This cover is just the bee’s knees as far as I’m concerned; it covers Wealth (the theme of this issue), Spring (with the beautiful spring lavenders), Spring Racing (with the gorgeous hair fascinator) and it also covers Pink October (for breast cancer). So yeah, you can maybe understand why I shed a tear or two (or three). I literally pour every part of my being into this magazine. If you ask me what Wealth means to me, to be honest it’s the feeling I get when I look at a cover like this; I simply well up with pride in a way that I can’t explain. It’s also when I read the magazine cover to cover and just love each and every article. I couldn’t be prouder of this magazine and how it has grown over the last 12 years. We have a policy that each and every page must inspire the reader and I sincerely feel we are just getting better and better at ensuring that happens. We celebrate 12 years this issue, can you believe that? Honestly, in my personal opinion, wealth is an abundance of everything you want and need; wealth is when you love what you to do to the moon and beyond. Yes, wealth is money too, but I believe that it’s certainly not a stand-alone thing; there are millions of people in the world that have millions of dollars but, in my opinion, that’s just not wealth. I believe that real wealth is when whatever it is you have makes you happy; when you have an abundance of EVERYTHING that YOU BELIEVE YOU NEED. I have more wealth today than I ever imaged possible.

Personally, I think that:

LOVE = WEALTH HAPPINESS = WEALTH JOY = WEALTH ABUNDANCE = WEALTH FREEDOM = WEALTH FULFILMENT = WEALTH PEACE = WEALTH

FLY LIKE A KING OR QUEEN,

Right here on the Sunshine Coast

BY SHARI HALL

Most likely, at some point in everyone’s childhood, one has dreamed of being a king or a queen, a prince or a princess. But it’s a rare occasion that those dreams come true, or that such an opportunity to turn a fairy tale into a reality could exist here in South-East Queensland; after all, we aren’t all Mary Donaldson. For Sunshine Coaster, Steve Padgett, Founder of Universal Training Systems and Flight Options Chairman - and a major shareholder of Alliance Aviation Services, now the world’s largest Fokker operator - the recent acquisition of the Fokker 70 aeroplane from the Dutch royal family has indeed created the possibility for any one of us to feel like a king or queen! Purchased new in 1995 by the royals, and for two decades often piloted by King Willem-Alexander himself on trips transporting the Queen Mother and family around the Netherlands and Europe, the Rolls-Royce Tay-powered twinjet plane seats 25 passengers in luxury. The interior was custom-styled for the royal family and features the colour orange, a trademark of the Dutch dating back to the 1500s. This was adopted from the coat of arms of Willem van Oranje, the Prince of 6 ISSUE 89

Nassau. With two-metres of standing height, extra-wide STEVE PADGETT seats, a separate office, private and business class areas, this unique plane became available to the discerning for charter through Flight Options in May 2018. When the royal family decommissioned the plane from service, in lieu of a new, larger Boeing 737 jet which would enable longer flights, Steve could not pass up the opportunity to own such a unique aircraft and have it available for charter from the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. A commercial pilot and flying instructor since the age of 19, originally commissioned with the Royal Australian Air Force, Steve is considered a leader in the aviation industry, and has been acknowledged by his peers as one of the region’s top 10 people of influence. His desire is to create

an opportunity for individuals, companies or groups to receive the royal treatment and have a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It’s not every day that a monarchy decides to sell its private plane. However, in the hands of Steve Padgett and his partners, the Dutch king and queen knew their plane would be cared for, respected and preserved in the manner it deserved. When they made their royal visit to Australia in 2016, Alliance and Steve were there to support them and their aeroplane throughout their journey. The hire price tag may be an unattainable luxury to some; however, if you aspire to personally charter a jet to whisk you and

If you’d like to learn to fly and sit in the pilot’s seat one day, like Steve’s son who is now a Captain with Qantas, you might consider a visit to the Universal Training Systems world-class training complex at Flight Options, at the Sunshine Coast Airport in Maroochydore. UTS has an existing Cessna Citation Mustang Simulator that is available to train pilots, engineers and other aviation-related sectors in Australia and overseas. Courses include recreational, private

24 of your closest friends away for a weekend on Hamilton Island to celebrate a special birthday, or to take corporate clients on that trip of a lifetime, it’s perfect. Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari often use a small plane as the ideal mode of transport to fly their VIP customers to a location with open roadways in the country to put their pedal to the metal; this plane would allow a group of up to 25 to be all together in the one place. Whether your need is for an annual business retreat, or simply a themed excursion for Grandma’s 90th, if your budget will allow, this will surely be a one-off experience that you and your passengers will never forget.

Is your business

HEALTHY?

Why not increase the wealth of your business through health? The health and well-being of our greatest business asset - our human resources or our TEAM - is now a measurable and quantifiable influence on the wealth, productivity and longevity of businesses globally. Well-being is gaining recognition as an important measure that relates to both the quality of life of individuals as well as financial measures that are important to businesses. Companies that implemented a wellness program experienced the following results:

and commercial pilot licenses, visual flight rules and command instrument rating, high altitude training and traffic collision avoidance system training, just to name a few. The Level D full-motion simulators offer advanced pilot training in a tailored and professional environment, utilising the latest and best simulator technology. While this may all seem like ‘the lifestyles of the rich and famous’, and there is no question that hiring a private jet is indeed an exclusive affair, wealth in life is attainable for all and, according to Steve, it’s not simply measured by how much money one has.

Steve says, “Wealth to me is not money; wealth is all the really good things in life, like family, good health, good friends, a great life - that’s what wealth means to me. We can all generate money in some form or other, but that’s not what I consider wealth. We are all so fortunate to be able to do what we do. And we are so lucky to be living in this country.” It’s fitting that Steve’s story in aviation began with the Royal Australian Air Force, and today has culminated in the presentation to Australia of the plane that exclusively served the Dutch royal family for two decades. After nearly 60 years of flying, enjoying something that he says gives him a boost and an enthusiasm for life, he hopes that with the Fokker 70 he can share that joy by allowing anyone with the desire (and a healthy wallet) to feel as though they are a king or queen, if only for a day. e

They also form part of most strategic and forward planning by businesses of all sizes and government enterprises to increase the bottom line. FIRE UP COACHING

THINKING ABOUT YOUR THINKING Whether it be finances, career, relationships or health, change requires us to be self-aware and think about our thinking.

Dr Jeffrey Schwartz is a neurophysiologist who has done extensive research into how the mind influences the brain. His research is about having awareness about awareness, known as metacognition. For most of us, we don’t stop to think about our thinking, but it is this very action that will enhance our ability to engage in the act of willful reframing. This is what supports us to change. The act of willful reframing completely changes the way the brain responds to external stimuli, such as negative upsetting images. We need to consciously divert our attention from negative to positive to be more resourceful. We need to refocus deliberately, which is the act of willfully reframing and takes us from reacting emotionally to responding thoughtfully. The mental act of focusing intention tends to hold in place brain circuits associated with whatever we are focused on. What we pay attention to we get more of. Focusing attention on your

mental experience maintains the brain state arising in association with that experience. Whatever holds a person’s attention will influence what is happening in the brain.

Another researcher in this field, Benjamin Libet, did an experiment that looked at free will vs free won’t. His research is famous and looks at the relationship between brain activity and voluntary movement. It showed that it takes half a second between a brain signal and a voluntary response. After .3 of a second, there is the desire to move but it is the mind that decides in the final .2 of a second whether or not it will. This moment in time is what he refers to as VETO POWER. The desire does not determine that you must move - the mind decides whether to listen; you must activate the frontal cortex. We have no control in the short-term over the messages the brain sends out. We only have veto power over what we act on. DECIDE WHEN YOU NEED TO EXERCISE MORE VETO POWER You only get one brain so it’s best to give it every opportunity you can to build strong positive neural pathways to override the limiting patterns of the past that no longer serve any positive purpose. ca FIRE UP Coaching P: 1300 347 387 M: 0409 686 772 Kathy.McKenzie@fireup.com.au www.fireup.com.au

Every day the IT landscape changes for both small and large businesses but are you keeping up with the technology that can make your company more profitable and efficient? The technology within the company needs to achieve one or both objectives: either to provide operational efficiency within an organisation that will allow the facilitation of growth or to provide a platform that will engage customers and drive revenue. I see a shift to more automation in small businesses; where once human resources were required to fulfil that need, now there are online software applications such as Zero that can act as your accountant rather than a human resource. The big shift will be downsizing on staff in small business and implementing operational efficient systems that no longer require a human resource and can increase the business’s profit by outsourcing on software applications or hardware devices.

will no longer own their IT hardware; it’s moving to a monthly hardware subscription cost just like software subscriptions. All this considered, have you had a really good look at your current IT system or had it reviewed by an IT professional? As best practice your company should have a 12-month strategic technology plan in place every year and have it evaluated every six months to a year just like a marketing plan, to make sure you are keeping with the times and not getting stuck behind with old technology. m www.secureaccess.com.au

But while the surgery was mostly successful in boosting Eric’s quality of life, he struggled in school, and when his family migrated from South Africa to the Spanish island of Mallorca when he was 16, the lack of English-speaking schools saw Eric call time on his studies.

In the five years he lived in Spain, Eric’s passion for art had grown stronger and it was becoming more than just a hobby. ACCOUNTING MATTERS

WHY ARE YOU IN BUSINESS?

IS IT TO BECOME WEALTHY BY SHAREE WEBSTER, CA DIRECTOR, HOLMANS ACCOUNTING & TAXATION

Winter is over, and Spring is upon us. At the start of the financial year you would have set your business goals for the new financial year; are you on track? Becoming wealthy from your business is easy; the winning formula is Income - Expenses = Profit. But if it’s so easy why do many businesses get it wrong? According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than 60 per cent of small businesses cease operating within the first three years of starting. The three main reasons businesses fail are cash flow issues, growing too quickly and lack of knowledge. So, what do you need to do to avoid this happening and create a sustainable business and a wealthier you, be that money, time or freedom?

Clear-cut goals and purpose are the key to your business success; not just monetary goals but also cultural goals, relationship goals and non-business goals. We need to know what we are working towards and why. You need to invest in your business and your team. Investing in your business assets is not mandatory. As the business owner, you get to decide how to spend your money. Business owners may believe the only way to improve their business profits and cash flow is to make drastic and major changes to their business. However, often the most effective way to improve your business is to work on making small improvements to several things. It’s what some people call the ‘Power of One’. What if we increase turnover by one per cent, increase prices by one per cent, improve our gross profit by one per cent and reduce costs by one per cent? What if we then increase the productivity of our workers by one per cent, increase our average customer sale by $1 and reduce our

12 ISSUE 89

debtor days by one day whilst increasing our stock turnover by one day and receiving a discount from our suppliers of one per cent? The impact of doing all these things as part of an overall review of a business can have a profound effect on profitability and cash flow. Also, remember that every dollar increase in net profit may lead to a three-dollar increase in the sale value of your business. Jim Blasingame, an American commentator on small business - still relevant for Australian businesses - said, “Being successful in small business isn’t complicated, but the degree of difficulty is hard to explain.” So, if you get the formula correct for your business, you should be on your way to becoming wealthier. m DISCLAIMER: This article contains general information only. THE RICHEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD NOOSA4SALE WITH ALEX HARRIS

According to the fifth annual study by investment bank Credit Suisse, the median Australian adult was worth more than $US225,000 ($258,000), well ahead of the second wealthiest population on this measure, the Belgians, at $US173,000.

BE WEALTHY

NOW!

To achieve what we want in life - in this case, financial freedom or being wealthy - we must obviously take the actions that produce the results. That makes sense, right? We all know that so why aren’t we doing it? That’s probably a question you’ve asked yourself before. The answer is that you first must BE the person in order to do those things. You’re probably more confused right now, wondering if you must be wealthy to become wealthy. In a way the answer is yes, you do. But that doesn’t mean spending money you don’t have. What we do as wealthy people is create wealth; we study it, we learn what we must learn, and we take steps towards that every day until finally, we produce the results.

So, this process starts with you adopting the identity: I AM WEALTHY. Say it every day; say it throughout the day. Ask yourself what three things you can do today to produce more wealth in your life. Then take the action. Imagine if, every day you’re doing three things to create wealth, what your life will be like one year from now! ca www.kurekashley.com

Only six per cent of Australians have wealth below $US10,000, compared with 29 per cent in the United States and 70 per cent for the world as a whole. Household wealth in Australia is mostly comprised of equity in property, which averages $US319,700 per household, or 60 per cent of gross assets. This is the second highest in the world after Norway. But this reliance on property also makes for a greater spread of wealth. Among developed economies Hong Kong, Switzerland and the United States are deemed to have ‘very high inequality’, where the top ten per cent control more than 70 per cent of the wealth.

Economist Saul Eslake notes that “Rising house prices tend to reduce inequality, as they make up a greater part of middle-class wealth.” A rising tide lifts all boats. The Sunshine Coast is enjoying an extended period of significant capital growth, which is anticipated to continue for some time to come off the back of the airport expansion, upgrades to the Bruce Highway and other infrastructure. This is a great time to sell if you have owned for some years, and it remains a great time to buy with more growth to come. ca Noosa 4 Sale M: 0412 635 274 E: alex@noosa4sale.com.au www.Noosa4sale.com.au

KNOWLEDGE IS WEALTH WHAT IS REAL WEALTH? What is ‘wealth’? We all have a different belief or concept of what wealth is; for example, ‘wealth’ could be viewed as good health or having money or even having knowledge. How would your business define it? In the business world, a combination of different ‘wealth’ factors needs to be addressed for an organization to achieve its ‘wealth’. One major factor is having your bookkeeping in a healthy state, by keeping it up to date in real time. When your systems are up-to-date, they turn your raw data into information and by doing so, provide you with ‘knowledge’ about your business and its performance. Is it meeting your expectations? How is it performing against others in your industry? This also provides other information vital to running your business, such as cash flow. If you know where your business is at, finance-wise, this will assist you and your decision-makers to make financial decisions based on facts. When you are looking for finance from a lender, they will ask you for your financials. Being able to provide up-todate and accurate information on the spot demonstrates you are in control of finances within your business.

