Why Why Why?
editor’s note
So why do you do what you do? Why do people choose you? Why should they? What’s your why?
EDITOR’S NOTE with Vickie Magic
What’s your why? When you know why you do what you do, even the toughest days become easier.
If your why isn’t powerful enough, I really don’t believe that you can be as successful as if you’re doing something which you have a powerful why attached to. Business Matters Magazine is a success, I believe, because my why is that I absolutely want to make a difference on the Sunshine Coast. I’m passionate about motivating business owners and business professionals on the Coast and that’s the reason you’ll never read a negative word in the magazine. It’s not accidental, it’s a purposeful why, it’s our vision to be this and a big part of our why. We’re also passionate about education. In business it can be quite difficult to get the education you need for your business. That’s why we want to make sure that every single page of the magazine is content driven, to assure that you’re learning and growing within your business. And our third why is connection. Connection is everything – we want to connect our readers with services and products for their businesses, so that they can support local and support each other. We want to connect our advertisers with each other to form a BM community that shares services, products and ideas with each other. That’s the reason that our Business Matters launches are so successful. Connection is key, not just through the pages of the magazine but through face-to-face connection. People buy a product or a service from someone they know, someone they like, someone they trust. THAT’S WHY!

The Big Question
Why? Why do we do it? Why do we run our own businesses? Why do we work the long hours? Why do we deal with the obnoxious customers? By Paul Barrs We do it because for some reason we find that the greater value is in the purpose or in the pleasure of running our own business. We find that what we receive from it is far greater reward than the long nights that we suffer through it. In essence, we do it because it makes us feel good. Why, then, do our customers do what they do? Why do they search for things online? Why do they scour the internet? Why do they, in a perfect world, visit our websites, review our products, look at our services and then perhaps contact us? They, like us, do it because at some point it will help them feel good. It will solve a problem. It will provide an opportunity. It will enable them to do something they hadn’t been able to do before. Whatever their individual reasons or purposes, it simply comes down to this. They trust us when they do business with us, believing that then having left us, their lives will be at least a little bit better. The question for you now is: Is it? One of the most common problems I see when reviewing business websites online today is that the information and content is presented in such a way as to showcase what the business owner wants people to see. At face value this seems like a good idea. However from a customer’s point of view, it’s not always so. If a customer is to spend the time looking through our products and services to answer a need or solve a problem and find a solution they’re after, we should make it as easy as possible for them to find what they
6 ISSUE 65
want, not just have us show what we want. In an ideal world we should merge the two of them together. So let’s talk for one moment about the home page of your website and why it’s set out in such a way. First things first – when someone arrives on your home page and they look at the section on their screen called ‘above the fold’ (before they scroll down), they should feel within three to five seconds an impression of who you are and what you do. This is done through images and through text and, of course, colour.
Here is the first opportunity for you to connect at a deeper, more emotional level with your customer. They either like you in an instant or they don’t; if they don’t, they may scroll down for just a moment, but not likely. Chances are they’ll have a quick glance, read one or two things and then leave. If they like what they see, they’ll scroll down and within the first glance of that page it’s so vitally important that you capture their attention with a strong headline. This headline can be presented in the text or within an image. Be careful if you choose to use a sliding image with multiple pictures,
feature because this dilutes the strength of your message. In fact, research shows it does not help your conversions at all. I recommend one strong image with a captured headline, which illustrates in a second what it is that you do and what they will get from doing business with you. Then, as they scroll down, they should be presented with your primary products and services. This is the meeting of two minds. This is what you want them to see. It’s also, hopefully, what they’re looking for. The content on your home page should be based on your assessment of your most valuable products and services as a business, the ones that your customers are most likely to be looking for. They are for you the most profitable opportunities. They are for the customers the things they want most. These can be presented in just a few paragraphs, perhaps one, two, or three columns illustrating what they offer, illustrating what you offer and how they can get it. Here’s the rule. Everything that your customers are looking for should be able to be found within one click of your home page – just one click, no more. If they’re looking for it, show it to them. Give it to them. Make it easy. But the exception to the rule is this: do not clutter your home page with everything. Showcase your primary products or primary services. What is the 20% of your business that provides you with the 80% of your income? What are your core products? Showcase these.
These are the rules for a very simple home page!
When customers come to you, they have a question, they have a need and they have a desire. They have a want. You have to answer it in an instant. What are they after and why? Think of it from this point of view. What do my customers want and what else might they also want, related to this? That’s how you drive your content. It’s not about you. It’s about them. Lastly, wrapping up – the most important thing, of course, is a good strong call to action. It’s nice to ask people to read things, but you also have to ask them to do things. Do this and your conversions should increase overnight.

TOP WAYS to find your Why even if you may have lost it along the way By Steve Goodman You all know the drill. You’re at a cocktail party or networking event and the inevitable question comes up, “And what do you do?” However the much more important question is not what you do, but why you do it. If you stop to really think about it, in your career or your life for that matter, it’s really not about what makes you happy,
but why those things make you happy. The problem is most of us just go for the ‘what’ first and if we’re lucky, wind up with something that does make us feel fulfilled. However when it comes to finding your ultimate purpose in life, you need to start with your ‘why.’ Your why is what you believe in, your passions, that thing that motivates and drives you to take action. But whys are often not thought about or they can be elusive, so here are 10 ways to discover or re-discover your why. 1. Ask yourself what is your greatest passion – What is it that really drives you and motivates you? Is there something that you really feel strongly about that you’ve been afraid to articulate, even to yourself? The word ‘inspire’ comes from the Latin ‘to breathe’ or literally, to be alive. So what inspires you, what makes you feel alive? 2. Barriers and Obstacles – Evaluate what’s holding you back from achieving your dreams in life. Fear? Have you put labels on yourself that hinder you, such as, ‘I’m too old, I lack talent?’ etc. 3. Your Inner Strengths – The other end of the spectrum of
barriers is what are your greatest strengths? Everyone is great at something. What are things you’ve always found easy that others struggled with? Like a fish in water, when you’re doing something that plays to your strengths, you’re in your element. Take a free strengths survey at: http://www.viacharacter.org 4. Your Education – This may sound like a no-brainer, but what did you train for? Most of us really knew what we were passionate about in college – college students have a pretty good grip on their whys. But are you getting the most out of your education? Are you using your degree in the career you hoped for when you began your studies? 5. Your Environment – The clues to your why may be right under your nose! Walk around your house like you are a detective – what paintings, nick-nacks, photos and furnishings do you see? The things you surround yourself with will reveal much about your why. 6. When I grow up I want to be… – Maybe a few of us actually grew up to be princesses or astronauts, but seriously, think back to what you said you wanted to be when you were a kid. It may still tell you a lot about your why. 7. If there was no failure – Fear of failure is what keeps many people from pursuing their why. Close your eyes and answer this question – “If there was absolutely no chance of failure, I would…” 8. Regrets – Think of your last day on earth. Imagine you’re on your deathbed and answer the question, “If only I had done…” The thing you feel you’d regret most not having done is closely related to your why. 9. Evolution and Experience – While it is true that much of your why is tied to your guts, that core feeling, you must also recognize that it evolves and changes over time with your experiences. Experiences both good and bad will help you see how your why grows and evolves.

10. Time is Relative – Not only from an Einstein perspective, but for your why. You’re never too young or too old to recognize your passion and find your purpose in life. Also, understand that your why may not reveal itself to you until the time is right! Here is an additional way to find your why. Take a blank piece of paper and write on the top of it,
‘What is my purpose in life?’ Write down the first answer that comes into your head. Then keep writing down answers till you get to the one that makes you choke up and brings tears to your eyes – that’s your why. Another way to look at your why is what used to be referred to as your calling in life. It’s the answer to that ultimate question of “Why am I here? For what reason?” But people often get confused by thinking that a calling needs to be something huge, some grand world-changing purpose. It doesn’t, it merely needs to change your life, your future for the better – and that starts with understanding your why.

