On Saturday 16TH July the stage is programmed with, Brazilian bands, dance shows and DJ’s and you can sample Brazilian food, soft drinks, cocktails and Brazilian beer from 12 midday to 10PM The carnival parade starts 8PM see centre pages for route map Our second film festival features films and documentaries in locations throughout the city and we’ve exhibitions from visiting artists from Bahia and Sao Paulo. It’s been a great year, we won a Brazilian International Press Award at the Embassy in London and were nominated in the large event category at the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards. We need to say a huge thank you to all our funders, sponsors, volunteers and visiting bands for their support.

LIVERPOOL CARNIVAL The charity was set up to produce the first edition of Brazilica for the Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008. The idea for the festival came from Roger Morris, director of Liverpool Samba School (the school’s 21 this year!) After playing with Unidos do Mundo and Beija Flor in the Champions Parade in Rio’s millennium carnival and visiting samba schools huge workshops to see the float construction and the ateliers making costumes, the idea took root. Now Brazilica’s in it’s 9TH edition and growing every year. Brazilica brings millions to the local economy through tourism and local visitors. We work from our base at The Old Library in Lodge Lane Toxteth Liverpool 8 where we deliver percussion and samba dance classes, costume making, float building, community cinema and arts and crafts workshops, with a team of local artists and makers, students and volunteers. Anyone can get involved so call in to see what we do.

BEADIE FINZI “Only When I Dance” follows two teenagers, Irlan and Isabella from rough, working-class Brazilian neighborhoods who aspire to the heights of ballet. Yet, ironically, the aesthetic power of Beadie Finzi’s lensing and the unquestioned support of the kids’ families is such that the impoverished favelas of Rio serve merely as a colourful backdrop to the dancers’ training. The picture’s real tension lies, rather, in the international competitions that can make or break careers.
