Meet Natalie. She’s 22. She supports her mum as a carer and we support her. She’s not your average Joe. And this isn’t your average apprenticeship. As a carer, you build qualities any employer should treasure. Empathy. Patience. Determination. But even so, we know that breaking back into work can be difficult. That’s why our Apprenticeships only look for potential – just like we found in Natalie, current Higher Apprentice. Find out how we can help at joinus.barclays.com/apprenticeships

Last year’s Liverpool Pride was incredible. The festival location of St George’s Quarter proved an extremely popular choice with festivalgoers so we’re thrilled to be returning for 2017. The theme for this year’s free two day festival is International Love. 2017 marks 50 years since the decriminalization of homosexuality, that is something to be celebrated, but also reminds us of the hard work which needs to be done to achieve equality in the 75 countries around the world where it is still a crime to identify as LGBT+. The Liverpool Pride March will play a major role in the weekend’s International programme, starting at 12pm Saturday from St George’s Plateau. Internationally renowned banner artist Ed Hall will collaborate with local artists Oly Bliss, Ben Youdan, Sophie Green and Brian Hanlon to deliver striking art banners forming an integral part of the march. We’d like to invite everyone to march with us. To register visit http://liverpoolpride. co.uk/march-registration/ We welcome Barclays as our headline sponsor, who we’ll be working with over the next 12 months to deliver a community partnership beyond the event, allowing us to collectively deliver

real impact for the LGBT+ community. On Saturday, we have three stages filled with exciting and varied entertainment headlined by Atomic Kitten . We also have amazing local, national and international artists, including Kym Mazelle and Livin’ Joy. Head to page 30 for more info. Manchester Airport, sponsors The World on One Stage, located on St Georges Plateau. Cultural organizations from across Liverpool will showcase international music and culture from across the globe. Look out for our volunteers selling raffle tickets – you can win a fantastic holiday to San Francisco for two people, courtesy of Manchester Airport. Sunday sees the return of We Are Family, in addition to a fully packed main stage, we welcome and encourage families to join us with entertainment targeted at all age groups including fair rides and inflatables for the small ones. Go to page 34 for our full family friendly Sunday line up. Liverpool One hosts LGBT+ exhibition with a bright and prominent display of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans + and Straight Ally information, photos and imagery, supported by the

Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner, the High Sheriffs Fund and Stop Hate UK. We’re teaming up with Barclays to showcase the Straight Allies programme, encouraging support for the LGBT community across Liverpool. Come Out of The Shadows will return in 2017 with buildings around the region and around the world lighting up in rainbow colours to show their support for the LGBT community. Keep an eye on our social media for more details #COTS. The Pride Team would like to especially thank our headline sponsor Barclays, Barclays Spectrum as well as Manchester Airport, Radio City and Signature Living. A very special thank you must also go to all of you who have volunteered, fundraised and supported Liverpool Pride over the last 8 years. We couldn’t do it without you! On behalf of the Liverpool Pride team, I would like to welcome you to our 2017 event an invite you to have a fabulous, fun-filled and safe time celebrating equality for all within our community and around the world. Liverpool Pride literally shone a light on diversity by illuminating iconic buildings and structures across the Liverpool City region in the colours of the iconic rainbow to raise awareness of LGBT+ hate crimes and to showcase Liverpool as a visibly LGBT+ friendly City. Come Out of the Shadows spans the Liverpool City region, is a three year initiative and is Liverpool Prides biggest campaign since it’s launch back in 2010. Funded in part by the Police and Crime Commissioner, Liverpool Pride is inviting new organisations and public buildings to show their support and become part of the 2017 campaign.

Michael Carey from Liverpool Pride explained: “It is our vision and longterm goal that we make Liverpool the most visibly LGBT+ friendly city in the UK – and with the support of key organisations and partners we can do just that. The Come Out of the Shadows campaign provides a beautiful backdrop yet underlying has a serious message to help raise awareness of LGBT+ communities and hate crime. Liverpool Pride rejects discrimination in any form and we hope to shine a light on this issue.” Launched in 2016, the initiative was a huge success and received considerable support from local partners who lit over 30 iconic

buildings and structures across the city region including: civic buildings, bridges, business premises, the Liverpool Wheel at the Albert Dock and Liverpool Football Club to name a few. Locally this was well received with the campaign receiving recognition from Merseyside Police, Liverpool City Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner who recognised the strength in our approach and message. Social media views were global and we now want to build on this success in 2017.

