Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get. Dale Carnegie

WINNER SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR SUNSHINE COAST BUSINESS AWARDS Thank you, thank you, thank you Sunshine Coast. Thanks for reading, thanks for supporting us, thanks for advertising, thanks for everything. We are so humbled and so grateful to have been accepted by you in the way that we have over the past four years. What an absolute honour to receive such a prestigious award. The one thing about my acceptance speech that people keeping commenting on, (see QR code below) is the fact that we do not, and will not, print anything negative. The reason for this is that we are not about reporting news. Obviously if we were it would be quite difficult to have such a policy. We are about education, we are about information, we are about motivation. We want to inspire you to take your business to the next level, no matter where it is right now. And we are about connection. We believe the reason we won this award is that we are passionate about really making a difference here on the Sunshine Coast. This issue of the magazine is about celebration and relaxation. We are certainly still celebrating, and we absolutely have a plan to relax over the next month or so, so that we can recharge and come back next year with even more inspiration for you and your business. Thanks again and happy holidays to each and every one of you.

MAYORAL BUSINESS with Mark Jamieson

A recent Australia Institute study found Australians were working more overtime hours than ever – and being unpaid for them. The finding may be a sign of the times, where many struggling businesses are still overcoming the effects of the global financial crisis. And while it’s not for me to argue the shortcomings or otherwise of that finding, it concerns me that many businesses may be inadvertently moving even further away from a healthy work/life balance. Australians work hard – Sunshine Coasters work hard – but longer-term happiness means placing at least the same, or more, value on the other parts of your life, else they risk the ability to do that work effectively. The term ‘work hard, play hard’ is more than just enjoying sport or exercise outside of working hours – it’s a statement of the equality of purpose and attitude toward family

and recreational time as measured against work and career. At this time of the year, we each need to remind ourselves that, no matter our career aspirations, when all is said and done it’s the time and love shared with partners and family members that really matters. And to shortchange oneself here is damaging both to you and your family. The Christmas festive season is a time for celebrating with workmates and friends the best of the year gone, the hopes we have for the coming year – but above all, spending time giving to, and receiving from, our family. Many take their longest break of the year at this time – just as I will seek to do – and it’s important to try and get at least a couple of weeks to wind down properly, and de-stress from the daily routine. Unless you have other holiday plans, a few days won’t cut it.

I believe confidence is returning to the Sunshine Coast business community – and that means 2014 is likely to be a busy year for many on the work front. So I urge you to make the best of this festive period. Make each moment count with the ones whom you love. It is these moments that will matter the most in your memory, and the things you will treasure the most. While you enjoy your break, make sure to be ‘Town Proud’ and shop locally for your Christmas needs, and take visitors to our local cafés, restaurants and centres to help support our local tourism industry. May I wish each and every one of you a happy and safe festive season.

Palmer Motorama’s Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph is fit for

When Palmer Motorama opened its doors for the first time in mid-November this year, eager car buffs were be able to feast their eyes on the classic and the classy, with a spectacular range of vehicles on display. Not all are from a bygone era however. Some hail from more recent times but still rich in history, luxury and relevance. One such vehicle is the arctica white 1999 Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph which was purchased specifically for display at Palmer Motorama. The stunning ‘Roller’ is a prime example of turn-of-the-century luxury that is not only fit for royalty, but was purchased by royalty. A member of the Royal Family of Dubai was its first owner, ordering the car from new with a range of add-ons like a large sunroof, a rear seat entertainment system, chrome wheels and more.

A minute at... Daisy’s Place Daisy’s Place celebrated their second birthday on the 5th December. Daisy’s Place will always have a special place in the hearts of locals and travellers who have ventured their way along the Sunshine Coast. Built back in 1923 by ‘Daisy’ Emma Johnson and her husband Samuel Dorrington Johnson, it began life as The Rustic Cabin, offering home-made pies and Devonshire teas. It was a place where all walks of life could enjoy a lovingly prepared snack in the shady Jowarra Scenic Park. SOCIAL MEDIA BUSINESS with Lisa Harrison

You want your website, social channels, etc. to rank on this first page of Google for keywords relating to your business so that online users will click on your page before your competition. So, as an example, if you have a florist in Maroochydore, online you’d be aiming to rank near the top of the first page on Google for keyword searches like ‘florist Maroochydore’, or ‘bouquets Maroochydore’ or ‘floral arrangements Maroochydore’.

I’d like to share a pearl of digital wisdom as I’ve just come back from the Australian ProBlogger Conference for 2013 at the Gold Coast. As I put this article together readers must note: this is for bloggers and non-bloggers, alike. I won’t lecture you on ‘Why you should start a blog’ (you should) or ‘Why writing blogs consistently works’ (it does). Although inspired by ProBlogger 2013, this article is, in fact, about search engine optimisation (SEO). Anyone who has some sort of digital footprint should care about SEO. Without getting too complex, SEO is the great game we’re all trying to win online. Essentially it’s about crafting your online channels, like your website or social media profiles, to help you rank on the first page of Google.

Only use one keyword or phrase per blog and include synonyms for that keyword in the blog to show Google you’re not keyword bombing. Once a blog is written, it’s time to get tricky. Here’s my list of five tips to optimise each blog post so it helps your business rank for your keywords:

Boosting your ranking with keywords is where blogging can help your SEO.

FIVE STEPS TO USE YOUR BLOG TO CLIMB THE GOOGLE SEARCH LADDER

purposes by writing legitimate blogs about anything that relates to your industry, but always be injecting those important keywords.

How does your blog do this? Google’s search algorithms (how it chooses the pages it does in each search) are complicated and, for the most part, a secret; however, we do know that using keywords helps a great deal.

1. Make sure each blog’s image has the keywords for the related blog in the filename before uploading it to your blog. 2. Try to use headings to give the blog document structure. Inject keywords and synonyms for the keywords in these headings. 3. Google looks at all the content on your site and how it interrelates internally, so always link to at least one other blog you’ve published.

OK, for those who may already understand SEO, I admit there’s more to it than simply having keywords. For the rest of you, as an example, Google knows when websites attempt to ‘keyword-bomb’ a page. So if there is a webpage that simply has the phrase ‘Florist Maroochydore’ repeated again and again and so on, Google will mark this page as spam and reject it from search results altogether.

4. Make use of plug-ins like All in one SEO or Yoast. These are automated programs designed to help optimise your blogs for you.

Keywords are still number one on the list of items Google checks when ranking any online channels in search results; you just have to be clever about how you use them.

Lisa Harrison is the digital expert and co-director at POMO, a creative agency specialising in customer engagement. Lisa specialises in the field of digital and social media marketing.

So, back to blogging; what you should aim to do is use your blog for SEO

5. Write guest blog articles for other blog publishers, particularly blog publishers who have ‘authorship’. This means look for bloggers in Google searches whose faces come up as a little thumbnail photo beside their result.

Be a part of Lisa’s mentoring program by phoning 5441 6605 or visiting www.lisaharrison.com.au

Welcome mat rolled out for failure It’s fantastic to taste success and equally important to acknowledge and celebrate the stepping stones to those successes too. Talk to anyone successful in business and they will tell you that the challenges and tough times are where the learning lies. To welcome success you will need to roll the welcome mat out for failures too. Over a decade ago we started and ran a café in Buderim (The Chopping Block). We realised that the best ingredients list needed to include our mistakes. Trial and error with costings, menus and suppliers meant there were plenty of days we ate our ‘failures’ for dinner (lots of leftovers!). We were focused on finding the next win and that meant constantly recreating our offering throughout the seasons to captivate our clientele and cultivate our bank balance. Over 12 months this approach increased average customer spend by 30 per cent and our customer base by 65 per cent. By saying no to the fear of failure you are joining a league of business owners and entrepreneurs who have done the same. “Failures are reality checks”- Gerry Harvey, Harvey Norman

Each issue we will provide a framework to guide you through developing a strategic plan for your business.

