In 1946 Daryl F. Zanuck of 20th Century Fox said, “Video won’t be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.”

If we compare this quote to the success that television has had over the last 70 years, it’s clear that innovation has played a large part in maintaining the success of television, starting from black and white TV, moving to colour, then progressing into the DVD Player, pay TV and now as far as 3D televisions in family homes. The point of this is, innovation starts off as a small creation, but guided with the process of what consumers want and need and adapting to this, something that may not seem so necessary can become a well-used and needed tool, whether it be in business or personal life. Let’s look at the iPad. Do you have one? Do you need one? A little under 10 years ago there wasn’t much in the way of smartphones – the market was ruled by Nokia, with most people amazed at the fact they could make phone calls and send text messages on the go, not to mention the game Snake that everyone crazed over. Nowadays you can do almost everything on the go thanks to iPhones and iPads. The innovation that Apple has built to revolutionise the way people do everyday activities is forever improving, keeping them at the top of sales charts.

Since the first release of iPads in 2010, Apple has sold over 200 million iPads to take the tablet industry by storm. But Apple didn’t just chuck a single iPad in the mix and hope that the first and only iPad suited the needs for people to come in the future, they have ensured that the need for innovation has been addressed. From the Retina iPad Mini, iPad Air, iPad Mini to the general iPad 4, there is an iPad to suit everyone, and Apple has ensured this.

With over one million apps in the App Store and over 60 billion downloads of these apps as of June 2014, it’s more of a question as to ‘what doesn’t the iPad do?’ With a choice of cellular iPad allowing internet access on the go through a prepaid sim or Wi-Fi access only, consumers can choose based on their needs. Not all features on the iPad require internet – such as the camera used to shoot videos and photos, music and any many other apps that you have previously downloaded to your device. Apple has also used innovation to replace the requirement to have other devices by including their feature on iPads for things such as cameras, GPS’s, video cameras, music players and computers.

iPads have revolutionised the way people do business by creating the ease of business functions that can be done on the go on the 9.7 inch screen. Emails are sent and received within seconds, five megapixel cameras take photos or videos of anything, voice recorders record speeches or phone calls, notepads take down notes.

There are apps such as Dropbox, QR code scanners and e-book readers, music players to listen to inspiring audios and music, GPS to direct where to go and FaceTime to video chat to anyone, anywhere in the world at any time. These are just some features that the iPad allows people to use on the go, making business easier than ever. iPads are leading the pack when it comes to devices for business people, because of their ease of use and portability due to their lightweight design.