Why have these two diverse local business owners conceived a new online learning series for new parents? Baby & Me: Survive Develop Thrive is an exclusive online learning series for new parents, grounded in child development knowledge and the importance of community support. Developed as a partnership between two Sunshine Coast businesses, Settle Petal and Innovate Media, the series is set to launch nationwide on 1st October 2014. But why are these two total opposite business owners conceiving a new business here on the Coast? Recently, owner of local business Innovate Media, Ben Amos and his partner were expecting their second child and knew that to make things as easy as possible, they needed some support. As a couple, they reached out to Jan Murray, an experienced child health nurse to help support them along their second journey of parenthood. From the first meeting an
idea was sparked between the two, Ben running a successful video production company and Jan is a very experienced child health nurse… so what could be created between the two of them if they collaborated? What could these total opposite people produce between each other with their expertise? That’s when Baby & Me was conceived and work began to help it grow and form into an online learning series for new parents. Jan Murray, Child Health Nurse, author and creator of Baby and Me says, “Through the website we aim to equip parents with the right knowledge about their baby’s development at the right time. To be a proactive learning tool rather than a reactive resource, that is only used when parents are struggling for answers.”
When asked why there is a need for Baby and Me, Jan says, “Having a baby can be both exhilarating and scary but being armed with a basic understanding of what to expect at different stages of development helps parents feel more in control. ”Baby & Me focuses on the typically developing infant, from birth to 12months of age, and addresses expectations that centre on infant feeding, sleeping, and developmental changes.
Aligning parenting choices that fit with specific stages of infant development increases opportunities to achieve positive outcomes for children and their families. The Baby & Me program aims to encourage and guide parents during the first year with their baby in the hope that many of the problems that cause parents stress may now be reduced early. Baby & Me Survive Develop Thrive is designed to be a proactive resource to empower parents to make age appropriate decisions for the progressive development of their babies, to seek further help if needed, and to

make age appropriate decisions for the progressive development of their babies, to seek further help if needed, and to feel supported through a moderated community forum. Jan’s Why started since she began raising her family in remote areas of Australia, she gained a desire to help new parents that were unable to reach child health services. Parents with babies are often isolated and floundering for direction, and when there is no one to reach out to, parenting can be overwhelming.
an understanding of specific stages of development. It consists of 18 modules spread over the first 12 months of a baby’s life. Modules can be purchased in bundles of 4month lots (allowing for staggered age starting times) or for the
membership or there is the opportunity to only belong to the forum. The forum is visited regularly to answer questions and screen inappropriate comments to ensure parents feel it’s a safe place to visit and to leave feeling uplifted not judged. Baby & Me feels that parenting a new baby is a lot about being confident when making decisions and finding a mentor to follow.

Baby & Me: Survive Develop Thrive is an online initiative birthed out of witnessing what these changes have done and continue to do to the security of a developing infant and the confidence of parents. Baby & Me’s ‘why’ is to empower parents to make confident choices in caring for their babies and not to leave them confused and disillusioned. WHY DO WE DO WHAT WE DO? WHAT IS OUR MOTIVATION? Business Matters speaks to Genevieve Hudson from Sunshine Coast Grammar. We asked her to share her why. My husband Simon and I arrived on the Coast sixteen years ago, with two young school-age children. Like most new arrivals we didn’t know anyone. Being a teacher, I knew what sort of school I wanted and what types of teachers I should be able to have for my own children.
At sixteen I chose to train to work in an industry where business success is not measured in terms of financial returns and profit margins. It’s an industry where strategic planning, vision and mission statements focus on customer satisfaction, relationships, trust and valuing of professional learning for clients and staff. Everyone in this business is consciously aware that we’re all working towards achieving the same outcomes. The hours are long, the pay has slipped behind many other industries over the past decades but the personal rewards are enormous. It’s hard work emotionally, but even tiny successes become huge rewards. Which industry, you ask? Education, of course!
I found a school that offered what I would expect from a good school. I had planned to be a lady of leisure for a while, but I loved my children’s school so much that I set about trying to win a teaching position there. In the absence of friends and family the school community filled the void of loneliness. Staff cared about us and took an interest in us. We felt part of an extended family. Sixteen years later most of our families who arrive on the Coast have relocated from overseas or interstate, and need the same care and family support that was offered to us. It’s incredibly rewarding to assist these families to make friends, settle into the community and fill a void. People whom you introduced to one another years earlier often remain best friends years later. This is so rewarding. I haven’t even listed the huge rewards in assisting children to learn to read, write, solve problems, learn how to be a friend, become
school leaders and eventually leave school to embark on life’s adventures. I work with people who are passionate about what they do to improve the educational outcomes and lives of the children and the families they work with. Being able to support our staff to be inspired to keep abreast of the latest curriculum developments and the most effective educational practice is a significant motivator. There’s always something to improve on, and a thirst for best practice is a key driver in all we do. When I was in primary school my mother would often tell me I was going to be a teacher. She said the holidays were good and the pay was even better. I felt a sense of obligation to her and I wasn’t really sure if I even wanted to. Who would have known that 32 years later I’m still doing it? I wish I could tell her the holidays are for the children and the pay doesn’t match the responsibilities. However, the rewards gained can come from little things like seeing a small child smile after wiping tears away, their excitement at making a sudden new discovery, making a new friend, telling a mum about something special her child has accomplished, the realisation that a new discovery or skill has been mastered. These rewards are unsurpassed.
Author Martin Seligman says authentic happiness comes from helping others. He’s right. And that’s why teachers do what they do, and that’s why I’m still doing it. It’s called passion with a purpose. 16 ISSUE 65

Why Rob Cross is not
YOUR AVERAGE BDM
Rob is a slightly crazy individual who for his 50th birthday celebrations came up with a slightly more challenging experience than the normal kneesup.
Instead he decided to do 5 events over 5 weeks on the Sunshine Coast to celebrate 5 decades and to show that at any age we are ‘never too old to’. For some reason unbeknownst to anyone but himself he decided that to put his poor wee body through an amazing set of gruelling physical challenges over five weeks would be a good idea.
Rob Cross brings his attitude to his position as Business Development Manager and provides construction and corporate clients with SAFE solutions that provide value to any tender. Rather than simply providing a quote Rob hopes to develop a business relationship to save you money, ensure compliance and benefit your business and/or needs. The tenders that Rob completes include major asbestos removal projects for schools, government buildings, large scale demolition projects and soil remediation.
Rob has completed in five weeks; The Kawana Park Run, Tough Mudder, The Sunshine Coast Marathon, Wishlist Row for Cancer and last but not least the Sunshine Coast Ironman last weekend.
SAFE Asbestos actively promotes healthy lifestyles, and with the encouragement of Rob and the business owners Dean and Lee Churcher, several members of staff are participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer next year as a team. For the past two years Dean and Lee have completed the Ride to Conquer Cancer raising substantial funds for QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute as a part of the local Caloundra F@CK CANCER team.
Rob strongly believes that you are ‘Never 2 old 2’ compete in the fun fit events and encourages everyone, no matter their age to get involved. He even has his own website. Check it out.
The latest addition to the SAFE fleet; a remodelled bus with a functional fit out that accommodates five people, a complete bathroom and a kitchen! This is the ultimate support vehicle
SAFE Asbestos Management would all like to congratulate Rob on his spectacular achievements and also wish him a Happy Birthday. We are still all shaking our heads in amazement.

