Firstly, a little bit about our team. A family business, we have offices in Sydney and Noosa. The Sydney office has just been awarded the REINSW excellence award for best small agency ... and it does run in the family. David (prior Re/Max Principal) and Theodora, both multi award winners for excellence opened Garwoods Estate Agents in Noosa in 2017. The Noosa office holds the record price for a non-waterfront home in Noosa Waters at $1.5 million, a price that has remained unequalled or surpassed. We do treat our clients like we like to be treated so of course we take it all personally, it’s not just business. Experience is our point of difference, so why not experience it for yourself?

Welcome to

THE PRIDE ISSUE of ‘Matters Magazine’

On the 5th of November my beautiful mother left her physical body. She now joins dad in my heart, now and forever. Losing my dad on 15 September 2015 changed my life forever, and I already know that losing mum is going to change it again times ten. Being our PRIDE issue, I can honestly say, that I could not be PROUDER than to have been her daughter. She was the kindest, sweetest, gentlest soul you will ever lay eyes on. When you think about leaving a legacy, what greater legacy can a person leave than to know that every single person that talks of them in any conversation would say, “Elaine Exton was the kindest person I have ever met”. Seriously, how amazing is that? Being non-judgemental is almost impossible; if you have tried it for even a day you will know what I mean. But mummy was exactly that, she just NEVER spoke unkindly about anyone, she always showed compassion and love, often quoting when someone does something quite horrible that we just don’t know what’s going on for them. Seriously one of the most beautiful, amazing, wonderful, generous, loving and kindest people EVER. Mum, I am so, so grateful to have had you as a mother; you taught me so much about compassion. It’s the learnings from you that have influenced me to be the person I want to be, to live the life I want to live. I am so very, very proud of you, and so very, very proud to have learnt so many wonderful lessons from you. I never once heard you swear, (well just once, on your birthday, 16 September 2015, the day after dad died, when you said, “This is a shitty birthday”. We were all horrified as it was the only time you had ever sworn, and we all laughed, because it really was a pretty shitty birthday. I never once heard you put someone down or badmouth another human being; you were just such a beautiful human being and the world is seriously going to miss your love and light. I can’t express the pride I feel to stand here and say, “Elaine Exton was my mum”, because honestly, you make me feel so proud to be your daughter.

e I lovemoyoonu atondthback.

We are super excited to share our PRIDE FEATURE with you on page 22; it’s absolutely incredible just how much our local Sunny Coasters have to be proud about. What about you? If you thought about it right now, what’s on top of your list when you think of what makes you feel proud? For me, the number one place-getter is my MUM; like I said, she is a most wonderful lady. I am also so proud to live 30 seconds from the most beautiful beach on the planet, Buddina Beach. It just makes my heart sing to fulfil this childhood dream. I don’t take it for granted and I ensure that each and every day my bare feet touch the sand and the water; it truly makes me feel alive. So, I’m proud and so grateful for that. I am also pretty proud of becoming a journalist and then becoming a business and life coach. I always want to strive for that next level. I think no matter how much we know, no matter how much we learn, there is always something else we can learn. I can’t even begin to share with you how proud I am of my baby, this magazine, ‘MATTERS MAGAZINE’. I love this magazine at the core of my being, and I feel so full of pride each and every time I get an email, a Facebook post, a text message or someone tells me that THEY LOVE IT, or it has helped them in some way, or that they read the magazine from cover to cover. It fills my heart with joy and my soul with pride. In life, of course, I am proud of my daughter Ashleigh and son Jamie; they are the sole purpose for my being. I am so proud of who they are, and I adore the ground on which they walk. I can only hope that when I am older like my mum that my children are as proud to be my children as I am to be mum’s child. And last, but by no means least, I am so proud of my amazing husband, too. He is the most amazing, loving, caring, generous, giving and funny man I have ever met. I could not imagine my life without him in it, having him by my side fills me with PRIDE that I was able to find someone so MAGICAL, my rock, my soul mate, the absolute love of my life. So yeah, each and every day I thank my lucky stars for where I live and what I do and who I do it with. Could life actually get any better? I THINK NOT!

WHAT ARE YOU PROUD OF?

WHAT ARE YOU PROUD OF?

It’s kind of a funny story when I think back to November 2013 at the Sunshine Coast Business Excellence Awards. I had recently sprained my ankle quite badly, so I was on crutches. We were sitting towards the back of the room and I remember listening to all the winners’ speeches, thinking, “Wow some of these people are just incredible; when I grow up I want to be just like them”. It was a fabulous night and winner after winner received their accolade. It was almost the end of the evening and Magic (my husband) went out to go to the men’s room. On his return he said, “They have just set up dessert outside, I reckon we should bail and go out and grab some.” So, it was decided; we hadn’t been fortunate enough to win our category, so we made the decision to go out and grab a little sugar and beat the rush. We scurried around under our chairs to grab our things and, just as we started to stand up, we hear them call out our name. We both looked at each other and said, “Did they just call our name? What for?” We weren’t 100 per cent sure and then we heard the emcee say, “And please welcome our SUNSHINE COAST SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR WINNERS, Business Matters Magazine owners, Vickie and Dranko MAGIC.” What? OVERALL WINNERS? THE LARGEST PRIZE OF THE NIGHT? If I am honest, I was shaking I was just so excited, just so PROUD. I was in shock, DISBELIEF, I felt so humble at that moment. Did I say DISBELIEF? How could it be true? How could we possibly have won? SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR FOR THE WHOLE OF THE SUNSHINE COAST?

8 ISSUE 90

It was completely surreal, it was the most amazing, magical humbling moment you could imagine. I think back and ask myself, “What is the proudest moment of my life to date?” Up there are marrying my soulmate, Mr Magic; giving birth to my two children, Ashleigh and Jamie; buying a house at the beach; winning Outstanding Business Person of the Year a few years earlier, and winning Micro Small Business Woman of the Year, and years earlier, winning Commercial Radio Sales Person of the Year; these were definitely all in the running, of course. The personal ones are actually more important to me. The best things I have ever done in my life are give birth to two amazing souls, my children, Ashleigh Kate and Jamie Julian, marrying MAGIC, my soulmate, my rock and the love of my life, buying a house 30 seconds from the beach, I’m truly proud of these things. BUT THIS WAS THE PINNACLE OF MY BUSINESS CAREER, this was quite frankly a DAY that we will never ever forget and one that we are SO PROUD OF to this day. What it meant to us most of all was that we were on the right track; people clearly loved what we were doing, and our business model worked. It confirmed that we were getting the success formula right. It was my goal from day one to INSPIRE, EDUCATE AND CONNECT; standing on that stage on the 16 November 2013, I knew we had achieved that

KUREK ASHLEY

goal. I won’t enter those particular awards again because we couldn’t get a better result than we got that night, and I want to leave another business and another person the opportunity to feel the amount of PRIDE that I certainly felt that night and, if I am honest, since in the business realm.

Pride is something that I believe I can tap into at any moment; if ever I get down and forget how far I’ve come I simply remind myself of that night, of that win and I smile and say to myself, “That night you won Small Business of the Year 2013; you have nothing to be down about so get back up and follow your dreams”. So, think about it, what is your proudest moment? It doesn’t matter what it was / is, it simply matters that you are able to take yourself back into that moment, to step into that pride, that feeling and bring that feeling into your now, to remind yourself of how you felt and bring back that feeling of pride. When you bring that feeling back into your now it simply reminds you what you are capable of. It can also remind you that you can feel those feelings by simply making a choice to feel them. The more we think about something, the more we link the neurons in our brain to them and the more we link those the easier it is to think the thoughts. We, as humans tend to link these neurons to the negative and therefore we keep on linking back to those kinds of images and thoughts, what we don’t like, that time that someone wronged us, or something wrong happened, or how something made us feel bad. Then we think of another and another and pretty soon those feelings consume us, and we feel bad. The only way you can get good at ANYTHING is to practice repeat. Practice repeat, but remember practice makes perfect and it also makes permanent, so if you are practising focusing on what’s wrong, you get perfect at doing that, and it becomes a permanent way of being for you. So, if you want to change your feelings from thinking about and focusing on what makes you feel sad or bad to thinking about what makes you feel proud and glad then start now, start changing your focus, start catching yourself and practising focusing your attention towards what you DO WANT, WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD, WHAT YOU ARE GRATEFUL FOR AND, MOST OF ALL, WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL PROUD. I absolutely promise you that you will just get better and better at this and eventually you will rewire your brain to a new way of thinking and a new way of being; one that makes you feel good, one that makes you feel alive, and one that makes you feel PROUD. f

