It’s that time of year again! The partying is over, the decorations are down and placed lovingly back in the attic. It’s time to get a fresh start and attempt to keep all those well-intentioned New Year’s Resolutions. However, you know that old saying about the road to hell and the best of intentions? Did you know that surveys have found that only about 12 per cent of people accomplish their New Year’s Resolutions?

resolutions are not kept.

Start Slowly – I know that may sound a bit counter-intuitive, but I tell my clients instead of jumping in and hitting the ground running – start slow with baby steps. Life-changing goals take time to reach. Resolve to lose 10 kilos by the end of March, and you are unlikely to succeed, make it two kilos, and you can. Each small victory builds confidence, and helps you move to those bigger goals.

Make the Time – Like money, the other thing you may need, and find in very short supply to accomplish your resolutions, is time. But you need to make the time. Give your resolutions the same respect as you would a client, or important appointments, and set aside a little time each day, or each week specifically to work on a task towards accomplishing your goal.

Don’t be Afraid to Fail – I know you have heard this time and time again, but it bears repeating. You cannot be afraid to fail, failure is the surest path to success, so long as you learn from the experience.

Tell a Friend – Don’t keep your agemanagement goals and wellness resolutions to yourself, tell your friends and family about it. Use social media. This will help you build a support system of people to help you achieve your goals, and stick to your resolutions on and off-line.

You can shrug your shoulders and say, “I meant well, but…” and live another year that much further away from your ultimate goals.

Reward Yourself – Don’t forget to reward yourself for resolutions kept and goals accomplished. Now that doesn’t mean to go binge on a huge pepperoni pizza, after losing a few kilos, but reward

Or, you can follow these tips and seriously decide that this is “My year,” the year, I keep my promises, to my friends, my family, my co-workers, and most importantly – to myself!

Dealing With Finances - Let’s face it, particularly when it comes to jump-starting your career or business, major resolutions could require financial investment. But, do not let money be an obstacle. Think in small increments, invest, or save slowly over time, each little bit you put toward you goal, brings you that much closer.

yourself with something you enjoy that does not conflict with your goals and resolutions.

We all know the problem with keeping New Year’s Resolutions. But it really is your choice.

Put on your BIG thinking hat and create yourself an amazing 2015! 2015 has arrived, and no doubt you have set yourself some New Year Resolutions? The bad news is that most people don’t achieve them, in fact a whopping 92 per cent fail. So, let’s see how to turn your resolutions into REVOLUTIONS for your business. In the words of the late Joe Cocker “You can leave your hat on.” In this instance, it’s time to put your thinking hat back on after the break, and create your 2015 from a future perspective. Propel yourself forward to Thursday 31 December 2015. You are standing at the end of what has been your most successful year yet. Your business results have surpassed all expectations, and your health, wellbeing and personal life are also awesome! What does your life look like? Tap into your powerful imagination,

Thinking Hats On! stretch your thinking and push the boundaries of what is possible. Think big! If the mind can conceive it, you can achieve it! The clearer you make the picture of what you want, and the more frequently you connect with your vision, the greater your chances of success. Make sure you write it down too! From this position in 2015, as you look back towards the present, answer the following questions: • What five major goals did you achieve along the way, which helped create your phenomenal success? • Who were the four most influential people, who helped you achieve your results? • What three things did you do less of this year? • What two values did you embrace this year? • What one thing did you do radically different, which skyrocketed your results?

As you consider all of this, come back to the present day, noting the steps you took, and write down five action steps that you commit to doing this week so you CAN step purposefully into your most successful year yet! In the words of Lao Tzu,

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” So let the journey begin, as you step forward into 2015! Mandy Napier BSC is a Mindset & Performance Coach. Digital Business

The Fifth Pillar By Greg Searle

In the December issue of BM, I mentioned there is an emerging technology, which will change the way we market our products and services. It has been talked about for a long time, and only recently has both the consumer been educated and the technology been developed to realise its far-reaching potential.

Business landscape. However, every business exists because of its client base. You must protect what you have to retain your business, and we all need to develop new clients to grow our businesses. This is at a time when competitors are reaching existing clients directly and enticing them away through alternative channels, and our traditional methods of reaching new clients are underperforming.

• Core Business system > oursys.something

In a recent presentation I attended, a report published by STW Communications (2013 Full Year results), highlighted that 25 per cent of advertising spending is still on print media, but only seven per cent of consumers’ time is spent reading print media. At the other end of the spectrum, 10 per cent of consumer time is spent on mobile devices, but only one per cent of advertising spending is for this media. No doubt these ratios are rapidly changing, but where are you, and what does your current year marketing/ advertising spend look like?

Each of these pillars has a specific function and underlying technology for your Digital

Direct one-on-one marketing personalised to the likes and desires of the consumer is the domain of the Social Networking Application, known as SNA. Year, the same old same old SEO, or have you got an SNA in the pipeline? What’s on the Horizon - SNA? What does a Social Networking Application do? The SNA will connect to existing social networks and retrieve information, which you can use to interpret trends in your market sector. With this knowledge, you can then target specific products or services to consumers, who have either commented about or expressed an interest in something that your company can supply. The second part of the application is to communicate with this community, either by broadcasting to them all, or sending private messages about how you can help. By a long way, globally, Facebook is the leader and Twitter is second. There are regional aberrations but leveraging these two applications, in the next application you build, will give you access to about 20 per cent of the world’s population online. Conversations WITH

purple cow

in your industry!

Claire de Lune

Welcome to our new section of the magazine, ‘Be the Change Conversations’, this exciting new section is to inspire you to think outside the square, to inspire you to be the change within your industry. Feel free to put forward someone either locally, nationally or internationally that you think is being the change in their world.

Y

oung Sunshine Coast entrepreneur Claire de Lune is in tune with what makes her heart sing!

While pushing boundaries as a business pathfinder, Claire has learnt from experience that following her heart’s desire and working with passion leads to success. In fact, one of her many enterprises The Velo Project had a massive turnover in its ‘heyday, before it was sold to finance her next business endeavour. This successful visionary has transformed her creative ideas into a stylish reality through diverse businesses such as creative agency Sage Creations, Factory The Project (a Maroochydore nightclub) and Bespoke Habitats (container accommodation) to name a few. Her creative foundations came from a successful career working for The Moon Group in Sydney and London and a Bachelor of Business Communications from Queensland University of Technology. Somehow her business authenticity, sincerity, and passion strike a chord with most people! Claire’s organic and innovative process of setting up magnetic hubs are in tune with the community’s needs, attracting people from all walks of life to exchange ideas and share a common space. This year Claire intends to create more passion projects in the hospitality and music industries. This versatile creative is constantly growing and up-skilling her abilities, with a view in 2015 to perform and write music for the piano, as well as singing and storytelling activities. Claire walks the talk of Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi: “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” 10 ISSUE 67

QUESTION AND ANSWER TIME WITH CLAIRE DE LUNE What is your background? I was born to conservative, yet creative and entrepreneurial parents, Sally and Tony Elliott. The early chapter of my life was spent fossicking in forests, taming wild kittens, riding horses bareback and helping my mum make a beautiful home on our large country property. I am the eldest of four children. Mum’s happiness was everything to me, so I would help her as much as I could with cooking, gardening and family-orientated activities. My first business was Sage Creations, a graphic design, marketing and branding company that I started in Sydney. After working in the design/advertising industry in Sydney and London for the previous 10 years, I felt I had the knowledge to go out on my own. I believed my skill set could be quite valuable to a number of businesses on a consultancy basis. That way I could structure my life to suit my needs. When the company was thriving, I had three contract staff and 50 job numbers open. For a small design agency this was a huge accomplishment. Where are you from? I grew up on a large property west of Toowoomba. I went to a little co-educational boarding school in Toowoomba and an all-girls boarding school on the Gold Coast. At school, I excelled in the creative industries, being captain of drama in my final year. Do you have any children? I have two beautiful children with my husband Zeke. Our children are son Orlando and daughter Daisy. In the past,