WHY – THE ORIGINAL SEARCH ENGINE Why is the answer. Why is our personal search engine and processor that leads our pathway to new discoveries and truth. Discovering your own Tao starts by asking why. Our natural learning and creative DNA process in childhood is being inquisitive and imagining why things are as they are.
businessmentoring
being created, why should potential markets and customers care? Likewise, managing a business and expecting growth is answered by exploring why. Market fit, value proposition, market size and management skill are key components determining business success. Why do customers buy from us, why do customers perceive value in our products or services, why is this market suitable to scale the business and why do you think you have the required skill set, experience and acumen to grow this business? Why is the path to this truth. WHY MANAGEMENT PROCESS?
Unfortunately as life progresses beyond childhood, so much individual creativity is squashed and re-programmed into conformity. Education systems kill creativity and constrain why. Children are banned from practising cartwheels, creativity and expression are squashed. Achieving an MBA is no guarantee for starting a millionaire business. Why?
To solve a problem, ask why. The Toyota Corporation was built on why. Sakichi Toyoda, inventor and founder of Toyota Industries, developed the 5 Whys technique in the 1930s, which is still used to solve problems today. The 5 Whys is simple. When a problem arises, simply keep asking the question why until you reach the underlying source of the problem. Why? The pump stopped working. Why? The motor overheated. Why? The bearings seized. Why? The bearings were incorrectly fitted. Why? The fitter failed to read the instruction manual. Solution – improve the induction process for maintenance personnel.
WHY PLAN?
WHY YOU?
Planning a new business is a process of asking why. Why is this business
Finding your own why in life and business is challenging, given that
creativity DNA is rarely encouraged and conformity mitigates risks of greatness, not failure. Truth is, whenever a rebel talent or disruptive new product or business emerge we welcome them as saviours and heroes, emerging to enchant us with true passion, creative uniqueness and new value. Rebels and misfits ask, “Why not?” Great businesses and leaders find insights by seeking out why. Why is what creates belief. Customers want to believe that your business is ethical, that they will receive the best value and service. Customers don’t only buy what you do, they buy why. To get to why, a business needs to gain insights to customers’ pain and purpose and articulate why the business does what it does, starting with a powerful value proposition. Avoid the default of telling what and how and learn to articulate why.

Intuition Plus Where Magic Happens
A local business with a big difference! Vikki Speller has a passion to help make a difference in the world. The spiritual healing path is not something I actively sought at first, so why did I decide to follow it? It actually chose me and I have to say it has been the most fulfilling journey of my life. I am committed through my healing sessions to inspire people and above all else, empower them to be the best version of themselves they possibly can be. I offer not only beautiful healing sessions and guidance but also the opportunity for like-minded people to come together, discover, develop and practise their intuitive gifts in a safe and supportive environment. There are many reasons why clients come to see me – not only when

they are struggling but also as a form of relaxation and self-caring. It is truly beautiful to be entrusted to guide them through different stages of their lives and to reset and balance their energy system. It is so rewarding to be able to be a channel for this transformational process. I don’t believe it is all me, I believe it is spirit working though me with the person to facilitate a kind of selfhealing. I am merely a conduit for this purpose, but a very grateful one at that. Why do my clients keep coming back? It’s because I offer much more than just your standard Reiki healing session, as I am also a psychic/medium – often having psychic information come through or passed-over loved ones pop in with important messages.
It’s such a beautiful experience to witness the relief and gratitude on my clients’ faces when they recognise their relative or friend in spirit. It brings so much comfort to them when they receive irrefutable confirmation that our loved ones continue to watch over us, showing that love is eternal. This is my why for doing what I do, and the most important message I can share.

I’m a pretty lucky guy. Working in and owning car dealerships over the last 35 years, I’ve had a great choice of cars to drive. The new Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland is my daily drive and this latest model is just stunning. Besides the looks and style it’s just packed with so many features that it’s pretty awesome not only too look at but to drive too. I haven’t taken it off road as yet generally limiting it between my home
Cars I’ve driven lately at Redcliffe and a weekly trip up to Peachester to our ‘country’ place. And here’s a question that most won’t be able to answer. You’ll be right in thinking that the Jeep is built in the USA, but what about its main rivals. Mercedes Benz and BMW Germany? No, they’re built in the USA as well. Audi Q7 - in Germany right? Nope - Slovakia but you’d be right in thinking the Range Rover is still built in the United Kingdom. Technology - ABS,ESC,ASTC, ERM. ACC, BSM, EDM, RCP, Parkview, Parksense, and 7 SRS air bags. What’s this all mean - SAFETY with a capital S - If you want to know what this Alphabet of letters means, jump on and
have a look at www.northstarchrysler. com.au for the explanation. Verdict –Let’s just say it’s a really nice 4wd priced up to $30,000 under the competition - Mercedes Benz ML, Audi Q7, BMW X5, Range Rover Sport, with arguably as much or more safety, comfort and convenience features. So if you’re sensible and not a badge buyer, you can have a Grand Cherokee Overland, drive it for 4 years and even with the investment in services, tyres, insurance and fuel, you’re probably going to be still in front.

MOTOR GROUP BM speaks to Bob Aldons from Northstar Motor Group. We asked Bob why he does what he does and why he loves it, and why he has a vision to re-locate to the Sunshine Coast? Bob said, “I’ve been in the motor business in Redcliffe since 1978 because I enjoy the people - both customers and staff that I’ve worked for and with over these last 36 years. Customers like Bob and Glenys Hall from Wynnum who have purchased all their cars both personal and business from me since that first year - 1978. It’s the challenge of meeting the expectations of customers just like them and forming life-long friendships. It’s about providing a service that they arguably can’t get anywhere else.
It’s about trust, community and lifestyle - when you earn the trust of your customers, adapt and involve in the community, you achieve a lifestyle not only for your customers, but for yourself as well.
I also love the adrenalin of the chase chasing the targets that manufacturers such as Volkswagen and Fiat Chrysler set. It’s about achieving national recognition for a job well done and the fringe benefits that the auto industry provides. This year we went to Brazil for the World Cup, last year to New Orleans for the Superbowl and lots more - Thailand, Austria, Germany, Japan, USA - the list goes on. This is a big part of my why? I’ve been fortunate, but it’s the old story - the harder you work the luckier you get. No-one gifted success to me - I didn’t have a silver spoon it’s just been hard work and being fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. My wife Suzi and I are blessed to live on the waterfront on the Peninsula but also have a country retreat at Peachester. We find ourselves spending more and more time there. It’s the openness, the air quality and the friendliness of the people that will cause us to re-locate our family home to Peachester and use Redcliffe as our weekender, but we can’t do that without our customers and our team. A big thank you to both.”