GROW YOUR BUSINESS by getting rid of all your good customers There’s an old sales strategy to help create good customers, which is ‘under promise and over deliver’. The problem with that is that you don’t want good customers in your business. Good customers may be good for a while, but when there’s a sale on somewhere else or a lower price they’re gone like the wind. Instead, the sales strategy that you want to adopt is, ‘overpromise and deliver way more than that’. Or a simpler way of stating that is take pride in what you do by adding value over and above what the customer expects. When you do that, you create LOYAL CUSTOMERS. Creating loyal customers will help you grow your business three-fold automatically: 1. Your customers come back 2. When they have more money to spend, they will spend more money with you 3. They tell their friends The great part about taking pride in adding value to your customer is that it doesn’t mean more work or that it costs you more. What it really is, is about creating a feeling. The power behind that is that people don’t buy your products, services and ideas. They buy how they FEEL about your products, services and ideas. So, what they’re really buying is YOU. It’s a transference of feelings and that’s one of the extra benefits of taking pride in adding value to your customers; it feels good to do that. ca www.kurekashley.com

VIZION GROUP

If you’re looking to build your property portfolio quickly,

CONSIDER BUILDING TWO AT ONCE BY VICKIE MAGIC

Have you ever considered buying an immediate cash flow positive property that has equity the second it’s finished? What exactly does that mean? Could it be possible for you? After a long time in the oil and gas / mining industry, Paula and Denis Harris decided to build themselves a duplex; they loved the idea of two at once. They enjoyed their business, but their real passion was property. After building their portfolio to a pretty healthy number of properties, a few of their friends started asking them to help them get started. They obliged, of course, and their friends said, “Wow, you guys are fantastic at this, why don’t you set up a business?”. As they say in the classics, THE REST WAS HISTORY. Paula and Denis joined forces with Tracy Drent, who was experienced in development. Tracy and Paula initially worked in the business day to day, but the three of them pooled their knowledge to create a vision for the future. They called that vision, THE VIZION GROUP. A few short years later Denis gave up his FIFO job and joined the business full-time. They find that the three of them work exceptionally well together and complement each other’s skills.

Their business, VIZION GROUP, helps their clients build a portfolio of properties in a very short space of time. They specialise in duplexes, so that means every property soon after completion becomes two. Paula explained that by 10 ISSUE 90

applying for a strata title on the properties on completion, they immediately gain an equity of around $80,000 to $150,000, depending on the area and configuration of the duplex. This then means that the client can use that equity as a deposit on their next property, so there is no need for the clients to have to save up a deposit each time to begin building their next property. So, what EXACTLY is a duplex? The true definition of a duplex is simply two dwellings that are separated by a joint fire wall. What is strata title? At completion of each duplex we apply for strata title, which means basically that they are then two separate titles, which in turn means that the properties can be sold separately if need be. This forces value into the property because they can then be valued as two separate properties and, of course, then sold as two separate properties.

Paula said, “At VIZION GROUP QLD, we DESIGN them, BUILD them, do all the NEGOTIATIONS, PROJECT MANAGE them, AND if need be we also organise PROPERTY MANAGEMENT” Paula went on to explain that they service FIVE quite different clients, who are loving this DUPLEX OPPORTUNITY. The first client is just looking to build their portfolio two at a time, where they rent out both the properties. Then there are children who are keen to live with (but not really live with) their older parents or a single parent that is on their own. So, the couple and family live in one side and the older parent or even parents live in the other.

IS IT TIME FOR A FRESH START?

This level of customer service definitely seems to be a point of difference that isn’t often found in any industry. Tracy, Paula and Denis are so proud of their reputation, but they are equally proud of the difference they get to make in their clients’ lives, helping them to become financially independent. One young man came to them when he was just 24. A FIFO worker from Perth. He wanted to maximise his disposable income. His friends were all buying cars and things, but he wanted to do something to help set himself up for this future and to take care of himself if the income dried up. After building the very first one, they strata titled it creating $150,000 equity, so he immediately used a portion of that as the deposit to build the next one. He is now 26-years-old and he owns four properties, and is about to purchase his third duplex, so that will be six properties in his portfolio in just three years. They are all positive cash flow and take care of themselves. I got excited about these real case scenarios. Tracy Drent, Paula and Denis Harris

The third scenario is where the mid to older parents live in one side and their divorced or separated son or daughter is in the other. There are first home buyers who live in one side and rent out the other in an attempt to pay off their mortgage quicker. Or just the astute home owner looking to up the ante on paying off their property, living in one and renting out the other like the first home owner. So, you can see that there is literally something for everyone, no matter what stage of life you are at. All in all, a lot of our clients are timepoor. They want someone that will do EVERYTHING from start to finish to remove the pressure of any decisions or anything that might take away their precious time. They are also looking for someone with the knowledge and experience to ENSURE that they find the RIGHT PROPERTY in the RIGHT LOCATION to ENSURE they are making MONEY from the GET-GO. After doing this interview I have to add that I personally became quite excited about the possibilities of how easy it might be to purchase a duplex and how quickly it could give me immediate equity and be cash flow positive. In fact, we have already been and had a look at one of the properties and think we may be on to a winner. What especially appealed to us was the fact that Paula said, after five years doing these they hadn’t had an unhappy client. They look after absolutely everything from start to finish and even beyond. Paula mentioned to me a client she had sold to

The next real case scenario is about an accountant from Melbourne. Paula said, “To begin with he was a little skeptical being that he was in Melbourne and we were here on the Sunshine Coast, but a client of his has referred him to us and he decided to give it a try. So, we did the first one for him and there was $140,000 in equity in it, and as soon as he could draw the equity out he did and built the second one, drew that equity out and we have just about finished the third which looks like having around $130,000 in equity. He is now telling us to hurry up and strata title it so that he can start the fourth. So that is six properties he currently has rented out, all positive geared, and it will be eight pretty soon. He is ecstatic as he didn’t see this as a possibility not very long ago”.

upskill now

This just means that you can grow a portfolio without having to save up for the deposits each time because they just keep using the equity from the previous build and often in the first instance using the equity from their own home, which they didn’t realise they could do to get the process going. Paula says that lots of people she talks to don’t realise they don’t need a cent to begin if they have equity in their home. A major point of difference is that Vizion Group sell a wholesale, not retail, duplex, so the owner is the one making the profits after strata titling, giving them the deposit on each new build.

Paula pointed out that the figures she presents to buyers are real, never even slightly ‘inflated’. Vizion Group Qld quite simply take the headache out of investing and offers unlimited, ongoing support for the life of the property. e www.viziongroupqld.com.au

I.T. MATTERS

WHAT’S THE RISK OF YOUR BUSINESS

BEING COMPLETELY ONLINE?

When I talk about your business being completely online, I am referring to having your company completely reliant on the internet for your accounting system, access to all your company files, POS systems, EFTPOS and telephone system and any other cloud-based programs your company is dependent on to operate.

This means if you have redundancy with your internet, which can be the 4G option or the additional NBN plan, you lower the risk of complete outage of your company.

Eventually the time will come in your business where you will be reliant on the internet to handle most of your company’s day-to-day activities so don’t wait, start planning now and avoid a potential high-risk situation. This can easily be implemented by your trusted IT advisor. m www.secureaccess.com.au

We would suggest two options and they are affordable when you evaluate the risk. • Install a modem router with a 4G backup plan so if the main internet line goes down, the 4G will run most of the company’s resources, except online phone systems. You can easily divert your cloud-based phone system to a mobile number until the internet is back online. • Install a firewall with an additional NBN internet provider. So, if Telstra is your main internet company, you would add another NBN plan with another provider so when the main internet goes down, it will switch over to the other provider.

FIRE UP COACHING

WHAT WILL MAKE YOU PROUD? When we coach people, we focus on helping them to gain perspective and stay present with what is possible for them. Only humans regret the past, blame in the present and worry about the future. It often takes someone else to get us to recognise and acknowledge our own strengths and potential, and get a plan down on paper so that we can track our progress. When we focus on all the areas where we are succeeding in life and take pride in our achievements, it helps us to override the brain’s natural tendency to track towards the negative. “Negative events generally have more impact than positive ones. For example, it’s easy to acquire feelings of learned helplessness from a few failures,

but hard to undo those feelings, even with many successes (Seligman 2006).” Buddha’s Brain, Hanson & Mendius 2009.

We accelerate our achievement of goals when we not only write them down but start visualising achieving them. At a recent conference of 300 people to which I was presenting, I asked who positively visualised themselves on a regular basis. Virtually no-one raised their hand. What a great opportunity it was to educate them all to the power of seeing and believing! This time of the year is a great time to take time out and imagine what you want for 2019.