Zeke was an aeronautical engineer, who designed simulator programs for Boeing fighter jets. What was your first business? My first business was Sage Creations. What businesses have you had since? When Sage Creations was successful, I sought larger premises, which was the beginning of The Velo Project in Careela St, Mooloolaba. It was a side business, which enabled me to indulge in delicious, healthy food and drink the best coffee at work. The Velo Project was also an opportunity to entertain my clients in a visually-inspiring space, which I shared with like-minded creatives, who were seeking connection and stimulation. This business thrived because it was the first of its kind and met the community’s needs. Tell us about Factory: the Project? Factory: the Project is a restaurant, bar, amphitheatre for live entertainment and a nightclub positioned in busy Maroochydore. Has it always been your intention to be different? I have always believed in the purple cow theory, which focuses on the need in business to be original, unique and different. It makes sense to do things in a way which opens up new opportunities for people and challenges people’s perceptions of what ‘normal’ is. How did Bespoke Habitats start? Bespoke Habitats is a solution for modern-day people who want flexibility, self-sufficiency and freedom to explore, work and play. The Australian market has responded very warmly to our new container product, as people realise it is innovative, practical and affordable. We simply can’t keep up with the demand, because it’s the most affordable by thousands of dollars yet designed and hand-crafted on the Sunshine Coast.

Scan here to watch the full ‘Be the change conversation’ with Claire.

Who do you think might buy the containers? What part do you play? Our containers are purchased by people across a range of industries from agriculture to the mining industry. The containers’ flexibility, ease of transportation and self-sufficiency, make them perfect living quarters for farm hands, contract workers, and ‘fly-in and fly-out’ labour force in regional Australia.

I consistently managed the design process for my clients from initial brief through to design delivery. I was also involved in the marketing and design strategy. For larger-budget clients, I coordinated their team of agencies (advertising, digital, design and PR agencies across Australia) to ensure consistent and quality rollout of communications and design. What advice would you give someone looking to step outside of the square? My biggest advice to people is to follow your heart. Don’t take the job that has the higher pay cheque. Take the job that interests you the most, makes you feel alive, challenges you and makes you want to learn more. Analyse your versions of ‘successful people’ and take notes on how they got there. Ask lots of questions and put yourself in lots of vulnerable challenging environments where you learn the most, and push further toward your dreams. Where did you get the inspiration for your ideas like The Velo Project? I think my ideas come from the heart. The objects that really move me are usually upcycled - that have history and an interesting story. I love travelling and seeing how other people create spaces.

What is your design background? My design foundation comes from advertising and design agency The Moon Group. I worked for Moon in Sydney and London as an Account Executive and Account Director on accounts from Seafolly Swimwear to Sydney Theatre Company, and Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

What’s next for you? I am always looking to challenge myself. The most important lesson I learnt in the past year is not to chase the dollar, but instead to pursue your passion. It is your passions that lead you to a life of success. This year I intend to create more passion projects in the hospitality and music industries. For me, music is one of the most powerful creative outlets. I am inspired to perform, write music and move people with my storytelling abilities. I play the piano, am a strong public speaker and write. Singing is something I love to do. I know that if there is authenticity, sincerity, and passion behind the voice and the story - with practise and dedication - anything is possible.

How would someone contact you about any of your businesses? Call me on 0424 444 205. I enjoy meeting people and would love to discuss any opportunities for new business. www.iamclairedelune.com

Think Big Plan Even Bigger 3Gs of acceleration. I sat soaking it all in - the feel and the smell.

Big better best - never let it rest. Sitting in an F-14 fighter cockpit on the tarmac, at the US Naval Base Norfolk Virginia, was a privileged unforgettable experience. A unique empowering feeling holding the controls, while absorbing instrumentation, lines of toggle and push-button switches and accompanying warning-signs. Adrenaline without fear, ignited a momentary left foot tap-dance on the cockpit floor. The seat harness felt like a familiar, heavy, leather jacket littered with titanium buckles and adjusters waiting to strap secure its cargo. Aside from the feel there was heady smell. A mix of exotic materials in a confined space, an electrical odour, jet fuel and blended fabric weaves on the upholstered pilot ejection seat. Ejection seats that blast the pilot clear of a stricken aircraft, with spine-crushing

A confidence that this machine was planned, built to specific tolerance, with defined capability and intended outcome. I had read sections of the Classified Operations Manual, the document that articulated performance settings, operations, tactics and emergency procedures. I identified the orange levers to activate pilot-seat ejection. This attack aircraft was a proven package with formidable competitive advantage performance.

deciding to return home and pass-by doing college here, before starting business in Australia……” “You gotta do what you see from the inside,” Henri said. “You gotta think big and not get buried by the fears that will come…. or the study commitment and planning it will take to master whatever you choose to do in life …. “You need your plan to land upright at midnight – you know what I’m saying here son.”

Start switch off-on, fuel pumps on, hydraulic pump check, instrument calibration. Ready-for-action!

Henri gave me precise advice, for both life and business. Thinking is just the beginning, you need to plan and take action.

“What do you think of my office Rod?” inquired my uncle, US Naval Commander and fighter-pilot Henri Bertram Chase 111.

As for Uncle Henri, he was promoted from Commander Air Group (CAG) to US Navy Rear Admiral and later spent time at the Pentagon.

Henri is a decorated ‘real-life’ Top Gun. His steely, eye-to-eye stare and beaming smile appeared atop the cockpit boarding ladder. “You have got to think big if you want to land this baby onto an aircraft carrier at midnight!” he charmed.

Rod has 27 years’ experience as a company owner, director and entrepreneur, and 10 years as a Business Mentor and educator. He is a founding Director of the Business Enterprise Centre Sunshine Coast and Queensland Director of BEC Australia (non-profit Network).

Sort Yourself Out in 2015

moments with DRANKO MAGIC

We went through every room and every cupboard, throwing out everything we no longer need. Things we had been hanging onto, which one day we might need. Well, that one day hasn’t come yet, and we decided not to keep any more ‘One day’ junk. We had been avoiding this clean out all of last year, saying we will do it one day….

Happy New Year! I hope you have all had the best Christmas and New Year ever! Let’s all make this year even better. Probably for most the holidays are over and the kids are back at school (Yay!). We are all glad, we didn’t over do it for Australia day (well some of us anyway).

I know what you’re thinking, “Why is he telling us this?” The important thing was, I spent the whole time with Vickie (my wife). We worked together as a team and we got the whole lot done. I can almost say it was fun, but don’t tell her that!

We didn’t go away, or really do anything too much this Christmas. We decided to spend the whole time cleaning and sorting out our home and the office.

How many times were you looking for something last year, and came across stuff you just didn’t need. We did, just about every week.

So now that we are back at work, it is a great feeling to have a fresh start. Yes we decided to clean out the office too. Setting yourself up for the year, giving yourself a ‘Fresh Start,’ really does give you a feeling of great satisfaction.

