The single most relevant quote I always, always, go back to is ‘it is not the situation, but our reaction to it’

What motivates you? We are all different in finding that thing that motivates us to do the absolute best that we can, that thing that helps us get up every day and strive towards excellence, that lights us up, makes us smile. Some days you have to admit it isn’t as easy as others, that’s because we are human, that’s because things happen around us, sometimes out of our control that sometimes sees us dropping the ball, the most important thing is that we pick it up and run with it as soon as we possibly can. The single most relevant quote I always, always, go back to is ‘it is not the situation, but our reaction to it’. It really doesn’t matter what happens in our lives or in our business, (not saying these situations are not important), but at the end of the day the thing that makes the difference is how we react. Once we learn to control our reactions, we can control our level of happiness and our motivation. The first step is to always ask ourselves the question. Is the way I am reacting here going to help me? Will this thing, problem, situation, really be of relevance twelve months from now? Is it something worth getting my nappy in a knot about? Stepping back for just a second and removing ourselves from it, sometimes gives us the opportunity to laugh and say, “Mmm that was close.” Who inspires you? What is it about that person that you are inspired by? Have you heard of ‘Be-Do-Have’? I love this, it is kind of ‘fake it till you make it’, but really it is, practice the features or actions of the thing that you want (or the person you want to be like) be that person, do the actions they would do, over and over and pretty soon through practise you become more and more like them. For me that is being a size twelve person, doing the actions of the size twelve person, exercising like they would, eating like they would. I don’t have to be unhappy waiting for something to happen (I will be happy when I am size twelve for example), I can have that feeling right now by pretending I already am that and doing the actions of the person that is. Try this, it really does work.

TAFE Queensland East Coast is making great happen for local businesses on the Sunshine Coast. In a bold move for our organisation, Sunshine Coast TAFE has merged with neighbouring institute Wide Bay TAFE. The most exciting part of this change is our organisation can now draw on the combined knowledge of the entire region to provide customised training and education for our local businesses to improve employability and outcomes for our community.

To help improve our business services, TAFE Queensland East Coast recently launched an engagement project to ask our community, businesses and industry members where you see our strengths, weaknesses and identify improvements we can make to meet your needs in the future.

We have held over 100 in depth conversations with businesses from throughout the region, as well as conducted an extensive stakeholder survey, which has enabled us to reshape our services to meet your demands. We have built solutions to help business owners through: • Growth pains

• Workforce capability development

While our name may have changed and our footprint has grown, we remain committed to delivering solutions to help to grow our region in line with current industry trends to meet the demands of both local and national skill shortages.

If we have missed you and you would like to participate in our survey or you would like to have a conversation with us to enable us to work better with you please contact our Engagement Officers. when you feel that your work is being done not only to get more clients or raise the bottom line, but is making a difference for the greater good, you’re feeling inspired.

Not Mutually Exclusive Understanding that motivation and inspiration are indeed two different phenomena does not mean, however, that they are mutually exclusive – in fact, they often complement one another in a sort of Yin-Yang relationship. They are opposing forces that need to work together to accomplish great things – inspiration is internal and motivation external; motivation is the push and inspiration the pull. Inspiration comes before motivation, and once inspired, you will not only motivate yourself, but others. Being inspired is literally being ‘in the spirit’ and being raised to a new awareness and consciousness. When you are connected in that way, it shines all around you like a beacon, and you cannot help but inspire others. Staying inspired is a life-long journey. It’s been said that when you’re motivated you grab onto an idea and run with it – when you’re inspired, the idea grabs a hold of you. Motivation can lead you to your goals, inspiration toward your passion – and together, they can help you achieve your destiny.

Many of us, especially when it comes to running a successful business, toss the words ‘motivation’ and ‘inspiration’ about interchangeably, as if they’re identical twins. Truth is they’re not the same thing, and you have likely experienced the difference between the two, even if you don’t know it.

Are you motivated localsuccess

to take your business to a new height?

It’s amazing the talent and expertise that can be found right here on the Sunshine Coast. Business Matters Magazine was extremely fortunate to talk to Jenny Brice, owner and founder of JB Consulting, located right here on the Sunshine Coast at her stunning Noosa venue.

leadership development and mentoring. Jenny’s roles have been varied as a HR professional and include working with other HR professionals to assist the development and enhancement of their human resources or organizational development, and change strategies which have been achieved by a variety of mediums.

Over 20 years ago Jenny Brice started her career in the HR industry, leading to the head of HR roles in large companies such as Bank of Queensland, Fuji Xerox, CSR Timber and CSR panels. Within these roles she was responsible for managing a number of portfolios made up of everything to do with people – paying them, industrial relations,

Prior to starting JB Consulting, Jenny had never been an official executive coach – however, due to the nature of the career path she had embarked on in the HR industry, it was basically what she had done her whole career. HR directors have to have honest conversations with senior managers, saying if something’s not okay, or not right – not just sugarcoating a decaying problem. Jenny had to be the voice of the people in the organization, just like the finance team has to be the voice of finance. The executive coaching side of things all began through a series of accidental, but fortunate events. One day, a friend of Jenny’s rang her and said, “Jenny, there’s this woman who I think you should coach”, and so she did. Then the woman recommended her to someone, who recommended her to someone else, who recommended her to someone else and suddenly Jenny realised, “This could be my business.” Shortly down the track, Jenny contacted a client in New Zealand regarding executive coaching and he said, “You live in Noosa! Wow, I could come up for a coaching session in the afternoon and then go to Noosa!” That’s when Jenny thought, “I can build a coaching retreat at our house,” which she suggested to her husband Greg. So the idea started on 7 March and by 7 June everything was done and dusted. Proof that Jenny can help go from idea to reality, that all it takes is the right strategy and implementation to make things happen NOW. JB Consulting allows for the flexibility of clients visiting their property for coaching sessions and to stay for a few days, which can double as a holiday in Noosa, or alternatively Jenny can visit the client in the location of their choice and follow up via Skype/phone call. In addition to this, Jenny designs and delivers leadership modules for organizations, assists with change discussions and facilitates a variety of workshops based on the needs of the particular organization.