WHAT WILL MAKE YOU PROUD? HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT ACHIEVING THAT? If you would like a free copy of a plan to make 2019 your best year yet, head to our website. ca

LEGAL MATTERS

SEPARATION MISTAKES

YOU WON’T SEE COMING Christmas can be one of the most stressful times for families. Parties think they will stay together for the sake of the children for Christmas and until they return to school. It should therefore not shock you that January is historically the busiest time of the year for Family Law Solicitors. If you or someone you know is experiencing separation, these are some common mistakes to avoid: 1. Trying to embark on a war by taking an adversarial approach as opposed to looking at alternative dispute resolution including mediation, arbitration and collaborative law It is important to aim to resolve your matter by staying out of the Court room. You do not need to hire a solicitor to embark on a war to commence Court proceedings immediately. It is very common for family law clients to resolve their matter out of Court through mediation, arbitration and collaborative law, which saves money, time and heartache. Settling your matter through alternative dispute resolution is confidential and can be documented through a legally binding document, whether that be Consent Orders or a Binding Financial Agreement. 2. Reaching an agreement and not getting the agreement formally documented Often people can reach an agreement without the assistance of a solicitor and as such the agreement is never formally documented. Under the Family Law Act, to terminate financial affairs between parties there needs to be a Binding Financial Agreement or Consent Orders. If one of these documents is not executed between the parties then the financial relationship of the parties has not been terminated. If the financial relationship is not terminated, then a former spouse can bring an application against the other,

which will include all assets as at that date and not the date of separation. If one party has gone on to acquire further assets with a new partner, such as a new marital home, received an inheritance or won the lotto, then this can be problematic as these assets can come into the asset pool. 3. Making financial commitments before finalising your agreement property affairs It is a common saying, ‘don’t count your chickens before they hatch’. It is important to take a step back and process the separation before rushing in to purchase a new property, start a business or acquire further assets. This can put you in a vulnerable position and compromise your financial settlement. 4. Think before you react in sending messages or speaking to the children Sending text messages or emails before you have time to process your frustration and emotions can cause damage and later be used in the Family Court as evidence if required. Before you send the message or vent your frustration, put the phone down and walk away. Do not involve the children in your disputes with the other parent. This again can have a negative impact on your matter and cause damage. 5. Not getting the support you need Separation from your partner is a major loss which is said to be behind the loss of a child. It is important you take care of yourself. There are several people who can help you through divorce from professionals to family and friends. Consult your family doctor and ask for a referral to a therapist who can help you understand the grief process. It is important to remember to be kind to yourself and remember no matter how hard this period may be, you will get through this difficult time. This is an opportunity for you to create new adventures, dreams and move forward

FIRST TIME BUYERS TIPS

CHOOSE YOUR OWN HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Before you decide to purchase your first property there are several things to consider, including current personal circumstances and financial status. Here are two areas that need to be considered in today’s lending environment.

Five reasons you should get out there and enjoy the ocean on a jet ski today!

BUDGET AND CASHFLOW: Lenders are now looking more closely at how you spend your money, so set a budget and stick to it. Being able to show a record of good saving habits will aid in getting your loan approved.

2. FISHING JUST GOT CONVENIENT! Fishing from your jet ski allows easy access to prime fishing locations.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS: Work on how much you can afford, rather than how much you can borrow. Consider buying something smaller so you can pay off your debt faster, rather than stretching your budget and getting into trouble down the track. A home loan that you can afford comfortably now and in the future is important. Extra cash each pay cycle could assist with renovations, extra repayments, or the option to have a family holiday and enjoy your life, which makes sense for both your wallet and your mental wellbeing. 1. FAMILY FUN. The ocean becomes a giant playground for these high-performance personal watercrafts; the diversity of activities makes it a game-changer for all age groups!

3. FITNESS. Cardio work-outs, ab-toning, balance and improved coordination are just some of the benefits of jet skiing. 4. STRESS RELIEF. Splashing in the water is a stress reliever in itself! Adding a jet ski requires your focus to be on operating the craft, allowing your worries to essentially wash away! 5. ECONOMICAL. Owning a jet ski is more economical than a boat, with less ongoing costs. You can own a jet ski from just $5 a day*! Whether you want to get your heart racing with adrenalin, spend time with family, fish or enjoy island adventures, the team at iJetski will steer you in the right direction. DO YOU LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND FEEL PROUD OF WHAT YOU SEE?

CASUAL OR PERMANENT? NEW RULES MAY APPLY

If the answer is ‘yes’, that’s fantastic, but so many people don’t.

Many small and medium-sized employers believe casual staff are easier to hire, fire and manage, and lean towards this form of employment.

We stay on track for a while, we exercise and eat well, then almost without warning, that sense of pride is lost, and we don’t like what we see. What went wrong? What can you do to feel great again? You can decide to do something different! Now is the time for change. If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got. Take on an accountability coach, someone to walk beside you every step of the way to guide you and encourage you on this journey towards a happier healthier you. If you are ready to feel that PRIDE that you feel when you are at your best, maybe it’s time to put a personal trainer to the test. Moxy will get you there. Moxy Fitness & Life FB facebook.com/moxyfitnesslife/ Mob Ph 0419 703 898 Email moxyfitnessnlife@gmail.com Web www.moxyfitnesslife.com.au

In a recent decision by the Fair Work Commission, however, 85 awards have been amended to include casual conversion clauses - or the right for certain casual staff (those employed on a regular and systematic basis) to formally request their employment status be changed to permanent. Additionally, the Federal Court recently found that an employee was not engaged as a casual and was entitled to leave accrued over the term of his employment, even though he had received a 25 per cent casual loading. The Court confirmed that determining whether or not an employee is a casual will come down to the particular facts of each case. Not exactly clear, is it? For employers with casual employees, it is advisable to seek advice on the implications of these changes. FEAR: BREAK THE ILLUSION Self-esteem is very important. I know it’s an old chestnut, and you’re probably thinking ‘not another guru telling me what to think’, but there have been so many occasions where I have taken a group of participants on training, educational or leadership programs and the first words to come out of their mouth are: “I can’t do this”! As earthly beings we all have a vast array of fears and insecurities to face and they can be daunting. I’m here to tell you that, from the dozens of programs I’ve organised, people will usually be massively relieved that their illusion of fear is vastly different to the reality. I teach them it’s a slow process and its progress. And it needs to be facilitated in the right way, with experienced and supportive trainers willing to help you overcome those massively limiting beliefs. I firmly believe that knowing your numbers is the number one way to grow a business and keep your dream alive. When you started your business, you set out to change the world with your product or service and you embarked upon the adventure of being a business owner. I bet you have encountered a few challenges and surprises along the way. Maybe, those hiccups put your dream on the slow track and you’ve lost a little of your drive. It is one thing to have a dream, it is another to have a plan that supports that dream and allows it to flourish. The truth is, business success depends on support and knowing your numbers. If you’re not good at reading numbers, have someone take a look over them for you. Perhaps your accountant or business consultant or coach. Put a new perspective on your business. LGSM ACCOUNTABILITY TRANSFORMATION SERVICES

with Sally Gatt (Matterson) and Lucas Gatt

LOSE BELLY FAT BY CONTROLLING THIS HORMONE One of the most important hormones to get a handle on, if your training objective is losing belly fat, is insulin. This hormone’s role is to transport energy from carbohydrates in the form of glucose to our muscles. Too much insulin in the body from too many high insulin response carbohydrates causes the body to store fat. After a while this can lead to a hormone imbalance called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance means insulin will stop doing its job and your ability to metabolise carbs for energy will decrease dramatically. In short, it will become harder and harder to lose fat if we have produced too much insulin over an extended period. Promote insulin sensitivity (the opposite of insulin resistance) by choosing the right carbohydrates, starting a strength training program and increasing good fats in your diet such as nuts and seeds. Once you start to control insulin production in the body you can then start to tackle those stubborn areas of belly fat. ATO GRINCH: REWARDING TEAM & CUSTOMERS

PROUD LOCAL MANUFACTURERS

‘Tis the season for gifts to be exchanged, parties to be hosted, wining, dining, trimmings and bar tabs aplenty; a time to celebrate your team and your customers. But beware the ATO grinch!

At Harlequin Blinds and Security, we’re proud of being able to manufacture and supply locally made products from our factory right here on the Sunshine Coast. Looking after the locals, their homes and businesses, from our factory, means Harlequin is always there when required.