FIVE TIPS TO KEEP YOUR BUDGET ON TRACK Sorting out a budget is the easy part, but sticking to your budget takes dedication, commitment and a little bit of sacrifice. For the best chance of success, follow these tips below.
could be better spent elsewhere. Those $5 morning coffees could be sacrificed for a make-it-yourself version from home.
1. NEGOTIATE BETTER DEALS
Sticking to a budget alone can be hard work. Share your budget with your family and encourage everyone to get involved, even the kids. Give them each a piggy bank and encourage them to save. If you have a very colourful social life, it would be a good idea to get your friends in on it too.
Don’t be afraid to talk to your bank or your suppliers if you’re in business about lowering your interest rate on your loan or getting a discount on your goods. Just by asking for a better interest rate on your business or home loan you could save thousands every year. A discount of just 0.5% in interest on a $500,000 loan will save you $2,500 every year! Alternatively, you could just get an expert to do this for you and potentially save you thousands in interest, and even reduce your repayments and the term of your loan. Debt Relief Hotline specialises in debt management and has saved thousands of dollars in interest for clients. 2. FOCUS ON SAVINGS
If your budget is functioning properly, you might find you have some extra cash left over at the end of the week. Rather than spoil yourself for doing such a good job, put this money in a high interest savings account. This way, if you ever get into financial trouble or need some cash in case of an emergency, you can borrow from yourself and not from the bank. 3. CUT BAD HABITS Now you’ve established your budget, you will have seen where all your money is going and you are bound to have noticed some areas worth cutting back on. While smokers are the biggest offenders in this category, there are more innocent habits which are costing you money. For example, $30 a week on celebrity gossip magazines
4. SHARE THE LOAD
5. KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS AND REPORT REGULARLY The price of petrol changes each week, as does the cost of living and maybe even your income. Always keep track of how much you are spending on regular items like petrol and if you notice the cost increases, make an allowance for this in your budget. Ensure you have internet banking associated with your bank account. This will allow you to check in regularly to monitor your spending. At the end of each week, run a report over your budget and assess your bank account. Are you on track? Did you over spend? Are there more areas you can cut back on? If you think you may need some budgeting or debt negotiation help, talk to a specialist. Remember, the best advice is to act quickly.

“YOUR DAYS BECOME EASIER WHEN YOU KNOW WHY YOU DO THE THINGS YOU DO!” What’s your WHY? It almost feels this question has been done to death, but interestingly enough, so many people still don’t have an answer! For 50 per cent of people it’s “because I have to,” but do you? If it’s really not leading to your deep-seated WHY, you may find you wouldn’t do it at all. What compels you to get up and go to work each day, to do things you don’t want to and to put up with your boss, peers etc? Everyone needs some motivation to keep on track and it has to be a clear image. So what is your WHY? Now you may be starting to understand your personal why is the reason you do the job you do etc, but I’m going to write about – ‘What is your other why?’ I bet you didn’t know you needed two whys, did you? Maybe some people have more whys than they have discovered yet! And as we know, life is a journey, but when you ask the hard question you have to start to look at the really honest answer.
“When you are prospecting, focus on what your business can do for that prospect. Focus on helping, teaching, and giving back. It will make a difference in your success, which in turn will help you reach your personal whys.” - Matthew McAlpine Keep focusing on your whys… When we have a goal on which to focus, our life tends to reorganise itself around making it happen. The resources, solutions and answers start to appear. We would love to help make your goals a reality. Please call today!
So the why we will be discussing is WHY does your business exist? Why would prospective clients use your business, why do you offer the products you do, why would someone want to work for you, why will customers benefit from doing business with you? These questions are very different from your personal whys – eg why I want to work from home, why I want to work in marketing etc. For us, our business why is because we want to help people run successful businesses through training and education to increase profits/productivity/happiness by working on themselves and their business. What’s your business WHY?

COLIN DICK DYING TO UNDERSTAND
WHAT IS IT ABOUT LIVING THAT MAKES IT SO ATTRACTIVE? As a doctor and oncologist I work to keep people alive. I have seen hundreds of people submit themselves to the harshness of chemotherapy and radiation because they want to live. As terrible as the treatment may seem, it offers the hope of cure and the fact is that no one wants to die. Even those people who boldly state that they are ready to die have a change of heart when the big event approaches. We all desperately want to live.
enjoy a friendly handshake even if the arthritis in our hand protests. We are creatures of touch and emotion. We are addicts of hope and love. That is we why we live - because it feels good! It is also why we cannot bear the thought of dying. We are unable to relinquish our emotions and untie the powerful emotional bonds we have with those we love. The thought of not feeling is unacceptable, so we cling onto life.
I have many conversations about dying in general. A common statement that people make is, “I don’t want to live until I am eighty-five – I want quality and not quantity in life.” When we are young and virile, old age seems like an impossible and unwanted task, yet I hear no eighty-five year olds saying they are ready to give up on life. We all want to live, regardless of the frailty that comes with age. The obvious question is why?
But what if there is an emotional experience after death? This changes our ‘why’ to a ‘what if.’
What if we don’t end and don’t stop feeling? What if we don’t have to say goodbye forever?
If you visit an aged care home, it is clear to see that old age is a terrible affliction associated with enormous loss. We lose our independence and need transport to and from our medical appointments and bathroom. We lose sight and hearing. We lose vitality and even worse, our libido. We are unable to chew or taste our food. We put up with aches and pains, pills and potions knowing that things won’t ever get better. There is little dignity when someone has to feed you, or when incontinence plagues you and you need to wear a nappy. As bad as it gets, life is still worth living.
There is compelling evidence to suggest an emotional and spiritual existence after physical death. Death is not the dreaded end, but rather a doorway into an ongoing emotional experience. SHARI KROME + JODIE BERNDT TONIC MOBILE APPS
WHY INVEST IN A MOBILE APP FOR YOUR BUSINESS? I can envisage a few readers groaning about now – here we go, another piece of technology to get my head around – I’ve only just conquered SEO, social media and responsive websites!
When used wisely, this leads to increased revenue per customer and brand loyalty.
Having 20 years in advertising, we’re very excited about the direct connection to customers a mobile business app can provide.
• Alert users to last minute line-up changes at a festival
Unlike radio, TV and early mobile phones, the smartphone has become an extension of our digital brain.
• Reminders
We are evolving to the point where we no longer wear watches to tell the time, we no longer carry cameras to take pictures, and time spent in front of computers is losing out to time spent on smartphones and tablets. The smartphone is an indispensable personal device unlike anything humankind has ever created. When it beeps, we respond. When it loses its power, we nourish it. Once it is fully charged, we feel ready to take on anything life throws at us. When customers download your mobile business app to their smartphone, you literally have access to them 24/7 – you’ll be with them at the breakfast table, while they work, on their drive home and as they spend their leisure time. That’s getting closer to the customer than any other communication channel ever created. Unlike radio, TV, print and even web, there is no middle-man who controls the access to the customer.
You can engage directly with your customers, anytime, anywhere, building stronger relationships. It’s a revolution! One of the most powerful features offered in a mobile business app are push notifications. With a push-enabled app you can reach out and deliver value at the right time and the right place – even when your app is closed on their phone!
Push notifications can: • Announce a newly anticipated product • Exclusive offers and discounts … anything your customer will perceive as of value. Another exciting feature of push notifications is using geo-fenced notifications. These are location-enabled notifications sent when users enter a specific ‘fenced’ area. For example when a customer is within 100m of your business they receive a notification. These can be time activated deals, discounts, new items etc. They are a great way to fill empty restaurant tables and appointment slots or to simply entice your customers back to your premise. So WHY invest in a mobile business app? - the opportunity to instantly engage and provide your customers with a rewarding experience 24/7 at a cost effective price is in our opinion invaluable.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS With a background in Advertising & Design, Shari Krome and Jodie Berndt have been helping businesses grow their revenue and brand perception for 20+ years. For example you may use $130,000 to purchase an investment property worth $600,000 (with tenants paying off the remaining debt over time); you may invest $100,000 in shares, and have the balance of $20,000 in an interest attracting cash investment. PETER CHICO JONES PARTNERS INSYNC
WELCOME TO YOUR NEXT EX-PARTNER This was a saying we had in beach volleyball when we formed a new team. Seems harsh, but it’s the truth. At some point in time the partnership was going to end. So why not put it on the table early? Why not admit this fact of life and get on with being the best team you could be?
know what your business partner would say? Wouldn’t it be reassuring to know that your partner is aware of your end-game? And wouldn’t it be great to know that they are on your team and working with you to achieve this for you? Vice versa, of course.
Let’s face it. There are no guarantees in business. No guarantees but a multitude of factors that all have an impact on your success or failure. If you are in a partnership, the ONLY guarantee, yes the ONLY guarantee you can bank on is the fact that your partnership will end one day.
And what about a partnership split? How would you prefer to split – amicably or non-amicably? Silly question, right? So if we assume that you just said ‘amicably’, tell me, what are you doing to ensure this? What efforts are you taking to ensure that you and your partner stay on the same page? If you’re leaving it to chance, you’re playing a high stakes game that’s fraught with danger (just ask any of the 80% of business partnerships that end badly). This should not be a chance thing. This should be a CHOICE thing.
Ask not, ‘will it end?’ Instead, ask ‘how do I want it to end?’ According to Adrian Read of Stream Financial, there are 8 possible scenarios:
4. Non-performance of one of the partners
Just as you make a business plan for the life of your business, create an exit strategy that reflects the choices that you and your partner make about the inevitable end of your business partnership. Your partnership ending does not have to be a bad thing. However, history shows that they often do get bad, especially when those involved failed to plan and prepare for the personal experiences.
5. External factors involving spouse/family
So try this:
6. Total/Permanent disability
Shake your business partner’s hand next time you see them and say, “G’day next ex-partner.”
1. Retirement of one or all partners 2. Amicable split 3. Non-amicable split
7. Trauma 8. Death Somewhere in the life of your partnership, one of these things will occur – it’s a given. Are you ready for either of them? Better still, are you ready for ALL of them?
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
For now, let’s put scenarios 5-8 on the sideline. These are things that we cannot control, although we should take steps to prepare for them. However, we do have a level of influence over scenarios 1-4. Upon retirement, what do you want in your heart, your head and your bank account? Do you know what they are? Do you

