YOUR SUNSHINE COAST BUSINESS MAGAZINE

This issue of BM is ‘Strategies for Success’, I believe the biggest strategy to success is knowing that all the WISDOM you need is within you.

editor’s note

WE ASKED SOME OF THE BUSINESS MATTERS TEAM TO SHARE THEIR STRATEGY SECRETS.. DRANKO MAGIC Photographer/Distribution Operations Manager “Motivation is the key, when times are tough finding different ways to keep myself motivated is the key to success.”

ROBIN STOREY Sub-Editor “It’s just as important to enjoy the journey as to achieve your goals.”

VANESSA WEBSTER BM Proofreading “My number one strategy starts with kindness and a smile! People remember how you make them feel, if they like you they will want to do business with you.”

JASMINE SHARPE Personal Assistant “My number one strategy for success is to set a goal, plan how to achieve this goal and take action.”

LEISA-KAY FLEMING Creative Director

EDITOR’S NOTE with Vickie Magic This issue of BM is about success strategies. Those of you that know me may have wondered how long it would be before we had an owl on the cover. Yes I absolutely love owls and I am surrounded by them in my home and office. But what does it mean to me and why are they so special. I believe that every answer that we search for, every question that we ask, all the wisdom that we want for ourselves, we already have. I believe that the answers are within us. Sometimes we just have to search within ourselves. So my biggest strategy for success is believe in yourself, trust yourself, seek within yourself for the wisdom that you already have, it’s there. Sometimes we just forget. Another success strategy I can give you is to focus on what you want, not what you have, not what is now. Constantly search for what’s right, don’t look for what’s wrong. If you look for what’s wrong (and I am not just talking about business here) you will most definitely find it! If, on the other hand, you begin to focus on the ‘what’s right’ and look for the ‘what’s right,’ the same is true, you’ll find that. I guess at the end of the day if you want to be peaceful, your best option is to look for and therefore see the good stuff. The more you focus on the bad stuff, the more it grows, it grows and grows and grows and eventually consumes your every living moment. If that’s the way you want to live, then continue down that track, but if not, start focusing on the good stuff. The only thing that can happen is that your business and your life will improve. Appreciation is a success strategy, a success strategy that works. I need to say thank you once again to the 177 of you who donated to my head shave last month. I can’t thank you enough for your support. On the Sunshine Coast, it’s an absolute fact that people here really support each other. The Big Wig idea turned out to be the best strategy for success I have ever come up with. Of course I didn’t think of it alone, and I think that in itself is part of the success strategies – ask people to help you come up with ideas. Innovation is the key to everything, thinking outside of the box. Thanks once again to our big wigs, see article on page 9. I would also like to make a special mention and say an extra special thank you to the amazing Tracey Templeton from Red Cherry Hair Design in Maroochydore, who shaved my head, Tracey you are absolutely amazing. Thanks so much to our collaborative media sponsors in this as well. I am so grateful and humbled by your support. Our new issue launches are normally the day after we come out, so we don’t have time to tell you about them, but this time our next launch is next week 11 November at the Yacht Club. The one thing we guarantee about our launches is that they are part of our success strategy and we absolutely guarantee that you’ll meet some new people and have some fun. How to Hire a Bookkeeper who’ll be an asset to your business! If you are a business owner, you are already doing bookkeeping and accounting. The question is how do you do Bookkeeping better in order to gain control over the Process and have it become an asset of the business versus a liability? Bookkeeping is much more than just entering numbers into the ledger. It is a thoughtful understanding of the business at hand, managing the day to day input of information, as well as the outflow and inflow of cash. Your ideal bookkeeper should be able to think ahead; helping you prevent problems rather than just helping you solve them. Having an ongoing formal education program too means they’ll have a better insight into policy, procedure, strategy, tactics, and ethics.

For example, here at Business Fundamentals, with well over 25 years real bookkeeping expertise and business experience behind us, we focus specifically on how you can make your Financial Management System and Business Processes easier for Yourself & Staff to Do, and most importantly of all - Everyone to Understand too!

alternative ways to define Success

By Steve Goodman A lot has been written about success – sometimes an entire issue of magazines such as Business Matters are devoted to the topic! Through it all, about the only thing that’s clear is that there isn’t really much agreement on the definition of success. The dictionary simply defines success as, ‘the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame.’ But that doesn’t quite cut it, does it? Haven’t we all known people without an overwhelming abundance of fame, wealth, or power who would still consider themselves successful? Founder of the Huffington Post Arianna Huffington says the true meaning of success “consists of four pillars: wellbeing, wisdom, wonder and giving.” The late poet laureate Maya Angelou has said that success is “liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how you do it.”

Even some very successful people can define success quite differently, so here in no particular order, are some alternative meanings that may broaden your view of success.

6 ISSUE 66

EFFECTIVENESS – While many in Western culture have been taught that success is measured by material wealth, others have come to define success not by how much they make, but by what kind of difference they make. In other words, what impact do you have or how effective are you at achieving a given goal? At work or in your private life, are you contributing to make things happen? If so, then you’re being successful. PASSION – Are you passionate about something? Are you pursuing that passion in your career? If you are, you’re probably happy in your job choice and successful, no matter what your income level. BE GRATEFUL – Understand that nothing in this life, even life itself is a given. Everything you have and every day you wake up is a blessing. Be grateful for it and share that gratitude with others, and you’ll be living life successfully.

JOY – Are you happy? The old adage says money can’t buy happiness. Aren’t there plenty of millionaires out there who are despised and may not have a true friend? Do you think they’re really happy? Are you happy? Can you find joy in your life and express it, regardless of the car you drive or the size of the house you live in? If the answer is yes, then you’re successful. THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU – Someone once said,

“Rich is not how much you have, rich is who you have beside you.” If you’re surrounded by people who love and respect you for who you are, then you’re a success.

BALANCE – Most of the stress that comes with modern life is that sense of being out of balance. If you’ve found the inner piece that comes with the ability to balance your work life with your home life, your health with an enjoyable lifestyle or any of a number of other ways to be on an even keel, consider yourself a success. Of course, we all want to be financially secure, but to define success only by the amount of money, power and possessions you can accumulate is denying the richer human experience.

After working in and writing about the business world and personal growth for over three decades now, when people ask me the secret of success, I often think of the parable of the Mexican fisherman. I share it with you now.

An Australian tourist was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large tuna. The tourist complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The Mexican replied, “Only a little while.” The tourist then asked, “Why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more fish?” The Mexican said, “With this, I have more than enough to support my family’s needs.” The tourist then asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?” The fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life.” The tourist scoffed, “I can help you. Back home I am a business consultant. You need to spend more time fishing, then you can make more, and buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats.

Eventually, you could have a fleet of fishing boats. Then you could cut out the middleman and sell your catch directly to the processor. Soon you could open your own cannery. You would control the entire product chain. Eventually, you could leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then Los Angeles or New York, where you could run your ever-expanding enterprise.” The fisherman asked, “But how long will this all take?” The tourist replied, “15 to 20 years.” “But what then?” asked the Mexican. The tourist laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right, you’d sell your company stock in an IPO and become very rich – you’d make millions.” “Millions?...then what?” The Australian said, “Then you’d retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

Fundraising Success

By Vickie Magic In the last month the meaning of the word success has changed so much for me. I have personally had my fair share of success in my life. From a young age I was a Queensland Champion runner – yes, who would have thought? – and have pretty much fulfilled so many life ambitions. I travelled the word to 75 countries and I’ve worked for Foreign Affairs and Trade. In 2004 I won a Commercial Radio Australia ACRA award for best sales person Australia-wide. Since being on the Coast I’ve won three fantastic local awards, including last year with Business Matters Magazine taking out SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR. I can tell you that winning awards and having an amazing business which strives to connect and inspire business on the Sunshine Coast makes me wake up every day with a smile on my face, and a sense of real pride. Being able to deliver a product that intentionally does not print anything negative as their mantra. HOWEVER, this last month I have felt more pride and more successful than I ever have in my life. My brother-in-law has cancer; in fact he now has two cancers. They have a young family of three children in which the eldest, Deisha suffers from a rare disease that has seen her in and out hospitals and in and out of a wheel chair her whole life. David has been her home carer while his wife Jamaica stayed at work. For a while I just thought, “It’s so sad, but there is nothing I can do.” But then one day I thought there had to be something I could do to help them, so I decided to make it my mission to help them. I’d always said, “One day I’m going to shave my head for cancer, but only when the

cause is close enough to my own heart,” so I knew this was it. I made a decision to raise as much money as possible in the month of September. However, what I knew as well was that my brother-in-law wasn’t the only one and I wanted to include everyone who has cancer, or knows someone who has, and give the other half of the money to The Queensland Cancer Council. They are doing research to find a cure and in the end, that seems to me to be the best answer. So I set about raising the money. With one week to go I’d done well, but nowhere near as well as I wanted to do and had only raised $3000. I said, “I’m just not going to shave my head for $3000, what else could I do?” That week I was at a charity dinner party (for this cause) at my friend Jakki’s house and asked the guests for help. One of the guests, Keith, said, “Why don’t you get some of the big wigs on the Sunny Coast to help you, get them to wear a wig and then sell it on eBay or something?” I thought about this and then came up with the BIG WIG FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE. The Big Wigs would have to wear a wig until they raised $1,500 at which time they could take it off. So this article is about success strategies and so far this is the absolute best thing I have ever accomplished in my WHOLE LIFE. It relates perfectly to business, too. STEP ONE: HAVE AN INTENTION. My intention here was to raise $10,000 for cancer (We raised $16,000). STEP TWO: YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO IT ALONE. Embrace the people around you, your team, your clients and your friends. Ask them what you