One of Jenny’s favourite quotes is, “People need something to believe in, someone to believe in and someone to believe in them.” We asked Jenny what her point of difference is at JB Consulting. She said, “It is definitely the uniqueness of the conference facility that I’ve been able to develop, it’s totally different to any other conference centre. You can go to any conference venue anywhere, but you don’t get the peacefulness and the space for creative problem solving, creative product development or the facilitator included in the venue like you do at JB Consulting. When you’re really good at creating the environment to enable facilitation you get good outcomes, 10 ISSUE 63

even if an external facilitator is brought in. The beautiful environment is what enables people to go to that space. “Secondly, my experience is real, having been in different organisations, to allow this experience to grow at every possible angle. I understand what works and what doesn’t in an organisation and I’m exceptionally adamant that if something is going to be done, it’s going to be done well. Thirdly, I believe I am exceptionally good at influencing people, having managed teams of up to 30 people and taking out the award for best HR strategy in Australia and runner up in the best HR team. I have the ability to take academic knowledge and experience and write it in a way, and train it and educate it in a way that people can understand.” “Can you imagine what our organisational cultures would be like if we had such an aspiration? Coaching and mentoring, however, is not about being nice or the soft and fluffy stuff. It is about maximising people’s potential and encouraging discretionary effort for

the benefit of both the employees and the organisation.” Jenny Brice. Jenny says she’s very excited about the opportunity she’s been able to develop with this unique conference centre, as she is passionate about applying all the knowledge that she has about strategy and business to the strategy of this business. I believe this model of consulting is a real game changer. If you would like to be mentored and coached by leaders in a peaceful space for creative problem solving, creative product development or a great strategy, this beautiful retreat location could be the answer. Jenny is happy to be part of the conference, workshop or board meeting if you need a facilitator, or alternatively you can simply use the space with your own facilitators. When it comes to strategy, Jenny’s husband Greg is available as well. Greg’s experience and background certainly is not second to Jenny’s. Both have years of corporate experience that have potentially never been available in this environment here on the Sunshine Coast.

ADVERTORIAL

IRT Queensland

IRT In-Home Care services in demand In November IRT began a new chapter in the organisation’s 44 year history by officially launching In-Home Care services on the Sunshine Coast. IRT In-Home Care provides wellness and care solutions for clients within the comfort of their own home, while allowing them to be a part of the greater IRT Lifestyle and Care family.

IRT Group is

one of Australia’s largest community based seniors lifestyle and care providers. We have been providing seniors lifestyle and care solutions for over 40 years. The multi-award winning IRT Group manages communities in more than 30 locations across NSW, ACT and QLD, providing care solutions to over 9000 customers.

Plenty on the horizon for IRT Master planning has already begun for a brand new community at Kawana Forest which will be known as IRT Woodlands. It will include a 60-bed care centre and 107 retirement lifestyle villas. IRT Queensland General Manager Lance Taylor says the inclusion of the IRT aged care facility at Kawana Forest is in keeping with Council’s principles for positive ageing on the coast. “It couples with construction of Sunshine Coast University’s new $1.57 billion, 450-bed tertiary level hospital at Kawana, which, when in operation will save 10,000 local residents a trip to Brisbane each year to receive important medical services,” Mr Taylor said. The Sunshine Coast has a high proportion of seniors, and an estimated population growth from 312,000 in 2008 to approximately 500,000 in 2031.

Multi-million dollar construction activity continues Our lifestyle community in Buderim, IRT The Palms is getting bigger by the day. Local building firm Gauld Project Services has now completed work on 47 villas during the first four stages of expansion within the community, and work on the newest 20 homes in Stages 5 and 6 is now underway. When all the work is finished, IRT The Palms will provide 187 seniors’ lifestyle homes in the Buderim area. The full expansion is expected to be completed by early 2015. Existing residents are happy to see works progressing on the completion of the remaining land, and can’t wait to meet their new neighbours. To find out more call 07 5456 1300 or log onto irt.org.au.

Motivation is like eating,

YOU HAVE TO DO IT EVERY DAY! By Vickie Magic What motivates you? Who inspires you? What makes you smile? What makes you happy? When you think about your life, are you who you want to be right now? Who has been a major influence in your life? I know for me my Dad taught me from a pretty young age that I could be, do or have anything I wanted for myself, and that all of that started with my own belief in myself. If I didn’t truly think I was capable of whatever it was, then no matter how much someone else did, it was more than likely not

going to happen. So he taught me to believe in myself and believe that I could achieve whatever I wanted for my life. So how do you go from one mindset to another? If you didn’t grow up believing in yourself or believing you could be, do or have whatever you wanted for your life, how do you change that? Can you change that now? You may not have been as fortunate as me, or maybe you were, but things happen and things change and our mindset does too. There are tools we can learn and then practise that can actually make our belief system the way that we would all love for it to be. There is definitely a lot to be said for looking for the good. I can understand why my husband sometimes shakes his head at me when I’m constantly looking for the good in people – I don’t think he used to understand that this is one of my tools for my own motivation. I can imagine he probably finds it a bit annoying sometimes. When he might be voicing something about someone who has upset or frustrated him, I could imagine someone pointing out good things about them a touch annoying. I always say, “Yes, but they are this or they are that,” something good about them. I think he’s

become used to it and has probably given up trying to make me side with what’s wrong. When we look for what’s wrong we definitely find it, and when we find it, we then think about it, and then we tell someone else, and then what happens is that something grows and becomes so big that sometimes it actually can even consume us, and if not entirely, then for every woken hour. We all know someone who is, let’s just say, unhappy – they have a situation that has happened to them that has made them mad and they tell everyone who will listen. Some of those people buy into it and feed it, and when you feed something it usually grows, so this something just gets bigger and bigger and bigger. We have all had that friend (some of us have even been that friend) who has maybe come through a bad break-up, or a bad situation and all they do is talk about it – they did this, they did that, blah blah blah blah blah. We pretend to listen at first and we even go along with it, but when it happens over and over and over and they NEVER talk about anything else, we can see that they are being destroyed by this THING. They are feeding it, feeding it, feeding it, by talking about it over and over, and we are feeding it too, if we let them. So don’t let them. (Easier said than done, I hear you say!) What can you do, what should you do? For starters, change the subject and talk about something good. Remember some happy time for them and talk about that, and every time they go back to it, just don’t buy in. Don’t completely ignore them of course, listen and say, “Mmmm,” but don’t agree and add to it in any way, shape or form. To support them you might say, “I see how much this is hurting you, but we are so lucky that we live in this amazing place,” or something equally as wonderful that you know they love, such as family, children or partner. From the flip side, if we are the person focusing on all the bad stuff in our own lives and being sad and unhappy, if we try (and in the beginning, it is try) to look for what’s right in our lives and stop focusing on what’s wrong, once again the old “what you feed grows” takes over and we start to see more of the good. And then we feed that and it grows – you get the picture. So the fact is that if you have lots and lots of stuff that you’re not really happy with in your

