MARCEL CAMUS Black Orpheus is the 1959 film by Marcel Camus, recreating the Orpheus and Eurydice Greek myth set in the favelas of Rio during carnival. Orpheus is ready to sacrifice all to claim his love. A multi-award winner, including the 1959 Palme d’Or at Cannes. The film introduced bossa nova to the world with its soundtrack by Antonio Carlos Jobim. A classic film to (re)discover.

Multi award winner for best fiction feature, one of the highlights of this year’s selection. A miracle happened in Brazil in the 1950’s. Museums opened their doors to artists nobody ever heard of. Critics ranked the painters amongst the best Brazilian artists of the century and that this explosion of art and beauty was a sign that something comparable to the renaissance was happening in Rio de Janeiro. Behind this miracle there was no art academy, patron or dealer, only a psychiatrist, ridiculed by her colleagues, and a painting studio at a mental hospital, in the outskirts of town. The artists were schizophrenic, poor, hospitalized for decades, abandoned by their families and hopeless according to their doctors. This film tells the story of this “Miracle” and the life of this rebellious, frail and engaging psychiatrist: Dra. Nise da Silveira. Brazilica Festival

Home to prosperous families and the servants who work for them, the area is ruled by an aging patriarch and his sons. Favela Gay tells the story of eleven individuals in their own words. Living in eight slums (favelas) in Rio de Janeiro, these members of the LGBTQ community diverse in gender identity and professions have fought prejudice and seen some of the most unsavoury sides of the city. The stigma attached with coming out as LGBTQ anywhere in the world remains difficult, and Rio’s favelas are no exception. Favela Gay is also a story of individuals who find selfempowerment in the face of a society that does not empower them.