My New Year’s tip is:

‘Sort yourself out.’ You’ll be surprised how much easier it will make your life. I know this isn’t something new, but it is something we forget to do and need a little reminder once in a while. So I wish you all, the very best year ever! Let’s make everything count and achieve those goals we set for ourselves, at the stroke of midnight just recently. Until next time, don’t sweat the small stuff. Don’t worry, be happy! Dranko Magic is the other half of Business Matters Magazine. successfulhabits

By Chris Childs

“Begin with the end in mind.” If you recognise this as Habit 2 from Steven Covey’s best-selling ‘7 Habits of Highly Successful People’ you are correct. The ability to create a vision in your own mind of what you want to achieve today, this week, this month or this year means you are able to share this vision and empower yourself and others (your staff and your customers) to get what you want. The importance of taking the time to set a vision and set goals, can never be understated. And the great thing is, there are many, many tools available to help you do this. While I have chosen Steven Covey’s work to highlight this, it’s important to find the right tools that work best for you. Personally, my life changed a few years ago after reading a book called ‘The Passion Test.’ It enabled me to work out the passions in my life. I quickly realised, I wasn’t finished yet, with what I wanted for my business. I then set about describing in very specific detail, what my ideal business would look like.

And WOW did it work! With the right vision, I recognised I didn’t have the right people in my business. Having the right people is vital and will accelerate you like nothing else! Once I employed the right people and worked diligently for 12 months on my website, branding and focus, this transformed my business from ordinary to extraordinary. Now just three years later, we run nine successful businesses simultaneously. What’s amazing is that when I look back, at when I first did the Passion Test and wrote my vision of how I saw my business to be, this is exactly what my businesses have become. So, as a Business Owner, I think it is critical to clearly see (in your mind) what you want your business to be. Take the time to invest in your vision and goals, then ensure you re-visit them regularly to make sure you are on track. Having the right mindset (and maintaining it) is so important to help you stay focused, when obstacles get put in your way.

...it is critical to clearly see...what you want your business to be.

16 ISSUE 68

RESTAURANT Absolute Waterfront dining Under the Tower at the Mooloolaba Wharf Here are three steps you could take today to have the Right Mindset to grow your business. 1. Look at your current beliefs Examine your mindset by looking at your current belief system. Are your beliefs about your business success supporting you? Or do you have self-limiting beliefs, which are holding you back from what you want? You have to identify those possible blocks and turn them around. Whether you know about limiting beliefs or not, they are working in your subconscious mind to prevent you from moving forward. They will work to negatively affect your decision-making. 2. Shape your mindset with Vision and Goals A proactive approach to build your mindset is to clearly see where you want to go. Seeing a vision and images describing your end result clearly in your mind’s eye, will create a strong pull towards this end result. Take the time to find the right tool to help you with creating your vision. It is well worth the time invested. Then go on and break your vision into goals. It will shape your mindset to conform to your vision. And again there are many goal-setting tools such as Goal Mapping and Smart Goals. 3. Protect your mindset One thing you have to do is to protect your mindset against the ‘Naysayers’ and ‘Dream stealers’, people who want to drag you down. There are plenty of people who are happy to tell you what you can’t do. So keeping your confidence is a big thing. Stay on the right path with your vision, look to improve yourself at every opportunity and seek to help others along the way.

business finance tips with JAN WATMAN

As we plan for 2015, it is good to be aware of all Finance Options available to small business owners. Small business owners face a mountain of decisions every day. Not least of these is whether to rent or buy that vehicle or new equipment. The number of finance options can be a ‘mine-field,’ so let’s see if we can simplify the options. As a business owner you should consider the amount required, new or used, tax effectiveness of loan, is it long-term investment or something required for a specific project/contract. I will explain the different finance options. Hire – is when you hire the piece of equipment for the period of time you need it. A bond may be required and this option is better for short-term use. Hire Purchase – is similar to a hire, except you own the equipment at the

businessfinancetips

Know Your

Financial Options end of your agreement. The lender owns the equipment, with repayments tailored to suit your business needs. You can choose to purchase the equipment outright at any time, but can only claim the interest component of repayments and the depreciation on assets. Lease – An operating lease is similar to equipment rental, although the contracts are generally between two and five years. Repayments are fixed, so can be beneficial to customers knowing they will need a piece of equipment for up to five years. Chattel Mortgage – is where a customer borrows funds to purchase a piece of equipment. The lender registers their interest in the equipment with the PPSR and takes a ‘mortgage’ over the equipment as security. Contracts can range from one to five years in length, with the interest payments able to be claimed on tax. Rental (Rent To Own) – An equipment rental agreement generally runs for a set period of time, such as 12 months. The fixed repayments are often fully tax deductible and in some cases, rebates are given to customers when purchasing equipment outright. Along with the ownership option, equipment rentals may be returned to the financier after the initial term, and in some cases, with no penalties, but always check these details, as rental options from one

provider to another may differ. These options are perfect for customers who may want flexibility, or need a newer model each year. You are not stuck with the same equipment for years.

I am sure you have heard of the traditional products such as Leases, Hire Purchases and Chattel Mortgage, but have you heard of Rent-To-Own? If you are a Start Up or growing business you will require flexibility. Start Fresh Finance can find the best solution for you, with more than 20 different lenders to choose from, some require no financials, just an ABN. As the old saying goes ‘a New Year brings a new beginning,’ or a ‘fresh start,’ so talk to an expert at Start Fresh Finance to analyse which is best for your business, for that new car, van, truck, trailer or other piece of equipment. You don’t want any hidden expenses at the end of the loan term. Jan who has 25+ years in the finance industry, helps high net worth clients and businesses to obtain finance. Sunshine Coast Council is taking centre stage and now, more than ever, we are in the national spotlight for all the right reasons.

Shaping Our Future It is our responsibility to build on their contributions and achievements and we are doing just that with our gamechanging projects which will build a strong future for the region - the Maroochydore City Centre, the Valdora Solar Farm, the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion and Sunshine Coast Light Rail. On the eve of the State Government elections, we have called on all candidates to develop a coherent plan to address the long-standing infrastructure funding deficit by providing clear timing and funding commitments. This includes:

I am determined we will remain there.

Our economy is on the move, with business confidence continuing to grow to now be at its highest point since 2008.

he North Coast Railway Line T duplication from Beerburrum to Nambour;

I nclusion of the Caboolture to Caloundra Road six-lane upgrade to Bruce Highway in the State Government’s Bruce Highway Action Plan;

pgrade of the Sunshine Coast U Motorway, Nicklin Way and Mooloolah River interchange;

roviding a high quality bus P corridor between Caloundra and Maroochydore;

We generated close to 20 per cent of all new employment opportunities in Queensland – more than any other region. We have outstanding environmental credentials and manage some of the most innovative environmental programs in the country. Importantly, we have a community that is passionate about maintaining and celebrating our values and lifestyle so we remain one of the best places on earth to live, work, visit and invest. Our successes have not come about purely through good fortune, rather, they’ve come about thanks to the foresight of many who came before us.

Out of Factory Warranty?

with RON HILL

And the day quickly comes round, when your new vehicle has come out of warranty and you are not ready to trade it in for another new vehicle, just yet. You may want to invest your dollars in property or maybe a well-deserved holiday. The vehicle suits your needs and you still want to maintain the car for reliability’s sake, and to get the best out of it economically. What about establishing a relationship with Ron Hill Auto and Transmissions - an independent vehicle repair shop? One of the benefits is a personal interest in helping you achieve your goal of vehicle longevity.

Consider introducing a six-monthly service interval. Things like automatic transmission fluid changes, power steering fluid changes, brake fluid flushing, four-wheel-drive transfer case and differential oil changes, and coolant changes are likely service items, which are needed when the end of the factory warranty has arrived. The stretched-out minimal fixed price service structure has purposely left these items out, which is good for short-term ownership, but does not help for long-term ownership. These items can be managed or budgeted for, in an order of priority to spread

You can expect to find a clean, organised workshop, supported with our team, who are warm, friendly and genuinely interested in helping you find the best solution for your out-of-factory warranty maintenance needs. For more information: Please contact Ron Hill Auto on 5443 4444

Online shopping platform Ninepence

kicks goals in first week proved to be second-to-none with its e-Commerce solution – an online shopping platform, which would enable small businesses to quickly, easily and cheaply set up their own online shop.