16 ISSUE 63

feature life, try looking for things that are good. If you can’t think of any, ask other people to help you. There is always some good stuff, and the more we look for it, the more we will find, and then we have to feed it and feed it and feed it, and while we are feeding it, we forget about feeding the bad. If we don’t feed the bad stuff, it will simply stop growing and when that happens we can start to become free. This is only one article, and Rome wasn’t built in a day of course; however, the more you practise and practise and practise this stuff, what starts to happen is that the down time, the time when you are feeling sad, angry, frustrated and confused, becomes less. Then the more and more and more and more you practise, the less and less and less and less it becomes. So step one, right here and now, take out a pen and paper and write down ten things that are amazing about your life. Then ten things that you totally appreciate. If it’s difficult, that’s okay. When you are done though, there is no way you can’t feel a little better than you did before you started. Motivation is just like food – just because you ate yesterday definitely does not mean

that you don’t have to eat today. We have to feed it daily to make sure that we stay in that good place. Because we’re human we’re going to drop the ball – we’re sometimes going to fall in a heap and sometimes go back to looking at, and being consumed by that bad stuff again. But once we have learnt and practised over and over the tools to help bring us out, what happens is that the time in between becomes less and less. Pretty soon, we find that we can actually snap our fingers, and at our own pace just pull ourselves out of the doldrums. When you first read this article, you may see it as a do-gooder article and say, “Oh yeah, she doesn’t have my shit,” or “Her life is amazing,” or “She hasn’t had this (insert your problem here) happen to her,” and maybe that’s true, although I can assure you I’ve had my share. But the thing is that it doesn’t matter what happens, it doesn’t matter how bad it is. I know people who have personally lost loved ones and it is never the situation, not ever, it is always the way we handle it that makes the difference to our lives. We can stay focused on the shit for as long as we choose, but if you choose not

to, then try this stuff. It works and the more you practise it, the more it works.

My goal, my passion, my purpose is to inspire you to want this for yourself and to learn and then practise the steps to make it happen. panache You’d think that Bec Holliday would have no time left in her day after

being a mum to four children, running the successful Fultilt Excavations business and a photography business, Be Beautiful Studio, but this local enthusiastic photographer is eager to prove otherwise, with the exciting announcement of the launch of her own business, Captured by Bec. “Rachael and I have had an amazing time working together at Be Beautiful Studio. I have learnt so much from her and wish her the very best with her new creative flair for tattooed models.” When asked what it is she loves about photography, Bec said, “I’m free when I’m photographing something, it allows me to unleash my creativity. It’s an addiction of sorts, and I do love what I am able to create.”

18 ISSUE 63

Bec’s passion for photography stems from her childhood, playing with any disposable camera she could get her hands on. “I couldn’t help photographing all day, I just loved the moment I got them developed – yes, that’s right, developed! The changes I could make with different lighting just amazed me.” Before she started working in a studio and learning all about her newfound passion for photography, her friends and family agreed they couldn’t keep her away from the camera.

Her new business Captured by Bec will be focused on capturing the images of real estate properties and children – two diverse topics. Bec is extremely skilled in producing quality property images, and her real estate knowledge has helped her to grasp the happy medium of images that draw the buyers in, but do not give away misleading concepts. “Agents hate it when photographers make rooms in a house look much bigger than they

actually are, as it sets the buyer up for disappointment. You have to make an image attractive, but honest.” With two children herself, and two step children, Bec understands the psychological aspect of children’s photography and the discomfort that children sometimes experience when in the care of an adult they don’t know. She understands how important it is to ensure they are comfortable and in a happy environment. “I like to become friends with the child first, gain their trust and ease their worry by giving them little games to play while they wait. Bubbles are my secret weapon!” Years of working in service industries have taught Bec that it’s vitally important to deliver a unique customer service experience. From first phone call to final images, Bec offers her clients a compelling experience with warmth, professionalism and expertise. “I own a business and work in an industry I’m so passionate about. I’m able to share my talents with my clients and I believe this is an honor not many people are able to have.” Bec loves to soak up information, ask questions, follow people closely to see how they would do something and then take what she’s learnt and experiment. “I don’t like to follow the rules and most of all I love to see people happy. I can’t wait to start sharing the images of my new journey.” www.capturedbybec.com

victor bimrose By Vickie Magic Victor Bimrose Accounting is a name that you may not have heard, their services include accounting, taxation, self managed superannuation funds (SMFS), business development, tax planning, business structures, sale or purchase of a business and due diligence. They also attend to their clients Business Activity Statements (BAS) Building Services Authority (BSA) and Tax Minimisation. After meeting and interviewing Victor I can say that this man and this firm are one of the local hidden treasures here on the Coast. They certainly don’t have their name up in lights, Victor himself is a humble yet impressive man. The local accounting firm has been around now for 18 years. Victor grew up in Sandgate, Brisbane and has been in accounting from the beginning. Studying accounting part-time at QUT (formerly known as QIT), Victor kickstarted his career whilst working for Deloittes for eight years during the day and studying at night for six years. After purchasing a house and living in Brisbane for a few years in the early 1980’s, Victor and his at the time girlfriend, now wife, Brenda, decided to travel overseas to work and live in London. The time over there was a great experience for the pair, earning good money with no responsibility, Brenda had a stable nursing career and Victor had the ability to adapt into different businesses accounting jobs, however after three years they realised it was time to come back. Settling down in Brisbane things were going smoothly but when Brenda was eight months pregnant with their second son in 1991, the family made the big move to the Sunshine Coast where Victor bought into a business in Nambour. After five years partnering with this business, Victor opened Victor Bimrose Accounting in 1996. It is a tribute to the firm that most of the staff members have been with the firm long term. In fact some have left, had families and returned. I asked Victor for some inside tips on how that can happen, how does he keep his team so happy and content, he said,

“I always wanted a business where I treated my staff the same way I wanted to be treated when I was an employee. I believe if you look after your team, they’ll look after your clients in the same way”. Victor said that they don’t normally advertise, they have a steady flow of clients who continually give them new referrals, so the business grows that way. 22 ISSUE 63

Introduction to LRPPGR

Creating a friendly and almost family environment in the workplace promotes loyalty amongst the team, every day at 10:30am, it’s pens down time for morning tea, which allows the team to talk to each other for 30 minutes a day and keep that intimacy of knowing what’s going on in one another’s life. Friday afternoon at 4:30pm, they stop for a drink or two to chat about the week that was and relax. A few times a year, the staff, their families, and their partners all get together and do activities to create a strong bond between all their family members. It is evident that this provides a great environment for longevity.