ANDREW LANG INSTITUTE OF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
ORGANISE A SUCCESSFUL PLANNING MEETING Holding a planning meeting should be an exciting event – a chance to think about the future, put ideas on the table and generate action. I often hear that the day started well, but ran out of steam and nothing concrete came out.
PROCESS – go from ideas to action. One of my favourite planning processes is Explorer to Warrior:
Follow a few simple guidelines to make sure you get the most action from your event.
2. Artist – expand on an idea, what are the impacts, the effort, the possible results. Invite others to contribute to this.
Objective – have a clear and specific objective for the session. What future event do you want to work on? Who are the right attendees? Often it is better to bring in new people at different stages to help move from strategy to action.
4. Warrior – convert the idea to an action plan – who, what, when.
Preparation – the best planning events I have seen are those where people have prepared. The event shouldn’t start on the day. Send the agenda out well in advance. Rather than bullet points, send questions, ask people to research – internet, colleagues, etc. Environment – hold your event away from the office to give people a chance to focus on the future, not the day-to-day. Set the room up properly – round tables rather than boardroom, go low tech and focus on the discussion and people, take lots of breaks and eat well!
1. Explorer – generate a list of ideas, focus on quantity and do not judge.
3. Judge – determine criteria – easy to do or best ROI or quickest result. Choose. There is plenty to keep in mind to make your planning event a success, and the impact on your business by doing it correctly can be enormous.

engagement matters
DAVID CHAMBERLAIN EXPRESS PRINT & MAIL
REAL CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT WHAT’S THEIR WHY? I would think that most business owners and leaders have a pretty clear idea of their why for running a business, developing relationships, pursuing success, however you define it, and overcoming challenges.
2. Are we actually offering our market what they want? Quality product? Excellent service? Value pricing? Flexible opening hours? Street Cred? On-line support? All of the above?
However when it comes to engaging with your target market, it’s essential to also understand your customers’ why. What is their motivation for engaging with your business? Why would a woman, man, child, retiree or business decision maker want to connect with your business and brand over another supplier in the market? And equally as important, sometimes more, why wouldn’t your market want to associate with your brand?
3. Is there anything else we can do to align, value add or innovate to better match our offering to the wants of our market? (Continuous assessment and improvement.)
As Zig Ziglar quoted on many occasions You can have everything in life you want if you help enough other people get what they want. So I suppose the key questions to ask of yourself and your business are: 1. Do we know who our market is and what they really want? (If not, we better work it out ASAP!)
Perhaps a good way to start is by simply asking your customers what they want from your business, what they like and what they don’t like about your brand, business, sales process, operational standards etc. Because at the end of the day, the more we can offer what our target market wants, the more demand will be created. And in general, more demand = more sales = more profits = helping you achieve your why.

BERNIE DUFFY PHPERFECT PTY LTD
SIMPLE SCIENCE BEHIND WHY YOU NEED ALKALINE WATER To start with, we can’t burn fuel on Earth without a trade-off. In other words, if you burn a piece of wood the fire is the energy created and smoke is the trade-off. The same process applies within the body. Every moment we’re alive we’re burning energy. The trade-off is called oxidation. Energy burnt causes a reduction of electrons in an atom, molecule or ion. When oxidation is not neutralised in the body this leads to oxidated stress, which leads to free radical accumulation, which leads to lipid peroxidation. This is the pathogenesis to almost every degenerative disease. In his research, scientist Dr Bruce Ames (who was credited with taking the monkey out of the lab and experiments went into the test tube) counted how many times a cell used energy during an average day, and he called this an oxidated hit. He estimated over 10,000 oxidated hits per cell per day. When you consider the body makes over a billion T cells per day when fighting a virus, multiply that by 10,000, plus all the other cells in our body, times 10,000 and you have a lot of oxidation to neutralise. The science to support alkaline water comes from Dr Michael Serafin; “If you have a health problem, you are most likely to be acidic. Research shows that unless the body’s pH level is slightly alkaline, the body cannot heal itself,” and Dr Theodore Baroody; “The countless names attached to illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause – too much tissue acid waste in the body.”
Do you know anyone who would spend say $150,000 on a new car and not service that car to prolong its use and value? Well, large portions of our population are unknowingly doing exactly this to their bodies, and this is called the ‘hypnosis of social conditioning.’ Let me explain: Western medicine evolved from the Greeks who mixed potions; hence all the drugs in that realm. They diagnose and treat the symptoms of a disease. In other words, when the ‘car’ breaks down we’ll develop a drug to fix it. (Sadly, there is not a drug that doesn’t have a side effect). Go out in the street and ask the average Aussie, “Are you healthy?” and the majority will answer, “Yes.” You’ll be able to see that some will walk with a slight limp, are overweight, the whites of their eyes are red etc. and yet they don’t go to a doctor until they absolutely have to. If their car was this sick, it would be straight to the mechanic.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Bernie Duffy is the founder of Phperfect Pty Ltd and is passionate about the planet’s water. His catchphrase is “Perfect is an Alkaline Body!”
The world is riding the crest of a wave as Quantum Physics-Based discoveries relating to the real value of our water unfold at a mammoth pace. According to Messrs Dr. Batmanghelidj and Phillip Day in their book ‘Water & Salt’, the true purpose of water is described as “not just being a simple, inert substance. Water has two primary properties in the human body. The first is its life-sustaining properties, whilst its other, more important role is its life-giving functions.” The team from PHperfect are of the belief that when water vortex’s through their Phperfect ‘Edge’ device it is structured and energised. Indeed, the device actually changes the properties of water and returns it to its original life giving structure. A structure with the main purpose to protect against what is not good for all living creatures living on the earth and enhance their well-being. WHY IS THE REASON YOU DO WHAT YOU DO EVERY DAY Most people are unaware of the expression ‘what’s your why?’, but when they do discover their why they usually realise that their why is the reason they do what they do every day. In the past, most people are familiar with the term motivation. However, asking yourself ‘what’s your why?’ can often lead to a deeper and more thought provoking answer compared to the word motivation. As you start to think of what your why is, you realise that certain aspects of it have changed over the years during different periods of your life. Initially, you may have wanted to become what you are today because you had a mentor who you saw as a great person with a fantastic job or it was something you were passionate about. However, if you didn’t still have these things as values and beliefs to a certain extent, you probably wouldn’t love going to work and doing what you do each day. Sometimes when situations change and things are added or detracted
A few years ago in an interview, Steve Jobs explained,
“The people who are successful loved what they did, and so they would persevere when times got really tough. And the people who didn’t really love what they did quit, because they’re sane. Who would want to put up with this stuff if you didn’t really love it?” For many people, especially teenagers and school-leavers, they are pressured into choosing a career that they necessarily won’t like and living unhappily because they didn’t choose something they liked and were passionate about. The best way to combat this is by choosing what you love doing and the success will follow.
from your life, additional whys may appear. Some people may find that they find another reason to go to work each day and do what they do. Whether it’s to provide their children with more opportunities than they had growing up or to inspire people around them to do the best they can – it’s all another addition to their original why.