Ninepence, the new Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland’s (CCIQ) online shopping platform, kicked goals immediately, with more than 100 businesses registering and making sales in its first week of operations! Ninepence, the FREE way to set up online shopping fast, was developed at the end of 2014, specifically for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), to go from sign-up to selling in under an hour. This e-Commerce platform’s registered businesses to date range from fashion items, to photography, baked goods, jewellery and auto accessories, thanks to the suggestion of Brisbane-based digital creative agency Studio None. When the CCIQ put a call out to businesses on the Internet, as part of its marketing brainstorming session at the end of last year, Studio None

Kimberley Lynch, the Regional Manager for the Sunshine Coast & Wide Bay Area for CCIQ, said the CCIQ marketing and communications staff chose the name of the new platform after research revealed when Queensland became a state more than 150 years ago, the then Governor started our Treasury, with just nine pence in the bank. “Now that is starting small, but thinking big!” Kimberley said. “The CCIQ knew there were plenty of innovative, smart and savvy businesses out there who would be in a position to help small businesses if only they had the chance and Ninepence offers them a solution.” She said a recent CCIQ Digital Readiness Study found companies had wide scope for enhancing their online retail and e-Commerce capabilities. “Results revealed that 60 per cent of Queensland businesses receive less than 10 per cent of their revenues through online sales,” she said. “Our study found, there was a massive need in the market for an efficient and cost-effective

solution to help start-ups bring their products and services to the table.

“They have great ideas, products and solutions, but not the connections to flourish. That’s where we at CCIQ step in with our ongoing Small Business Challenges program.” Kimberley said normally, it costs thousands of dollars to set up an online store. With Ninepence, businesses will pay a small commission on sales from ninepence - but sell nothing, pay nothing. And it is free hosting, free support and no upfront fees. For more information on ninepence, go to https://www.cciq.com.au/products/ ninepence/ or https://ninepence.com.au/ Kimberley Lynch is the Regional Manager for the Sunshine Coast & Wide Bay Area for CCIQ, the peak industry body for businesses in Queensland. 2015…. Let’s make it BIGGER and Better I have one word for you for 2015... ‘MOVE’ Move your mind, move your body, move your thought processes, move and take control of your plans and life. Move and choose healthier food and the lifestyle you want. The body and mind is engineered and geared to move. I am definitely taking my own advice and have locked in ‘the move’. I am walking home from work, and when swimming laps in the pool I say ‘Move’, when I want to stop. When at work and procrastination starts to set in, what do you do? Move…move your focus, move your attention and get going. The best way to move the heart, is bending down and lifting others up. A great way to stop the procrastination process and ideas being killed, before they have even had a chance to grow - is to use the six hats thinking process by Edward De Bono. www.debonoforschools.com/ asp/six_hats.asp

Get moving… Put on your green hat and get creative! Move to the yellow hat and think of all the positive benefits this new idea brings. Try on the white hat… let’s get some facts and figures happening. Now move to the red hat and see how you are feeling about this? If okay, let’s go to the black hat and check out our risks. Back to the green to find solutions, then pop on the blue hat, time to create our plan for action.

What a top hat idea! Of course these hats can be used in any order, according to whether you are creating, solving problems, on fact finding missions or managing teams etc. 2015 its just getting bigger and better every day… If it’s meant to be it’s up to me :)

Blue Hat Thinking - Process • Thinking about thinking • What thinking is needed? • Organising the thinking • Planning for action

Yellow Hat Thinking - Benefits • Positives, plus points • Logical reasons are given • Why an idea is useful

White Hat Thinking - Facts • Information and data • Neutral and objective • What do I know? • What do I need to find out? • How will I get the information I need?

Black Hat Thinking - Cautions • Difficulties, weaknesses, dangers • Logical reasons are given • Spotting the risks

Green Hat Thinking - Creativity • Ideas, alternative, possibilities • Provocation - ‘PO’ • Solutions to black hat problems

Red Hat Thinking - Feelings • Intuition, hunches, gut instinct • My feelings right now • Feelings can change • No reasons are given

Savvy Business Sales

THINK BIG! While chatting with old friends recently they mentioned being bored with their jobs in middle management, due to the lack of opportunity to better themselves and the insecurity of being employed. They are at a cross roads and mentioned how wonderful it would be to own a business. Trying not to get too personal, I asked if they had done any research on buying a business and if they were aware of what was necessary. They assumed that financially they would not qualify to purchase an enterprise capable of replacing their combined income ($120,000) and servicing a loan required to fund it. I then learned, they have $500,000 equity in their home and a very small mortgage. I suggested if they unlocked this equity, they could finance a well-established business capable of returning profits of up to $300,000 per annum. After loan repayments and interest they would have around $200,000 left, or close to double their current earnings. The conversation quickly ended and it was clear despite their dream of business ownership, it won’t happen, as they are not confident enough to leave their ‘comfort zone’ and take a risk. The chances are they will remain

unhappy earning average wages and continue to dream about something that is within their reach. To own a business, you have to take an ‘educated risk’ and to succeed in business, you have to ‘think big.’ The majority of the world’s wealthiest business operators start out small and work towards their dreams of grandeur, always with a plan in place. If you are a ‘big thinker’ and looking for a fresh start, be proactive and research your options to take control of your own destiny. Business ownership offers excitement, security, financial rewards and opportunities simply not available as an employee.

Debt Relief Hotline

Make a Fresh Start in 2015 In the last issue, the basis of my message was for our readers to enjoy a fabulous Christmas, but to ensure that the festive season spending didn’t cause a spiral into debt issues in the New Year. So now we are here, and I hope you managed to maintain some financial control, which has allowed for a more comfortable start to the year. For those of you (or clients/family/friends) who didn’t and are feeling under financial stress right now, please contact a firm like ours to assist you in managing your debts. We have a variety of debt management solutions to help you get out of the pickle you have placed yourself in. The key is to ACT NOW, so it doesn’t get out of hand. But let’s assume that my words were incredibly inspiring and as a result, you’re feeling happy and comfortable with your finances and the year ahead. If you did make some changes to your spending in the last month, you can see that it actually doesn’t take a terrible amount of effort to make a big change to your financial situation. You’re likely to be feeling lower levels of stress and it’s empowering to feel at ease with your financial situation. My message now is simple – KEEP DOING IT! There are many analogies which apply here: • Small changes today, make big changes tomorrow • You have to eat an elephant, one bite at a time • The longest journey starts with a single step • And the list goes on.

I think you know what I’m saying here, keep an eye on your spending, do your best to cut unnecessary purchases and avoid impulse buying. It will all make a significant difference to your life. And like anything in life,

these behaviours can become habits and therefore become easier to maintain. Your vigilance is only required early in the piece. Then, you can think BIG. You’ll create yourself an opportunity to INVEST your surplus money into far more tangible items like property, shares, term deposits etc. You may even have a reason to visit accountants and financial planners to help grow your hard-earned money and savings via smarter controlled investments and proper assets. But its not all ‘Boring Stuff’ I’m referring to, you will be able to travel to that exotic location you always dreamed of, or buy that sweet car, bike or boat. These are the things that will bring truly joyful experiences to your life, something you won’t experience from a counter purchase, at a retail outlet.

So, here’s to your Fresh Start, in 2015 and setting yourself some goals to achieve attainable levels of income and/or savings this year. Why not take the advice of the highly successful Donald Trump who says “If you’re going to be thinking anything, you might as well think big.” And then think like Nike and ‘Just Do It!’

