You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you. Maya Angelou
This issue is about money and you. What is your relationship with money? Does it own you? Does it run you? Does it make you who you are? Are you driven by it? How much do you have to have? Can you live without it? Do you make decisions for your business based on it? So here’s the thing. I honestly believe that money is irrelevant, that money doesn’t matter. I honestly believe that if you are driven by purpose and by passion and they are what you make your decisions on, that your purpose and passion are the things that make you get up in the morning, the things that light you up, the things that make you smile, make you do what you do every day – I believe that only then the money just comes. You don’t have to worry about it, plan for it, hope for it, when you are driven by purpose and passion and want to make a real difference in the world. Then everything you touch will turn to gold. Believe me, I know this to be an absolute fact. If there is one gift I can offer you, one goal I can help you to aspire to, it is this – DON’T do anything for money, DO EVERYTHING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE in the world and in the life of the people around you, AND THE MONEY WILL COME. Not magic, just common business sense.

Top Ten Ways to
Not
Let Money Control You
by Steve Goodman Money may not necessarily be the root of all evil as has often been said, but it can control you. Whatever your income bracket, everyone seems to worry about money. I do not profess to have all the answers of how to solve everyone’s financial woes, but I do know a few ways to control your money, instead of letting it control you. Here are 10 of them.
1. Live within your means. That may seem like a no-brainer, but it is the biggest mistake most people make in not managing money wisely, and it usually starts with the overuse of credit cards. The key to living within in your means requires a mature understanding of the difference between needs and wants. It also means dismissing the foolish attitude of keeping up with the Joneses. Make a list of what it is you truly need to consider yourself comfortable. Then add to that only the extras that are really important to you, and that you can obtain without going into significant debt. And speaking of debt…
2. Minimise Debt. This is related to living within your means, but it is different. There are good and necessary 6 ISSUE 62
debts, such as mortgages and maybe small business or student loans, but there is also toxic debt, primarily in the form of consumer credit. Look in your wallet – how many credit cards do you have? If it is more than two or three, it’s way too many!
3. Learn to budget. You just knew I was going to bring up that word, didn’t you? But budgeting does not have to be a scary thing, or an impossible task. Start by taking a look at your bank statement. Go back about three months, and separate into categories everything you spend money on, then budget accordingly. There are several apps and on-line budgeting tools available that can make the process of creating and maintaining a budget easier. Level Money and Mint are two free apps for both Android and iOS that are very popular.
4. Appreciate what you have. Take a look around and count the good things and blessings that you do have in your life, instead of bemoaning things that you feel you do not have enough money to acquire. If you are reading this issue of Business Matters, you probably have a good
job or a relatively successful business, a home, a car or two, and you live on the Sunshine Coast – not too shabby!
5. Use Auto Pay. Many of your regular monthly bills, from utilities to insurance, will likely have an auto pay option, and usually offer a discount to go paperless and elect this option. You can save a little each month with the discount, plus stop stressing over missed or late payments.
6. Pay yourself. And speaking of payments, don’t forget to pay yourself! Savings can often be difficult, but one sure-fire way to put a little away for a rainy day is to consider yourself one of your monthly creditors. Set up an auto sweep with a practical amount once a month from your checking accounting to your savings account. You would be surprised at how quickly it adds up. 7. Out with the bad, in with the good. One way to take control of money is to understand the difference between ‘good money’ and ‘bad money.’ Basically, good money is spent on things that appreciate in value, and/or produce income and increased cash flow. Bad money
feature is spent on things that do not produce any income, or things that are subject to constant depreciation or a loss in value.
8. Know your Net Worth. Just like it sounds, your net worth is simply all of your assets, the things you own of value, less your debt, but very few people take the time to actually figure that out. You need to sit down once a year and take stock. Make a list of all of your assets: bank accounts, any real estate properties and their contents, your vehicles, your portfolio of investments, life insurance, annuities, income properties etc. Then do the same for your liabilities: your mortgage, car loans, student loans, lines of credit, credit card debt and anything else.
9. Have disability and life insurance. No-one wants to think about the possibilities of being unable to work due to a disabling injury or illness, or worse, the death of a spouse who may provide the primary income of the family. Having adequate insurance can relieve this monetary worry.
10. Seek professional advice. No, not because money may be driving you crazy, but do not discount the value of seeking the advice of a financial planner or certified tax professional to help you take better control of your money matters. Think about this. Why did you start your business, or enter your chosen career in the first place? If you said to “make money,” then you really are missing the point. Money certainly is important, but it should not be the most important thing in your life. Balancing the importance of money with the other things in your life – with the other rewards you get from your work or business – is the easiest way to remain its master, instead of letting it have a hold over you.

The Privacy Act: What does it mean to you as a business owner?
by Peter Gjersoe On Wednesday 12 March 2014 Australian organisations and Commonwealth government agencies were required to be fully compliant with the Australian Privacy Act. If you enter Australian Privacy Act 2014 in Google’s search box, the search results in approximately 382,000,000 hits. However, when speaking with business owners in general, there seems to be very little knowledge, nor an appreciation of how the Act can impact their business.
Following are some questions you may ask: 1. What is it? “12th March, 2014 saw the biggest change in privacy law in 25 years,” said Australian Information Commissioner, Professor John McMillan. Background: The Privacy Act 1988 has been regulating the handling of information about 8 ISSUE 62
individuals, including the collection, use, storage and disclosure of personal information. Since the Privacy Act 1988 there has been a massive explosion in the volume of information being collected about individuals through websites, social media and other means. In addition, there has also been unprecedented development in technology capabilities, especially cloud computing involving cross-border transfer of personal information. The Australian Privacy Act is the Australian Privacy Commissioner’s response to the requirement for the protection of an individual’s information, combined with more transparency and opportunities for consumers to have a say in what their information is being used for.
2. Who is affected? The Act covers Commonwealth government agencies and Australian based businesses. There is a tendency to focus on businesses which turn over $3,000,000+ annually; however the Act provides
circumstances under which it applies for businesses with less than $3,000,000 turnover annually. There are additional requirements for businesses providing credit and/or credit reporting. The additional requirements cover transparency, the security of the information and the consumer’s right to access and update the information being kept about them.
3. Are there potential penalties, and what are they?
Yes. There are two areas of impact:
Financial: Failure to comply with the Privacy Act could result in penalties of up to $340,000 for individuals or up to $1.7 million for organisations per breach. Risk of reputation: Over 60 per cent of Australians surveyed as part of a study conducted by the Privacy Commission (“Community Attitudes to Privacy”) decided not to deal with an organisation because of concerns over how their personal information had been or may be used.
feature
4. Who will be enforcing the penalties? The Privacy Commissioner now has additional powers to conduct assessments of privacy performance and the ability to enforce undertakings and seek civil penalties in the case of serious breaches.
5. What are the five most important things I need to do now? 1. Review ‘your public face’, your website and ensure the following: Is the organisation displaying its privacy principles in a highly visible manner on its website? Note: ensure references are made to post 14/03/2014 ‘Australian Privacy Principles’ (APPs), and not pre 14/03/2014 ‘National Privacy Principles’ (NPP’s) and further:
Is it clear:
• what kind of personal information the organisation is collecting?
• how the organisation collects, holds, uses and discloses personal information about users?
• why the organisation is collecting personal information?
• how users can request access to their personal information?
• how users can request corrections to their personal information?
• how users can find out if the organisation is likely to disclose personal information to overseas recipients?
• how users can find out what countries those recipients may be in?
Is the website at any point collecting information by use of a technology called cookies? If so, is there an optin or opt-out possibility for the user? 2. In connection with the update of the organisation’s website, review privacy procedures and policies to ensure they are in accordance with the Act. It is recommended that the organisation does not consider personal information as a single entity, but considers the overall operation and use of personal information throughout.
3. Institute an ongoing internal education and training program covering how the organisation protects its clients’ information in accordance with the Act. 4. Prepare a formal internal manual: ‘Privacy Compliance Policies & Procedures’ meeting the requirement of the Act. It should be noted that this document is likely to be the first item required in case of an audit by the Privacy Commissioner, and will be used as the basis for judging how well the organisation is meeting its own objectives. Finally, the benefits of a ‘Privacy Compliance Policies & Procedures’ manual should not be underestimated. It makes running an organisation much easier when there is a written system to follow, and a business operation is not relying on individuals who know ‘how things really work.’ 5. Appoint a third party to conduct regular physical inspections to ensure processes and procedures are followed, as well as technical penetration tests to ensure the organisation is protected from an external computer attack.
The Australian Privacy Act is the Australian Privacy Commissioner’s response to the requirement for the protection of an individual’s information, combined with more transparency and opportunities for consumers to have a say in what their information is being used for.
About GjeneSys Pty Ltd and Peter Gjersoe; Peter started his corporate career when he joined IBM Australia as a Trainee Sales Rep in the mainframe division (DPD). Over the next 27 years, he held the responsibilities of Sales Manager, Country Manager Australia and New Zealand, and GM AsiaPacific for a number of companies in the IT and Financial Transactions area. Peter has lived and worked in: Brisbane, Papua New Guinea, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, and Hong Kong.
Peter became very concerned in the middle of 2013 when it became obvious that the Privacy Act has very few guidelines for businesses and public sector entities to deploy. This potentially means that resources will be wasted, firstly to understand the requirements of the Act, and then to develop and implement processes and procedures that may or may not meet the Act’s requirements. There are very close parallels between the Australian Privacy Act and a regulation for financial transactions globally called PCI DSS. PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) was created by the major payment card brands (American Express, MasterCard Worldwide, Visa International, JCB International and Discover Financial Services) and first published in 2006. PCI was developed to encourage and enhance best practices that enable organisations to protect their clients’ information from external and internal violation.