ROD RUSSELL SAVVY BUSINESS SALES
WHAT DOES A BUSINESS BROKER DO? People who are purchasing a business are, in fact, buying an income stream. Many are replacing a lost or unhappy job situation. It is a serious acquisition and likely the most important decision most people will ever make. For the sellers, the sale of a business involves many highly emotional and stressful issues. They will have invested serious time and effort into their business and the decision to sell will be an emotional one. There may be reluctant family members also stirring things up throughout the process.
The sale of a business is the end of someone’s dream and the beginning of another’s, and many of these dreams will end with the ultimate decision to sell. In addition to the plethora of emotional issues, the process will involve many external advisors and professionals. Many of them are reluctant to give their seal of approval, no matter how good the deal is, as it’s much safer to say no.
business savvy. yes we are.
The buyer also has numerous obstacles to overcome. Can they secure the funding required to get into the business? Do they have the ability to successfully operate the business? And are they really prepared to make the leap of faith necessary to go from being a buyer to business owner? A business broker will be involved in each and every one of these delicate issues and many more that occur behind the scenes. The sale process is full of landmines which are able to destroy any deal in an instant. It is challenging being in the middle of this to say the least, and if the broker is not on the ball, the sale will almost certainly fall apart. There is an old industry adage that business brokerage gives you an MBA in people – I couldn’t agree more!

WEBSITES NEED A WHY TOO! Deciding to get a website built is one thing, but you need to know why you need one. I don’t just mean to get more business – that is kind of given! Now I’m talking about getting into the nitty gritty reasons WHY you need a website. WHAT is its purpose? Does it appeal to your target market and how are you achieving this? The approach of just whacking up a few pretty pages with some photos and wording is, most likely, going to achieve nothing. Here is my number one question to help identify your WEBSITE WHY. Is your WHY to sell, inform, educate and/or inspire? The answer can dramatically change how you approach your website. This influences the wording and combination of images to use, colour scheme and marketing strategy. It will help you identify if you need extra features like a shopping cart, Frequently Asked Questions page, slideshow/s, before and after gallery, testimonials and blog page etc.
Not only can knowing your Website WHY help you work out what you
need to include, it can also help you identify what you won’t need. This can save spending a lot of time and money on bells and whistles that aren’t required. A Website with a WHY will always be more effective. Aligning this WHY with your overall business strategy and your personal WHY for being in business can be extremely powerful.

WHY SELL YOUR HOME IN SPRING? Every person’s ‘why?’ is different. Whether you’re upgrading, downsizing, changing jobs, changing schools, changing relationships or just wanting to change neighbourhoods, spring is a common theme when it comes to the question of when to sell. Traditionally the most sought after season to be on the market, spring arrives just in time to awaken the senses dulled after the ‘long’ Sunshine Coast winter lay-off. Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming, our weather is stunning and buyers are on the hunt for new property on the market.
The reality is that buyers are not nearly as seasonal as sellers think they are. All through winter they notice a distinct lack of listings, and when the property market starts to ramp up again through the first days of spring, eager buyers are ready and waiting to compete for new listings. However there are, of course, more choices for the buyers to pick from as the stock levels increase in line with the temperature. This being the case, the old adage of the early bird getting the

worm rings true, with the first of the spring sellers often reaping the largest benefits from low supply and high demand. So if you’ve made the decision, don’t procrastinate or try to get too clever thinking about the best time. The best time for you and your family will always be when you are actually ready. The Sunshine Coast is a busy, vibrant place with an ever increasing population looking to take advantage of our lifestyle. There is never a bad time!

business with Mark Jamieson
As our new hospital slowly rises out of the ground and as we move towards occupying and preparing Horton Park Golf Course for transformation into the new city centre, it’s important to keep abreast of what’s happening elsewhere in the world. It’s also useful to learn from others’ experiences; in particular what has worked and what hasn’t. So when the opportunity arose to join a delegation led by University of the Sunshine Coast to the United States to visit cities featuring state-of-theart light rail, new training hospitals and cutting-edge technology, I jumped at it.
mayoralbusiness With a green-field site about to be turned into one of Australia’s most exciting central business districts, it’s fitting that the technological underpinnings and transport systems should be as advanced and adaptable as possible for a generation of 21stcentury businesses demanding the most advanced communications support. The first stop was Portland, Oregon, whose metropolitan dynamics are close to our own. That city is working to redevelop key parts of itself, in particular to enhance relations with key industries, just as we are. Their key industries are medical/educational and agriculture – which also represent two of our seven high-value industries we are working to further develop here. I got a close-up look at and journey on the city’s TriMet advanced light rail system, which, while it’s still some 20 years away here, was very informative. The next stop was Silicon Valley, near San Jose, where our delegation met up with executives from Microsoft and Cisco. We discussed issues of technological development around small cities and how we can best develop that in Maroochydore. Then in San Francisco we visited the $US1.5 billion Mission Bay university hospital development, which will feature

so many similar aspects to our own new hospital when it opens in February 2015. It was a little like seeing where we will be here on the Coast in 10 years time. The delegation also toured University of California’s QB3, an impressive quantitative biosciences incubation centre which held many similarities to our own Innovation Centre. And just to prove how small a world it is, we discovered Mission Bay Hospital’s Vice-Chancellor and CEO came from Redcliffe. And the Australian Consul-General Nigel Warren’s parents live at Twin Waters, so I know people on the international stage here are well-informed about the Sunshine Coast. USC Pro-Vice Chancellor Engagement Mike Hefferan organised the trip in conjunction with Stockland and Savills. Unlike China, this was a knowledge mission rather than an investment mission; however, some technology investors in the USA are working with Austrade and already have a strong interest in the Sunshine Coast.
Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson keeps BM readers up to date on what’s happening on the Coast.