1. Choose your belief about failure. Make it work FOR, not against your future growth. 2. Have a plan to respond. Don’t fail to learn and leverage. 3. Retain control. Test in small chunks.

If you are prepared to fail, you are prepared to flourish! Rebecca Ramsay Clear Light Capital SS 01 What’s your problem? More specifically, what problem do you solve? To ensure you are making strategic decisions you must clearly identify your customers and the problems you solve for them. 1. List all your customer groups (you likely have more than one) 2. For each customer segment define what is the problem you solve for them. 3. For each problem you identify, ask ‘what else...’ minimum three times! Want feedback? Email your work in progress to strategy@clearlightcapital.com.au for personalised feedback before the next BM issue.

Strategy for failing forward

4. Make it part of your business culture. Share your strategy.

Treat failure as feedback and it will become leverage for the changes for the better. If the first menu in the café didn’t sell, and we had kept it, well you can guess where that would have led.

OVERSEAS BUYERS When selling your business you will likely hear suggestions that there are agents capable of selling your business to overseas buyers for much more than what it is worth. Despite recent actions taken by the ACCC against the unscrupulous agents making these claims, the myth about overseas buyers continues to mislead business owners. Advertising overseas will likely cost more than it does in Australia and knowing how many buyers actually come from overseas could save you a lot of money. If you are contemplating selling your business now or in the near future consider this:

Blue Chip Manufacturing Selling a disposable product used by millions of Australians every day this amazing business was first established 25 years ago, now only one direct competitor nationwide. Run under full management, many staff have been in the business over 10 years. Serious Buyers with the financial capacity to complete transaction are encouraged to move quickly.

Time to Smell the Roses! Ideal for those seeking flexibility, diversity and endless growth. Exciting home based national franchise with huge $$$ invested in franchise documents, procedure manuals, online shopping cart and corporate branding. Generate income from hire, sales or leasing quality products, and royalties/upfront franchise fees from sales of new territories. Motivated seller is gifting this for only $100,000, INCLUDING $80,000 worth of stock.

If somebody has the ability to pay in excess of a business’s value, you can assume that they must have lots of money. Now, there are only a handful of ways to have lots of money, and most of them revolve around being a savvy investor or an astute business person. The reality is that this style of buyer would likely want to pay less than market value.

$100,000 inc stock

Only 2.6 per cent of all businesses sold were to overseas buyers and the majority were in Melbourne and Sydney.

$125,000 plus small S.A.V. Jeremy Bycroft 0418 829 235

Most agencies have all of their businesses listed on the world wide web. At times we do receive inquiries from around the globe, however, in 20 odd years I have only seen a few of these inquiries lead to sales. The numbers are so small compared to the amount of local buyers it would be unethical to use this in a presentation to potential sellers. A 2012 survey of Australian Institute of Business Brokers members confirmed this, finding that only 2.6 per cent of all businesses sold were to overseas buyers and the majority were in Melbourne and Sydney. In summary, there is a much better chance of selling local businesses to local buyers. So don’t be fooled into spending thousands of $$ on marketing your business overseas with shonky agents, in anticipation you will achieve above market value.

leadership matters LEIGH RORKE | LEAD ON PURPOSE

CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES AND STAY MOTIVATED TOWARDS YOUR PURPOSE

I make them stick at it, and they can be surprised at exactly how well they are actually doing. Think of that critical boss you had once, that gave negative feedback time and time again without so much as a word of praise. How motivated were you to work for them? Conversely the boss who gave you positive constructive feedback probably found that you were a loyal employee. As a leader within a business or the owner of your own business you need to be your own boss and celebrate your successes. Otherwise you will fall into the ‘never enough’ syndrome which steals the significance of your achievements, the wind from your sails and the joy from your life. Here’s the top ways you can celebrate your success and encourage your employees to do the same:

It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership. Nelson Mandela

So many of my clients are hardworking people who are their own biggest critic. They can tell you in infinite detail what they haven’t done well, what they ‘should’ be doing and what they intend to improve. Yet when I ask them what they have done well in the last few weeks, they are lost for words.

1. Review performance focusing on the successes FOR YOU: At the end of every day, journal five successes of the day. It doesn’t matter how minor they appear, it will give you a foundation for doing well tomorrow. FOR YOUR TEAM: Near the start of every business meeting or performance review, begin with a discussion or acknowledgement of the achievements, the ‘what we did well’ before you get to the ‘what we need to improve’ part of the discussion. 2. Celebrate the little successes with good feeling experiences FOR YOU: Celebrate your little successes as they come. Sometimes there is no one to applaud you when you know you have done a great job. So tell yourself ‘I rock!’ Jump up and down and pump your fist in the air a few times. Don’t worry, no one’s watching! FOR YOUR TEAM: One sales team acknowledged each sale with the ring of a bell and a fun song that the team would sing along to or dance to. What system can you set up to assist those in your team to experience a feeling of success? 3. External rewards Too much focus on external rewards for performance can develop into cultures of entitlement. They do however have an important role in acknowledging outstanding achievement or changing stubborn behaviours. FOR YOU: Link external rewards, like shouting yourself dinner at a nice restaurant, to completing work that you don’t enjoy doing or for sticking to a behaviour change that is difficult for you. FOR YOUR TEAM: If you have a bonus system, make sure you pay on time, and honour the agreement. Nothing drops morale quicker than unfulfilled promises. Reward top performers in order to keep them. 4. Celebrate the small things The joy is in the small stuff; a laugh, a smile, a beautiful sunset. Open your eyes to what’s great here. Now.

There is no better feeling than reaching a goal. Whether it stems from a business milestone or personal achievement, the feeling of accomplishment is universally rewarding. What to do though, after you have reached that goal and the celebration is over? Astronauts on the first moon landing were looked upon as heroes and the epitome of mankind’s achievement, but remarkably some soon suffered from depression. Why? Because after you have been to the moon, how can you set the bar higher? ALL THE LITTLE THINGS ADD UP It is anticipated that in the next two to three years, Queensland will have the highest electricity prices in Australia. Make sure you are in the best position to combat rising prices.

BOdy CORPORatE Try this self assessment: You’ve secured the lowest price you possibly can for your electricity.

You’ve identified you’re high consumption appliances or machinery.

You’ve lowered your costs of hot water supply. You’ve secured your lowest LPG price possible.

 Make a profit for on-selling electricity to tenants

You’ve minimised your standby power as much as possible.

OR  Reduce your tenants’ electricity costs

You’ve invested in energy efficiency. If you ticked all the boxes then it’s a job well done. If not, there are many small steps you can take to see if you can make some quick savings without spending a lot of money. It pays to check. Recently we identified an incorrect invoice from a large retailer that was 15 per cent higher than the tariff they should have been allocated. This totalled over $1000 just for having the wrong tariff on the invoice.

BUSINESS OWNERS  Reduce your electricity costs  Energy efficiency solutions  Increase business profits

LPG contracts are variable terms depending on the type of installation and the payback of the equipment for the retailer; so always ask if you are not sure.

