Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anybody can start today and make a new ending. Maria Robinson

Work/life balance; it’s about getting the balance right. It’s about making sure that our work or our business is NOT our whole life. I for one certainly did not used to be too good at this. I would work from before sunup till way after sun down and didn’t really have much time for anything else. What I learnt from that, honestly, was what not to do. I didn’t really spend much time with my family and friends, and soon my relationships started to fade. I am a person who needs to schedule everything if it is going to happen. So I now use this scheduling to ensure that I spend time doing things with the people I love. For me this has been a way to bring back the balance. Recently I heard someone say they didn’t think a child should be a scheduled item in a calendar, and I think that is true; however I also think that everything is what we say it is. So we can choose to say that is a bad thing, an unimportant item in our calendar, or we can choose to say it is a good thing, a very, very important thing in our calendar – so important that it gets a scheduled special spot in our calendar. You see, we can make things good, or bad, or indifferent, simply by adding our own words to them. Whatever we say, is, for us. When I started to schedule time with my loved ones and friends, I did this to tell them they were so important to me that I wanted to absolutely ensure I got to spend time with them. For me this is what works to help me keep my balance. I do the same for my exercising; I block out when I am going to do it for the week, and then just do it. Balance is about all the different areas of our life being equal, so we can’t do too much or too little of any. Balance areas for me include, in order: family, health, relationships, spirituality, work, relaxation and holidays, nature, finance. For me, every single one of these things needs to have an overall feeling of fun. If it isn’t fun, I am not going to do it and that includes work and exercise. What is work/life balance to you? Go to our Facebook page. Ways to Work to Live and

! k r o W o t g in iv L p o t S by Steve Goodman Are you living to work, or working to live? It is a question we have all wrestled with at some time, especially as small business owners. It’s one that can be looked at a number of different ways. In some ways it is the same question that fitness pros ask of dieters: “Are you living to eat, or eating to live?” At the heart of both questions is asking yourself if you are doing something because of the necessity of its nature, or because of the pleasure that it brings. Sure, you could survive on wheatgrass and protein powder, but who doesn’t want a milkshake every now and then? With work, as with food, it does not have to be an either-or decision. Many of us do ‘get high’ on the feeling of a job well done, just as we relish the taste of an occasional filet mignon. The idea of working less and living a little more in no way means to take away from the satisfaction or pleasure you get from your work. It’s wonderful if you are one of those so blessed that you find your career fulfilling, but it should not be the 6 ISSUE 55

only thing that defines your life. The key is in striking the right balance. Here are ten essential ways to help even the most die-hard workaholic achieve a better work/life balance, and start working to live, instead of always living to work.

1. The Power of no

One of the surest ways to achieve and maintain a good work/life balance is to learn and embrace the profound power of simply saying “No”. I am not saying to turn down important job or business assignments, but learn to say “No” to the less important things. There are only so many fundraisers, networking events or panels you can attend! Set your priorities, and don’t be afraid to say “No” to things at the bottom of the list.

2. Simplify and downshift If you are working overly hard just to pay the bills, maybe the bills are too high.Maybe you are living beyond your means, trying to support lots of things that you want, rather han you really need. Spending all your

time worrying about earning enough money is physically and emotionally draining. Simplify! Do you need a new car every two years? Don’t be afraid to downsize. I know a powerful executive who just moved from a five-bedroom house occupied by just herself and her husband, to a twobedroom townhouse, and she couldn’t be happier. When you downshift you can spend a lot less time working and much more time enjoying your life.

3. Schedule some me t ime

Whether it’s a mani/pedi, a massage, a yoga class or a workout, schedule some time for yourself. Make it an actual appointment that you must stick to, just as if it were an important meeting or conference call.

4. Flexit ime

If you are not the boss, ask the boss about flexitime or telecommuting. Both are a great way to improve your work/life balance. And if you are the boss, come on – why aren’t you taking advantage of this?

feature

5. Leave work at work

This is a tough one, especially in this ‘work anywhere, anytime’ digital age. But that is also why it is so important. When you are with your family, at the dinner table, or with friends on the beach, don’t be afraid to disconnect for a while.

6. Find your product ivity sweet spot We all have that time of day when we are the most productive and get things done most efficiently. Find your productivity ‘sweet spot’ and schedule your most complex tasks at that time. You will get much more done in a day, and have much more time to do what you enjoy.

7. Plan, plan, and plan If you plan your work week and set specific and attainable goals for each day, you will undoubtedly work less and play more.

8. Good can be good enough

Many of us have come to believe that to achieve the right work/ life balance and to have it all, we have to be super at everything – Super Mum, Super Dad, Super Employee, Super Entrepreneur, etc. But you know what? You can have it all by just being a good mum, a good dad, and a good business person or employee. Plus, no more need to drop your cape off at the drycleaners!

9. Get healthy

You cannot be in balance workwise or life-wise if you do not take care of yourself and your health.

10. Learn t o value t ime Learn the precious value of time over money and consumption. Few have found that by trading time for income, they have truly become rich.

And finally, the best way to achieve a work/life balance is to do something for a living that you truly and honestly love doing. Just because it’s work, doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. If you have never had a day on the job where you smiled and felt deeply and sincerely, “I can’t believe I actually get paid to do this,” then you probably are in the wrong profession.

Work/Life Balance...

Where do I start? by Vickie Magic Being organised is the key to work/ life balance. I recently hired an amazing lady to help organise my house. I have to say that I loved it; it gave me the time back to do the things that I love. Simply b Organised can organise one cupboard or a whole house, or get your filing system working effectively and simply. They can just spend a couple of hours with you to give you ideas, or visit you regularly to keep you on track. Business Matters asked owner Amanda, “What made you start the business?” Amanda said, “I truly love organising. I get a little OCD when things aren’t in their place. I saw so many of my friends being overwhelmed and paralysed by their ‘stuff’. I felt there was a need to help people take control of their homes and to create more joy from family and experiences, rather than accumulation of things. There is no better feeling than being in charge of your things, possessions, your stuff. Our possessions as a whole are not giving us joy but imprisoning us. We

Online vs offline: How to win friends and influence people A strange thing has happened now that going online has become ubiquitous for us all: consumers are surfing the net in search of what’s happening offline. People want to know what’s happening in the ‘real world’. They are sceptical of sales pitches and carefully crafted corporate reputations. They do more research for each and every purchase. They don’t look to brands because the brand won’t highlight its faults – they want the ‘real world’ facts. What does this mean for you as a business owner? Don’t shy away from transparency – grab it by the horns! In marketing circles there is a new buzzword taking the world by storm, online and offline: the term ‘influencers’. In 2013 an influencer is not what we have traditionally believed it to be; it is

a new paradigm. The influencers are not people in your industry who start trends or break new ground as we have traditionally understood. They are people in your industry who spread the trends and report the news. Influencers are real people speaking openly, and consumers respond to the candour of their messages. These people provide consumers with authentic connections as opposed to invisible online mouthpieces. Authentic connections are redefining marketing, and those who understand this new way of doing business will become online influencers and set consumers at ease that they are the real deal. So how do you harness the power of the influencer? Influencers turn a seed of an idea into something everyone is talking about. Business owners need to connect with influencers and turn them into brand advocates. Ultimately it’s about your audience feeling connected to you and wanting to spread your brand story. Here are my hot tips to make influencers stand up and speak for your company: 1. Open for business Be open with your online presence. Post behind-the-scenes shots, product development ideas, even photos of boxes that have just come in containing new season arrivals. These are things your customers wouldn’t normally

see online or offline. This shows the human side of your business. 2. Target practice Make sure you are delivering content, such as photos, blogs and product information, that is appealing to your target market. Give them what they like and they will share. 3. Reach out Contact other influencers in your industry and begin building relationships. You can then share your networks and broaden your reach. Offer guest blog posts to colleagues; get together with others and contact a local media outlet about doing a news story on a trend in your industry; make industry-specific groups on Facebook and make them exclusive for industry discussion. 4. Pareto proof You’ve probably heard of the Pareto Principle that 80 per cent of consequences stem from 20 per cent of causes. When it comes to networking and meeting people, the same ratio can help you nurture existing relationships and create new ones. So get out there and network, online and offline, and reap the rewards.

