TOP10 optimise your business ways to use online tools to

by Steve Goodman Looking at the calendar, it’s hard to believe we are almost 15 years into the 21st Century. So, there is no point in discussing ‘why you need a website’. If you do not already have one, then you are likely not in business, or have one of the rare businesses that would not benefit at all from an online presence, although I must admit, at this point I am hard pressed to think of one! So, if having a website is a given nowadays, it is time to start thinking beyond your website, and look at how to use the entire infrastructure of the internet and the various online tools it provides, to support and improve your business.

1

Google

Google is the gorilla in the room of online tools. It’s hard to pin Google down as just one tool; there are so many Google apps that can be used to help your business. Start with Google Analytics, Google’s easy-touse statistics tool. It gives detailed demographics including where your site has been viewed worldwide and which traffic drivers are working better than others. Statistics are broken down by day, week or month, all with

6 ISSUE 60

easy-to-read charts that even the least tech savvy user can benefit from. Then there are Google Ads, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Google+, Google Moderator, and many more.

2Amazon

Amazon is the other big name in

online tools. Amazon has done all the work for you if you want to become on online ‘e-tailer’, or if you want to expand your online sales channel beyond your own ecommerce website. Take advantage of Amazon Webstore, Amazon Payments, Amazon Product Ads, and Fulfilment by Amazon, to help make your business bigger and better with very little effort on your part.

4Online payment services

Offering multiple payment methods is a sure-fire way to improve business, and many online payments services are available that can help even the smallest businesses take advantage of merchant services such as accepting credit cards, cheques, and international drafts, without the associated cost of banks providing these services. PayPal is probably the best known, but there is also WooCommerce, ACH Payments, and several others. Mobile card readers that attach to smartphones, such as Square, which allow you to take credit card payments anywhere, are gaining in popularity, especially if you sell outside your brick and mortar store such as at street fairs, festivals etc.

your 3Cloud computing and SaaS 5Streamline social media You’ve no doubt heard of ‘the cloud’

and if you have not yet migrated to it,

it’s past time you should. Small business owners are realising the extraordinary advantages of using it for essential processes, such as storing data and maintaining the necessary hardware to do so, remotely. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solutions are a key way to reduce costs, improve efficiency and help to take your business to the next level.

You’ve realised the importance of social media, but keeping up with all the posts between Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ accounts can be ridiculously time consuming. Wouldn’t it be great if someone came up with a way to publish across all platforms at once, or even write posts in advance and schedule them for distribution? Someone has, it’s called Buffer. Buffer lets you plug photos, videos, or any other social media

equipped to take on challenges in the workplace,” said Professor Clements.

The Sunshine Coast will host its first ever Startup Weekend this May, an international event that brings together entrepreneurs, designers, developers and startup enthusiasts to participate in 54 hours of taking innovative business ideas from concept to launch. Whether you have a business idea or a skill that is necessary in building a successful new business, this event is one that aspiring entrepreneurs should not miss. Around one in three businesses created by the teams during the Startup Weekend have life beyond the event, according to Startup Weekend headquarters in California. On Friday night, attendees will pitch their ideas to the group and select members to form their teams. The rest of the weekend will be spent developing the ideas into businesses – business model creation, coding, designing and market validation – with the help of mentors and seasoned startup entrepreneurs. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback and the chance to the grand prize. Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast and the University of the Sunshine Coast’s School of Business, the organisers of the Sunshine Coast’s first Startup Weekend, have been working behind the scenes to ensure this event provides both the inspiration and the resources required for building and launching companies. Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast CEO Mr Mark Paddenburg said the future of the region dependedon our ability to nurture, create and support the next generation of entrepreneurs and this event would act as a catalyst in that process. “Startup Weekends put people with great business ideas together with teams of people who can bring them to life,” said Mr Paddenburg. 8 ISSUE 60

“We’ve decided to bring the Startup Weekend model to the Sunshine Coast after seeing the success the model has had in creating new, sustainable businesses for other local regions.” Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the StartupWeekend concept exemplified the essence of new thinking around the Coast economy, as identified in the Regional Economic Development Strategy. “I strongly support all efforts to advance our new economy and council is proud to be a sponsor of this type of initiative,” he said. Professor Mike Clements, Head of USC’s School of Business, said this exciting and entrepreneurial business experience linkedthe School of Business with the Innovation Centre in a dynamic and action-oriented manner. “Ventures such as theStartup Weekend provide fantastic mentoring opportunities for our students who are dynamic and keen to make the most of the study experience at University. It’s part of our ethos at the School of Business to promote entrepreneurial thinking and to take on challenging business opportunities. We teach, develop and mentor our students to prepare them to move into their career with an assurance and belief that they are well

Startup Weekend Sunshine Coast will be held on the University of the Sunshine Coast campus from 5.30pm Friday 2 May to 9pm Sunday 4 May 2014. The event is sponsored locally by Sunshine Coast Council and Regional Development Australia Sunshine Coast, and globally by Google for Entrepreneurs, Coca-Cola, .CO and Amazon Web Services.

Website Success…

by Paul Barrs There are hundreds of online tools that you can access for free or low cost, that will help you to improve your online business. Whether it is website plug-ins, social media options or email marketing strategies, it seems these days that every seminar we go to, every person we speak to has a list of ‘must have’ tools. However when it comes down to it, there is only one tool that you absolutely must have to help you improve your online business and your website’s success. It is analytics. Measuring and monitoring your analytics is a vital part of any business, not just online but offline also. When it comes to online applications there are many, but I choose and recommend Google Analytics. Here’s a short list of five things you must understand in order to get the most out of Google Analytics. Before you begin, however, it is important that you set up your goals and link your account with Google Webmaster Tools and Google AdWords (if you’re using PC). Once these things are done, you’re ready to get started. Number one, you must understand where your traffic comes from. Does it come through social media? Which network? Is it from a search engine? Which search engine? Maybe 10 ISSUE 60

The Number One Thing!

it’s referral traffic… if so, is it a private website or a public directory? Once you know where is your traffic is coming from, you can begin to dig a little deeper. Look at where it comes from in terms of which page, which ad or which link. The further you can dig down into understanding where your traffic comes from, the closer you come to getting a higher return on investment for your time or money spent. The second thing you must understand is where your traffic goes. What content do they view on your website? What pages, what blog posts? Do you have featured articles that cover rich, in-depth content on particular topics? Do you have numerous blog posts across a wide range of categories? Do you have a good archival system? Do you have conversion pages? Do you ask people to do something, a call to action, at the end of your primary pages? These are good things to know from a conversion point of view. The third thing you must understand about Google Analytics is your conversion funnel. That means looking at your pages and considering things like bounce rate, time on site, time on page, number of pages viewed, whether your content is viewed by new visitors or returning

visitors. These types of metrics help you evaluate how well your content is actually converting your browsers into buyers. If your analytics have been set up correctly, with good goals and appropriate tracking, you can discover what part of the buying process may be letting you down. Imagine that you have a good content page which has a good call to action and people are landing on it and then bouncing straight back out again. This is a good indication that either the content isn’t suitable or the traffic isn’t suitable. By understanding your conversion funnel, you can go back to your traffic sources or you can go back to your content to find where the problem is. If you’ve set your goals up correctly it will show you step one, step two, step three. Fourthly, it’s important that you understand how to improve your return on investment, and with this I’m talking about your investment of time OR money. Everything is a balance. If you have the time but not the money, you must learn to do these things yourself. If you have the money and don’t want to invest the time, you can get others to do it. Sometimes it’s a little of both. But when you look at the time or money you spend on your site as a ratio, compared to your conversions (by analysing your funnel and looking at where your

feature

traffic goes and where it comes from) you can also look to improve things by smaller changes that are more measureable. You might change a title, change an image, or change the colour of a form submission button. If your content is good and your traffic is good, these are the things that need testing next, and one by one, the numbers will show you what works and what doesn’t.