IS NOW THE RIGHT TIME TO SELL? We are now coming into the Christmas/New Year period and I am being asked by a lot of sellers is now the right time to sell? The Sunshine Coast has had an amazing amount of positive activity in the last three months which is going to keep carrying on over the Christmas break. We are seeing more holiday makers from all around Australia starting to look at what we have to offer here on the Coast, and they like what they are seeing.

With a real shortage of mid-range property on the Sunshine Coast it is creating competition between buyers and driving up the price to levels that six months ago we did not think were achievable. With the southern markets like Sydney and Melbourne going great guns this is having a great result on the Queensland market, with Sydney’s median price now reaching $750,000 and Brisbane’s hitting $450,000. This means that sellers in Sydney can sell their family home and move to the Coast and buy a similar property and still leave money in the bank. This means that the large executive style properties in great estates or suburbs are getting a lot of attention from buyers that can buy right now and with very few conditions. Over the next coming months we are going to see this intensify and spill out to the other areas of our market. With a real shortage of mid-range property on the Sunshine Coast, it is creating competition between buyers and driving up the price to levels that six months ago we did not think were achievable. I am anticipating that as we come into the New Year that anyone who is on the market is going to have the chance of getting a fantastic result as I predict we are going to see the best market we have seen in five years.

HOW DO YOU INTRODUCE YOUR CHILDREN TO PEOPLE? “This is Sharon. She is shy.” “This is Brian. He is quiet until he gets to know you.” Those two statements may well be true, or had been at some stage, but every time Sharon or Brian enter the social space they have a label defining and often limiting them.

CONFIDENCE IS EVERYTHING FOR YOU, YOUR CHILDREN AND YOUR TEENS YOUTH ARTS CONFERENCE • A platform for creative youth to learn and develop from Creative Industry professionals (youth from 12 – 18) • Provision of quality professional training in the form of conferences/master classes/come and try days

Whatever pathway your child takes in life, the capacity to speak and relate confidently is essential to their ultimate success. Here are some questions to ask yourselves as parents. What are your expectations for your children’s future?

• Join us from 16 to 20 December for five fun filled days of Theatre, Stand-up, Magic, Visual Art, Creative Writing, Physicality and Voice.

What will be the defining moment when you consider they have become successful? Your first responses may be wealth, success, doctor, lawyer, environmentalist, elite athlete.

DEVELOP THROUGH DRAMA • Self-development through drama for children 3-17 to gain essential social skills

I ask you to consider these instead as the FIRST and ONLY important life outcomes for your children: Confidence

• Children being taught to step up and speak out clearly and confidently

Confidence can be a fragile thing in children, as we all know.

Helen O’Grady

We need to ensure that our kids have emotional intelligence, resilience to continue and social skills to engage with the world around them.

LEARN TO WRITE, MASTER PUBLIC SPEAKING, ALL AGES • Creating articulate and confident adults, teens and kids

When that confidence becomes damaged for whatever reason, it takes specific action to remedy the situation.

• Training in writing skills (including grammar and punctuation) and speaking skills (master the fear of public speaking)

Shouting “Speak up” and constantly berating the child for shyness is counterproductive. It may well be entrenching a lifetime burden.

• Key note speaker

My view is that communication skills are as significant as competency in Maths, English and Science and belong side by side with any other talent development.

BE A HEALTHY RELAXED YOU THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

2014 ‘It’s Your Move’

As the holiday season arrives many of us look forward to spending time with family and friends, sharing in the joys of the season. For some people who have been exposed to a traumatic event, the holiday season may bring up negative feelings, especially at this time of year thinking about loved ones who have passed away; which can be painful, particularly for those who have recently lost someone. Even people who have not been exposed to trauma can find the holidays to be a stressful time. Buying the right gifts, budget issues, time management issues, crowd hassles, and sometimes problematic family interactions are stressors that are present for many individuals during the holiday season. In fact, stress during the holiday period is such a real problem that there’s a psychological diagnosis for it, ‘Seasonal Affective Disorder’ (SAD). So how can you celebrate this time of year while being a healthy relaxed you? Hypnotherapist Michael Perez, researched over 100 stress reduction interventions; here’s what he considers to be five of the best for this time of year: 1. Do less, enjoy more – Avoid going overboard to please others, whether it’s shopping, cooking, or attending every event. Take better care of yourself by saying ‘no’ at least once, if not more. 2. Take a walk –The rhythm and repetition of walking has a mesmerising effect on your brain similar to that of hypnosis. It decreases anxiety and improves restful sleep. Aim for a brisk half hour walk every day. 3. Crack up often – Having a hearty laughing episode reduces stress hormones and in turn helps the immune cells function better. 4. Take a whiff of citrus – Researchers studying depression have found that certain citrus fragrances boost feelings of wellbeing and alleviate stress by upping levels of norepinephrine, a hormone that affects mood. Dab a little lemon or orange essential oil on a tissue and take a whiff of it a few times day when you’re in or going into stressful situations. 5. Hypnosis – Sometimes a little guidance can have huge benefits. Researchers have found that a high number of people just don’t know how to de-stress themselves. That’s why pharmaceutical companyies and illicit drugs are billion dollar industries. Clinical hypnotherapy, and self-hypnosis techniques enable you to cope better with stressors that may be present in your life. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Michael offers many years of experience and promises he won’t give up on anyone until they get beyond what’s troubling them. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off 1986 Maybe it’s time for a change. Try to do less this summer, and you may be surprised at how much more you do. Sounds confusing? Think about the things you would like to do. Go ahead and write them down. Now think about the things you would really love to do, and don’t forget to pop in a few relaxation and celebration ideas. Now choose three things from these lists and focus on doing these only. Rejuvenating and refreshing at this time of the year will add a new dimension to your business and you in 2014. I’ve just taken a break. Relaxed with a few pina coladas poolside. But then... I abseiled down a 50 metre waterfall after a two mile climb up a mountain to breath taking views. I asked myself, “Why do I do this to myself?” Especially once we got to look down the waterfall at the 50 metre slippery vertical drop... ahhhhh... however, the realisation for me was I like to keep pushing the boundaries. It is great to be able to push yourself out of your comfort zone and see what you can achieve. We know the mind needs to be challenged and kept alert, so we are constantly challenging our clients. Then changes and perceived problems are able to be dealt with more easily and innovatively. For me, it is a must that I walk the talk... with my abseiling adventure, the celebration was definitely big once we hit the bottom, but the celebration has continued with the family thinking Mum is an adrenalin junkie, and the staff saying, “Wow, weren’t you scared?” Heck yes, but I set the challenge and completed it. To inspire and be inspired makes you feel like you are living. So go ahead take some time out; do something that you would really love to do, not just something you have to do. Set yourself up for peak performance in 2014 and have fun doing it! Merry Christmas to all our wonderful readers. We wish you all a prosperous and fun New Year!

How many small business owners use social media channels to their full potential? The online world has grown so rapidly that business people have struggled to understand what they need to do to grow their business. When you have a chance to reflect on your business, I’d suggest learning how to use existing online marketing channels or social media platforms to their fullest potential. Don’t chase the next big thing online. There’s no need to keep searching for new channels when there is so much that can be done using the main social media channels to their full advantage. Stick to the basics. Do you know your target markets and what appeals to them? Are your social media accounts set up correctly with consistent marketing messages? Are you regularly posting educational, helpful messages and engaging with your audience? Does your website support your online marketing efforts with good usability and calls to action? Do you avoid the mistakes of online marketing such as the ‘hard sell’?