CRAIG MORRISON

THINKS

BIG Craig Morrison is a young Sunshine Coast local who is living proof that if you think big you can achieve anything. At 25, Craig founded local IT company Business Connexion. After successfully developing his business into a profitable enterprise, Craig partnered with EH Technology owner Greg Searle to form KnowledgeWise 18 months ago. Since its inception, KnowledgeWise has become recognised for delivering innovative and progressive technology solutions. Craig and KnowledgeWise have recently stepped into the spotlight again with KnowledgeWise being acquired by Think Office Technology, a local business specialising in office equipment. Craig will remain at KnowledgeWise as the General Manager and says the joining of the two businesses will be of huge benefit to clients and the local community. The acquisition will see KnowledgeWise expand into the existing Think Office Technology locations including Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Emerald, Gladstone, Gympie and Toowoomba. “This is fantastic news for our region as the growth of KnowledgeWise will stay on the Sunshine Coast,” said

Craig. Scott Toms, one of the Directors of Think Office Technology, said he expected considerable growth and employment opportunities to ensue from the merge. “We currently employ over 100 people across Queensland, with 35 employees based in our local head office,” said Scott. Local businesses will benefit from the perfect combination of office and IT solutions available from Think Office Technology and KnowledgeWise joining forces. The merge allows the business to take a holistic approach to business solutions through their combined innovative office equipment, tailored print services, cloud computing solutions and traditional technology services. “We identified the purchase of KnowledgeWise as a smart business decision, because IT solutions coupled with office solutions truly is the way of the future for business operators of all sizes. Our businesses can be seamlessly integrated to work hand-in-hand and create the best results for our clients. “Cloud computing solutions is a large growth area for businesses large and small and KnowledgeWise specialises in ‘moving your business to the cloud’.

“We accompany all of these services with proactive ongoing support, a skilled and strong team, and streamlined account management. “Through our existing locations, combined with the service offering of KnowledgeWise, we can assist our clients further with innovative ways to do business and by being able to offer the ‘complete’ package,” said Scott. Established in 1993, Think Office Technology is dedicated to finding efficient office equipment solutions for businesses across Australia with the understanding that a speedy and thorough service is paramount. KnowledgeWise is the leading professional IT service provider on the Sunshine Coast and is a Microsoft Certified Partner and Microsoft Small Business Specialist. Life in the balance Achieving a work/life balance has become the phrase du jour as many people struggle to find enough hours in the day to do everything they feel they need to do. Certainly, I was no stranger to that quandary in my earlier life when my kids were younger. I offer my heartfelt sympathy to those trying to hold down careers while ensuring they are also seen as ‘responsible’ parents and somehow also find time to be recreational! Balance is important in everything, really. We live in a society of widely differing views and priorities, and the recent election result has prompted incoming Prime Minister Tony Abbott to emphasise his approach will be calm and steady, not radical and divisive. Here on the Sunshine Coast, I am seeking to ensure we maintain a balance between the need to generate jobs for our workforce and to reduce the ‘brain-drain’ of young people from the region, while ensuring we preserve and maintain our environment and lifestyle. Some might say jobs are more important than ‘green’ issues, but it’s important to remember that our pristine coastal and hinterland environment and the lifestyle it affords are part of our natural advantage over other regions in what is a genuine contest to attract new business investment. ‘The Natural Advantage’ is in fact the branding to our 20-year Economic Development Strategy, which we launched on September 24. I am writing this article during my current visit to China, which in many regions is heavily polluted and full of people who wish they could see the sky now and again. When we host Chinese delegations on the Coast they are amazed and attracted by the things we take for granted. This serves as a good reminder that the balance of our economic activity and environmental care should always be maintained. As a keen visitor to China, I love the vibrancy of its people, its culture and its diversity, but I can tell you I already miss the clear air of the Coast and look forward once again to seeing the sky and the stars.

Give Your Life a

Magic Touch by Vickie Magic

Work/life balance – does it really exist? Well, my interpretation is that everything exists or doesn’t exist if we say so. Whatever we say is, just is.

“If you think you can or you think you can’t you are 100 per cent correct” Henry Ford

So if you say you have work/life balance, then you do. If you say you don’t, then you don’t. On the theme of ‘whatever we say is’, the last 12 months have really seen me take on a different role for myself. My level of happiness is ridiculously high and I know that the first step in making that happen was to say it. Your work/life balance relates to the whole balance of your life and your level of happiness at the end of the day. And your perception of work/life balance is controlled by your level of happiness, don’t you think? Imagine if there were no failures; imagine if there was nothing wrong; imagine if you could click your fingers and all your cares and worries could disappear. Mmmm, some of you might be reading this and thinking, “Yeah right, and imagine if I was magic”. Well I am! My absolute goal, my absolute passion is to make a difference in the lives of people around me, and that includes you. At Business Matters Magazine we don’t print anything negative and the reason for that is that my philosophy, my whole way of being is, ‘Whatever you focus on grows’. So if you focus on what is wrong, then all that can ever happen is that that something that is wrong will get bigger and bigger and bigger, and pretty soon consume your every waking moment. It has to, because what we focus on grows. Whereas, if on the other hand you get a pen and write down a list of 50 things that are amazing, awesome, that you love in your life right now, and then spend the rest of the day (and more) focusing on those things, all that can happen is that what you focus on grows. Pretty soon the great, amazing, wonderful things going on around you, that you forgot about while you were consumed in your Egor “Woe is me, I hate the world” state, begin to disappear. Yes this takes practice, yes this takes time to get better and better and better at, but the fact is that if you are living your life in a negative state, your balance and your happiness level can only get worse. What if you started and ended every single day with some quiet ‘you’ time, where you actually focused on everything amazing, everything you love, everything that is right in your life? What if you stopped yourself from even going to the dark side. I know that things go wrong, but all 14 ISSUE 55

there is to get from the things that go wrong is a lesson. Learn the lesson and then come back over to the light side. It is never ever, ever the situation, it is always always, always our reactions to the situation. Whatever happens, happens. We see it around us every single day; things happen to some people that we might look at and think, “If that happened to me I would be an absolute mess.” Maybe you would, but only if you say so. Keep on learning how to look for the lessons in what is wrong. Find the lesson, learn it and LET IT GO. If you focus on what’s wrong, if you keep looking at it, if you keep BRINGING IT UP, if you have to tell everyone in the world about it, guess what will happen? Yep you got it, what you focus on grows, so it will just get bigger again. Is there something happening right now in your life that you can LET GO? Is there something that you keep on focusing on, keep on allowing to consume you or control you? Make a pact with yourself right now to leave it, look for the lesson, tell yourself what you learnt, then leave it. Now write down that list of the 50 amazing, wonderful things in your life; your friends, your family, where you live, what you do, anything and everything that you love. Then really get into those things, really be grateful for those things, really appreciate those things. Then do it again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, and pretty soon your life will be MAGIC, it just has to be. If you would like me to come and take a mindset magic workshop for your office or a group that you are involved with, contact me at vmagic@bmmag.com.au.

David has enjoyed living on the Sunshine Coast for the past 22 years, so he ‘almost’ qualifies as a local. During this time David has been involved in the sales industry, spending time across a number of industries, including trade, real estate, finance and insurance. David is extremely proud of how Business Matters Magazine is helping to educate, motivate and inspire business here on the Sunshine Coast, and is also enjoying being in a role where he is able to pick up the phone and the people he is calling are genuinely happy to take his call and speak with him.