Being our motivation issue, I asked Victor;

What motivates you? “Having happy staff and happy clients is a very motivating thing for me, it gives me satisfaction that I am doing something right and being able to help others is a great feeling”. Who motivates you? “It may sound corny, but my wife, Brenda. A few years ago her and a friend competed in a Pinky Tri and ever since then, she has developed a passion for triathlons, last year she completed an Ironman event. I’m really proud of her, especially seeing first hand just how much training goes into that event”. A motivating story? “A few years back at the Royal Queensland Golf Club, Victor hit a hole in one. Just a week later whilst visiting Darwin, Victor ran into Charley Earp, Greg Norman’s former coach, and mentioned to him about the hole in one. Charley said, “Have you still got the ball?” to which Victor said, “Yes, why?” and Charley said, “Give it to me and I will have it mounted in a trophy,” and he did.” Your top business secrets to motivate us? “My advice to clients is that you can’t keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. If something is not working, change the business model. Another thing that we do at VBA is to return every phone call and email – although it doesn’t seem like much, it is something that clients definitely value. These basic fundamentals can really be a point of difference.” Favourite quote? “True wealth is discretionary time,” by Alan Weiss. I love this, as personally I didn’t want to have a company that took up all of my time. I had a goal to build a company that allowed me go out and watch the kids play sport, that I could sneak out and play golf on a Wednesday afternoon, it’s about balance, I know so many business owners that are very money rich but time poor, my advice is build a business you work on and not in.

Because Life Rhythm, Progressive Practice & Growth Reprogramming (LRPPGR) takes on a 4D approach to its self & the interaction it has with other businesses, we offer the Human & other service industries the idea & concept of movement for clients & themselves. Within these 10 Years of Human Services involvement, strategising & creating has evolved into these 14 services today. Mind you, we can take any subject & create a program for your niche market. business with Mark Jamieson

If you want an insight into the values and aspirations of the Sunshine Coast, council’s $509 million budget for 201415 is the perfect place to start. It’s much more than just numbers – it’s about people. It captures where we want to go and shows how we will get there. It’s a budget which takes us significant strides closer to achieving our vision to become the most sustainable region in Australia. A sustainable economy. A sustainable environment. A sustainable community. This budget is about giving the nearly 100,000 students in Sunshine Coast schools a chance to work here as well – to raise their families here and keep their connection with this region. In short, it’s about building confidence for a stronger community. The timing of this is all important. We have three massive projects underway or in the pipeline which have the potential

to transform this region for decades to come. The new health precinct rising in Kawana, the new city centre planned for Maroochydore and the international airport expansion would individually be game-changers; together they create a once-in-a-generation opportunity. We owe it to our kids and our grandkids to get this right – in many ways their futures depend upon it. The momentum on these transformational projects has started to pick up pace, and council must make sure it plays its part to keep the ball rolling. I don’t want to be someone who looks back in ten years from now and says, “Gee I wish we’d done more at the time.” We also need to think about where we have come from. Two years ago, this council was elected to take the region in a new direction, where the ultimate destination was a robust economy, more jobs, a healthy environment and a stronger community. We are well down the road to achieving all those things. Business confidence and building approvals are up, we had the fastest job growth in Queensland last year and we have purchased more than 400 hectares of land for future generations to enjoy. Those things don’t happen by accident. Council worked hard to attract new businesses and events – it introduced a Build and Benefit Scheme, overhauled

development applications, committed to the vision to make the Sunshine Coast the most sustainable region in Australia, developed the first truly collaborative Regional Economic Development Strategy and more recently, launched a new Planning Scheme and Corporate Plan. Put these things together and you have firm foundations for the future to build upon – and that’s what this budget will do. It’s about getting on with the job and building confidence for a stronger community. Full details of the budget can be found at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ sitePage.cfm?code=budget-1415

It’s about getting on with the job and building confidence for a stronger community. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson keeps BM readers up to date on what’s happening on the Coast.

OUT-OF-HOURS CONDUCT AND EMPLOYMENT Recently there has been considered focus and publicity concerning out-of-hours conduct of employees, and the ability of the employer to terminate the employment for that behaviour. The issue calls into direct focus the line between one’s private life and working obligations. In the decision of Rose v. Telstra Corporation Limited, the Australian Industrial Relations Commission provided some guidance on the issue. That case involved a fight between work colleagues occurring in the early hours of the morning after they had been out to dinner and were then drinking together at a nightclub. Upon returning to their accommodation a fight broke out, resulting in one of the employees being stabbed with a piece of glass from a window which had been broken in the scuffle. At the time of the incident neither party was on call for work duties and were not wearing the uniform of their employer. Mr Rose was terminated from his employment as a consequence of the conduct and he subsequently successfully sued for unfair dismissal. The Commission held that there was no relevant connection between the out-of-hours conduct and the employment, so as to enable the employer to rely upon that conduct to terminate the employment. The Commission held that behaviour occurring outside of work hours will only impact upon employment where it has a relevant connection to the employment, and referred to the following principles: • The conduct must be such that, viewed objectively, it is likely to cause serious damage to the relationship between the employer and employee; or • The conduct damages the employer’s interests; or • The conduct is incompatible with the employee’s duty as an employee. Contrast the subsequent decision of Dobson v. Qantas Airways Limited,

Mitch Devine

where again work colleagues found themselves in an altercation out of work resulting in the termination of employment. The catalyst for the quarrel arose when the parties were watching a television program “Australian Idol” during a work break and a disagreement evolved concerning the respective talent pool of Australia versus New Zealand. An altercation then occurred in the car park after the shift had ended. At the time of the altercation the employees were still attired in their employer’s uniform, and the incidents occurred within a short period of time after the end of their working hours and in very close proximity to the workplace. In those circumstances the Commission was prepared to find that there was a sufficient connection with the workplace to enable to the employer to discipline Mr Dobson for his conduct, and he was unsuccessful in pursuing an unfair dismissal claim. Accordingly, where the out-of-hours conduct of employees has relevant connection to the workplace, the employer may engage in a disciplinary process concerning same. With the availability and reach of social media, these issues are likely to become far more prevalent an issue for both employees and employers to consider. WARNING: The content of this article is in the form of an academic paper and the opinions expressed herein are generalised. The application of principles referred to herein can alter from case to case. No reliance should therefore be placed on the opinions expressed in this article without detailed consideration of the circumstances of the case in question.

RILEY JACKSON DEBT RELIEF HOTLINE

GET OUT OF DEBT WITH A DEBT AGREEMENT A debt agreement is a way for you to reduce your debt, freeze your interest and repay your unsecured provable debts. If you’re struggling with bad debt, you know how stressful it can be. Your creditors are chasing you for payment, you can’t seem to get on top of your bills and the stress is starting to affect other areas of your life, like your work and relationships. A debt agreement can make all that debt stress disappear. The Basics of a Debt Agreement A debt agreement is a contract between you and your creditors outlining a new repayment arrangement which is better suited to your circumstances. It should be negotiated by a professional who will work with you to determine how much you can afford to pay. From there they will approach your creditors and negotiate a new repayment arrangement. To enter into a debt agreement you should have at least $10,000 in unsecured debts. The Benefits of a Debt Agreement A debt agreement is one of the most effective ways of reducing your debt. Once it has been approved, you will be granted much needed time and grace to repay your debt without struggling with the stress. A debt agreement will reduce your overall debt so you are only paying a percentage of what you owe. It will also freeze the interest on all unsecured provable debts and creditors won’t be allowed to hassle you for repayments. Entering into a debt agreement will save you from having to declare bankruptcy, and the approval process is easy if you use a professional to negotiate the agreement.