Rejuvenate Marketing are THE experts in social media and have helped our business to make a real splash into new markets for us. We strongly recommend their expertise for any business. Rob Shackleford, Director, ‘CleanWater Australia & NZ

Do you know the basics of content marketing? The goal of social media marketing is to have many people choose to listen to you. You need to represent your industry, a lifestyle or a solution to the problem. If you’re talking only about yourself or your business, no-one is listening. But if you become a useful resource for others, you encourage an audience and ultimately more opportunities for business growth.

DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH YOUR COMPANY IS SPENDING ON PRINTING? Most business owners are shocked when they learn exactly how much they spend on printing each year. According to research from PricewaterhouseCoopers, the average employee: Makes 10,000 copies or prints each year Costs your company up to $1200 in printing annually Wastes 17 percent of all printed documents. Employers rarely have knowledge of the true cost of their printing activities, and rarely monitor or control employee printing output. But, without controls and measures, waste can be substantial. Managed Print Services can help your business achieve immediate and long-term cost savings. MPS essentially takes over the management of a company’s printers to increase efficiency and consolidate printing costs.

Employers rarely have knowledge of the true cost of their printing activities, and rarely monitor or control employee printing output. But, without controls and measures, waste can be substantial.

*

MPS clients enjoy the benefits of working with one trusted provider for all printing needs. Clients receive remote monitoring of printers, supplies, and service on-demand, as well as tailored management reports regarding the company’s printers. Service costs are summarised in convenient invoices that include all printrelated costs for a given period of time, usually quarterly. Clients experience a second wave of cost savings when account managers provide expert recommendations based on reports of the printer fleet. Suggestions are made for printer placement based on utilisation and strategic hardware purchases, especially when the technology in multifunction printers can improve workflow, increase productivity, save costs, and replace expensive copiers and legacy printers. This is all part of the customer-centric objective of MPS. All these measures can add up to as much as 30 percent savings in printer-related costs, often amounting to thousands of dollars in savings for a single client. CELEBRATE AND RELAX Another year coming to a close can mean many different things to different employers from an HR perspective. For some employers this can truly be the silly season, when the focus is on engaging enough new staff to cover the festive period, coordinating rosters to cover the increase in business, minimising staffing costs to make it worthwhile with the public holidays, while avoiding their own Christmas functions and hoping to celebrate and relax in the New Year.

The HRM team would love to meet you.

For other employers things are winding down, leave is being planned so everyone can enjoy a break, gifts are being organised for staff and clients, bonuses may be being given out and Christmas parties are being attended in full force.

Think about what you can be putting in place for your people management to allow everyone a chance to celebrate and relax and approach 2014 with gusto!

Whatever form your silly season takes, it is still the critical people management issues that, if handled well, will allow you to take some time out to celebrate and relax, whether it is over Christmas or into the New Year. If your staff are paid correctly during this period, recognised for their contribution during the year in some way, made aware of the organisation’s achievements during 2013, engaged in the work they are doing and looking forward to the plans being made for 2014, everyone will be more able to celebrate and relax and be ready to make those business plans a reality in 2014.

They have your recruitment solutions. If you’re looking for a recruitment consultancy that treats you with respect, that really listens and takes time to match you with the right job or right candidate, then HRM can provide you with all of this and more - working quickly, efficiently and with exceptional results.

It’s time to smile!

WHAT IS ACID WEAR? We all constantly subject our teeth and mouths to many different acidcontaining foods and drinks. These can range from acidic compounds added to foods to make them stable for storage, to sports drinks, fruit and fruit juices, certain types of herbal teas and of course wine and alcohol. Certain medications, low saliva flow and acid reflux are contributors to acid wear as well. All of these factors can slowly and gradually cause the teeth to wear away. To put things into perspective, our teeth are a little like pumpkins – they have a tough outer skin (the enamel) and the softer fleshy part underneath (the dentine - not nearly as hard) and then pulp in the middle (the nerve in a tooth). The enamel is typically very strong but is susceptible to wearing down by acid in the modern diet. Once the enamel is gone, which typically takes a considerable amount of time, the more yellow and sensitive dentine of the tooth becomes exposed. Being a lot softer, the dentine can wear away much more quickly.

As always, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of treatment! BEFORE

AFTER

If left untreated, acid wear on teeth can be destructive, dissolving the enamel and dentine. Nerves can become exposed and die, leaving the patient needing root canal therapy or loss of the tooth through extraction. Extreme acid wear can leave minimal tooth structure in need of complex treatment plans to rebuild teeth in order to ensure patients have adequate biting and chewing ability. Acid wear can occur in all age groups. There can be different causes for different people. If this sounds like a concern of yours or someone you know, a thorough examination by a dentist can determine the cause or causes of acid wear and how quickly things are deteriorating. There are many options available. Often it is enough to stop the casual factors and strengthen the remaining teeth with special creams and gels, or make simple changes to the diet. Occasionally the wear has reached the tipping point where further treatment may be required. As always, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of treatment!

21ST CENTURY APPROACHES TO MOTIVATE STAFF TO ACHIEVE Leaders and managers make choices about the environment they create, to achieve their vision and mission. Some treat the organisation as a machine and ensure set processes and procedures are mechanically completed and acted upon. In this environment, results and benchmarks are valued ahead of the people who achieve these results. Bonuses are often the carrot to reward workers who achieve the desired outcomes, balanced with a ‘big stick’ approach for the lower achieving staff. An alternative is to see the organisation as a living organism where the focus is on the people within the organisation who achieve the results. This is shown in care, professional relationships, empowerment, trust, and high expectation of employees. Team members are valued and individual talent and creativity is nurtured in this type of work environment. The number one asset in a living organism work environment is the staff, and investment in the staff brings motivation and achievement. So, in which environment would you like to work? Most people would prefer an organisation that values its staff. There is debate, however, on what motivates an employee in this type of environment. In Daniel Pink’s book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, new research that the traditional carrot-and-stick approach – which focuses on rewarding sought-after behaviours and punishing the behaviours you wish to discourage – may actually inhibit creativity, diminish performance and result in short-term, narrow thinking. The carrot-and-stick approach worked well for typical tasks of the early 20th century – routine, unchallenging and highly controlled. For these tasks, where the process is straightforward and critical and creative thinking is not required, rewards can provide a small motivational boost without any harmful side effects. Pink proposes a revised approach to motivation, which focuses on the innate human needs to direct our own lives (autonomy), to learn and create new things (mastery), and to do better by ourselves and our world (purpose). This type of setting motivates staff, increases energy levels and moves people into a flow where their energy levels are high, they are ‘in the moment’ and most productive. Pink’s revised motivation theory can assist your organisation to motivate its employees in the correct way: Autonomy – provide employees with autonomy over some aspects of their work. Mastery – allow employees to become better at something that matters to them. Purpose – communicate a clear purpose and place equal emphasis on purpose maximisation as profit maximisation. Knowing how to motivate employees in the 21st century will develop the professional capital of a high-achieving business.

