INTRODUCTION IT IS MY ABSOLUTE DELIGHT TO WELCOME YOU ALL TO THE ALL NEW LIVERPOOL PRIDE FESTIVAL 2016 OUR 7TH ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER COMMUNITIES. This year Liverpool Pride Festival will take a more prominent and visual position in the city, taking over St George’s Quarter, including St George’s Hall, The Plateau, William Brown Street and St John’s Gardens. The 2016 event promises to be one of the most visual and flamboyant Pride events ever created. We’ve been awarded funding from the Big Lottery, Arts Council England and the Police Commissioners Fund to work with cultural partners and local communities across the region. These include LOOK International Photography Festival, Writing on the Wall and a massive community choir commission led by Sense of Sound Artistic director Jennifer John. Liverpool Pride began as a community response to the tragic death of Michael Causer in 2009 and exists to remind the community to stand up for LGBT+ equality. Liverpool Pride serves to host a city wide celebration of LGBT+ culture where everyone is welcome. The most important part of Liverpool Pride Festival 2016 is our campaign march which this year will be bigger and bolder than ever, as we have commissioned Liverpool based street theatre company Brouhaha International to animate the march with Liverpool icons in a feast of sound and colour. The march will begin at the Festival Stage on William Brown Street and end at St George’s Hall. The theme for Liverpool Pride Festival 2016
For the 2016 event, the majestic backdrop St George’s Quarter will be transformed into a colourful festival site bursting with activities over the two days. There will be live music and entertainment on 2 fully programmed stages, food and drink zones, community and education zones, a market place, family activities and speakers. This year it’s not just all about the Pride Weekend itself, there are loads of exciting events planned leading up to the Liverpool Pride Festival 2016 celebration. Check the brochure for details! Many thanks to our partners; Radio City 96.7, Homes for Everyone, Barclays, Barefoot Wine, Unison, After Adoption, Stop Hate Crime and Merseyside Fire and Rescue for their generous sponsorship. Thanks also to Arts Council England, Liverpool City Council, Big Lottery Fund – Awards for All, Police and Crime Commission and the Duchy of Lancaster for their grant support. Again on behalf of the Liverpool Pride Festival 2016 team, I would like to welcome you to our 2016 event an invite you to have a fabulous, funfilled and safe time whilst spending the weekend celebrating equality for all within our community. COME OUT OF THE SHADOWS WITH PRIDE IN LIVERPOOL SHINING A LIGHT ON DIVERSITY TO MAKE LIVERPOOL THE UK’S MOST LGBT+ FRIENDLY CITY This year Liverpool Pride is literally shining a light on diversity by committing to making Liverpool the most visibly LGBT+ friendly city in the UK. The first campaign as part of this commitment is Come Out Of The Shadows, which will encourage organisations and public buildings to transform themselves, inside and out using light filtered with the famous Pride rainbow colours during this year’s event in July. This will showcase Liverpool, both inwardly and outwardly, as an inclusive, diverse and tolerant LGBT+ friendly city, while at the same time helping to educate, raise awareness and normalise LGBT+ in all its forms. The overall aim is to make Liverpool a safer place for residents and visitors alike. The campaign is supported by the Police Commissioner’s Fund as a Hate Crime initiative.
4
Last year, St George’s Hall Liverpool generated major media coverage and received more than 250,000 social media views worldwide after the iconic venue was transformed when it was lit with the rainbow colours to show its support for Liverpool Pride. We’re building on this success and encouraging others to follow suit by showing their support. ‘Dress with Pride’ to raise awareness and show support to LGBT staff, customers and the wider community We are also encouraging customer facing organisations to ‘Dress With Pride’ by allowing their employees to dress up either using the 2016 Pride theme of ‘Liverpool Icons’ or using the Pride colours.

