Welcome Message

Introduction

IT IS MY ABSOLUTE DELIGHT TO INVITE YOU ALL TO LIVERPOOL PRIDE 2014 – OUR 5TH ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF THE LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER COMMUNITIES. Liverpool Pride began as a community response to the tragic death of Michael Causer in 2009, which is why we choose this first weekend in August to stand up for LGBT equality and host a citywide celebration of LGBT culture where everyone is welcome. Whilst 2014 has seen some great progress in terms of LGBT equality, including the introduction of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 which came into law earlier this year, there have been events in the UK and around the world which have reminded us all that there is still a battle to be fought for LGBT equality.

The campaign march and community zone on the Pier Head will be free to access. Liverpool Pride is a registered charity and therefore any profit made from the event will be reinvested back into the local community.

The most important part of Liverpool Pride is our campaign march which will be as big, bold and glamourous as ever as we walk from St Georges Plateau through the city to the waterfront. The theme for 2014, as voted by you, is Glam Fairy Tales so we’re looking to see all your wings, sparkles and glitter on show! The Pier Head will host the Waterfront Stage and the community area, with Liverpool’s gay quarter, hosting the Stanley St Stage and the Garlands Stage.

Thank you to all our supporters, volunteers and event partners who have worked tirelessly over the 12 months to ensure that this event can happen. Special thanks goes to Barclaycard (who have generously match funded Liverpool Pride during 2014), Storm Consultancy (Event management, coordination & safety), Fierce Management (programming & production), Bill Elms Associates (Marketing & PR), Matt Bury (Design & Artwork), House of Suarez (The official Liverpool Pride Choreographers).

For the 2014 event, Liverpool Pride had to make a tough decision to introduce a ticket charge for the main stage arena and the gay quarter entertainment areas to support the event costs.

On behalf of Liverpool Pride, thank you to all our amazing sponsors: Homes For Everyone, Hugh Baird College, Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Liverpool Community Health Trust, Barefoot Wine, Merseytravel and Liverpool City Council. Without their support, this event would not be possible.

On behalf of the Liverpool Pride team, I would like to welcome you to our 2014 event and hope that you have an absolutely fabulous time!

Lucy Day – Chair of Pride

Message from Police

A Message From The Police

MERSEYSIDE POLICE IS DELIGHTED TO WELCOME EVERYONE TO THIS YEAR’S LIVERPOOL PRIDE. I AM TRACY O’HARA, A DETECTIVE IN THE FORCE’S SPECIALIST HATE CRIME UNIT SIGMA. I AM ALSO THE CHAIR OF OUR POLICE LGB&T STAFF NETWORK.

Pride is an event we are privileged to be involved in from the policing of the day itself through to many of our officers marching alongside you in the parade.

Our message to everyone today is let’s have fun, celebrate the diversity of our City and above all be safe. I have worked for Merseyside Police for almost 18 years. In that time I have seen big changes within the Force so to be here in 2014 an Out and Proud Officer marching in our own Pride parade is simply amazing. Merseyside Police works tirelessly to be an employer of choice for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans* people. This work is done through our Community engagement teams, positive action team our staff support networks, Unison and Police Federations and importantly

our Police Crime Commissioner Community engagement Officers.

Last year we achieved the Navajo Merseyw Cheshire charter-mark. The decision was taken to work on a more local level with Navajo as this enables us to be more Trans* inclusive and to progress our work on Trans* matters with those able to best advise us. We have been part of Manchester Police with Pride contingent for the last decade and to be part of our own parade still brings a lump to my throat. I do not underestimate the image and message it sends out to everyone, to see us in our uniform and Police Tee’s, flying our Rainbow flag. I want to reassure everyone that Merseyside Police will not tolerate any form of discrimination and we represent

you. I am pleased this year, for the first time, our Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Kennedy will be alongside us in the parade which reinforces our commitment to tackling hate crime in all its forms. Jane has recently announced funding for Stop Hate UK, a different way of reporting hate crime for those who would prefer to have a confidential route which is independent from the Police.

If you wish to speak to the Police about hate crime during Pride, I am on duty all day so come along to our stall or contact me on 077 646 21 430. If you wish to report any hate crime please ring 101 and ask for your local Sigma team, always ring 999 in an emergency. Stop Hate UK can also be contacted on 0800 138 1625.