Laurie Clarke, Mayor Mark Jamieson, Keith Grisman, Vickie Magic, Catherine Molloy, Troy Chooky Deighton, Lianne Dickson and Chris Childs

could do to achieve whatever it is you’re looking to achieve. Many minds make light work. Ask them for ideas and listen to their ideas. STEP THREE: KNOW THAT WHEN YOU GET OTHERS TO HELP YOU, THE JOB BECOMES EASY. Doing everything yourself is hard work – delegating some of the work to others means you’ll get the job done and not feel like dropping dead at the end of it. STEP FOUR: BE GRATEFUL AND APPRECIATIVE. Once the job is achieved, the intention or goal reached, make sure you’re appreciative of everyone involved. So these steps sound really easy, right? But think about how many times we have a job to do and we don’t do this. We’re martyrs and try to just do it all ourselves, wearing ourselves out, burning ourselves out. I want to personally thank the Big Wigs – Mayor Mark Jamieson, Laurie Clarke from BOQ Maroochydore, Chris Childs from Think Money, Keith Grisman from Property Only, Catherine Molloy from Target Training and Lianne Dickson from St George. I also want to thank the media of the Sunshine Coast who together put up a prize of almost $16,000 dollars in advertising – Sunshine Coast Daily, Grant Broadcasters Hot 91 and Zinc 96.1, Southern Cross Ten, Profile Magazine and My Weekly Preview, who all immediately said yes to help the cause. So for the month of September, we raised just over $16,000 for cancer and I would also like to personally thank YOU, the 177 contributors.

BUSINESS MATTERS 9

LET’S HAVE A LOOK AT OUR BIG WIGS

We asked them to answer each of the following questions: • Tell us a little about your business. • Tell us why you agreed to do the challenge. • What was your strategy? • Give us your top three success strategy tips.

Owner Manager BOQ...

Target Training...

Think Money...

Who? Laurie Clarke is an Owner Manager of Bank of Queensland Maroochydore and has had over 35 years experience working within corporate and business banking. “Debbie and I have owned the branch for seven years now, so our customers get the benefits of dealing with the same people time and again. While we’re a full service bank, we particularly specialise in business relationships. Why? If I’m honest, it’s because Debbie and Vickie formed a conspiracy against me. It seems to be OK if I’m the one who has to look like an idiot. But it seemed like a minor inconvenience compared to the challenges that cancer sufferers face. I’ve heard of three recent cases of friends and clients receiving cancer diagnoses, which just shakes the complacency out of you. How? My core strategy was to go for the sympathy vote – I was particularly ugly. But it did backfire with a number of supposed friends, as I think they enjoyed my discomfort. I’m very grateful to the huge number of people who supported us in the Big Wig challenge.

Who? Catherine Molloy – Target Training – Educate Innovate Succeed. Target Training is a registered training organisation that has access to government funding to help business owners and staff stay updated and upskilled. We love to contextualise programs for individuals and provide personalised training and mentoring. Why? I actually put my hand up to be a part of this fundraising venture because 1. My Father was diagnosed too late and the cancer was throughout his body. 2. My husband recently lost his mum the same way; it was a very short and very painful death. 3. To help raise funds for research so that the suffering can stop was another big motivation for me being involved, as well as supporting a friend and her family. How? Never stop! The wig of course was a genius idea and it really helped create a little personal suffering as well as being a talking point.

Who? Think Money, Wealth Through Property teaches just that. Wealth through property as well as money management, goal setting, fast debt reduction and much more. We can and do change people’s lives in 35 minutes. With over 25 years experience and a large property portfolio herself, Chris Childs has the knowledge and know-how to help her clients achieve their goals. Why? Cancer touches so many people. One of our beautiful team member’s mum is going through treatment as well. It’s heartbreaking to know you just can’t do anything but give love and support. So when I was asked to participate in the big wig challenge I didn’t hesitate. I’m so proud of Vickie and all she has done to raise the funds. How? My strategy was easy – when asked, I decided I’d put my money where my heart was and I would donate the $1500. Therefore, helping a worthy cause and not having to wear the wig for long. Did you see the long red mess??? (Laughter) My team had other ideas and said I had to raise it externally! Congratulations, Vickie. A superb effort!

Success Tips? • Believe in yourself and your products. • Stay flexible (physically and mentally). • Never stop learning and making a difference.

Success Tips? • The right people. Surround yourself with the right people. • The right clients. Once you work out you can’t be all things to all people, your job will get easier and you and your clients will be happier. • The right systems marketing and planning.

Laurie Clarke

Success Tips? • Integrity – Do what you say you’re going to do, when you say you’re going to do it. • Keep it simple – This helps your team understand what you’re trying to achieve and makes the plan easier to execute. • Keep improving – If you’re standing still, then in reality you’re going backwards. The market and your competitors are constantly moving – you have to stay ahead. 10 ISSUE 66

Catherine Molloy

Chris Childs

Mayor of the Sunshine Coast...

Mayor Mark Jamieson

Who? Mayor Mark Jamieson is Mayor of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, with additional business experience as a director in multiple companies and 29 years as Chief Executive in APN Australian Publishing. The Sunshine Coast is a very progressive area, with a growing list of successful local businesses. Providing the conditions to develop this while preserving the region’s brilliant lifestyle is satisfying work. Why? I was happy to help for a very worthy cause and to support Vickie with her challenge. How? I was heading to Melbourne that week for a variety of business meetings and presentations, so I urged my supporters to generate the $1500 quickly, so that the wig could be left on the Sunshine Coast. Success Tips? • Be committed. • Understand the issues at hand. • Persist until your goals are met.

St George...

Lianne Dickson Who? Lianne Dickson – St George. Lianne has over 33 years experience as Business Development Manager at St George Bank, working in the sales and marketing industries on the Sunshine Coast. St George Sunshine Coast is a fun, personal, relationship-driven, innovative community bank. As BDM I love to be out spreading the word about this awesome business. Why? Vickie’s courage and passion is what motivated me to want to be more involved. I can never give enough back to the amazing friends and the amazing support network. Also it is very close to my heart. How? I only had two days to raise funds as I flew out on the Wednesday morning. So I just rallied work colleagues and explained why this was so important. Finding a cure for cancer is on the top of my list. Success Tips? • Be there when people need you, be available. • Genuinely care about your people, products and services. • Never stop learning from the amazing people that come into your life.

Property Only...

Keith Grisman Who? Keith Grisman – Property Only. Property Only are specialist residential property managers servicing the entire Sunshine Coast and Hinterland through to Gympie. Their goal is to remove the hassles of owning an investment property through comprehensive and individually tailored management services, based on experience from hands-on ownership. They focus on having great relationships with clients, both landlords and tenants. Working to ensure the experience for all is pleasant and stress-free. Why? Really, I gave because I helped conceive the idea and felt it wasn’t right to say no to helping out! Other than that my family (father three times and sister twice) has experienced cancer five times in five years, and my father is still bravely fighting it today. How? Considering results, a poor one really. Timing wasn’t great for me, but I think the Big Wig idea has immense opportunity, especially for baldies like me who can’t do shave for a cure! Success Tips? • Life balance. • Talk time to think. • Communication.

Hot 91.1 & Zinc 96.1...