IT’S MY BUSINESS TO SELL YOURS.

Lastly, you must understand your conversion rights and their source of conversion. This brings together everything we’ve spoken about. Knowing where people come from and where they go, and then whether or not they convert, is the essential element in the success of any business. Google Analytics helps me measure every metric I need, to make better decisions with my online investments of time OR money. It can link in with my AdWords spend, and same again with any metrics for time that I might spend on social media. It’s vital that I understand what return I get for what I spend. It’s vital that you understand this too. These five things together make up the absolute basic essentials of profitable analytics. If you need help, there are programs or people out there who can help you learn to do this, or do it for you. However you do it though, you MUST do it... Why not give me a call?

ROD’S TOP TIP FOR SELLING YOUR BUSINESS. PREPARE FOR THE UNEXPECTED. “A large percentage of business owners are forced to sell when they are not prepared to. Unexpected scenarios such as accidents, illness, divorce, partnership issues and loss of major clientele/suppliers are seldom predicted and most often a forced sale will equate to a poor result. As they say in Scouts – Be Prepared!”

MAYORAL BUSINESS with Mark Jamieson

The last few years have seen an explosion in social media and its everincreasing forms, from Facebook to Twitter to Instagram, Tumblr and more. And any business which continues to ignore the phenomenon does so at its own peril. Council is well aware of how important it is to ensure it maintains contact with the community at all levels, including online. At present, we are continuing to develop our own ‘Council TV’ service which, along with our Facebook pages and my Twitter account, among others, will soon be

joined by our online News Centre. This will bring all the latest news from council to you in daily-updated multimedia form: text, images and video. Once upon a time, we relied upon our website, a quarterly publication to all addresses, and a monthly column in local newspapers to inform the community of what we were doing. However new generations are intent on getting their news through other means, with social media beginning to overtake traditional media platforms. The benefits to using social media for council include being able to get information to the community quickly and in user-friendly ways. As a former newspaper executive, I am well aware that, while the mainstream media is undergoing massive upheaval as delivery methods change, there will always be the need for enquiring journalists who can write compelling pieces which analyse and critique all the things being done by government, business and our institutions. Indeed, council itself can only benefit from proper scrutiny, and our region and our nation will be worse for not having effective media.

In time, a new mainstream media industry will rise phoenix-like from the ashes of the old, once the concept of ‘free’ media is sorted out. Then the media, an important part of our society – the fourth estate – will again function with some assurance of fiscal certainty. In the meantime, organisations as diverse as businesses, governments and institutions have started to deliver their own media. For our part, we will continue to strive to bring news of events, developments, community activities, new initiatives and celebrations from across our region to our online news outlets. I encourage you to visit council’s website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, our business portal www.business.sunshinecoast.qld.gov. au, our Facebook site www.facebook.com/ SunshineCoastCouncil and follow me on Facebook www.facebook.com/mark.jamieson, Twitter (www.twitter.com/JamiesonMark) or Tumblr www.sunnycoastmayor.tumblr.com. Keep in touch with us through any of these and you will soon hear about the launch of our News Centre.

Mr Dickson recently awarded 20 IRT The Palms community members with Australia Day Medallions and works closely with IRT to help us provide quality aged care services on the Sunshine Coast. Dr Redknap, who was named Queensland’s 2013 Retirement Village Manager of the Year by the Retirement Living Council of Australia, was delighted to attend the morning tea with her local Member of Parliament.

Are you looking for hassle free staffing? “When you’re in a start-up, the first ten people will determine whether the company succeeds or not. Each is ten percent of the company. So why wouldn’t you take as much time as necessary to find all the A players? If three were not so great, why would you want a company where 30 per cent of your people are not so great? A small company depends on great people much more than a big company does.” Steve Jobs EastCoast has been proudly providing dedicated service to the local business community for 28 years, as well as nationally and even more recently internationally. USING EMAIL MARKETING TO OPTIMISE YOUR ONLINE ROI You’re online but so are your competitors. Other services and other products are also vying for the attention of your customers and prospects. In the age of ‘now’, one way you can stand out from the crowd is to create personalised real-time experiences for your customers. Modern day consumers want experiences that can help them immediately or provide a fulfilling interaction. One way to maximise your online marketing effectiveness and provide a personalised experience is to use email marketing. With little investment in time or money, email is by far the most effective way of directly affecting your bottom line and actually growing your business. Ensure copy and design elements communicate The layout of your email marketing directs your audience’s eyes to specific content. Use visual anchors to draw readers’ attention to your content. The variety of visual anchors you can use is limited only by your creativity and the layout of your email template.

TIP: Consider using a reputable design studio to get you started. There are four important elements in an electronic direct mail: 1. The graphics (carrier) which must be opened by the reader - ‘What does it look like?’ 2. The offer: the way the proposition is phrased - ‘What’s the deal?’ or ‘What’s in it for me?’ 3. The copy: the compelling description that gets the reader to buy or act - ‘How is it said?’ 4. The list: the targeted audience most likely willing to buy or act - ‘Who is it sent to?’ TIP: It pays to test how design and copy changes can improve clicks and conversions. I know so many people who have done it, absolutely love it, and seem to go back year after year. I’ve been camping a few times, and have loved it, but it is such hard work getting organised. I guess I am more of a hotel type girl really. Beach Road Holiday Homes suit perfectly. Fringed by native bushland, unspoilt beaches and pristine waterways, and situated at the gateway of the Cooloola-Great Sandy National Park, Beach Road Holiday Homes allow you to get back to nature without sacrificing five star accommodation. Their luxury, architect designed and eco-inspired homes sleep from two to ten guests. The homes offer an unparalleled opportunity to relax, rejuvenate and enjoy in an idyllic setting. What a fabulous place to reconnect with family or friends, relax and enjoy good food and wine. Spend time with the kids, explore the surrounding bushland, or for the more energetic, enjoy a game of tennis.

treasure uncovered

Beach Road Holiday Homes is the perfect family and friends reunion venue, with all the facilities to make it a memorable occasion. One of the things we loved the most was that with three different couples we could be together but do our own thing without stepping on each other’s toes. It was difficult to believe that we were not even an hour from home. We cooked and ate in on the first night, using the beautiful BBQ and eating area on the screened in deck. On the second night we walked just over the road to eat at the Great Sandy Bar and Restaurant, which was great food, great service and a great friendly vibe. Beach Road also offers a unique opportunity for a nature based holiday! It’s the perfect location to use as a stepping-stone to take your 4WD off the bitumen and onto the beach. We drove along the beach, which being my first time I have to admit was a little exhilarating, we stopped along the way for a picnic lunch, on a picnic table right by the water, where we were visited by not one but two crocodiles, (OK goannas but they were huge). We

then continued the drive right up to Still Water and just plonked ourselves in the beautiful blue water with a glass of wine (and a beer for the boys), it was simply heaven on earth, and I could not believe that I have lived here nearly five years and haven’t been before. Replace boutique shops and coffee shops or bars with tall trees standing proud around your home and natural bushland providing the habitat to a wealth of wildlife. Kangaroos can usually be seen in the early morning and evening around the houses and you are sure to spot a blue tongue lizard or an iguana on your way to and from the leisure centre. Just across the road from the houses is the pub and conference centre, where many couples choose to have their wedding. They quite often choose Beach Road Holiday Houses to get ready and to accommodate all the family and guests. If you can’t come to Noosa without a trip to your favourite restaurant, or you need to hit the shops, do not panic! Noosa’s iconic Hastings Street is only 20 minutes away and even less to Gympie Terrace on the beautiful Noosa River.