Wealth means different things to different people but, when it comes to business, the brands that always put the customer first tend to be at the top of the list. Harlequin Blinds was established on the Coast in the early 1990s; current owners Marilyn and Julian Black bought the company in the early 2000s, but they were not new to the business. Harlequin Blinds and Security was probably the biggest company making blinds and security products at that time on the Sunshine Coast. Julian was contracted to Harlequin as their lead installer for several years, so they were in the right position to take over when it came on the market. Putting customers first, experience, expertise, supporting local charities and the local community are very important to both Marilyn and Julian. They believe that wealth means achieving a worklife balance, wealth means family and wealth means an abundance of the things you want and need.

UNLOCKING THE CODE FOR HIGH PERFORMING BUSINESSES

THE FIVE LEVERS TO GROW YOUR NET PROFIT

PLANNING FOR FUN

Often when speaking to business owners it’s clear their solution for increasing profit is new leads. However, in all the businesses I’ve worked in or coached, it’s never just about new leads. There are so many other ways to increase net profit.

The definition of wealth is individual and comes in many forms, including happiness, lifestyle, fun and family; but what about the financial wealth needed to fund these goals?

Every business wants to be a high performer, where the people in the business are on the same page as the business owners and everyone is working with the same goal in mind. That goal might be profit, it might be service, it might be innovation, it might even be long-term sustainability and growth, and often it is all of these! Irrespective of the businesses goal, HR Coach Australasia (HRC) decided to find out what really separates the high performers from the low performers and they have just released their white paper on the results. The results were revealing; by identifying consistent gaps between high and low performing businesses across a range of measures, the whole spectrum of what drives businesses in Australasia was examined in detail. If you are an Australasian business looking to stay or become a high performer, this is essential reading. Alternatively, if you are just in the business of surviving, read the research and complete the self-assessment as sometimes the solutions might be easier than you realise! To request a copy of the whitepaper email info@suncoasthr.com.au or go to www.suncoasthr.com.au/hr-news. Suncoast HR Services Kate Brown & Mandy Ward Email info@suncoasthr.com.au Web www.suncoasthr.com.au

I refer to these as the five levers to grow profit: 1. Increase the number of customers 2. Increase the average transaction $ value 3. Increase the number of transactions per customer 4. Increase customer retention 5. Decrease your expenses You’ll notice only one of these has anything to do with new leads: increasing the number of customers. And new leads are not the only way to do this. Often, the biggest impact is achieved by improving lead conversion, not more leads. The biggest opportunity for most businesses is the database of customers and leads they already have. So how do you grow profits? Turn the focus to ‘within your business’ rather than looking externally for the solution.

Craig Levitt - Marketing & Success Coach Life & Wealth Academy Mob 0414 681 189 Email craig@lifewealthacademy.com.au

You can align your financial wealth goals with your lifestyle goals by asking yourself these questions: • What adventures are on my goal list this year? What are the costs and the timeframe? • I would feel less financial pressure if I had $? in savings in my bank account by Christmas 2018, so I can enjoy summer; what is the weekly amount I need to put aside to achieve this? • I would like to reduce my working week by X hours; how can I replace this income? From little things big things grow; a small weekly savings amount can grow into a nest egg big enough to fund your lifestyle and fun goals for the upcoming year. Whilst our individual goals are personal, the accepted currency to pay our way is universal. Planning your financial wealth in advance is a shortcut to achieving your goals sooner.

TEAM BUILDING SHAPED TO SUIT YOUR TEAM

TRUE WEALTH IS YOUR HEALTH

WEALTH THROUGH PROPERTY

“I love team building, we get away from the office to play games,” a client once said. I was disappointed that my programs seemed to be an excuse to escape the drudgery of an office. Was that all that team building meant to him? I spoke to the manager and asked her whether the program was effective. “Not really,” she replied, “It’s just an excuse to leave the office.” I was stunned! What a waste of money. On the flip side, a high-level AFL team also wanted a team building program designed. On meeting the coach, he bluntly explained what he wanted, “Push ‘em hard and don’t hold back.” Okay, I thought, here is a highprofile coach who knows what he wants so I designed a very demanding program. He told his players, “Don’t ask any questions, just do what you’re told!” This was very different to the usual corporate clients and clear in the expectations. What is the point of my story? I guess that team building and relationship building comes in different disguises. It doesn’t need to cost much, an hour or two can be plenty. Talk to me about your needs and I’ll design something unique for your organisation.

Your wealth is not what you earn or what you have; true wealth is your health.

Real estate provides many options for financial growth dependent on the level of risk and reward you are comfortable with and in either the residential or commercial property sector. There are ways to make quick money generally though ‘capital improvement’ which can be fast paced, wears a higher risk and you typically need money upfront. Alternatively, you can aim for longer term gains through relying on naturally occurring ‘capital growth’ in prime areas or otherwise you can gear your purchases towards ‘cash flow’ by purchasing purely for income generation. In my younger years, I was definitely motivated by a quick renovation, re-zone or the development style projects where I could buy and sell within 6-12 months. Now I’m a little older, I’m setting myself up for holding onto property and longer-term cash flow combined with where I foresee steady capital gain for the legacy I leave my kids. Just don’t have all your eggs in one real estate basket, that would have to be the best advice I was ever given!

Today many people have forgotten to value their health. Each time I teach medical intuition to corporations, businesses and universities, I hear people saying that they don’t have time to eat properly or exercise. So, I ask, “Do you have time after you die?” When I was nursing dying patients they all wished they’d looked after their health. Today is a new day, a new moment in time to create true wealth in your life. So, swap ‘W’ for ‘H’ and make HEALTH your WEALTH! As you do this you will watch all aspects of your life become abundant and you will feel rich on every level. Allow your body to talk to you; medical intuition will make this happen. Do one thing today to make HEALTH your WEALTH. Millennium Education Ph 07 5641 4009 Mob 0414 758 360 Web MillenniumEducation.com

THE HIDDEN COST OF NOT STYLING TO SELL

HOW TO FUND THAT GRANNY FLAT

Spring is commonly the best time to put your home on the market for sale and that is no truer than here on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. The timing is perfect for a sales campaign, for the contract to go unconditional, the usual settlement period and a new home for Christmas. With the timeframe tight, there is no room for error. Every vendor’s goal is to sell for the highest possible price in the shortest possible time with the least amount of money spent, yet many still consider styling their property for sale a luxury or an unnecessary expense. It can actually be more costly not to style and there are three main reasons for this. The majority of people are not spatially aware - Most people are unable to see how best to furnish a space. Styling shows the amount of furniture needed and the optimal placement to create the desired ambience and flow within the room. Styling helps create an emotional connection with the buyer - By highlighting the features of the home, the potential buyer can see themselves living in the home and hence an emotional connection develops.

Whether it be to provide housing for your family, or as an investment to earn rental income, granny flats are growing in popularity. There are two common ways to arrange the money you need: accessing the equity or taking out a construction loan.

Vacant properties are harder to sell - In a vacant property, there is nothing for your eyes to settle on except every imperfection on the floor, without any furnishing, they can have quite an echo and they tend to feel quite sterile. Simple and Savvy Ph 0414 741 227 Web simpleandsavvy.com.au

upskill now

Using equity: It’s relatively easy to arrange a home loan to build a granny flat if you have enough equity in your existing property and sufficient income to support the new loan. Using a construction loan: If you don’t have enough equity in your property, this could be an option. Construction loans are usually approved based on the value of the existing property plus the value of the granny flat build. Just remember to check with your local council to make sure you are following its guidelines, including the rules around using a granny flat as an investment. As costs can range from $50,000 to more than $250,000, your first step should be to see your local mortgage broker to go through your finance options. The next ten pages of the magazine are our ‘Then and Now’ feature. We only offered this feature to advertisers who were with us back then, in the very first 12 months of the magazine; some of them have changed names, some have started their own new businesses, but all of them are still thriving and holding their head high on the Sunshine Coast. A special mention and special thanks to Chill (see page 21), who were the ones that started Matters Magazine back in 2006. If it wasn’t for them, we certainly wouldn’t be here now. Congratulations to each of you, you’ve come a long way. We, too, have come a long way over that period. To begin with, the magazine was called ‘Business Matters’; so much has changed over the 12 years. We changed from ‘Business Matters’ to ‘Matters Magazine’ in order to incorporate more of what matters most on the Sunshine Coast, in both business and life. We also changed to quarterly at the beginning of 2016. This was probably

NOW just a fact. When Facebook themselves put out a print magazine (see page 84), you can be assured that print is not going anywhere anytime soon. THANKS ONCE AGAIN TO ALL OUR LOYAL ADVERTISERS, SUPPORTERS AND READERS OVER THE LAST 12 YEARS; WE HAVE A PLAN TO BE HERE FOR A WHILE YET.

Wow, 12 years certainly goes quickly when you are HAVING FUN! Pippa Colman & Associates Law Practice is a very different business to the one it was 12 years ago, with the most significant changes occurring over the last 12 months. Not only has the business had a slight name change, but it has also been restructured and is now an incorporated legal practice, with three directors leading the way. As a knock-on effect, the business has recently moved premises to accommodate increasing staff numbers, having grown from ten to over 22 employees. As you’d expect, growth necessitates a change in management techniques. These

days the entire team is involved in the weekly team meeting, where business performance, goals for the coming week and happiness levels are discussed. The management team also meets regularly and sets new goals every quarter. One thing that hasn’t changed is the firm’s focus on finding solutions for clients that don’t involve going to Court. The community spirit is just as strong now as it was back then. Pippa Colman & Associates Law Practice continues to provide free monthly information seminars to the public to help educate people on family law and dealing with relationship breakdowns. The business is also heavily involved in the Sunshine Coast Law Association, with Pippa now in her second term as President.

Then and Now: Chilli, 12 YEARS ON! 12 years ago, we were about to publish the first edition of this very magazine. an industry that is changing at breakneck speed. We’ve worked hard to stay ahead of the curve. At the time we started ‘Business Matters’, Facebook had just begun, YouTube was a year old and Instagram was still four

Operating for over 12 years already, we had just sold the printing side of Chilli - 80% of our business! Going from an industrial building in Warana to the picturesque offices we’re currently in on Lake Kawana, we were taking a huge leap of faith starting a magazine. But in this industry, if you aren’t constantly evolving, you’re quickly left behind. We started ‘Business Matters’ not just to assist Chilli, but because many of our B2B clients were crying out for a publication with a strong business message. As client demand grew, so did our team - Strategists, Web Developers, Copywriters, Digital Gurus, Videographers and Content Creators. After four years, we decided it was time to sell ‘Business Matters’ and focus on our true passion - Marketing.

The BEST IS YET TO COME! In the past twelve years, massive changes have occurred for Coastline BMW, located on Nicklin Way, Currimundi. After 30 years of ownership by the Kurz family, through three generations, in 2017 the stateof-the art dealership transferred leadership to the former General Manager, Brad Butcher of the Autopact Group. With 100 per cent staff retention during the transition, Coastline BMW was able to secure yet another Australian BMW Dealer of the Year award, its fifth! For a number of years, BMW has been an undisputed global frontrunner in the move towards sustainable energy powering

cars. With the advent of electric and hybrid vehicles through evolving technology, BMW continues to strive towards improved innovation and product development. There is now a hybrid version of most models.

In 2005, the iconic MINI brand (owned by BMW) was an exciting addition to the dealership, and as of December 2017, after a ten-year absence, the BMW Motorcycles are back on the Coast. With the huge development on the Sunshine Coast in the past decade, Coastline BMW is proud of their continued ability to provide the highest quality luxury driving machines and highest level of customer service to its ever growing and changing client base. They are looking

forward to soon commencing their biggest launch of new vehicles in the company’s history. THEN 2001

This small business, originally named Zone3, has passed through the hands of several owners but it’s been Annette Lasek’s third child for the past 12 years. Annette claims the key to Laserzone’s prosperous span is constant innovation. Seizing an opportunity, she bought into half of the business; several years later the other half was bought by long-term employee and laser tag fanatic Katie Tealby. At the time, it was the only laser tag business in Australia run by two women.

As an independent business owner, Annette ensured that her business would prosper and decided to rebrand from Zone 3 to Laserzone, a name they felt was clear and concise. The centre strives to give its visitors the feeling of leaving reality behind and ensure that every visitor leaves happier. The value they hold highest and teach their team is, ‘Always go the extra mile to make everyone’s day better’.

Laserzone typically recruits new staff twice a year, often with over 600 applicants, which they cut down to a group interview of just 30. The team then chooses who they want to work with, looking for leadership skills, compassion and adaptability. Usually, they engage two or three out of the 30 candidates on a paid three-month trial. At the end of their trial, the new recruits can choose between a sizable cash bonus payment or a position at Laserzone.

DEVINE LEGAL – Mitch Devine For Mitch Devine, Principal of Devine Legal, much has changed for himself, his practice and the legal profession over the past 12 years. Since obtaining his Bachelor and Master of Law Degrees from Queensland University of Technology, and subsequently being admitted to practice as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland, he has devoted his career to serving his clients in two specific areas of law, personal injuries and workplace relations. He opened Devine Legal in 2013, offering legal services to employees, employers and plaintiff personal injuries claims. While he continues to practice exclusively in the areas of employment and personal injuries law, he says a major highlight of the past decade was being asked by the head of the Law School at the University of the Sunshine Coast to write the curriculum for and to lecture in employment law. “Working with talented and enthusiastic students with a passion

for the law was unquestionably a rewarding experience,” he said. The current Chair of the Queensland Law Society’s Workplace Relations Specialist Accreditation Advisory Committee, and a member of the Industrial Relations Society of Queensland, the Australian Lawyers Alliance and Industry of Queensland, Mitch has been recognised as a recommended Lawyer by the respected Doyles Guide in the category of ‘Leading employment Lawyers’.

HRM Embraces Change SALLY DESCH 2006

THEN

Like many of us, HRM has had a few changes over the past 12 years. Sally Desch started the business with a vision of replacing her income in her full-time job by working for herself. She bravely borrowed $10,000 from an aunt and her mum bought her a fax machine (yes, these were around 12 years ago!) and off she went. Fast forward 12 years and, with lots of hard work and a great attitude, HRM now employs six staff and provides up to 60 staff each week on a labour-hire basis.

Sally is particularly proud of the fact that HRM were the first agency on the Sunshine Coast to receive the new labour hire license.

The recruitment industry has certainly seen some changes in this time. It hasn’t been survival of the fittest but more survival of the most adaptable! The term ‘consultant’ has never been truer than it is right now in the HR industry. Sally says her team loves to become an extension of the client’s business and partner with them rather than simply transact. HRM’s service model and services have changed over the years, too. The team now offers Outsourced HR Services, Permanent Recruitment and Temporary/Labour Hire Services.