Troy Chooky Deighton Who? Troy Chooky Deighton. I’ve lived on the Sunshine Coast all my life and I have been in the radio industry for 18 years in this region. I love the Sunshine Coast and the lifestyle the Coast offers for families and as a place to live and work, it’s sensational. I have been part of Hot 91.1 and Zinc 96.1 fantastic station for many years, with the company recently being integrated into the Grant Broadcasters Group. Grant Broadcasters is a family-owned company with 56 stations across Australia. Why? Cancer touches many people and more recently, Sam Martin my nephew passed with many people sending messages of love and support. It’s a topic that’s close to my own heart, so when I heard of the Big Wig Challenge raising money for cancer research, I had to be involved. What a fantastic way to get local businesses behind such an important cause, which I did. How? I sent text messages to the people I thought would help me, which turned out to be very successful. Success Tips? • Your People. My staff and the right staff are key to a successful business. • Fun. It’s important because we spend so much time at work. • Have a proactive approach. Don’t sit back and wait for things to happen, business is more competitive than ever. BUSINESS MATTERS 11

TAFE supports apprenticeship pledge

TAFE Queensland East Coast is looking forward to an increase in apprenticeship numbers this year, as the Queensland Government announces a new initiative, the Queensland Apprenticeship Pledge. General Manager Paul Wilson says the Queensland Government’s commitment to supporting training across the state with an additional 10,000 apprenticeships over the next six years is good news for local businesses and school leavers. ‘‘This initiative couldn’t come at a better time for our state, or for the Sunshine Coast,’’ Mr Wilson said. ‘‘With $86 million due to be invested over the next six years state-wide, businesses can look forward to employing additional apprentices to help support their business and improve regional development.”

The initiative gives businesses the opportunity to ‘make a pledge’ for apprentices with an incentive of up to $6,000 for each additional apprentice a business employs and retains. This is a move which Mr Wilson says will give students the practical skills and experience they need to secure employment in an increasingly competitive environment. ‘‘Inviting employers to make a pledge for apprentices can make a significant difference; not only to expand a business’s capabilities, but also to provide opportunities for apprentices which may not have existed before.” TAFE Queensland East Coast offers a huge range of apprenticeships across several campus locations, producing hundreds of student success stories each year.

‘‘We are so proud of the achievements of our apprentices and constantly get feedback from employers about how our TAFE students have exceptional skills, making them standouts in the workplace,” Mr Wilson said. “We have had thousands of apprentices go on to achieve great things and forge incredible careers locally, nationally and internationally.”

For a full list of apprenticeship services available visit tafeeastcoast.edu.au or www.training.qld.gov.au pledge if you’re an employer looking to pledge for an apprenticeship.

IRT Queensland

A new retirement community means new job opportunities The construction of IRT Woodlands is great news for local contractors and sub-contractors on the Sunshine Coast.

IRT Group is one of Australia’s largest community based seniors' lifestyle and care providers. We have been providing seniors' lifestyle and care solutions for over 45 years. The multi-award winning IRT Group manages communities in more than 30 locations across NSW, ACT and QLD, providing care solutions to over 10,000 customers.

A new retirement community for the Sunshine Coast IRT has started work on a brand new retirement community for the Sunshine Coast that will be known as IRT Woodlands. IRT Woodlands will be a vibrant community that is contemporary, stylish, sophisticated and state-of-theart. The community will consist of a 60suite care centre and 107 villas for retirees who want to live independently within a community of peers. A community hall, swimming pool, men's shed, gymnasium and hairdressing salon will also be part of the development, to ensure residents can be as active or relaxed as they like while being a part of, and having access to, a greater network of support. The project was officially launched on 31 October when a foundation stone was laid on the site of IRT Woodlands, in Kawana Forest.

The tender process will close on 14 November 2014, meaning it won't be long before a builder is appointed, and the site on Lacebark Avenue becomes a hive of activity for hundreds of local workers. The entire IRT Woodlands project is worth more than $40 million, and due for completion in late 2016.

IRT Group sticking to the plan The construction of IRT Woodlands is part of a $75 million four-year plan by IRT Group to create communities and opportunities on the Sunshine Coast and south-east Queensland where people can age without barriers. In 2012 IRT Group acquired three retirement properties in Queensland at Bracken Ridge (IRT The Ridge),

Buderim (IRT The Palms) and Currimundi (IRT Parklands) along with the greenfield site where IRT Woodlands will be built. IRT also provides In-Home Care packages throughout the Sunshine Coast community that complement the organisation’s existing presence across the region. If you are interested in finding out more about IRT's In-Home Care program, contact Melissa on 07 5406 0153.

Progress at IRT The Palms Local retirees are taking advantage of a massive expansion taking place at IRT The Palms Lifestyle Community at Buderim. The latest stage of the expansion including eight new villas is currently under construction and will add to the 57 new homes completed as part of the first six stages by local firm Gauld Project Services. The final two stages of construction will consist of another 19 villas. When all the work is finished, IRT The Palms will provide 187 seniors' lifestyle homes in the Buderim area. motoring business with Bob Aldons

They’re really big shoes for the smaller sibling to fill. Arguably everyone knows of the reputation of the Golf GTI, but its little brother the POLO GTI packs as much exhilaration. The famous GTI badge sits on the rear comfortably. It was the Motor Magazine’s Bang For Your Buck winner in 2011. When Motor looked at the previous five years’ winners, it also beat Golf GTI, Subaru WRX, Ford XR6 Turbo and Commodore SS. Pretty good result. Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear also named it as his Car of the Year in 2011. Polo GTI is as smooth as any smallish hatch around the city. Excellent fuel

Cars I’ve driven lately economy and feature-packed (even though I miss the auto wipers and reverse camera – a new model is around the corner – better get that sorted). This vehicle will comfortably seat four adults, and did so on a trip to the big lights of Brisbane recently. It also has the necessary – cruise control, bluetooth for my IPhone 6 and another lot of that alphabet soup – ABS, ASR, BA, EBD, ESP, DSG (7) SRS (6). Check out the glossary at www.northstarvw.com.au. It is, however, a different story when the beast is unleashed. The 1.4 litre supercharged and turbocharged engine puts out 132kw of peak power and 250nm of torque. It’s mated to the 7 speed DSG auto (with flappy paddles) and that’s the standard package. There are aftermarket power upgrade chips that can suck out nearly 200kw of power. That’s a scary number for a small car.

Some people who know me well are aware that I have a red car with the black prancing horse on the bonnet. Whilst I’m not suggesting a comparison between a Ferrari and a Volkswagen overall, it’s EVERY bit as fun going up the range to our place in Peachester and then up Bald Mountain Road to Maleny in the POLO GTI. Polo GTI is on run-out with the new model available in 2015. I’m driving this vehicle courtesy of Northstar Volkswagen. Call me on 0418 748 498 for more information, a test drive or quote. STRATEGIES for Success

By Paul Barrs Oh my, that’s a topic, isn’t it? It’s not just an article, it’s a book, it’s an entire library. However, I don’t have time for a library. I have just minutes between phone calls and replying to emails, perhaps enough time to enjoy a coffee, but that’s it. However, if someone were to sit down with me and say, “Paul, you’ve got five minutes. Can you tell me what your top six strategies for online success are?” I’d narrow them down to something like these…. NUMBER ONE. Of course, starts with your website. This is your own piece of property, it’s the one thing that you have the most control over, and where you can make change and write the things that you feel are important to you and to your clients. It is, of course, important that you define your goals to give yourself direction. That direction will help you provide the right type of information and arrange the sales funnels and conversions for your customers. Here is the simple strategy. It begins with the homepage and ends with the thank you page; ‘thank-you for contacting us, thank-you for buying from us.’ Your homepage and your primary information pages should provide a one click sales funnel, from where the customer lands; one click to the information they’re looking for and then buy. Buy or die. That’s the goal to have them make a decision. There’s nothing worse than just providing information and going, “Good luck. I hope it works for you. Hope you like it. By the way, don’t forget to share this on Facebook.” That’s not how businesses grow. NUMBER TWO. I’d like you to review your SEO, your search engine optimisation. Both your on-page SEO with the content that you provide and also how you appear in search, how your customers see you before they actually come through to your website. I’m assuming, of course, that you are being found in search. If not, that’s a topic for another day. But with whatever pages are showing up in the search results, you also need to 18 ISSUE 66

review them as landing pages. These are the first pages that customers actually land on. Are they good information pages? Do they offer a one click sales funnel? Would your customers have to keep looking for what they came for in the first place? NUMBER THREE. Your social media management. This can be summed up really simply and it’s a shame that most people make this mistake, but here it is, the key to success... Pimp your profiles! Yes, set up your social media and pimp your profiles. Do everything you need to prove your value and your worth to your customers. Get video, images and content up and share your information across the world. Yes, you have to post regularly. Yes, you have to post good, solid, deep content, not just fluffy cats and kittens. You need to post information which is relevant and interesting to your customers, that will draw them to your website and to a landing page which offers a one click sales funnel, one click to find what they were looking for in the first place. NUMBER FOUR. I’d ask you to look at your email marketing and management for lead generation. Do you have a newsletter? Do you offer an autoresponder? Is there some way that you’re automatically continually following up your customers online, using email? One of the greatest travesties of today’s business world is this; we’re drawn to social media like flies, like fireflies to a night light. Instead of contacting our customers only through social media, we must also follow them up through email. It’s more likely that they will see it, rather than just posting something on to your Facebook wall.