Onsite Managers Donna and Paul Stewart are amazing, they just love catering for corporate groups. We are planning our next Mindsight Magic weekend getaway there in June. They are so flexible with customising for whatever your groups needs are. So if you’re looking for a business event location with a difference, Beach Road Holiday Homes is definitely the place. It will leave your staff recharged, refreshed and in the right frame of mind. The experienced staff will tailor-make meetings, workshops, exhibitions and training seminars to your needs and can host small executive meetings, surrounded by nature.

How cool would it be to take the whole team for some team-building fun, utilising the pool, tennis courts, leisure centre and even the outdoor adventure circuit just across the road at Total Adventures. What a great way to get your team really connected! Before you leave don’t forget to pop over the road on your way out to clean the underneath of your car, just $15, we thought that was great value and the team there were really friendly too. Beach Road Holiday Homes is a multi-purpose facility that can cater for everyone’s needs and is truly a hidden treasure that will leave you wanting to go back time and time again.

Hi Jeff, I wanted to let you know about how pleased I am with the success of the Reputation Marketing Strategies we have implemented for our business. What has now become apparent to me is the high importance consumers place on what is written about a business on the internet. I believe it has more value than a direct referral. Everyday new customers walk in and say, “I came here because I saw your reviews!” Reputation Marketing works. Kind Regards, Mike Ryan

5 reasons why property is a smart investment in 2014 01

safe as houses

There is a reason why “safe as houses” is a well-known saying: it’s true. According to research by AMP, Australian property has increased in value at a rate comparable to that of the share market since 1926 – an average of 11.4 per cent per annum, despite a succession of wars, disasters, recessions and crises. More importantly, it has done so without the volatility of the share market too. It’s a bricks and mortar investment, something you can touch and feel that can’t disappear.

02

tax breaks

There are huge benefits to having a tenant and the tax man pay off your investments for you. In some cases, even the most conservative property can turn into a cash flow positive wonder after tax breaks. Let’s look at a few. depreciation One of the most underrated and overlooked tax benefits is depreciation. This works best when you buy or build a brand new property. Depreciation on a $500,000 property can vary between $10,000 and $25,000 per annum tax deduction, depending on the quality of fixtures and fittings. This costs you nothing and is like a gift from the government. It certainly makes the choice of buying new versus old almost obsolete. New usually wins hands-down! cLaimabLe expenses

03

seCure growing inCome in retirement

Moving on from super to retirement, the biggest positive about investment property is that it continues to grow; therefore your income in retirement will grow. Most investments start to retract when you retire and start to live off the proceeds. With properties increasing in value, so does the rent, leading to long-term increasing income in retirement. The kids don’t miss out either. Property forms a huge wealth handover in estate planning. Property enables you to live well in retirement and still provide an estate for the security of your loved ones. All in all, property is one of the biggest wealth creators in Australia.

04

you Can use leverage

Using other people’s money to make you money is one of the biggest benefits of investing in property. Banks will lend up to 90 per cent of the value of a property, which means a $50,000 investment can change into a $500,000 investment. The great part of this is you will earn, in the above example, 11.4 per cent on the whole amount. For example: Eg $50,000 x 11.4 per cent = $5,700 $500,000 x 11.4 per cent =$57,000

05

property is flexible – investment styles

Using the right accountant can make a difference too. There are a number of things that could be claimed that are often overlooked, including stationery and computers to travel. It’s worth taking stock of Property is a remarkably flexible investment. No matter what your financial what is being claimed on your tax now – review this with your accountant aims are, you should be able to find an investment strategy to suit your to make sure you aren’t missing anything. needs. For example: negative gearing

Long-term capitaL growth

Another gift from the government is the fact that if your investment is making a loss instead of a profit, the loss is considered tax deductible. That means if you are on 30 cents in the dollar you will get back 30 cents on every dollar you have paid tax on. It is important to note that negative gearing and the subsequent tax deduction should be considered a bonus, not the purpose of the investment, for two reasons. The first reason is that it isn’t worth throwing away $1 to get the 30 cents back. The second is that the government can change the rules at any time. So while you are building a property portfolio, treat the tax effectiveness as a bonus and always buy the best investment with the best growth potential, rather than trying to maximise tax benefits.

If you have time, it is the best way to build a retirement nest egg. Property has historically proven to deliver capital gain. Choosing the right area at the right time, with the right supply and demand ratio and demographics, can magnify your results. This forms an important part of property research.

superannuation Self-managed super funds (SMSF) are becoming very popular. More and more people are taking control of their own superannuation because it gives them the ability not only to get more involved with their own investment choices, but also to invest in property due to the changes in legislation regarding borrowing within super. Until this option became available, most were stuck within the confines of managed funds and corporate super.

positive cash fLow By choosing properties where rents outweigh holding costs, you will have the ability to ‘hold’ more properties in your portfolio. However, this sometimes comes at the cost of higher risk and the possibility of volatility. It is important to look at all aspects of the investment and have plans in place to mitigate those risks should something change. adding vaLue There are many ways of adding value to a property to increase equity, therefore increasing the opportunity of buying more. Renovating, subdividing and changing the use of a property are just a few ways to do this. A word of caution – it is vital to do a feasibility study before buying the property. It is amazing how much these things actually cost, and often the sound of it is much better than the actual financial result.

Top 5 things to ask your mortgage broker You have found the property of your dreams, and it is now time to find the finance to fund your new purchase. When looking for a property loan to meet your financial needs, it’s important to consider a range of aspects. While it is important to take the interest rate into account, borrowers are also encouraged to think about the other aspects of acquiring a home loan that can impact the overall cost and length of time it takes to repay the debt, such as approval times, flexibility, features and extra costs. Here are five key questions that borrowers should ask their mortgage broker when applying for a home loan.

1

of extra repayments you can make without charge, and how such repayments can be made – via a branch, internet banking, over the phone, etc.

Does my loan have an offset account and how can I use it to the best of my ability? Loans with 100%

off-set accounts enable borrowers to link a savings account with their home loan account and ‘off-set’ that amount to reduce the interest accumulated on their loan. This is a great way for borrowers to stay in the green with their home loan repayments.

You will often hear the term ‘the bottom line’ used to describe a final position or ultimate truth.