When it comes to employees, parties and gifts that are less than $300 including GST in value will NOT be subject to Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT). However, you cannot claim a tax deduction or a GST credit. When it comes to clients, parties and gifts won’t be subject to FBT. However, if they are entertainment in nature (dinner, movie vouchers and so on), you cannot claim a tax deduction or a GST credit. So, how can you reward your customers in a tax-effective way? The ATO generally accepts that ‘non-entertainment’ gifts to your customers, such as wine, flowers and pens, will be tax deductible. Another win-win idea is to make a donation on behalf of your customers. It is tax deductible and celebrates the spirit of giving at this time of the year. Best wishes to you and your team this festive season. Brilliance for Business Ph 07 5437 7624 Email melissa@brillianceforbusiness.com.au

MONEY MATTERS

BE THE CHANGE - Create A Better Financial Outcome The Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry was established on 14 December 2017 and the final report is due early next year. The Commission’s work has uncovered extensive misconduct by financial services.

HERE ARE THREE TAKE-OUTS SO FAR:

1. There’s a culture of greed at the heart of our institutional financial system 2. There’s no tough cop on the beat 3. There’s going to be some changes WHY DID IT HAPPEN?

Too often, the answer seems to be greed - the pursuit of short-term profit by the institutions at the expense of basic standards of honesty. The issues and culture in the sector were cultivated over a long period of time; they were all on the same corporate wheel, peddling vigorously because they could and got away with it. • Selling became their focus of attention, and too often it became the sole focus of attention • Products and services multiplied as Banks searched for their ‘share of the customer’s wallet’ • From the executive suite to the front line, staff were measured and rewarded by reference to profit and sales

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO ABOUT IT?

The financial Institutions are the backbone of our national financial sector and one of the largest contributors to the national economy. This means none of us want it to fail; economically the flow-on effects would be nearcatastrophic. But as consumers, we CAN help create change, we CAN have a positive impact on the sector. • Be proactive and seek out local financial service providers where integrity and ethics are integral to their place in the community. They are more likely to have their client’s best interest at heart. • Where possible, give preference to independently positioned service providers BY DOING THIS, YOU CAN TAKE PRIDE IN KNOWING THAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED TWO THINGS:

1. You have actively sought out a better solution for yourself AND 2. You have helped bring about and sculpt change that is well overdue. www.archfp.com.au

• When misconduct was revealed, it either went unpunished or the consequences did not reflect the degree of seriousness WHAT CAN BE DONE TO PREVENT THE CONDUCT HAPPENING AGAIN?

It’s clear that personal and institutional pursuit of profit has led banks to break the law and exploit their loyal customers. Having been exposed, Australia’s biggest institutions are now trying to ‘clean house’ ahead of the final report. • We have seen a range of announcements including new programs for refunds to and remediation for consumers • The abandonment of products or practices • The sale of whole divisions of financial business divisions • New and more regulations, changes in industry structure and industry remuneration

The law already requires entities to ‘do all things necessary to ensure’ that the services they are licensed to provide are provided ‘efficiently, honestly and fairly’. So tighter laws may not be the answer, more resources for the regulators and fines big enough to act as a deterrent may help.

SUCCESSFUL IN YOUR LIFE The Law of Attraction states that like attracts like; meaning we get more of who we are! So, if success is your goal, then it will help to feel successful to attract success.

5) Become as generous to the world as you would have the world be with you. Don’t stop the flow of abundant energy by hoarding your abundance and success; keep it moving. Use your success and abundance in the service of others. If you think it’s limited, it will begin to appear that way in your life. We become what we think!

HERE ARE SIX WAYS TO FEEL SUCCESSFUL:

6) Develop an attitude of gratitude for all that is good in your life. Be thankful and filled with appreciation for all the small successes you’ve had in your life. I like to keep a daily journal, so I can write each day the good things that happened for which I’m grateful; even tiny things, like the lilac petals of the Jacaranda tree showering my car like wedding confetti! I write about everything that makes me feel good and lets me know I’ve had another successful day! Be grateful even if what you desire hasn’t happened yet. The energy and thoughts that create success and abundance are within you.

1) See the world as an abundant place. When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. Become receptive to a world that provides, rather than one that restricts. You’ll see a world that wants you to be successful and abundant rather than one that conspires against you. 2) Stay in an attitude of allowing. Allowing means in harmony and alignment with what you desire. An attitude of allowing means you ignore efforts by others (or the voice in your head) to dissuade you. When you are in an attitude of allowing, all resistance in the form of negativity or doubt is replaced with simply knowing you will achieve your goals. Picture the abundance and success you want as already yours and don’t let anything compromise that belief. 3) Initiate actions that support your feelings of success and abundance. The key word is ‘actions’. Act on those passionate emotions as if abundance and success were already here. Speak to strangers with passion in your voice. Answer the telephone in an inspired way. Do a job interview from a place of confidence and joy. Read the books that mysteriously show up and pay close attention to conversations that seem to indicate your being called to something new.

SUCCESS MATTERS

STEPS TO FEELING

So many great writers and educators remind us constantly that we are what we think; we become what we think about. Everything we are tomorrow is a result of our thoughts today. Change your tomorrow to the one you want to have today. m www.setforsuccess.com.au

4) Remember that your success and abundance will benefit others and that no-one lacks abundance because you’ve opted for it. Through your success the more you’ll have to share with others.

PROUD RESIDENTS of the beautiful

SUNSHINE COAST 22 ISSUE 90

The Sunshine Coast is quite possibly the best place to live on the planet. HOW PROUD ARE YOU ABOUT WHERE YOU LIVE?

Over the next few pages we will share some questions and answers with some local business owners about what fulfils them.

PRIDE FEATURE

LOVE AND FULFILLMENT

INSPIRE JEWELLER’S SPARKING SUCCESS To Hold & To Have may have won numerous awards, but it’s owners Shiree Hobson (right) and Jo Saxelby’s (left) love of creating custom-designed hand-made pieces for their customers’ special moments that gives them the greatest satisfaction. Jo explains:

What is your personal definition of the word pride? We prefer the word ‘thankful’. Shiree and I come from humble, working-class backgrounds and recognise that many people have contributed to our success. We’re thankful for our customers, our staff and the work they do. At a recent meeting we handed out a postcard saying, ‘Stay humble, work hard, be kind’, and that sums up our business ethos.

What is something you are really proud of? We’ve won Jewellers Association of Australia awards in 2014 and 2017, in the bride-to-be and precious metals categories, and were invited to Hong Kong for world titles in 2014 and for 2019. We won best small jewellery retailer in Australia in 2015 and are currently finalists in the Sunshine Coast Business Awards. The awards are exciting, but we’re most fulfilled by making and restoring beautiful jewellery. For example, we recently had a mother and daughter in store. It turned out the 95-year-old mother was choosing a Christmas gift – possibly the last she would give – for her daughter. It was a precious moment; she wanted to buy a present that her daughter would remember her by. We have moments like that fairly regularly, where you know a piece of jewellery is much more than a decoration – it’s a signifier of so much emotion.

What are the top three factors that have helped contribute to the success of your business? Number one would be authenticity. Shiree and I are very real with each other and with our customers. We do business the way that we do life. Running a business is hard enough but trying

to do something that isn't natural to you is an uphill battle. The second one is working hard. We work exceedingly long hours and we love every minute. The third would be doing what you love. Shiree and I love what we do and love doing it in a way that communicates who we are.

Who is your greatest inspiration and why? There are two. The first is my parents. I grew up on a farm in Palmwoods, and my parents not only worked hard, they were very service-oriented. For example, we always had people in need that my parents had taken in living in my home. My parents are very unassuming and non-judgemental. The other one is my daughter Ella. She’s 13, gorgeous and incredibly intelligent. I home-school her in the shop and she does all our Xero processing as well as her school work. She’s very artistic and scientific and a massive inspiration to me.

What is your point of difference in the market? Our main point of difference is specialising in customdesigned hand-made jewellery. You can look through a glass window and watch the pieces being made onsite. Another difference is our level of personalised service. We have a dining room table where you sit with us and have a cup of tea. We’ll listen to your heart’s desires and give you advice and a technical opinion, and work with you to meet your needs, timeline and budget. No piece of jewellery leaves our store unless you’re 100 per cent happy with it.

Is there anything else you would like to share? To Hold & To Have values love. Love is fundamental to all relationships – with yourself, others and the environment. That doesn’t make us weak – love fights for what matters, it guards and makes sacrifices. This governs our work ethic and is reflected in our commitment to our customers.