And just as a side note, the best way currently for following up customers, if your business allows it, is through SMS text messaging. If you post on social media, they might see it one day. If you post through email, they’re more likely to see it later. But if you send them an SMS text they’re

more likely to review it within moments, if your business allows for it. NUMBER FIVE. I’d ask you to review your CRM, your customer relationship management. How is it that you keep in touch with people? Do you use some type of cloud-based contact management system? Do you follow people up? Surely you know that it’s essential to follow people up, whether it’s by phone, face-to-face or email. However, it must be done. The rule of seven says that on average the sale takes place after the seventh contact, which means if you don’t contact people continually after they’ve asked you to, you’re leaving money on the floor. LASTLY, NUMBER SIX. Your customer and client follow-up. These are the people who’ve already purchased from you. They’re the best people in the world to sell to. They’re the easiest ones to please and those who provide the most referrals. Of course you do know that referral business is the easiest to close, yes? And no matter what it is that you sell, online or offline, your job is to close that sale, to gain that new customer, to get that lead. Never be fooled into thinking that once you’ve got a presence online, people will just come and magically buy from you. It doesn’t happen like that. They need you to prove your worth and show your value, and they need you to ask them to buy from you, so they make a decision. These are my simple guiding principles for online success. Of course it’s a full day seminar but for today, just an article. I hope you’ve enjoyed it and that you’ve learned something. Please contact me with any questions.

mindset with Mandy Napier

All success comes from blending a positive mindset with great strategies, something I learned and used when training for ultra distance triathlons. These principles, when applied to businesses, are equally effective. Here are seven success strategies that will drive success in your business and life in general. 1. Like sport, you have to know exactly what you want to achieve and focus on it with clarity and purpose, shutting out all other distractions. Think of a missile. It travels hundreds of miles, flying over and ignoring numerous targets on the way, eventually reaching

S MA 6 T RIS 0 86 H C 1 UR 422 7 O KY N0 O BO TY O R PA

its intended target, hitting it with laser-like accuracy. You, too, can replicate this in your business. 2. You must believe in yourself and never, ever give up. 3. Stop comparing yourself to others because it’s corrosive and limits you. There is only one of you, so embrace your uniqueness. 4. Become a master spy of your words and thoughts, because they shape your results and are a powerful factor in your success. Use words that fuel your success and support what you want, and choose thoughts that are in alignment with your goals. 5. Know that challenges are not there to stop you. They’re an opportunity for you to navigate around, to learn and grow. See them as being on the way and not in the way. 6. Take time to regularly review your progress and be willing to

make alterations to your course. Celebrate your successes, as they fuel further success. 7. Deal with your stressors. An overload of bad stress diminishes your focus, slows you down and damages your health. The best antidote for stress is exercise, meditation or some good old-fashioned fun!

Choose your favourite and try it out. Small steps are better than no steps. Mandy Napier BSC is a mindset & performance coach. Large Australian retailers and national franchises have developed a brand new service for consumers; driving competitiveness in the retail sector, tackling the overseas online shopping trend and ultimately driving consumers back to the store. Click and Collect is a concept of consumer shopping and payment currently being trialled in Australia, with consumers collecting their purchases from their nearest store location in selected post codes across the country. It’s changing the game in retail and allowing traditional retailers the opportunity to compete once again on a more even playing

localbusiness

Click and Connect Changing Course for Consumers field, through adaptation to societal and consumer trends. A recent survey conducted by independent Australian research company Roy Morgan found that 23 per cent of shoppers who had bought online in the past three months were less likely to continue to shop at an actual store, compared to 10 per cent of those surveyed in 2003. Chairman for the Federal Government’s Competition Inquiry Ian Harper said there needed to be an overhaul in Australian retail trading hours, in order to satisfy consumer demand for trading. He said, “As more products, brands and services become available at the click of a mouse or tap of a screen, shoppers are increasingly less likely to go to an actual store to purchase products. Retailers need to face the facts and consider how and when consumers shop. Factors such as

popularity and convenience are major drawcards to shopping online and these need to be reflected in retail trading hours. However, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Good Friday would still have trading restrictions.” National retailers like Super Cheap Auto and BCF are already offering the service to Sunshine Coast customers. Click and Collect encourages customers to return to their local store, increasing opportunities for additional sales and injecting the local economy to ensure stores remain open and job security isn’t compromised. business potential with Kimberley Lynch

TOP STRATEGIES FOR SMALL BUSINESS SUCCESS At CCIQ we understand your life’s work. We know running a small business isn’t a 9 to 5 job. That’s why CCIQ has developed a range of products and services to help you get some more ‘me’ time, reach your potential, grow your business and turn your dream into a reality. Here are some of my favourite strategies for success: 1. Know who your client is. Believe it or not, not everyone will want to buy your product or service. Spend some time thinking about who your ideal client is and why they would purchase from you. 2. Diversify your business – don’t rely on a single source of income. If you lose a big contract or client, you will still have some revenue coming in while you find some new clients.

24 ISSUE 66

3. Measure, measure, measure. Do you know what advertising and marketing strategies are working and producing leads? 4. Build strategic relationships with other businesses that have a similar target market to your business. 5. Take care of your customers. We all know it’s cheaper to keep your existing companies happy and sell more to them than it is to constantly look for new customers. Reward your current clients and thank them for their business. 6. Know what your unique selling point is – how are you different from your competitors? What are you good at? Why do your customers buy from you? 7. Have a CRM to effectively communicate with clients and build your database. Nothing impresses me more than when I tell a company to call me in six months and they do. 8. Make sure you’re compliant with local, state and federal legislation. Organisations like CCIQ, can help you stay compliant with HR/IR issues, as well as provide you with any changes to legislation. 9. Employ the right people. Look for someone with

a great attitude. Your staff speak volumes about your company. 10. Always incorporate professional development initiatives for you and your staff. Technology is changing everything rapidly. Young people will be attracted to your business if you’re using new technology and it will also make you more productive and efficient. Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion

A milestone in the ongoing development and expansion of Sunshine Coast Airport has been reached.

more than a small sub-regional facility, unable to cater for the modern jets used by Australian and international airlines.

The major component of the airport expansion project involves a new, longer (2450 metres) and wider (45 metres) runway that would meet international civil aviation standards, and accommodate aircraft designed to reach destinations around Australia, into the Asia Pacific region and beyond.

Even now, aircraft cannot make use of their payload potential, so local businesses who might otherwise be able to export perishable and non-perishable goods to the nation and internationally do not have that option.

The project’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is now out for public comment and the proposed expansion of the airport is truly a game-changer project for the region, as it will deliver thousands of jobs, significant increases in visitor numbers, improved access to domestic and international markets and economic prosperity to the region for decades to come. At present, services are hamstrung by width and length restrictions in our runway. We are able to land passenger jets as a result of an exemption from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority – but this could be revoked in the future, reducing the airport to little

The north-west/south-east configuration of the proposed runway will not only make flying to and from Sunshine Coast Airport more economical and reduce flight redirections, it will reduce the number of households in built-up urban areas affected by flight noise by up to 3500 – that translates to about 6000 residents no longer affected by aircraft noise by 2020. Currently there are around 4428 dwellings experiencing five or more aircraft noise events above 70 decibels each day. Through the runway design review process the majority of impacts have been mitigated, and where disturbance to flora was unavoidable, a range of offset strategies has been proposed to reduce the risk to those species. A community of between 14 and 16 ground parrots is resident at the

airport, largely attracted by the airport’s land management practices and the protection afforded the species by the perimeter fence. While an area of ground parrot habitat will be affected by the new runway, we have proposed mitigation measures, including the allocation of a new on-airport area to be managed for the species, which will help in preservation efforts. The EIS indicates the project will contribute around $4.1 billion to the gross regional product between 2020 and 2040, and will generate around 2230 new full-time direct and indirect jobs by 2040. It has the potential to attract an additional two million passengers annually to the coast over that time frame, with the significant flow-on benefits this delivers to local area businesses and tourist facilities. The public comment period ends on Thursday November 13. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson keeps BM readers up to date on what’s happening on the Coast.