Bottom Line Control

To a business owner their bottom line is generally; how much money have we made or lost, how much tax do we owe, what’s our business worth and how much can we borrow? Malcolm Chilman started up the accounting firm Bottom Line Control in 2002 to give business owners exactly that information. Malcolm believes it’s important that business owners have meaningful and up to date financial information to help them manage their businesses, and that information is provided in the most efficient manner. He started using Xero for his own accounting back in 2010, and is now an advocate, actively converting others to cloud accounting. He had the following to say about the virtues of Xero.

my iPad, which take me a few minutes each week. I’m a total Xero convert.

hasn’t evolved one bit since I started using it more than a decade ago.

Like all accounting software if Xero isn’t set up and used properly it can be a major headache, “Rubbish in, rubbish out”. It is so important to use the bank feeds, pay suppliers by BATCH PAYMENTS, send out invoices and statements by email, and keep the CONTACTS up to date. If used correctly, Xero is extremely efficient. I’d suggest it could even reverse the trend of outsourcing bookkeeping to overseas firms who have low labour costs. That’s not increased productivity, but merely cheaper labour. Efficient automated accounting software will negate the need to outsource offshore.

On the downside, Xero is totally reliant on the internet, it can still run on marginal internet connections, but this may frustrate some users. We also have to put a lot of faith in our provider when it comes to security and data backups. However, that also means we don’t have to perform back ups or tedious upgrades which are an enormous time waster.

“It took a bit of getting used to after so many years of using MYOB and Quickbooks. It’s another way of thinking about bookkeeping, but after I got the hang of its automation features I’ve never looked back. I still do all my own bank reconciliation and bookkeeping on

Xero will release their taxation module over the next three months, and once it’s proven to be reliable, I’ll be switching over all my Practice Management software to Xero. I’m anticipating tremendous productivity gains over my current software, which frankly,

For the business owner, changing accounting software can be a daunting task, and needs an open mind to embrace the new paradigm and reap its efficiencies. It’s quite easy to convert MYOB or Quickbooks to Xero if you’re handy with CSV files, alternatively there are a multitude of providers who can convert your data at a reasonable cost”. Malcolm is happy to offer any Business Matters Reader a free consultation about converting to Xero or changing accountants, give him a call on 5471 7077.

Benefits of online training and learning With the rising transportation and infrastructure costs, the government and private enterprise are all recognising the enormous benefits of online training and learning.

IS YOUR BUSINESS ELIGIBLE FOR FUNDING?

1. Convenience – students can access training when they are ready and in their own time, in comfort and where they choose. You don’t have to worry how people will get to or from the event. 2. Immediate and cost-effective – no rooms to hire or transport to catch, the training is immediate and online. It is more affordable for the client and cost-effective to run. 3. Easy – no dressing up or being outside your comfort zone. Lots of bells and whistles throughout the programs. Discussion time is available. 4. Good return on investment – anyone around the world can access your training at any time of the day or night. Because the internet is global, there is a much larger market from which to attract interested participants to your online presentation. Exposure to your products is much greater. Benefits of face-to-face training With increasing emphasis on the use of e-learning, I am still a big advocate for face-to-face instructor-led training. 1. Focus – The participants have fewer distractions. Phones are off and they are ready to train. 2. Workshopping and learning from other participants – during the class, everyone has the opportunity to share their knowledge and ask questions. This experience cannot be duplicated with e-learning. While there are online discussion groups, they cannot match the experience of interacting face to face. There is a level of confidentiality - what happens in the classroom stays in the classroom. 3. Problem solving – a good facilitator will follow the lead of the class and help them find ways to solve problems. With e-learning, there is little adaptability to address this type of issue. If one or more participants have specific problems, the facilitator can catch up with them in the breaks. 4. Networking and building personal relationships – at every face-toface course, participants network with each other individually or as a team and build better relationships. These relationships can lead to referrals, job offers, increasing profits, even marriages! The benefits in building these relationships way outstrip the cost of hiring a training room. 5. Breaking down barriers – bringing in all team members to meet and share can help solve problems incredibly quickly, compared to training individually online.

There is no doubt e-learning can be an effective training method for some topics but do not overlook the many unique benefits of bringing people together to learn from each other in a face to face setting, especially with sales, service, leadership and people skills. The choice is yours. Happy learning :)

PREVENTING WORKPLACE CONFLICT AND LEGAL ISSUES IN THE WORKPLACE

My experience with organisational leadership began as an Occupational Therapist case managing people who had workplace injuries (both physical and mental health issues). Many of these clients were slow to heal and had a complicated return to work. The statistical evidence and my personal observation showed that there were four key factors in the speed of healing and return to work after injury. Firstly, what mattered was how the worker had been treated once they had injury. This was a key driver in whether the injured worker would sue their employer or not. Secondly, what impacted was whether the worker enjoyed their job and was positively engaged in the workplace culture. Thirdly, I observed slower return to work when there was were cultural attitudes of entitlement and an ‘us vs them’ mentality between management and the employees. Fourthly, early intervention and good treatment by external providers played an important part in return to work outcomes, (which was where I came in).

Our purpose wakes our soul from its sleep, our vision motivates us and our goals and actions pave the way to our dreams. Leigh Rorke

How an employee interprets an experience of ‘harassment’, ‘bullying’ or workplace injury greatly depends on their relationship with their workplace, and their own personal empowerment and communication skills.

It was a frustrating job. And the reason was that I only had control of one of those factors (the treatment) but no control over the culture of the organisation. As a leadership coach, I now work with leaders who have direct control over the culture and treatment of employees in the workplace. There is so much that management can do to create a culture that safeguards against workplace conflict and legal issues. It requires a three-pronged approach. 1. Make people your top Key Performance Indicator. Because profit and performance follows a focus on happy workers. Your leadership team need to be effective communicators with high emotional intelligence. Invest in leadership coaching when required. 2. Assist your employees to take responsibility by educating them on communication, positive psychology and positive focus. At Lead on Purpose we run training to educate employees on techniques for stress, positive focus and communication. These skills increase productivity, attendance and make all the difference in whether an event such as an inappropriate comment, or injury becomes a life shattering experience or just something to be dealt with through appropriate channels of communication. 3. Deal with issues fairly. Employees talk. Seek to listen, support and put in place systems that manage workplace challenges in a systemic way. If you are not sure of your legal obligations, seek the advice of an employment law specialist. It’s better to spend money preventively than pay costly court fees if an employee sues. If you’re concerned about the possible impact of conflict, injury and legal issues on your organisation, the great news is that the culture, leadership and workplace systems are the key drivers in the outcome. These are all changeable factors. Communicate that you care to your employees, and engage them in developing the type of workplace where you all want to spend time.

CAN YOUR TEAM USE THE TOOLS? I am the first to admit I am not an expert in online success tools. However, I acknowledge there are many successful online tools that enhance business activity across many operational areas, often having a direct impact on sales. While this online world continues to accelerate and expand opportunities to grow our businesses, for many of the clients we support, it also brings a number of HR matters into the spotlight. The growth of online tools for businesses leaves many organisations grappling with how to maximise success from these tools, while also minimising the distraction and even frustration they can cause in the workplace.