Understanding the Consequences While a debt agreement can be your saving grace, there are a few things you need to consider before entering into one. Entering a debt agreement is considered a form of bankruptcy, so your name will be listed on the National Personal Insolvency Index. It will also be marked on your credit file for five years, which may impact your ability to borrow more money. However, people who are in a position to enter a debt agreement may already have defaults and judgements on their credit file. If you’re considering perusing this debt relief solution, you need to decide whether these consequences are worth having the freedom to repay your debt in peace. Remember, the best advice is to act quickly while you still have options available. *This is provided you met all repayments under the Debtstroyer Agreement on time and in full.

challenge us to excel in whatever endeavours we choose to undertake, or those who achieve extraordinary feats which one would have thought were verging on the impossible. I have always respected and still do respect such people in my life. However, I would like to take this opportunity to cast our minds back further on this topic. Some of the most motivating and inspiring moments in my life (like a lot of other people) have come at some of the lowest and darkest days of my life. In the final year of my specialist training in Melbourne, my beautiful wife and (at that stage) two children had moved back to Brisbane, due to the sale of the property we rented in Melbourne. Ten weeks before my research thesis was due for final submission, the professor supervising my research said that he ‘did not like’ the 45,000 words that I had written and that I needed to start writing again from scratch. It was an incredibly stressful time – trying to finish cases to present to examiners, trying to study for exams and starting to write a thesis again. I would not wish those 10 weeks of my life on my worst enemy.

The most profound quote that has remained with me over the last two decades is from the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He proclaimed, “The heights of great men reached and kept were not attained in sudden flight, but they while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.”

Where did I draw my inspiration and motivation to carry on during these challenging times? For me, it was lyrics and songs such as ‘The Fighter’ by Gym Class Heroes and Ryan Tedder, YouTube clips of everyday soldiers returning home from overseas deployment to surprise their loved ones and inspiring quotes or thoughts. The most profound quote that has remained with me over the last two decades is from the American poet Henry Wadsworth

PETER CHICO JONES PARTNERS INSYNC

MOTIVATION AND INSPIRATION It’s said that in essence only two things motivate us. One is the desire to move towards pleasure and the other is the desire to move away from pain.

It’s not nice to look at the possibility of a new relationship turning sour, and so many don’t. If indeed it does turn sour, these people are then ill-equipped to deal with it, grow through it and move on to a higher level of partnership.

My wife and I recently moved to the Sunshine Coast with our three year old girl and we were driven pure and simply by these two things. On one hand, we had to get out of inner city Melbourne – the busyness, the city air, the traffic. On the other, we knew in our hearts that we needed to be in an environment that felt open and expansive and was clean, warm and offered a slower, healthier lifestyle. The choice and required actions were easy.

The current estimates are that 70-80 per cent of partnerships split up within three to five years, and 80-90 per cent of those split because of a breakdown of the human relationship and poor initial agreements. Think about those numbers for a moment – odds are, it’s going to end poorly.

Business partnerships make decisions based on the pleasure and pain principle everyday. Going into a partnership can be about moving towards the pleasure of collaboration, doubling resources, sharing skills and perspectives, working with family or the depth of true mateship. It can also be about moving away from the pain of having to do everything yourself – it can be very overwhelming being a solopreneur. Either way it’s okay – I don’t believe that one way is better than the other. I do believe, however, that motivation is at its peak when you embrace both. My wife and I can testify to that.

Pre Pain:

“We’ll be right – it won’t happen to us.”

Post Pain:

“I didn’t see that coming,” or

“I could see the signs but hoped it’d get better.”

Ask your accountant or lawyer – the evidence is out there. This is not to say that partnerships cannot be a most fulfilling and positive experience, or that tremendous possibility abounds when two or more people harness their energies towards a common vision. There is an abundance of pleasure to be had and it’s worth moving towards. But face up to the potential of partnership pain and together you’ll create a way through the challenges, and harness the complete pleasure and pain principle.

To do that requires clarity. Clarity around exactly what is the pleasure that your partnership is moving towards and exactly what is the pain you are moving away from. Generally partnerships do the pleasure side of this equation really well, but fall well short when it comes to the pain. Partnerships en masse neglect looking at the possible financial and emotional pain should the partnership fail. I see and hear this over and over again. I’ve spoken with accountants, business brokers and lawyers, and they see it over and over again too.

MOTIVATE AND INNOVATE – IS IT THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG? Innovation

I get motivated and then I innovate, or is it when I innovate that I get really motivated? Do we do it out of necessity or do we do it because we love being innovative, and love the fun of creating or pushing ourselves to the next great product or service? Motivation Can people motivate themselves? Most of us would say, yes they can – and often do. From the studies of Abraham Maslow, the psychologist, he proposed that there exists a hierarchy of human needs, rising from the most basic to what he calls a “fulfilment of personal potential through processes of growth.” Hierachy of Needs

SelfActualisation Self Esteem

A key characteristic of innovation is that it is a continuous process - innovation is often an effect of the small changes in products and/or services and these contribute to continuous change. ‘Radical’ innovations shape big changes in the world. Barriers to Creativity and Innovation 1. Negativity 2. Fear of Failure 3. Lack of quality thinking time 4. Over conformance with rules and regulations 5. Make assumptions 6. Applying too much logic 7. Thinking you are not creative

Unlock the barriers 1. Be positive 2. Be fearless 3. Block in time to work on the business 4. Have no boundaries – think outside the square 5. Never ass u me 6. Use your gut feeling 7. You are creative and made from the creator

I believe it all comes back to having a dream, setting the goal, and creating the energy for your dream to come true.

Food, Shelter, Safety Physiological Needs

When basic needs are met you become interested in your job, a salary, a pension – and of course fundamentals such as safety at work, self-respect and self-esteem. The individual grows and develops until the recognition of peer esteem, honours, awards and so on mean more than pay rises. The most powerful motivating force in us, over and above such basic drives - is the ‘need to bring ourselves closer to our ideal.’

ROD RUSSELL SAVVY BUSINESS SALES

WORKING FOR YOURSELF CAN BE VERY REWARDING However, one of the biggest issues facing business owners is self-motivation. When you’re an employee you have a manager to guide you, or nudge you when you need a lift. The business owner misses out on this. As the “big cheese,” you’re the one who ensures everything runs smoothly, and it’s you who has to keep yourself inspired and motivated to get the work done. So how do you stay motivated? Remember your purpose – Your original purpose was obviously strong enough to get you into business in the first place, so remind yourself of this on a daily basis. Remember your ultimate aims and goals. If important enough, they will keep you motivated to succeed! Reward yourself – All work and no play is not what it’s about, so reward yourself. Treat yourself when you achieve goals or spoil yourself with something you’ve wanted. It’s amazing how a reward can inspire you to keep working hard. Motivational aids – Read encouraging and inspirational books to keep a positive mindset throughout the day. Personal development programs, seminars and networking with like-minded people are always rewarding, and may lead you to your next big client.