What is your favourite beach on the Coast? Mudjimba is probably my favourite. Every Sunday morning, I head to a beach and photograph the sunrise. It's how I finish my week and start my week. f www.toholdandtohave.com.au www.mattersmagazine.com.au 23

PRIDE FEATURE

PROUD RESIDENTS OF THE BEAUTIFUL SUNSHINE COAST

KENDAL MORTON IS JUST

BEAMING WITH PRIDE What is your personal definition of the word pride? Pride is reflecting on what our team has achieved, not just meeting our goals but exceeding them! It is a feeling of contentment, fulfillment and gratitude where you set out to do something and didn’t stop despite all the challenges and long hours.

What is something you are proud of? I am so proud of the entire Home Care Assistance team. The staff in the office are fabulous and dedicated to our mission and values. The carers are so inspirational and blow me away with their ideas and commitment to their clients. I would love to think that I could have carers like them if I needed it.

What are the top three factors that have helped attribute to your business success? Hard work, authenticity and positivity. Our clients know that we are transparent, honest and approachable and this mentality means that clients are retaining choice and control over their lives. We have a big focus on quality of life and we will bend over backwards to make sure that relationships are equal, positive and ultimately leading to personal happiness and goal setting. This means our clients are supported to live the life they want as they age.

Who is your greatest inspiration and why? My children are my inspiration, Coty, Rafe, JJ and Tula. They keep everything in perspective and make life fun and funny! Kids have a way of pointing out what is truly important without over complicating matters.

What is your point of difference in the market? We are so customer service focused in our approach to providing services. We are so lucky to have so many wonderful people that have chosen to have us as a service provider and we want to know their story and their values. We run 24/7 and offer the flexibility to meet their needs. We are totally dedicated and passionate about the issues this industry is facing.

24 ISSUE 90

What is your favourite beach on the Coast? Kings Beach is absolutely spectacular and has a great vibe for just hanging out with the kids. Having said that, there are so many to choose from and Currimundi Lake is pretty special, too.

More about Home Care Assistance Home Care Assistance continues to grow and make a difference to the lives of others. It is a highly competitive industry and we encourage everyone to pay attention to the issues the Aged Care Sector is facing, as it does affect us all, if we are lucky enough to make it to this age. f www.homecareassistancesunshinecoast.com.au

VICKI STEWART

OF STEWART PROPERTY

What is your personal definition of the word pride? We have to be VERY careful not to make pride all about ourselves. We can be proud of our achievements and knowing that we are good and worthy people, but never forget that without the love and support of others, we would not achieve a lot of what does get done. All too often we take pride in others’ achievements, and not our own, and this is because we may have helped them reach their goals by mentoring or general support. But it was they who put the hard work in and by doing so, were able to reach their heights. My personal definition is that if we can help others achieve their goals, that is something to be proud of.

What is something you are really proud of? I am most proud that through hard work, dedication and perseverance, we have built a solid and successful agency, which has a reputation of honesty and integrity, without ever losing our moral standards and commitment to our clients, and I am over the moon proud of my team – the secret of success is to surround yourself with the best people, and that l have done.

What are the top three factors that have helped contribute to your business success? 1. Knowledge and experience in our industry and understanding the local real estate market, and never forgetting who we work for. 2. Surrounding myself with the best of the best, the most professional team on the Coast! Without our current team and our past team members, we would not have been able to achieve our goals and keep our good reputation. 3. Continuous team training and implementation of the most up-to-date information technology has helped us to be able to provide the best service to our sellers, buyers, landlords and tenants.

Who is your greatest inspiration and why? That is a hard one. My children (who are all grown men now) and family continue to inspire me daily. But a few mentors, not in the least David Crerar, who I have had the pleasure of working with over the past 28 years. He has been a great supporter of the team. His extensive experience and love of our industry, as well as the Sunshine Coast, has inspired me to build the best team and the business we have today. I am also inspired daily by the people I am blessed to work with - the admin team, the property management team and the sales team - they are the best of the best.

What is your point of difference in the market? In our industry it is important to build long-term relationships, and we do so with all of our clients. Through transparency and communication, we show respect for the enormous trust and responsibility placed on us by our sellers and landlords. When you list your property with Stewart Property, you list it with the whole team. We are extremely dedicated to acting in the best interest of all our clients, and never forget who we work for. Accountability and respect are important to us. As a boutique agency, we are able to adapt; we are not locked into a set system, which in many cases does not work for a particular vendor, so maintaining our independence is crucial to us.

What is your favourite beach on the Coast? You can’t beat my local beach at Mooloolaba. Ideal for the whole family. The rock pools are fantastic for the smaller kids to play in and as they grow, they can surf further down. And the Spit is fantastic for older and younger swimmers alike. It’s a special place. f www.stewartproperty.com.au

ST ANDREW’S ANGLICAN COLLEGE

WITH REVEREND CHRIS IVEY What is your personal definition of the word pride? Recognising that something a person is involved in has met or exceeded expectations, and that sense of ‘feeling good’ because this has happened.

What is something you are really proud of? My four children. There are times when they drive my wife and I to distraction, but I believe they are people of good character and integrity. I also enjoy spending time with them!

Who is your greatest inspiration and why? I have many people who inspire me in different areas of my life. However, my Christian faith means that the person of Jesus inspires me. Jesus always had

the needs of others at the fore. He demonstrated true humility in all he did. He inspired others to do extraordinary things. He spoke with love and authority. He managed to change the world after only three years!

What is your point of difference in the market? St Andrew’s aim is to do what we say we do in our promotion for every student, not just a select few to showcase. We try to value each individual student for their strengths and achievements, with a balanced approach of excellence to every aspect of education including academics, sport, creative/performing arts and the development of character both in service learning and spirituality. We aim for students to develop their own intrinsic motivation toward their learning and pursue mastery rather than a grade or an award. We can do this because we seek to value one of the most important resources of all: our staff. They enable us to pursue our strong focus on the positive relationship with students, which allows the students to achieve their personal best. It’s a positive culture, and we call it ‘the St Andrew’s way’. Our other point of difference is our extensive opportunities for experiences and learning outside the classroom. These are offered with the goal of being available to each and every student. Each opportunity doesn’t aim for the goal of success or for winning but uses the experience to build character strengths and lessons for life.

Is there anything else you would like to share? There is no disadvantage in choosing a regional education. We have many students come to us from large top-rated independent city schools and their reflection is frequently that their children have been offered more opportunities and an exceptional education with dedicated teachers and excellent facilities. Plus, the bonus of living here on f the Sunshine Coast with our wonderful lifestyle!

SUNCOAST HR KATE BROWN & MANDY WARD

What is your personal definition of the word ‘pride’? I believe that the definition of the word ‘pride’ is to be able to put your hand on your heart and know that you’ve put in your very best effort.

What is something you are really proud of? Here at Suncoast HR, we’re proud of what we are building together. We are also very proud of our excellent team, a wonderful group of dedicated people with diverse personalities and capabilities. HR is such a broad industry and we are lucky to have some great specialists right across the field.

What are the top three factors that have helped contribute to your business success? Firstly, our husbands and families, who have been very supportive of our business. Kate’s husband, Josh, runs his own business. ‘Small Business Support’, and he helps us with all our marketing. Mandy’s husband is often called upon for tech support.

The second factor must be the amazing support we receive from our team, whilst the third is our approach to working with our clients. We believe that working inside our clients’ businesses, alongside their own teams, allows us to really understand their business and provide them with the best solutions around planning, systems, processes, compliance, performance management, team building and leadership programs

What is your point of difference in the market? Our point of difference is our flexibility. We can work with all types of businesses, from small to large, and we offer bespoke packages that range from phone support through to full-time support within a client’s business.

What is your favourite beach on the Coast? That’s difficult because they’re all so beautiful! The walk from Sunshine Beach through Noosa National Park and along the coastal trail to Noosa is probably the favourite. f suncoasthr.com.au

HELP YOU BE FINANCIALLY FREE? At Vizion, we’re proud to be a part of many personal journeys, helping people achieve freedom through property portfolios.

Casey and Paul from Perth, Western Australia, built two duplexes with us after considering how they could add to their investment portfolio. With prices rising throughout NSW and elsewhere, they decided on the Sunshine Coast for their two properties. Using their savings for the deposit on their first duplex, they then used the equity they gained from the first to finance the second - now, they’re even looking at building a third duplex.

Trudi and Kristopher from Melbourne already had equity from their home and used it to put down the deposit on the property for their duplex in Burnside, Sunshine Coast, in 2017. They used the equity they gained from their own duplex to help their daughter and her husband with a deposit to build a duplex of their own. We love seeing how Vizion is helping clients gain a foothold in the property market and, in turn, helping their own families succeed. We are proud to be helping that happen for so many people.

BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION MATTERS

LOOK AT YOU,

READING A MAGAZINE INSTEAD OF SCROLLING AWAY ON YOUR PHONE! Congratulations on finding a less wasteful way to pass your time. Next thing you know you’ll be reading ‘War and Peace.’ Sadly though, most people aren’t like you. Gone are the days of the comically large newspaper that falls apart as you open it. Look around you; people hunched over screens. I must admit I smile whenever I see someone walking around with a book, so rare and rewarding is the sight. But with change comes opportunity. Let’s be honest, you can’t run a successful business in the modern world without maintaining an online presence. Developing your online advertising spin is difficult. With opportunity comes competition, and the internet-going public is fickle. Your online presence is vital. But how do you maintain it? There are a few things you need to keep in mind. The first thing is your website. Web design is vital to drawing in new clients. Ever seen what Facebook or Amazon looked like when they were first founded? It wasn’t pretty. Fashion changes. You don’t still have that perm or mullet anymore; at least, I really hope not! You need to keep your website up-to-date. Is it optimised for phones and tablets? Does it run smoothly and load fast enough? Does it look nice and read easily? An outdated website

could be costing your business big time. Web security is also vital. You need to ensure your site stays up-to-date or web browsers might think it hosts malware and block access. Of course, none of that matters if no-one can find your website. Ever Googled yourself, only to see 12 people with your name who’ve done way cooler things with their lives? It sucks, doesn’t it? Odds are the same thing is happening to your business. SEO ensures you shoot to the first page of Google and stay there. No-one goes three pages deep on Google, except desperate uni students the night an assignment is due (yes, I’m speaking from experience). Improving your SEO is the easiest way to massively increase your web traffic and give your profits a shot in the arm. Beyond that, it’s important to keep yourself in front of people. Social media is an excellent way to put yourself where people can see you without paying for ridiculous billboards or lame magazine adverts... except for this one. This one is awesome! But social media isn’t as easy as posting a selfie with your dog or uploading an outdated meme. Trust me, meme culture moves faster than any marketing team. You need to know when to post and how often to post. Too early or too late and you’ll miss your target audience’s peak web traffic. Post too often and people will unfollow. Post too little and people will forget you. It’s a science. m www.englanderdavis.com

WITH AINSLEY COOMBER FROM AUSSIE TIME SHEETS

ADVANCE QUEENSLAND is helping to drive the exponential growth of the Sunshine Coast’s Aussie Time Sheets. Through the Ignite Ideas Fund, Aussie Time Sheets has fast-tracked an emerging innovation which will help small businesses compete both nationally and globally and employ more people. At its inception six years ago, ATS was based in David Azzopardi’s family garage, where he and his wife brought to life their venture with countless hours of hard work and determination. The business now supports 11 staff members at a dedicated office in Pacific Paradise. “We are proud to announce we have been awarded an Ignite Ideas grant to help us develop and launch our new enterprise level of time and attendance software,” David said. “We had a vision of this software product being developed in five years’ time; however, the financial support from the Queensland

Government has enabled us to fast track this project. “Without the support of Advance Queensland, we may never have had the opportunity to lead our industry in revolutionising our timesheet solution.” The introduction of the Aussie Time Sheets Workforce TNA innovation is projected to increase software sales with the Ignite Ideas funding supporting the business in its software development. “As we launch nationally and internationally, increasing our customer base, we will need additional staff in all areas of our business. This growth will include administrative, sales and IT professionals,” David said. The success of this project will create a need for further expansion; however, ATS will continue to be based in regional Queensland. “Our goal is to offer businesses a seamless experience that saves them time and money and will help in their success,” David said. “Commercialisation of this product will raise the profile of Queensland as a destination for innovation.” ca www.aussietimesheets.com.au

TIME IS MONEY

CLOCKING IN ON INNOVATION

EDUCATION MATTERS

HOW OUR PRIDE MIRRORS OUR VALUE SYSTEM

As parents of four children with different personalities and abilities, my wife and I are exceedingly proud of each one individually as we raise them towards adulthood. I also experience pride in my workplace when I complete a project or see people learn and grow. It’s a great feeling!

to highlight and praise, the actions that we choose to accept and celebrate (or ignore and therefore devalue) continue to build into the character of our children and into broader society. Recently, an anti-violence advertising campaign used images of a young boy and his negative actions towards his sister as a reminder that the actions accepted from day-to-day become embedded as normal and acceptable. I am not proud of that aspect of our nation.

However, as I reflect on why I am proud, I realise it says more about my values than what the children have achieved or the actual project at work. When considering the concept of pride, it’s easy to say what we are proud of, like children or work, but how is our pride influenced by our own values?

Our children need to know we are proud of them; they must know that we value and love them. We all gain satisfaction and a sense of fulfillment when we work, either in paid employment or on a task that we achieve. These things build self-regard, dignity and respect. Our expressions of pride are affirming the values that we hold both for ourselves and our children. My values are passion and honesty, resilience and optimism, humility and integrity. These words and actions should be reflected both in my work and for my children.

For me, I am proud when my children display community spirit or when I see them overcome a problem. I am proud when they have a helpful attitude towards others, when they choose kindness and when they really persist at something. These are important values to me. I know people who are proud of winning and this speaks to their values. However, for me, being proud of winning is just one part of a broader picture including the others who competed, the assistance needed along the way, or the effort it took to achieve that success. I also hear stories of people who are proud of actions that I find challenging, like getting away with speeding or taking a ‘sickie’. As a nation, we take pride in winning sporting events because it reflects the values we hold as a nation. Yet I don’t see us being proud of our freedom, our democracy or our justice system. Are we proud of our police service which keeps us safe, our educational opportunities with great schools or our health system with access for all? Maybe we take these for granted or don’t value them. When raising our children, it’s important to remember they observe and learn what we are proud of. What we choose

Casual employment means that an employee is paid a ‘loaded’ rate for the work performed and there is no guarantee of hours. Numerous employees are happy to be on a consistent roster and paid the loaded rate, knowing they will not get entitlements. However, this could all change following the outcome of the Federal Court case ‘WorkPac v Skene’. Mr Skene was employed as a casual truck driver on a mine site through a labour-hire company. He claimed he was a permanent full-time employee, as he was on a consistent roster that was similar to that of a full-time employee. Therefore, he said, he was entitled to annual leave entitlements and payment in lieu once the employment ended. The Federal Court ruled in favour of Mr Skene. Fair Work explains that casuals: • Have no guaranteed hours of work

Two factors will now affect any casual worker:

1. The above-outlined case between WorkPac v Skene could open a can of worms (if the appeal is unsuccessful) and be extremely costly for any other employer. The Fair Work Act needs to be updated to state that if an employee is getting a loaded rate of pay and is employed for an extended period of regular time, they cannot ‘double dip’ and say they are owed entitlements such as annual leave. Casual employees are a higher cost to an employer because of the loaded pay rates and not only are the gross wages higher but the super, WorkCover and payroll tax costs increase. 2. From 1 October 2018, any casual employee who has been engaged on a regular roster and hours for a minimum of 12 months can request to go part or full-time. An employer can only refuse if they have reasonable grounds. The casual rate will drop to the full-time pay rate, but entitlements will start to accrue for sick/annual leave. Employers need to take a closer look at their workforce and determine if is beneficial to have a casual workforce and the reasons why their employees are casual, as it may prove too costly in the future. m www.imperiumcs.com.au

• Usually work irregular hours • Don’t get paid sick or annual leave • Can end employment without giving notice • Can get a higher rate of pay than full-time employees to counteract the lack of entitlements • Can be known as a long-term casual when they have worked for an employee for more than 12 months and there is a mutual agreement on the basis of the employment