taxinformation
A re T hou O rganised? TAX PLANNING By Matt Dryden • Pay super on time! Super paid after the due date (28th of the following month of each quarter) is generally not deductible to the employer. • For companies look at using franked dividends as part of your business drawings/wages strategy. Distributing franked dividends via family trusts can be an effective way to minimise tax across multiple periods. • Try and avoid owing the company money for greater than 12 months. These loans generally result in the company paying tax on a calculated interest charge. You may know these as Div 7A loans which are sometimes used to smooth out tax on distributions over many years. • Prepare a log book or look at FBT exempt vehicles for your company or Trust owned car that the owner uses. Even though you may not see it, your business is likely paying GST and income tax on what is called employee contributions that is debited to the owner’s account each year. On a $40,000 vehicle that can equate to around $12,000 in tax paid. • Review your structure. Operating under an ineffective structure can cost you thousands and there is no one ideal structure for all businesses. • For businesses with a turnover of $2m or less you can obtain an immediate deduction for assets costing less the $1,000 so acquire small assets 10 ISSUE 62
before 30 June. You may recall that this limit was $6,500 however it was repealed (via draft legislation yet to be passed! It’s being held up along with the repeal of the carbon tax) as at January One and reduced back to $1,000 so be careful as the $6,500 immediate write off is still being advertised by some retailers as an incentive to buy before 30 June. • Take out personal insurances in the right entity. It makes most sense to take out income protection insurance in your own name or in the company/ trust you operate your business so you benefit from the tax deductible premiums. However, life insurance is best paid by your super fund as the premiums are not deductible if paid outside of the fund. Trauma insurance is best not paid by your super fund as you may have difficulty accessing the payouts. Tax planning call to action before 30 June: • Write off bad debts. • Write off obsolete stock. • Distribute from your trusts to family members. Parents and children over 18 with little of no other income and not on the government support such as the pension are ideal. • Salary sacrifice super contributions to bring your total contributions up to $25,000. • Take out income protection insurance and pay for 12 months before 30 June.
• If you earn less than 48,516 contribute $1,000 into your super and the government will tip in up to $500. There are other requirements. The advice above is general in nature and you should seek advice from your accountant to see if they apply to you.

SHOW ME THE MONEY In keeping with the current topic of budgets, it’s timely to discuss the importance of using budgets to benefit you and your business at start-up and when established. There are three basic budget lists to assist financial planning, showing where money is required or being gobbled up. Personal Budget How much does it cost for you and your family to be on this planet? Make a list now of where the money goes:
List all the expenses required to get this business off the ground. List all the purchases and one-off costs, business registration, company setup, equipment, leases, insurances, website, marketing materials, working capital etc. Will you need to borrow or use your savings, and when will this investment be returned? When expanding business or introducing a new product line, a budget can identify real costs and validate viability. Operational Budget List all monthly expenses required to operate. Include rents, vehicles, fuel, phone, internet, insurance, wages, advertising, loans etc. Remember, these fixed costs will accumulate regardless

of having no customers or taking the weekend off. Reviewing budgets can identify potential for savings. Budgets equip entrepreneurs and operators to see where the expenses are. Coupled with break-even analysis, budgets enable financial planning for sales targets, cash burn and growth investment. One more thing – you don’t need to start or operate a business to go broke. Better to do the financial calculations on paper first, know your budget expenses, know your breakeven point and understand the viability of your current business model.

money making With this issue being about money, we thought local business Ord Minnett at Buderim was a pretty good place to start. So BM caught up with one of the owners, Mark Davidson. Ord Minnett is one of the nation’s most respected financial institutions, with a proud Australian heritage of over 150 years. It is 30 per cent owned by JPMorgan, a global financial services firm with operations in more than 50 countries, and 70 per cent owned by IOOF Holdings Limited, a leading Australian fully integrated financial services company.

All seven advisers have extensive experience in all areas of financial advice, specialising in portfolio management, stocks and shares, fixed interest securities, Centrelink and nursing homes, insurance options and financial strategy and structures. Ord Minnett’s make a point of matching the skills of the adviser to the needs of the client and work as a team with two advisers allocated to manage each client situation, giving the client access to a blend of skills as well as a combination of ideas. We asked Mark to give our readers some money saving and money making tips. Saving money is easy: You just have to spend less than you earn. Thus there are two main ways to save. You can either earn more (not a controllable option for most people) or spend less. The best way to spend less is to have money taken from your account so you don’t see it and get tempted to spend it. If you are saving for a specific purpose like a house deposit, car or holiday, you could separate this into a general savings account. If the purpose of the saving is more long term, for example retirement savings, this could be invested in superannuation or a share investment account. Many people ignore superannuation, but when contributions are taxed at only 15 per cent compared to possibly
much higher rates outside of super, there is a real incentive to accumulate retirement assets via super.
To make money: You have to invest in assets that increase in value. While there are some alternative investments that do this such as hedge funds or commodities, the two main asset classes in which people invest to make money are shares and property. Both have provided similar returns over the longer term and many people have preferences for investing in one or the other. Mark says he personally invests in both. One of the advantages of investing in shares is that you can start with a small amount and add to it by making regular contributions by direct debit. In addition, transaction costs are very low compared to property and they are very liquid. They can be sold instantly and the money can be in your bank account in three days. The best tip Mark can give you for making money in the sharemarket is to invest in quality companies
and not chase speculative booms. Reinvest your dividends and don’t get tempted into selling by sensationalist newspaper headlines. Ord Minnett has many clients, ranging from those just starting out to those with portfolios worth millions of dollars. One story Mark shared, which was a very encouraging story for those just starting out, was about his daughter who is 22. She was working part-time at Jupiters Casino in Brisbane throughout university and now has a full-time job. She has accumulated almost $60,000 in investments due to a regular savings plan and a father who doesn’t stop nagging her to save. She is well on the way to her first house deposit. Another example of someone who has benefitted from Ord MInnett’s advice is a couple who sold their business and received approximately $1 million, which Ord Minnett managed to get into superannuation tax free. Some years later, this is now valued at $1.5 million and the couple receive over $100,000 per annum tax free from their portfolio.
So if you are looking for someone local to help you accumulate wealth for your future, Mark and his team at Ord Minnett Buderim could be the perfect solution. www.ordsbuderim.com.au