HAVE A GREAT DAY AND HOPEFULLY I WILL SEE AS MANY OF YOU AS POSSIBLE

History of Pride Article

A brief history of Pride

FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK:

IN THE EARLY HOURS OF 28 JUNE 1969, A GROUP OF LGBT CUSTOMERS AT THE STONEWALL INN IN GREENWICH VILLAGE, NEW YORK FINALLY REACTED TO PERSISTENT HARASSMENT BY THE CITY’S POLICE AND FOUGHT BACK. THE OVERRIDING THEME OF THE RIOT THAT ENSUED WAS ‘GAY POWER’ AND SUMMED UP THE DESIRE OF THE LGBT COMMUNITY TO RID THEMSELVES OF OPPRESSION AND CLAIM THEIR RIGHTS. THEIR ACTIONS WOULD ACT AS A CATALYST FOR A GLOBAL MOVEMENT.

Part of the response of LGBT New Yorkers to that riot was a Pride march, organised for 28 June 1970. The LGBT community in Britain also responded by holding a march through Highbury Fields in November 1970. This was followed by the very first Pride march in the UK. On 1 July 1972, 700 people defied heavyhanded policing and homophobic taunts and marched through the streets of London.

was in Liverpool in June 1979 when a collective including The Campaign for Homosexual Equality, Gay Activists Alliance and Friend Merseyside organised a week of theatre, arts and political activism. After the events of 1979 there was a hiatus in Liverpool, although members of the LGBT community continued to march in London every summer and small Pride events were held in the early 1990s.

In the North West, one of the earliest known Prides to ever take place in the UK

In 2008, Liverpool became a European capital of culture, a status which convinced

many that an annual Pride event could work. However, it was the murder of Michael Causer that same year that created the momentum for change. In the days following the attack on the teenager, the LGBT community began to galvanise. Stanley Street would be re-invented as a gay quarter and plans were put in place for an annual Pride march. A motion in support of Liverpool Pride was put before Liverpool City Council on 28 January 2009 and passed with almost no opposition. The fundamental element of the planned event was the date, which was chosen to fall on the anniversary of Michael Causer’s death. In 2010, Liverpool Pride attracted 21,000 visitors and since then, has

continued to welcome record numbers from across Britain and beyond. We may be bigger and better than our earlier events but Michael’s legacy has stood firm. He reminds us to take pride in our difference and celebrate it. Michael’s story also offers up a warning against complacency. We are freer than ever before, but rights are easily reversed; Russia and India are but two examples of countries who have regressed the status of LGBT people. Closer to home, the status and safety of the transgender community is far from secure. So today, for Michael, for LGBT people from Merseyside and for those who live further afield, be proud and be visible!

The Venues (Scene Guide)

LIVERPOOL SCENE GUIDE

By Andy Green, Features Writer at Seen Magazine

LIVERPOOL’S LGBT SCENE BOASTS ITS OWN UNIQUE CHARM, THERE ARE A VARIETY OF VENUES TO CATER FOR ALL TASTES AND THEY’RE ALL CONVENIENTLY LOCATED CLOSE TO EACH OTHER. THE STANLEY STREET QUARTER WITH ITS RAINBOW-ADORNED STREET SIGNS PROMOTES THE AREA AS AN LGBT DESTINATION AND HAS LEAD OTHER CITIES INCLUDING LEEDS AND BIRMINGHAM TO CONSIDER TAKING UP THE INITIATIVE. Liverpool is a city built on diversity, we revel in it, we love to be different and pushing boundaries is part of our nature. The great Liverpool public stand in their thousands to cheer on the Pride march every year and it’s a heart-warming experience – it really does make you feel proud! The city has been very supportive of the LGBT community in recent years, Liverpool is home to the world’s first ever openly gay Lord Mayor who for the past year has been widely regarded as the best we’ve ever had and Homotopia’s April Ashley exhibition at the Museum of Liverpool attracted record numbers of visitors with demand so high that it has extended to run until December. I remember Lord Prescott saying at the launch of April Ashley: Portrait of a Lady that he couldn’t imagine any other city being brave enough to host a major exhibition celebrating the life of a transsexual – and I think he was right. Homotopia has been running in Liverpool for over 10 years now and it’s another great example of how we celebrate and promote our queer culture and no other city has anything quite like it. This is Liverpool’s 5th Pride, the festival has grown enormously since its inception and has firmly established itself as one of the highlights of the LGBT calendar. Happy Pride everyone – have a good one!