Next HRM Event Performance Review Preparation

Embracing online tools can be an effective strategy for business efficiency and growth, however if your workforce are not all IT savvy, this can prove challenging. Even in a workplace where everyone is embracing the use of online tools, this can also introduce the question of business versus personal use, and the boundaries for ensuring these tools are used for their intended purpose and are not a distraction for staff to engage in non-work related activity. While we embrace developing our business online, we also need to manage the introduction of new business tools with effective change management. When implementing these new tools, consider the following to improve the success rate on implementation: Have you assessed the skills and capability of your employees to use the tools? Will they need specific training in these tools? Have you clearly outlined: How the tools are to be used? What the tools are to be used for? When the tools should be used? Where can the tools be accessed? Who will have access to these tools and who will be accountable for managing their output? We need to be passionate about successfully introducing tools that will improve our operations, by providing clarity about the purpose and use of these tools in our business. Invest in getting it right from the start and then support these tools with robust policies and procedures. Once these things are in place, it comes down to trust. We must trust our employees to embrace these tools and use them for the purpose they were intended, sometimes stepping away and seeing the results unfold, all the while knowing if any issues arise, we have the procedures in place to manage them. ONLINE SUCCESS TOOLS So you have a website… now what? You need to get potential customers to visit, engage and ultimately buy from you. Sounds simple, right? But just how do you get that allimportant traffic to your site? Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google, email marketing, YouTube… the list goes on. To make matters worse, as a business owner you are constantly being told that, if you want to succeed, you must incorporate all these elements (plus the traditional forms of marketing, such as print, radio etc) into your marketing budget. It can be difficult to decide which channel will work best for your business. Therefore, being able to measure the results and success of your campaigns is extremely beneficial. Return on Marketing Investment (ROMI) is a metric used to measure the overall effectiveness of a marketing campaign. This helps marketers make better decisions about allocating future investments. In the simplest sense, ROMI is measured by comparing revenue gains against marketing investment. Fortunately there are some fantastic tools available to help you measure the effectiveness of your online campaigns and your ROMI. In terms of marketing, the process for deciding how and where you spend your money should be a recurring cycle: 1. Determine channel

laughing matters DR PAUL DEVER | OCEAN ORTHODONTICS

SURESMILE IS ON THE CUTTING EDGE It’s always a challenge to know exactly how much impact the internet has had on a profession, until you work in that profession or are exposed to it. The internet is incorporated into all types of workplaces, even orthodontia, making once difficult processes and decisions possible with just the touch of a button. Fifteen years ago, most people had just purchased their first mobile phone, probably a Nokia with a black and green screen and the Snake game preloaded. This was the most advanced piece of technology they had ever seen. Nowadays, it’s normal for people to carry a piece of complex technology with them everywhere, whether it be a smartphone or tablet with an internet connection. If someone doesn’t know where they’re going or the answer to a question, the desired response is about 30 seconds away. A fresh piece of technology has been introduced into the field of orthodontics – SureSmile. SureSmile is at the cutting edge of digital technology. It allows for the convenience of having a patient’s records scanned into a computer and used to foresee the proposed outcome of braces before taking action. A scan is taken either in the mouth with a special scanner, or using a low-dose CT scan of the jawbones and teeth. From there, a treatment plan is developed for each patient’s case, virtually and in three dimensions. The screen then exhibits how a patient’s teeth will actually look with each proposed treatment plan. For the past 100-plus years, this has been the type of mental gymnastics an orthodontist has tried to play out in their head when planning each case. Now, orthodontists are fortunate enough to have the technology available to see how the final result will look, right in front of their eyes, before they make any irreversible decisions such as tooth extractions. The process of SureSmile speeds up the treatment time by 30 per cent, and improves the quality of treatment results. The future of digital technology that the internet can provide for personal or workplace use is astounding – how simple will everyday tasks really get? www.suresmile.com

SELLING TIPS FOR VENDORS PRESENTING YOUR HOME FOR SALE A house that ‘sparkles’ on the surface will sell faster than its shabby neighbour, even if both are structurally well maintained. From our experience, we also know that a well presented house appeals to more buyers and will sell faster, and often for a higher price. Buyers feel more comfortable purchasing a well cared for home because if what they can see is maintained, what they can’t see has probably also been maintained. Always look at your home from the buyer’s point of view. Be objective and be honest. Declutter A cluttered property will limit your chances of finding the right buyer. Clear rooms of excess items so buyers can see the room. Music Retail specialists have proven that light classical music makes buyers stay longer and spend more. Lifestyle Most buyers are looking to purchase a lifestyle. This means your own personal effects and the way your home looks to a buyer will make a significant impression. Maximise street appeal During spring and summer months, consider planting some annuals, perhaps pots near your front door. Space is important This might mean removing excess furniture from your property. A room crowded with furniture will only make it look smaller. Remember, less is more. Gardens Many buyers are looking for a garden but not a lot of work. Make sure your garden is not overgrown. A good looking, neat and tidy garden will add value. Light is essential If it doesn’t exist, look for ways to create it. Can a lamp be used to create more light? Buyers love light, so give them as much as you can.

CONFIDENCE

SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE WORKPLACE Almost all businesses have some form of social media presence. The medium provides an instantaneous means of communicating to customers on a mass basis. The medium however brings with it its own unique problems when it comes to Workplace Relations Law. The law of employment has always had to adapt to meet changes in social standards. In the late 1600s, a cudgel (club) was considered an appropriate instrument for a master to ‘correct’ the actions of a servant. Later, the law was adjusted to say, “A sword is not a proper instrument for correction and the cruelty of the cut will make a malice implied”. Employment law has moved a long way in 300 years from the administration of work practices by means of a cudgel. However, the speed at which the social media phenomenon has found its way into our lives has likely left many workplaces deficient in the consideration of the risks the medium poses. The regulation of the use of social media in the workplace should be by means of policies and the provision of training, the absence of which will cause difficulties in the employer’s ability to sanction conduct occurring either in or outside of work hours. This was evident in the breakthrough case of Linfox v Stutsel in 2011. In that case, the employer lost an unfair dismissal claim after it terminated the employment of an employee for posting comments (out of hours) about the workplace on a Facebook page. Contrast of the decision in Little v Creditcorp Group Limited trading as Creditcorp Group in 2010, where an employee had ‘joked’ in a Facebook post (out of hours) about sexually harassing a new employee. In that case, the employer had implemented a policy concerning the appropriate use of social media, which in part, enabled the employer to successfully defend an unfair dismissal claim. Another important issue which arises from the use of social media is the protection of confidential information. Many businesses seek to jealously protect information which is confidential and essential to the viability of the business; this may includeclient details. Some businesses encourage staff members to use social media sites such as LinkedIn to stay in contact with and to inform a customer base. Interesting employment law issues then arise as to the control and ownership of those connections after the employment ends. In Pedley v IPMS Pty Ltd trading as Peckvonhartein 2010, for example, an employee used his LinkedIn connections during a period of employment to solicit the employer’s client base to his new business. This issue should be addressed in employment contracts. The inappropriate use of social media can also give rise to issues concerning breach of copyright laws, discrimination, sexual harassment, bullying, defamation and brand protection. Businesses must consider the means by which these issues are to be managed.