Thinking big is something that we must all do if we want to succeed. Over the next few pages I hope I can encourage you to step ‘Outside your comfort zone,’ think big and set yourself up for 2015, to be your absolute best year ever! One of the best tools for success has to be persistence. If you persevere and continue to believe in yourself, and continue to think big, you can overcome any obstacle. Thomas Edison is credited with being one of the most persistent scientists and inventors of all time. He conducted thousands of experiments, before he perfected the electric light bulb. Edison combined persistence with experimentation. He persisted in his goals to develop the electric light, but the reason he succeeded at the end of the day was that he kept on experimenting, kept on thinking ‘Outside of the square.” When one idea failed to bear fruit he backed off, examined his setback and tried again with something different. Persistence blended with experimentation guarantees success. Stay with your goals whatever they are. Persistence doesn’t mean keep on doing the same thing over and over again until it works. Persistence means keep on doing different experimental innovative things. Try a new approach and keep on trying new approaches until one of them works. Let me say that again, persistence doesn’t mean keep on doing the same thing over and over again until it works, persistence means DO DIFFERENT THINGS, try new approaches and keep on trying new approaches until one of them works. If you keep banging your head against a wall, chances are you are going to get a headache. So stop banging your head against the wall and expect different results. If you actually think that you can, then you can! But if you personally don’t believe it’s possible, then it’s not. That is for sure.

o that’s great for the business. How about you personally! There are a few steps that could help with your forward planning, setting your intention, setting your goals for 2015. The fact is, you can’t just get in your car and drive and at each corner decide whether to go left or right, you have to get in your car with an intention and know exactly where you should turn. hat are you focusing on, whatever it is, expect more of it. So of course this means if you are focusing on success, achievements, goals, intentions, happiness, love, etc etc etc, then you should expect more of that. This is why gratitude works. Being thankful for things, gets you more things. If on the other hand you are focusing on what’s wrong, your failures, the things around you that are going wrong, blah blah blah, then you better get used to those thing being more and more part of your life. You are going to receive more of them. Fact is that you can snap your fingers right now this second and you can decide to stop focusing on the negative and start focussing on the good stuff. Either one will grow into more and more and more and more. So which do you want? Every day for the next week, write down here things that

are absolutely fantastic. It may start out being difficult, especially if you have been stuck in the ‘What’s wrong’ for a while. You can’t write any of the what’s wrong here, only the good things, the things you love around you, or things that are happening in your life or the world that you like. Try writing as many as you possibly can each day for seven days. Again, if it helps do this as a team. What’s going on around me right now that is great? One last thing before we go. Is what you are doing right now leading you towards where you want to go? Ask yourself this question. ‘Will this help take me where I want to go?’ If the answer is no, stop doing it, if it’s yes, then keep doing it.

Thinking “Big” with conviction is essential to achieving successful outcomes “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” These powerful words written by the prophet David and echoed by many brilliant minds, tell us that what we think, and the intensity of that thought, influences the results we achieve. As we start 2015, most people begin the year with New Year’s resolutions. These resolutions often include ‘Big ideas’ and ‘Fresh starts.’ That’s great. But often we get stuck. That’s normal. We don’t always have all the knowledge to achieve successful outcomes. Strategies to achieve that ‘Big idea’ or ‘Fresh start’ may require external knowledge and support. So what do we do? Start a training/education program, source the information we need or engage specialists? Such decisions will have to give consideration to the time, cost and practicalities of our decisions. The ideas for the new house makeover, might require an architect to shape your concepts into a dream home. You may engage a personal trainer to advise and motivate the reconstruction of your new physical self. Perhaps enrol in a creative writing course to support that novel you have always wanted to write. The list is endless. But the big ideas are yours. ‘Big ideas’ that need financing will require specialist support. Engaging a credit advisor is a natural step to

determine the options available to support your fresh starts and big ideas.

A call to your local mortgage broker may be the first important step to achieving your goal. And it is a free service. Mortgage brokers normally deal with residential, investment and commercial loans, as well as plant and equipment needs. If your project needs financing, or you need to release equity from your property, give your local mortgage broker a call. Good luck and believe in that ‘Big idea.’ Make it happen!

Change your thinking about dying, so that you can define your real priorities in your life. You have been given a gift of 86400. It is never too late to make a fresh start, but it starts now, with the next second. What do you choose to do?

‘What happens when people’s New Year turns out to be their last year!’ From this perspective, big thinking changes. Priorities change, when time is limited. It soon becomes apparent, that the greatest gift we have is the gift of time. This gift is presented as 86400 seconds for each one of us every day. What are you doing with your 86400? One way you can make good use of your time, is to have the conversation about death and dying. It is not as crazy as it seems, because once you have dealt with dying you can get on with living, in a more deliberate and determined way. With the bitterness of death in perspective, life becomes sweeter. A perspective on dying, adds great value to the 86400.

A Vision For Change Leading schools have a vision for change in the form of 21st century learning, where the spirit of innovation creates a mindset for the future.

capabilities include; literacy, numeracy, information and communication technology competence, critical and creative thinking, personal and social competence, ethical behavior and intercultural understanding.

Education was modeled on the needs and interests of an Industrial age. In this model, the ability to memorise facts and the mastery of the three Rs was a bench mark of success. Many went to school, then to college or university, where they graduated with a degree, then secured a good job where they stayed for the rest of their career.

In this century, teachers have transitioned from being dispensers of facts to conductors of learning. Through relevant learning experiences, teachers should aim to inspire a culture of inquiry, where students collaborate, innovate and think when applying their acquired knowledge to new situations.

That era has gone, as we now live in an increasingly diverse, globalised, complex and media-saturated society. A degree today doesn’t mean a guarantee of a job and students are faced with the potential of numerous occupations throughout their career. The teacher is no longer the ‘fountain of all facts,’ as Google has now replaced this role. Mastery of the basics - reading, writing and arithmetic are still crucial, however in isolation won’t prepare students to thrive in the 21st century. Schools are preparing students for jobs that do not exist, to solve problems we don’t recognise and use digital technology which hasn’t been invented.

Knowledge is not the memorisation of facts and figures, but is constructed through research and application, and connected to previous knowledge, personal experience, interests, talents and passions. Students require complex skills to direct their learning, to think critically and adapt to a rapidly-changing global society.

Teachers are working with students, whose entire lives have been immersed in a digital media culture. They literally take in the world via the filter of digital devices: smart phones, handheld gaming devices, or notebooks. Students highly value connectivity and instant messaging. Education faces some critical gaps, between the world young people experience outside the classroom and the world within the classroom. Also between the skills students learn in school and those they will need later in life. Living and learning in the 21st century requires new thinking and a strategically-engineered vision. In this century, work on a global level requires thinking, creativity, problem solving, synthesising, communicating, designing and developing new products. The recently released Australian curriculum promotes seven general capabilities, which will assist students to thrive in the 21st Century. These

Twenty-first century learning should aim to teach students to select appropriate digital tools to transform their learning, engage and energise students and inspire deep thinking. It should also develop digital citizenship and students to be informed consumers in our media-rich environment. Innovation is flourishing in the world around us and innovative schools need to have a vision for powerful learning, to prepare our students for their future, not our past.

to the way you hold yourself, and how others perceive you. A simple change - a slightly raised arch or a full ‘strong’ brow, can not only give you a whole new look, but also take years off your eye area. With eye brows being a major focal point, women as early as 750BC knew just how important a shaped brow could be. The Ancient Greek in 800BC sought the look of ‘purity,’ through shaping and lifting their brows - with the help of kohl to darken and enhance, they felt they could achieve a pure, fresh look, which would be appealing to not only to men, but also to their peers and associates. Even earlier in 753BC, Roman women felt they could achieve the look of intelligence with a full strong, yet maintained brow - something I believe all women still strive to achieve today. I believe having the support of the people around you is helpful, especially if they know what your goals are, and what you want to achieve.