“We have grown and matured as a business; I think I know what I am doing now!”

NOW

Sally’s husband Stef has recently taken leave from his career as a Police Officer to be more involved in the business. HRM has had a few physical moves over the 12-year period, too, starting in Caloundra, then moving to Birtinya. These days the business is more centrally located in Maroochydore at the Kontiki Building in Plaza Parade. www.hrmcc.com.au

STEPS Group Australia has grown from the personal passion of a few Sunshine Coast locals to a national for-purpose organisation that supports thousands, has reached many milestones and has many still ahead. In 1989, a small group of parents came together to work towards the common goal of overcoming barriers to ensure long-term job opportunities for young people with a disability. By 1990, STEPS had opened an office in Maroochydore with four staff providing employment support to young people with a disability aged between 15 and 24 years old. Today, STEPS Group Australia has offices across Australia delivering extensive services in employment, education and

training and community services for people of all abilities. Managing Director of STEPS Group Australia, Carmel Crouch, one of the founders says, “Although the organisation has grown significantly, its initial core values remain”. “In all our services, with every customer we work with, we want to make a difference by providing opportunity and support, so they can achieve their goals. In the beginning, STEPS was only able to support a small number of people; now we provide diverse services supporting people throughout Australia.” One of the biggest achievements to date was the opening of STEPS Pathways College in Caloundra in 2017, to provide day and boarding programs for young people living with a disability.

“It is one of our most innovative programs and demonstrates our commitment to achieving equality and opportunity for all people living with a disability,” Carmel said. “We have received so much support from the community and I think the Pathways College will continue to grow; we have many exciting milestones ahead of us and we will reach them together,” Carmel said. www.stepspathway.com.au

BY BENN WILSON

It’s been nine years now since the beautiful five-star Rumba Resort first opened its doors and, on 1 August 2018, it welcomed new owners Benn and Leslie Wilson.

Bill Darby, one of the former owners, certainly built a reputation on the Sunshine Coast for this beautiful location and Benn and Leslie are excited to follow in his footsteps in maintaining Rumba as the ultimate destination for holidaymakers and conferences and events.

A FEW OF THE REGULAR EVENTS RUMBA IS HOSTING FOR LOCALS (AND VISITORS) ARE:

TUESDAY 6 NOVEMBER: Melbourne Cup-themed event with lavish platters, all day grazing stations, sweeps, live entertainment after the races, best dressed and lucky door prizes. FRIDAY KNOCK-OFFS: Kick start the weekend with your favourite tipple and choose from our gourmet pizza menu, available from 3-8pm every Friday. THERE’S LIVE MUSIC IN 26DEGREES BAR EVERY SATURDAY AND SUNDAY FROM 3PM.

They are certainly no strangers to the industry having run highly successful establishments in both Byron Bay and Noosa. They are truly excited to bring a fresh approach to this fabulous resort and further develop 26degrees Bar & Venue and the conference facilities. The fantastic thing about the conference facility at Rumba is that everything is put together at the same time; accommodation, food and all your conference needs are all handled under the one roof. This means you can set and forget and let the Rumba team put together the perfect package for you and your guests. Benn and Leslie are already loving immersing themselves in the Caloundra community and contributing to developing Caloundra as a must-visit destination.

FITNESS MATTERS

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EMS TRAINING FOR

(CHRONIC) LOW BACK PAIN

Are you wondering what the link is between EMS and wealth? Imagine if you suffered from chronic back pain and had tried everything to be able to live pain-free again. Imagine finding a solution that opened an array of choices in life, like playing sport, or made simple tasks like vacuuming easy. That would be wealth.

EMS is more commonly used for weight loss and body shaping as it’s a full body training program. However, it is very popular to treat injuries and back pain as well. Those scientifically proven to benefit from EMS include the elderly, people suffering from incontinence or weak pelvic floor, postpregnancy, rehabilitation, professional sports, tradies and couch potatoes.

EMS training offers a long-lasting solution by supporting or resolving the cause of the pain. By reaching deep muscles in your core and back that can’t be reached with conventional exercise, it helps your own body lengthen and stabilise your spine. It supports injuries. The EMS training massages and relaxes your muscles during a 20-minute session, resolving knots, muscle spasms and pinched nerves. EMS training gives better results than conventional strength training for the whole body and for remedial purposes for the back.

REDUCTION OF BACK PAIN AFTER 2 AND 6 WEEKLY SESSIONS

HERE ARE SOME OF THE LIFE IMPROVEMENTS EXPERIENCED BY OUR TRAINEES (RECOVERING FROM BACK PAIN): • Being able to work again, resulting in financial freedom and wealth in the true meaning of the word • The choice to do what you enjoy, such as weeding the garden, maintaining your house or going surfing without having to be in pain for days/weeks afterwards • Improvement in mood, feeling more energetic and relief from chronic pain with a quick weekly solution GENERAL INFORMATION ON (CHRONIC) BACK PAIN Back pain is the second most common reason why people see a doctor for treatment (only beaten by upper respiratory infections). It is also the most common cause for people to miss work. Studies done at Harvard University showed chronic back pain can affect you emotionally. Links have been made with people socialising less than normal and even depression.

Statistics of EMS science for back pain: (BOECKH-BEHRENS, W.-U. / GRÜTZMACHER, N. / SEBELEFSKY, J., unpublished dissertation, University of Bayreuth, 2002).

The reasons for back pain range from pre-existing conditions in the back itself (like scoliosis) to arthritis in the knees. Other common reasons are sprains and strains, disc damage, poor activation of the core and glutes, sciatica, other inflammatory conditions and injuries. HOW DOES EMS BENEFIT LOWER BACK PAIN? As opposed to a TENS machine, which temporarily blocks a pain path,

ROELIE SCHMIDT FITIN20 Owner

With a 10 year history of training elite athletes and being active in the medical field, Roelie Schmidt is passionate about the potential and science of EMS training. Key part of our studio is creating a supportive and inviting environment that is first in the field of EMS fitness and remedial treatment.

Here is what Tony had to say about how his weekly EMS sessions have cleared his chronic back pain IN JUST 4 WEEKS! “I feel really good after an EMS session. I really feel like I have done a proper full body workout. The biggest thing for me is that my lower back pain has disappeared in just 4 weekly sessions. I tried chiropractors, physios, acupuncture. I have tried everything in the last couple of years for my lower back pain and it didn’t work. Currently I have no more pain, and it lasts the entire week. And the mobility in my back is remarkably better than before I started my EMS training.’’

EDUCATION MATTERS

GIVE CHILDREN RESPONSIBILITY

THAT SCARES OR SURPRISES YOU

We have had our two University-aged children home for their break and seeing them jump in and help with the daily jobs reminded me why my wife and I still need to continue to work on this with our two younger children! Building responsibility in our children is such an important task. We know the statistics of increasing helplessness with some young people and what is needed is responsibility! Most children rise to a challenge when it’s sincerely given and backed by realistic expectations. As parents, we need to work hard to provide opportunities for children to contribute to their family, so they can learn about responsibility rather than simply what they can take from the family. • Encourage your children from a young age to make a contribution so it becomes habit-forming. Remember, not every child will help equally. If your children are schoolaged and do very little to help, then start with a few jobs each day and gradually increase the number. • Give children responsibility that scares or surprises you. Once my children could reach the pedals, they were mowing the lawns! From the age of about six or seven, our children unpacked the dishwasher each morning, plates and all. I’ve now moved one of them on to sanding and re-staining our outdoor furniture! It’s about teaching and showing what needs to be done and how to do it. Children rise to the challenge set by their parents. Give your child or teenager something that makes you think, ‘they can’t do that’! Be aware to accept, however, that accidents may happen. • Make sure the responsibility is real. Setting the table, making beds and tidying rooms are jobs that others benefit from. Giving jobs that others rely on teaches them that their help is needed.

34 ISSUE 89

• If a child forgets then no one else does the task. If a child doesn’t empty the dishwasher then it’s still there when they come home from school. Sounds tough but that’s how the real world operates. When you empty it, it becomes your responsibility. When we’re time-strapped it’s usually easier to do their jobs for them. There is nothing wrong with this occasionally as we help each other out in families. However, if you are always doing a child’s job then it may as well be yours. • Place help and responsibility on a roster. The use of rosters has the advantage of placing responsibility on the children, not you. Remind them to check the roster, not to do their jobs! It’s a subtle but important difference.

It’s all about teaching our children how to have responsibility through contribution. www.saac.qld.edu.au m

OF OUR COMMUNITY Wealth is not about affluence, it’s about vibrancy. It’s the way we interact, support and collaborate. It’s about old-style values, the consideration of others and the ripple impact we create. These are all components of people, creating a vibrant community. I believe it’s always about people. For a long time, I have recognised and admired the vibrant spirit of our community, the heart and soul of the Sunshine Coast. I have wondered what it is that creates such an atmosphere. It’s not difficult to pinpoint: our environment is magnificent, pristine and beautiful, so it’s not hard to live here happily. But what creates the heart-warming spirit of our region? I believe anyone who lives here knows they are blessed; we are lucky to live here. Just ask your neighbour or the next person you chat to at the local supermarket or at school pick up; you will soon hear words of gratitude and complimentary comments about where we are lucky enough to live.

But there is something else too, which makes us especially lucky and one I am proud to feel a part of. People here are happy to embrace and empower each other, share their ideas, celebrate others’ success and support each other when ‘the chips are down’. Our people come together to rally around those who are needy or ailing when unfortunate circumstances prevail. People seek to lift them up, give them something, anything to help them, from small to great things - they give what they can. I have seen this first-hand for many years. The generosity of our community through the programs we run in our stores is humbling; from popping a few ‘bob’ into a donation tin on the counter and cooking snags at a sausage sizzle fundraiser in support of their sporting club or school, to making a generous donation of goods or services to add to a raffle or charity fundraiser.

That is what defines true wealth to me - having people around us who care, who want to lift us up, empower us and celebrate with us. That’s the true heart and soul of a community and is exactly what delivers community vibrancy. ca Award Winner | 2015/16 IGA State and National Retail Excellence Award Winner | 2017 IGA National Community Award Winner | 2017 IGA Hall Of Fame Award winner | 2018 IGA State Retailer of the Year

COMMUNITY BUSINESS

THE TRUE WEALTH

36 ISSUE 89

Does your business sell products? You may think that just because you on-sell products that are manufactured by another company, you’re not liable for any personal injury or property damage that these products cause. This may not necessarily be the case. Do you make the products yourself? You may be held responsible legally for any loss your manufactured products cause.

Do you re-label products? With the growing popularity of online stores, many people are setting up online businesses as well as retail stores. Even something as simple as changing the product label may affect who is liable for any damages the product may cause. Even if you do not alter the actual product itself, changing the sticker on the front of the product alters who is deemed to have manufactured the product and, therefore, is liable. Do you import whole products or parts from overseas? Even if another company makes the product or the parts, as the business importing them from a foreign country you are deemed the manufacturer in Australia. This means you may face legal action if customers suffer personal injury or property damage caused by the failure of your product.

What if your product requires a recall for safety reasons? Could your business afford to operate after a mass stock loss caused by circumstances outside of your control? While you may be taking every possible precaution you can think of, something is always bound to go wrong. Whether it be as simple as a minor imported part failure, or a product you have relabeled having an unlabeled ingredient, the public, property and personal

damage is real and can add up quickly. On top of being liable for the costs of damages caused, you may also face large legal bills. Where your products and all their parts are made, who made them and whose name is on the label affects who is considered the manufacturer and, therefore, may be held liable for loss or damage caused by the product. With a comprehensive insurance policy, you can rest assured that you and your business can be covered in the event of a disaster, including legal costs. Just like an accountant or lawyer who provides you with professional advice, based on years of training and experience, a qualified insurance adviser can help guide you and your business’s needs. When arranging insurance, many people don’t seek out advice or fully understand the details of their policy and can, unfortunately, be underinsured or not insured in their time of need. An insurance broker can give you advice to make sure you have the right cover for your unique business needs. An adviser will help you assess your business risks and exposures and source the market for a policy that offers the best cover and value, saving you time, effort and stress and allowing you to focus on what is important to you. m www.awesoinsurance.com.au

Everything can seem as though it is moving along just fine, but the due diligence process must still be completed. It is during due diligence that the buyer decides whether he or she is going to finalise the deal. Much depends on what is discovered during this important process. The purpose of due diligence is to assess the benefits and liabilities of a proposed acquisition by inquiring into all relevant aspects of the past, present and predictable future of the business to be purchased. Let’s look at some of the main items that both buyers and sellers should have on their respective checklists. INDUSTRY STRUCTURE You should determine the percentage of sales by product line. Additionally, take the time to review pricing policies, product warranties and check against industry guidelines. HUMAN RESOURCES Review your key people and determine what kind of employee turnover is likely.

OPERATIONS Operations are key, so you’ll want to review all current financial statements and compare those statements to the budget. You’ll also want to check all incoming sales and at the same time analyse both the backlog and the prospects for future sales. ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Environmental issues are often overlooked, but they can be very problematic. Issues such as lead paint and asbestos, as well as ground and water contamination, can all lead to time-consuming and costly fixes. MARKETING Have a list of major customers ready. You’ll want to have a sales breakdown by region as well. If possible, you’ll want to compare your company’s market share with that of the competition. THE BALANCE SHEET Accounts receivable will want to check for who is paying and who isn’t. If there is bad debt, it is vital to find that debt. Inventory should also be checked for work-in-progress as well as finished goods. Finally, when buying or selling a business, it is vital that you understand what is for sale, what is not for sale and what is included, whether it’s machinery or intangible assets such as intellectual property. m www.franchisebrokers.com.au/dione-mauric

MANUFACTURING If your business is involved in manufacturing, then every aspect of the manufacturing process must be evaluated. Is the facility efficient? What is the equipment worth? Who are the key suppliers? How reliable will those suppliers be in the future? TRADEMARKS, PATENTS AND COPYRIGHTS Trademarks, patents and copyrights are intangible assets and it is important to know if those assets will be transferred. Intangible assets can be the key assets of a business.