In the heart of the Sunshine Coast, nestled within Caloundra’s only five star resort, Rumba Beach Resort, is the hidden gem Rumba Room – a boutique conference, wedding and event space catering for 10 – 150 guests. Earlier this year I put on a ladies success weekend retreat there. I do these weekends a few times a year. This one was particularly special and I need to say thank-you firstly to the Rumba Resort for the beautiful five star rooms overlooking the water at Caloundra – we didn’t have to travel far to arrive at this beautiful place. We were all thrilled at the calibre of the hotel rooms to begin with, and then equally thrilled with the conference facility. Everything was set out just exactly the way we wanted. Working out the catering for the weekend wasn’t simple because we had all sorts of diets to cater for – vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, no sugar etc – but I have to say there wasn’t one person who didn’t rave about the quality of the food. Darryn Fitzpatrick and Kristy Rowe, who are the hands-on management of the Rumba Room, just

Every break the ladies got pretty excited to see what other gorgeous mouthwatering treat was going to come out of the kitchen. was too much trouble. If we changed times for any of our breaks, or asked for anything that was out of the ordinary, there was never a problem. These guys truly understand service with a smile and customer service was just second nature. This really made things easy for me putting on a conference.
Rumba Room specialises in Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free and Low-Sugar Catering, as well as offering Paleo themed menus. We made great use of the state of the art built-in AV Equipment, such as the data projector and screen and BOSE stereo system with iPod compatibility, which were all complimentary. But I guess the thing that stood out the most to me and our conference group was the absolute attention to detail, and the fact that absolutely nothing

Think you can’t create wealth from equity? Think Again! meet CHris CHilds In this Wealthy’n’Wise edition, property investment expert Chris Childs gives you her professional tips on goal mapping, financial platforms and money management. If you have a mortgage, and the value of your home is higher than your home loan, you have equity. With equity comes options, you can use equity to create wealth. Ever heard the saying the rich get richer? This is the way they do it. They take their equity and using other people’s money, usually the banks profits, they borrow more to buy more and this produces more equity. They are on the ever-increasing wheel of wealth. Unfortunately, most people are on the other wheel, the ever-increasing wheel of debt. If you have a mortgage and some personal or ‘consumer’ debts like credit cards, personal loans or car loans it is amazing how quickly you can become overwhelmed with payments. It seems like all of your income is committed to repayments and basic living expenses like groceries, leaving little or no money to pay for other essentials like insurances, regos, school expenses and electricity. It seems you need to either go without luxuries like holidays, Christmas and upgrading furniture or worse still they need to go on ‘interest free’ or credit cards which add to the burden and the whole cycle starts again! Refinancing can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Your best friend, if after refinancing you change the way you do your banking and begin to create wealth, or your worst enemy if you use equity to get out of consumer debt and then repeat the process of consumer debt. Money just doesn’t have to be that stressful. It is amazing when you actually look at how to do your banking properly and more importantly how to manage your income or cash flow, just how quickly you can regain your control. Are you ready to get off the wheel of debt and look at how to do your banking the right way? This could be just the beginning…
Look forward to seeing you soon Chris Childs

meet lYnn levitt Prior to becoming the education and training manager for Think Money, Lynn herself was one of our clients. Within a few short months Lynn was reaching her goals of securing her financial future by implementing the strategies that she was coached by Chris Childs and Yaseen Hull (Debt reduction specialist). The process of being able to work out what you want and when you want is not something that comes easily to most people. Through a series of techniques and mostly easy to understand information that is science-based, Lynn couples this with a fun process of writing and drawing your thoughts and ideas to assist you in reaching your desired goals. For Think Money clients the Goal Mapping assists them in achieving the strategy that Chris or Yaseen puts in to place for them. The interesting thing is it is never about the money or the property they are just the tools we use to get what we want, which is often things like freedom, a new business, financial security.
Lynn has successfully delivered Goal Mapping to over 1000 people with amazing results. The secret is to take action and follow the steps. What is the point of learning something new and not implementing it? That’s just not something that works with Lynn, she makes you follow through and produce the evidence that you have done so.

Our Ships Are Coming In P&O Cruises has listed four more new cruises from Sydney to Mooloolaba, in addition to the announced cruise in August. The new cruise dates, which are already taking bookings, occur in July, August and October of 2015 and March 2016, sailing on the 11-deck Pacific Pearl. Mayor Mark Jamieson said even before the first cruise had arrived from Sydney, P&O Cruises and its parent company Carnival Cruises were showing confidence in the short- cruise market to the Sunshine Coast. “This is really wonderful news,” Mayor Jamieson said. “When we first heard P&O was considering a trial cruise to Mooloolaba we were naturally excited and honoured – but this news is truly fantastic, and it shows great confidence in the Sunshine Coast as a viable destination, even before the first ship has sailed.”
Mayor Jamieson said festivities surrounding the inaugural cruise arriving on 16 August were building up. “We are planning an outrigger boat race – the Carnival Classic – which will see competitors race from Mooloolaba out to the anchored ship, around it and back to shore,” he said. “In addition, a big market with music and other entertainment will operate from the Wharf. A lot of local businesses are making special arrangements to give the 1800 Pacific Pearl passengers a wide range of options to enjoy our attractions. Our future as a potential regular cruise destination is now a real consideration and a major boost to our economy.” www.pocruises.com.au

MAYORAL BUSINESS which is aligned to and reflects the new single State planning policy.
with Mark Jamieson
The region’s first truly collaborative economic development strategy was delivered in September last year, led by Sunshine Coast Council, working with business and industry groups, the education sector and the community. Since then our jobs figures have improved dramatically and confidence continues to grow. It’s my belief a similar conclusion will be able to be drawn next year about the new and recently launched Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme. The new scheme will provide the right conditions for businesses to prosper; it will make it easier – and cheaper – to set up a new business; it will prove much simpler to navigate, use and understand; and it will significantly improve the efficiency of the planning process as we move from two planning schemes and multiple state planning policies to a single planning instrument
The Sunshine Coast is a rapidly growing region – one of the fastest in the nation – and it is essential we have a coherent vision and an easyto-understand set of planning rules to ensure that this growth is managed in an orderly and coordinated way. We all love our region and our lifestyle; those who were born here are naturally proud and protective of it, and it is these same values which attract so many thousands of people to move here. So it is incumbent upon this council to ensure we protect and enshrine these values within the primary planning document which guides our future – and it ensures we get the balance right between the imperatives of economy, ecology and community. It delivers one plan for the region for the first time, giving the property industry, investors and residents one clear set of rules for development. It has been aligned to the goals of the Regional Economic Development Strategy, which I mentioned earlier, to encourage the right businesses to operate in the right locations across the Coast. An enterprise corridor between the Sunshine Coast Airport and
Caloundra has been identified as a key focus for growth, infrastructure investment and economic activity. The assessment level requirements for a range of business and industry activities have been reviewed and lowered where practicable to make it simpler and cheaper to set up a new business. For example: a home-based business (like a bed-and-breakfast, home office or a home-based childcare business), or a low impact industry, may be able to set up – in the right zones – without a development application at all. Now that will save a lot of time and money for a lot of people who are trying to get a new small or micro-business up and running I would like to thank the many individuals, community groups and representative bodies who participated in consultation events and provided submissions to the draft planning scheme. This project has included one of the largest consultation programs in the region’s history.
Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson keeps BM readers up to date on what’s happening on the Coast.