My personal goal, like so many others is to lose weight and become healthier. However, what is going to be so different this year? Key projects drive the economic growth of our region Construction projects are driving the economic growth of the Sunshine Coast. Developers are focused on attracting national and international service-based industries, particularly around the Kawana medical precinct, for those looking to locate with the Sunshine Coast Public and Private Hospitals. It is creating ‘green shoots’ of activity across the market and the level of enquiry is an encouraging glimpse into the future for the precinct. Construction on Pratt Property’s two-tower Kon-Tiki project on Maroochy Boulevard is underway. The development will complement its ground floor retail spaces in each tower, with high-calibre office spaces starting from 70sqm to impressive suites, over six floors. These suites are big enough to attract and accommodate larger floor plate users looking to expand or move to a regional area like the Sunshine Coast. Services and knowledge-based businesses are expected to take up this space, once construction is completed in 2016. B and C Grade office space is still great value and easy to come by across the region, including hinterland towns like Nambour. The town’s ongoing revitalisation is mapping well and rates are an average $200 per sqm. Activity and vacancies continue to be relatively

subdued across the Moreton Bay region, as industrial and bulky goods continues to preside over the market. Maroochydore is on track to becoming the business hub of the Sunshine Coast as part of the State Government’s regional growth plans. It is predicted office spaces will be factored into development plans, in a bid to spark interest and attract businesses looking to locate in a regional market. Already, Ocean Street’s rejuvenation has generated enquiries on available office space across the precinct. Occupancy rates are higher than they have been in years, although a number of first floor level vacancies are on the market from 40sqm.

Starting Afresh ~ planning for a new website Often, our website is our first point of call for a potential customer.

6. Find or take photos to be included in your site. NOTE: taking images from Google can be in breach of copyright. Taking your own photos or purchasing royalty-free images is recommended.

It’s our first chance to make a good impression. As design trends and technology change, the need to freshen-up our websites is very important. Even our very own Business Matters Magazine just revamped its website ready for 2015.

7. If you have an existing website and plan to take your website to a new provider, collate all of your existing website logins including Domain name, hosting account and FTP details.

But where do you start? What happens next? Do you already have a site, or are you starting from scratch? Who do you talk to? There are so many things to consider, when starting afresh.

As they say, ‘A change is as good as a holiday!’ A fresh, new website will not only appeal to new customers, it will also strengthen relationships with existing ones.

Here is a quick step-by-step approach to help you freshen-up/plan for your new ‘You-beaut’ website: 1. Research other websites. Make a list of them. Note layout, font, feel, features you like (e.g. slide shows, image gallery, and shopping cart). 2. Identify colours you like and match your branding. 3. Save a high-resolution digital copy of your logo or get a logo designed. 4. Type up a list of the information to include. This will help determine page names and how many pages you will need.

about the author Owner of Web-Sta Affordable Web Design, Karen Ahl blends her passion for local business and creative flair. The result is unique website designs that work for her customers. She has over a decade’s experience in Marketing, Advertising and Branding.

What does your brand say about you? A New Year is a great time for a fresh start! Looking at things with fresh eyes is always a good idea. So here is your challenge for the New Year. Gather together everything that the public sees about your business or product. Everything that is responsible for branding or communicating something about you. This includes business cards, uniforms, car/exterior signage, brochures, advertisements, packaging, invoices/quotes, website etc. Now look at it from the perspective of someone who doesn’t know anything about your business. What is it telling people? Is there a consistent message across it all? Is it instantly recognisable as yours? Everything I mentioned above comes under the banner of ‘Branding’ and a consistent branding message is essential to your business. Let me tell you why. There is an old advertising adage, which states a prospect needs to see or interact with your brand at least seven times, before they take action and buy from you. Now that is an old adage and in today’s fast-paced world that number may well be shrinking, but the principal stands.

When it is time for someone to buy, they will go with someone they recognise and are therefore more likely to trust. If they have seen your brand many times before, then that part of the battle is over. So I ask you, even if they have seen your brand multiple times, is it recognisable as all belonging to the same business? Has your message been consistent enough, that when potential customers identify a need, they think of you? If not, you could be losing sales. Make 2015 the year you consolidate your brand, and get more out of one of your most valuable assets.

Advertising your product or service effectively is a difficult thing in today’s diverse market. It’s hard to know where your precious budget is best spent. Should you spread it across a range of traditional media or target new media exclusively? Which outlets or publications are going to be best for your target market? There are so many options that it is very hard to know what to do. That is where Creative Concepts can help. We examine all the options and develop an effective plan to help you move forward. “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!” - Benjamin Franklin.

Take a look back over the year that was, did you meet your financial goals? Are you where you intended to be financially? The start of a new year, invariably brings new goals. But unless you make those goals a PRIORITY and put a plan into place is it really a goal? You can break the pathway to wealth into the following simple steps: 1. Spend less than what you earn - How many of us are good budgeters?

I know I’m not. So there are other ways, such as forced savings and committing to investments.

2. Invest the difference in good quality growth assets - Shares and property. 3. Owning your own home - It is still the foundation for wealth in Australia? 4. Manage your borrowings wisely - Smart debt is usually debt you are getting a tax deduction for, and it is used to buy an asset, which will grow or produce income. Bad debt offers no tax deduction, or it is buying assets, which diminish or are consumed. 5. Own an investment property. 6. Smart Super strategies.

7. Build a professionally managed share portfolio. 8. Protect your family - Most people insure their house and car. But the biggest asset is you and the income you will earn – it needs to be protected through insurance. There is probably nothing new, in these simple steps, that you don’t already know, but over the coming months, we will look at some new ways of putting it all together.

Flexible Work Arrangements Imagine if your staff disappeared in 2015 - no receptionist to answer customer calls, or CFO to make tough financial decisions, it’s likely your business would cease to function. Employees, your greatest business asset are worthy of investment! Generations X, Y and Z are now self-taught, savvy internet users, with adaptable skillsets. They think global, work all hours and make swift career transitions. The customary fulltime/ part-time/casual workforce has evolved. Secure these entrepreneurial workers, before a competitor does, by offering flexible work arrangements. Your business should become flexible because: • Workers may experience pregnancy, illness, marriage, divorce or elderly parents might need care. People need flexibility when these issues arise. • It prepares your business for unpredictable changes due to employee availability, minimising the impact on operations. • It enhances job satisfaction, which can result in higher quality output and advocacy from employees. • It makes retaining staff easy, even as their circumstances change, so you don’t waste time and money training or recruiting new employees. • It improves productivity; as staff work longer hours from home in addition to managing their time more efficiently, in the office. • It advances workplace gender-balance and successfully challenges gender-based stereotypes. • The management team appears more approachable, so staff are more likely to request leave on a regular basis, as opposed to accruing leave for an extensive holiday period. How to develop a flexible workplace in 2015: 1. Identify duties which must be conducted onsite, due to resource limitations, or completed during specific timeframes. 2. Ascertain what employees want to accomplish out of business hours, then establish a routine for these tasks, to be carried out externally. When you are comfortable with this timetable you can accept ad hoc requests.

46 ISSUE 68

3. Utilise laptops or smart devices, so your staff can work out of the office. 4. Contact your IT team to investigate the best cloud-based technology or online system to access computer networks and servers remotely. 5. Coordinate team projects by sharing calendars online. 6. Utilise automatic scheduling for digital applications such as Facebook posts. 7.

Encourage staff to download apps, such as Salesforce and Microsoft Office 365, on their smart devices to access data when mobile.