Chem-Dry SUNCOAST Servicing the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland, Chem-Dry SUNCOAST is independently owned and operated by John Gowland. John says, “People choose Chem-Dry SUNCOAST for their upholstery and carpet cleaning here on the Sunshine Coast because it is a unique, non-toxic carbonated cleaner. It has no dirt-attracting soaps or residues; you use 80% less water than steam cleaning and it dries in one to two hours.” Chem-Dry SUNCOAST services both domestic and commercial buildings. The biggest claim to fame for Chem-Dry would have to be their own green certified product called ‘The Natural’ – for a deep clean that’s so green. You would not add soaps, detergents, phosphates or other harsh chemicals to our air, lakes, streams or forests, so why add them to your carpet? Chem-Dry’s slogan is ‘A better way to clean – a cleaner way to live’. Chem-Dry is drier, cleaner and healthier. Work/life balance Tip “I make sure I leave enough time in the working week to enjoy the coastal lifestyle with family and friends. After all, that’s why we moved here from Sydney six years ago.”

stacey’s beauty My name is Stacey Richardson, I’ve been a beauty therapist on the Coast now for 21 years. My husband built a room in our garage when I had our three children (three under three and a half)! Where I worked on family and friends and word of mouth. Unfortunately, my son Aaron was diagnosed with cancer. I had to live in the Brisbane children’s hospital with him. I reopened my doors 12 months later but my son was still undergoing chemo for three and a half years. I didn’t want to work out of the garage anymore but I didn’t want a shop, I LOVE working from home around my family’s needs. We took out a loan and built extensions to our house. Amazingly at the same time Aaron went into remission! I now have a beautiful purpose built salon attached to my home, where I get to professionally look after my clients at the same time as I get to be there for my family.

Want To Create Wealth through property investment...? If I had been taught these 7 principles of money, strategy and investing at school, I would have been a property millionaire at 25! 1. ADVICE Everyone loves to give it! The most important thing I wish I had been taught is ‘be careful who you take advice from…’ 2. MONEY I wish I had been taught to ask someone who has money how to handle it instead of getting advice from bank employees who are paid to ‘sell you’ the bank’s way. How would any low paid employee know how to create serious wealth? 3. CREDIT CARDS If only they had taught me the power of using a credit card properly. 90 per cent of credit card interest paid in Australia is totally avoidable. 4. FINANCE PLATFORM I wish I had been told that by setting up your finances correctly, you can create an investment portfolio that is completely self funding, allowing for multiple properties with no cost to your personal finances and still pay your home loan off years earlier.

20 ISSUE 55

5. SHARES We all know that shares are volatile, but I wish I had been taught that you need to trade shares. Buying shares and holding them long term rarely works except for the odd gem. 6. COMPOUND GROWTH I wish I had been told the simple rules of compound growth, and how it can work for you (or worst case, for the bank). Compound growth will make you more money than you can ever earn by working. 7. PROPERTY If someone had only told me if I bought an investment property as soon as I could, with the magic of compound growth, I could have bought it again and again and again with no cost to me or my lifestyle.

Experts share knowledge at the upcoming ‘Sunshine Coast Futures Conference’ The Sunshine Coast Futures conference series has become an established part of the Sunshine Coast calendar over the past three years.

An introductory address will be given by the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Cr Graham Quirk, and Sunshine Coast Mayor, Cr Mark Jamieson. Next comes the keynote address by Canadian expert, Professor Mario Polèse,who will share his wealth of knowledge on peri-urban regions. Prof Polèseis is the Senior Adjunct Professor in the School of Urban Planning and Senior Canada Research Chair in Urban and Regional Studies, INRS. The upcoming 2013 conference, to be held on Friday 8 November, focuses on the opportunities and challenges created by our geographic position in the wider South East Queensland region, and how we can deliberately harness the benefits provided by our proximity to the State’s capital. Delegates are expected to leave with a better understanding of how strategic links and relationships work, and how they can develop networks to advantage their businesses, associations and institutions. Attendance at the conference also earns continuing professional development points.

Later, Prof Mike Hefferan, Pro ViceChancellor (Engagement), will present original research followed by a panel discussion that explores ways to strengthen and create connections.

Panel members include former Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Sallyanne Atkinson AO, Michael Kerry, key author of the Regional and Infrastructure Plan and Program for South-East Queensland, David Eades, Deputy Director-General, Housing Services, Department of Housing and Public Works, Queensland and Andrew Craig, former Queensland Trade Commissioner (London and Los Angeles) and previous CEO of the Australian Industry Group and Commerce Queensland. the integrated approach to medical practice management Work-life balance in your medical practice

creating business with Darren Blake Learn Lessons From The Big Brands I talk to clients and prospective clients about branding all the time – every day in fact. I tend to use big, well-known brands as examples, mainly because everyone in the room can relate to them. The frustration we face all too often is that small business owners say, “Branding is different for those guys; they have millions of dollars.” The reality is that the principles of branding are really no different whether you are a mum and dad business or a global conglomerate. Sure, the amount of money you have to spend on your branding differs from the budgets of Coca Cola, IBM and Microsoft, but that doesn’t make your brand any less important. Your brand should help you drive your business. Small or large, a good brand should help you: increase your market recognition and help you stand out from your rivals increase the resale value of your business and help you with your recruitment

attract PR and other opportunities potentially enable you to charge more for your products or services turn your best clients into advocates. It is your brand personality that your customers relate to. Customers don’t emotionally connect with products or with businesses. Customers emotionally connect with people and personality traits. It’s your brand that gives your company a personality, along with your staff who ‘live and breathe’ your brand. Look at the Virgin brand, one of the most multifaceted brands in the global marketplace. What other single brand has been applied to such diverse areas as record companies, radio stations, airlines, mobile phones, retailers, car sales, financial services, festivals and even space travel? While vertical and horizontal diversification is clearly the agenda for Virgin, it is essentially an out-and-out branding operation. Despite the diversity of industries and customers, all the Virgin subbrands revolve around the same values of ‘quality at value price

points, awesome customer service, fun, innovation and a genuine orientation for what people want’. Remember that branding isn’t just for the big boys. Your business or indeed your own personal brand is fundamental to your success and growth. While you may not have the multi-million dollar advertising budget that Richard Branson has, you can still get the basics right. Look at your business card, your website, your point of sale or your advertisements – do they fit with your brand? Visuals, colour palette, logo and style should be kept ‘on brand’ and consistent across all mediums. If your brand is upmarket, does the quality of your stationery back that up to your clients? If your brand is cutting edge, do you have an innovative website to show that you are at the forefront? Take action now. Ideally get a third party professional perspective of your brand and advice on how to get it right. It’s time to start building some real brand equity.

businessmindsherpa

business mindsherpa with Macushla Montell The Tipping Point So many business owners find it challenging in today’s world to get the balance between business, family and personal commitments. As a society we are facing massive cultural change due to economic and social factors. Queensland has the highest divorce rate in Australia, as many families move north for a lifestyle change, only to find they are faced with the financial pressure of providing for their families in an era where we expect so much and the cost of living is so high. Because of the digital era and the expectations we place on ourselves to keep up with the Joneses, we have lost the fundamental ability to connect with each other emotionally and physically. This leaves a massive void of dissatisfaction, as the basic human need for authentic connection is no longer considered a priority. So how do we as a society navigate work/life balance and true personal satisfaction during this new era? 1. Connect with your core values and what is important to you in life. If you were to look back at the story

Lunch and learn sessions aimed at helping you make CHOICES about all things MONEY; including property/earning/investing etc. Lunch group numbers limited to 20 only. First in best dressed. BOOK NOW. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PROPERTY CHOOSE THE RIGHT MORTGAGE CHOOSE THE RIGHT STRUCTURE CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIMING FOR YOU If you don’t know what or how to CHOOSE, these Lunch and Learn SESSIONS are for you. Linda Ireland is a local expert in all things MONEY. Linda started investing at an early age and now has many properties in Australia and overseas. Linda wants to help people at all levels of investing experience; from none to vast, beginners to experienced. Her advice and expertise is well worth listening to.