IS HIRING A PROFESSIONAL REALLY WORTH IT? We have all probably tried to take on a job to save a few dollars when we know we should have hired a professional, and it’s ended up costing more than it should have. You wouldn’t cut corners on a vital part of something you need doing but have no idea about, such as a service on your car. So why would you cut corners on your I.T. needs, which probably hold most of your business’s data and processing? How much of a standstill would your business be at if your computers were out of action for a few days? Why it pays to hire a professional: • It allows you to focus on your business • It saves time and gains productivity • It can actually reduce costs • You can have a system tailored to your business’s needs
“If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.” Here’s an important I.T. check list that could save you time and money in the case of a mishap: • Back up • Security • Data protection

• Battery back up • Surge/power filtration When hiring a professional, it’s recommended that you research the service or product you’re after to find the best company to use, and then research background information on the company. Are they qualified? How long have they been around? What kind of reputation do they have? Do they know their stuff? Do they have attention to detail? Are they focused on helping you? Last of all, if something is going to cost a little extra but is guaranteed to be done correctly, it’s better to pay a professional than attempt to do the job yourself, or use the cheapest in town. Remember, most of the time ‘good stuff ain’t cheap and cheap stuff ain’t good.’

FIVE REASONS TO AVOID BANKRUPTCY
Looking for debt relief?
Bankruptcy can affect every aspect of your life. When people get into debt, their minds immediately jump to bankruptcy. Declaring bankruptcy is commonly viewed as the easy way out of debt, but there is nothing easy about bankruptcy. This complicated process is stressful, lengthy and involves several rules, restrictions and obligations you have to live by. Bankruptcy does have its place in Australia. For those with no other choice, bankruptcy can provide a solid foundation from which to rebuild their wealth. For everyone else, bankruptcy is something you should avoid. If you are convinced bankruptcy is the right path for your debt recovery journey, consider the following points outlining why you should avoid it. 1. It could affect your employment
Debt Relief Hotline offers a range of positive solutions to your debt. Whether you are only just starting to feel the pinch or if your debts are spinning out of control, we have a solution for you.
The last thing you need when you can’t pay your debts is to lose your job. There are certain occupations within Australia which won’t allow you to continue to work if you declare bankruptcy. Before you declare bankruptcy, you should confirm with your organisation as to whether bankruptcy will affect your professional membership, or your ability to practise a particular trade. 2. You could lose your home When you become bankrupt, the bankruptcy trustee in charge of your case becomes the owner of any share you have in a property, whether you are a part owner or the whole owner. Most likely, the trustee will arrange to sell the property, with all proceeds going to your creditors to repay some of your debts. 3. It is a long lasting commitment
Debt Relief Hotline can help with:
The period of bankruptcy generally only lasts for three years, but it will remain on your credit rating for seven years and your name will be on the National Personal Insolvency Index for life.
Budgeting Debt Refinancing
4. Your life is restricted
Debt Agreements Bankruptcy
During the term of bankruptcy, you will have to adhere to restrictions applied to activities with a high expense. You cannot travel overseas without restrictions. You should avoid bankruptcy if you don’t want these restrictions in your life. 5. Your capacity to earn is limited Bankruptcy places many thresholds on your assets, income and windfall gains. If you earn more than the threshold and if your assets are worth more than the set threshold, the extra money will be given to your creditors. What are my options to avoid bankruptcy? Thankfully there are a number of other debt relief options available to people in debt, so you can avoid bankruptcy. If you think you may need some debt relief, talk to Debt Relief Hotline for a free confidential chat. Remember, the best advice is to act quickly while you still have options available.

outsourcing matters MONTY G. HOOKE | EZY VA
DOES OUTSOURCING OFFSHORE ACTUALLY SAVE YOU MONEY? A lot of business owners who have tried outsourcing offshore will tell you that it’s just not worth it. While you can get a huge range of services at a fraction of the price, a lot of the time it can be more trouble than it’s worth. This was certainly my experience when I first started – it would take me 10 hours of my own time to co-ordinate a 10 hour task, and I would end up pulling my hair out. But while some struggle, why is it that others, like me now, are able to very effectively run teams offshore with similar efficiency and productivity to using a local team, while saving quite a lot of money? Here are my top tips: 1. Don’t try and do it yourself. If you’ve never had experience dealing with staff offshore, don’t expect for a minute it should be the same as dealing with people locally. Dealing direct with the staff without managers in place will only get you burned. Work with a company that has their own team, staff managers and project managers in place (if they have managers locally, even better). You’ll pay a little bit extra, but you’ll easily get more than that back in productivity. And more importantly, it will personally save you a heap of time. 2. Pick your tasks to outsource. There are some things that are too difficult to get done overseas. And don’t take your advice from the offshore staff on what can and can’t be done – they will say yes to everything. Consult with a local expert. 3. Any ongoing task that has a documented process is much easier to teach to offshore staff. Anything that is a project, meaning something new without a process, will require a project manager to be responsible for the outcome. Don’t try and hand projects to offshore staff without having an internal project manager at your end.
Best things to outsource offshore: Social media, research, web and graphic design, data entry, transcription, document and e-book creation, bookkeeping, SEO, virtual admin. Follow these rules and you will be able to get a higher rate of productivity and save money in your business.

STARTING YOUR PROPERTY PORTFOLIO Property is so often a topic of conversation on which everybody has an opinion, but did you know that less than six per cent of Australians own an investment property? For what most consider to be one of the traditionally secure forms of investment, a few simple steps could set you on the path to financial freedom.
Check your financial capability An obvious place to start, but intimate knowledge of your disposable income is the first factor to take into account when purchasing an investment property. This is as simple as listing your assets, identifying your income and calculating your expenses.
Assess your attitude to risk vs reward This is a personal decision which is different for everyone, but identifying your risk profile will help you sleep soundly once the investment is made.
Understand your budget A good mortgage broker can help hone this number, but sticking to it is crucial. Overspending on your first investment property may inhibit your ability to buy another one when the time is right.
Be informed/know your market What will your budget allow you to buy? Are you looking for capital growth or rental returns? How much ongoing maintenance does it need? Is there anything needing immediate attention? What are the vacancy rates in the area? Researching your target area and individual properties within your budget will make the eventual decision so much easier.

smile matters DR PAUL DEVER | OCEAN ORTHODONTICS
MEETING CUSTOMER FINANCIAL NEEDS In this tougher financial climate, postGlobal Financial Crisis, businesses have been forced to work harder on a lot of different fronts to ensure their customers keep walking through the door. The Sunshine Coast has not been immune from this. In fact, I believe the Coast has probably been affected harder than other regions as it has been a magnet for young families moving here from the southern states. In speaking with these parents, it becomes apparent that apart from the lifestyle, one of the biggest drawcards is the promise of affordable house and land prices. The chance to live in a nicer location in a newer house on a bigger block of land is an offer too good to pass up. As we talk further, I quite often hear where the sting in the tail is – the cost of living. Many of these parents describe that everyday necessities such as groceries and petrol seem to cost so much more up here than they did in Sydney or Melbourne. So the question is: How can businesses compete for the remaining hard-earned dollars which are spread thin after the everyday living expenses have taken their toll?
We believe that you need to offer different payment options. People manage their money in different ways. So offering different payment plans to try to accommodate your clients needs is important. It could be an upfront deposit prior to the commencement of your services and then monthly direct debits from a bank account or credit card. Alternatively, another option is a number of lump sum payments over the course of the services (such as at the start of the new financial or calendar year). Yet another payment facility that can be offered is Bartercard. Some practices offer loans for treatment through third party financial providers. The flexibility of different payment plans can make goods or services more accessible to customers in these challenging times.