START WITH WHY
World renowned author of ‘Start with Why’ and ‘Leaders Eat Last’, Simon Sinek, has created an activity to help find your ‘Why’. World renowned author of ‘Start with Why’ and ‘Leaders Eat Last’, Simon Sinek, has created an activity to help find your ‘Why’. Your ‘Why’ is a statement of who you are. And you are who you are no matter what you do or where you go. Your Why is applicable in every aspect of your life, not just your work. This exercise can help you begin to put words to your Why. Why are your friends your friends? Finding your Why can be a challenge. However, your friends can be a great resource in your quest to discover it. All you need to do is talk to them. Not only is this a fun exercise, it will also provide some invaluable insight into some of your closest relationships.
STEP 1: Make a list of your three to five closest friends. These are the people you trust and love unconditionally; the people you could call at 3 AM with a dilemma, the people you would travel around the world to help. Even if you don’t talk to them a lot, they are the friends that will always be there for you just as you will always be there for them. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
STEP 2: Ask those people, “Why are you friends with me?” At first they may not understand the question. With a very perplexed look on their face, they might say, “What do you mean? We’ve been great friends forever. That’s a strange question.” Next, give them some context. Tell them it’s an exercise that you’re doing to learn more about yourself and it would be very helpful if they could work with you to answer the question. Friends Exercise
A Step Toward Discovering Your Why In person is ideal, but if in the interest of time you need to make a phone call, go for it. Again, ask the question, “Why are you my friend?” This time they’ll give you answers like “you’re smart, loyal, kind, funny”. All of those things will be true. Tell them, “Good! You’ve successfully defined the word ‘friend’, but why are you friends with ME.” This may be a little uncomfortable for both of you because few people really sit down and talk about the deep tenets of their friendship. Remember that your feelings come from the limbic brain, which is not associated with language so it will be difficult for your friends to put their feelings about your deep interpersonal connection into words.
STEP 3: Listen They will keep saying things like, “I don’t know. This is a really hard question.” Just let them keep talking. Keep quiet, keep listening, and most of all, let them keep struggling to find the right words. It may feel that they are going in circles, but just keep LISTENING. Eventually they will make a shift and start talking about themselves. They will start saying things like “I feel . . .” “You make me feel . . .” “When I’m around you, I feel . . .” You will likely feel an emotional connection with this person when they describe themselves and the way they FEEL when they are with you. You may find yourself getting goose bumps on your arm or even a tear in your eye. This often happens when you experience something that feels right.
STEP 4: Clarify Since you’ve likely never had this conversation with your friend before, use your curiosity about the things they’ve shared to ask more questions to clarify what they mean. Here’s an example: “I feel good when you’re around. I feel like no matter what I do, you’ll accept me.” “What do you mean when you say “feel good”? “I don’t know. I guess I feel calm. I feel like no matter how stressed.” FRIEND YOU FRIEND Silence is key here. Try not to interrupt or ‘fill in the blanks’ in an effort to reduce the awkward feeling of this conversation. Let them sit with the question in silence for as long as they need to. “When I sit down with you, I just feel more relaxed.” “So no matter how stressed you are, when you and I get together, you forget your worries?” “Not exactly. I feel like my worries aren’t as big a deal as I thought they were when we start talking about them.” “So I help you put things in perspective.” “Exactly! Then I feel much more calm.” Once you have a clear understanding of what your friend means, take good clear notes.
SIMON SINEK
48 ISSUE 65
STEP 5: Compare As you compare your notes from the conversations you’ve had with different friends, you’ll start to notice that your friends are saying similar things about you. Take those key words or phrases and list them below.
For example: My best friends say I... 1. Put things in perspective 2. Help make things more clear 3. Help them see the big picture Once you’ve discovered what you have that your friends don’t get from anyone else, you’re one step closer to articulating your Why and what it is that you naturally do to make your mark in the world. Key words and phrases my friends use to describe me... YOU

WHY I DO WHAT I DO: From humble beginnings as a teacher supporting children with intellectual disabilities, Vivianne Dawalibi’s curious Australian destiny, interwoven with her Sudan-based Armenian husband, is a remarkable story. When asked what drives Vivianne, we find a big, beautiful heart that sums it up with, “I believe my mission on this holy planet is to serve people in need.” This clear, personal vision has long sustained Vivianne, who is of Syrian origin born and lived in Sudan. She served humanity for twenty years working with refugees in some extremely troubled parts of our world. “On 26 January 1980 I married and moved to Khartoum, Capital of Sudan. I joined the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). I found myself intensively engaged with various local and international emergency operations, starting from my home country Sudan to Kenya, Somalia, Armenia, Belarus, Bangladesh and finally in Bosnia/Herzegovina during the Kosovo conflict, providing solutions to the vast refugee-related needs.” In 1981, due to such dedication, Vivianne was awarded with the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize Certificate and in 1995 the UNESCO Peace Prize Certificate. From her amazing life experiences and by a twist of fate, she has learned great awareness and compassion for the suffering and circumstances of others. “Amazingly, I became a refugee myself in Australia …and I found it very challenging as a new settler…to secure a job. “I established the Melkite Welfare Association under the umbrella of the Melkite Catholic Church in Greenacre NSW, received different grants and developed various community projects serving the needs of those settlers. “After I lost my beloved husband who struggled for three years with a heart condition, I moved to Queensland. In 2004 I mortgaged my home and purchased my first bulk billing practice, Caloundra Bulk Billing Surgery, and in 2010 I purchased Cooroy Family Practice.”
Why people choose us? We provide all family health care, skin cancer checks and minor biopsy procedures, and prevention and treatment of chronic disease management. My purpose is to develop sustainable, easy-to-access medical practices providing high quality, affordable health care to all Sunshine Coast residents and visitors. Many different health services are provided by dedicated and passionate clinical and non-clinical teams. The Cooroy Family Practice has moved to 7 Myall Street (ph 54720064) and there are four experienced, caring and friendly male and female doctors: Dr. Yaser Hegazi, Dr. Nadee Wickramasuriya, Dr. Fatma Elnaggar and Dr. Robert McCrossin (paediatrician). We look forward to building together a happy and healthy community. Your support is sincerely appreciated.
• We bulk bill 100% - no gap fees to all Medicare Card holders and we strive to refer our patients to specialists who will do the same.

Mooloolaba Jet Boats Ph: 0402 625 825 E: info@mooloolabajetboat.com W: www.mooloolabajetboat.com F: www.facebook.com/Mooloolabajetboat
WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO: Thrill seekers have a new option for their next venture right here in the heart of the Sunshine Coast at The Wharf Marina, Mooloolaba. Jerry and Paddy van Driel-Vis have just launched the next level of Jet Boating with the Mooloolaba Jet Boat thrilling and exhilarating passengers whilst conducting a wide repertoire of manoeuvres such as Duck-tails, figure 8’s, skidded turns and of course jet boat full spins, all on the face and top of massive waves! If thrills aren’t for you, that’s okay because the Mooloolaba Jet Boat offers more than just a thrill-seeking ride. You can experience a unique opportunity that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world which is travelling from one town centre to another for shopping, lunch, dinner or an event and is sure to make a cool arrival. Additional activities such as wedding venue arrivals, water taxi services (within the canals of Mooloolaba), dolphin sighting tours and even high speed whale watching trips are all on the agenda. Our corporate visitors are also well served with the thrill ride activity as the short time frame and easy location make it an ideal break from the conference or meetings they are up here for! Business Matters spoke to Jerry and Paddy van Driel-Vis about their why and they said, “We started this business because we believe the experience has a potential to further set the Sunshine Coast apart as a tourist destination. We want to really link the various key areas of the Sunshine Coast by water with this vessel. Our major centres Caloundra, Mooloolaba, Maroochydore and Noosa are all located on picturesque waterways and we should be taking more advantage of them and showcasing them to locals and tourists.”
Why people choose us? When asked what brought Jerry and Paddy to launch this Jet Boat here on the Sunshine Coast they said, “We realised that the Coast has a history associated with Ocean Jet Boating, we really felt this needed to be returned to Mooloolaba. True Ocean Jet Boating started here in Mooloolaba back in 2008 when the first of three Australian built and designed jet boats by Oceantech in South Australia was launched here in Mooloolaba. After a couple of years it was moved to Melbourne where it still operates under the name of ‘St Kilda Spinner’.” Of course to create this type of unique opportunity that attracts people to the Coast, the boat has to be innovative and stand out from the crowd. The major difference with the vessel that Mooloolaba Jet Boat provides is the fact that the passengers are in a safe, dry and comfortable enclosed glass cabin. Their vessel is designed around total passenger comfort and safety, high end racing seating with four point safety harnesses, a DNA 200W Marine sound system, fully carpeted and there is absolutely no concern about clothing or personal belongs getting wet. The Mooloolaba Jet Boat is one of only three true offshore jet boats in Australia and offers a more extreme experience than open boats the cruise the still water. These boats have been purpose built and specifically designed to handle offshore waters and action at speeds up to 40 knots. The sun roof and all doors are all glass for complete visibility of the surroundings to add an extra enjoyable and scenic element of the experience. When we asked why the Mooloolaba Jet Boat stands out from other jet boats, Paddy and Jerry said, “The difference the enclosed vessel makes is that traditionally on an open deck vessel, passengers are continuously exposed to weather conditions and tend to not operate these vessels with more than a drizzle of rain. As well as this, the ocean conditions play a large role in whether or not they can operate as they can easily be swamped by a large wave but unlike these restrictions, an enclosed vessel does not have these limitations and has a much larger window of operation. Another positive of the enclosed vessel is that there is no need to wear a life jack (aka heavy, hot raincoats) meaning passengers can have a much more comfortable experience enjoying the air-conditioned glass cabin.”