outsourcing matters MONTY G. HOOKE | EZY VA

MAKING SENSE OF OFFSHORE OUTSOURCING SOLUTIONS We live in an era of business where we know we need to be doing more online. Social media, email marketing, online customer relationship management tools, websites for mobile platforms, AdWords, the list goes on. It can be a challenge just keeping up to date with what we need to get done, let alone actually sourcing and paying for resources that can actually implement it cost effectively. This is where offshore outsourcing platforms come into play, systems such as Elance, oDesk, Fiverr and Ezy VA. It has never been easier to get instant access to skilled workers who work for between $2 - $15 dollars an hour that you would pay $20 - $100 an hour for locally. Elance alone has more than two million contractors listed who can do anything from transcription to building apps and online marketing. In fact, there’s not much you can’t outsource overseas these days. However, as exciting as that is, there are a lot of pitfalls and problems associated with dealing with overseas workers. In fact, these pitfalls are the very reason I set up my own outsourcing solution. The success rate I had, and the general consensus amongst the thousands of business owners I have either worked with or researched, is that it is hit and miss. These are the top pitfalls to watch out for: Security issues - is my data safe? Language and cultural barriers resulting in misunderstanding - by far the number one reason why business owners give up on outsourcing It can take time to recruit - you might spend five hours choosing someone for a ten hour task You need to manage it all yourself - if you have never built an offshore team before, this can be very challenging Dealing with freelancers - they have no accountability and you have no way of managing them if they choose to bail on you. As an expert in outsourcing and setting up virtual business ecosystems, I have tried everything and seen what works for others and what does not. My general rules of thumb are: Use platforms like Elance, oDesk and Fiverr for ad-hoc tasksprojects that are non-mission-critical. Then, if it doesn’t work, it won’t affect your business revenue or customer satisfaction Building an offshore team is completely viable, but if you don’t have experience in building offshore teams then consider using a company who have people on the ground locally and their own offices offshore Beware of hiring an offshore Virtual Assistant too cheaply. The more experienced ones will cost you a few dollars more (eight to ten dollars an hour) but the level of service and experience you get will be worth the few extra dollars The reason you would outsource work is so you can costeffectively get more stuff done in your business. So make sure it’s a solution that doesn’t take up much or any of your time. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Monty G. Hooke is a ‘Serial Entrepreneur’, having had his first business at eight years old. education matters LEE BOND | SUNSHINE COAST GRAMMAR SCHOOL

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION Love them or loathe them, digital technologies are here to stay. Parents, teachers and youth professionals are all too aware of the impact technology has on kids and teenagers. We live in an era when posting photos on Instagram, updating a Facebook status or playing online games ranks much higher in the pecking order for children than doing work for school. Today’s children consume data at an astounding rate and are bombarded with pressures from a conflicting range of sources, including online ads, the gaming world, peers, parents and school. The pace of life is fast and we are seeing an increasing number of children suffering from depression and psychological issues, often as a result of the misuse of digital technology. Renowned child psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg provides a wealth of knowledge and resources for adults who have concerns about young people. Adults are finding themselves locked in a battle with their children, where computers, touch screens or mobiles are seen as the problem, and quite often, these devices become the bargaining chip. Banning the technology seems like a quick fix, but it is only a short-term, temporary solution and will not change ingrained behaviour in children, for whom using technology is like breathing. The hi-tech world is alluring for them, but you’re the parent and you have the right to put some boundaries around their online activity. Beyond that, a more intelligent approach is required to demonstrate how digital technologies can be used purposefully. The device itself isn’t the real problem, it’s the attitude of the user, their expectations and how they use the technology. Many kids view computers as toys, rather than tools, and therein lies the problem. If they have an Xbox or PlayStation, let them use that device for gaming, not the family computer. Children are able to navigate websites and social media at the speed of light, but the veneer of teenage technical skills is thin, with many unable to fully operate a word processing package or utilise a spreadsheet effectively. Google is generally the first port of call for just about any question. While Google does have a range of useful extras, children seldom go beyond the basic search engine. Wikipedia is also overused as a primary knowledge source. Although both are acceptable starting points for an educational journey, children should be encouraged to stretch their thinking, question the reliability of what they are reading and triangulate information from Google and Wikipedia with other more reliable sources. We should be encouraging our children to leverage the capabilities of computers in order to communicate effectively through their writing, accept constructive feedback and cultivate critical thinking and decision-making skills as part of the learning process. Their digital footprint will follow them into adulthood and the workplace. Most children are unaware of the harm they are doing to their own reputations by posting inappropriate images and comments without thinking about the consequences to themselves or others. There’s a lot of rubbish on the internet. Our children are authors of some of it, but if used properly, the web can really enhance learning, provide a window to the world, and help prepare our youngsters for life beyond Year 12. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Lee Bond is the eLearning Coordinator at Sunshine Coast Grammar School. As a teacher, Lee has worked in the UK, Middle East and Australia, presenting at several international IT conferences over a 20 year career. IS YOUR BUSINESS PREPARED FOR SALE? Understanding how business buyers make their final buying decision can be critical to selling your business. As the business owner, you may have a clear idea what you’re selling: the fitout, profits, systems, location, lifestyle, brand and the years of hard work building the business.

No 1 Ranking Online Retailer Home Based

What a buyer is actually buying is much simpler, and it’s often not the lifestyle or independence promoted to get their initial inquiry. The final buying decision will come down to the research process or due diligence. This is a technical, highly involved research process that, by its conclusion, has stripped away the more romantic drivers to purchase. This reduces what a business buyer is buying into its simplest form: A business buyer is predominantly buying the future maintainable profits of the business, which you can demonstrate, under predictable circumstances, can and will be sustained for the next three to five years.

Are you searching for a flexible & affordable business to restore your independence, support your lifestyle & only work 25 hours a week from home? Then here’s your chance. This booming No 1 ranking Online business has all the systems in place & is ready for you to walk in and take over. With the latest research suggesting that by the year 2016 online sales will double, that makes this business very attractive.

Bustling Supermarket in a Desirable Location

Of course, things like the fitout, lifestyle, lease and location are extremely important; however you could have one of the most wildly attractive and profitable businesses available but you won’t attract a buyer unless you can demonstrate continued future profits. Whether you’re selling today or in three years’ time, you need to prepare the business for sale. Financial and legal documents are the basis for any due diligence that a buyer might conduct. Without a solid method of verifying your profits, turnover and tenure, most serious buyers will simply walk away.

Whether you’re selling today or in three years’ time, you need to prepare the business for sale. By eliminating risks, doubts and uncertainties in your business, you will earn the buyer’s confidence and the likelihood is that they will proceed. This scenario will usually also attract a better sale price in a shorter time frame, which is the perfect scenario to sell a business.

When life rains on you,

WE HAVE YOU COVERED

WHAT WILL YOUR DEATH COVER SAY ABOUT YOU? ‘Here lies (insert name), who cared for his/ her family so deeply... but still left them in great debt.’ Will this be your headstone? This situation is not an uncommon scenario, but one that can usually be avoided. We spend so much of our time working hard to ensure our families have a good life. But have you really thought about how they would fare after your death? The deep sadness of losing a loved one cannot be prevented. But the debts and financial hardship can be very easily prevented, if action is taken in time. That is, when you’re reasonably healthy, and before a terminal illness has been diagnosed. So how do we decide on how much Life Insurance is needed to leave our families debt free and living comfortably? Below is an example of how one family decided how much to leave behind. This is one father’s cover amount choice for his Death Benefit policy. His wife’s policy is set up exactly the same way, and they are each other’s beneficiaries. I’ve left a column so you can fill in your own sums to help you work out your own needs, should you choose a similar model. Set aside funds for: Home loan pay out

$270,000

Investment property loan

$420,000

Credit cards pay out

$7,000

Car lease pay out

$21,000

Sue’s ** school costs x 5 years

$25,000

John’s **school costs x 7 years

$35,000

Place amount in bank for interest

$1,000,000

Funeral expenses

$10,000

Total Death Cover

$1,788,000

**The names have been changed. This couple have chosen to pay out their debts, include their children’s remaining school costs (at $5000/year), and set aside $1,000,000 to put in a high interest savings fund so that the remaining spouse can live off the yearly interest, if needed. The $1,000,000 is then to become a legacy payment for the children once they were of a certain age (in this case, 28 and 30). The premiums for this particular policy were put through a very good superannuation fund. This meant they don’t have to pay for this policy out of their cash flow. It is also tax deductable to his fund. The premiums are only about six per cent of their annual super contributions, so their super is still growing well.

