global air passenger demand is expected to increase more than two-fold in 2040. “This necessitates an investment totaling US$2.4 trillion for Middle East and AsiaPacific airports until 2040 to accommodate this growth,” the Airport Council International said. The ACI forecasts close to 19.7 billion passengers are expected to traverse the world’s airports by 2040 and the Middle East airports will handle 1.1 billion passengers by 2040 – a significant increase from 2019’s 405 million.

30 YEARS AT ATM HIGHLIGHT THE AIRLINE’S INNOVATIVE OFFERINGS AND LATEST BENCHMARKS IN TRAVEL

Emirates is poised to showcase its latest roster of innovative products and fan-favourites at this year’s 30th edition of Arabian Travel Market, which gets underway on 1 May.

A milestone year for the event, which is celebrating its third decade of connecting the travel industry, this year also marks Emirates 30th year of partnership and commitment to ATM.

When the exhibition first opened its doors thirty years ago, Emirates flew 15 aircraft to 30 cities and carried close to 2 million passengers. Today, Emirates is the world’s largest international airline serving over 140 destinations on more than 200 wide-body aircraft,

connecting tens of millions of travellers across the globe each year, and making Dubai one of the most globally connected cities for travel, tourism and business.

Over the years, the airline’s presence has expanded and evolved at ATM. In 2007, Emirates unveiled its huge ‘Globe’ stand, a captivating three-storey spherical structure which literally ‘turned’, featuring  the airline’s industry-first private suite in First Class on its Airbus

A340-500 in a specially recreated area.  Later, the 9.5 metre tall structure focused on the airline’s tremendous network expansion featuring Emirates destinations, and on the fringes of the stand, its cabin products on the A380 and Boeing 777 across all classes, as well as its sports sponsorships around the world.

GLOBAL HOSPITALITY PROVIDERS HEAD TO DUBAI AS REGIONAL INDUSTRY PLANS MULTI-BILLION INVESTMENTS

Major worldwide players will gather in Dubai

this May (23-25 May) at The Hotel Show – the undisputed flagship for, and gateway to, the Middle East’s multi-billiondollar hospitality industry – as the Middle East plans new developments to meet accelerated tourism ambitions.

Running at Dubai World Trade Centre, the Hotel Show comes against a regional upsurge of hospitality investment driven largely by the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

“Saudi Arabia alone needs to accommodate the 100 million tourists it hopes to attract by 2030 with a hotel pipeline valued at US$110 billion while the UAE hospitality market is expected to expand by 25% over the same period adding a further 48,000 rooms to its room stock. This offers unprecedented opportunity for developers, equipment and product suppliers, designers and operators,” said Elaine O'Connell, Vice President of Design and Hospitality at dmg events, show organiser.

The scale of the opportunity has attracted major players

from throughout the Middle East, Europe, the Far East and Americas, all with an eye on winning new business with innovative products and services. The major upscaling of the region’s hospitality potential has seen the show organisers, dmg events, expand the event’s profile with new content, features, and inspiration across three key industry verticals - Hospitality Technology, Operating Equipment & Supplies, Food & Beverage Equipment and HORECA which is shaping up to be core industry driver attracting major names including Danube Hospitality,

22 | TRAVEL BUSINESS ASIA & ME APRIL - JUNE 2023 THE HOTEL SHOW PREVIEW

Egyptian German Porcelain, Incode, Groupe GM, Everstyle and Shiji Group and Rapid Supplies Middle East.

The event will also dig deep into the regional hotel prospects through probing conferences, seminars and features which will help industry professionals unearth the opportunity sweet spots.

“For years, the Middle East has been a change influencer for the sector and its willingness to quickly address game-changing issues signals that it intends to retain that mantle. Coupled with the excitement around ongoing regional developments, the growing regional drive to net zero, increasing data regulation and the need to meet rising consumer demands for greener facilities and services, the region, and The Hotel Show Dubai, are again at the fulcrum of sectoral change,” added O'Connell.

Knowledge sharing is a key event focus. More than 100 experts will take to the event’s conference stages. Pressing sector issues will be aired at The Hospitality Leadership Forum.

HITEC Dubai, in partnership with Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP), the recognised voice for hospitality’s finance and technology segments, will put

breakthrough technologies and their transformative promise under scrutiny and explore four primary themes: touchless guest experience, AI & BI in the hospitality industry, sustainability and green technology and revenue optimization.