Q. I’m a first time investor and considering building wealth through property investment. What tips can you give me?

Q. My husband and I are looking at purchasing an investment property. What tips could you give us to use our heads not our hearts when purchasing?

When considering purchasing an investment property, make sure that you are making the most of your money. Read investment and property-related articles and prepare for the peaks and troughs of the property cycle. Think about a long-term strategy to ensure you will make a healthy gain from your investment, and get informed about your finance options, which include having a clear understanding of your financial goals, before you shop for property.

As the landlord, you need to think less about your own property preferences and more about your potential tenants’ wants and needs. Think about the kind of tenants you want to attract to your investment property, and use this to help you hone in on the type of property and property features that would be desirable for these potential tenants.

For first time investors, when building wealth through property there are a number of factors to consider. Talk to people in the know, such as experienced investors, about the locations you are contemplating buying in. Find a professional mortgage broker who can help you compare your loans and guide you through narrowing it down to one suited to your needs and objectives.

Other factors to take into consideration when looking at potential investment properties are safety and security. Just as you do in your own home, your tenants will want to feel safe in theirs.

There are also lots of tax and legal considerations associated with property investment, so it’s a good idea to also seek professional advice from an accountant and solicitor.

Location is a key driver when selecting an investment property, so aim for the best location you can afford. An area offering good transport links and proximity to outlets such as shops, restaurants, parks, schools and even hospitals, would be ideal. Also take into consideration population growth, tenant demand, local price growth, developments planned for the area in the coming years etc.

Does the property have tenant appeal? In order to maximise your rental return, look for properties that will appeal to your ideal tenant. Why not give the house a little more aesthetic appeal with a fresh coat of paint, or put new handles on the kitchen cupboards – every little bit helps! Stick to properties that can be easily and cheaply maintained on the tenant’s behalf, as they are more likely to prefer low maintenance homes that will not require a significant investment of their time for upkeep. Plenty of storage facilities could also help to ensure that the property remains well-kept, and believe it or not, off street or undercover parking could add value to your property and attract a wider range of tenants.

Property Improvements and the balance of life Is your home maintenance prepared for storm season? Are your bathrooms, kitchen and deck ready to entertain friends and relatives this Christmas? Does the current market have you tempted by a renovator special at a discounted rate? We often watch the renovation TV shows and convince ourselves that taking on a home building project looks fun and rewarding. A multitude of industries have evolved to service this growing trend, especially Bunnings with their enormous range and workshops encouraging us all to have a crack. But before you borrow dad’s old nail bag or purchase discounted cordless tools from Aldi, do some research and crunch the numbers. Your time might be better spent on Fraser Island, leaving the work to the professionals.

ProPerty ImProvement & DeveloPment For lIFestyle & Investment • Design & construction • New homes • Property improvements • Development pre-planning

There are many factors to take into account before commencing a major renovation project including, but not limited to, council approvals, engineering, BSA, OH&S, feasibility and finance, etc. Additional personal considerations are the safety of your family, income, marriage and sanity while living on a construction site for an extended period. Often you will benefit from a consultation with a quality builder to discuss your strategy and best course of action to ensure you do not end up divorced and selling a renovator special at a discounted rate.

• Project management & JV deals

Record low interest rates, recovering property prices and increasing demand across the Sunshine Coast means investing now is important for your future financial security. Serious investors with an eye for small scale property development are snapping up bargains and submitting planning applications to maximise the value of land with potential to subdivide, split or otherwise accommodate a higher density population. Opportunity abounds for those who are prepared and a major part of the prep will be to gather a team of trusted professionals to partner with, who have the skills and experience to complement your own, because with proper research the rewards are satisfying in more ways than one.

online marketing matters megyn carpenter | rejuvenate marketing

The Best Things Online are Free! With so many pressures on family budgets, using free online tools for your business makes sense. Online tools including social media, websites, email, apps, search engines, videos, podcasts and information resource sites can all be used or consumed for FREE!

In BusIness, MarketIng Counts

Well… kind of. Free online tools still cost you time, broadband and to some extent, your privacy. As a business owner, your most precious assets are your time, your health and your knowledge. A business owner that has little time, poor health and doesn’t keep up to date and make connections in their industry either burns out or their business fails. Achieving success with your business means balancing what you do with your time and looking after yourself. You are the greatest asset to your business, so it makes sense to take care of yourself and your health to ensure you are in the best shape to continue to grow your business. Be ferociously protective of your time and avoid time thieves. Being selective and saying no to certain requests for your time is essential. Task management is more important than ever. Here’s a proven way to manage tasks:

I know my marketing is being taken care of with Rejuvenate and the coaching has shown me how important it is. They’ve taken my business to the next level. Love their work! Lyn Sidney, Design Principal, Lyn Sidney Design

Firstly, check your diary or calendar for appointments and determine how much work time you have available for tasks. Using a spreadsheet, enter the time available and make a note of anything that needs to come from others. List your tasks, estimating how many minutes for each task. Next, allocate an A or B to each task. A’s must be done today, B’s can be done if you complete all the A’s. If tasks come up during the day, these can be added as C’s. Total the minutes column. Micro-managing tasks is a sure way for task management to go out the window. Keep your task descriptions as broad as they can be, eg. ‘Pay bills’. Your other systems will tell you which bills need to be paid and when. Make sure you block out ‘Me Time’ for doing what you love, exercising and relaxing. This is so important for your health and being on top of your game. One idea for keeping moving during the day is to have ‘dance breaks’. Get up from your desk and dance to your favourite music for a couple of minutes at regular times during the day. Okay, that might be tricky in an office, shop or site full of people, but for all you homebased business owners working alone, go for it, because you can!

Need help managing your website or social media marketing? Want more enquires? Call me today.

And now, here’s the key to planning your tasks... calculate 60 per cent of your total time available and adjust your tasks and priorities so they fit into this time. If you plan for 60 per cent of your time available, any time blow-outs are allowed for and you may be able to achieve more than what you planned to do. This takes the pressure off and you’ll get a sense of achievement from ticking off that list.

Finding the elusive work/life balance We spend an incredible amount of energy discussing, debating, and chasing this ideal but often elusive concept of work/life balance. In circles of professional women, it’s hard to be in a room without this issue being raised. In recent years, working professionals have placed an increased emphasis on establishing a work/life balance, looking for ways to effectively juggle career, family, health and personal responsibilities in order to reduce stress and increase productivity and job satisfaction. Of course the perfect equilibrium of work and personal time is a noble goal to strive for, but the reality is that few can achieve and sustain it. Along with the surge in online communications and technology, we’ve made ourselves constantly available, checking and responding to emails, voice mail, and the Internet via our smartphones. This keeps us connected to our work 24 hours a day, blurring the fine line between work and life. While balance becomes even harder to attain while we’re always reachable, we need to be thinking about how we can effectively integrate technology in an effort to be more productive with our time so that we enjoy more time doing the things outside of work that we love. In essence this means working smarter not harder. But this has brought me to think, is work/life balance the goal, or is it about enjoying the various aspects of your life? Can we have it all? What does work/life balance look like; is it something that’s so individual that we can’t put a label on it? Although plenty is still being written and debated about the perfect work/life balance, the conversation is beginning to shift toward concepts such as energy management and flexibility. Happiness is still the ultimate goal, but happiness and work/life balance aren’t the same thing. You can have perfect work/life balance and a deadend job that leaves you exhausted. Those who are able to lead inspired, engaging lives in various spheres – from work, to family, to personal wellbeing – have something greater than balance. They have fulfillment. Seeking perfect balance between your personal and professional life may actually be senseless. Instead we might be better off considering whether we are fulfilled, both personally and professionally, by asking ourselves the following questions: 1. Do I have energy for things that are important to me? 2. What gives me energy and engages me? How often am I doing those things? 3. If I could have more hours in a day, what would I do with this time? 4. If I could craft a perfect day, what would those 24 hours look like? 5. Do I have mental space to think? How able am I to take a step back periodically and assess what’s working and what’s not? 6. What are the three to five things I need in my life to be happy and healthy? What can I do to ensure these? You may find that your ‘out-of-balance’ life is actually very rewarding. Or that you need to create some control over your time to be calmer or boost energy levels.