Ask yourself... Am I sure that my Life Insurance cover would really leave my partner/family debt free? Would it be enough for my kids’ education costs to aged 18 and beyond? Do I have Trauma Cover? (This covers cancers, heart disease, strokes etc.) Would it support 100% of my expenses for 12 months if needed? Is it enough to allow my partner to stop working to be my primary carer? Did you know your Insurance can be paid for by Superannuation?

Ask yourself today, “What will my death cover say about me?”

THE POWER OF THE FREE WIDGET

JUST GETTING BY ONLINE VS A THRIVING VIRTUAL ECOSYSTEM

BUSINESS MATTERS MAGAZINE NOW HAS AN APP

It is important to be active online and keep media websites up to date. Put your name out there to attract and generate new leads. Often with websites like Facebook and LinkedIn, new leads for businesses are often coming from your friends of friends so keep active and post regular status updates and fresh pictures to help keep you in their newsfeeds.

For a successful online strategy offer a Free Widget. A widget is useful information your prospect can use to solve their problems. This can be a report, cd, dvd or book. In exchange for the widget the prospect has to give you their contact details. This is very important because once they have given you their details you can communicate and educate them, demonstrating your expertise. Follow up by using an email sequence, building trust and goodwill for future business.

Before you want a new CRM, Email Marketing, Social Media Campaign, Virtual Assistant etc, implemented, be sure to have somebody (you, an internal staff or virtual staff) assigned as a Project Leader.

Working at Business Matters Magazine as the Business Development Manager, I use quite a few online strategies. Lately I have been having quite a bit of success with LinkedIn, sending individual categories a personal message. Also looking for appointments in particular locations, so if I am heading to Noosa I will look up businesses in Noosa and try to connect with them. This has been working well. But the best new thing we can boast about at Business Matters Magazine is our new app. Download it for free. Search for Business Matters Magazine.

It is essential to revamp your website/business page every couple of months including maintaining a fresh face on your online media. This will attract new clients and most importantly help to keep these clients.

ACCELERATED

BUSINESS MARKETING More Leads, More Customers and More Profits in 12 Months or Less... Guaranteed

First identify if what you are assigning is a Project or a Process, implementing anything for better productivity should be handled as such, but especially with new online systems and marketing. Processes can easily be outsourced or trained, Projects need somebody internally to drive it to make it work. Once your new online project is implemented, it can then be handled as a process. Follow this and you will have a healthy Virtual EcoSystem that supports the growth of your business.

“We aim for the perfect balance of youth and experience. It puts our team at the cutting edge and provides a solid depth of knowledge to solve any IT issue,” said Ian, founder and Director of OJ Networks. OJ Networks are a growing IT company that has found a unique niche in the market. Their combination of IT Support for Business and Professional Web Design and Hosting allows them to provide a full complement of services to their clients. “Our clients are speaking with one voice when they say they want simplicity in their IT,” said Ian. “Who wants to wait on hold to overseas to fix an issue with their site? They simply call us and we look after them.”

The growth at OJ Networks has for the most part been organic. “Word of mouth has always played a major part in attracting new clients,” said Ian. “The trust built between OJ Networks and our clients allows our clients to be confident in recommending us. That means a lot because our clients’ business and personal relationships could be affected through their recommendations.” So what is it that makes a great IT company? “I think the most important factors would be the ability to problem solve a wide range of technical issues, implementing the latest technologies and offering traditional honest service,” replied Ian. One of the biggest issues facing Sunshine Coast businesses is that

they have no way of determining the quality of an IT company/person until they try their services. So what sets OJ Networks apart? “Our core team are Microsoft Certified Engineers which means we have put in time and money to learn the correct way to manage complex server environments. Always look for that in an IT company if you have a Microsoft network in your business,” said Ian. “You could also take the approach of due diligence as one of our recent potential clients did. They rang the companies listed as testimonials on our website and asked for a further list to call. They are now a valued client with an OJ Networks supplied hybrid cloud/in-house server solution.” If you have thought about having your IT professionally managed, OJ Networks offer a range of services from Hourly Rate to complete Managed Services and would be happy to discuss your specific scenario.

with Amanda Gore

I am not a technical person, a web person or even an online guru. But I do know that doing something online changed my business. Five years ago, when I returned from living in the USA, I had been ‘forgotten’ as a speaker! Being an early adopter and having an innate sense of how people like to communicate, it came to me to put lots of my clips on YouTube. People were aghast that I was giving my

We passed the million views mark at the end of last year and those clips have been the strongest source of new speaking jobs for me. I feel blessed that many people use them as training tools, and when they have bigger conferences they invite me to speak based on what they saw in the clips. If you Google something and in the series of search results there are written answers and also YouTube answers – which one do you choose? YouTube, more often than not. People are so addicted to watching TV or some form of electronic movie that they

will usually choose YouTube. To learn how to do something, seeing it done is much easier than reading about it. Think about how you can educate your market and become the expert because you are on TV – or the equivalent of TV – internet TV! Teach people how to use your product and show them all the possible variations. It worked for me. The videos don’t have to be fabulous quality, just be entertaining or at least interesting and energetic. Sunshine Coast Mum Goes From Flabby and Broke to

Fit and Financial. Sunshine Coast Mum Kym Rayfield has always had an entrepreneurial flair, however her resolve was solidly tested when personal reasons forced her to make the tough decision to walk away from a very successful Maroochydore business she had lovingly built from the ground up.