THE PRIDE THAT COMES FROM ACHIEVEMENT Coaching as a career is so rewarding because it is such an enabler for change for people. As human beings we all experience the disappointment of failure at different points in our life and it is critical to be able to manage our inner critic in these times. A strong internal negative voice can become a very debilitating trigger for shame and self-blame. If we listen to that voice it will have an enormous impact on our self-esteem and resilience. We can start to worry about failing again and rather than face our fears of failure, choose to stay in our comfort zones. Success in life requires us to override our anxieties and keep focused on learning. One of the first principals you learn if you study Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback. We have to consciously and consistently override feelings of doubt and anxiety and accept them as normal functions of the brain to help us in survival. There is a great acronym for fear. FEAR - False Expectations Appearing Real. It is incredibly useful to recognise that if we live based on our fears, we limit ourselves. When we understand as a coach how to liberate people from their fears, we can watch them glow with pride as they achieve things that previously they did not think possible. One of my recent

sessions with a client was to address her phobia of heights which meant that when her team relocated offices from the ground floor to the 18th floor, she would not sit with them. Her manager and team were unbelievably supportive in their offers to always accompany her in the lift but nothing would shift her from the ground floor. After only two sessions we rode the lift to her new offices and walked in with her acknowledging that she was not totally comfortable, but she did it! It was wonderful for her to be so warmly received by her team, who I could see were just so happy that someone had the skill to unpack her phobia. When we work with people to overcome fear we have to shift the part of the brain they are constantly accessing. My client’s pattern of tracking to the negative had become so ingrained that accessing and visualising the possibilities for her future seemed impossible. This is where the power of being able to shift someone from emotional processing to visual processing can be so profound. Every time my client went back into the story of the fear, I asked her to

close her eyes, look up and remember a time when she had been confident and free of fear. We all need to build on our neural circuitry if we are going to expand our reality. The nature of how our brain works means that we can’t notice what is creating our reality. So much is going on at an unconscious level and until we start to understand that the brain directs the mind, even trying to practise mindfulness may seem frustrating. My client obviously was incredibly self-conscious of the fact that meetings had to be managed around her inability to go upstairs, but did not know how to create the change. That is the frustrating thing about fear. We may know it is totally irrational but that has no impact at all on creating change. When we understand that the brain keeps us safe by storing memories of what hasn’t worked in the past, what caused us pain and how we suffered, we can start to employ different strategies. We need to bring to our attention the ‘default networks’ and start deconstructing and reconstructing the scaffolding of our mind. Changes in the parts of the brain we access lead directly to changing the way the mind creates meaning. “Your brain is like Velcro for negative experiences and Teflon for positive ones - even though most of your experiences are probably neutral or positive... It typically takes about five positive interactions to overcome the effects of a single negative one (Gottman 1995) (p 41 Buddha’s Brain Rick Hanson & Richard Mendius) We always have choice. Our choice to become coaches involves trusting that the client has all the creativity and resources they need to resolve their own issues.

FOCUS INTENTION RESULTS EVALUATE UPGRADE PERFORM

Kathy will commence as Regional Support Developer for 2018 with the ICF (International Coaching Federation)

When my client stepped out of the lift after our third ride up to the 18th floor and beamed with pride, I had full evidence that she had shifted from ‘I can’t’ to ‘I did’. There is amazing joy when we achieve and experience what is truly possible.

THE RETURN OF THE WORKING RELATIONSHIP We’ve all heard the worrying stories and had bad experiences with the automation economy. There has been talk of every product and service imaginable being taken over by faceless eCommerce transactions. Companies have been outsourcing and off-shoring services to call centres all over the globe, just to save a few dollars. But doing this comes at a cost. While the way we do business is evolving every day due to the possibilities of the internet, in the past few years we have noticed an overwhelming return to the importance of building real human relationships in our business networks. This fact is evident in CommBank’s latest marketing campaign about all their call centres being shifted back to Australia, and the Industry Super Funds campaign targeting the mistrust and dishonesty of the big banks. These common messages highlight the importance of shaking the person’s hand on the other side of the transaction. When we work with people we know and trust we can focus on doing great work, rather than worrying about the integrity of the partnership. Humility is an important component of value. If you’re about to embark on a construction project, then you’re about to enter into a partnership. The most important piece of advice I can offer is to get to know your builder before signing the contract. Have a coffee and a good conversation with them and try to gauge the following:

• Do you get along with them? • Do you feel comfortable talking openly and honestly to them? • Do they have a proven track record of delivering on their promises? • Do you trust that when you ask a question you’ll get a direct and honest answer? A building and construction project can span a significant amount of time, depending on its complexities. It’s wise to spend sufficient time getting to know your builder prior to the project commencement. Sure, contracts and agreements play an important role but, at the end of the day,

the projects that produce the best results are always the ones that are built on a strong working relationship. Building confidence in your relationship with the person on the other side of the transaction is just as important as any other step in the process. It will pay dividends in the quality of your finished product and in your experience throughout. Some things haven’t, and shouldn’t, change. Trust, honesty, integrity and communication remain the most important factors in business. ca P: 07 5319 3068 www.coopersmall.com.au

My 11-year-old son recently came home from school with some homework that was cause for a family discussion. Where normally such family meetings are required for solving (relatively simple) mathematical problems or finding the best way to complete a task or project, on this occasion it was far more serious. This was preparation for a talk. And not just any talk, but a presentation to the class on what it means to be a good leader and role model. To my best little mate, being a leader is mostly about setting the right example and acting in a way that doesn’t have a negative impact on other people. To him, selfish behaviour, belittling conduct, name calling or putting others down is the opposite of good leadership. It seems that to an 11-year-old, the litmus test for poor leadership is whether there are tears in the playground! But it got me thinking. In business and in life, we so often put on a pedestal people who behave badly, have little respect for others’ feelings, and even those who display arrogant and narcissistic personality traits. In some cases, these people not only get promoted to Boards and CEO roles, but become successful politicians and in some cases, populist Presidents of the United States! So why is it that we believe that being a good role model or leader involves collaboration, teamwork and good emotional intelligence yet some of the most successful leaders of companies and countries are

EXAMPLE those whose behaviour is the antithesis of good leadership?

TRAVIS SCHULTZ LAW

LEADING BY

I recently came across an article written by Bill Taylor and was published in the ‘Harvard Business Review’. It was entitled, ‘If humility is so important, why are leaders so arrogant?’. It’s a research piece that really resonated with me. According to Mr Taylor, “Humility can feel soft at a time when problems are hard; it can make leaders appear vulnerable when people are looking for answers and reassurances. Of course, that’s precisely its virtue: the most effective business leaders don’t pretend to have all the answers; the world is just too complicated for that. They understand that their job is to get the best ideas from the right people, whomever and wherever those people may be.” I don’t for one moment disagree with this, but if that’s a truism, why is it that some of the most successful corporate leaders are narcissistic, self-indulged thugs?

Is the difference between a manager and a leader simply their intuitive understanding of the need to engage a team? Or is it the presence, persona or gravitas of a personality or their position? I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but one thing I do know is that in a team environment, a good lashing of humility by the leaders goes a long way to engaging the team. If the boss checks his or her ego at the door, it’s a far more pleasant environment for everyone! Or in my little mate’s case, it can make the playground a ‘tear free zone’! ca www.schultzlaw.com.au

I know it’s been a long time between drinks; well I’m back baby. After hearing the call of the wild for magic moments to return, I said to myself, “Self, it’s time this writer’s block came to an end”. WHEN IT COMES TO BEING SUCCESSFUL SELLING OR BUYING A BUSINESS, EDUCATION IS YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS! Dione Mauric is one of the TOP business sales experts here on the Coast. Not only is she a multi-award-winner, she has helped many business owners buy and sell their business.

BABY BOOMERS RETIRING = MORE BUSINESSES FOR SALE Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) are heading for retirement and we are seeing many new businesses in the marketplace; businesses that are well established and have a loyal customer base and many years’ trading history.

The benefit of buying a Baby Boomer’s business is experience! The owners have been in the industry for many years, they know their clients, they know the products and they have ideas on where the business can go. Building a business from scratch is hard work but, if you can buy an established business at the right price, you could save yourself many years of headaches trying to source clients, suppliers et cetera to grow your business. The businesses that are being listed range in industry from dry cleaners, takeaways, manufacturers to nurseries, printing supplies, automotive and transport. There is a large array on offer. Try searching ‘retiring’ or ‘retirement’ in a keyword search to see if you can find a business that an individual from this generation is trying to sell. Many of the business owners in this generation probably don’t have much superannuation and are relying on their business sale to support their retirement. They realise the value of their business and how much hard work it took to build over the years. So, whether you’re considering starting a business or buying one, be sure to view the Baby Boomers’ businesses who are heading into retirement. You can purchase experience and inject new ideas and build the business.