8. Explore alternative hours or locations for employees with additional commitments. For example, if parents need to pick up school kids, they could work from home in the evening. 9. Allow staff to work additional hours on specific days, and shorter hours on others to compensate for fluctuating workloads. Take supplementary work-related events into account. 10. Supervise your staff remotely via email, instant messaging or video/ phone conferences such as Skype. Freshen your approach to employment in 2015. Offer flexible work arrangements, so your big business dreams can become a reality.

Management Liability Insurance In 2015, there are some pretty big risks involved in being a Company Director, Partner or Trustee, with onerous duties and responsibilities. If someone thinks you have not lived up to them, rightly or wrongly, there can be serious legal action. No matter what the business, its size or structure, Private Companies, Directors and Officers are exposed to the legal consequences of unintended errors arising from their actions. These range from shareholders who suspect mismanagement, investors who feel they have been misled, trade association investigations, industry regulatory bodies or perhaps a liquidator, if the company is thought to have traded while insolvent. Potential penalties range from hefty fines through to disqualification and possible imprisonment. The need for an immediate and effective response to any threat is clear. Listed companies would not allow their decision makers to be exposed in any way. The potential scope of Management Liability is shown by these scenarios based on actual claims: Directors and Officers Liability provides protection for any claim alleging a wrongful act (for example misrepresentation, negligence, breach of duty) by a Director or Officer. The scope of this policy can include cover for potential breaches such as, Insolvent trading, personal liability, fines, banning orders, environmental prosecution, fire safety regulations, defence to public inquiry and intellectual property breach. Claims Example: A Plaintiff had been engaged by a company to perform work for it. He filed a complaint against the individual directors saying they had utilised his services knowing that the company was nearing insolvency and unlikely to be able to meet the payments required for the work. The directors denied knowing this to be the case. The claim settled for a total settlement and defence costs exceeding $100,000. Statutory Liability: Provides cover for breach of a statutory regulation like an Occupational Health & Safety regulation or the Food Safety Act. The scope of this policy can include cover for potential breaches such as environmental prosecution, Occupational Health & Safety, breach of contract, unfair treatment of shareholders, identity fraud or accidental death.

Claims Example: Health and Safety – A company failed to take practical steps to ensure the safety of an employee. The firm breached an Occupational Health & Safety Regulation and the fine was more than $100,000. This was covered under the Statutory Liability cover, as part of the Management Liability package provides cover for fines and breaches like these up to the selected cover limit. Employment Practices: Cover for claims alleging an employment breach such as discrimination, harassment or wrongful dismissal. Examples of claims, which would fall under this section of the policy, are wrongful dismissal, harassment and discrimination of third parties, unfair dismissal, duress, misconduct, discrimination and constructive dismissal. Claims Example: An Employee of a restaurant claimed she was bullied by the Head Chef, who constantly verbally berated and belittled her. The restaurant eventually settled for $56,000. Management Liability can provide full cover for Employee Practice Liability claims like these, up to the selected cover limit. Other sections which can be included are Legal Liability and Tax Audit cover. Please be aware that any advice offered is general advice only, which has been prepared without taking into consideration your objectives, financial situation or needs. Before deciding to acquire a financial product please consider the Product Disclosure Statement and whether this product is appropriate for your individual objectives, financial situation and needs.

Thinking Big, Fresh Start At the end of 2014, our team reviewed various marketing and engagement strategies we had employed for the past 12 months. Some were great, yielding many new and happy customers and healthy Return On Investment (ROI). Some initiatives however, were not as effective as hoped. As a result, we committed to developing a refreshed vision and plan for customer engagement for 2015, which now includes some very BIG, ambitious and unique strategies to position our business, as the preferred expert resource for our customers. “A Journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.” - Lao Tse The next step for our team to achieve these BIG goals was to develop an action plan, including the allocation of resources (people, time, equipment), a budget and a set of chronological milestones for accountability and measurement. Being realists, we understood that BIG Thinking and goals not supported by an achievable plan are nothing more than wishful thinking. As Benjamin Franklin said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” Now we have our BIG goals and our plan of execution, so it is imperative we take action.

As Sir Isaac Newton expressed it, “An object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an external force.” Our challenge now, and possibly yours too, is to ensure we act on a regular basis in the pursuit of our BIG thinking outcomes. And should we (or you) find after awhile, we are not achieving our goals, perhaps a good place to start our analysis is to question their importance. i.e. Are they really a priority?

After all, “Action expresses priorities.” - Mahatma Gandhi I hope your planned, priority actions support your BIG thinking in 2015.

Bartercard: helping businesses grow on the Sunshine Coast for over 22 years Thanks Bartercard for the last four years. I have bought so many fantastic things on Bartercard including tickets to motivational speakers, holidays, computers, even a pedigree kitten. I pay rent on Bartercard and just recently purchased a property paying the deposit on Bartercard.

The more we investigate the opportunities in Bartercard the more doors open, especially within the hospitality sector. Taking the time to better understand the Bartercard system has shown us how to access revenue previously lost in room nights that would otherwise have expired valueless.

I can honestly say it has been great for my business. Thanks again for your service and always smiling demeanour.

Financial Crisis (GFC) is receding, confidence is building and banks are less cautious about supporting well-researched business ideas. •

It is…for forward looking businesses! January is timely to reflect on where your business is heading. And the good news is there are three reasons for optimism this year. So get cracking on reviewing your action plan for 2015. But be sure it’s based on facts, as well as dreams and ambition. More on those facts later, but first the reasons for optimism on the Sunshine Coast. •

First, there are increasing signals the worst of the economic and political trauma that followed the Global

Second, as the Australian dollar returns to a reasonable level against the American ‘Greenback,’ increasing numbers of local holiday makers will find the tempting overseas trip no longer affordable and stay home. The cheaper Aussie dollar will ensure big increases in overseas holiday makers coming to Australia. Third, the large fall in the price of petrol will cut costs for business and put more spending money into the pockets of average Australians. It will also lower fuel costs for international airlines boosting international visitor numbers even further.

And so to facts, demography and opportunities for 2015! In 2006, the then Federal Treasurer Peter Costello famously said…..”Demography is destiny!” He was spot on, because demographics defines and informs what economists call the ‘Demand side.’ When you know where people live, where they work, how many there are, what income levels, their age and education profiles and whether the area is growing or declining, you are not only spotting a potential for increased business…..you are identifying what risks you might face. I’ll guess you have heard of people, who have been talked into investing a lot of time, effort and resources in a particular area, only to slowly realise it was destined for slow growth, or was not really suited to their products or services.

I think the best way to ‘Grow the Sunshine Coast’ is to encourage LOCAL businesses to expand into larger nearby markets. Isn’t this costly? Not necessarily! Not if the potential customers are as easy to get to as many of the far-flung areas, which make up the Sunshine Coast region.

To test my concept I ran the numbers for population growth across South-East Queensland, for the next six to seven years. Sure enough, although the fastest population growth is in the Inner City and Western Corridor, the LARGEST growth is north and south of Brisbane. Just look at the population projections for the next six to seven years in Table 1.

So I wish you great success in 2015, and if you are ambitious to grow your business, just check what is happening within a 30 to 40 minute drive south of the Sunshine Coast and how you take a share of it.

JACKETS THAT TURN INTO SLEEPING BAGS FOR THE HOMELESS You may have already read our ‘Be the Change’ Conversation on Claire de Lune in this issue of the magazine. We said that we were looking for local and national or international stories. The following is the type of article we would like to find from around the world. If you hear of something please let us know. Business Matters has found this amazing story, which we would like to share with you. It’s about a young lady in Detroit, who is absolutely being the change.