“HOWEVER BEAUTIFUL THE STRATEGY, YOU SHOULD OCCASIONALLY LOOK AT THE RESULTS.” WINSTON CHURCHILL This quote definitely rings true in the planning and goal setting process – we must make sure our strategy is bringing in the desired results or we need to re-evaluate it quickly.
IS YOUR BUSINESS ELIGIBLE FOR FUNDING?
As they say, “A fool and his money are soon parted.” Money and Me: If you save five dollars a day, in 43 years you will have one million bucks. When the funds hit the J curve, you may well and truly have more than that in the bank. So at least let’s help the next generation hit this goal. I wish I knew this 20 years ago, but then it’s never too late to start! What we need to be careful about is thinking we have disposable income that can be thrown away. It really is discretionary income and we should be looking at investing 10 per cent of our income each week. “You are today where your plans of the past have brought you. You will be tomorrow where today’s plans will take you.” George Faddoul
Any small business owner leading up to the end of this financial year needs to seek professional advice. Too often, small business owners make mistakes that could easily have been avoided by seeking the right advice. Here’s an example of the confusion around this tax time: last year a small business could write off depreciating assets costing less than $6500. “The rules are no longer clear under the Abbott government – they plan to reduce the immediate write-off down to $1000; however it is not yet passed and may not be passed until July, and may then be backdated to January. (Information sourced from Smarter Magazine). Confused? Small business owners work hard for their money and time is not regarded as a valued commodity – it is part and parcel of the job. Where you can, I suggest you make use of the Chamber of Commerce educational forums around the Coast, small business courses and employ an excellent small business accountant. This way, money and you will not soon be parted!

RESTRUCTURING YOUR BUSINESS? A business may choose to restructure its operations to improve efficiency and productivity. Restructuring will, however, create multiple employment issues which should be investigated by a prudent employer prior to implementation. An example is the obligation to consult in compliance with an applicable federal modern award. The obligation to consult will be initiated when the employer has made a definite decision to introduce changes in production, program, organisation, structure or technology that are likely to have significant effects on employees. The model consultation clause defines significant effects to include changes in the composition, operation or size of the employer’s workforce or in the skills required to undertake the work, the elimination or diminution of job opportunities, promotion opportunities or job tenure, the alteration of work hours or locations and the restructuring of jobs, including a termination of employment. When engaging in the consultation process, the employer must discuss the following:
Not sure of your next move?
• the proposed changes • the effects the changes are likely to have on the employee • the measures to avert or mitigate the adverse effects of such changes on the employee • and give prompt consideration to matters raised by the employee and/or their representatives in relation to the changes For the purposes of the discussion, the employer must provide all relevant information about the changes to the employee in writing, although the employer is not required to disclose confidential information. Although it is ultimately the employer who has the final right to make a decision about a redundancy, the stated purpose of the consultation provisions contained in the modern awards is to provide the employee an opportunity to suggest measures to alleviate or minimise any negative effects of the proposed restructure, and to assist management by exploring alternatives.
Devine Legal specialises in problem solving for employees and employers. Mitch Devine
A failure to consult in accordance with the terms of an applicable modern award: • will inhibit an employer’s ability to defend an unfair dismissal claim on the basis of a genuine redundancy • may expose the employer to a prosecution in the Federal Court or Federal Magistrates Court, resulting in an injunction or penalties Where a restructure results in the termination of employment, further industrial complexities arise concerning the obligation to make a severance payment, the selection of employees for dismissal, the relevance of any workplace policies and depending upon the number of employees affected, the necessity to notify a relevant union and Centrelink. Further, there are certain types of restructures which are prohibited by the Corporations Act. A proposed restructure for the purpose of saving money can very easily end up costing a business much more, if it is not carefully considered. *Warning: The content of this article is in the form of an academic paper and the opinions expressed herein are generalised. CLASSROOMS OF THE FUTURE – TRANSFORMING LEARNING What a long way we’ve come from what was once viewed as the traditional school classroom. We are now educating students for the 21st century to be active thinkers, who are able to collaborate with learning partners and think and problem solve critically, while displaying creativity across a variety of contexts. Traditional classrooms in the 20th century were dominated by one type of furniture design, usually arranged in a straight line, with classes predominantly teacher and blackboard focused. In the late 20th century, digital technologies were added to the classroom in the forms of interactive or conventional whiteboards and a handful of desktop computers – but these additions rarely altered the dynamics of the teaching style within the classrooms. There are exciting changes afoot for our 21st century learners. Our modern day classrooms are being transformed into stimulating and colourful, student-centred, flexible environments. These learning spaces are creating the ideal environment for active group learning, as well as teacherdirected and individual learning, allowing for responsive flexibility to suit student needs and the daily learning requirements of the classroom. Without doubt, current research is pointing to the fact that peer collaboration (team work) and feedback as a result of this collaboration are strategies which have the greatest impact on improving learning outcomes (Hattie 2009). Flexible table groupings and seating arrangements lead to more discussion, active student learning and frequent informal teacher assistance, with students in these environments outperforming those who were taught the same course in a traditional classroom (Whiteside, Brooks and Walker 2010). Research shows (Gee 2006) that 21st century classrooms need to: n
be welcoming and familiar
n
be flexible
n
allow adequate space for movement
n
allow for student and teacher ownership
n
enable changeable focal points within the space
n
n
have mobile displays that support collaboration and teaching with digital media
anticipate future needs
The challenge for schools is to ensure that learning environments continue to evolve in response to the needs of current and future learners. With these exciting changes taking place in our classrooms right now, we can be assured that we are providing the dynamic environment required for the 21st century learner. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kathryn Wilkinson is a primary school teacher and aspiring educational leader at Sunshine Coast Grammar School. Beginning her career at a small two teacher school, Kathryn quickly learnt the importance of catering for the diverse needs of each student within the classroom. Since joining the Sunshine Coast Grammar team in 2007 Kathryn has taught across the early years of the primary school and has proven herself to be a leader of classroom innovation. Kathryn is passionate about teaching her students to be active thinkers who question, wonder and hypothesise about their world around them. As an early years teacher she sees her role as to ignite each student’s passion for learning and encourage them to become inquisitive lifelong learners. BUSINESS MATTERS 39

HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AS A GP AND THINKING OF STARTING OUT ON YOUR OWN? One of the biggest decisions you will face is whether to go it alone or buy into an existing practice. Here are some of the issues you need to consider to help you make an informed decision.
Need an accountant who specialises in medical + Allied Health?
Start fresh or join an established practice? Joining an existing practice with an established patient database means that the time required to build your cash flow position is shorter. Because the business has already invested in its growth, the owners will expect you to purchase equity or contribute to the costs in some way. Depending on the business relationship, it will often be in the form of a percentage of fees being retained or contributed toward the business operation, the purchase of goodwill or sharing the liabilities of the entity. There is no substitute for good advice. You are an expert in your field, we are experts in ours and we are here to help you when it comes to getting professional financial advice, and ensuring you get an optimal outcome for your new practice. The right set-up is absolutely essential It is common knowledge that a new business has more cash going out than coming in during the start-up period. In this phase your business is most vulnerable. Start with the end in mind and get these three key things right. 1. The right business structure
Sole trader, practice trust or other structure. And what about GST?
2. A flexible finance arrangement Use the equity in your own home, business loans, super to purchase practice rooms, vendor finance or line of credit facilities. 3. Appropriate contracts or terms of engagement Percentage of revenue, contracted hours, fixed fee agreement, cost sharing arrangements, key person and buy-sell agreements and purchase of existing practice rooms. There are a number of ways you can structure your practice, and getting it right from the beginning will give you more flexibility and tax planning opportunities. If you’re buying into an existing practice, the terms and conditions must be agreed to prior to starting, and with the structure in mind. This will give you great traction in the early stages of a new practice, allowing for continued growth, and can mean the difference between success and failure.

MONEY AND YOU The most money you spend as an employer, in the majority of businesses, is on wages. Therefore, employers need to carefully consider what to pay their staff. We work with a lot of organisations that find the minefield of setting wage rates confusing and frustrating. We recommend the following in identifying what to pay staff: Firstly, establish which industrial instrument employees are covered by in your workplace: • modern award • enterprise agreement If your workplace is covered by a modern award or an enterprise agreement, review the classifications and the pay rates that apply, including junior or trainees rates, and ensure you are paying these rates or above. If you pay above these rates and want this to be an inclusive rate, ensure the industrial instrument allows for this and that you follow any requirements for documenting an inclusive rate in a legally compliant manner. • award free If there is no modern award or enterprise agreement that covers your employees, they will be award free and you need to ensure they are paid above the minimum wage. The current full-time minimum wage is $16.37 per hour or $622.20 per week. Secondly, to be competitive as an employer, you can’t always rely on paying the rates you are legally required to pay. You often have to pay more to attract the best talent. So we recommend doing a market comparison for similar roles, in similar industries in a similar location, to understand what you are competing with in terms of wage rates. Thirdly, it isn’t always about money, so think about what you can offer to complement the pay rate with attractive conditions or other forms of reward and recognition. Finally, the Fair Work Commission reviews the minimum wage each year, which impacts on the rates found within any industrial instrument. Any changes are usually effective from the 1st of July, so this is a date to mark in your calendar to ensure you are paying staff correctly. Even if you believe you are already paying above award rates, it is critical to check you are still compliant following the Fair Work Commission’s review.

partnership matters PETER CHICO JONES | PARTNERS INSYNC
PARTNERSHIP PLAN – WHAT’S A PARTNERSHIP PLAN? According to Guy Biran of JM Partners, a Melbourne accountant with over 20 years experience with business partnerships, 70-80 per cent of partnerships fail within three to five years and of them, 80-90 per cent were caused by a breakdown of the HUMAN relationship. For 20 years Guy watched as partners, filled with the romance of shared enthusiasm towards a common goal, came to him as they built their business, only to end up in financial and legal battles as they came again – this time to dissolve their business. The financial and emotional costs were enormous. Of course there were factors that stressed the partnerships – there always will be. Market trends, skills, strategy, marketing, administration and family involvement, to name a few, but these are essentially issues of growth and learning. These issues are necessary and should be harnessed to strengthen the partnership, not cause it to breakdown. Many of these partnerships could have worked and some should never have started, but had they completed a partnership plan, they would have saved an incredible amount of frustration, grief and loss. Partnership plans ultimately serve to bring greater clarity and understanding to the key human pieces of your business puzzle. They keep you and your partner on the same page, working towards the same goals by creating communication strategies that ground and guide you. A partnership plan is the most important document your business partnership requires. With it, you will build foundations that put you in sync with one another and allow you to experience the phenomenon of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.
BUILDING STRONG PARTNERSHIPS through Communication Understanding Strategies
Partnership plans should involve four basic steps: 1. Know Yourself Who are you bringing to the table? Not just the good bits, but also the bad and the ugly. Time to be honest: What are your fears and aspirations, your beliefs and values, your money style, your behavioural style? Are you open to personal growth? 2. Know Your Partner Do you really know your partner? I doubt it. Do you spend time listening to them with a view to truly understanding them? Not to find strengths or weaknesses, but to understand and appreciate them?
Partners Insync offers consulting, coaching and training for startup and established business partner relationships.
3. Know Your Communication Styles What does your partner need when they are under pressure? Does your communication support or alienate them? Because remember…COMMUNICATION IS NOT ABOUT YOU. 4. Know your Vision This is the fun part. This is where you and your partner get to create a business that serves you and the community. Ideally, your partnership plan should be done before you start trading, but at least before you bring out the daggers. The blame game is a good indication that it’s time to pause and rebuild the foundations – if both parties are willing. It’s never too late.

WATER AND YOU Scientists have found out that the body does not heal in an acidic state it only heals in an alkaline state. And unfortunately most of our town water is either neutral or acidic. Even, rainwater that is often seen to be wonderful for us is on the acidic side. So drinking town water or rainwater will quench your thirst but not necessarily improve your health. But that is not the end of the health story when it comes to water. If you are looking for longevity and optimal health, then you need to consider whether the water you are drinking is energised and structured or in a dead state.
The best places in nature to find a perfect water molecule is next to a stream where the water is tumbling over rocks. This vortexing action creates a perfectly energised and structured water molecule. So is it any wonder that the five places on Earth where people have extremely good health - where most live to be over 100 years old: Northern Pakistan’s Hunza Valley as well as Ecuador, Peru, The County of Georgia (in Russia) and Mongolia, all just happen to be beside or near naturally running mountain streams? If you don’t have the luxury of living near a beautiful running stream of pure water, don’t fear, as there are products on the market that emulate this action found in nature whilst simultaneously alkalizing water to produce H2O that is perfect for the human body, pet consumption and garden growth.
How Safe Is Your Drinking Water? WATER IS OUR LIFE BLOOD Research conducted by the World Health Organisation shows that over 80% of diseases are caused by poor quality water. The Town Water that we drink can have over 700 harmful agents and over 20 are carcinogenic and 18 have proven cancer-promoting effects. And your skin will absorb around 1.5 litres of water when you have a shower, taking all of these agents directly into your body. Boiling water DOES NOT eradicate heavy metals, cyanide, arsenic compounds, nitrite and other harmful agents. Phperfect provides THE EDGE with Phperfect Energised, Structured water to every tap & shower in your home! We’ve got your pool covered too. The best advice I could give someone about money is to be careful whom they get advice from. Everyone loves to give it, so before you take advice from someone, look at who they are and what they have – and if that’s where you want to be, take their advice. Most people get their money advice from a bank, and that really is like asking a mouse where to put the cheese. A bank’s first priority is to make money for their shareholders, not you. So if you want to know how to make money, how to save money or how to invest money – find someone who is successfully doing exactly what it is you want to do and ask his or her advice… it works. Chris Childs.