Kym found herself stuck in a rut both financially and mentally, and at the same time was also battling the bulge. Forced to do some real soul searching, Kym found herself at a local CrossFit gym and with nothing to lose but her tuck shop arms, set about a mission to lose the flab and reclaim her life. Being an ‘all or nothing’ girl, Kym threw herself into vigorous workouts and quickly got into the best shape of her life. But that’s not all she got. Kym found a niche in the CrossFit market where athletes had no access to appropriate weight lifting handgrips. “CrossFit requires a lot of lifting and my hands were torn to shreds, everyone was complaining that there was nothing on the market that was suitable, and that’s when the light bulb moment happened,” says Kym. Armed with the last of her savings Kym set about purchasing a sewing machine and decided that the only way forward was to make her own set of specifically designed ‘Pull Up Grips’ to protect her hands. Initially it was only Kym and lucky husband Sean who were privy to her Pull Up Grips but the quality and effectiveness of the grips soon saw demand go through the roof. Not only was everyone at her local CrossFit club asking for a pair but the news quickly spread throughout the entire CrossFit community AFTER BEFORE worldwide. Sales escalated very quickly and to such a degree that within months Kym was forced to employ a team of professional sewers to work around the clock. As soon as production was able to meet demand, it was then that JAW was firmly established as an instantly successful worldwide brand. “I was completely astounded at the rapid success of JAW, from a tiny little niche product made at my kitchen table in 2012, to a worldwide brand that now employs over 13 staff and has its own warehouse and retail showroom in Coolum, all in under 2 years, nothing could have prepared me for the excitement of that,” says Kym. JAW now has a very extensive and growing product range that includes men’s and women’s active sportswear clothing aimed at not only the CrossFit market but the general fitness market with the inspirational motto ‘Find Your Strength’. Kym says, “We want to change the way people look at physical fitness and exercise apparel is paving the way for people to take control. People are always telling us that when they wear our gear they feel amazing and strong, the psychology of that is when someone feels great they are much more likely to be motivated and put it all into their training, to find their strength.” Kym has obviously ‘found her strength’ and is now not only one of the fittest mother’s you’ll see getting around the Coast but she is also the owner of a local business success story, a business that is continuing to grow at lightening speed. JAW is one Sunshine Coast company to watch as they continue world domination in the fitness clothing and accessories market. www.justanotherwod.com.au BUSINESS MATTERS 49

As long as Pamela can remember, she’s been a reader. And ever since, at the age of six, encountering a photograph of Enid Blyton seated at her desk in an English country house, dogs at her feet, probably engaged on rattling out another Famous Five adventure, she decided that she wanted to be a writer.

Have you been to the Drift Bar yet? You may remember Shane Hepburn as one of the owners of the very successful Lot 104 in Mooloolaba. Shane is now the proud owner of the Drift Bar which is proving to be equally as successful for Caloundra. Shane Hepburn noticed the status quo of people not from Caloundra describing the town as old and vacating the area for newer areas. However, growing up in Caloundra, Shane knew there was a far more beautiful side to the town and he wanted to showcase it through a stylish yet relaxed venue. This is when he decided in December 2013 to launch ‘Drift’ – a bar and dining experience with live music and million dollar views over Caloundra’s beautiful beaches. Working with the growing number of innovative business

owners drawn to Caloundra was also an encouragement to start the fresh new bar with the like of people such as Bill Darby, Tim Adams, Jonny Bundellu and the proactive Caloundra Chamber team. The start of March saw Drift bar start undergoing their second stage of renovations which will be completed just in time for Easter. with Dranko Magic We are so thrilled with this issue being our 60th issue of the magazine. I personally get to meet so many of you when I deliver the magazine and love the feedback that I so often get from you. It is great for me to be at the face of some wonderful compliments on the Magazine over the last few years and love that so many of you now know me and stop me to say Hi. This issue of the magazine is all about online success and I guess I need to admit that I didn’t really think I did much

So my advice is even if online isn’t really your thing, try using technology to help take your business to a new level, like me you may be surpised at how easy it makes things. online. I don’t do Facebook, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do LinkedIn, to be honest I don’t even know what they mean! But when I think about it, I do more than I originally thought. I do all of our invoicing online. We now use Xero, which has been great for our business, it means that quite a few of us can look at the same book, even at the same time, without any hassle. Dropbox has been something we now use quite often as well, it makes it really easy for me to easily share our high resolution photography images both with our designer and also with advertisers. I know that Business Matters has recently been doing quite a bit of work with LinkedIn and I hear that that is going great guns, so I may even try my hand at this LinkedIn thing. What is a Restaurant? Is it just a building with a kitchen that prepares and serves food? Absolutely not! A restaurant is an experience in culinary delight in an atmosphere of relaxation and pleasure. It is more than just the meal. Atmosphere is so important. Are the lights too bright? Is the noise level too high? Is the carpet too loud? Are the wait staff indifferent? Is poor atmosphere driving customers away?

Bartercard: helping businesses grow on the Sunshine Coast for over 22 years Thanks Bartercard for the last four years. I have bought so many fantastic things on Bartercard including tickets to motivational speakers, holidays, computers, even a pedigree kitten. I pay rent on Bartercard and just recently purchased a property paying the deposit on Bartercard. I can honestly say it has been great for my business. Thanks again for your service and always smiling demeanour.

The more we investigate the opportunities in Bartercard the more doors open, especially within the hospitality sector. Taking the time to better understand the Bartercard system has shown us how to access revenue previously lost in room nights that would otherwise have expired valueless. Bartercard for us simply means more business.

Vickie Magic Editor, Business Matters Magazine

Bill Darby Director, Rumba Beach Resort

I’m a firm believer in the concept of bartering and saving cash for better uses and I believe that using Bartercard has helped us to keep ahead of the competition and improve our business. We now primarily use Bartercard to win cash contracts as it’s an effective method to close a deal.

I use Bartercard trade dollars to satisfy my travel bug, but I do recognise the value of using them in a way that benefits me financially. I spend trade dollars on services for my rental property that are tax deductible and also allows me to offer a well maintained property to maximise cash rental returns

BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT STRATEGIES with Kylie Anderson

A key prerequisite to maximising value in your business is to minimise the everyday role you play in keeping it running. Happily, achieving this aim also allows you to do more of what you really want to do in life and less of what you don’t, a goal we strive to achieve for our business clients. One common time commitment issue for business owners is marketing. So business owners really need to avail themselves of the hands-free approach that a good online marketing

The crucial step is to know your market, ideal customers and marketing goals. Most business owners have a really good feel for this, but few take the time to set their ideas down, a process that in itself can really clarify strategies. The next step is to carefully consider and set some Key Performance Indicators against which to measure your goals. These are unique to every campaign.

localupdate Sunshine Coast Council has welcomed two new free WiFi locations to the network it established in 2012.

Council welcomes more

Economic Development Portfolio Councillor Stephen Robinson has congratulated Stockland for its two sites at Bells Reach in Caloundra and Brightwater in Mountain Creek. “Council started this WiFi initiative to get people connected right across the Sunshine Coast,” Cr Robinson said. “We now have 36 hotspots in 23 locations across the region in our libraries, council forecourts, art gallery, caravan parks, the airport and Cotton Tree, Coolum and Mooloolaba esplanade business precinct open spaces. “Council is working towards a sustainable economy and as part of its Economic Development Strategy, identified the significance of a digital economy – free WiFi plays a critical role in this by connecting local businesses and the community. “This is highlighted by the 500,000 times the free WiFi has been used since it was established.

sites to network

“Users simply connect to the ‘Free WiFi Sunshine Coast’ service to access up to two hours of broadband speed internet connection – and it’s up to three times as fast as comparable services in other council areas. “It’s great to see that Stockland has now joined the effort by signing up to the Big Air Community Broadband service we have used for the past two years.” At Bells Reach, free WiFi is available in the community’s popular Blue Park with coverage including the playground, BBQ area, new Pod Café and other open space. At Brightwater, free WiFi is available in the community’s popular Lakefront Park on Amberjack Street, with coverage including the playground area and surrounding waterfront.

HOME AND AWAY CATERING Dear David and Staff, On behalf of the Social Committee and the residents of Bellcarra Retirement Resort, I would like to thank you for the fabulous meal you and your staff presented us with. We have had great reports from the residents. The meals were still hot when we received it and that is a very difficult task serving so many people at one time. We will definitely ask you again to do catering for us. Thank you, Marlene (Secretary)