THINK BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

The Fundamentals for Business SUCCESS By Vanessa Webster For many business owners, staying on top of the dreaded bookkeeping can be a never-ending battle. However, you don’t have to do it alone. Business Fundamentals understands that as a small business owner, one of our most precious resources is time. Leading the way and delivering access to real-time financial systems, Business Fundamentals was established in 2009, with offices in Brisbane and at Buddina on the Sunshine Coast. Principal partner Raylee Kroll is seen by the business community as being more than just a bookkeeping service, with a background of well over 25 years real bookkeeping expertise and business experience. “This means that I can focus specifically on ways to help the business owner reduce the costs of doing business, enabling their business to simply work the way it should and therefore allowing them to better deal with these challenging times,” says Raylee. Knowing all too well that most business owners didn’t go into business to be a bookkeeper, Raylee strives for her business to be a reflection of her 25 years experience running businesses, where setting and achieving goals has been the driving force

28 ISSUE 66

behind all her successful ventures. “This approach has also given me the gift of achieving the goal of Queensland Professional Ballroom Dance Champion with dance partner Robert Hamilton,” shares Raylee. Business Fundamentals is therefore the catalyst for allowing businesses to work better, and that’s why they say… “Business Fundamentals is Your Partner in Developing a Better Business!” The company has a vision to be regarded by business owners as the leader in all things bookkeeping. Their current client base making use of Business Fundamentals comes from diverse industry sectors, and includes such business types as retail food, waste management, real estate, fashion, jewellery, health, automotive, logistics and audio visual, to name but a few. SHARI KROME + JODIE BERNDT TONIC MOBILE APPS

HOW A MOBILE BUSINESS APP CAN INCREASE SUCCESS For a business to be successful, it needs to maintain or increase customer loyalty and retention. For small business, this is even more important as generally speaking, 80 per cent of sales will come from your best 20 per cent of customers. So how can a mobile business app be part of your strategy for business success? Mobile apps are changing the way we interact with businesses of any size, and this trend shows no sign of slowing down. To decide to build a mobile app for your business, it’s important to be clear about your objectives and strategise around them.

Every business is unique, therefore every mobile business app should be customised to suit your business. There are many ways you can harness the power of mobile apps. Here are four of the most popular features: 1. Customer engagement 24/7 – geo-fencing and push notifications. People want instant gratification. There’s no better way to communicate with your customers in real time and location and give them what they want when they want it, than via a mobile app. For instance, send them messages about: • Specials, deals and unique coupon codes that customers can redeem • Event updates • New program announcement • New store/product arrivals • Exclusive promotions • Upcoming launches and sales • Sneak previews • Promote your business • And much more 2. Acquire loyal customers – via coupons and promotions. Imagine your customer walking within a set radius of your store and they

30 ISSUE 66

receive a geo-fenced push notification with a coupon to redeem that day within your store. This would increase the likelihood of having them visit by providing a timely reason. Or your service business has limited bookings on Friday, so you send a push notification for a value-add offer or discount if your customer books your service on that day – potentially increasing your business on that slower day. 3. Customer service and support – improve customer experience and your brand perception. Make it simpler and more efficient for your customers to get in touch with your company, and offer them tools to make their life easier while using your products or services. 4. Increase sales – integrate event ticket purchasing or mobile shopping cart. If you sell your products or services online, a mobile app is something worth considering. This gives your customers the mobility to do the same things they would traditionally have done sitting at their desks, but on their phones. With functions like photo sharing, messaging, loyalty programs, push notifications and other features, businesses can utilise a mobile business app to promote their business like never before. A strategy for a mobile app for your business will not only put you ahead of your competitors, it will give you the opportunity to have direct access to your customers on their smart phones on a daily basis.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS With a background in Advertising & Design, Shari Krome and Jodie Berndt have been helping businesses grow their revenue and brand perception for 20+ years. Tonic Mobile Apps is a locally owned and operated business committed to providing exceptional service, quality design and state-of-the-art app technology at a cost effective price.

BUILDING RESILIENCE, A KEY TO SUCCESS The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. Nelson Mandela One of the key attributes we seek to build in our students is resilience. We know that in our lives we will all experience challenges, adversity and varying degrees of setbacks, and that fortunately we’re able to adapt and deal with these. We know that resilience is not something we’re either born with or without. Australian psychologist Andrew Fuller defines resilience as the happy knack of being able to bungy jump through the pitfalls of life. A great deal of recent research has identified that there are common traits amongst those young people who can bungy jump through their challenges and continue to thrive. The good news is that most of the research shows that resilience can be nurtured and developed, particularly when those who play important roles in students’ lives – parents, teachers and other role models are resilient and they actively foster it in children. It’s developing thoughts, actions and behaviours that will give one the resolve, strength and strategies to work through fears, loss and disappointment. At Sunshine Coast Grammar School we want our students to be thriving; and building resilience in our young people assists them to achieve, be connected to each other and broader networks, and implement strategies that support them continuing to grow and develop. An interesting and useful resource for supporting the development of building resilience in children and adolescents is the Resilience Doughnut (Lyn Worsley 2010). At the centre of the doughnut Worsley refers to three key beliefs that each young person develops as they build the strategies to enhance resilience. I HAVE represents their awareness of the ‘who’ in their lives – the support of those important people in their lives – parents, extended family, teachers, coaches as examples.

I AM represents how they see themselves I CAN represents how much confidence they have in their own abilities – what do I believe I can do.

Worsley, L. (2010) The Resilience DoughnutThe Secret of Strong Kids The resilience doughnut is one model of a practical tool that can be utilised to ascertain which factors are strengths in people’s lives and how we consciously seek to enhance these. As educators we’re very conscious of the role we play in partnering with families, the community in which we live, work and play and particularly the relationships and connections we create, which all play an important part in students’ belief in self and their capabilities. Their values, social and moral development are enhanced when all factors are intertwined.

RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS As business owners today, we are constantly reminded about the ever-changing technological features of modern day living. It’s essential to establish a solid understanding of the connection between customers’ expectations and the larger technological landscape. There are key aspects to running a successful business. These include having an updated website engine that helps connect social media and online advertisements, in order to befriend potential customers. It’s also essential to have a business software package that tracks the customer relationship management. In other words, some business software packages can help you maintain and filter customers’ purchasing histories, including potential items that your customers might be interested in.

Successful businesses also rely heavily on multiple device connectivity. For example, mobile phones, tablets and landline communications. These devices are generally

synced together. This means that you can take your business anywhere you want. It also means that you can answer your customers’ enquiries from almost anywhere around the world. A final aspect of running a successful business is staying up to date with the latest technological advancements. As technology continues to develop, this creates a more fluid social and cultural interaction globally. Online businesses today are no longer subjected to the borders within their own country. So having an understanding of the latest devices and software accessories ensures your business is able to keep up with the demands of international trade and support.

COLIN DICK DYING TO UNDERSTAND

HOW TO SUCCEED IN DEATH It’s no secret that planning is a prerequisite for success. Conversely, a failure to plan is a recipe for disaster; even if you’re talented and know the secrets to the universe. Some people will sit down and plan before they head off on a journey. Other people, like myself, prefer to rely on their own inbuilt sense of direction. Unfortunately, as I learnt on my journey to the Bunya Mountains that should have taken three hours but ended up taking six, failing to plan tends to result in a less desired outcome than one that can be achieved through proper planning.

It’s important that you know where you’re heading so you can make the most of the time you have available. There are many questions to ask: Do you know where you are heading? What is your final destination? Do you know how to get there? As with all things in life, planning is essential for success. It’s incredible to realise that in Australia about 50 per cent of people die without a will. Add into the mix the need for an advanced directive, financial planning advice and clear communication of your wishes at the end of life and it’s apparent that work needs to be done.

If you don’t know the way to where you want to go, get directions.

The most unkind thing to do is to leave people guessing. Chances are they’ll get it wrong. As a doctor I’ve seen wrong decisions, explosive conflict and untold heartache when the matters around death are poorly communicated. Getting it right today doesn’t mean that you’re going to die in a week, but it will save you and those around you from a disaster when death arrives.

For those things we know well and can do without thinking, we don’t need much planning; but if the road is uncertain or new, or if it has changed in some way, you will always benefit from planning ahead. Taking the time to plan will save you and the people around you many a headache and heartache.

As with all things in life, planning for the end is essential to success. If you fail to plan properly, those you love may find that their roads become uncertain and twisted.

Many people would agree that life itself is a journey. Often, the road becomes uncertain and twisted; illness pops up along the way, financial strains make the road bumpy. What was once familiar territory soon becomes unknown and almost threatening as we age.

BERNIE DUFFY PHPERFECT PTY LTD

WHY ALKALINE WATER Clean, pure water is a cornerstone of good health. Your body is mostly water, so the ongoing intake of water is essential to your every function. It’s common knowledge that most water sources are now polluted, but there is tremendous confusion about what kind of drinking water is the most health promoting, and what kind of home water treatment produces the best drinking water.