MONEY MATTERS

UNDERSTAND YOUR INVESTMENT SMA OR IMA – What do they mean? When it comes to investing, most of us have experienced or heard stories of great success or of great failure. However, amidst the economic turmoil, an evolving investment advisory industry and technological innovation, investors are now benefiting from the rise of Independent Financial planners and superior investment options. Traditionally, most investments, including superannuation, were accessed via a pooled investment vehicle, such as a unit trust or managed fund with direct share investments. These vehicles expose you to the irrational behaviour of other investors, are not transparent, may have liquidity issues and tax consequences are outside of your control. Buying into a managed fund with substantial unrealised gains means that if the fund suddenly sells those assets, you may get a surprise tax bill. Separately Managed Accounts (SMA’s) and Individually Managed Accounts (IMA’s) are more recent options gaining prominence. Clients maintain beneficial ownership of the direct shares, which is key, however, there are distinct differences. An SMA is a product – each investor gets the same model portfolio An SMA client invests in a model portfolio managed by a professional investment manager. Each investor in the SMA holds the same stocks (subject to some trading cost rules), so when the SMA portfolio manager changes the portfolio, the change is made to all investors’ portfolios, irrespective of their capital loss or gain position or taxation consequences. SMA’s are accessed via a platform. Usually, a financial advisory firm will pre-select their preferred professional SMA Manager and a platform that provides the administration and reporting. The financial advisory firm may ‘white label’ an SMA Manager under their own brand. An IMA is a service – each investor’s portfolio is individual and tailored for them. IMAs provide a superior approach to portfolio management which may be described as “bespoke” or “tailored” for each client. While IMA portfolio’s may ultimately hold common stocks, each portfolio is considered, built and maintained on an individual basis. You also have the option of retaining existing equities and they can be transferred in and out without triggering a capital event.

Every share purchase or sale is individually considered for every client. And when you consider the adage that two of the most important aspects of investing are “what you paid for it and what you sell it for”, this becomes a very significant IMA attribute. In contrast, SMAs are mandated to buy into the model portfolio regardless of price when a client invests. Having greater control, transparency and flexibility allows for superior risk management and taxation outcomes, and these investment methodology attributes are the backbone for better risk vs reward returns. An IMA Portfolio service suits investors that value personalized service and are concerned about capital preservation. m www.archfp.com.au Disclaimer: This information has been prepared by Financial Planners Alliance Pty Ltd, ABN 89 610 060 985: AFSL 485276. LEGAL MATTERS

Don’t underestimate

THE VALUE OF SUPERANNUATION

when it comes to separation Did you know that superannuation is classified as an asset in family law? Although superannuation is not a liquid cash asset it still plays a part in building your wealth. For family law purposes, superannuation is property that can be divided between separating couples. Separating couples can split superannuation between them by rolling over the members superannuation into the non members superannuation. A superannuation split does not convert into a cash asset that can be immediately used by the non members spouse but will instead increase the value of the superannuation the non members spouse has. The non members spouse will be still subject to the superannuation laws.

SUPERANNUATION VALUATIONS It is necessary to understand the different types of superannuation; the main types are accumulation, defined benefit and self-managed. It is important when separating to ascertain what type of superannuation your former spouse may have as this can significantly impact on the value of the superannuation. Sometimes it may be complex and further valuations are required; for example on paper the superannuation may appear as a value of $5,000 in a pension phase however upon obtaining a valuation the value is $130,000. The difference can have a significant impact on the net pool of the parties. It is important for a party seeking a superannuation split to complete a required form which is sent to the superannuation trustee to obtain the relevant information. The information provided by the trustee will assist a party to decide if a further valuation is required.

HOW CAN YOU DIVIDE SUPERANNUATION? For a superannuation split to occur the parties must: • Enter into a written agreement by way of a Binding Financial Agreement • Reach an agreement and document the agreement through Consent Orders, or • Obtain a Court Order if no agreement can be reached

REQUIREMENTS If it is the parties’ intention for a superannuation split, then the trustee of the superannuation must be informed. The parties are required to tell the superannuation fund of the wording of the order and essentially ask for their approval. Once the splitting agreement or order by the Court has been approved, then the relevant document is to be served on the trustee, who will then implement the agreement. m

After spending 15 years working in the IT industry, as well as dedicating years to successfully completing a Bachelor of Scientific Nursing, Kerrie Smith had had enough of feeling trapped and limited by physical injury, mental apathy and emotional poverty. Now the owner of Moxy Fitness and Life, Kerrie feels more strongly than ever before about the value of living a fit, adventurous and healthy lifestyle. She started Moxy to share her wealth of knowledge and experience in health, her passion for movement and her philosophy that: “Wealth is measured by how well we live our lives through the pursuit of a fit body and mind; a rich health bank account, not a stash of possessions!” The definition of ‘moxy’ is ‘force of character; determination; energy; the ability to face difficulty with courage or nerve’. And there’s no doubt that Kerrie has it. Passionate about health, fitness and helping others since a young age, her personal achievements are clear evidence that putting thoughts down on paper, scribed into S.M.A.R.T. goals (Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely) and taking consistent daily action, will get you your dream. A gold medal international black belt karate champion, Kerrie knows the challenge many have when it comes to confronting fears and conquering goals. Despite her vertigo and extreme fear of heights, she recently scaled Mt Tibrogargan and Mt Beerwah in the Glasshouse Mountains, simply because they terrified her. In the coming year, she will be riding a HarleyDavidson to Perth and back again to hike the Bibbulmun Track raising awareness for RizeUp Australia, a charity which fundraises for

Investing in oneself and others, having fun and engaging in a variety of adventurous fitness activities, while enjoying the feeling of abundance in moving your body provides, is the valuable message Kerrie communicates to all her clients. She offers a multitude of workouts, including bodyweight exercises at home, boxercise classes in the park, hiking through the bush and physical fitness training for clients who wish to improve their riding position and endurance on their motorbike rides. When she and her clients are laughing and smiling with sheer exhaustion, their sense of mutual accomplishment provides a priceless reward. Together with her ‘Moxy Squad’ team, they will hike 100km in 48 hours in the Brisbane Oxfam Trailwalker! Now that definitely takes moxy. There is a plethora of misinformation in the fitness industry; as a nurse, Kerrie believes that building knowledge around evidence-based research is the most honest, credible way she can contribute to the needs, wants and safety of her clients. Her five steps to a prosperous wellness account are sure to help anyone who wishes to balance the books if they are experiencing a deficit:

1

HABITS form 40 per cent of the actions we take daily so start creating them. Consider your good and bad habits, write them down and define which ones contribute positively to your physical, mental and spiritual health. Eliminate or change the bad ones and congratulate yourself on the good ones!

2

DISRUPT bad habits by making simple substitutions; for example, swap 15 minutes of sitting watching television for 15 minutes of getting on an exercise bike or going for a walk. Eventually, you will create new, better, healthier habits!

3 4 5

DEVELOP easy cues to help convert those habits into rituals, your new way of life. For example, set a daily alarm for exercise time in the morning and place the alarm on top of your exercise clothes. You’re up so you may as well exercise!

SPEAK positive affirmations into your life. Always tell yourself you are a healthy person, who eats fresh whole foods and moves their body every day! GET the support of friends, family and a new workout group. By sharing your fitness journey, you remain accountable to yourself and others.

When a prospective client seeks her help to embark on their personal trek towards improved health and fitness, for Kerrie, it all begins with listening and understanding that person’s world. It’s about developing customised programs specifically for that individual’s abilities and preferences, creating a plan with timed goals, motivating and inspiring through education and exploration into different health options and providing committed support through regular close contact. Moxy Fitness and Life will give you value-for-money and get you well on your way to a fit body, fit mind and a fit life. There is no doubt in Kerrie’s mind that your health is definitely your wealth. e www.moxyfitnesslife.com.au

Start building and protecting your wealth

TODAY! Do you have that constant nagging feeling in the back of your mind, knowing you could be financially better off but you’re not sure how? Well, there is no time like the present, so here are five simple steps you can take to start building and protecting your wealth today.

STEP 1: ESTABLISH A HOUSEHOLD BUDGET We live in a world where immediate satisfaction and the ability to overspend is not generally feared. In fact, it’s quite common and often people are completely unaware of exactly how much surplus cash is available to them on a week-to-week basis. To be effective in moving towards achieving goals, understanding your available cash flow is paramount. STEP 2: ESTABLISH FINANCIAL GOALS Identifying your financial goals and timeframes is key in planning and moving towards the future you would like. You may have heard that all goals should be ‘SMART’ goals: Specific, Measurable, Agreed upon Realistic and Time-based. The more detailed and focused your goals are, the better your chances are of achieving them! STEP 3: REVIEW YOUR SUPERANNUATION Knowing where your Super monies are held and how they are invested is something that some people overlook. It is important that the investment selections and decisions made consider your personal goals and situation. Seeking advice from your Financial Adviser and reviewing your account every six to twelve months is an important step in ensuring your retirement savings are growing efficiently whilst keeping your retirement plan in mind. STEP 4: REVIEW YOUR PERSONAL INSURANCE There are four different types of personal insurance cover that could be available to protect you and your loved ones in different circumstances.

These include: Life Insurance (a lump sum payout to your

nominated beneficiaries upon death), Total and Permanent Disability Insurance (a lump sum payment should you suffer a specified significant disability or illness), Income Protection Insurance (a monthly payment to partially replace employment income in the event of an accident, injury or illness) and Critical Illness Insurance (also known as ‘Trauma Insurance’, designed to provide a lump sum payout in the event of specified traumatic medical events). STEP 5: SEEK A PROFESSIONAL THAT CAN ASSIST YOU AND HELP KEEP YOU ACCOUNTABLE One of the most important, if not the most important step, is to seek the assistance of a qualified Financial Adviser who specialises in creating and implementing a tailored financial plan based around your specific financial goals and personal circumstances. DO YOU HAVE SOMEONE EXPERIENCED IN YOUR CORNER? Would you like to have your very own Financial Planner to help you get things in order? You don’t need to have a lot of money in the bank to benefit from speaking with a qualified Financial Planner. ca If you are keen to learn more or you are ready to act, please visit foxwealthsolutions.com.au or call us on 07 5318 9157.

THERE IS NO WEALTH

Being wealthy means something different to everyone and quite often it has nothing to do with the house you own, the car you drive or your weekly pay packet. The one thing money cannot buy is your health and for many people, it is rightly at the top of their ‘wealth’ list along with family. Physical and mental health is paramount to our ability to earn an income, relate to others and generally live a good life. Yet, many people, through no fault of their own, are often robbed of their ‘wealth’ due to an injury or illness and have little or no insurance in place to protect their ability to earn an income. Without adequate insurance in place, that will either provide an ongoing income (Income Protection Insurance) or a lump sum payment (such as Trauma Insurance or Total & Permanent Disability Insurance), many people are left in a dire emotional and financial situation following a severe injury. The flow on effect from this is only ever seen by the close family, who feel the financial burden almost immediately as they adjust their lifestyle and possibly their home for the injured person. In an instant, family dynamics are changed forever. These types of illnesses or injuries happen all too often. Imagine for a moment that you were going about a normal everyday activity, like shopping or participating in a sporting event. If you were to have a fall or accident in which you hit your head, you may very well walk

away from that incident with no long-lasting injuries. But what if that knock to the head left you with a Traumatic Brain Injury, whiplash, concussion and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder? There is not a single aspect of your life that would not be forever changed. Your ability to work, care for your family, drive or even think as you once did could be impacted. And recovery could take a long time - if you ever fully recover at all. To have your health taken from you is one thing, but to not be able to afford to live is another. Many life/trauma insurance and superannuation policies have insurance elements within them that allow for lump-sum payments when you meet the definition of being totally and permanently disabled. Similarly, if you are self-employed, income protection insurance can provide monthly payments that will cover up to 75 per cent of your lost income. As with all contracts, there are strict criteria around the definition relating to disability and injury, so speaking with a licensed financial planner about your own personal circumstances should ensure you have cover that will meet your needs should the worst ever happen. For all of us, good health underpins our quality of life and an unforeseen illness or accident can change everything in a heartbeat. In so many ways, our health is the wealth that enables us to do so much more than earn an income. Don’t take your health for granted. Make sure you have insurance that protects you and your loved ones. Live life to its fullest, enjoying every moment you can with friends and family because that is the basis for a life filled with wealth. ca

Does your business need a

WONDER WOMAN BY VICKIE MAGIC

DOPPELGÄNGER? Christine Genocchio is one powerhouse lady; chatting to her brought three words to mind: RESILIENCE, DETERMINATION and COURAGE. She is one brave lady. Leaving North Queensland to move to the Sunshine Coast on her own with her two children was certainly a big and brave decision for Christine to make, but she has embraced the opportunity for her new life with both passion and purpose and is excited by the possibilities this new beginning brings. Not everyone can come through such change and not only survive but truly THRIVE. It isn’t any wonder that when I asked her who her role model was she said, “Aside from my mum, definitely Wonder Woman!” To Christine, Wonder Woman is a symbol of power, truth and equity, with natural confidence and unmistakable intelligence – traits which Christine certainly shares. Christine has had a multitude of experience in various areas and industries. Starting out at just 15 she was determined to pave her own way, first at Coles and then at KFC. She then acquired a Front of House Certificate gaining her employment at The Sheraton Townsville (now Jupiters) and was poached to be a croupier by Crown Casino in Melbourne. Christine’s next career move was to become a PE/Secondary English teacher, moving to the UK to take on a PE teaching role once her degree was completed. Christine and her partner made the decision to move back to Australia and be close to the family just in time to welcome her son into the world in October 2003. The opportunity came up to join the family company and work ‘back of house’ doing their finances and HR, something for which Christine had a passion. In 2005, she completed her pigeon pair by adding a daughter to the family. As well as being a mum to two young kids Christine, along with her partner and brother, took on active roles in creating a very competitive business in the drill, blast and mining services arena. The business quickly diversified into a strong, competitive locally-owned open cut mining business. Christine was responsible for building all the systems related to financials, HR and compliance, while the two boys focused on clients and operations. She just loved the challenges, the relationships (both internal and external) and she particularly loved the 46 ISSUE 89

culture created within the company. They were very family orientated and focused on employing locally, buying local and giving back to the community. As well as being a company director, Christine’s focus was HR, an integrated management system that met ISO standards, admin, capital expenditure and financials for their group of companies. In 2012, she further added to her skills by completing a Diploma of Business and HR and quickly began her Masters of HR. Christine and her children made the move to the beautiful Sunshine Coast in December 2015. A year later she hit rock bottom, stressed and not sleeping. At 41, with a serious love for business and working with people, she had to figure out what to do next. It was back to square one, in a new place, working out how to support herself and her children. Christine decided that she would start something herself, coming up with the name ‘Imperium’ which means ‘Empire’ in Latin; she set about creating the business of her dreams with the skills she knew so many people found difficult, namely financials, HR and compliance. The list of services Christine can offer businesses is incredible; she specialises in business development, assisting businesses of any size to streamline their financials, human resources and compliance. It’s about understanding how the client runs their business, analysing their needs and then providing them with a ‘one stop shop’ for back of house services. THESE INCLUDE: Financials: Ensuring the client’s accounting software program is the correct one for their business, then balancing the books either onsite or remote. This creates a streamlined process that is accurate, honest and in line with statutory legislation. Christine can help with accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, BAS, IAS, end of financial year, budgeting and forecasting, reports and reconciliations, financial systems and procedures. Human Resources: Ensuring a business has all the necessary HR policies and procedures and that they align with legislation. Imperium Corporate Services can pretty much be there for you from the get-go; they can assist with the onboarding process

through to terminations/resignations. Services include but are not limited to employee agreements, rates of pay, award clarification, training, inductions, mentoring, leave calculations, resignations, terminations and redundancies. They can train managers or staff on how to perform employee appraisals, manage your team effectively, change management or just give support when needed. Compliance: Reviewing your current, or setting up, Quality & WHS systems to check for compliance and opportunities for improvement. This will enhance your business and show that you are committed to the continual improvement process. Other areas that can be looked at include document control and creation, style guides and templates, presentations. The type of businesses Christine tends to work with don’t generally have a full-time bookkeeper or HR department. Alternatively, they might be larger businesses who need training or refreshers on certain financial, HR and WHS topics. Sometimes a business wants to introduce an induction process, which Christine can create and help implement.