WHAT’S YOUR PRIDE STORY? Liverpool Pride are delighted to be working in partnership with widely acclaimed organisation, Writing on the Wall (WoW) to present a 10 week writing course for the LGBT+ community and their allies. The aim of What’s Your Pride Story is to uncover new stories from unheard voices within the LGBT community and to present them to the Merseyside region. In addition, a What’s Your Pride Story book will be created and works will be published to celebrate all forms of creative writing within Liverpool’s LGBT community.
WHAT’S YOUR PRIDE STORY – LAUNCH EVENT Tuesday 26 July Studio 2 Parr Street Proud of Pride? Our writers certainly are! Come to our launch of this unique book of stories by new LGBT writers about their experiences here in Liverpool. Led by writer and publisher Helen Sandler The Touch Typist (Diva, 2001) & Big Deal (Sapphire/Virgin, 1999), fifteen people from the LGBT+ community took part in our 12 week writing course sharing their personal narratives about Pride and what it is like to be part of the LGBT+ community in Liverpool. Writing on the Wall promotes and publishes new writers, using creativity as a tool for self-expression and a vehicle to explore social ideals and relevant, contemporary issues. This project is a partnership between Liverpool Pride and Writing on the Wall and is funded by Arts Council England. All welcome!
throughout the festival. More information at www.lookphotofestival.com. A major photography exhibition has been commissioned as yet another new addition to the Liverpool Pride Festival 2016 programme. Liverpool Pride are delighted to collaborate with LOOK, organisers of the biennial Liverpool International Photography Festival thanks to funding received from the Arts Council England. Together, Liverpool Pride and LOOK invited people to send in photographs in support of this year’s Liverpool Pride Festival 2016 theme - Liverpool Icons. The call encouraged images that represent Liverpool, tolerance and community and which epitomise lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer icons, lives, participation in past Prides and connection to the city. The images received are surprising, moving and hilarious! Some are abstract renderings others, portraits or images that present people & ideas that have broadened perspectives and helped to diversify the cultural scene in the city and beyond. The collected images will form a curated, public work, available for all to see, demonstrating a city that is proud, connected, creative and caring. The public exhibition will be shown on Thomas Steers Way, in Liverpool ONE and will launch on 23rd July and run to 14th August where they will be seen by tens of thousands of people. Wider presentations using additional images will take place

THE BIRTH OF LIVERPOOL PRIDE LIVERPOOL PRIDE WAS SET UP IN 2010 IN RESPONSE TO THE AFTERMATH OF THE MURDER OF YOUNG GAY MAN MICHAEL CAUSER IN 2008. The publication of Liverpool City Council’s Stormbreak report in 2006 had already detailed the difficulties that LGBT people were facing whilst living in Merseyside, with 59% of respondents detailing experiencing homophobic or trans*phobic crimes against themselves. The report also noted that funding of LGBT organisations within the city was very poor at that time. After Michael’s death and a homophobic attack on an off-duty Policeman in the gay quarter in 2009, community activists organised a highly successful vigil on Stanley Street and a wellattended Anti-Homophobia March. At the same time, Liverpool City Council set up the Liverpool LGBT Network who were tasked with conducting research to see what the LGBT communities felt would help better their position. Their first response was that they would like to see the reintroduction of a Pride event within the city, at that time the largest city in the UK not to have one despite there having been earlier events in the 1980’s and 1990’s. The Board of Trustees for Liverpool Pride was set up, under the direction of the first Chair, Tommy McIlravey, the Chief Executive of Sahir House, Merseyside’s HIV support charity. Liverpool City Council supported the festival through its City Safe campaign and other support came from local authorities including Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Mersey Travel, local housing associations and Union branches, as well as public donation and local business support from the Liverpool Gay Business Association members.
10
The Board appointed Orb events to organise the first Liverpool Pride event on 7th August, encompassing a March through the City Centre and entertainment stages on Dale Street/ Stanley Street, North St John Street and Exchange Flags and community events in the surrounding areas. The date was chosen to reflect the anniversary of Michael Causer’s death on 2 August. A smaller-scale day of celebrations followed the day after for Chill Out Sunday, when local arts organisations across the city opened their doors with events especially aimed at LGBT people. The event was free to attend, and although the Board had made a conservative forecast of 7,000 to 10,000 people attending, the eventual official Police figures were that at least 21,000 attended. The day was a huge success and the modern day Liverpool Pride was born.

Dress With Pride urges all businesses and customer facing organisations – such as shops, bars, restaurants, visitor attractions, hotels and offices – to allow their employees to swap their usual uniforms and don colourful and creative costumes throughout the week of Pride.
Participating businesses and venues will be asked to invite customers and visitors to make a donation to help support the work of Liverpool Pride going forward – and to develop their own creative ways to encourage customers to dig deeper. Staff members are encouraged to use Liverpool Icons – the theme of this year’s Liverpool Pride festival – as their inspiration for their chosen outfit. Alternatively, they are invited to wear clothing in the colours of the global LGBT rainbow symbol to also show their support. Participants are also invited to make a small donation to take part.