commercial property matters nick wilson | colliers international

Why pay another person’s mortgage? From 2008 to 2012, the Sunshine Coast commercial property market was characterised by fluctuating leasing and sale rates caused by increased vacancy throughout all sectors, low consumer confidence and of course the GFC. This resulted in the retail market being hit the hardest, followed closely by the office market. While retail strips such as Mooloolaba Esplanade and Hastings Street in Noosa have survived well, secondary retail locations have had it tougher. This has been reflected by most retail enquiry in recent times being focused on high foot traffic areas.

Suite 9 / 31 – 33 Plaza Parade, Maroochydore • 450m2 – Vacant possession office • OWNER WANTS TO SELL • Pricing – Phone agent

The good news is that since the beginning of 2013, leasing and sale transactions have been solidly on the rise throughout all areas. There has been a noticeable increase in owner occupier and investment sales, almost to the point where most potential tenants are now potential buyers. This increase in transactions is due to many factors, including recovery from the GFC, vacancy absorption from the flooding of vacant office space onto the market as a result of the construction of the Maroochydore government building, decreased interest rates and increased consumer confidence. Now that the election is over and Australians know which direction we are heading, positive attitudes towards the commercial property market will help it move in the right direction. Most business owners are now considering owning their business premises, with the frame of mind, “Why pay another person’s mortgage?” This has been a common theme in recent months. As the price of commercial property has decreased over the past few years, the mixture of positive factors and competitive market pricing makes purchasing all the more attractive.

FREE Energy Bill Analysis

How much are you paying for your electricity? Are you comparing apples with apples? How much should you be paying? Many electricity retailers represent their charges on invoices differently and this does lead to confusion. The 2013-2014 government gazetted tariff states the maximum a business can be charged. This document can be found at www.qca.org.au/files/ER-Gazette-NEP201314-0613.pdf. 2013-2014 Residential Gazetted Tariffs QLD Residential all consumption 26.73c per kWh + 50.219c per day

Energy Resources Corporation (ERC) has reduced the electricity costs in over 150 residential and commercial buildings over the past 11 years  No brokering fees or commissions  Independent Sunshine Coast Business  Over 70 years combined electricity industry experience

QLD Small Business general supply 23.218c per kWh + 130.161c per day Recently we were presented with a customer’s invoice where, due to the multitude of line items on the invoice, they were unsure exactly how much they were paying for their electricity. All invoices can be directly compared against the government gazetted tariff. Note the days on the invoice and multiply that by the daily tariff noted as 130.161 cents ($1.30) for QLD business customers. Deduct this amount from your total invoice (excluding gst) and then divide this dollar amount by the kWh charged on your invoice. This will give you a cost per kWh to compare with the allowable tariff. Whether it be Origin, AGL, Energy Australia, Q Energy or an alternate retailer, all invoices are different, but they are all comparable to the gazetted tariff. Retailers may offer discounts but beware of the small print. Some retailers offer a discount off the energy component only, which may be only 40 per cent of your invoice total. Other retailers may offer discounts off the total invoice but only for year one of a two year contract. Know how much you are paying, then shop around for the lowest price possible. Make sure you are comparing the total spend of each contract and not just the per cent discount on offer.

Whether it be Origin, AGL, Energy Australia, Q Energy or an alternate retailer, all invoices are different, but they are all comparable to the gazetted tariff. about the author Matthew is a qualified electrician who complemented his apprenticeship with QLD Rail by studying Business at University of Southern QLD. Understanding what is driving our market We are now coming into the traditional spring and summer peak of our Sunshine Coast property market. The first week of spring has been absolutely phenomenal with the level of enquiry and sales. This is due to a number of factors but the driving force for what we are seeing is all we have to offer here on the Coast. A survey was conducted on 10,000 Australians between the ages of 50 and 60. They were all asked what they looked for when they retire, and not surprisingly the top of the list was climate and medical facilities. The Sunshine Coast tips the scales in both those areas, and more and more people are starting to notice and wanting our lifestyle.

In July this year Realestate.com received over 116,000 search results for the Sunshine Coast greater region, proving again that the southern buyers are keeping a close eye on our market and waiting to make the move. RP Data Chief Research Director released that the southern property market has been in a solid incline with an averaging 6.5% increase since May last year. This is a positive not only for the Australian market but also for our Sunshine Coast market. With a spike in tourism over the past few months, it’s becoming clearer that the gap between Sydney and Melbourne markets is driving the southerners north and they are choosing the Sunshine Coast to call home. In July this year Realestate.com received over 116,000 search results for the Sunshine Coast greater region, proving again that the southern buyers are keeping a close eye on our market and waiting to make the move. As we get closer to the end of this year we are going to see more and more evidence of the southern influence, with days on market getting fewer and more and more property selling each week. The supply and demand factor will be the key to capitalising on this market trend.

did you know?

Pleeeeease!

Recent weather events on the Sunshine Coast have highlighted to several buyers of residential properties the risks of buying a home without having their own insurance in place prior to settlement. Many are not aware that the standard residential contracts in use throughout Queensland state that the property is at the buyer’s risk from 5pm on the business day after signing the contract. This means the buyer should take out insurance on the property, to protect them against the risk of it being damaged during the period between contract and settlement. The reason for this is that there is no automatic right to pull out of a contract just because the property is damaged. In most cases, the buyer must still settle and pay the full price for the property. There is a statutory exception to this (and neither party can contract out of it) – if the property is so badly damaged that it is unfit for human habitation, then the buyer can cancel the contract. It is unlikely that mere water inundation would be enough to enable a buyer to cancel and get their deposit back. There is also some argument as to how this statutory protection operates – is a buyer able to cancel a contract as soon as the property becomes uninhabitable, or does the right arise only if the property is uninhabitable on the settlement date? Many buyers choose to hold off on getting their own insurance in place until the contract is ‘unconditional’; for example, after the finance and the building and pest inspection conditions have been satisfied. The problem with this situation is that there may be damage to the property that the buyer is unaware of until they carry out their pre-settlement inspection. If the damage was caused before the contract became unconditional (and therefore before the buyer had insurance in place), the buyer may still have to settle the contract and personally bear the cost of repairing the damage caused.

Are you looking for a lawyer that speaks a language you understand? Contact Lever Law Solicitors for a clear, prompt and affordable answer to your legal questions.

From the seller’s perspective, it is essential that they also retain their insurance until the settlement date. There are often other rights that might give rise to the buyer being able to lawfully cancel the contract, meaning the seller would be left with cost of repair.