V

eronika Scott is the founder and CEO of ‘The Empowerment Plan.’ Veronika saw that over 20,000 homeless Detroiters bear the frigid Michigan winter each year. One in every 42 people in the city goes without a basic necessity, warmth. Because of this, shelters are often too overwhelmed and under-supported to help every individual in need. Each day, people in need of basic amenities have to fend for themselves on the streets, and in freezing temperatures – thus the difficulty to stay warm is only exacerbated. The Empowerment Plan employs and trains homeless women to become full-time seamstresses, who manufacture a garment, which serves as both a coat and a sleeping bag. The coats the women make are then distributed back to homeless individuals, within the community at no cost to them.

56 ISSUE 68

Through training and steady employment, these women are able to elevate themselves from the cycle of poverty. Within the first few months of working with the program, they actively help these women and their families move off the streets, or out of shelters, by finding them secure, furnished housing. These women have empowered themselves with the confidence and necessary skills for a more sustainable, financially stable and healthier life. This organisation is the result of extensive research done by Veronika. Initially, a class assignment at The College for Creative Studies in Detroit. The project gained outside support due to its disruptive business model and humanitarian agenda. The coat she invented was simple, effective, and ready for production. The Empowerment Plan is unlike the typical non-profit model, because not

only does it run and function like a garment business, it also helps employees to advance themselves professionally, through learning and effectively utilising a unique trade skill. The Empowerment Plan is predominantly supported by donations from private individuals, as well as large corporations and foundations. In the long-term, they hope to function as a one-to-one (buy-to donate) distribution model, which will not only sustain The Empowerment Plan, but aid in the development of an entire garment district in the city of Detroit. They are continually working on remodelling and improving the production facility (a massive building, which was abandoned and neglected for years), to eventually evolve into a full-scale industrial sewing facility. This building, called ‘Ponyride,’ was bought and reenvisioned by Detroit entrepreneur Phillip

bethechange

Cooley, to serve as a space where local artists and organisations could work and share knowledge, resources and networks. Along with the other organisations operating out of Ponyride, they are dedicated to the development and evolution of the city of Detroit. The Empowerment Plan is already beginning to show signs of success, with a goal to produce 6,000 coats this year for orders throughout the country. They try to maintain open communication with the individuals, who receive their coats, and the outreach organisations who order and give them out. This enables them to learn how their coats are working for the people who actually use them on the street. Each of the mothers employed, once homeless, are now living in their own safe, and secure homes with their families. With the help of local organisations, such as Alternatives for Girls and The Coalition On Temporary Shelter (COTS). They are able to provide these women and their families, with the appropriate furnishings for their new homes, such as furniture and other amenities.

In the summer of 2013, they acquired a 3D printer and two computers to use for 3D modelling, on the printer. Their ongoing hope is to train their ladies to use the modelling software and printer, and use the printer to create customised buckles and clasps for coats. In the future, they also have a plan to offer these computers and the printers as educational resources for children in the Detroit Public School system. They are working to implement a type of After School Program, where people can utilise their facility to learn about the new technology. They are currently working with interns and students from the College for Creative Studies, to train their staff in various tech programs and 3D printing. This new arm of their organisation is still under development.

There is a clear link between alcohol-related incidents and alcohol related-violence and levels of intoxication. This is reflected in everchanging government legislation like the Safe Night Out. The message needs to be, the days of going to your local pub or club and ‘writing yourself off’ (becoming highly inebriated) are gone!

Often, we only hear about the bouncer who bashed the innocent patron, but we don’t hear the other side of the story. Security work is a very difficult and thankless line of employment and along with other front line services, it has a high burnout rate, resulting in high staff turnover. LIFE COMES FULL CIRCLE Life for Andrew has certainly come ‘full circle,’ since the recent food packaging awards. Andrew reminisces fondly about the days before Photoshop and computer visualisation tools, when his first role as a Griffith University graduate was to design packaging for Logan Farm Frozen Vegetables, Golden Cob Bird Seed and Home Ice Cream. “That was when I developed my passion for food packaging, which I still have burning inside me today – decades later,” Andrew said. “I still get quite a buzz, when I walk down supermarket aisles in Australia and overseas and see products on the shelves that I designed at some stage of my career.” www.creativeconcepts.com.au

local business with MICHAEL SHADFORTH

According to a research project by Deloitte Access Economics, it is estimated employment across the region will increase from more than 150,000 people to 246,000 in 2031-2032, representing a 59.1 per cent increase over the next couple of decades. Government-funded projects like the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital will continue to create jobs in the construction industry. Transport and Main Roads Minister, Scott Emerson announced

Employment Across Region to Grow plans in August 2014, for a $440 million road project to ease congestion, between Caloundra and Maroochydore. This project is expected to create an additional 2,500 jobs for the region. An injection of $7.1 million to update the Currimundi State Government Recreation Centre will generate about 100 construction jobs throughout 2015. The Illawarra Retirement Trust (IRT) investment of $40 million will create hundreds of tradesmen jobs, during its initial construction phase. It is expected additional permanent positions will be created in the latter part of 2016. Major development projects like Palmview, Parklakes, Bells Reach and Brightwater have been significant contributors in job creation. While new infrastructure is crucial to the region’s development, so is the development and growth of knowledge and professional services industries. The Innovation Centre has supported the startup and growth of more than 100 businesses since its inception in 2002. Located in the ‘Knowledge Precinct’,

investments have been made over the past few years to infrastructure, to help advance the precinct’s development and substantiate the creation of new jobs in new industries. Mayor Mark Jamieson’s recent visit to Silicon Valley opened the doors to the Coast’s bid to becoming ‘Silicon Beach’: an information technology region. Technology industry entrepreneurs like Yvette Adams of The Creative Collective and Ben Duncan of Atmail have long advocated the benefits and growth opportunities, which an IT-rich industry could bring to the region’s economy. Health and aged care, knowledge and professional services are expected to be highly sought after, with these industries becoming major players in employment growth and job creation for the future, across the region.

Why

You now have a clear visual goal, and by comparing yourself to others, you know what you need to do. feature I appreciate they were two very specific examples, and a more general rule-ofthumb for setting Right Brain GOALS would be beneficial. So here you are: G: Your goals must be Glorious. Goals that stand out and motivate you to take action. O: Make your goals Outstanding. We are not talking about your average goals here. We are talking about your Life: Your Legacy. Be proud of what you want to achieve. A: Make your goals Altruistic. There is an interesting quirk in the human psyche, we are often willing to do more for others, than we are for ourselves. Zig Ziglar got it right, when he said: “You can have everything in life you want, if you just help other people get what they want”. L: Make your goals Loud! You should be excited and proud to scream

I hope I have given you some ideas and tools to go forth and achieve. Before I finish, I have one recommendation and two suggestions: If all you want out of goal setting and achieving is to get more of what you already have, you are on the wrong track. Jim Rohn was so right when he said: “Choose a goal not for the goal itself, but for who you will become in the process of getting it.” Along the lines of helping you become more, Roger Hamilton in his YouTube ‘The secret to grow your flow, Episode 11’ (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Own1QH6cayQ) has a very interesting augmenting idea: You should continue to raise your standards, until you achieve your goals. Even with the best map and description you need to regularly pull over, find out where you are, check the directions and get back on track. With a GPS you sit back, relax and let the directions of the GPS guide you. The difference is massive. Massive, in terms of time, energy and reduced stress level. How would you like a GPS for your goal achievement? The best I have come across is Harry Che’s GoalsOnTrack, excellent initiative. Why not try it out for yourself, by checking out website www.GoalsOnTrack.com That’s it folks. Hope there are some ideas, which will help you make 2015 your best year ever! In my next business article, I will expand on how to tie-in corporate goals with recruitment and KPIs, in such a way that everybody is on the same bus, going to the same destination, and nobody is left behind. To your success, Peter.