Today, too many people are choosing soft drinks instead of pure water as their primary beverage, and the health of an entire culture is at risk. The number one source of calories in the Australia comes from high fructose corn syrup, primarily in the form of soda. Australians drink an average of one gallon of soft drink each week, and this excessive fructose consumption is a driving force behind obesity and chronic degenerative disease in this country. The most practical and economical strategy to combat obesity and chronic disease is to replace all soft drinks and other sweet beverages with pure water. The trouble is, most public water supplies

are loaded with hazardous contaminants, such as disinfection byproducts (DBPs), fluoride and pharmaceutical drugs, to name just a few. Nevertheless, you DO need to make water your beverage of choice if you want to be healthy – but it should be purified water. But beyond water filtration, there’s also the issue of pH – alkaline versus acidic water. There are quite a few astonishing health claims being made about alkaline water, but are they true? Most of them are not. The theory behind alkaline water is, in a nutshell, that alkaline (ionised) water is a powerful antioxidant, with surplus electrons that can ‘mop up’ the dangerous free radicals you have coursing through your veins. Marketers claim alkaline water can correct excess acidity in your tissues, which can then prevent or reverse cancer, arthritis and other degenerative diseases.

ANDREW LANG INSTITUTE OF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

EVENT REGISTRATION SYSTEMS If you’re holding an event for over 20 people, I recommend using a registration system. These systems have come a long way over the years and most are now cloud based, very cheap to use (often free) and have simple templates to make your job easier and more professional. These are not only for corporate events but all types – school events, end of year sporting events, fundraisers etc. How do they work? 1. Sign up to use a system. A web search showed me more than five systems that I’m familiar with – some are free for free events. 2. Enter your event information – name, date, venue, cost, information etc. 3. Publish your event – choose a template and most systems create a mini website with one click. 4. Promote the registration website via email, newsletters, posters etc. What does it cost? The cost varies on the type of event and what you charge for a ticket. The good news is that some systems like Eventbrite and Eventzilla are free if you’re not charging for your event. If you want

to charge for your event, the cost could be around three to four per cent of the ticket price – a few dollars for most events. Then what? As registrations start, you can access all the information you need – how many are coming, who they are, what the revenue is etc. You can also use this information to email attendees, create badges, attendance sheets and more. You can also ask specific questions and gather extra information.

If you want to make your next event easier to manage and look professional, I’d recommend investigating a registration system. MICHAEL SHADFORTH RAY WHITE COMMERCIAL NORTH COAST CENTRAL

WHAT’S HAPPENING LOCALLY? According to 2011 Census statistics, Mooloolaba has a population of 11,064 residents. Commercially it’s predominantly a tourism hub with heavy emphasis on the retail, food and beverage sectors along the Esplanade, and pockets of office tenancies on adjoining roads. It’s a thriving area in close proximity to the new public and private hospital precinct in Kawana, with approved plans for an arterial road linking Mooloolaba with Kawana Way as part of the multi-modal transport corridor for the region. P&O and Carnival Australia cruise ships and international liners have flagged the area as a key target market, as part of its short trips and getaways strategy. It has become an area of renewed interest, in particular from the food and beverage industries. In the past month, there has been an increase in the number of leases signed, with availability decreasing from 46 to 32 available properties.

This can be accredited to competitive rates in a high exposure area. The dynamics have really changed in the area. In the past couple of years, Brisbane Road has slowly reinvented itself with a steady stream of quality businesses seeking tenancy there, thanks to its close proximity to the Esplanade and busy drive-by traffic. As of September 2014, the commercial value of office and retail properties for sale in Mooloolaba is $27,593,000 and the commercial value of properties for lease is $3,550, 957. This equates to 6,064sqm for sale and 16,879sqm for lease.

There has been really solid activity on Brisbane Road and it’s often the first retail district prospective tenants enquire about.

RICHARD WEST TOP TEN HOME LOANS

STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS: FIXED OR VARIABLE INTEREST RATE LOANS? Strategic financial decisions are always difficult. But knowledge that supports an informed decision is critical. The Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) 2.5 per cent cash rate, unchanged since August 2013, is driving historically low fixed and variable rate loan products. Analysts believe rates will probably rise in 2015. The RBA says, “the most prudent course is likely to be a period of stability in interest rates.”

So, to fix or not to fix – that is the question. Fixed rates give the advantage of allowing finances to be organised without the risk of rising rates, but offset by lost opportunity if rates drop. Fixed rates generally range from one to five years, although longer terms are available. At their maturity, fixed loans automatically revert to variable rate. Fixed rate loans generally have limited features and lack the flexibility of variable loans. Early exit fees may be significant and making extra payments can be limited. Offset accounts are generally not available or restricted. However, loans can be split into variable and fixed rate components instead of a single product type. When considering fixed rates, it’s important to know the rate applicable after the fixed rate period. Some fixed rates appear more attractive, but

on expiry the variable rate may be higher than other competitors, which may make such products more expensive. Always check before the fixed rate expiry date to evaluate options before the automatic rollover. So, to fix or not to fix? Present economic conditions have created very competitive loan products, with some lenders offering their lowest rates ever on both fixed and variable rates. Ultimately it’s a personal choice, but one that needs careful consideration in line with other business strategies and goals. But one that must be based on an informed decision.

print, and do you go local, interstate or international? The choices are endless.

Whilst we adapt to those changes, it’s quite apparent that our industry processes are now evolving much faster than most realise. Ten years ago it was quite simple - we would spend an hour or two preparing a listing, pop an advert in the paper and wait for buyers to contact us. Capable buyers would back their own judgement and proceed if they liked the business.

And who will buy the business? Growth in the business to business market is huge and many corporates are snapping up the $1 million plus opportunities. Do you target strategic buyers, investors or the Mum and Dad buyers? Is an earn-out scenario an option? Then you have buyers’ huge expectations – with so much information available they’re now relentless in their endeavours to devalue wherever they can.

Now every facet of our industry has evolved and requires a unique set of skills and knowledge. Gone are the days of appraising a business on the spot and leaving with signed paperwork. It can now take months for the research and preparation required just to get a business ready to market.

Combine the above options with the changing processes of due diligence, finance and legal matters, and it’s clear that selling businesses should be left to those with substantial industry experience.

Then come the challenges of where do you market the business? Will the buyer come from the broker’s database or one of the ten websites they use? Do you use specific target marketing,

ROD RICHARDS BUSINESS ENTERPRISE CENTRE

IT’S ALL ABOUT WINNING IN THE END The Talking Heads refrain, “We’re on the road to nowhere,” sums up so many businesses that operate without a clear and defined strategy. Turning up each day is commendable, but not as valuable as knowing the linkage of the ‘Why’ and ‘How’ with the direction required to arrive at a great business. BUSINESS STRATEGY Defines how the chosen direction, collective resources and actions taken by business to achieve a winning position and end goals. Strategy is about winning and is achieved by starting with the end in mind. Strategy is the resultant process of how planning, visions and purpose shapes what the business operation looks like down the track, and how it achieves needed personal and business goals.

Business strategies explain how the tactics and objectives, the actions and decisions made in day-to-day operations carry business toward its longer term value and outcomes. HOW TO WIN Yacht racing is a great example of how smart strategy wins. Tacking onto the right side of the course where better wind is, reading wave angle and anticipating favourable wind direction shifting a few degrees will result in sailing faster angles with less distance to win. Sailing strategy encompasses knowing how to use the boat’s strengths, covering the competition, heading in the best value direction, setting the right sail combination, using boat speed tacking angles, having focused crew competencies and ‘reading the pressure colours’ on the water that lead the path to lifts and more boat speed. Strategy analyses, then implements how specific element and component settings collectively produce a winning outcome. PLAN HOW When small businesses think about strategy, it’s often considered

as the business plan process and traditional document detailing what a business idea is or what an existing business will do, including guessing financial projections. Business plans are valuable in documenting validated business models, but not the Holy Grail to secure success for unproven business ideas without supporting strategies. Strategy planning maps the direction for energies, actions and implementations and how each action creates value for customers and the business. If a business decides to find innovative ways to increase productivity, this vision, plan and goal has no value until the strategy of how this can be achieved is determined and implemented. STRATEGIES DON’T NEED TO BE COMPLICATED In my marine engineering business the primary marketing strategy was two business cards given to every customer each time they had work done. One card for the customer, one to give to their friends. It worked a treat. Customers became marketing evangelists at no cost. The nuts and bolts for business strategy are what steps and activities a business should do and what not to do to fulfil the vision and purpose of why it exists. Do the current key activities support the direction? How is value created in the direction of the vision and end goals? Does each key activity of the business model have its own strategy, supporting and accelerating the overall business direction?

Unfortunately, situations which were unplanned can crop up along the way, such as an unforseen change in the weather. This is where resilience comes to the fore, to press on in the face of adversity. In the words of Bill Cosby, “In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.”