Back again in 2017, Liverpool Pride is exploring new opportunities to light up and by using creative approaches hopes to make bigger, more positive and beautiful displays symbolising equality, acceptance and tolerance across the Liverpool City region and potentially beyond. This campaign allows the city’s to shine bright and show itself, both inwardly and outwardly, as inclusive and diverse whilst educating and normalising LGBT+ in all its forms helping to make our City a safer place for all LGBT+ residents and visitors alike. Our approach is subtle, powerful yet unavoidable. It raises interest, attracts news coverage and encourages debate. Such public displays are quite often shown in responses to hate crime attacks on our community, but this in contrast is a proactive statement that is a celebration of unity at a time when many people maybe feeling less secure. Come out the Shadows will be launched on 20th July and will illuminate the City until the end of the festival on 30th July. Please make sure to keep an eye out for the campaign and please take photographs and share and tweet them to send our message wide and far. The city’s world famous Liverpool Football Club is supporting Come Out of the Shadows after successfully lighting the Kop stand at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium last year. Similarly, some of Liverpool’s most famous and recognisable buildings have also pledged their support again in 2017 including: St George’s Hall Liverpool; Liverpool Central Library; the Everyman theatres; FACT; Royal Court Theatre Liverpool; World Museum Liverpool; ECHO Arena; Merseyside Police Headquarters; Liverpool John Lennon Airport; James Street Station and Barclays Bank to name a few. Discussions remain ongoing and the full list of participants will be released through local press and social media channels. Merseyside’s Police Commissioner Jane Kennedy commented: “I’m thrilled to support Liverpool Pride’s Come Out of the Shadows campaign. By lighting Liverpool’s most recognisable buildings with the colours of the iconic LGBT+ rainbow flag, we will send out a powerful message that Liverpool is diverse, Liverpool is tolerant and Liverpool supports its LGBT+ community. “This message will shine out, not only to the residents of this fantastic city but everybody that visits here for work or for leisure. In a world where homosexuality is still illegal in more than 75 countries and many gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people live with oppression every day, this campaign will send a message of hope and of solidarity to people across the country and around the world.”

New Font Celebrates LGBT+ Visionary Gilbert Baker The Rainbow Flag is an internationally recognised symbol for the LGBT+ Community which fills streets around the world during Pride celebrations acting as a symbol of freedom and equality. The flag was designed in 1978 by San Francisco based artist and gay rights activist Gilbert Baker. Consisting of eight colours the Rainbow Flag reflects the diversity of the LGBT+ community. The colours included are hot pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, indigo and violet. They represent sex, life, healing, sunlight, nature, magic/art, serenity and spirit.

Baker played a key part in defining the modern LGBT+ movement with his creation of the Rainbow Flag at the forefront. Creating the flag in 1978 alongside a collective of 30 volunteers who hand dyed and stitched the first two flags, Gilbert refused to trademark the design insisting that it must be freely available as a symbol for the LGBT+ community around the world. In 1994 Baker relocated to New York City where he continued his activism, creating the world’s largest Rainbow Flag in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots. In celebration of the Rainbow Flags 25th Anniversary (2003) Baker created a rainbow flag stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Coast in Key West. Following the celebration sections of the flag were sent to 100 cities around the world.

For full information and times of performances please see liverpoolpride.co.uk

Gilbert Baker died at home on the 31st March 2017, aged 65. Following his death California state senator Scott Weiner described him as having “helped define the modern LGBT+ movement.” In honour of his activism and his contribution to the LGBT+ community around the world NewFest and NYC Pride partnered with a designer to create ‘Gilbert’ a rainbow font which can be found throughout this brochure, inspired by Baker’s Rainbow Flag design. We invite you to raise your Rainbow Flags high in the air throughout Liverpool Pride in honour of a true visionary who paved the way for the LGBT+ community,

I am extremely proud that Merseyside Police are part of Liverpool Pride. We have a role to play in the operational policing of large events, however Pride affords us a unique opportunity. By being part of the march, we are visible in our stance against discrimination, Transphobia, Homophobia and all forms of hate, whilst at the same time I want our LGBT+ staff to know that being themselves is what creates a truly diverse workplace, where difference is welcome and valued. We have been part of the march since Pride began and each year we have seen our group grow and grow, with last year being our biggest to date. It was a wonderful privilege for me to lead our contingent last year and will be again this year as the experience was a hugely proud moment and certainly a highlight of my career. To have the honour of addressing the crowds and share our key messages with you all is a brilliant opportunity for me and I look forward to seeing you all again this year. Merseyside Police stand together with all our communities and we will take action against any criminal behaviour which seeks to undermine society, especially where crimes are motivated by hate. Communities defeat terrorism and other criminal behaviour, which is why we need to work together, the public and police. We depend on information from the public, who at times like this are our eyes and ears, to keep us all safe. If you get caught up in the rare event of a weapons attack we urge you to follow the Run, Hide, Tell advice (www.nactso.gov.uk) and if you do see any suspicious activity, call the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321, or in an emergency always call 999.