USE TECHNOLOGY TO HELP YOUR BUSINESS SURVIVE THE HOLIDAYS All through the year we’re hard at work, making sure that production is meeting demand, that sales targets are being met, and that customer service levels are high so our businesses are profitable. And hopefully the reward for all that hard work is the two or three weeks of holidays that we try to take, squeezed in between work demands, sometime during the year… But can we really relax when we’re away from our ‘babies’ for two or three weeks, not knowing how it’s going? Yes, we can! Apart from setting up robust, resilient systems to keep the wheels moving, there are ways to be away from the office while still keeping our finger on the pulse: 1. Using true web-based work management systems – free WiFi is commonplace around the world now, and a quick daily glance at operational workloads using a portable tablet device puts your mind at rest. 2. Email on smartphones – ‘listening in’ to company email conversations brings peace of mind that it is still all on track. 3. Free ‘smart’ communications internationally – avoid those horrible telephone bills and stay in direct communication at no cost, by using free communication applications such as Skype, WhatsApp, iMessage, Viber, soft-phones and others. 4. Use the cloud – if you find yourself suddenly needing to intervene by having to complete a proposal, submit an important tender, or deal with an urgent application yourself, have these at your fingertips by using file-sharing programs such as Dropbox, SkyDrive or Google Drive. 5. If all the above fails, and you have to be back in the office temporarily, there are methods of putting you back at your desktop remotely, quickly and affordably, using programs such as Remote Desktop, Teamviewer, TightVNC and many others.

By using the above tools and technology, and knowing that your business is surviving just fine without you, you can get the downtime you really need, and come back invigorated and refreshed for next year.

When life rains on you,

INSURANCE THROUGH SUPER Many people who believe that they can’t afford Life insurance, Total and Permanent Disability insurance or Income Protection insurance conclude that they simply can’t have that safety net in their lives at all. These people continue on, hoping that nothing happens, which is an absolute gamble. There is a way to achieve the security of insurance without the cost coming out of the hip pocket or family budget, and that is to run these insurances through a superannuation fund. What this essentially means, is that the balance in your super fund pays for those premiums. This can be an excellent option for people with self-managed super funds or wage and salary earners alike. There are, as always, rules to setting this up so it is recommended that your Life Insurance Adviser set this up for you. There are other benefits to this strategy apart from the obvious one of assisting with cash flow. For example in most circumstances the super fund can claim a tax deduction for the cost of the premiums. So it’s tax efficient because the premiums are effectively paid with pre-tax money. There are different considerations when setting up insurance through superannuation, such as tax benefits and disadvantages, binding and nonbinding beneficiary agreements and many more. It’s also important to keep in mind that you would be using up some of your retirement savings. It is essential to know that not every superannuation fund offers every type of life insurance cover. The terms might be a little less comprehensive than a policy owned directly, particularly for TPD. It may be wise to have a strategy where half of the TPD is inside super and half is not. To find out more about this strategy and whether it could be suitable for you, seek financial advice.

It’s AOK because we...  Offer a complete mobile service  Offer an after hours service  Tailor the most effective insurance strategy for you and your family  Focus on demystifying Insurance  Use uncomplicated terminology and good communication Brian* was 39, married, with two children, and a mortgage. He didn’t smoke and rarely drank alcohol. He was fit and healthy, but decided he needed Income Protection and Life cover, “just in case”. One year later, while he was on a job site, he felt a massive pain in his chest and fell to the ground. He awoke in hospital and was told he had suffered a burst artery in his heart and that doctors had performed open heart surgery, but because he was so healthy and young, he would be back at work in about 12 weeks. Seven days into recovery he suffered a stroke. Suddenly he was looking at more than six months off paid work and a lot of physio work. AOK Risk Solutions expertly guided him through and worked closely with the claims manager to ensure Brian and his family were paid on time, every time. Brian recovered, and his family kept their beloved home.*not his real name

Now, there’s your relaxation all booked and paid for. What’s your biggest worry about leaving the family home without your ever vigilant eye? Is it possible that your extremely popular offspring might invite every one of their 6000 facebook ‘friends’ to a quiet little party while ‘the oldies’ are away? Now, there’s a celebration you could be talking about for decades to come. Maybe the local break and enter gang has noticed you packing all your holiday gear into the taxi. Nothing to celebrate if that happens. Could your long awaited holiday be more relaxing if you had an effective security surveillance system installed at your home or business? Human behaviour, even that of your kids, changes when a person knows that they are being watched. “Better not have the party at our place; the olds have got cameras installed.” As for the local break and enter boys, you may not stop them plying their skills but you may well move them down the road a bit. Most would pick an easier target. Modern security surveillance solutions really do work. Even older technology digital video recorder-based systems offer clear-picture, workable solutions these days. Today’s high resolution analogue cameras are an enormous leap forward in technology from those that were available 10 years ago. Standard analogue cameras offer 700TV lines, infrared floodlighting, auto iris, varifocal lenses and metal vandal-resistant housings, for a fraction of the price you would have paid for very ordinary cameras 10 years ago. Latest technology digital IP (computer-based) surveillance solutions support a wide range of megapixel cameras that offer a level of clarity not provided by standard analogue cameras. The family business, based in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, was honoured with a Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business Award in the category of Food and Beverage producer, then, a Silver medal at the Queensland Tourism Awards for the Excellence in Food Tourism Award and a triumphant victory when named ‘Best of the Best’ at the Australian Grand Dairy Awards in Melbourne. “Winning these accolades has confirmed our products’ quality, taste and popularity,” said Master Cheesemaker, Markus. “It proves what we say every day is true – that dairy products really are good for you!” added Sara, “We are honoured with these wins as it recognises achievement not only in food production and good business practices, but our Tourism industry strengths as well. Huds &Toke by Vanessa Webster Sunshine Coast business, Huds and Toke, is a 100 per cent Australian made and owned company that has found a desirable niche in the equestrian market by producing and manufacturing a range of training treats for horses. Both from rural Queensland, husband and wife team Emma and Russell Gibbon, moved to the Sunshine Coast about 13 years ago. With two children, Emma has owned numerous businesses over the years, yet has always held her passion for horses close and has always vowed to become involved in the equine industry one day. Now she has achieved just that. Emma’s passion for horses was a driving force as she strived to find a way to integrate her passion into a business. From there, Emma’s vision was to create a clean, easy to use, all natural training treat available for every rider and horse enthusiast. “There are some stable treats out there, however, as far as we know, we are the first to develop 48 ISSUE 57

for both the horse and the individual in so many ways,” adds Emma.

The development and research process was enormous. As a result of their research, Emma and Russell noticed a wonderful opportunity to create a brand from scratch. Emma says, “We decided to design a product, design a process, prototype it, test, re-test and at the same time we underwent a branding project with the help of some branding professionals.”

It has been a big year for Huds and Toke, winning the Sunshine Coast Innovation Centre Business Award. “This was a very exciting development, which we worked hard to achieve,” says Emma. Following this, they won the Sunshine Coast Business Awards for the category of Creative/Knowledge/ Development Industries Large Business

Huds and Toke’s training treats are aimed at the leisure horse market, that is, the pony club and equestrian segment of the equine industry. “We have targeted this segment primarily because this is the segment that requires a high level of human interaction with horses, and, as such, is highly important to have well trained animals,” explains Emma. The product, made from human grade ingredients, is being distributed to stores Australia-wide and aims to provide as much help as possible to the training process, helping to increase the bond between owner and animal. “This is beneficial

over the next four years on the Sunshine Coast and in south-eastern Queensland.

IRT expansion at Buderim rolls on

Part of that was the acquisition of three Oasis retirement resorts at Buderim, Bracken Ridge and Currimundi, plus a further site at Kawana Forest where IRT is planning a 60-bed care centre, and 111 lifestyle community villas.

Over the past six months a massive expansion has been taking place at IRT The Palms in Buderim.