Motivate others – It is important that your staff members are regularly inspired. Everyone needs motivation and as the boss it’s your duty to ensure that your staff are happy and upbeat. A positive attitude is vital for success in life and in business. Take time out – Operating a business often equates to working more hours than you would as an employee, so take time out away from the business now and then. Regardless of what you do, taking time away from the work place is vital to your success and will greatly reduce the chance of burn-out. Successful businesses with motivated teams in place will always be sought after. High demand businesses equate to strong sale prices when the time comes, so get inspired. It all starts from the top.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT AGENT FOR YOUR SALE Finding the perfect real estate professional to guide you through selling the most important and often most expensive asset that you may ever own is critically important. The right person is a critical part of the selling process and should assist not only by providing insight and experience, but also by shouldering some of the burden and pressure associated with this most stressful of times. When making the decision to appoint an agent, a good rapport is key. The position requires fundamentals such as trust, integrity and honesty to be combined with expertise in interpersonal skills, negotiation and general adaptability. A good reputation, longevity, a high degree of professionalism and dedication to your needs as the seller are also immensely important. Key criteria for identifying likely offices/candidates to interview: • Professional designation and membership of the local, state or national real estate institute • Positive word of mouth and references from previous clients • Knowledge, longevity and commitment to the area in which you’re selling your property Important questions once you’ve made an appointment: • What is your experience as a real estate agent? • Are you employed full-time or part-time as an agent? • How long have you worked in this particular location? • How many property transactions were you involved with last year? • How many properties do you currently have listed? • What do you perceive your personal strengths are as a real estate agent? Your agent should provide: • Access to relevant and most recent market information in your area • Advice on how best to market and present your home • Advice on the relevant comparisons in your area and most appropriate method of sale • Demonstrated ability and strong sales history • Ongoing access to a range of advertising and marketing options • Effective administration of all legal and financial requirements from list to sale to settlement Once you’ve finalised your shortlist and finished your interviews, take note of your gut instinct and take the plunge. It may be the best decision you will ever make!

engagement matters DAVID CHAMBERLAIN EXPRESS PRINT & MAIL

REAL CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT Easy to say, harder to achieve. With so much noise in the market place, how does a business determine where to focus and deploy resources to attract and retain customers? Like most challenges in life, there are always lessons we can learn from others and timeless principles we can apply to help achieve results. Two areas which can make a tremendous impact on real customer engagement and loyalty are good data capture practices and the use of segmented personalised communication. Most businesses should be able to identify their customers’ sales /engagement journey, and as a result, there will be numerous opportunities to capture relevant data from prospects and customers.

THINKING OF CONNECTING WITH YOUR DATABASE?

‘Relevant’ is defined by how the data might be used for ongoing analysis and communication – for example, a full postal address may not be relevant, as you are only sending emails. However, a simple postcode might be relevant to geo-fence a target area. The key is to define what data is relevant, how and when in the journey you can capture it and to start as soon as possible. Once you have some relevant data, the opportunities to start segmenting and personalising communications to improve engagement are numerous. Everyone loves being recognised and feeling important. The easiest way to achieve this is to use a person’s name. From there, depending on the richness of the data, you can match offers, content and images to customers, create compelling value propositions and time broadcasts to match ideal viewing windows etc. Basically, get the right message to the right person at the right time. Ultimately, there is no one size fits all solution to real customer engagement, as every business, market and product or service is unique. However, capturing and using relevant customer data can lay the foundation for dramatically improved engagement opportunities and long term client loyalty.

Looking to engage with your customers in a more personal way? Why not consider a Printed, Personalised Postcard Campaign?

- 4 colour printing on both sides for maximum visual impact in the mailbox. - Option to fully personalise both the front and back artwork to increase engagement. - Oversize postcard dimensions (up to- 130mm x 240mm) to ensure your message “stands out” from the rest. - Guaranteed delivery by Australia Post, with the potential to access postage discounts.

KATHRYN WILKINSON SUNSHINE COAST GRAMMAR SCHOOL

CLASSROOMS OF THE FUTURE – TRANSFORMING LEARNING What a long way we’ve come from what was once viewed as the traditional school classroom. We are now educating students for the 21st century to be active thinkers, who are able to collaborate with learning partners and think and problem solve critically, while displaying creativity across a variety of contexts. Traditional classrooms in the 20th century were dominated by one type of furniture design, usually arranged in a straight line, with classes predominantly teacher and blackboard focused. In the late 20th century, digital technologies were added to the classroom in the forms of interactive or conventional whiteboards and a handful of desktop computers – but these additions rarely altered the dynamics of the teaching style within the classrooms. There are exciting changes afoot for our 21st century learners. Our modern day classrooms are being transformed into stimulating and colourful, student-centred, flexible environments. Without doubt, current research is pointing to the fact that peer collaboration (team work) and feedback as a result of this collaboration are strategies which have the greatest impact on improving learning outcomes (Hattie 2009). Flexible table groupings and seating arrangements lead to more discussion, active student learning and frequent informal teacher assistance, with students in these environments outperforming those who were taught the same course in a traditional classroom (Whiteside, Brooks and Walker 2010).

Wednesday, 13 August at 10.30am

Research shows (Gee 2006) that 21st century classrooms need to: n

be welcoming and familiar

n

be flexible

n

allow adequate space for movement

n

allow for student and teacher ownership

n

enable changeable focal points within the space

n

have mobile displays that support collaboration and teaching with digital media

n

anticipate future needs

The challenge for schools is to ensure that learning environments continue to evolve in response to the needs of current and future learners. With these exciting changes taking place in our classrooms right now, we can be assured that we are providing the dynamic environment required for the 21st century learner.

Kathryn is passionate about teaching her students to be active thinkers who question, wonder and hypothesise about their world around them. As an early years teacher she sees her role as to ignite each student’s passion for learning and encourage them to become inquisitive lifelong learners.