We asked Christine what she loves about living on the Coast so far. “I love to live near the beach and we are so spoilt for choices here. My favourite is Buddina Beach; there is something about that place that is just so relaxing and peaceful. It’s my place to go to when the sun is rising, soaking in the Vitamin D and the sound of the waves is so meditative. It takes my worries away and inspires me to appreciate the little things in life. I love the weather, the lifestyle, the food (so fresh and amazing), the opportunities for my kids in both sports and beyond school life and, of course, the beautiful friends I have made. “The Sunny Coast is the place to have your own business and my aim is to support those people with their vision and journey.” a www.imperiumcs.com.au

On the beautiful Sunshine Coast, you can have the best of both worlds - an incredible place to call home and a lifestyle that is the envy of the rest of the country!

The Sunshine Coast is still experiencing excellent growth in real estate transactions. In fact, according to RPData/CoreLogic’s most recent property report, 94 per cent of all property sales were sold at a profit! The REIQ (Real Estate Institute of Queensland) report talks about our lifestyle market continuing to drive the growth of sales and rental markets across the area. Combine that with the fact that we are still the most sought-after destination on the East Coast for baby boomers and now, with all the infrastructure we have, for families to take advantage of the incredible educational facilities. Both the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast outperformed Brisbane, reaching an annual growth in prices in the range of five to six per cent for the past year. So, what does this mean for you? If you are considering selling, then this is a fantastic time for you to make a profit on your purchase price, so you can list with confidence. Buyers are still flocking to the Coast, whether they be owner-occupiers or investors. As a buyer, you can rest easy knowing that you own a slice of the Sunshine Coast which is going to continue to increase in value. Investors have something to smile about as well! The Sunshine Coast has become one of the most expensive rental markets for three-bedroom houses and townhouses. Couple that with having the best property managers looking after your investment, you are smiling all the way! THE MAKING OF HAPPY CHILDREN; A DOCTOR’S SECRET INGREDIENTS WITH DR KATHY MURRAY What does growing a happy and successful child mean to you? As a parent or teacher, have you wondered how to build a child’s key early life skills? Resilience, self-confidence, compassion and being happy are learnt skills. Extensive, current research allows us now to educate children to be happier and more successful. Here’s one real lesson: using self-focused words like, ‘That’s a nice painting, I love the colours’ is unfortunately about ‘you’ not your child. By saying, ‘I can see you’ve worked for a long time on your painting. Tell me about it’, the focus is on your child’s skills, interests and happiness when talking about their painting. YOUR BUSINESS IS CREATING WEALTH BUT IS IT PROTECTED? This is an actual example of how we were able to help one of our clients: The client’s brother had total control over the client’s business. He was the trustee of the business which hampered the company’s ability to grow and put the assets at risk. We helped put changes in place that: Increased the company’s ability to grow via bank funding Enabled the company to employ more staff and increase turnover and profitability For most of us, our business is our second biggest asset behind our house. Are you protecting it effectively? Protecting your assets can take many forms, including insurances, legal documents and business structures. We specialise in working with you to ensure you have the appropriate structure for your business; that is, one that allows you to not only minimise tax now but also minimise tax on sale and protect your assets along the way. It’s all about understanding the ‘what’ (the setup of your entity structures decides who can control your assets) and the ‘why’ (Are you in control of your business? Are your assets protected? Are you scared you could lose the lot?).

Gave control over the business Increased financial security and peace of mind You, too, could benefit from our advisory services to increase your wealth and wellbeing! Give us a call and discover how we can work with you to create a brighter future.

Wealth means different things to different people. Some people look at wealth as a stash of cash and assets whilst others prefer time and flexibility to do the things they want to do. What does it mean to you? For me, time is important, so I consider myself wealthy when I can make money in my business but also have the time to spend with my family. Sound familiar to anyone?

Recently we began working with a new client who had a good business but was stressed over cashflow and bookkeeping in general. She had heard of the ‘Profit First’ system (as in the book ‘Profit First’ by Mike Michalowicz) and wanted to use the same principals for her business, so she could focus on day-today operations and automate the business to build her wealth. She also valued her time as a parent and considered the time spent with her kids was irreplaceable. To help her, we first checked that the systems were set up correctly. Going forward, we were able to: Reconcile her accounts (yes, that’s probably a given for a bookkeeper) Provide advice regarding distributions between accounts to adhere to the ‘Profit First’ system Remind her of any bills due and payable so she wasn’t late again (a little friendly reminder) Remind her of any invoices not paid so she could remind her clients Give weekly reports via video on the cash flow of her business This was a great result that allowed her to build her business and not sweat the small stuff, whilst giving her time to spend with her family and the clarity to make decisions. If you would like more information on the ‘Profit First’ system or setting your business up to create wealth, feel free to give Victoria a call on 0419 179 177. WRITTEN BY DREW RUSSELL

Whilst not everyone is able to compete in the Tour de France, we all grew up owning at least one bike in our lifetime - or at least dreaming of owning our own bike. But like racing bikes, it’s only a matter of time before even casual riders will need to have their bike tuned up or repaired.

how important it is for people with a disability to have valued social roles, like being an employee! I hope as the enterprise grows we can move people into the open employment market.”

P2P’s new social enterprise Cycle UP is the place to go for servicing or repairing your bike. This business with a purpose provides employment and training opportunities for people with a disability, and others in the community, who would like to learn the art of bicycle mechanics. They rejuvenate and repair unwanted and unused bicycles for sale, redirecting them from landfill, as well as providing maintenance and bike servicing at very reasonable rates. They also hold bike maintenance workshops for the public.

THE OUTSIDERS

With the backing of P2P, a shed donated by Forest Glen Industrial Sheds, and tools and equipment kindly donated by Reid Cycles, Cycle UP has now been operating since December 2017. Cycle Up currently operates two days a week from Forest Glen and provides mobile servicing at the Sunshine Plaza during school holidays. If you would like more information or would like to book into a workshop, then please call P2P or email cycleup@p2pqld.org.au IT’S NOTHING NEW

With big aspirations and little in their budget, the focus was on creating homeware products from recyclable materials and repurposing waste that was heading to landfill. “Australia alone uses over three billion aluminium tin cans annually. We are repurposing them into beautiful and functional homewares and doing our part in the War on Waste.” To find out more about this social enterprise please contact Gina Gale at P2P.

The Outsiders are a local band that formed as part of the Access and Equity Music Program at East Coast TAFE. Established six years ago, the band has recorded an album and played at several venues, including regular gigs at the Nook and Cranny (before it closed), Fair Day Out and private functions. The band has seven members with a range of disabilities. However, that is no barrier to their talents when it comes to music. Reuben Drake, the drummer, has been involved in the band since the beginning and looks forward to weekly rehearsals and gigs. “I love playing with the band as drumming is one of my passions and I love playing to an audience,” he said. The band members write their own lyrics and music and play a few covers as well. All songs on their album were written by the band. Teacher and band director Michael Cheetham is impressed with their commitment, enthusiasm and abilities.

It’s Nothing New is a unique social enterprise created by coordinator Gina Gale as a response to the lack of employment opportunities for people with intellectual disability.

“We have repeat customers who book us regularly for gigs as they are assured of the quality of the music and crowds the band draw,” he said.

“Essentially they are locked out of the employment market, yet they have some unique qualities that would benefit employers,” said Gina.

The Outsiders are not just making music, they’re making a statement for those with disabilities who aspire to be in a band. a

With a Certificate III in Disability, experience in graphic design, arts and craft expertise, starting Its Nothing New was a natural avenue to pursue. “Upskilling people with an intellectual disability is an empowering strategy that can lead to employment. Through my studies, I learned 50 ISSUE 89

BY EATING WELL WITH MARTIN PENNAY

When you sit down to a meal, it doesn’t matter how big your house is or how much money you have in your bank account. All that matters are the taste, texture, aroma and healthiness of what is in your mouth. We notice that when dinner is yummy and nutritious, the whole family is happier. When dinner is sub-par, it becomes a grind negotiating with children to finish their meal. It’s frustrating when we must resort to unhealthy options for

lack of time. So, we define wealth as having access to great ingredients and enjoying them with loved ones. The wealthiest Asian countries, the Middle East and the USA import large amounts of Australian lamb and beef. Australia also exports large amounts of prawns, swordfish, tuna, salmon and snapper to only those who can afford these fresh luxuries. We are proud to stock all these export quality products, produced locally, at everyday prices. So, you too can eat like the wealthiest people in the world! Lastly, we believe that healthy living is at the core of creating wealth. We encourage our staff to live a healthy lifestyle and work to ensure that we provide customers with the healthiest range of marinades, rubs and meal solutions possible. We want to do our part to free customers from lack of time and poor health choices by providing good value pricing and time-saving product offerings. For without our health, we will never generate wealth! ca

HOW TO CREATE WEALTH

IS THERE REALLY A SECRET TO WEALTH CREATION? NO! I was on a plane recently and noticed someone reading ‘The Secret’. It took great effort on my part to quell my curiosity and not start asking questions to explore what changes they may be seeking. (You will be pleased to know I did mind my own business!) As a coach, I notice that many times people think the solution is something hidden from them when, in fact, most people really do know what they need to do to create change. It’s not a secret; it’s about unearthing what it is you need to do differently to get what you want. It’s about making a commitment to break the patterns of the past and ingrain new habits for future success. Such is the case with making change around your financial position. Recently, in an article about what makes Warren Buffet successful, the journalist attributed his success to his constant thirst for knowledge and willingness to embrace learning. This is key for most successful people. They read, they study other successful people and they work on personal growth and development.

If you do not feel worthy of financial success, you need to put focus, energy and attention on building new pathways of thought. Explore the importance and value of having the success you deserve and pay attention to the inner critic or voice that stops you from getting what you deserve. Change that voice; find a supportive ally to replace that dialogue. This is called reframing and is a powerful tool for change. Research shows that we can alter our brains’ neural pathways, which is great news for all of us in realising that CHANGE is a CHOICE. By deciding to activate new ways of thinking, we create new neural pathways, and, with repetition and focus, we can make new beliefs and behaviour a way of being. Creating both spiritual and material wealth is about continually growing

and expanding the parameters of what you know to be true. Tim Ferriss, in his book ‘Tribe of Mentors’, records one mentor’s practice of changing their mind about one thing every day. When we go about the day with this kind of attention it opens us up to reflection and new opportunities to see things differently. You may hear the sceptics say, “I don’t have time for reading” or “I’ve had enough of studying” but learning happens in so many ways. Be open and think about getting out of your comfort zone. Recognise that for many of us our comfort zones are the first signs of rigid thinking and fixed mindsets. Funnily enough, for many, it is actually a very uncomfortable zone that keeps them wallowing in the same old limiting thought patterns, repeating the same excuses when the reality is that there are many ways to find joy in life. It’s no secret; if you don’t have the mental, physical or material wealth you want or desire you need to pursue new or alternative pathways to learning and growing personally. Set an intention. Get clear on your action and make the decision to move in a different direction. Trust yourself and instead of ‘The Secret’, may I suggest that for financial success you go and get ‘The Barefoot Investor’ by Scott Pape.

IS A WEALTHY COMMUNITY Applications for the 2018 Healthy Towns Awards are now open until 14 September 2018. If your community group builds connections between ‘People, Place or Greenspace’, you are eligible to apply for a Healthy Towns Award and receive up to $5000 in funding.

Healthy Towns is all about supporting rural and regional towns to run projects that improve local people’s health and happiness. Healthy Towns recognises and rewards the important work community organisations in rural and regional towns do to improve health and happiness within the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie area. Projects eligible for a Healthy Towns Award focus on creating connections between people, people with their local community, and greenspace. The connections between People Award recognises projects that bring people together, increase social connections and provide a sense of belonging within their community. a sense of place and are culturally inclusive.

The connections with Greenspace Award recognises projects that are environmentally friendly and have a positive environmental impact locally. OPPORTUNITY MATTERS

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK? When you meet people at a barbecue or at your kids’ sporting match, what’s one of the first topics of conversation? After ’pass the salt’ or ‘which child is yours?’ it’s normally something along the lines of ‘what do you do for work?’. It’s small talk that we’re all used to, that many of us take for granted. But many people don’t have an answer to that question; in fact, they never have. It’s not because they’re unskilled, lazy or unmotivated, it’s because they’ve never been given an opportunity. So, what do I do for work? I lead a team of dedicated employment consultants who support people with disabilities or barriers to work to find jobs they love. It’s not about just giving someone a job though; it’s about equipping them with important life skills for their futures. I can personally assure you that, with the right support, there is no limit to what people with a disability can achieve.