IRT Group is one of Australia’s largest community based seniors lifestyle and care providers. We have been providing seniors lifestyle and care solutions for over 40 years. The multi-award winning IRT Group manages communities in more than 30 locations across NSW, ACT and QLD, providing care solutions to over 9000 customers.

IRT providing new services to the Sunshine Coast

The lifestyle community is fast becoming one of the most popular in south-eastern Queensland due to its close proximity to the Mooloolaba coastline, and the Bruce Highway.

IRT Residents raise funds for Flying Doctors

In November IRT began a new chapter in the organisation’s 44 year history by officially launching In-Home Care services on the Sunshine Coast. IRT In-Home Care provides wellness and care solutions for clients within the comfort of their own home, while allowing them to be a part of the greater IRT Lifestyle and Care family. The great news for the Sunshine Coast community as a whole is that not only do residents now have the opportunity to access IRT’s In-Home Care services, but new jobs are being created to cater for the growing needs of the local population. Our first In-Home Care employee joined our team in mid-November just two days before we began working with our first client, and the IRT team will expand to meet growing demands. If you or someone you know may be interested in accessing IRT’s In-Home

This community at Kawana Forest will be known as IRT Woodlands and construction is due to begin there in 2014.

Last month IRT The Palms hosted an art exhibition to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctors Service of Australia. Residents are already starting to move into the villas constructed during Stage 1 of constructions, with Stages 2, 3 and 4 nearing completion. All of the expansion work has been undertaken by local firm Gauld Project Services, providing much needed work for local sub-contractors. In total 84 new villas are being constructed at IRT The Palms, taking the total amount of villas to 139 by the end of June 2014.

A new community on its way Last August IRT announced its intention to spend $75 million

with Dranko Magic Wow, is it that time already? Has the year really gone by so quickly? Yes it has, and I must say what a year it was. For us here at Business Matters, we set out a few milestones this year and after a lot of hard work I think we got there. The one thing we did not expect was to win the Small Business of the Year at the recent Sunshine Coast Business Awards. Thank you to everyone who voted for us, and all the support we have received throughout the year. This

This is your business magazine, Sunshine Coast. What we have put into each issue is what you have asked for. So from the whole Business Matters team we would like to say thank you so much. The more we all work together and help each other out, the stronger we become. Please be safe over the festive season; enjoy family and friends, the joy of Christmas and give yourself a good pat on the back for a job well done this year. Just before I go, I want to say a big thank you to the surf lifesavers at Kawana SLSC. Our dogs went missing and a lovely couple found them on the beach having a ball and took them

to the lifeguards. They had tags with their names and mobile number but the number was a bit faded. By the time they got the correct number they had made four or five calls. Thank you Kawana SLSC of once again going beyond the call for duty. You all do such a great job on our beaches and still take the time to find the owners of some very loved dogs. Happy holidays, everybody. Until next time, stay happy, don’t sweat the small stuff, and keep smiling. Don’t worry, be happy. Dranko Magic is the other half of Business Matters Magazine. He is our Operations Manager; this role includes professional photography, looking after all the invoicing, accounts, debt collection and also the delivery of the magazine.

It is usually about this time of year, Christmas, when we tell ourselves we’ve done well. And there’s nothing wrong with giving yourself a pat on the back. If indeed you have done well you should reward yourself. But I would like to encourage you to also reward those who work with you and have helped your success come to pass, remembering that it is rarely just one person who makes things happen in our businesses.

Kick back. Relax. Enjoy life. by Paul Barrs There comes a time when we’ve done our hard work, put in maximum effort and done the best we possibly can. Then we have the opportunity to kick back, relax, enjoy life, celebrate and have fun.

That being said, I want you to also remember that Christmas is a good time for new opportunities. It’s a great time to look for new customers, new business and new sales.

Not Just Christmas

First things first: remember that Christmas isn’t the only holiday in the year! You should not just have a Christmas marketing plan but an overall holiday marketing plan for every major holiday each year. Whilst it’s probably too late to do anything about it now, the ideal holiday marketing plan has a 90- to 120-day lead-up time. You need to prepare for

promotions, put policies and procedures in place, write advertisements, create ad accounts and so on. These things take time and must be done well in advance so that you have at least two to three months of getting your customers ready to buy from you. Here’s a good thought though: don’t only think of making money this holiday season. Think also of spreading joy and doing good. Recently I posted to my Facebook page, “Respect for those businesses who each year give a percentage of their income to their favourite cause.” Perhaps you could consider doing the same, or at least have one cause that you commit to each year – not just a five dollar pen but a $500 or more donation.

Would you like fries with that?

As you mark out your Christmas promotions, I want you to keep this one thing in mind: don’t only sell what you have normally sold. Instead, look to target the season with musthave holiday items that are somehow

related to your business. This could require some creative thinking, and that’s okay. Get the staff together, grab the family, ask them for ideas. Look at things you can do in your business with products and/or services that are above and beyond what you might normally do. Add-on sales is what I’m talking about. Your customers will buy what your customers will buy. The way to increase profitability is to addon, “Would you like fries with that?” For those of you who have a shop, something in the real world (not just virtual), here’s my best suggestion for you. Keep your festive music balanced. I can promise you now that I and many people I know will not be happy shopping somewhere where Christmas carols and nothing else are playing. Don’t get me wrong, I like Christmas carols, but not as much as I like the current popular music. So, if you do have the opportunity to play music in your store, mix it up, make it fun - don’t scare the customers away. Don’t send your staff spare and make them wish they’d rather claw

their eyeballs out than turn up to work and listen to Christmas carols 24/7. Happy staff, happy customers.

If you can, in your area/in your business, why not offer some nice holiday treats with each sale or even to those who just stop by – “Here’s something for you.” It doesn’t have to be a food item, but something small and cheery, something festive. If you sell products that people buy and then walk out with, offer free gift wrapping. Yes, free. What a wonderful way to make someone’s day. Here’s a tip of what not to do: it’s tip number 15 of 101 Ways to Upset Your Customers: sell them a product and make them pay you to wrap it. Not such a good idea.

NUMBER BUSINESS We also have to accept that the Coast economy is only as good as the Queensland economy. Since the barmy days of the early 2000s when everybody wanted to live (or holiday) here, there have been struggles. The population growth that was a key business driver for a wide range of retail, building activity and personal and professional services fell sharply.

with Ted Fitzgerald

Sunshine Coast’s Numbers Expert

THE PAST IS IMPORTANT... But the future is crucial! Big picture numbers: As 2013 draws to a close, more and more ‘numbers’ from a wide range of sources suggest the difficulties Sunshine Coast business has had to cope with over the past five years are starting to recede and better times are coming. So if you have been feeling challenged... think of it like trying to surf on a flat day. No matter what you do, you end up looking a dill because the waves aren’t there to ride. Although the mining boom helped some (but not all) through recent years, the combined effect of the GFC on bank lending and property, the rising Aussie dollar on tourism and a series of natural disasters have all conspired to hammer local business.

But the good news is that population growth appears to be ‘heading north’ again, with strong natural increase and more overseas settlers. Queensland GSP and Retail figures confirm this. Also important will be the rise in southern housing prices. This difference in prices can trigger a return to days when people in Sydney and Melbourne could sell there, buy here AND put money in the bank. Local numbers: Looking ahead, perhaps the most important local numbers are the tourism figures. Average length of stay increased strongly despite a fall in visitor numbers. Intrastate visitor nights increased three per cent including a 16 per cent increase in intrastate visitor nights, lifting the average length of stay to 3.5 nights. The number of visitor nights from Brisbane increased five per cent including an 11 per cent increase in holiday visitor nights. Additionally, the building figures are again growing strongly with ‘attached’ dwelling approvals almost doubling.