Many are not aware that the standard residential contracts in use throughout Queensland state that the property is at the buyer’s risk from 5pm on the business day after signing the contract. about the author Sophie has 25 years experience in property law – firstly as a Conveyancing Secretary, and for the past nine years as a Solicitor. super matters paul fox | the super factory

How to Save $60,000 Beneficiary Tax At present, your super fund is required to keep a track of non-concessional contributions and concessional contributions. Non-concessionals are referred to as the tax-free component and concessionals are referred to as the taxable component. If your super fund is in accumulation phase, all its earnings go towards increasing the taxable component. Note that this is quite separate from the tax paid on earnings. If the fund is in pension phase, then earnings are allocated to each component based on their proportional balances at the start of the pension. One of the disadvantages of Australia’s superannuation vehicle is that the taxable component of your member balance is taxed at 15%, plus the Medicare levy, when paid to a non-dependant beneficiary on your death. The ‘Recontribution Strategy’ though can decrease the taxable component and increase the tax-free component of your member balance. The strategy usually requires you to be over 60 years of age and will differ depending on whether you are retired or still working. Consider Mary, who is still working and will turn 65 years of age in this financial year. Her member balance is $400,000 and has a 100% taxable component. If Mary was to pass away today and her superannuation money went to a non-dependant, a minimum of $60,000 would need to be paid in tax. If, however, she was able to implement a withdrawal and recontribution strategy, she could change that taxable component to a tax-free component and divert $60,000 from the ATO to a non-dependant beneficiary. This is difficult to do if you belong to a retail or industry fund, but is simple if you have a self-managed fund (SMSF). While the incumbent government will probably continue to make legislative changes to superannuation, the structure of this sector in Australia has been and is continuing to go through a fundamental shift. Rather than leave investment decisions to professional fund managers, average Australians are taking control of implementing their long-term investment preferences via SMSFs. ATO research shows one million Australians already have an SMSF, with another 1.4 million planning to start one within the next three years. The SMSF is no longer a mystery. It is here to stay. Just be sure to partner with a good adviser, administrator and auditor.

Five Ways to Save with Document Management Converting your documents from paper to electronic versions by utilising a Document Management system will lead to an abundance of savings by your business. Here are five key areas in which your company will experience savings with the help of a Document Management system: 1. Time – By working with digital rather than paper documents, time once wasted manually filing and retrieving documents, or searching for lost or missing documents, can be spent more productively servicing your customers or growing your business. 2. Money – The cost of physical storage for paper documents adds up. Expenses include filing cabinets, off-site storage, and perhaps the biggest expense, the manpower to manually file and retrieve paper documents. Savings through Document Management systems come from reducing the amount of postage and paper your business uses, not to mention the costs associated with lost or missing documents. 3. Space – Electronic documents take up a fraction of the space that paper versions do. Off-site storage becomes unnecessary and the space once taken up by filing cabinets can be put to better use. 4. Legal woes – Document Management provides access control, protecting sensitive or classified information by limiting who can access it. Audit trails track whoever views and edits your documents. These measures help businesses ensure regulatory compliance. 5. Your business – Yes, most important of all, a Document Management system can help save your business from going out of business. Paper files and records can be irretrievably lost due to fire, flood, or natural disaster. Thanks to disaster recovery, your company can literally rise from the ashes and get back to business.

By working with digital rather than paper documents, time once wasted manually filing and retrieving documents, or searching for lost or missing documents, can be spent more productively servicing your customers or growing your business.

WORK TO LIVE Work/life balance has been quoted many times in the last decade as the desirable status that every working person seeks. There have been many initiatives and policies introduced by HR departments in large organisations on how they will provide a work/life balance for their workers. The question is, has this balance been achieved, or is it even attainable? Is it only about the employer providing the framework for a work/ life balance or is it an inherent part of each individual, or circumstantial as to whether they work to live or live to work? While organisations can support or encourage a work/life balance by providing flexible working hours, creative leave options and the opportunity to work from home, each individual has to decide if they want to work to live or live to work, and then define what the balance looks like for them. In doing this, the younger generations can provide a good role model in their understanding of what balance looks like for them and seamlessly achieving it. Older generations struggle with over-commitment and guilt, which is often self-imposed. It is about having balance across all aspects of your life, and defining what you need to be fulfilled in all areas of your life, which will ultimately result in engagement at work and with family and friends. For one person it might be that they want to be able to go to the gym three mornings a week before work. For another person, it is picking the kids up from school and taking them to soccer on Wednesdays. Another person may have an ailing mother who they like to visit at lunch time twice a week. It is about feeling as though work doesn’t define you, and that you are able to gain fulfilment from other areas of your life. Continue your search for your work/life balance and the ultimate ‘work to live’ ethos. Most importantly, celebrate when you achieve it, because soon enough life will surely throw you a curve ball and disrupt your balance, and you will once again be redefining your work/life balance. But don’t give up – life is definitely too short.

Business – A Life Changing Investment! Recent years have proven that there are now very few guarantees when it comes to a secure investment and the safe havens we had enjoyed for so long. Gone are days of large capital gains in the residential and commercial markets and most shares, super funds and term deposit investments offer very little return, if any. A typical investment home valued at $400,000 will only return rent of around 5% (or $22,000) per annum, while a commercial premises of the same value may bring in up to 10% ($40,000); that is, if you can retain a tenant. Businesses, however, have never offered such value as they do now. For the same dollar outlay you can buy an established business and expect around 45% (or $180,000) return on your investment.

Technology and the Work/Life Balance The old adage that you work to live, not live to work, epitomises the balancing act between having a rewarding career and a fulfilling lifestyle. As individuals, our ideals for a work/life balance will differ, but having more time to do the things we love is something we all desire. So how does technology fit into this equation? Over the last few decades, technology has completely changed the way we do business. The invention of the internet, mobile computers, smartphones and cloud technology have provided workers with 24/7 access to their workplace from virtually anywhere. As a result, employees now have greater flexibility in both hours of work and work location.

Ladies Unsure about insurance?

Her Life was created by women, for women! After many years of dealing with insurance advisers in Sydney and Melbourne, finding a gem like Her Life has been a blessing in so many ways. Her Life immediately impressed us with their no fuss, confident and tenacious approach to finding the right insurance policies for us and following up on relevant details when needed. Her Life are passionate about helping women by going above and beyond. It’s hard to see that partnering with any other organisation would achieve the same results.

A new product has entered the insurance market recently, Children’s Insurance. Being a mother myself I can certainly see the value in this; after all, our children are our most treasured people in life and we aim to protect them at any cost. Child cover, depending on which provider you select, is attached to an adult policy and pays a lump sum up to $200,000, in the case of death, serious illness or trauma. This gives you the freedom to take time off work to care for the child, access quality medical treatment, fund rehabilitation or stay in temporary accommodation while your child is receiving treatment. It ensures that in a time of crisis for your family, you can give your child the best possible chance to recover and also not suffer financial burden in your normal day-to day life. Even though your world will feel like it has stopped, the bills will keep on coming. Different companies offer different versions of child cover, so it is important to research or discuss with your advisor what suits your family’s situation most appropriately. Because this is a relatively new concept, insurance companies are offering excellent incentives to take out child cover, such as a periods of premiumfree cover, discounts, and greater payout amounts. We all insure our homes, cars, travel and even our pets. I think that for parents it would only seem logical to insure our kids too.

What is periodontal disease? Have you noticed bleeding while brushing or flossing? Had a tooth feel a little loose? Or experienced a swollen gum? These can be symptoms of periodontal disease. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that at least half of all adults suffer from gum disease, ranging from mild or moderate to severe. But what is periodontal disease?

It’s time to smile!

Periodontal disease or gum disease is a bacterial infection that targets the tissue and bone supporting your teeth. Bacteria, from either the food we eat or occurring naturally in the mouth, adhere to the surfaces of the teeth. This bacterium then releases toxins which cause inflammation. Left unattended, this process can lead to periodontal disease. Emerging evidence now shows a relationship between periodontal disease, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases. The presence of periodontal disease may be associated with heart attack, diabetes, kidney disease, preterm low birth weight babies, and stroke. So maintaining a healthy mouth can indeed impact on your general health!