They provide appropriate advice, encouragement and support, specifically for people who are underrepresented* within the current make-up of our force, with the aim of developing a diverse workforce which meets the needs of our multi-cultural society. For further information about Positive Action Support, please contact the Positive Action Team by emailing positive.action.team@merseyside.pnn.police.uk Please come and speak to our officers and staff, have a photograph taken, come and experience our new police with pride car and share in this wonderful celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans+ lives in this great city *Underrepresented groups in Merseyside Police include those with a Disabilty, Ethnic Minority Groups (i.e Asian, Black, Chinese, Polish etc.), women, Minority Religious groups (i.e. Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhism etc.), Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual (Sexual Orientation), Transgender (Gender Identity).

Merseyside Police is committed to developing a Police Service that is reflective of the diverse communities that we serve. In order to achieve this, we are proud to use Positive Action and have a Positive Action Team, who assist in facilitating the recruitment of Police officers, Special Constables, Police staff, Volunteers and Cadets from under-represented groups. Ben Youdan: Portrait of Michael Causer On display at News from Nowhere during Liverpool Pride Michael Causer was a young man whose life was brutally cut short in a violent homophobic attack. This painting seeks to provide a visual narrative of this tragic event in an uncompromising way. The background collage to Michael’s face is made up from images of him contrasted with examples of homophobia sourced from graffiti in the street and social media The violence of the attack is manifest in the red paint splatters evoking bloodshed and the smashed glass. This brutal imagery and text is contrasted with the glitter and the flowers and sit uneasily.

For 2016, supported by Arts Council England and Writing on the Wall, we were able to run a literacy project offering support and publishing opportunities to new and emerging writers from the LGBT+ community.

Through the project, 13 new writers, supported by published author Helen Sandler shared, wrote and performed their experiences of being LGBT+ in Liverpool.

As part of the course, the group collectively wrote a joint piece entitled ‘We Are Pride’, which captures and reflects their experiences of a typical Liverpool Pride event:

WE ARE PRIDE What’s Your Pride Story Group 2016 The whistles scream Above the crowd As they joyfully proclaim We’re out, loud and proud A day of freedom To be open To be seen Hold hands with whoever Relax, be obscene

There’s nowhere to hide at Liverpool Pride Freedom is fun when mixed with flamboyant creativity With a chance to be surrounded by colourful positivity You can only gain entry to Pride If you are dressed as a Sparkly rainbow unicorn One weekend-long group hug We thank the ones that came before us And fight for the ones who will come after us Giving and receiving love Sweat washed my face of makeup

but I couldn’t care less

There’s nowhere to hide at Liverpool Pride Seeking Shelter in the shaking portaloo Skinny straight girls push prams and sniff poppers Dear lord we’ve been infiltrated by orange-faced shoppers It pissed and hair gel ran down my neck But I’m loving life and I don’t give a feck A Jack Russell in a rainbow scarf Protesting Christians who make me barf Brandishing bibles on Castle Street corner calling: ‘Daughters of Babylon, sons of Jezebel, You’re all going to hell’

There’s nowhere to hide at Liverpool Pride Leather boys shock English sensibility With their human dog bound in chains Four drag queens get into their drag car at Pride The inflatable slide It’s a devil to climb But we manage it somehow And yes this is Pride A girl in the Superstar says I’m a work of art She crowns me with flowers and steals my heart

There’s nowhere to hide at Liverpool Pride

This writing forms part of collection, including works entitled; ‘Escape’, ‘Saturday Night, Mazzie Night’, ‘Mum’, ‘Dead Like a Dandelion’, ‘Dark Days’, and ‘God’s Rainbow Special Angels’. This eclectic mix of real life experiences has now been published and it will have you laughing and crying in equal amounts. The book is still available to buy whilst stock lasts and priced at only £3, ‘What’s Your Pride Story’ can be purchased at Liverpool Pride’s merchandise stall, News from Nowhere or by contacting us at www.liverpoolpride.co.uk.

Liverpool Pride welcomes its Straight Ally community! The LGBT+ community continues to pursue equal rights for all, with this years ‘International Love’ theme being a perfect example of Liverpool sending a clear message of support to our LGBT+ brothers and sisters who still live in countries that criminalise and persecute LGBT+ communities. At home and following the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK over 50 year ago, more recent changes around gay marriage, parenting and equal rights policy’s all represent positive change. However, whilst our community are still victimised for holding their partners hands in public, LGBT+ young people continue to face torment and bullying at school and homo/transphobic attacks remain an increasing occurrence then our struggle for individual choice, self-expression and sexual freedom must continue.