It turns out that there are several puppets in our daughter’s classroom and one of them is ‘Resilient Rodney.’ This exchange between my wife and daughter was the first thing that I thought of when preparing this article. Perseverance and resilience are certainly crucial ingredients for success. However, what else is required? I’ll continue with my daughter’s mountain climbing analogy. Sadly, resilience is not going to get you too much further if you’re three quarters of the way to the summit of Mount Everest and run out of food, water or climbing apparatus. SEVEN POWERFUL KEYS TO SUCCESS It’s never too late to start over. If you weren’t happy with yesterday, try something different today. In order to create success, you must first define it.

4. LEARN SALES AND NEGOTIATION SKILLS - if you’re not selling to your clients, someone else will be …as a parent if you’re not selling to your children someone else will be!

SUCCESS = NOUN 1. the accomplishment of an aim or purpose as measured by one’s goals.

5. FIND THE RIGHT MENTOR - it may be an author or coach, a friend or parent, we all need help to stay clear and motivated.

Understand what success is for you. Success is different things for different people and one person’s success might be another person’s disaster! Be very clear about what you want and don’t want for your life. ‘Behavioural change produces different results and eventually, the internal vision becomes an external reality’. 1. WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS AND BE SPECIFIC - goals need attention. They need to be seen and heard and thought of often if they ever hope to come true. So surround yourself with as many reminders as possible. Consistent action, no matter how small, has more power than you ever imagined. Think about your goals as opportunities to improve, rather than to prove yourself.

6. BE ADAPTABLE - be like water. Powerful.Adaptable. Our reality and everything in it, is in a constant state of change, while some of us are in a constant state of trying to keep everything the same. Adapt and succeed. 7. LOVE WHAT YOU DO! - producing different results comes from doing things differently, some simple and effective techniques to follow. Persevere, finish what you start, do what it takes, question your long-held beliefs, be solution-focused, sometimes do things that scare you. ‘Be the change you want in your world’. Do what you love. Invest in yourself today

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

2. BE INNOVATIVE – INNOVATION IS IN OUR DNA - life is boring with just vanilla, get creative, be flexible. Don’t let your fear stand in the way of your potential to create and innovate. 3. INVEST IN YOURSELF - any time and or money spent furthering your knowledge and experience is always time and money well spent, remember take small steps and make all areas in your life 1 to 10 per cent better.

RILEY JACKSON DEBT RELIEF HOTLINE

DEBT MANAGEMENT SUCCESS STRATEGIES The theme for this edition of Business Matters is ‘Strategies for Success’ and like it or not, a common indicator of success in today’s world is your financial situation.

• S ECURE – it’s managed through an automated bank transfer service and customised software. All monies collected are held in a trust account, ready to be distributed to the creditors.

Whilst money management skills should be an essential life skill, they’re often not studied, focussed on or even acknowledged by many Australians.

• S AVE YOU FROM BANKRUPTCY – it could save an individual from bankruptcy or entering into a formal debt agreement.

The unfortunate by-product of this lack of knowledge is pressure, or even failure in this area. People operating small businesses, or clients of those business owners, often feel it, live with it and struggle to cope with these debt pressures every day, often causing business stress. Accountants can assist you with your business pressures, but what about your personal debts?

• S IMPLE PROCESS – the process will assess the total financial situation, then immediately negotiate an appropriate outcome on a case-by-case basis, determined by the income, cost of living and debts of the individual.

Support and assistance for individuals experiencing such debt pressure is out there. You just need to know what help is available and where to look. The new Debtstroyer solution for example, allows for your debt to be managed in a formal way, just like a debt agreement, but without being encumbered with the annoying long-term burden that other forms of debt assistance can carry. It’s designed to destroy your debt, but keep your credit rating as intact as possible. It includes the following: • R EDUCE YOUR DEBT – an agreement that can reduce the total amount of debt and also freeze further interest. • NO RESTRICTIONS – the agreement will have no restrictions on income, assets, debt amount or financial history. • N O LASTING EFFECTS – an agreement that won’t affect the credit rating during or after its term. • F LEXIBILITY – the agreement is flexible to include just one debt or a number of debts and even include business or personal debt. • EASY APPROVAL – the agreement allows for an authorised negotiation of all outstanding debts. The process is to negotiate with all the creditors to find a fast and effective solution to resolving the debts.

• F REE FROM STRESS – it most importantly gets creditors to back off and stops their typical harassment techniques. Whilst financial pressures can become an emotionally overwhelming experience in both personal and business lives, having strategies to successfully rectify the situation is relieving and even empowering. So if you, or any of your clients or friends, are experiencing the pressure of managing bad debts, talk to a specialist about resolving your issues using solutions such as Debtstroyer, and be part of the strategy to successfully regain control of your life. Just remember – the best advice is to act quickly…but if you haven’t yet…do it NOW!

EYEBROWS FOR BUSINESS SUCCESS Eyebrows are greatly underestimated in the business world today. People rush out to buy a new blouse or suit for that important meeting, yet figures show 87% of relayed information comes via the eyes. This not only means your business associates focus or gaze is falling on your eyes and face, but also stresses the importance of a well balanced brow for effective communication.

Not only in the professional world, but in any relationship, brows are a major focal point.

facial expressions. This response carries through to adult hood and into our careers, and can quite often be a major part of someones ‘gut feeling’. Whether your brows have been waxed incorrectly, the original shape is that of an undesirable nature, or you are experiencing one of the many brow disorders, these can be fixed. A professional brow artist is essential to anyone in the business world and will understand the difference between a ‘fashion brow’, and that required for a strong business person. Whether male or female the perfect brow is created to match your face, proportion and desired presence. “He looks at me from under his eyebrows, although now I come to think of it, everyone looks at everyone from under their eyebrows.” Deborah Meyler, The Bookstore

Take for example gaze behaviours. Allan Pease’ book ‘Body Language- How to read others thoughts in their gestures’ explains how all three; a social, business or intimate gaze not only incorporate the brows but actually start with them! Whether you are trying to gain trust, respect, or simply make your associate feel at ease, a manicured and correctly shaped set of brows is essential. Imagine if you are in a follow up business meeting with ‘surprised’ eye brows! Not only would this convey a message of being unprepared for the meeting, but also inspire a lack of confidence by your associate, resulting in a damaged business relationship due to inaccurate facial recognition. Vast studies on baby facial recognition show that we are infact born with an instinctual response to judge others by facial expression. Therefore, from birth we subconsciously alter our actions based on

SARAH FISHER AUSTWIDE INSURANCE BROKERS

THE KEY TO SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS INSURANCE The key to having a successful business insurance portfolio which actually pays out in the event of a claim, is understanding the sections that you’re most likely to need with your business.

Machinery breakdown and electronic equipment covers the breakdown of machinery/electronic equipment. If your business has lots of essential machines which are part of earning your income, this section is vital.

Business insurance is made up of different sections that you elect to take where you see the risk is appropriate for your business, and you then set sum insureds for each section required.

General property (business special risks) covers equipment which is removed from the business address by loss or damage, such as iPhones, laptops, Tom Toms or mobile plant/equipment. Fidelity insurance covers employee theft of money from the business.

The following sections make up a business insurance package: Essential for ALL businesses is public liability insurance; this insurance covers the business for any liability for property damage or personal injury claims. This insurance will cover the business activities at and from the location specified on the insurance schedule. Public liability can also be extended to cover products liability for any injury or property damage caused by your product to the client/third party. If your business has plant and equipment, it would be advisable to have fire and perils cover. This section covers the business for fire and perils (storm damage, malicious damage, water damage, lightning). Another essential part of your insurance portfolio is business interruption, which covers the business for loss of income as a result of a peril such as fire, storm, water damage etc. This section is not usually taken on its own; it’s usually added as part of the fire/casualty section. Depending on the business, burglary and money sections should be considered for loss of contents or stock cover as a result of burglary, as well as money if the business is handling money and at risk of being held up. Another section to consider, which may be included in your lease, is glass cover for the exterior and interior glass. Usually the landlord requires this section to be included with the public liability to satisfy your lease requirements, if the building has glass.

Finally, management liability insurance protects directors, officers and the company itself from various exposures relating to the management of the business. This insurance covers anyone who is responsible for the company which may leave them personally liable for any alleged or actual wrong doing. The above are major components to a business insurance package. It’s important that you actually read the PDS (Policy Wording) provided by your insurance broker/ direct insurance company. Pay particular attention to the policy EXCLUSIONS and the exclusions under each section. These will tell you what ISN’T covered. Please be aware that any advice offered is general advice only and has been prepared without taking into consideration your objectives, financial situation or needs. Before deciding to acquire a financial product, please consider the Product Disclosure Statement and whether the product is appropriate for your individual objectives, financial situation and needs.