Emerging evidence now shows a relationship between periodontal disease, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases. It is reassuring to know that, depending on your individual risk factors, medical history, and brushing habits, periodontal disease can indeed be treated. After initial diagnosis, regular check-ups, cleaning procedures and ongoing maintenance can result in healthy teeth and gums. So if you happen to notice some or all of these symptoms, consult a dentist. It could be your first step towards a long and healthy life.

What does ‘work/life balance’ mean? That sometimes things don’t need to change? A look at this chart will show you that over the past 35 years, women have lifted engagement in paid work to almost the same level as men. There are now more women than men studying at university and gradually taking more dominant roles in business and professional life. Most people think this change is a step forward for equality and social justice, even if for some it came with a heavy price.

Given the inescapable realities of biology, and the physical and psychological demands of motherhood, women are increasingly faced with the dilemma of reconciling a natural desire to use their higher education and ambition to succeed, against lingering societal values and judgements as well as employment stereotypes. The real world of ‘work’. Recent figures suggest half of all families with kids have both parents working, often at different times. Working extra hours is common when both parents work fulltime, as is working both weekdays and weekends. And this extra work is often to get everything done and meet deadlines

numberbusiness rather than to increase incomes. Shift work, FIFO jobs, and weekend work are a regular condition of work in occupations such as mining, nursing, and retail. To some extent, new communications technologies have allowed working from home to help balance work and caring responsibilities. When families have young children at home and both parents working, the need to balance work and family activities results in time pressure and stress. For some, there are also negative consequences for mental and physical health. In extreme cases this stress can affect relationships with others. Social pressures see mothers feeling rushed or pressed for time more often than fathers, regardless of either partner’s employment status. Paula loves creating hairstyles for any special event including many corporate events, award nights, parties, formals and of course weddings. Paula works independently and creatively and travels throughout the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. “For many women, the most important days of her life are her wedding day and the day she gives birth. I get to be involved in one of these special days!” says Paula. Throughout the entire process Paula connects and communicates effectively with the bride, making sure the big day is relaxing, fun and above all, creating an amazing hairstyle that will look incredible! You will feel glamorous and stunning, yet comfortable being yourself. “My point of difference is that I like to have a laugh and have fun, which always makes the day memorable. I absolutely love being there on the day when it all comes together,” says Paula. It’s been a busy year so far for Paula, and in May she attended the Bali Sales Congress with Target Training. “Bali was amazing; not only did I learn lots of great techniques and skills to implement in my business, I also made lots of new friends and connected with other business owners. socialbusiness Scott Toms, Think Office Technology: Commit to your current project or task before moving onto the next. When you come home and put the key in the door, leave your work issues at work. You are home.

Business Boardroom Ross Forbes from Forbes Chatham Insurance and Tradesure was the speaker for our recent Boardroom Business lunch. Ross shared with us that he is still striving towards work/life balance, but feels he is starting to get it right. What Ross does is to take one hour a day to do what he really wants. He also takes one afternoon a week to do a leisure activity he really enjoys. Ross told the group that he has been in partnership with Brian Chatham for almost thirty years. He believes that the longevity of the business is because he and Brian are always thinking about what they can do within the industry to be different and unique. This was where the idea for Tradesure came from. Ross and Brian believed that there was a real need for insurance specifically for tradies.

They were right, and Tradesure is now a national company with its head office here on the Sunshine Coast. We asked the rest of the group to give us their number one work/life balance or time management tip: Cath Molloy, Target Training: For me, work/life balance is all about integration. No stress, just be fully present in what you are doing and have fun doing it. Chris Turner, SunnyKids: Whether it’s work/life balance or time management, understand what is urgent as opposed to what is important. Find a way of assessing this to ensure you give time to the important things at work and at home. Craig Morrison, KnowledgeWise: I try to remember that I work to live and don’t live to work. Life’s too short!

Kim Morrison, Twenty8 and Like Chocolate For Women: It’s not so much work/life balance but more a work/life blend. Whatever multitude of roles you play, be in it 100 per cent, smile and accept that everything is subject to change. Loretta Morgan, Jam Property: Always make time to do what you love - it’s when you get your most creative ideas and inspiration. Tatiana Porter, Haycroft Workplace Solutions: Prioritise and then diarise. Make sure you make time for all the important things. Felicity White, The White Plan: Allow wriggle room between appointments, meetings and work tasks. I am a big believer in building in allowances for Murphy’s Law.

with Dranko Magic Just imagine you are walking through the forest, it’s a beautiful spring morning. The bird are chirping, the air is cool and fresh. your feet are all wet from the moist grass and it’s quite bright as you move towards the end of the forest. The sun shining down through the tree’s, the breeze is getting a little stronger. You are at the end of the track and there it is, in the opening. Work/life balance. “What’s that” you say, “Work/life balance. Is it really true, could there be such a thing.” We all talk about it but do you really think that it could exist?

I say, “yes it does, it all depends on you.” We all have to try and make the time to have the right balance in our lives. Most of us think it all about spending more time doing the thing we love. To a degree this is true, but it’s not all about doing or finding the time to do those things. Work life balance for me is also about the people that mean the most to you in life and letting them know. When was the last time you really spent some quality time with the one you love? It’s no use working our butts off if we can’t share this with the one we love. Recently while doing my delivers I got a call that my Vickie had been taken to hospital with breathing difficulties. At this point everything stopped for me, nothing else mattered. The thought of something happening to Vickie just broke my heart in a split second. At the end she was ok, we did spend six hours at the hospital and can I just say a big thank you to the staff at our Nambour hospital. To me you are all heroes in my books. So why do we have too wait until something happens before we realize the

true meaning of work/life balance. Yes we all want to spend time doing the thing we love, and spend time with the ones we love. So why do we often put this aside and focus just on our work. Let’s all try to find the balance. Some of us do it, some try and some just don’t find the time at all. It’s very easy to slip into work work work and forget about the true balance in your life, the ones closest to you. We do have a pretty good balance Vic and I but at the end of the day we to may forget about the balance at times. So make a effort everyone and find the time to do the thing you love with the ones you love. Because if you stop work right now for the rest of the day, it’s still going to be there tomorrow. Until next time, stay happy, don’t sweat the small stuff, and keep smiling. Don’t worry be happy. Dranko Magic is the other half of Business Matters Magazine. Who is The White Plan? The White Plan is a strategic advice provider to businesses going through rapid growth and/or requiring an exit strategy. The White Plan sources and project manages the right team of business professionals to achieve the client’s business goals. What does The White Plan do? By ‘unpacking’ a business through The White Plan process we can identify what is really going on in the business’s current ‘state of play’. Once a business can identify what is actually happening it can then plan properly. The White Plan 90 Day Action Plan is developed for the business, and the correct team of business professionals appointed to deliver the outcomes the business owners want to achieve. An ongoing Strategic Business Development Plan is implemented once the initial ‘to do’ task list in the 90 Day Action Plan is completed by the recommended team of business professionals. The White Plan’s point of difference is that we personally implement and manage our report recommendations and source the right professionals who best match our client’s needs. It can sound like a lot of theory, however the difference in what we do at The White Plan is to apply a bit of ‘uncommon common sense’ to a business whilst making sure what we are hoping to achieve genuinely fulfils the business owner’s personal and professional aspirations. From time to time it can involve a bit of tough talking but sometimes we all need that as part of the journey to get to where we want to go. The White Plan looks forward to sharing in Business Matters the progress of Sunshine Coast businesses we are working with. We are proud to introduce Gerry and Donna Morris of Hot Business Events, who have made some gutsy business decisions in the past six months and are a pleasure to work with.