Take Chris for example. The business he was working for closed. After months of unemployment, he decided it was time to ask for help. Chris said that at the time, he didn’t look for a new job, because he didn’t think there would be anywhere suitable for him and his health condition. We didn’t believe that for a second, especially because he had an in-demand Bachelor’s degree and several years of work under his belt.

Today, Chris is in a role that combines his formal qualifications and his skills from previous roles. He started off doing 10 hours a week, and now he’s doing over 30 hours a week and is an integral part of the business where he works. Chris is just one example (I have many more!) of someone who deserved to be given a chance. So, my challenge to you is this: next time you’re looking to add a new team member to your business, consider working with a Disability Employment Service. m www.myemployment.org

Do you remember what it felt like when you got your very first paycheck? I do. It was a sense of independence, pride and satisfaction. People with disabilities want and deserve to have this feeling of financial independence, too. Wealth means something different to everyone and for many of our job seekers, it means simply having the opportunity to use their skills to earn an income. People with disabilities are roughly twice as likely to be unemployed, compared to people without a disability. Why? We’ve come leaps and bounds in many areas of our community, especially when it comes to diversity and inclusion, but it seems that employment for people with disabilities is lagging, and for no good reason.

Our goal is for our Sunshine Coast region to be home to an engaged, connected and inclusive community which embraces diversity and where people are safe and healthy. And that’s right at the heart of council’s new community development campaign, ‘At Home in my Neighbourhood’. Launched in July, it has been put together by our Community Planning and Development team, in partnership with local community and neighbourhood centres, with funding from the Queensland Government. Through ‘At Home in my Neighbourhood’, we hope to encourage new or stronger connections between families who live close by, enjoy our fantastic lifestyle and environment together and strengthen friendships or form new ones. It’s an initiative that supports our Sunshine Coast Social Strategy which has a goal of building a stronger community where people feel included and can participate in community life. Our goal is to not only see neighbours come together during this campaign but continuing to catch up into the future.

And there’s many more listed in the ‘At Home in my Neighbourhood’ toolkit, which is available online. You may also hear the breakfast crew at Hot FM asking their listeners to share their neighbourhood stories to have the chance to win a special event in their neighbourhood at the end of October. All the information on ‘At Home in my Neighbourhood’ is available on council’s website. We’re looking forward to helping more people come together to build friendly, connected neighbourhoods right here on our healthy, smart, creative Sunshine Coast. c

So why should we connect with our neighbours? Here are a few reasons:

• To have fun and celebrate • To hear new and interesting stories • To learn about your neighbourhood history • To assist those who might need a bit of help

That just means you need to strengthen your back of house. Here are some of the challenges you may be facing:

 Set the business up right the first time

• You’re an expert in your field but not sure if you’re looking after your books (financials) and employees correctly

 Maintain good relationships with accountants/ financial advisors for direction and guidance

• You’re time-poor; you’re doing your bookwork late at night on the weekends when you should be spending time with your loved ones • You don’t want to ask anyone for help as you think it’s a sign of weakness • You can’t keep up with the changes that ATO/Fair Work bring out • You’re not educated enough in understanding compliance matters for various external stakeholders, such as ATO, super funds, tax, BAS, PAYG, pay rates. The spine of your business – the part that holds it all together and ensures the business is compliant and sustainable within the industry - is the back of house operations: • Financials: Bookkeeping, AP/AR, reporting to ATO (BAS/IAS) • Human Resources: Retaining your talent or, if a sole-trader, when to employ/outsource

 Have the correct entity structure

 Understand account codes in the software package that is relevant to your business and industry  Ensure insurances, leases and equipment are all in place or there is a plan  Outsource bookkeeping or BAS preparation and lodgement to ensure compliance with ATO  Undergo training on software if you are doing the bookwork yourself  Improve time-management and organisation to be more consistent and productive  If you have employees, understand the new STP requirements  Get up-to-date with payroll changes and new rates of pay, and changes to penalty rates. Getting this wrong can lead to fines from the ATO. Next issue we will look at your HR needs. m www.imperiumcs.com.au

THE NEXT GREAT UNWIND, or is it business as usual? Australia is 10 years into a bull run fueled by record low interest rates, demand for our resources and a subsequent boom in the residential property market. But is it set to continue, or will we see a recessionary environment in the coming year or two? Across the globe, tightening monetary policy, unprecedented debt levels and geopolitical risks all pose potential threats to our economy. Add to that the concerning fact that most stock market corrections typically happen every seven to ten years and it begs the question, what is the Australian economic outlook and are we at risk in the event of a downturn? It’s no secret that property prices down south are cooling. ANZ recently tipped the Sydney and Melbourne property prices to fall by ten per cent as the foreign ownership rules tightened and now auction clearance rates drift lower. In addition, record high levels of household debt are hurting Aussie families as they have borrowed as much as they can, leaving them little leeway if their circumstances change. Given these debt levels are also at a time when interest rates are at record lows, and there is weak wage growth, it inevitably restricts the consumer consumption of goods and services and puts our nation (and banks) in a precarious position if or when rates need to rise. The subsequent potential slowdown in overall growth will then make it tricky to reduce unemployment, boost wage growth and inflationary pressures. It’s a catch 22 position. The Reserve Bank of Australia is widely tipped to keep rates on hold now till 2020 and can’t rule out the next big move is a cut to help stimulate. The RBA now appears to be focused less on inflation, and more on ‘high debt and high asset prices’.

Being concerned about housing debt being too high is a conundrum because if they need to cut interest rates, it may add fuel to the housing boom fire making it easier for people to borrow up big, resulting in further inflating property prices. In addition, Australia is one of the world’s most expensive places to live with many families feeling the pinch with the high cost of living, mortgage repayments and rent. In 2016, the HILDA report (Melbourne Institute’s study of Household Income and Labour Dynamics), one in ten Brisbane residents were experiencing housing stress, spending more than 30 per cent of household income on mortgage or rent. In the outer suburbs of Brisbane, that figure is higher at 11.3 per cent. All this at a time when we have record low interest rates. The world is experiencing unprecedented global debt, with a potential credit crisis in the high-yield bond market. The US Fed Reserve is set to raise rates two more times before the year ends and that risk, together with the various global geopolitical risks to Australia like the current Trade Wars or South China Sea issues make for an interesting conversation about contagion events and our Australian market. Investors need to consider the cyclical timeline of major market moves in both shares and property market, the risk of contagion events and consider the real possibility of a correction in global markets. You can always make money in any market, regardless of the ups and downs; however, it may be timely to evaluate the exposure you have to various asset classes, your timeframe for investment and the capacity you might have to profit from any potential downturn albeit shares, property or fixed-interest based investments. There is no harm in having the conversation, investigating the current global financial situation and how it might impact on Australia going forward. Australia is in a much better position to weather any potential downturn given we didn’t hyperinflate our share market after the GFC in 2008, we have significant buffers in interest rate position and still have Quantitative Easing (money printing) up our sleeve.

After two years working in a private practice on the sunny shores of Palm Beach, Florida, she realised there was no amount of money that could buy her the joy and happiness she’d been seeking since her troubled youth. Originally from New York, this city gal decided to climb aboard a jet and fly to the land Down Under. Perhaps a sojourn in the land of koalas, kangaroos and the Great Barrier Reef was exactly what the doctor ordered.

Dr Shari Hall, now the Principal of Scenic Real Estate, a boutique concierge real estate agency serving the Sunshine Coast, has a story to tell about life, love and the pursuit of financial independence. Growing up in an underprivileged, broken inter-racial family, supported by the government in the form of welfare and food stamps, she made the decision at an early age that life for her children would be different, better and wealthier. Despite her passion for musical theatre and songwriting, with three professionally recorded albums to her credit, she chose the stethoscope and long, arduous hours on-call in the operating theatre to acquire that coveted six-figure income. It didn’t take her long to realise that 16-hour days, stress, anxiety and zero time for a personal life could only lead to catastrophe; ultimately it did, in the form of a sleep-deprived highway collision.

She was left shellshocked on the side of the road, having hit another vehicle after two complete revolutions across three-lanes of 110kph traffic! There’s nothing like a near-death experience to bring you closer to God and what really matters in life. And so, Australia it was, leaving behind the prestigious career, the high-society alcoholic boyfriend, the condo by the beach, the BMW and the highly coveted income she thought was the answer to eternal bliss. With two suitcases, her laptop computer and her Guild acoustic-electric guitar, she said goodbye to it all, in search of herself and the meaning of living a content abundant life. “For most of my adult life, I’ve engaged in an on-going duel between my two selves - the one striving to be more, do more, achieve more and have more, and the one who says, ‘all you need is love’ and to simply be.

‘WEALTHY’ LIFE “There are days when I think my mother is probably rolling over in her grave, wondering why she invested in my Yale and Columbia University education! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say, ‘Why would you ever give up being a Doctor to be a real estate agent?’” The answer only came to light after Shari’s worst year ever; the year her mother passed away and she divorced her husband of 10 years. It was the one-two punch that necessitated a three-month leave of absence from her medical practice, and a complete reevaluation of the who, what, where, how and whys of her existence.

“It took me a full year of quiet self-reflection and inertia to understand and absorb the messages that I was clearly ignoring. When my mother closed her eyes for the last time, I saw a woman who was sad, angry, filled with regret and resentment; in a way, I saw myself. I didn’t want to die being discontented. I wanted to live now, with complete utter joy and daily appreciation for this gift of life.”

According to dictionary.com, ‘wealth’ is defined as a great quantity or store of money, valuable possessions, property or other riches; an abundance or profusion of anything; a plentiful amount. That is, indeed, one way of defining wealth. However, after decades of chasing the almighty dollar, Shari has concluded there are so many more layers to what it means to be wealthy. “I live an abundantly wealthy life! When I wake up each morning, I’m grateful for my next breath and my perpetual heartbeat. When I go for my morning walk because I’ve chosen to make time for self-care, I feel blessed that I live in a place where the air is clean, the birds serenade me and my neighbours wave ‘hello’! When I develop relationships with my clients and help them through their real estate transactions, I’m fulfilled in knowing that I have given them my best effort, with the utmost integrity and skill. When I have the opportunity to volunteer in my local community, I see how my little bit of love can contribute so much for the greater good. And when I hug my children each day and take time out to prepare our evening meals together, I feel I have all I could ever need.” For Shari, real estate is about connection, trust and relationships. Having her own company has allowed her to create the work-life balance she desires while offering a genuine service of the highest standards. Of course, she willingly admits it would be great to win Powerball, but in the meantime, it’s more than enough to love and simply be. www.scenicrealestate.com.au

If you’re in a tendering and quoting industry like ours, you’ll be all too aware of the strategy that some businesses take to win projects. Go in low to get the customers attention and start building the truth up from there.

This strategy has one common outcome - a customer telling the story of how their project budget blew out.

The problem with this strategy is that it’s a race to the bottom. Who can give the lowest price to get the customer’s attention? The race to the bottom is all about easier, cheaper, faster and more. It’s can also sometimes include deception and dishonesty. It’s about being a fling rather than the real thing. A business racing to the bottom could be undercutting competitors, omitting vital inclusions, extorting workers to do more for unfair

Practical advice for finding the best person for the job.

pay, penny-pinching at the expense of quality, and doing anything possible to win based purely on price. A customer can support this race by simply choosing the cheapest, however this simply teaches the market that the most important thing is price rather than value. The problem with the race to the bottom is that you might win. You might be the cheapest, fastest, best corner-cutter in town. But is that what you want to be known for? In business, the reality is that we need to pay fairly for good work. We need to build relationships so that the products of those relationships are the best they possibly can be. It might take a little more work in the early stages, but finding the best person for the job will pay for itself. ca

TIME IS MONEY

CREATING MORE TIME FOR YOU

68 ISSUE 89

Yes, absolutely! Automation is the way of the future. If you want or need more time (and don’t we all?) then automation could be exactly what you’re looking for. When you automate your CRM (Customer Relationship Management System) it means you can set up all sorts of responses and autoresponders to ensure efficiency and improve your time management.

The list of things you can automate your CRM to automatically attend to on your behalf is almost endless; in fact, if you can dream it, it can probably be automated. Just imagine the time and effort and potentially real dollars you could save, not to mention the fact that we constantly mean to send that email or message, but something happens that takes us off track and we end up forgetting.

HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES:

How many times have you written virtually the exact same email to your clients? With automation you can basically write every type of possible email, covering every possible scenario once, and then automate the system to fill in the bits; you can even leave space so that you can personally customise a small section on each one.

On a certain day of each month you need to send clients an email to remind them to do something; with automation, you tick a box to set it up and never think about it again. Within your sales funnel, you send a client a proposal and need to follow them up regularly to get them across the line; with automation, you tick a box to set it up and never think about it again. You want to ensure that you are in regular contact with your clients, to constantly show them love; with automation, you tick a box to set it up and never think about it again. You want to send every one of your clients a birthday greeting once a year; with automation you tick a box to set it up and never think about it again. Okay, the truth is that you will have to think about it again, of course; however, the amount of time taken for each and every task can be reduced considerably.

WITH AUTOMATION, YOU WILL NEVER FORGET AGAIN.

The reality is that if you set up as much of your business as possible to look after itself through automation, you will have more time to grow the business, more time to think up new ideas for prospecting and marketing, and, let’s face it, more time to simply enjoy life. These days systems can be completely automated and customised to ensure your personal touches are included all the way through. It is just incredible the changes that have happened with CRMs. So, if you think automation might be the answer for you, make sure you find someone that has been around; their level of experience and expertise can save you both time and money. m www.englanderdavis.com

SUCCESS MATTERS

FIVE SUCCESS PRINCIPLES FOR CREATING WEALTH Or anything you want in your life! Success is an attitude! If you really want to create the change you are looking for, it’s important to understand that success is an attitude. So many people live their lives accepting whatever results crop up; they take whatever comes to them. If you want to be the master of your success, you must be in control of the results you are getting. Ask yourself, “What am I aiming to achieve; what outcome am I looking for?” 1. Realise money (love, wealth, health etcetera) is an energy. Like all our thoughts and creations, it’s just energy. Money/wealth is limitless. It’s more of a concept than a physicality. Money is an exchange of time and value; if I put in eight hours of work, I can enjoy the experience of buying... insert whatever makes you smile!