These aspirations and values are not exclusive and as society shows signs of greater acceptance, a growing numbers of non-LGBT+ people are becoming more vocal and are choosing to stand with us to fight for equality in all its forms. Now known as Straight Ally’s they arguably represent an important part of our evolution and future campaign. Their existence is a direct reflection of our achievements in changing hearts and minds as this would not of happened 50, 30 or even 20 years ago. Not being LGBT+ means Straight Ally’s are sometimes better positioned to challenge prejudice and intolerance amongst their peers, colleagues, families and friends in a way that we can’t always achieve by ourselves.

For full information and times of performances please see liverpoolpride.co.uk

In recognition, Liverpool Pride has dedicated this page to both acknowledge and welcome its Straight Ally supporters and encourages everyone to embrace and adopt the straight ally flag alongside our own. We know that support already existed from non-LGBT communities, especially from families and friends, but this is a structured approach and it represents a ‘real’ shift change in opinion and attitudes. With only 10% of the UK population identifying as LGBT+ this is a great opportunity for us to embrace wider support and showcase to all the true meaning of ‘inclusivity’, which for Liverpool Pride’s is one of our key aims. We therefore invite all our straight ally’s to register at www.liverpoolpride.co.uk, to walk in unity with us on the Pride march and to celebrate with us over the Pride weekend.

Theme: International Love …here’s where YOU come in!

What we want you to do:

Every year our March brings the bustling streets of Liverpool to a standstill. We invite everyone to march with us, no matter how old, where you’re from, your shape, size or passions! This year our theme is International Love. We want you to celebrate Liverpool’s diverse cultures and global links alongside us and we want you to bring friends, family and colleagues along for the ride.

Agree to collect, carry and return one of the Pride in London flags

What do we want to achieve? An international rainbow parade, full of music, celebration, colour and song in support of the progressive work of LGBT+ communities, globally, and the change we still need to see. With enough participants, Liverpool Pride hopes to create a diverse March, which tells the story of International Love. Registrants to the March can agree to carry one of the 72+ flags representing countries in the world where homosexuality is still illegal. In a gesture of national friendship, these flags are on loan from Pride in London. In addition to these, we hope to see marchers in national dress, sporting LGBT+ colours and developing banners, flags, lanterns and sounds of their own. What can you do to support the International Love theme? Register to march and bring friends, family and colleagues along on Saturday 29 July 2017. We can’t stress this enough - EVERYONE is welcome!

Make and bring banners, flags, puppets and lanterns representing what International Love means to you and your group Dress in a national costume. We would like to see as many national dresses – complete with fusions, takes and interpretations – marching together as we can. NB: Please be considerate in your interpretation and treat this creative freedom with respect it deserves; fun and good humour are welcomed, but please use good sense, generosity and discretion when selecting and devising your costume Paint a flag on your face. It could be of the country you are from, a country you would like to visit or one of the ones you most hope will amend their homosexuality laws to support LGBT+ communities. Ensure you know which it is – you will probably be asked! Carry rainbow, trans* & ally flags in solidarity for all that Liverpool Pride and Prides around the world stand together to support! Sing, chant, drum and dance your way round our city. We want to see and hear you! Enjoy it. Take pictures, tell stories and be proud of what you and Liverpool have managed to create. Send and images to us @ LiverpoolPride and make sure you tag us in your Tweets and posts #LiverpoolPride #InternationalLove

A Liverpool Pride World on One Stage Partner Threshold Festival of Music & Arts has its roots in the creative industries of Liverpool and the North West. For 5 successive years, the event has brought together a diverse wealth of artists, musicians, promoters, academics and enthusiasts to The Baltic Triangle district of the city. The festival was previewed in The Guardian in 2014 and has been critically acclaimed in citywide and regional press. The event is a life force for grass-roots and emerging

Using the once derelict and now booming warehouse venues of the Baltic, which has drawn comparisons to Berlin, Shoreditch and the Meatpacking District of New York, the event has grown up with this playground for those seeking the alternative, experimental and fresh. Founded by Kaya Herstad Carney and Chris Herstad Carney as an expression of a passion for the grass-roots music and arts scene of their hometown, the festival has grown in stature every year, attracting more visitors, participants and team members with each edition. Threshold was started by artists for artists, and is dedicated to authenticity and integrity.

A Liverpool Pride World on One Stage Partner Celebrating 25 Years of Africa Oyé Africa Oyé, the UK’s largest free celebration of African music and culture takes place annually in Liverpool. Beginning in 1992 as a series of small gigs in the city centre, the event has gone from strength to strength, moving to its present Sefton Park home in 2002 to cope with demand. With too many negative representations of Africa entrenched in images of war, disease, poverty and famine, Oyé seeks to redress the balance and highlight the fantastic range of cultures, foods, music and artists that make this great continent one of the most vibrant and inspiring in the world. You can catch Africa Oyé at Liverpool Pride as part of our World on One Stage Programme. For more information visit africaoye.com @africaoye 38