Aim: To transition from a speakers bureau franchisee to their own events company. The White Plan 90 Day Action Plan: Structure and Strategy The White Plan team of professionals: Specialist Franchise Law Legal Practitioner Business Insurance Specialist Personal Risk Insurance Specialist Business Banking Specialist Online and Digital Marketing Specialists Branding and Communication Marketing Specialists Liaison with client’s existing Accountant and Bookkeeper Outcomes achieved: Successful sale of the client’s existing franchise business. Implementation of new business structure that provides the client with comprehensive personal and business asset protection and the correct platform for future business growth. Brand development and 12-month marketing strategy for the new events company. Implementation of complete ‘back end’ event management systems and processes supported by their new online website, ticketing and payment platform. These systems integrated with the business’s new business banking solutions and existing bookkeeper’s processes. Next goal: Scalable and Saleable The ultimate goal for Gerry and Donna is for Hot Business Events to become a business model that can be expanded to allow them to regularly travel overseas. Could a personal assistant be one answer to work/life balance?

Don’t wait until you’re at breaking point to recognise the need for a personal assistant to leverage your time. Are you spending too much time working on ‘stuff’ that could be delegated? Are you losing focus on your core skills? Finding there is simply just not enough faceto-face time with your clients? How do you work on your business when you are working in your business all day? There is a common myth that nobody can do the job as good as you. Sure. Or maybe. Think about how you started in your business, being the jack of all trades, the master of some, and gradually building that business to the level you have achieved today. Now consider the tasks that no longer really need your personal input. Be honest with yourself! Write down a list with two columns - the tasks that you must do yourself, and the tasks you really could delegate. When you recognise that there are a number of tasks you are doing that really could be delegated, then you

are close to acknowledging that a personal assistant is possibly the answer. Any task that is revenue driven generally needs some of your input but consider your marketing, bookkeeping, database, filing, reports, CRM, and you are getting a clearer picture what your personal assistant could do for you. Formulate a procedure manual of ‘how to’ tasks for that personal assistant, a list of ‘must have’ skills, experience and knowledge. Consider also, that with a bit of training, that perfect person should be able to handle those tasks. Having a healthy attitude and understanding towards your goals would rate higher than the right skills for your personal assistant, as skills can be taught however attitude cannot. When you engage with a personal assistant, let them work and you can either relax or utilise your time more effectively but be aware, you should lead by example. When you manage your time efficiently as the leader of the team, your team will follow. Your personal assistant needs to fully understand your goals (and perhaps the dreams that come with them) and know your vision for your business. Without this understanding, how can your assistant truly assist you?

businessknowhow

Delegation is vitally important so ensure you maximise the benefits. It doesn’t mean you need to prepare more, delegate the tasks that don’t require your input, set up your diary so you both know and understand each other’s schedule and communicate regularly via a CRM program. Sure, your PA may make mistakes and decisions that may not always be your choice, but if it is made with the best intention, then through communication, you can always amend, rectify or accept. Why would you invest in a personal assistant then? When you want to leverage your time and acknowledge that to have a personal assistant keeping the fires burning or the engine running within your business will lead to more efficiency, then it is time to make the decision. Generally, the diary management, the administration, the accounts and marketing don’t usually require the business owner to be chained to the office. Imagine the possibilities if you had more freedom to have better clarity and focus on your business, more face-to-face time with clients or perhaps the option to spend more time with your family! That is the benefit of a personal assistant. Mobile 0439 756746 info@halfdaypa.com.au

IRT Queensland

Keeping in touch with the community In August Currimundi residents from IRT Parklands were delighted to spend a day with high school students from Meridan State College as part of QLD Seniors Week celebrations. The hospitality students spent the day preparing and serving up a high tea that was attended by Member for Kawana, QLD Attorney General and Minister for Justice Jarrod Bleijie.

IRT Group is one of Australia’s largest community based seniors lifestyle and care providers. We have been providing seniors lifestyle and care solutions for over 40 years. The multi-award winning IRT Group manages communities in more than 30 locations across NSW, ACT and QLD, providing care solutions to over 9000 customers.

Life doesn’t stop at retirement At IRT we understand that work is an important part of our lives but it isn’t all there is to life.

The success of the event has prompted residents at IRT Parklands to begin preparations for more events with local school and community groups in the future.

After we stop working full time, many of us continue some kind of work to keep ourselves busy.

At Buderim, IRT The Ridge residents recently hosted a fashion parade to help raise funds for the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital Auxiliary.

At IRT, seniors lifestyle and care opens up a new world of possibilities and choice.

Our three retirement properties in Queensland at Bracken Ridge (IRT The Ridge), Buderim (IRT The Palms) and Currimundi (IRT Parklands) offer residents independent living as well as security, companionship, and relaxation. Residents organise their own daily activities, and participate at their own choice allowing them to continue working, or enjoying everything retirement has to offer at their own pace.

The area is fast becoming one of IRT’s most popular retirement destinations, and there has been plenty of interest from retirees wanting to move into one of the brand new villas.

More options on the way At Kawana Forest IRT will soon begin development on IRT lifestyle villas and a 60 bed care centre. In keeping with Sunshine Coast Council’s principles for positive ageing, approval has been granted and construction is just around the corner for this exciting new aged care community.

IRT is investing up to $75 million dollars over the next four years to allow residents the opportunity to retire close to home. At Buderim, Stage One of our plans to construct 85 new retirement villas is now complete. Local firm Gauld Project Services has already begun construction of Stage Two, meaning another 10 villas will soon become available before further homes begin development at a later date.

with Ken Wright

Do you really believe in your heart that work/life balance is beneficial to your team and your business? If you are not authentic in your thinking, actions and modelling, your insincerity will shine through. Ensure your spoken word is followed by the correct actions. I had a leader who promoted work/life balance at all employee ‘town hall’ events, yet on a day-

The benefits for employees of a six-month schedule with threeday weekends are obvious. But there’s one surprising effect of the changed schedule: better work gets done in four days than in five.

You arrive at work to find a note on your desk from him stating, “When you arrive please come and see me; I need to discuss something with you”. On his way out at end of day, he pops his head into your office saying, “Great, you are still here. I need this information for tomorrow’s Board meeting.”

When there’s less time to work, you waste less time. When you have a compressed work week, you tend to focus on what’s important. “Constraining time encourages quality time.”

If you really believe in work/life balance, do you have the courage to try the following? This has worked effectively for a successful software company in America:

business wake up

with Amanda Gore

Is it even possible?! Everyone I know feels that the world has sped up; that time goes much faster and there is never enough time to do anything, let alone everything! Overwhelm is a familiar feeling. In 1995 we apparently had perfect work/ life balance, with almost seven hours of free time every day according to research from Direct Line Insurance. In 2013 we have only two hours and 46 minutes. No wonder we feel overworked!

The major culprit it seems is technology and our need for constant connection. Emails follow us everywhere. Smart phones may be wonderful, but they also keep us constantly on alert. Between texts, emails, reminders and social media our ‘free’ time isn’t free any more. This information, combined with another piece of research on stress and how we perceive what happens to us, is critical. How we think about stress determines how our body reacts to it; whether we have a negative physiological response or not. Research from Harvard shows us that it isn’t the stress that causes disease – it’s how we think about what is happening. Do you perceive emails or your work as stressful? If so, the best way to achieve work/life balance or at least a sense of it is to change the way you are choosing to think. You could also try these ideas: 1. Unplug in the evenings. No phone, emails, computers, ipads, ipods or any other device

2. Choose to think about what is happening in your life in a way that has some positive connotation: eg. things might be challenging but you are growing and learning 3. Question the amount of extracurricular activities you and your children have. Perhaps a little more ‘sit around together and just be’ time would be a good idea 4. Make some time for yourself every day – even if it’s five minutes Wake up and win Your work/life balance is all about perception, not reality. Your perception, or how you think about work/life balance, REALLY matters.