Paddy and Jerry say, “We want to make sure it’s the best Ocean jet boat operation available anywhere and is seen as the benchmark and true origin of the activity. Much as the Shotover Jet boats in NZ are seen as the benchmark and origin of inland jet boating. The goal of the high speed, fun, thrilling but safe experience to locals and tourists that isn’t available anywhere else.” BUSINESS MATTERS 53

moments with Dranko Magic
Hello again, I’ve have been out of action for the last two issues, but I can now say magic moments is back. What is your Why? What’s so great about your job, business, sport, relationship, family or even the good old K9 that greets you everyday once you get home? I worked for a paint manufacturing company for 17 years, being a young guy making great money was perfect for me. I was eventually put in charge of manufacturing and at one stage I had over 40 employees to look after. As the years went on I started not really enjoying the job as much as I
originally did. The hours were pretty good and the money was great, but there was something missing. When I stopped to ask myself what it was that I was passionate about, back in school, it got me thinking. I’d always loved photography and so I said to myself, this is it, this is my why. From that day onwards I knew I had to become a photographer. For the next two years I studied at night and on weekends finishing my course at the top of my class. I started doing weddings on weekends and then came the day I said good bye to my old job and went out on my own. I had to sell myself and my work every single day. The thing here was this was my WHY so everything I was doing didn’t feel like work to me because I loved it so much. I moved away from photography for a bit when my father passed away, I found it difficult to cope with things, I knew I needed to find my WHY. Dogs, that’s right dog’s, I started a mobile dog wash and grooming service. It became very successful,

I believe because I loved what I did so much people could see this and my love of animals, I even used to take photographs of their dogs. These days my Why is Business Matters Magazine. To run a business with the one I love more than anything in this world (besides Beer) is my why. Meeting so many different people hearing their stories and making difference here on the Sunshine Coast - this my Why. So think about what is your why, find that special thing in your working life that makes it your Why. We spend so much of our time working so why not do something that makes you feel great. If you can find this you will never work another day in your life. Until next time, don’t sweat the small stuff. Don’t worry, be happy.
Dranko Magic is the other half of Business Matters Magazine. He is our Operations Manager; this role includes professional photography, looking after all the invoicing, accounts, debt collection and also the delivery of the magazine.

Bartercard: helping businesses grow on the Sunshine Coast for over 22 years Thanks Bartercard for the last four years. I have bought so many fantastic things on Bartercard including tickets to motivational speakers, holidays, computers, even a pedigree kitten. I pay rent on Bartercard and just recently purchased a property paying the deposit on Bartercard.
The more we investigate the opportunities in Bartercard the more doors open, especially within the hospitality sector. Taking the time to better understand the Bartercard system has shown us how to access revenue previously lost in room nights that would otherwise have expired valueless.
I can honestly say it has been great for my business. Thanks again for your service and always smiling demeanour.
Bartercard for us simply means more business.

That’s why you are here and what will ultimately give you the most success and happiness in your life – your true why.
Remember, at the end of the day it’s not about killing yourself to acquire symbols with money you do not have, to impress people you really do not like anyway. Money does not guarantee happiness. So take control of your life and make sure you give your best to those most important.

WHY WE’RE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT HELPING SMALL BUSINESS SUCCEED The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) is very proud of our local small businesses who deliver a diverse range of goods and services across the Sunshine Coast and beyond. They are the engine room of the Queensland economy. Small businesses provide enormous opportunity in creating healthy, vibrant and sustainable local communities that form a vital component of the national economy, too. They have a culture of enterprise where creativity, initiative and learning through action are everyday life. Their products and services are world class, delivering very high satisfaction for the customer. This state has a small business population of more than 400,000 businesses employing more than one million Queenslanders. Many small businesses are family-owned and run and often operate

with a small number of staff. There is an enormous amount of expertise and specialist knowledge that thrives in this sector, the value of which is often underestimated. Their work – every day of the week, every week of the year – makes us at CCIQ want to do every bit we can to help them succeed. CCIQ has been helping businesses for over 150 years. CCIQ’s why is to see the SMEs (which make up 96 per cent of the state economy) grow so that the Queensland economy grows. CCIQ wants the Sunshine Coast and Queensland to be the best place for companies to operate their business. As for me personally, I’m passionate about helping businesses on the Sunshine Coast. I’ve worked for large corporations, small companies and run my own business, so I understand the needs of businesses and the demands on their time dealing with staff issues and also trying to be knowledgeable about all aspects of business. If I can help companies on the coast grow, then I’m doing my job. I also have a background in international business and an MBA in International Business, and am keen to see more Sunshine Coast companies get involved in exporting their goods and services overseas. There are so many great companies on the coast with some unique products and services that other countries would benefit from. What’s my why? Getting stuck in and helping those businesses succeed. That’s why!

Why Storm Long is leaving DI HENSHALL INTERIOR DESIGN Sunshine Coast
...and joining Di Henshall Interior Design Brisbane. Di Henshall Interior Design is thrilled to announce that Storm Long, a key member of our design team, has relocated to Brisbane to be closer to our metropolitan Brisbane and Gold Coast clients.
The company is presently working on residential projects in Highgate Hill, Bardon and Hamilton, and recently completely furnished apartments in New Farm and St Lucia. “We also work throughout Australia – in Victoria, New South Wales, and Adelaide and have worked as far afield as Fiji, Western Australia, the UK and New Zealand.”
This move follows Di Henshall Interior Design’s launch of our office in Teneriffe just over two years ago. Storm has been a part of the Di Henshall design team in Noosa for over two and a half years, and has gained invaluable experience in both residential and commercial design, working on over seventy design projects.
“We are all very excited about reinforcing our presence in Brisbane and feel that this is definitely the right move for us,” said Di.
Di Henshall Interior Design has an enviable reputation for top-class interior design in private homes, hotels, offices, and apartments and has won numerous awards from the Master Builders Association and the HIA for their innovative kitchen and bathroom designs. “We are used to working with clients from all over the world and we are also used to tight time frames – something we’re very good at!” As a registered builder, Di believes time management and scheduling is vital when carrying out tradework to minimize any disruption to clients, for both residential and commercial projects.
We will still keep our head office in Noosa although there is a growing demand for us to have a permanent designer in Brisbane. I will continue to visit Brisbane at least once a week.”