PEOPLE, PETS AND PLANTS Water is the lifeblood of our planet and makes up a significant fraction of the human body, both by weight and by volume. By weight, the average human adult male is approximately 65 per cent water. However, there can be considerable variation in body water percentage, based on a number of factors like age, health, weight and gender. So it stands to reason that the quality of the water that we ingest into our bodies will have an incredible impact on our overall health and wellbeing. If we drink stagnant water we’ll be left feeling sluggish and tired. If we drink rain water, which tends to be acidic, we leave ourselves open to all kinds of diseases that science has proved flourish in an acidic environment, including cancers and other major nasties. Even our town water can affect our health, with the heavy metals, toxins and things like fluoride and chlorine being taken into our bodies. Drinking rain water, tap water or even stagnant water may quench your thirst, but will not necessarily improve your health On the other hand, if we drink energised, structured, alkalised water we give our bodies the best chance of optimal health, vitality, longevity and overall wellbeing for our family and ourselves. And that’s not all. The water we feed our pets will also significantly impact their health and vitality. Even our gardens and plants flourish when we water with energised, structured water. Fortunately, there are products on the market that can be attached to our home water intake that energise and structure water, whilst simultaneously alkalising our drinking water to produce perfect water for the human body, pet consumption and optimal garden growth. It is simply up to us to take charge and ensure we provide the best possible water to feel great.

The water we feed our pets will also significantly impact their health and vitality. Even our gardens and plants flourish when we water with energised, structured water.

WAKE UP TO MOTIVATION What motivates you? Do you know? Have you ever stopped and thought about it? If not, do it now! Sit quietly for a few minutes and reflect on the times in your life you have been superenthusiastic and excited – and what triggered those emotions. That will give you a clue as to what motivates you. For me, it’s learning. I LOVE to learn. This morning I had a call from the USA. I was being asked to contribute to a program run by two extraordinary young men. I was going to say no because I

was too busy, but after talking to one of them for an hour, I was so excited by the prospect of what we could achieve together that I signed up! As long as I’m learning, I feel I’m on track. I was inspired by the stories of these young men. One of them emigrated at 15 by himself from Nigeria to the USA. Penniless and alone, he started at a school, graduated at 16 with a scholarship to a prestigious college, won university medals and at age 30 has had three huge companies which he has sold for millions. That is not what inspired me. It was his desire to make a difference and to partner with others to bring substantial change for good in the world. I’m inspired by stories of overcoming hardship and people who, despite horrific disabilities, work and share their amazing spirits.

So what is your purpose? It will motivate you more than anything! Who inspires you? If you need more inspiration, visit deanclifford.com and you will never complain about your life again!

WAKE UP AND WIN! Your motivation comes from within. Inspiration from others and through others. Listen carefully!

Bartercard: helping businesses grow on the Sunshine Coast for over 22 years Thanks Bartercard for the last four years. I have bought so many fantastic things on Bartercard including tickets to motivational speakers, holidays, computers, even a pedigree kitten. I pay rent on Bartercard and just recently purchased a property paying the deposit on Bartercard.

The more we investigate the opportunities in Bartercard the more doors open, especially within the hospitality sector. Taking the time to better understand the Bartercard system has shown us how to access revenue previously lost in room nights that would otherwise have expired valueless.

I can honestly say it has been great for my business. Thanks again for your service and always smiling demeanour.

Who motivates you?

Motivational quote... I am also a Mindset Mentor and Life Coach, so inspirational quotes are like my ‘coffee’… they stimulate me. I have many I love, but in business this one by Tony Gaskins Jr is a terrific motivator when some days feel like a battle: “If you don’t build your dream, someone will hire you to build theirs.” At Fits in we build dreams for clients. We understand the risk, the expense and the many hours poured into their business.

As a wife and mother, my husband and children motivate me foremost. Family has always come first which is a core value that my wonderful Dad instilled in me. Spending quality time together is a must for us. Forward thinking modern entrepreneurs excite my business mind. Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Sara Blakely – their passion was unwavering and failure their motivator. In business and life in general we can use the same principles. Let passion fuel you and failure be our teacher.

Motivational quote... “Just do it”. At the end of the day it always takes action to cause something to happen and this applies to business as well. If we are waiting for the right time and circumstances maybe it’s time to ask yourself, “Is this just an excuse for not taking action?”, “Is this just an excuse for not taking action?” As with whatever you really want to do, there is no time like the present, no matter the time and circumstances.

Who motivates you? Personally my brother John Forbes inspires me (nominated for Australian of the year 2003, Order of Australia and founder of the Blue Ribbon Foundation) as he just does whatever it takes to benefit others without any consideration for himself. In business my staff motivate me as they are such a great group of dedicated people who continually contribute their ideas and expertise to make our business better for our clients and us. My networking group, Better Business Habits, also motivate me as they keep me up to date with business trends and great ideas on what’s available for our business.

By gaining an understanding of the foods you eat and how you eat them the food you eat can become a medicine rather than a poison. ‘Abhyanga’ Ayurvedic oil massage is a gentle way of overcoming stress and fatigue to help open the channels of the body, aid in detoxification, lubricate the joints in the body, increase circulation, increase mental alertness and sleep deeper at night. Herbal massage oils contain a blend of carefully chosen herbs known for their ability to strengthen the physiology and balance the mind. So a massage with herbal massage oil has twice the beneficial power, the benefits from the performance of the actual massage and the added healing wisdom of the herbs. By making positive lifestyle changes the benefits to your health will be more energy, clarity of mind, and a happier outlook on life. do illustrate how it can help to know the lie of the battlefield when you engage. So where are we now? As the chart shows, consumer spending in the March quarter this year is still well below trend. However, I am confident that we are moving into better territory and that the financial year 2014-15 will offer improved opportunities. Why? Because I also track business confidence and business investment. By necessity business people have to be more strategic than consumers, so their indicators tend to lead trends and these figures looks encouraging. To help plan the coming year, next month I will give these figures for you to consider. Summary: Don’t get me wrong. I love watching motivated, inspired and passionate people succeed. But as a caution, I pass on the words of my favourite philosopher, Scotsman David Hume. He wrote, “A wise person proportions their beliefs to the evidence.”

However powerful the motivation, if you set out to achieve what appears to be the right thing when it is clearly the wrong time, it will always be seen in retrospect as being the wrong thing.

powering

business potential with Kimberley Lynch

Small business is doing it hard in these tough economic times. Competition is fierce and finding that little edge to succeed is crucial. Often it comes down to simply having the right motivation and inspiration. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) is constantly working to find and provide that edge for its business community. CCIQ gets its motivation and inspiration from seeing a successful business thrive in an operating environment that supports business growth.

As the state’s peak business body and with a nearly 150 year history of helping Queensland businesses, we understand the hurdles that business owners have to overcome. While it can be an extremely rewarding experience, issues like endless paperwork, red tape and painful processes can put a real dampener on things.