And in one of the most important public gatherings of regional housekeeping professionals, the often ‘unsung’ heroes of hotel servicing will convene for the UAE Professional Housekeepers Group Meeting. This interactive meeting will feature in-depth discussions and tutorials on maintaining excellence in the face of new market conditions including shifting guest expectations, emerging technologies, techniques, regulations, and products.

The show will also host The Emirates Culinary Guilds’ fifth ‘Chefs Table’. Nine culinary teams from some of the regions’ leading hotels will go head-tohead over three days to produce a stunning five course meal in the hope of winning the coveted title of ‘Hotel Culinary Team of the Year.’

Upwards of 13,000 industryrelated professionals from investors and owners, F&B specialists, procurement

decision-makers, designers and specifiers are expected to attend the show. Meanwhile, show attendance is expected to benefit from its co-location with the Leisure Show, the one-stop exhibition for the Middle East’s dynamic fitness, spa, and gym sectors, which brings owners and operators together with equipment distributors and suppliers. The show has areas dedicated to sport & fitness, wellness & spa, and recreation & adventure.

Also co-located alongside The Hotel Show Dubai and The Leisure Show will be HITEC Dubai, the world’s largest hospitality technology event, INDEX interior design show and Workspace – the premier event for workplace technologies, with over 28,000 visitors expected to attend all co-located shows.

“The trade shows running alongside each other form a powerful quartet of information, products, services and supplies that inform the wider hospitality and leisure sectors, meaning visitors can maximise their time and exhibitors can network and unearth new opportunities for partnerships and collaboration,” explained O’Connell.

SHARJAH TO HIGHLIGHT THRIVING SUSTAINABLE ECO-TOURISM SECTOR AT ARABIAN TRAVEL MARKET 2023

The emirate of Sharjah is gearing up to showcase its thriving sustainable eco-tourism sector at the upcoming Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2023. The event, scheduled to take place between 1-4 May at the Dubai World Trade Centre, will focus on sustainability issues within the travel and tourism industry, with its theme being “Working Towards Net Zero”. Solidifying its standing on the global tourism map as a major player in the region, Sharjah is set to spotlight its competitive and innovative edge in the sustainable ecotourism industry, while opening the doors for new collaboration opportunities with other global tourism destinations.

SCDTA will be overseeing the emirate’s pavilion that will showcase the offerings of 20 Sharjah Government and private entities participating under the Authority’s umbrella, including Sharjah International Airport, Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIOH), Sharjah Department of Awqaf (Awqaf), in addition to Sharjah Sports Council, Sharjah Classic Cars Club, and BEEAH Group.

Additionally, several private entities from the tourism, travel and hospitality sector will participate in the Sharjah pavilion. These entities include Sharjah National Hotels, Sharjah Airport Travel Agency (SATA), Air Arabia, Holiday Travel and Tourism, and Cozmo Travel, in addition

to the Nova Park Hotel, the Copthorne Hotel Sharjah, Sheraton Sharjah Beach Resort & Spa, Occidental Sharjah Grand, the ACT Hotel Sharjah, Golden Tulip Hotel Apartments, Lou’Lou’a Beach Resorts, and Trav Talk.

On 3 May, at 12:00 PM, the SCTDA will hold a press conference at the Sharjah Pavilion, located at ME2210 in Hall 2. Commenting on the participation, HE Khalid

Destinations APRIL - JUNE 2023

Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of SCTDA, said: “Our participation in ATM 2023 comes as the emirate’s tourism sector is experiencing a boom which was reflected in hotel occupancy rates. The sector registered a 16% growth in hotel guest numbers last year, reaching a total of 1.4 million hotel guests, while the hotel occupancy rate reached 66%, supported by the diversity of destinations and experiences offered by the emirate to its visitors.”

He added, “ATM’s sustainability pledge and the event’s focus on exploring sustainability in travel aligns with Sharjah’s commitment to a more sustainable future, expanding its ecotourism destinations and further investing in this

sector, which is becoming increasingly popular among tourists who prefer these types of destinations. We expect it to have a prosperous future among other tourism sectors in Sharjah.”

Sharjah’s tourism sector growth was particularly evident in the 161% increase in the number of GCC visitors in 2022 compared to 2021, mainly from Oman and Saudi Arabia, in addition to other countries from Asia and Europe. This signs a promisingly strong recovery in the tourism and travel industry after the pandemic, with restrictions and precautions being lifted. The sector is expected to see continued growth in the next two years.