What separates John from the rest is the fact he is absolutely free to customers, as he is paid by lenders. By this, it means John can source your loan and obtain the same special discount and offers you’d receive if you were to approach that particular lender yourself.
He is also quite flexible with when and where he is able to see customers, as he can see them at a time that suits them – at their home or at John’s office in the beautiful Glasshouse Mountains. We asked John for his top three money making and money saving tips:
1. Shop around for a loan by using a broker. In doing so, you will save money through having someone evaluate your position to see which lenders you could actually borrow through, and from that list, who has the cheapest and most appropriate product for your needs.
2. Simply make repayments weekly or fortnightly. You could save $60,000 in interest on a $350,000 loan and five years off the term.
3. Make higher repayments than required. This will clear the loan faster and future-proof your loan.

The Chamber of Commerce & Industry Queensland (CCIQ) supports State Treasurer Tim Nicholls’ third State Budget, describing it as a better balance between shoring up Queensland’s financial footing and investing in future economic growth. CCIQ made specific Budget submissions to the State Government and is pleased to see many of its recommendations have come to the fore. The Sunshine Coast has received significant government funding for education, health and community services, transport and roads, and other infrastructure projects, as announced on Tuesday.
Tim Nicholls also announced $768 million to upgrade sections of the Bruce Highway. The State and Federal Governments will contribute $177.3 million in 2014-15 for the $590 million upgrade of the Cooroy to Curra section of the highway, between Cooroy Southern Interchange and Sankeys Road, due for completion in late 2016. There will be a further $80.3 million from the Commonwealth for the $195 million program of interchange upgrades between Caboolture and Caloundra, and $24.5 million to begin stage one of the $1.13 billion Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway ‘six laning’ works, including two new interchanges. The State Government will also spend $12.1 million of up to $23.1 million in the next year on education facilities as Meridan State College, Pomona Campus of Noosa District State High School, and Morayfield, Narangba Valley and Redcliffe State High Schools. Other major announcements for the Sunshine Coast included: n
The health spend for 2014-15 has gone up 6 per cent to $13.6 billion, with the Sunshine Coast receiving the largest chunk, with $369.8 million going towards the new Public University Hospital. That money will continue the building of the $1.87 billion hospital at Kawana and its Skills, Academic and Research

$11.3 million to continue the SunCoast sub-transmission powerline project $10.7 million to ensure water quality at North Pine Water Treatment Plant $2.2 million to relocate Coolum Police Station $1.6 million to complete the auxiliary fire and rescue station at Pomona
The Bruce Highway upgrades will provide significant lengths in addressing capacity restraints enabling commerce, freight logistics and easier commuter journeys. Overall, the 2014 Budget, combined with results from the recent Westpac Group CCIQ Pulse Survey for the March Quarter, which showed business confidence remained optimistic on the Sunshine Coast, forecasting positive business conditions, sales and revenue, and profitability levels this year means good news for the region.

such as restraining exports and boosting imports. Another reassuring message can be drawn from the Minutes of the RBA May Monetary Policy Meeting. They point to the positive effect of the current low interest climate on the housing market and building industry. This pick-up in domestic demand is progressively expected to flow through to stronger non-mining investment and employment, and therefore a higher GDP. So circling back to the interest of Sunshine Coast businesses, around 65 per cent of us have an annual turnover of less than $500,000. With that in mind I assembled data showing the volume of business loans of less than $100,000 by financial institutions over the last 15 years (see Chart). The dramatic impact of the GFC is quite obvious in the period 2008-2009, 50 ISSUE 62

ARE YOU CHARGING WHAT YOU ARE WORTH? I read in a newsletter recently, “Someone has to be the most expensive, so it may as well be you. But if you’re going to be the most expensive you have to be the best.” This resonated with me, as I see many a business having the strategy of being the cheapest and really struggling.
Being the best covers a lot of ground. Here are six key steps:
6. Make it personal – do the follow-
1. The shift has to start internally – if you have a cheap mindset you need to replace that with a quality mindset. Nothing will happen if you don’t make this internal shift.

2. Be absolutely aware of what your competitors are offering and work out how you can make your offer not just a little better, but extraordinarily better.
changes. You have to keep coming
3. Leverage your past successes, years in operation, number of clients, types of clients, amount sold, awards – anything that adds to your credibility (maybe even write a book). 4. Become great at selling yourself – and make sure that your team are great at selling. Sell with confidence and pride and don’t be afraid of pointing out why you are more expensive than your competitors. 5. Be generous with your customers – exceed their expectations at every turn.
up phone calls, give gifts, remember the important people they are. Now, a word of warning here. You can’t just start charging more and expect your existing customers to pay if nothing back to the term, ‘be the best’. As you proceed you will lose customers, but don’t worry – these are the ones with a ‘cheap mindset’ that you need to lose. The company has a suite of water systems designed for the home and pool, along with a travelling system for people on the go, along with a range of bottled water.
The EDGE by Phperfect revitalises the body for optimal health and mental capacity, improves family health, and helps eliminate toxins in the body. The devices balance and soften water whilst at the same time energetically neutralizing toxins and heavy metals. The addition of an alkalising machine creates water that is perfectly PH balanced with antiaging properties, with users marvelling at the improvement to joint and muscle pain. The EDGE devices refresh and prevents scum in showers and baths, removing existing calcium and aragonite deposits and preventing and removing corrosion in pipes, water heaters, dishwashers, water heating systems, ice makers, etc. Clients using the system report a reduction in odours around and in bathrooms and toilets and a great improvement in overall skin and hair condition whilst preventing dry itchy skin. Pets also thrive on Phperfect water and customers have found that plants and gardens are hydrated with less water with greener, lusher lawns needing less fertilizer.
‘OUR PLANET IS OUR BUSINESS’ “This is only the beginning’ said David; ‘we have several other products in development, including a beauty line, a health supplement grouping and some others we will unveil as time goes on.”

Bartercard: helping businesses grow on the Sunshine Coast for over 22 years Thanks Bartercard for the last four years. I have bought so many fantastic things on Bartercard including tickets to motivational speakers, holidays, computers, even a pedigree kitten. I pay rent on Bartercard and just recently purchased a property paying the deposit on Bartercard. I can honestly say it has been great for my business. Thanks again for your service and always smiling demeanour.
The more we investigate the opportunities in Bartercard the more doors open, especially within the hospitality sector. Taking the time to better understand the Bartercard system has shown us how to access revenue previously lost in room nights that would otherwise have expired valueless. Bartercard for us simply means more business.

I’m a firm believer in the concept of bartering and saving cash for better uses and I believe that using Bartercard has helped us to keep ahead of the competition and improve our business. We now primarily use Bartercard to win cash contracts as it’s an effective method to close a deal.
I use Bartercard trade dollars to satisfy my travel bug, but I do recognise the value of using them in a way that benefits me financially. I spend trade dollars on services for my rental property that are tax deductible and also allows me to offer a well maintained property to maximise cash rental returns

MONEY AND YOU: WAKE UP! What does money really represent to you? Do you think it’s the answer to all your problems? That if you had more money you would be happy? According to research outlined in Psychology Today, it turns out money is important generally for a feeling of life satisfaction – but not happiness! Happiness, it turns out, is far more complex and involves doing things with friends and having purpose and meaning in your life. However, this is a great time to review your relationship to money and your perceptions, beliefs and stories around money and you. Do you deserve it? Do you have enough? Are you constantly wanting more but never believing you will have it? Do you have old stories running around in your head from your parents? Did your parents have a fear around lack of money – or losing what they had? Or never having enough? Those fears may well be lurking inside you. Today is the day to look deeply inside and be honest about your real feelings about money. Check out your beliefs around your capacity to earn money; whether you believe you deserve to have a lot of money or lots of good things in your life, whether you are living with a poverty mentality or one of faith and trust. Mind you, you can trust and be stupid with spending. So the trick is to truly believe money is coming your way and be sensibly generous.