As a result of member feedback and research, we at CCIQ have completely transformed our business model to respond to the needs of businesses across the state. CCIQ is working on a suite of products to make life easier, faster and simpler for business. We are in the process of launching these unique concepts which will benefit all SMEs. The State Government’s recent GoDigitalQld visionary statement discussed how absolutely important it was for Queensland small business to be digitally capable and ready for the revolution. However CCIQ research has found that up to 60 per cent of businesses do not have a CRM – a Customer Relationship Management system which involves using technology to organise, automate

This is one of the reasons he only uses local produce in his restaurant – this not only satisfies the customers’ taste buds with fresh and local produce, but leaves them happy knowing they are supporting local businesses around them. The staff at Stones on the Coast honour the need for good and friendly service, and they really understand that there is a need for a warm and welcoming presence from the very minute you step in the door, until you leave. Their goal is to not just be wait staff, but to create relationships with their customers, making them feel welcome and really wanting to come back. When we asked Hlaing Min and his friendly team member, Emma, what they wanted

Noosa’s North Shore

the venue to be famous for, they responded, “We want to create a place where people not only enjoy the experience they have, but want to come back again with all their friends and family. Not just a restaurant to go out to dinner at, but a place for dinner with the feeling of us as staff being their friends. A place that children, teenagers and adults as families interact with each other, not just staring at their phones the whole time – a place where they can connect outside of the family home.” The stone grill is a small stone on which the meat is cooked at your table, and the taste is incredible. Min is offering Business Matters readers the opportunity to enjoy a night out at his restaurant. Every table will receive one free dessert, ‘ice cream on the stone,’ where, instead of the stone being heated to cook your meat, it’s frozen to keep your ice cream at the perfect temperature.

Crocodile Dundee

Going Walkabout to the Sunshine Coast The original Crocodile Dundee himself, Paul Hogan, is appearing at Sunshine Coast Council’s Nambour Civic Centre in the hilarious Hoges; One Night Only! on Friday 1 August at 7.30pm. Hoges first appeared on our screens over 40 years ago and has since won Logies and Golden Globes, hosted the Oscars and sold Australia to the world. Despite his success Hoges remains the humble, funny larrikin that he always was. Hoges first toured regional Australia 30 years ago and is excited to be doing so again. Last year Paul toured the major cities around the country with his ‘An Evening with Hoges Tour’ and judging by the audience reaction, it was a huge success. This show promises to be a dazzling combination of stand-up, stories and unseen clips. Paul Hogan is live on stage for two hilarious hours doing what Hoges does best – entertaining.

E Empowering

The only question you should be asking yourself as a business owner this new financial year is, “Are you living to work or working to live?” If you choose the latter, here are some tips to inspire you to achieve your goals. Day to Day Operations The program called Basecamp at https:// basecamp.com has a free trial period, like many do. This program will allow you to project manage more efficiently and you can work with a team as well, including outside contractors. http://www.teamdirection.com is fantastic if you want to see all your activities at a glance. It provides you with Gantt Charts that can sync to your calendar and To Do Lists on Basecamp. The best part is you can

to be successful. https://pulseapp. com is very useful for this purpose.

Staff Management

At SASIR we are empowering entrepreneurs with a range of active, time saving and exciting informative sessions in an area near you, online and in person, commencing September 2014. Spaces are limited.

If you already have a Google Account, you may be familiar with Dropbox. This is great for operating team projects and you can receive video applications from job seekers, reducing your time for interviewing candidates and enabling you to shortlist faster. The best part is you can integrate Basecamp with Dropbox with an app called http:// wappwolf.com. This is one of my favourite apps, as it is so versatile. Technology aside, you can print a simple Open and Close list and keep it in a coloured folder in the same place, for you and/or your staff to access for smoother transition each day and less training time for new staff members. Accounts Know your ‘burn rate.’ This is how much capital you have available to get your business off the ground. Keeping track of your cash flow is paramount

for business with Amanda Oxley, Amanda’s Hair Design

Box Colour vs Salon Colour A new generation of home hair colours is flooding the beauty counters and according to awarded colourist and salon owner Amanda Oxley, of Amanda Hair Design in Brightwater, some of the latest DIY products are as good as the ones used in salons. But it’s the application process that matters. The plethora of new products can be confusing, to say the least. The sales of home hair tints have almost doubled in the past few years, with more than eight million women now colouring

their hair at home, and more colouring kits being sold than ever before. Around $18 compared to a minimum spend of $60 in a salon, DIY hair colours are definitely an attractive option. But as anyone who has been tempted by a box of Scandinavian Blonde only to end up looking like Ronald McDonald will tell you, home hair colouring can still be a disaster waiting to happen. There are now roughly 50 products available – tone-on-tone tints, level one, two and three colours with fruit extracts and herbal additives, reflective shades and even fashion tints for men. It sounds reassuringly scientific but for the average shopper, very confusing. Here is a summary to help you. • Temporary Colours LASTS 1-3 shampoos which include coloured hair sprays, coloured chalks or shampoo packets. These colours will add tone or darken the hair and will wash out quickly. • Semi-Permanent LASTS 4-8 shampoos which include Wella Colour Mousse and Wella Colour Fresh which are available in our Brightwater Salon. These can be used to subtly enhance your natural colour

We offer general insurance for absolutely whatever you need covered! We offer the best available cover…

and give shine and brighten the tone (especially good for red heads for keeping colour). • Demi-Permanent LASTS up to 24 shampoos which include Colour Touch which we use in our Brightwater Salon. These don’t lighten the hair but will deposit tone and darken the hair to enhance your natural colour. • Permanent tint which include Wella Koleston Perfect will grow out but needs to be reapplied to 4-6 weeks. The benefit is it gives 100% grey coverage and can lighten or darken the tone.

Fun Fact: Cigarette ash, face or bodyscrub and eau de cologne are effective remedies for removing tint stains. Amanda Oxley is a multi-award winning hairdresser who started her career in London nearly 30 years ago. She has been highly commended for ‘The Keune Tinta Colour Awards’ twice and won ‘The People’s Choice Award’ for Wella Trend Visio. Amanda is passionate about assuring her clients absolutely love their hair. INSPIRED TO MOTIVATE Being inspired into action and remaining motivated is more likely when what we do is what we love. Business life is made easier when our efforts and endeavours are congruent and aligned with our expertise, experience and vision for both business and ourselves. Without clarity of vision, without that reoccurring mind movie

businessmentoring businessmentoring A starting point for inspiration is having a defined mind’s vision and writing a plan. Imagine a fabulously successful business. Feels good, right? What steps must be planned to arrive at that success? While others’ business success stories can inspire and lay foundation for motivation to achieve similar or parallel results, you need to articulate your own vision and business story. Researching how great people in business achieved success, then adopting, mirroring and innovating to align your vision will benefit writing your own success plan. Thought bubbles in business account for nothing until they materialise in written form and are reviewed and tested. Create and develop plans based on your vision and intentions, using a strategy that steps you consistently in a positive, productive outcome direction.