DAVID CHAMBERLAIN EXPRESS PRINT & MAIL

“REMEMBER IT’S CHESS, NOT CHECKERS.” - MARK JAMES This quote makes the comparison about two similar games that require very different strategies for success. Though both have an end goal to defeat the opposition, use identical playing boards and a number of pieces that allow for movement and the execution of winning moves, you will not win at either game by applying the wrong strategy.

But where do you start? Every business is unique; however, there are some fundamental things to consider which should help. Invest some time in answering these questions and your strategy for business success should become clearer.

When it comes to business, there may be similarities between businesses operating in the same industry that have access to the same market, but often one business is achieving greater success than the other. Why the difference? More than likely it has to do with the strategy being implemented across the business, or the absence of one.

2. What game do I need to be playing to reach my market? Does engaging with them require a simple linear (checkers) model or a fully integrated (chess) approach? What are my successful competitors doing?

Results, culture, morale, growth and the varying degrees of success etc, either happen by design or by default. With respect to customer engagement, every business needs to have a strategy for both initial and ongoing engagement with their clients, otherwise they run the risk of losing business to competitors who play the game better.

1. Who is my target market? What motivates them?

3. Have I taken the time to recognise, develop and use the power and potential of the resources (human, physical, technological etc) that I have available? Or do I need some more playing pieces to execute a winning strategy?

STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS Being in the business of people, I can’t go past another opportunity to write about people being a key strategy for success. I strongly believe the success in running any business that employs people lies in having the right people, with the right capability in the right place at the right time. If all of these ingredients are in the mix at the same time, then with the right business plan to support those people, success is almost guaranteed. Think about the last time you had someone in your workplace who wasn’t the right person, whether it was about their ability to do the job or about their attitude. Either way, I would imagine it did not end well.

Or if they’re still in your business, I’m sure you are squirming as you read this because you know they aren’t the right person, but they’re still there and you know it’s impacting your ability to be successful.

At HRM we... Give you extra thinking capability Save you time

Listen to what you need

Now reflect on when you feel you have been most successful, or imagine yourself at your most successful – your all-time business high. How did you get there? Were you surrounded by the right people, with the right capability in the right place? This sounds simple, but is more than just finding the right person. It’s also about making sure they align to your values and culture (ie, they’re in the right place) and it’s about being in the right job that matches their capability. There are many factors that impact on fulfilling this strategy for success: ‘right people, with the right capability in the right place at the right time.’ So just think about your team and consider whether you need to do some people planning, and review your workforce to set yourself up for future success.

STRATEGY FOR INVESTMENT PROPERTY SUCCESS KNOW YOUR LIMITS - AND STICK TO THEM! Many first time investors into the market get swept up by the excitement and possibilities the future holds when entering the property market. Intimate knowledge of your financial capability is of utmost importance when investing – it’s a rare thing that self-made wealthy people are foolish with their money. A good relationship with a financial advisor or broker who you trust will make the first step easy. KNOW YOUR PRODUCT • If you’ve decided that investing in property is the way to go, it’s important to recognise that the way you might choose an investment property is a little different to how you would choose your own home. • Understand all facets of your investment to the best of your ability. A good knowledge of your target price and area is crucial; know the relevant market history as a helpful guide to assist in identifying its possible future trend. Understand all the expenses including stamp duty, strata levies, council and water rates, real estate commission etc. KNOW YOUR DESIRED OUTCOME Investing in property has many benefits, not the least of which include: • Generate capital growth – greater increase in the value of your property over time by buying in a higher priced area, which should perform well in a capital growth sense but will probably return less from rent via a

lower standard of home. • Generate rental income and yield – annual rental income less any costs divided by the purchase price of the property. Frequently done by

purchasing in a cheaper area that may not return as well capital growth wise, but will bring a higher rental return per week, usually via a higher comparative standard of home. • Gain potential tax advantages associated with negative gearing – with negative gearing you can deduct the costs of owning your investment property from your overall income, reducing your tax bill. All of these forms of investment have strong supporters, but in the long run it is YOU making the investment. Do your homework and make YOUR choice!

For the Coast, a key piece of good news emerging from the figures is that sectors where we are strong have both solid volumes for our residents and are growing quite well. Accommodation, hospitality, health and community services all have a natural fit with our geography, demography and economy. Construction and education also fit well on the Coast and appear to have a healthy and secure future. Projects such as the fast expanding University of the Sunshine Coast and huge

numberbusiness

new University Hospital at Kawana are key pieces of major infrastructure that spin off to good business opportunities. And although some are currently surrounded by controversy, billion dollar projects such as the Maroochydore Town Centre, the Airport expansion, Caloundra Downs and the Sekisui Community at Yaroomba will provide significant opportunities, new community infrastructure and accommodation and recreation facilities that will help local businesses to expand. These all fit well with the positive trends showing up in the 1994-2013 employment profiles. Leveraging off the changes in IT and rapid travel (and the incomparable climate/lifestyle), another emerging area for Coast business opportunities is the broad range of professional, technical, scientific and property services that have always been a local strength. Expect to see an increasing number of these people running professional services businesses on the Coast, with clients all around the country and overseas. SUMMARY: The employment data tells me that with a canny mixture of good luck and good judgement, the Sunshine Coast is in the box seat to grow in quality as well as quantity. Spare a thought for the communities that were built on major manufacturing e.g. Geelong, or many rural towns dependent on agriculture.

Why Jodi Chapman believes everything happens for a reason… Throughout your life you will meet some people whose stories will absolutely blow you away. One story I have recently heard is the memoir of local naturopath Jodi Chapman. Although looking at her and her lifestyle she seems the essence of good health, it’s quite hard to believe that earlier on in life Jodi relied on medication to simply get through each day. From the tender age of seven, Jodi Chapman’s life was dominated by agonising migraines which transformed her life into one big battle. At 18, Jodi was funding her cocktail of medicine by juggling two jobs to pay for her $140 weekly medication costs, as well as studying a secretarial course. Throughout this journey, Jodi was shot down by bad news after bad news, with the sudden loss of her mother and multiple hospitalisations. Though what can only be described as a bizarre twist of circumstances, a mysterious health practitioner with no formal qualifications appeared. Shockingly, after just one session of his unconventional method of pressure massage, all of Jodi’s health issues had simply disappeared. With this bizarre healing, Jodi stuck to her gut feeling

1978

and decided to stop taking the pills and medications she’d been taking for years. Inspired and motivated by her new healer, Jodi took a leap of faith and enrolled in university and was given options to major in PE teaching, nursing and counselling. Wedged with a decision to make, Jodi chose counselling, but was absolutely dumbfounded on orientation day when she was informed that a major in naturopathy was being introduced. It was an absolute no-brainer for Jodi, that this was a way of the universe guiding her on her path of purpose. From her qualifications of the degree in naturopathy, Jodi started up Advanced Wellness & Behavioural Centre in Buderim and it simply boomed. Within twelve months she acquired two receptionists and another nutritionist, and then they were forced to move into another office to cater for the expanding business. These days the centre is continuing to help many people get their health and life back on track, through Jodi’s knowledge and experience of discovering her own way out of a life of disease. www.advancedwellness.com.au

Then there’s Social Media – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+ and video with Youtube, Vimeo, Metacafe oh, and don’t forget article publishing, blogs, RSS feeds, coupons, email marketing... Yes, confusion is understandable! So what is the solution? One thing that isn’t an option is to ‘Opt out’ and wait for the dust to settle – because, by the time it does, your competitors will be so far ahead of you that you’ll never catch up (assuming you’re still in business)!

What you need is a plan and access to your own online ‘Guru’ that can demystify all of this ‘Technobabble’ and let you focus on what you know – running the business. That’s where we can help – for less than the cost of a couple of cups of coffee you can have access to your own online “Guru” – we will show you what you need to pay attention to and, importantly, what you should ignore when it comes to your online marketing options. So, what are you waiting for? Make contact with us now and we’ll set up a convenient time for you to have a ‘Chat’ with us about your business and from there we’ll show you how having your own ‘Guru’ will help you moving forward. Oh, and did we mention that our first ‘Chat’ is FREE and totally without obligation? Well, it is – so you have nothing to lose and, who knows, it could just make your world a whole lot clearer and easier.

Bartercard: helping businesses grow on the Sunshine Coast for over 22 years Thanks Bartercard for the last four years. I have bought so many fantastic things on Bartercard including tickets to motivational speakers, holidays, computers, even a pedigree kitten. I pay rent on Bartercard and just recently purchased a property paying the deposit on Bartercard.

The more we investigate the opportunities in Bartercard the more doors open, especially within the hospitality sector. Taking the time to better understand the Bartercard system has shown us how to access revenue previously lost in room nights that would otherwise have expired valueless.

I can honestly say it has been great for my business. Thanks again for your service and always smiling demeanour.

Bartercard for us simply means more business.