It is important to know because these feelings are deciding whether you have a lot of it or not. Money/wealth is only an energy – and it’s a neutral energy. It is neither good nor bad. It is available to become what you would like it to be. Let it be your Good. 4. Decide to have money/wealth today. Fate loves the fearless, but the universe is slow for the indecisive. Decide to have wealth today. You have a right to all the wealth you desire, and if you are still unsure about this, make your decision, once and for all. 5. The big one: Take action! There can be no substitute for taking action and massive action gets massive results! The best-made plans don’t become a reality if you sit around waiting or watching TV! You must be willing to act (ion). You’ve got to be willing to get out there. Many a great idea or plan has died from a lack of action. There’s a saying which goes, ‘Even if you’re sitting on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there!’ You must build up momentum, actually take some steps. As Tony Robbins teaches, ‘Motion creates emotion’; without motion, there will be some ordinary emotions happening for you. m www.setforsuccess.com.au

2. The promissory dollar is only a placeholder as you exchange your time and value; the paper bills are not really valuable to you in and of themselves. A banknote is merely an IOU! Money/wealth is an idea, and this idea can expand or contract according to your beliefs – and it does! 3. Realise this money/wealth energy is affected by your thoughts and actions. Since money/wealth is an energy, as with any energy, it follows thought. So, what do you think about money/wealth? Do you greatly desire it but also fear having it? Is money/wealth good or will it corrupt you? Do you want it, or do you think you shouldn’t want it? How do you FEEL about money/wealth?

YOUR WORLD, YOUR WEALTH BY SHARI HALL

It is a rare child who grows up as a fourth-generation farmer, milking, mustering and branding, and ends up being intrigued by the receipts, invoices, statements and ledgers spread all over the kitchen table when Mum and Dad did ‘the books’ each month. But that is exactly who Jayne Graving is, a woman raised with the ethos that hard work, discipline and respect for serving the team for the greater good is what makes life fulfilling and wealthy. Learning to love the financial management behind the struggle, gaining an understanding of what her parents strived for during those early years, led Jayne to found Arch Financial Planners in 2006. One day, whilst accompanying her father on a visit to his bank manager, Jayne began to question the motives behind the larger banks and lending institutions. Even then she recognised that their primary responsibility was to their corporate shareholders, not her father. Did they truly have his best interests at heart? Could they genuinely help her father? She felt they were treated as a number and, from that day forward, she knew she didn’t want to be treated that way.

Leaving the farm and her isolated country town an hour from Toowoomba, she embarked on a career in banking, initially working for ANZ, then Westpac on the Sunshine Coast as a financial service officer. Her ultimate goal was to learn to create a work environment where ethics, morals and respect were part of the culture and to help people attain their financial life goals. Climbing the ladder of success, she eventually managed six branches and trained approximately 60 staff members. However, like many professional women, she had to make the difficult choice of staying home to raise a family and set her career aside for ten long years. A decade and several degrees later - Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning, FPA Certified Financial Planner accreditation - Jayne re-entered the workplace doing what she knew best. Building upon her core values and vision, she took a leap of faith in 2006 and established her own fee-for-service financial planning company. As an independent organisation, there are no constraints or conflict to dictate how they operate or give advice. “Clients choose us because they value our independent ethos, experience and personalised service. They also like dealing with a local firm with a community conscience and take comfort in knowing their best interests are in our best interest,” she said. Jayne was working as a financial planner in both the 1987 share market crash and the Global Financial Crisis. She has learned that a combination of research and using the latest technological advancements are the basis of an efficient and effective share portfolio management service. Arch Financial Planners’ area of expertise is private wealth management and their Individual Managed Account service. Clients value their transparency and bespoke service which enables greater risk management and can give better tax outcomes. Collaboration with other industry specialists, including lawyers, accountants and mortgage brokers, ensures quality standards are prioritised and maintained in their advice and service. The reason Jayne created AFP was to help people aspire, achieve and live the life they wanted. For each client, time is spent reviewing their personal circumstances, investigating the technical elements they already have in place, like superannuation, estate planning and insurance, researching economic and investment markets, exploring products and providers, and tailoring solutions to their needs.

An avid believer in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Jayne considers your world to be your wealth – your aspirations and accomplishments, your relationships, your health and well-being, your ability to have all your fundamental needs met, and the opportunity to extend your experiences to higher places of purpose and fulfilment. Without knowledge and education about the changing financial landscape (most schools do not teach financial literacy!), it can be an overwhelming task to create a lifetime financial plan; hence the need to engage the services of a dedicated financial planner to help create the vision, dispel the myths and clarify conflicting information and advice, and bring to fruition a successful profitable portfolio. She suggests the following first steps to move towards improving your wealth: 1. Educate yourself on the basic financial planning concepts online from sites like the ASX, ASIC and the ATO. 2. Start saving regularly and understand the powerful benefits of ‘compound interest’ over time. 3. Be smart with debt: live within your means, diversify your investments and understand the risks. 4. Use superannuation wisely, salary-sacrifice if you can, and take responsibility for how your money is invested. 5. Have adequate insurance in case things go wrong. Jayne often reflects on her years on the farm and thinks, that young girl growing up in the country would be proud of the woman she has become. Acknowledging and showing gratitude for the beautiful life she and her family have enjoyed on the Sunshine Coast over the past 30 years, a place where she still finds awe in the surrounding nature and mountains, Jayne now aspires to develop that final tip of Maslow’s pyramid through her financial planning business. The more clients she can help, the more she can give back to her community and help others. A mother of three children, she was one of three parents on the Foundation Committee for Chancellor State College and is proud to be an Ambassador of the philanthropic Buderim Community Foundation. “I am inspired by people that find the courage and strength to rise above their circumstances, challenge ideas, pursue a vision and give back to our community or environment.” e www.archfp.com.au

WHAT IS WEALTH REALLY? Some say being rich is having money and being wealthy is having time. Of course, there are challenges to overcome every day, but do the wealthy worry less about these obstacles because they have the ability and the resources to overcome them?

WEALTH, ALTHOUGH OFTEN MISREPRESENTED IN OUR WORLD TODAY, IS DEFINED IN A VARIETY OF WAYS BY A VARIETY OF PEOPLE.

Wealth is time; wealth is the number of days forward that you can survive without working. Wealth is measured in time, not dollars. Robert Kiyosaki:

Passive income > expenses. David Wood

Being rich is having money; being wealthy is having time. Margaret Bonnano

Wealth is the ability to experience life.

Wealth is not his that has it, but his that enjoys it. Benjamin Franklin

Henry David Thoreau

As you can see, wealth involves so many things. It is not a simple answer, and it changes. James Berman puts it in perspective when he says, “Beyond money for basic needs, wealth remains more a psychological construct than a factor of dollars and cents. And a comparative one at that.” Our real goal each and every day is to get through the day. Wealth is being able to do this well, and for a long period of time. Ayn Rand said, “Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver”.

Mike Kawula says, “Wealth is just an abundance of what you really want.” What does it mean to you? When you think about wealth do you think about money? Or do you think about an abundance of the things that you want? I personally think that Mike Kawula is probably on the money saying that wealth is just an abundance of what you really want. At the end of the day, it’s not black or white. It really is whatever you decide to say it is; it’s one of those things that you decide for yourself. So, think about it, what does it mean to you? How many people do you personally know that are drop dead wealthy, but either don’t have happiness or don’t have health? Wealth without happiness or health is like a body without a head, it ain’t gonna last long. What’s the point? 74 ISSUE 89

It is essential that we realise that wealth is important, and we DEFINITELY want it. Please don’t be one of these people who say they don’t want to be wealthy. If you say that, guess what, the universe will deliver on your wish. Say what you really want which is more than likely wealth, health and happiness. I was coaching someone the other day and he said, and I quote, “I don’t want to be wealthy”. What! Yes, you do, so be very careful what you wish for. Once you put your order in, that’s what is coming back at you, so please ensure it’s what you really want. It’s all in the wording. Our values dictate the most important thing for us, and whilst I’m the first to advocate that wealth isn’t your top value, I am definitely advocating that it is up there towards the top of the list. Too many people say that money isn’t important, money doesn’t make you happy, money isn’t my God, blah blah blah. That is something I used to say myself to be honest; until I realised that I was ordering that! Now my order is loud and clear. I want it all, I want it NOW. I absolutely believe in my heart of hearts that I can have it all and, in the words of Zig Ziglar, you can have everything in life you want. The way forward is to simply help other people get what they want. Yep, I have found the secret to success; whenever I give I get, the more I give of myself the more I get, the more I help others, the more money I make and the more happiness I get. f

WEALTH IS HAPPINESS! BY SHARI HALL

“I’m a fighter and a doer! The best thing someone can do for me is telling me I’ll fail at something; it just makes me go out there and prove them wrong!” When Sheena Canning purchased the Ink Spot in February 2010, without any knowledge at all about the printing industry, there were plenty of hecklers saying, ‘good luck with that!’ She may not have known what CMYK meant then, but now, eight years later, with loyal long-term staff and repeat clientele, the Ink Spot is a thriving business on the Sunshine Coast. In this fast-paced digital marketplace where online print companies create overnight products for millions of customers seeking the most economical bargains, you might wonder how a company with old-fashioned values and a very hands-on approach competes. It’s all about cultivating trusted relationships and making sure the client gets what they need. From the initial concept, from choosing paper stock and ink combinations to the delivery of the ultimate product on time, the Ink Spot delivers at a competitive price with exceptional customer service.

SHEENA AND PATRICK CANNING

76 ISSUE 89

“From me right through the whole factory, we all know our clients and their expectations. We will never, ever not deliver, even if it means working on the weekend or driving something down to Brisbane,” Sheena said.

APPICATIONS ARE OPEN TO JOIN A UNIQUE CO-WORKING SPACE.

Their niche market of clients would prefer to pick up the phone and work closely with their printer, rather than express order a pack of business cards for two dollars and receive minimal to no customer service. The oldest printer at the Ink Spot has 40 years of industry experience, and it is that knowledge and expertise that has people coming back to using tangible printed materials over digital marketing. An over-abundance of Facebook ads and spam have bombarded email inboxes, leaving scores of unopened or deleted emails. To make an impression, vendors and advertisers are now returning to quality print media to get their message delivered.

One of our Real Estate clients told us, “We invest in printing 12-page booklets for their homes because it helps them sell the house quicker for more money when they present a more premium product.” The Ink Spot is not just a printer; the team helps clients work through a variety of different concepts and print options from signage to packaging, presentations and more. Devoting up to 100 hours a week at times, Sheena understands that to be the best, you must give your best. Their wide range of printing services includes leaflets, brochures, flyers, newsletters, stationery, booklets, magazines, business cards, presentation folders and yearbooks, just to name a few! And if what you need is not on the menu, or you are looking for an alternative printed item, all you need do is pick up the phone, have a conversation, share your ideas and they will make it a reality for you. For Sheena, happiness in business is knowing the client has received the best product, her staff has been paid their wages, and there’s not too much stress in the work environment. Having worked 24-hour on-call shifts during the Y2K era in a demanding high-pressure job, she recently learned that life has got to be about balance. You can have all the money in the world, but it won’t buy you health or love. Wealth is happiness. With a never-give-up philosophy, the staff at the Ink Spot strive to consistently offer the best possible service to their clients and the community. Over the years, they have supported many clubs and sporting organisations, as well as a variety of local charities, including Wishlist, the Katie Rose Cottage, Give Me Five for Kids, Sunnykids, Daniel Morcombe Foundation and the Sunshine Coast Children’s Therapy Centre. The future is exciting in the print industry with new types of media and print products evolving all the time. No matter how high tech the industry becomes though, one can be sure that Sheena and her team will always adhere to their old-fashioned ways. “I come across such a large range of people in business and in life, and I have learned a great deal along the way. I treat every client the way I would like to be treated, and that attitude flows through the entire staff. We all want to be here! Our clients know we look after them. It’s all about that relationship.” e www.theinkspot.com.au

BARTERCARD

BUSINESSES SAVE $4.5 BILLION IN CASH The new financial year is a time to assess your business and put positive change into place. While the internet isn’t short of inspirational tips and tricks to make the most of this financial year, the reality is that the everyday ins and outs of running a business are tough – especially in a fast-paced digital world where the only constant is change. From managing budgets to staying relevant and constantly evolving, owning a business isn’t for the faint-hearted! When asked what the most significant challenge in business was, Bartercard members said that apart from staffing, it was cash flow which kept them up at night. While making it in a competitive business world isn’t easy, Bartercard addresses these pain points. The cash-alternative marketplace not only attracts new customers but boosts cash flow by letting members save business and lifestyle expenses across almost every industry. In fact, its saved $4.5 billion for small business owners since 1991, letting them outsource more in their business to focus on growth. The concept of barter isn’t new and spans centuries back. Just like the baker traded with the flour mill, today there are hundreds of communities worldwide where barter is used to take cash out of the picture. Greece, for example, has built up a viable barter economy of scale since its economic collapse. In 1934, Switzerland launched WIR to keep business turning in the Great Depression. Likewise, barter is used in many smaller communities to support local business in a radically shifting digital landscape where companies like Amazon directly compete. 78 ISSUE 89

22 MILLION TRANSACTIONS AND COUNTING Bartercard is the world’s largest trade exchange that’s evolved the concept of a direct swap to a flexible credit card-style system which has surpassed 22 million transactions. Today members are trading everything from a hamburger to a multi-million development, holidays, retail products and services through a cash alternative currency to stay ahead of the curve. And because face-to-face is still among the strongest ways to build trust, Bartercard regularly hosts industry events inviting members to see what they can trade. If a small business has surplus stock or spare capacity, Bartercard can sell it or fill the extra space. It’s a platform that’s encouraging business diversity and strengthening the local economy, and supplements business on top of everyday cash transactions which can make a huge difference when you think of customer referrals. Quite often a Bartercard sale can lead to recommendations in the cash economy. Just a few of the things members have covered using Bartercard instead of cash include renovations, accommodation at destinations worldwide and real estate in exchange for welcoming customers on Bartercard. a To start trading anything from lunch to a renovation, visit bartercard.com.au or call 1300 227 837. RIDING THE WAVE OF OPPORTUNITY A Sunshine Coast development company is leading a wave of interest in the opportunities available in the new Maroochydore CBD.