How to Overcome the Monday Morning Blues by Paul Barrs
When retirement finally comes, I’m going to remember those Monday mornings where I often struggled to pull my torpid old bones from under the covers and into life, to whatever job I was doing at the time. Although I’m far from retirement now, I can say that I do remember them like they were a distant memory. It’s been 15 years since I’ve had to ‘do that’ for someone else, and no day has been the same since. The thing is, whilst the days may be different, Monday mornings are still the same – and sometimes it’s just too damn hard to get moving. Know what I mean? So here’s what I’m doing this Monday morning, and what I do most Monday mornings to start the week with a bang. Perhaps you’ll get a few take-aways from it.
I start the day with some light exercise. I rarely get into it too heavily in the mornings, simply because this old body ain’t what it used to be – but I understand that a fit body builds a fit mind. The better shape my body is in, the better shape my mind is in and the better decisions I can make, products I can create and so on. Next I head down to a favourite coffee shop with a copy of last week’s and this week’s to-do list. I review last week’s checklist and see if anything needs to be carried over. Then slowly, between measured sips of my morning brew, I start to design my action list for the coming five days. At the top of my list is a place for consulting /coaching clients. I have a special place for these people as I am working with them directly and
ARE YOUR CARPETS MAKING YOU SICK?
need to make sure that I’m on top of things for them, creating separate lists of things for them to do. I also have a great CRM (I use Salesforce) which handles all my client notes followups, action plans, record keeping and so on. Next thing on my list is to OPEN my follow up action planner… Sidebar: I’ve learnt that 90 per cent of all potential business that a business could earn is LOST because they don’t FOLLOW UP! To be successful in the running of any business, you need to determine where your bread and butter comes from. This is the income that we generate that pays our bills, our wages and our staff. It’s the stuff that no matter what happens in the economy, we’re still going to have to pay if we want to keep our doors open.

feature It’s vitally important to any business to communicate with your people and hopefully have them communicate back with you. It’s always a good idea to ASK.
One of the things I do every morning is look at my bread and butter income. I want to be sure that I’m on top of it, that I’m aware of any holes in it and can see the big picture at a moment’s notice.
The last two areas of my own custom list are creation and content. This is where I make plans for the creation or updating of my training programs. For me, this is the lifeblood of my business; it’s what I’ve been doing since day one. And while I firmly believe that we must serve our paying customers first, I know that without new products to sell, my business lives under a glass ceiling. Future growth depends on future development.
Remember, right now I’m just writing my list. It’s Monday morning and I’ll spend an hour writing my list while planning the week to come in my mind. Next I look for opportunities to make new connections. I understand that new relationships can often take months to develop. These are the cream on the jam scones and well worth looking after. Next on my list is communication. While it may seem similar to connection, it’s not. It’s different because it’s not targeted to specific individuals. It’s planning for my newsletter, my YouTube channel and my social media. It’s getting the message out in order to bring people in. This is also a vital part of the building of any business, but like all things in balance, I schedule time for it and get it done. I see communication more as keeping in touch in a general way with ‘my people’ – you, whoever you are reading this, with my affiliates, with my followers.
Imagine how these ideas could benefit you and your business, even if you were to review them just once a month! Most people fail in business because they see only the now or the never. Others dream so large they forget that the rewards of tomorrow come from the efforts of today. You cannot have one without the other. It’s all about balance. So when you hit the ground running next Monday morning, do it with expectation and anticipation of something great coming your way. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

This innovation and vision has led to their development of specialisedcomponents for the ever growing Caravan and Truck Body Industries. “By investing in Research and Development we have been able to achieve a product that is Lighter, Stronger and all round Smarter – one day all components will be built this way!” said Dave when asked about what he has learnt from this transition. l a n o s r e P t e Let’s G
with Personnel Specialist Haycroft Workplace Solutions
When Haycroft Workplace Solutions founding director made the decision to retire, a few long term employees were so passionate about the business that they decided to take it on themselves. This was finalised just six months ago. The four partners have all been affiliated with the business for over 10 years. They have a real drive to encourage business growth and development of SMEs. One of the owners, Tatiana Porter, speaking to Vickie Magic from BM said,
“We want to change the perception that big companies ruin it for the little guy, and we do this by helping employers understand their options. Our tagline is ‘keeping employment simple.’ The company was founded on this principle and it has never changed. We support employers.”
Tatiana shares her Top three money making/saving tips: 1. Know the value of your time Most SMEs focus on the bottom line or cash flow, and don’t consider what they lose in time. (eg doing your own bookkeeping or payroll). By freeing up time from mundane and time-consuming tasks you can increase your productive time, which could include increasing your client base, developing a new product, refining a service or anything else that builds your business. 2. Know the cost of worry Worry tends to be all-consuming and can paralyse you. For a business owner real worry emerges when there is a consequence of financial ruin, but worrying doesn’t ease that. Assess your options, engage the right people, and deal with real problems as soon as you’re aware of them. The head in the sand approach seldom
Tatiana went on to say that she believed Haycroft were different from other HR companies because they have a team of experts who work in a variety of fields. They have people specialising in WHS, Industrial Relations, Employee Inductions, Payroll, Superannuation – in fact, any aspect of employment. This means that their clients have the benefit of a team, but it also provides greater creativity when finding solutions to employment issues, as the team consider them from various aspects. works and usually allows things to get worse. Better still, undertake a risk assessment and have a Plan B. 3. Know your budget Simple and obvious, but many people and businesses are quite distressed when they receive a bill. We all know that we will have to pay for electricity, insurance, and superannuation if you are an employer, so budget for this. It isn’t really a surprise. In conclusion we asked Tatiana why people choose Haycroft Workplace Solutions. “It’s simple,” she said, “our people care and provide great service. We all encourage and enjoy working with local businesses and want our clients to be successful – we support our clients.” www.haycroft.com.au

MAGIC MOMENTS
with Dranko Magic It’s EOFY time again, time to let your hair down and party – if only that was the case. Blink and you’ll miss it, that’s right – half a year has gone by, and by this time next month we’ll start thinking about Christmas. It’s true that we would all like to have more money or more cash flow through our business and in our lives. Sometimes I think we all forget the most valuable asset we have, our life.
Because at the end of the day business matters, of course, but life matters more. As most of you may know, my mother passed away early this year. My youngest sister Jamaica has three kids and the most wonderful husband, David, a girl could ask for. David has just been diagnosised with cancer. You may ask, “Why he is telling us this?” The point I’m trying to make is no matter how well we are doing and how much money we may be making or trying to make, or how much we can buy, or how many things we have, the price of our life doesn’t have a dollar value on it. As we all think about our future, we sometimes forget to think about the present. If you feel like something is just not right, go get it checked out. If you still feel it’s not right after that, go get a second opinion.
We can all work harder or longer, or do more and more towards our future, but if we don’t look after ourselves and see someone or talk to someone when we don’t feel right, we’re not really looking after our future at all. Because at the end of the day business matters, of course, but life matters more. Until next time, don’t sweat the small stuff. Don’t worry, be happy. Dranko Magic is the other half of Business Matters Magazine. He is our Operations Manager; this role includes professional photography, looking after all the invoicing, accounts, debt collection and also the delivery of the magazine.