Bialowieza Forest is also one of the most famous, out of 23, National Parks in Poland. It is the only primeval forest in Europe where the European bison dwells. Untamed nature and forest wildlife are best to observe from an education trail that meanders through the terrain. The other parks to be discovered in the nearby area are Narwianski and Biebrzanski National Parks. But to discover the beauty of the biggest national parks, you do not need to travel far from Warsaw–the Kampinowski National Park border with the city.

PORTUGAL WELCOMES YOU IN 2023

Looking for fresh inspiration for your 2023 travel plans?

Look no further:

Portugal has 7 regions, all different despite the country’s tidy size, that offer a wide variety of experiences. There are many reasons to put Portugal at the top of your travel list; here are some good ones to get you started:

Lisbon and Porto

If you have only a few days, Lisbon and Porto, the two Portuguese largest cities, are extremely attractive and interesting. Lisbon has a special radiance thanks to reflections off the Tagus River and the Atlantic Ocean. Porto, an ancient city whose historic center is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, lies at the mouth of the Douro River, famous for its valley of vineyards that produce the famous Port wine.

Sun, Beach, and Sea

The Atlantic Ocean creates a climate with very sunny summers and mild winters, making Portugal a destination renowned for sun and sea throughout the year. In fact, the Portuguese coast is almost one single beach extending more than 850 km, yet with a diversity of accompanying

landscapes.

Walking and cycling trips

The Natural Parks and Reserves, Geoparks, and Biosphere

Reserves recognized by UNESCO have ensured that Portugal is much in demand for enjoying outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling and has well-marked trails for all levels of fitness.

Paths of Faith

The Portuguese Road to Santiago, the Paths of Fátima, and the Jewish Legacy are increasingly sought out by those who like walking to focus on knowledge, nature, and culture.

Surfing

On the mainland, Madeira, and the Azores alike, the Portuguese coast offers great waves every day. Surfers of all abilities find excellent beaches here, such as Peniche, Nazaré, and Ericeira, that make surfing a 365-day-ayear activity in Portugal.

Golf

Portugal is internationally renowned as a top golf destination. Excellent courses in stunning settings in the Algarve and Lisbon regions, a mild climate year-round, and our friendly welcome and understanding of golfers

make Portugal an amazing destination for golf.

World Heritage

The 26 UNESCO-listed sites in Portugal portray the history, cultures, and traditions of those who have inhabited the land, from the time of the cave dwellers, through the centuries, to the vibrant country it is today.

Gastronomy

Portugal’s cuisine and its excellent chefs are greatly appreciated. The country’s location and proximity to the Atlantic ocean explain the prominence of fish and seafood in the diet – and these taste even better when enjoyed with a selection from the huge variety of top-quality local table wines and finished off with a Port or Madeira, accompanied by a Pastel de Nata.

The People

One thing that tourists notice most when they visit us is the hospitality and friendliness of the Portuguese, who are always ready to help if they are stopped on the street and asked for information. Perhaps it’s the sun that gives Portuguese people a sunny disposition to welcome everyone to enjoy the country. Portugal welcomes you in 2023!

WHITEWATER AIMS TO HELP KSA DEVELOP SUSTAINABLE WATERPARKS

ith the Saudi Green Initiative working to protect the environment and increase the country's reliance on clean energy, it’s essential that the Kingdom incorporates sustainability practices across all sectors and throughout every step of all mega and giga-projects being implemented in the country.

Jeremy Gray, VP Business Development of WhiteWater, a leading manufacturer and designer of aquatic entertainment, said:

“WhiteWater has helped develop parks since the very start of the industry more than 40 years ago and it aims to help accomplish the Vision 2030 goal of establishing more than 600 entertainment attractions

Win the Kingdom by 2030. Our ongoing relationship with the best-loved entertainment brands in the region and the world is a testament to our commitment to guests’ and clients’ success.”

An established name in the themed entertainment and leisure industry as well as internal processes, WhiteWater aims to play its part in making Vision 2030 projects more environmentally friendly. The Kingdom, with several megaprojects underway, has the unique opportunity to set a global benchmark in best practices to achieve its Vision 2030 goals of sustainability.

Sustainable Water Parks

For any upcoming project, taking a sustainable journey is a must and when it comes to making an entertainment park sustainable, you need world-class designers

to identify how they can work effectively with Mother Nature.

“Well-designed water slides can help mitigate water loss and power consumption, resulting in more eco-friendly operations and cost savings. Most of the water used in water parks can be recaptured and recycled,” Jeremy said.

“By prioritizing sustainability in every step of the process, starting with better feasibility planning while in the design process, having more consideration of the materials used, and during construction, we can better protect the planet and create the most environmentally responsible water parks in the world,” he added.