The local firm Evans Long recently unveiled plans to create a premium commercial building in the new city centre, with a construction value of $18 million. It joins global infrastructure and property development giant, John Holland, which announced plans last year to develop five ‘super lots’ in the new city centre in the heart of Maroochydore.

Evans Long plans to build a five-storey office building with 4460m of commercial space.

Managing Director, Matt Evans, said the company was keen to demonstrate its support for this important new precinct in our growing region and planned to construct a building that helps set the benchmark in sustainability and smart technology. He said their proposal would provide high-quality commercial office space in a central location with outstanding facilities. With no legacy infrastructure to replace or remove on the 53-hectare greenfield site, SunCentral Maroochydore - the company responsible for overseeing design and delivery of the new city centre - is creating one of the most digitally connected CBDs in the country.

More than 90 per cent of lots in the core commercial precinct are already under negotiation or contract, with local, national and international interest received from a diverse range of sectors, including technology, health, education, government and professional services. Work is expected to begin on the first buildings in the new CBD in 2019, creating hundreds of jobs both during and post construction, which will be a terrific boost for the local economy. While great progress is being achieved, it’s still early days. The Maroochydore City Centre will continue to provide new opportunities for many years to come, as future stages of the project are rolled out and future occupants of the new CBD buildings move in. c www.maroochydore-city.com.au

DICTIONARY DEFINITION 1

An abundance of valuable possessions or money; ‘he used his considerable wealth to bribe officials’. Synonyms: affluence, prosperity, opulence, riches, means, substance, luxury, well-being, plenty, deep pockets.

DICTIONARY DEFINITION 2

A plentiful supply of a particular desirable thing; ‘the tables and maps contain a wealth of information’. Synonyms: abundance, profusion, plethora, mine, store, treasury, copiousness, plenitude, amplitude, bounty, cornucopia.

Buddha says, “Contentment is the greatest wealth of all”. Socrates says, “He is the richest who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature”.

SO, WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE TRULY WEALTHY? LET’S HAVE A LOOK AT WHAT ‘WEALTH’ MEANS TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. Magic - ‘Matters Magazine’: Wealth means opportunity, security and satisfaction.

Wealth depends on lots of things; certainly, it can be about money, but it is also about who you are as a person. It also depends on what you are interested in, and where you are at your time of life right now. It is defined differently by every person, but for me, real wealth is about freedom.

Sharon Nicholls - Driftwood Blue Floral: Wealth to me starts with ‘soul’ purpose, self-belief and emotional balance. Once you have these things, wealth is created in so many ways. Connection, friendship, opportunities, business, money, love, choice, freedom; the list goes on. Money and assets are material things and a means to buy what you want, but you could have lots of money and still not feel wealthy. Wealth is finding what drives you, doing what you are passionate about and living every single day to your highest values.

For me, it’s the freedom to do what I want to do when I want to do it, and with whom I want. It’s the freedom that comes with not stressing about money, about things, about our body, time, relationships, about anything really.

Roelie Schrijnders-Schmidt - Fit in 20: Wealth can mean a lot of things. Besides the dictionary definition of ‘a lot of money or assets of monetary value’, wealth for me personally means the ability to have a choice. Freedom to have a choice. Choice in schooling, oftentimes work, healthcare provider, what colour clothes you buy, where and how you live. And the choice in the supermarket alone shows how wealthy and lucky we are!

Lots of people do consider that being wealthy means being rich; that wealth equals money, a beautiful expensive house, a fancy car et cetera. But wealth is about so, so much more. Wealth is about so many different aspects of our lives; it can be PEACE OF MIND, IT CAN BE MONEY, HAPPINESS, HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE.

Miriam Guscott - Holistic Massage & Natural Therapies: I define wealth as how you value the gift of life and how well we look after that. A few of us suffer from impaired health from an early age by no choice whilst many take the gift of life for granted until diagnosed with a chronic disease. Without good health we are limited to what we can achieve; it is much more difficult than for a healthy person. Recognising how short life is and valuing health can increase the quality and quantity of the life we are given on this planet Thorsten Schmidt - Fit in 20: Running two busy companies, the opportunity to have some leisure time for myself or with my family, makes me feel wealthy. At the end of the day, I think that most of us would agree that HEALTH IS THE REAL WEALTH, because if you don’t have that you’re dead anyway, right? f

PAY OFF YOUR MORTGAGE –

DUPLEX SPECIALISTS WE OFFER A BUY BACK GUARANTEE

WITH PAULA HARRIS FROM VIZION GROUP

Have you ever thought about building a dual key property, living in one and renting out the other to pay off your mortgage? A dual key or duplex could be the solution to your problems. More and more young people are coming to us wanting a dual key property, so that they can live in one and rent out the other to subsidise their mortgage and get it paid off quicker.

LIVE IN ONE & RENT OUT THE OTHER TO SUBSIDISE YOUR MORTGAGE!

Right now, the very clever ones are taking advantage of the first home buyers grant of $15,000; the only stipulation is that you must live in the property for a minimum of six months.

Many people don’t realise that a dual key property is cheaper to build than a duplex; this is because the second unit is smaller, and there are no strata titling costs. And there’s still plenty of choices when it comes to configurations. In the areas where we have built to date, the smaller twobedroom units are getting a minimum of $320 per week in rent, so that’s a great head start in paying off your mortgage. Of course, there are other reasons why you might consider building a dual key, such as having elderly parents. Some of our clients find this the perfect solution when their parents wish to maintain their independence, but it would be good to have them closer to home, just in case. This might get you thinking about building a duplex; you and your family could live on one side whilst your parents live on the other side. This scenario gives you two independent homes, with your parents close enough should they need help but far enough away to keep their independence and live in a comfortable low maintenance home. ca Vizion Group QLD www.viziongroupqld.com

WANT TO PROTECT YOUR HARD-EARNED WEALTH?

LEARN HOW TO HANDLE ‘BAD’ NEWS... BY TED FITZGERALD SUNSHINE COAST NUMBERS EXPERT

Have you ever wondered why so many stories in online and print media are about tragedy, controversy, danger and threat? The media industry has an old tried and true maxim that sums it up well, ‘if it bleeds, it leads’!

So, whilst we soldier on through the many risks and trials to gain more wealth and security, it’s timely to remember that spotting bad news early can help avoid some of the many risks we face. And, because the media was traditionally seen as ‘guardians’ against wrongdoing and danger, editors and bloggers tend to focus on telling us about threats!

So, whilst we don’t necessarily LIKE or prefer bad news, there is a real difference between attention and preference. Bad news draws our attention and stimulates increased cortisol in our brain, which puts our bodies on ‘standby’ in case we must act. To be fair, too much bad news can be very detrimental, and we discount the risks implied. Remember the story about the boy who constantly cried ‘wolf’ until no one listened? We tend to store good and bad news in our memory in different ways. Bad news usually stays very clear in our memory, good news tends to become rather vague, although pleasant. Because we are primarily animals that are stimulated by visual signals, horrifying pictures or unusual illustrations have more impact than dry old text, however accurate it may be.

There’s a well-researched reason why we tend to ‘like’ bad news. We usually say we like good news when, in fact, we tend to click on bad news stories first! Why? Because nature has wired us to do so. We are passionate about spotting danger and protecting those nearest and dearest, our possessions and our wealth. We are emotionally wired to be on the lookout for potential

So, what about the role of good news? There is evidence that at a societal level, exposure to good news increases hope, mental health and works to stimulate positive pro-action rather than negative reaction. For this reason, I admire Vickie Magic and the ‘Matters Magazine’ team because they always focus on good news stories and promoting ways to increase health, wealth and happiness. The role of ‘bad’ news is a fascinating study and, given today’s 24hour digital noisy news cycle, it can be in our face daily. Want to know more? FACEBOOK LAUNCHES PRINT MAGAZINE ARTICLE BY LINDA HOFFMAN

‘Matters Magazine’ is thrilled to be the bearer of this fantastic news, lifting the print industry to the highest threshold its seen in years. Airbnb, Uber and now Facebook: Think of print as a cat with nine lives. It’s now collided with human behaviour and the freshest face on the block taking his/her turn at reinventing the status quo. Apparently, the business model and ensuing credibility of the tangible has become too strong a force for even the digital giants amongst us. Facebook is the latest to add a high-end business magazine to its bag of tricks. The soft launch in Northern Europe and the UK of GROW, a quarterly print magazine, targets business owners.

“GROW by Facebook is a business marketing program that shares thought leadership content directly with our clients through an annual event as well as print and online marketing channels,” Leila Woodington, Facebook’s head of business marketing for Northern Europe said in a statement. “We do not sell any advertising or charge for any of the events or content as this is purely intended for marketing communications purposes.” Companies creating their own news channel is a path well worn; all major airlines, GE, McKinsey and more have long capitalised on the business case for having their own magazines. According to Facebook, its publication arose from the company’s events programming. GROW’s content will also appear on its Facebook page, its blog and a ‘new digital home’ that is coming soon, according to a post on its micropage. Grow will feature a combination of interviews and business spotlights. The magazine’s tagline is ‘Grow your business. Grow your network. Grow your mind.’ e 84 ISSUE 89

We asked 50 people if their business life, love life or life in general was sick and they could simply take a pill to cure it forever, would they take the pill? And 47 people said,

“YES, THEY WOULD DEFINITELY TAKE THE PILL.”

HOWEVER, did you know that we asked the same 50 people if they 100% happy in their business life, love life or life in general and 47 said “NO, NOT REALLY”. YEP 47 OUT OF 50 PEOPLE SAID NO. THAT’S A HIGH PERCENTAGE, DON’T YOU THINK? INTERNATIONAL JEWELLERY DESIGNER SHARES HER

SECRETS TO WEALTH ‘Matters Magazine’ journalist, Vickie Magic, talks to international jewellery designer, and now Sunshine Coast local, Renee Blackwell. Renee Blackwell

Renee Blackwell has been designing and making jewellery for over 30 years. Originally from the USA, Renee made Australia home 21 years ago. She sold her beautiful jewellery pieces for 15 years at the famous Eumundi markets, as well as stocking 144 retail jewellery stores with her products. However, just two years ago, she made the biggest change to her business and her life; she changed all her sales to 100 per cent online sales and, in Renee’s words, “I have never looked back”. Renee says online sales work perfectly for her and her jewellery collections. The company ships worldwide, but the main sales focus is Australia, where she is proud to say she has a large and faithful following. Being in the same business for 30 years certainly gives Renee a level of expertise that is difficult to find elsewhere; she’s a multi-award-winning jeweller and business women. It’s rare to find someone who wears both hats so well and with equal interest. However, learning about business and learning about jewellery just lights her up. Renee recently added another string to her bow by gaining accreditation as a pearl specialist. She told us that right now she is going through a period of ‘pearl mania’; she is finding that pearls just light her up and she loves incorporating them into more of her pieces. Taking a trip back in time, Renee shares that she originally started in the jewellery world in the late 1980s, whilst living in the San Francisco Bay area of California. She worked with a business called ‘Wild Thing Wearable Art’. 86 ISSUE 89

“It really was quite wild! It was the era of Madonna and Cyndi Lauper and that sort of bling,” she said. Needless to say, things have changed considerably and progressed over the years. First up, Renee became a qualified silversmith; then she discovered vintage and antique buttons and started to incorporate these into her silver and gold designs. Trust me, her buttons are no ordinary buttons; they seem to be like treasures from a bygone era. The buttons are sourced from all over England, Paris and many other places. She is thrilled that she MUST travel to all these places to source and hand select each one! She also uses many amazing semi-precious stones for her jewellery, which are available right here in Australia. When I asked Renee to share her thoughts on ‘wealth’ she said, “Besides the obvious answer of money, the thought that comes to my mind first is wisdom. I have long held the belief that wisdom is the wealth of experience. When I have meaningful life experiences, I either deposit or withdraw from my wisdom bank. My wisdom account, much like a bank account, matures with age and I receive the benefit of ‘compound interest’ as wisdom is withdrawn from time to time and applied to life’s situations.” Renee’s clients love classy, unique jewellery. Many of her customers are collectors of her jewellery, as most of the pieces are one-ofa-kind and rare treasures. They also love GREAT service. Renee has found it’s important to make every client feel as though every single order is as special as they are - because it is! She believes that jewellery is such a personal item; a woman can purchase a

pair of earrings that become a part of her identity and personal expression for years to come. Or, if given as a gift, jewellery has incredible sentimental value. One example of how Renee helps her customers is a Facebook live session called ‘Ask Renee anything about Jewellery’. Followers can either send her questions before or during the live session. She has found this to be a great way to connect, help and inform customers and it helps her customers to connect with her personally, to put a face to the name, so to speak. I asked Renee about her role models. She said she could name quite a few but decided to highlight local porcelain potter, Shannon Garson. Renee describes Shannon as innovative, insightful and hard working. Her work is nationally and internationally recognised and collected. She is always reaching new heights within her medium (porcelain) and is not only a true artist but also a great businesswoman in her own right. Renee’s favourite place on the planet is her glorious 50-acre property on the outskirts of beautiful Maleny, right here on the Sunshine Coast. e www.reneeblackwelldesign.com

US software company Adobe has announced the end of development for ‘Business Catalyst’, a hosted content management system with thousands of users around the world. It will remove all data on ‘Business Catalyst’ (BC) servers on 26 March 2021, leaving over 300 Sunshine Coast businesses in the lurch. Digital marketing agency, The Creative Collective, says although it has been a partner of BC and designing websites on the platform since 2009, it’s been focusing more on WordPress and Shopify since 2013. This was due to the lack of development on the BC platform in more recent years. “Having been through that experience and learning a bunch of stuff, we’re now ready to help other local businesses who may also be caught out by the BC announcement,” said Yvette Adams. “We believe we’re very well positioned to do so as we understand both platforms very well.” Adams said the entire BC community was excited when Adobe acquired the system for $110 million in

August 2009 because they thought they would innovate it. “But that never happened,” she said. With a firm date now in place for Adobe to stop hosting existing sites on BC, it’s time to take action. “2021 might sound like a long time away but we are urging everyone, particularly those who built their sites some time ago (over two to three years ago), to make moving their site a priority so they can reap the benefits, such as ensuring it’s up-to-date with their current business offerings, mobile responsive and loads fast. The latter two are now major signalling factors for Google rankings,” she said. e