Q: Can you give me some tips on how to get into the property market? Six manageable steps to successful property ownership Often the decision to purchase your first property, whether it is a home or an investment, involves equal measures of excitement and anxiety, and the magnitude of the process can be daunting. For those considering buying property, it may help to break the process down into six manageable steps.

with a fine tooth comb and ensure that there is enough time built in for pest and building inspections. If making an offer on a property as opposed to buying at auction, check to see if the contract includes a cooling off period and/or subject to finance clause, and the settlement period suits you and your current living arrangements. Your solicitor or conveyancer can help with this step and may request changes on your behalf. 5) Finalise your finance by having current information on hand

1) Start the savings habit early Most lenders require a deposit of at least five per cent of the property’s value, but bigger is even better and may help you avoid costly Lenders’ Mortgage Insurance. The discipline of budgeting and saving regularly is also great preparation for managing the ongoing costs of property ownership.

After making an offer/placing a bid on a property, it is time to

2) Explore your home loan options A home loan is likely to be the key to your property purchase. Potential property owners should have a good grasp on their ability to borrow money before they start the property search. There is a range of home loan options on offer. That’s why it is crucial to set aside time with a professional mortgage broker to explore the loan types available to you, including how much you can borrow and the deposit size needed. This will help you to set realistic savings targets and timeframes.

provide a list of all the documentation you will need to have

finalise your finance. For final loan approval you will need all your up-to-date financial details. This includes verifying your current income, savings and assets as well as liabilities, including any outstanding debts, loans, etc. In preparation for unconditional loan approval, a mortgage broker, such as ourselves, can ready so that the application proceeds as quickly as possible. 6) Before settlement, gather useful information from the agent and seller To help you plan your new budget as a property owner, find out information about the property such as electricity and gas suppliers, when the strata and/or council rates are due, priority repairs or maintenance and any other costs associated with the property

3) Get ahead of the pack by having your finance pre-approved Property sellers may be attracted to buyers who have pre-approved finance over those who don’t. Loan pre-approval lets you head into the purchase process knowing the maximum amount you have to spend on the property, giving you confidence to buy at auction or negotiate on price and saving you time looking at places that aren’t in your price range. Keep in mind pre-approved finance is typically a limited time offer and it does not lock you into a loan.

so that you can start to shop around for the savviest deals.

4) Look carefully at the contract, the devil can be in the detail Once you have found a suitable property, go through the contract

Would you like to ask Linda a question? Email your question to Linda.ireland@mortgagechoice.com.au

There will always be eventualities that can’t be planned for, but if property buyers start with the aspects of the property purchase process that are within their control, then the sale will typically run smoothly. I would also suggest that buyers-to-be keep in touch with their mortgage broker after the purchase to make sure they are always receiving the most competitive, well-suited loan possible.

9 hills for charity

If you’re looking for a great way to justify that extra serve of Christmas pudding while supporting a great cause, the Buderim 9 Challenge will once again push cyclists of all skill levels when they take on the hills of Buderim on Sunday, 22 December. The ride, which will raise muchneeded funds for the Cerebral Palsy League, has built a reputation as an iconic fitness event as riders tackle the 75-kilometre track over Buderim’s toughest hills within the three-hour timeframe. Event organiser Greg Paix, from the Sunshine Coast Cycling Club, said the event raised over $15,000 last year and attracted competitors from far and wide.

from as far as Melbourne and Sydney to participate.” John Gallagher, director at Argon Law and principal partner of the Buderim 9 Challenge, said it was great to support such a worthwhile cause while encouraging people to get fit in the lead-up to Christmas, even if it means only taking on part of the route.

“We are once again thrilled with the number of registrations coming in and we hope to achieve record numbers when registrations close on 16 December,” Greg said.

“While we have a great field of riders tackling all nine hills many, including myself, are opting to ride just one or two legs to participate in what has fast become a local Christmas tradition,” said Mr Gallagher.

“This event has become increasingly popular over the past four years and we now have people travelling

“There is such a great cycling community on the Sunshine Coast and we are expecting that over 300

riders will participate this year, helping to reach a target of $30,000 for local Sunshine Coasters with cerebral palsy and related physical disabilities.” The ride will start at 5am and finish with a ceremony and sausage sizzle at 8am at the Buderim Lions Park. In addition to Argon Law the event has attracted key sponsors and supporters in the Sunshine Coast Council, Hall Contracting, Accumul8, Ord Minnett, Pacific Radiology, Next Property Group, Mick’s Meats, Buderim Lions Club, Fenwick’s Fruit Barn and Ignite Digital Marketing. CREATING BUSINESS with Darren Blake

WHEN IS IT TIME TO REBRAND YOUR BUSINESS? Your brand is the public face of your business. A strong and coherent brand speaks volumes about your business’s core ethos, products, services and internal culture. The term ‘rebranding’ is open to a wide range of interpretations. Rebranding is an involved process that requires much more thought and process than first meets the eye, extending far beyond simply creating a new logo.

3. Your business has grown and evolved Some businesses grow, develop and reach a level where they look nothing like what they started out as. When this happens their old brand becomes superseded and can no longer accurately reflect who they are. If your business reaches this stage, you risk alienating your customer base and potentially reducing your revenue stream.

Brand giants such as Nike, Apple, Shell and Woolworths continually evolve, adapting their public image and visual identity to meet the ongoing changing tastes and expectations of their customers.

4. Times have changed With each wave of a new generation comes a new group of expectations, priorities and beliefs. What was hip ten or 15 years ago may be seen as tired and unexciting today.

Effective branding creates ‘brand equity’ which in turn increases the amount your customers are prepared to pay for your product or service. In the long term, this creates a more valuable company.

Typically, rebranding involves the following key areas: 1. Brand identity: changes can be a simple refresh of your existing visual identity or the development of a complete new logo.

REASONS WHY YOU MAY NEED TO REBRAND 1. Your current brand doesn’t truly portray your business Establishing a new business involves a myriad of expenses and the creation of a new logo is often seen as a luxury spend. A strong, professional and memorable brand will give you a competitive edge and help you stand out in the marketplace.

2. Brand strategy: if you don’t already have a brand strategy in place, this should be your primary objective as it forms the cornerstone of establishing who you are, what you stand for, what you offer and promise, and how you intend to disseminate this to the market place.

2. Your products or services have changed If your business has expanded and now offers new products or services, or has shifted its direction in operation, then your logo may no longer accurately promote your business.

5. Business merge or split When businesses merge, the underlying core operational structure, beliefs, products and services of the involved parties must strategically merge together in order to communicate a united front to the marketplace. Jumping in the deep end The process of rebranding may at first seem complex and daunting, however the rewards of undertaking this exercise far outweigh any initial doubts. Positive outcomes for your business can provide you with a greater competitive edge, increase in market share, improved and reinvigorated customer relations, happier staff and opportunities for long term market expansion. If any of these scenarios ring true with you, then maybe it is time you considered rebranding.

BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT STRATEGIES with Kylie Anderson

HELPING YOU MOVE YOUR BUSINESS FROM GOOD TO GREAT! We have all heard the saying, ‘If you don’t know where you are going, how are you going to get there?’ and the same is also true for business. Having a clear direction, a map and a plan is paramount in moving your business forward to achieve whatever it is you dream of. So why do so few small to medium enterprises engage in dedicated strategising for their business? I believe there are two main reasons: the first, lack of time and/or available staff. The second, often business owners feel the future is an uncertain

and unpredictable quality, and may lack the specialised skills and/or knowledge about how to proceed with the process.

up-to-minute financial information to show exactly how your business is performing, to assist in predicting the future.

Here are five steps to help you along the way.

Analysis of the Business Environment This needs to take into account external and internal analysis, core business and staff competencies, competitive advantage along with traditional SWOT analysis.

Vision Statement Meant for the external audience, this paints a picture that is reflective of the organisation and gives confidence to those who deal with it. Mission Statement Encompasses the organisation’s values and helps to provide strategic direction to those within the business. The emphasis for both of these vital statements is on culture, culture, culture. This is another area that many business owners leave to foster itself and then wonder why their business doesn’t reflect their own values. Goal Setting It’s important to determine what your business’s key performance indicators (KPIs) are, and then measure them regularly! In this information age, there is no excuse for not reviewing and measuring KPIs at least monthly, using

Risk Assessment Once risks are identified, strategies can be implemented to minimise them and the affect they have on your business, and therefore your life. Having a clear direction – that the whole team is a part of – will ensure that you, as the owner, are able to leave the business for extended lengths of time to focus on yourself. To celebrate and relax wherever/however you choose, stress-free, knowing your business will continue to thrive without your presence.

BUSINESS WAKE UP

What you think determines your instant emotion which creates a reaction. Become aware of what you tell yourself about someone, a situation or an experience - it transforms your physiology. What are you telling yourself about the upcoming Christmas celebrations?

find other things to do that recognise the small steps you have taken.

with Amanda Gore

WAKE UP TO THE THINGS YOUR BRAIN LOVES If you read my column on a regular basis you’ll know that I talk a lot about FARC-ing, which is the scientific formula for change. Seriously, it stands for focus, awareness, repetition and celebration! Celebrate any small changes you make as it helps new behaviour become hard wired into your brain’s neurology. It’s the silly season so maybe limit your alcohol a little with celebration and

We hardly ever do ‘big bang’ changes in life unless we are forced to. It’s usually more successful to have a kaizen approach: small, gradual and consistent. So celebrating those small steps is a really important thing to do – and your brain loves it!

Make this year a real celebration and choose your thoughts wisely. Tell yourself a different story. Be a good finder – find good in everyone and think only kind thoughts. It’s not as easy as it sounds!

The other thing your brain loves is to relax. Our ability to be in a relaxed but focused state is called flow and there are books written on how much our performance improves when we are in flow.

So happy Christmas – by choice. Relax, celebrate and give your brain a great time. WAKE UP AND WIN Think only kind thoughts this silly season – kind and positive. It’s a choice and it will transform your holiday season! Happy Christmas!

How relaxed are you during this hectic and crazy Christmas period? It’s really up to you and your thinking. The only things that cause direct stress on our bodies are extreme weather conditions or famine or a lack of water. The rest of the physiological symptoms we describe as stress are caused by – wait for it – us and our thoughts!

BUSINESS MENTORING NOOSA Founded in late 2011, Business Mentoring Noosa (BMN) has mentored over 100 small businesses across the Sunshine Coast. BMN is comprised of volunteer mentors who are retired or semi-retired business leaders from a wide range of industries. Mentors have a wealth of knowledge across all business disciplines.

Key benefits are that the program enables you to step out of the day to day and take an objective look at your business, the space to brainstorm ideas and plan for the future, and access to an independent sounding board.

BMN are affiliated with the Chambers of Commerce and Industry Queensland, Noosa. For more details visit our website www.bmn.org.au or phone (07) 3173 1849.

The mentoring process primarily acts as a sounding board, identifying and discussing your particular business problems and helping you to solve issues and predict future business trends and opportunities. The most common areas that mentees need assistance with tend to be strategy formulation, marketing, sales, finance, administration and IT.

Who is The White Plan? The White Plan is a strategic advice provider to businesses going through rapid growth and/or requiring an exit strategy. The White Plan sources and project manages the right team of business professionals to achieve the client’s business goals. What does The White Plan do? By ‘unpacking’ a business through The White Plan process we can identify what is really going on in the business’s current ‘state of play’. Once a business can identify what is actually happening it can then plan properly. The White Plan 90 Day Action Plan is developed for the business, and the correct team of business professionals appointed to deliver the outcomes the business owners want to achieve. An ongoing Strategic Business Development Plan is implemented once the initial ‘to do’ task list in the 90 Day Action Plan is completed by the recommended team of business professionals. The White Plan’s point of difference is that we personally implement and manage our report recommendations and source the right professionals who best match our client’s needs. It can sound like a lot of theory, however the difference in what we do at The White Plan is to apply a bit of ‘uncommon common sense’ to a business whilst making sure what we are hoping to achieve genuinely fulfils the business owner’s personal and professional aspirations. From time to time it can involve a bit of tough talking but sometimes we all need that as part of the journey to get to where we want to go. The White Plan looks forward to sharing in Business Matters the progress of Sunshine Coast businesses we are working with. We are proud to introduce Gerry and Donna Morris of Hot Business Events, who have made some gutsy business decisions in the past six months and are a pleasure to work with.

Aim: To transition from a speakers bureau franchisee to their own events company. The White Plan 90 Day Action Plan: Structure and Strategy The White Plan team of professionals: Specialist Franchise Law Legal Practitioner Business Insurance Specialist Personal Risk Insurance Specialist Business Banking Specialist Online and Digital Marketing Specialists Branding and Communication Marketing Specialists Liaison with client’s existing Accountant and Bookkeeper Outcomes achieved: Successful sale of the client’s existing franchise business. Implementation of new business structure that provides the client with comprehensive personal and business asset protection and the correct platform for future business growth. Brand development and 12-month marketing strategy for the new events company. Implementation of complete ‘back end’ event management systems and processes supported by their new online website, ticketing and payment platform. These systems integrated with the business’s new business banking solutions and existing bookkeeper’s processes. Next goal: Scalable and Saleable The ultimate goal for Gerry and Donna is for Hot Business Events to become a business model that can be expanded to allow them to regularly travel overseas. Five Ways to Avoid Burnout: 1. Pay attention to beginnings and endings. Be self-aware in the moment, and fully connect to each experience with gratitude. Whether it’s the beginning or ending of a project, or saying “hello” or “goodbye” to a friend BE THERE.Stop and smell the roses.

I’ve been working with high performing business owners for years, and it’s a common theme that they overwork themselves to the point of exhaustion, always chasing the next goal and forgetting to celebrate the successes they have achieved. This is the pattern of the overachiever. The positives of this pattern are that they are ambitious and driven, always striving for success. The negatives are that they do not take time to rest, can neglect their health, often running on adrenaline, and do not focus enough energy on their personal relationships. This leads to exhaustion and frustration.

2. Take time each day to be still and conduct a full body scan. You can achieve this by sitting in a chair, breathing deeply and relaxing all of your muscles from your feet, into your legs, your lower back, shoulders, neck and head. Notice where you’re holding tension. Adjust your posture and relax. 3. Eat healthy and nutritious food, and take supplements where required.

5. Surround yourself with friends that are happy to celebrate your victories with you. Take regular breaks and holidays, remembering that a rested field produces the best crop.