How are you feeling about your business? Excited? Stuck in a rut? Bored? Scared? HERE’S AN EXAMPLE OF HOW WE CAN HELP: A long-term client contacted us recently wanting to exit their business. We have been with them through the highs and lows of their business for years and now it’s time for them to move on. We worked with them and their management team to work out the best solution on how and when to exit the business. The funny thing is, we were able to sell for a lower price to the management team, leaving some butter on the bread for the new guys. We also saved our clients oodles of tax in the process, so they ended up with more cash in their pocket. Now we have extremely happy vendors and purchasers who, having seen the work we’ve done with the previous owners, want to utilise our services to grow the business in the future. It’s a win-win for all! Would you like to find out how we can inspire and assist you to define and achieve your financial and lifestyle objectives? CHOMLEY FAMILY LAW

PROUDLY HELPING OTHERS THROUGH FAMILY LAW PRACTICE BY SOPHIA AULD

Micaela Chomley has an inspiring list of accomplishments. But she’s most proud when using her training to help others through tough family times. She does this every day at Chomley Family Law. Micaela Chomley has a lot to be proud of: she’s mum to four beautiful children, wife of a wonderful husband and has completed a double degree in Commerce/ Law plus a Masters in Family Law. Another proud achievement has been establishing her business, Chomley Family Law. Micaela says she always dreamed of opening her own law firm and helping families start their lives afresh after separation and divorce. “By opening Chomley Family Law I have been able to help families through one of the toughest periods in their life and help them rebuild for a better tomorrow,” she explained. Micaela has exclusively practised family law since graduating in 2009 and is passionate about helping her clients achieve a lasting resolution while avoiding conflict or drawn-out litigation. “My job is about people and their life and helping them through a challenging time,” she says. “Doing this on a daily basis is an accomplishment.” A FRESH APPROACH TO FAMILY LAW Micaela says Chomley Family Law aims to do things differently to the traditional family lawyer. “We are helping our clients stay out of court through alternative dispute resolution which enables clients to finalise their matter a lot faster and is more cost effective,” she says. Alternative methods of dispute resolution include collaborative law, mediation and arbitration, Micaela explained. Chomley

Family Law has a friendly approach with down-to-earth people working on the team. “We use plain English and have an extremely personal approach,” Micaela says. “This is especially valuable for clients going through family law, at an emotional and confusing time when tensions can be high.” Chomley Family Law works across the family law spectrum on issues such as separation and divorce, children’s and parenting rights, property settlement, spousal maintenance, domestic violence, child support and more. Micaela explained they work around every individual client’s needs, whether that means an after-hours appointment, meeting

in a place that suits the client, or using Skype or FaceTime rather than face-toface. They can also offer fixed fees. GROWING A FAMILY BUSINESS Over the past 18 months, Chomley Family Law has grown to a business with three solicitors and support staff. “We have an amazing team that works together,” Micaela says. “There have been challenges – including being pregnant and having no maternity leave – but we have overcome them.” The business has continued to grow, thanks to Micaela’s ambition to do more, with less. She says they are constantly making things better, faster, smarter or

less expensive. This happens by using technology or improving processes.

remote working arrangements and a ‘mental health day’ once a month.

For example, they offer their clients an online questionnaire, which enables clients to obtain vital information to make informed decisions. It also means they can provide key facts for their case from the comfort and privacy of their own homes.

Thanks to continued growth, Chomley Family Law has been able to support the community through sponsorship and donations. They recently hosted a table and donated a diamond ring for the Sunny Kids Mayoral Ball.

“We are using technology such as Skype and FaceTime which enables us to have communication with clients all around the world and interstate,” Micaela says, “Whether it be from Ireland to Vietnam to Melbourne.” Micaela understands the value of looking after her people, too and offers flexible

“Assisting children and people experiencing domestic violence is something I am extremely passionate about,” Micaela says. “There is an ongoing problem in our society which needs to be rectified and we assist clients with it every day in our industry. There is a lot more that needs to be done.” AN INSPIRATIONAL FAMILY Micaela credits her amazing success to an inspirational woman in her life – her Mum. “She always said to us to get a career and encouraged us to contribute to society,” Micaela says. “My mum is strong, showed us the importance of having family and is down-to-earth.” And while Micaela started out believing she needed to do it all, she says

learning to let go has been one of her greatest accomplishments. “Over time I have learned to relinquish control over everything and come to the realisation you cannot do everything,” she says. “It takes a village to help you build a business. I have learnt it is important to delegate tasks as you cannot do it all yourself. I have been really reliant on the help of my husband, staff, family and our beautiful nanny.” And although her life is going swimmingly now, there have also been tough times for Micaela, who went through a divorce about four years ago. “I remember thinking this is not the way my life was meant to go, why did this happen to me?” she says. It may have been a painful process but going through divorce herself has given Micaela a real connection with her clients. “Having been through separation has allowed me to understand what my clients are going through, at one of the hardest times in their life,” she says. “I am able to provide empathy and help them rebuild for a better tomorrow.” e www.chomleyfamilylaw.com.au

SUNCOAST FITNESS

SUNCOAST FITNESS IS PROUD TO CELEBRATE

25

YEARS

In September 1993 my family purchased the old Cujo’s Nightclub floorspace at Lot 1, 24 Wirraway Street, at the bottom of the old Palms Resort. In the following month, construction began on the first Suncoast Fitness centre to launch on the Sunshine Coast. Overall, I have built, managed and owned five Suncoast Fitness centres on the Sunshine Coast, from Maroochydore to Pelican Waters, including Caloundra, Kawana and two in Maroochydore. We, as a business, have serviced the needs of over 50,000 Sunshine Coast residents and tens of thousands of guests over this time. Suncoast Fitness was the first club on the Sunshine Coast to offer all the trimmings of a mainstream metropolitan facility with full change rooms and showers, full air-conditioning, crèche, carpet and separate GF floors, registered compliant fitness professionals, physio, sports-specific qualified trainers and state-of-the-art equipment. It was cutting edge for the Sunshine Coast and Suncoast Fitness and pioneered the fitness industry landscape on the Sunshine Coast. In 1998, with the success of the Suncoast Fitness centre, the Palms Resort became Suncoast Resort. Managed by Suncoast Fitness senior team members, it was integral in the changing and upgrading of the building and its reputation. Suncoast Fitness moved from Wirraway Street to our latest facility in Wises Road in January 2006. Suncoast Fitness has been proud to be an active member of the Sunshine Coast community over the past 25 years through sponsorship, fundraising, financial support initiatives and community awareness programs. This has been directly responsible for an injection of over $1,000,000 into the community over this period. We are an integral part of many communities and have reinvested heavily back into this community on many levels, from charities to wellness initiatives. We are proud of what we have accomplished and our social awareness initiatives and programs that have been introduced over the years.

FOUNDER AND OWNER MARK STITT SAYS, ”THANK YOU”. 52 ISSUE 90

During these past 25 years, we have been a hub for visiting elite clubs and sporting fraternities, housing the Australian Swim Team Retreats for many years, overseas Olympic teams, Hawthorne AFL, East Rugby League-union and many more diverse sporting groups and teams. But we have never lost focus of our core group – you, the community members looking for a better quality of life and a healthier lifestyle. Our key to success has been to be humble and accept all into our group; we are diverse in our community and this is one of our greatest strengths. Suncoast Fitness has been the starting point for many successful careers and personal achievements, as well as flourishing businesses. Suncoast Fitness initiated and built the Suncoast Fitness HIT Room and Ocean Performance Centre. Now in its seventh year, it has seen hundreds of elite Sunshine Coast athletes access highperformance professionals, training environments and equipment. There is no greater success story is than that of FIT College. The Head Office is based here on the Sunshine Coast, next to Suncoast Fitness, and now delivers a variety of courses in six countries with over 20 campuses and a large diverse online learning platform that has no boundaries internationally. FIT College has over 100 team members and is growing; all of this started at Suncoast Fitness. I travel extensively now with my FIT College business and many people have asked me (nationally and internationally) how Suncoast Fitness has survived in such a diverse, fluid and competitive market for 25 years with the same owner. They ask me what I do? The answer is, “It’s easy”! I have the right people around me. The success and longevity are down to one simple formula: the team and the members

of Suncoast Fitness. We keep it simple. Wellness is not hard and should not be taken so seriously. It needs to be nurtured, lead and inspired in an environment that is friendly and motivating to members that have the same down-to-earth core values of humility, ethics and empathy. Thank you to all the members of the teams that have lead Suncoast Fitness and the members for making Suncoast Fitness the success story it is; it makes my job easy and so enjoyable. With the growth of the Sunshine Coast and its dynamic landscape, Suncoast Fitness is no longer the biggest, the latest or the trendiest facility on the Coast but, without a doubt, our culture, family-friendly atmosphere and highly qualified team, alongside our long-serving members, create an environment that is truly special from the crèche to the classes, physios, high-performance training room at OPC, Crank-it and TRX training, exercise physiologists, massage and more. I have no financial partners and have navigated this successful business through great community involvement and will continue to for another 25 years. Suncoast Fitness has almost 60 people that have been members since the beginning of the club in 1993. We have team members that have worked with us for over 20 years and a massive fraternity involved at the club over 15 and 10 years-plus. We really are a long-term business and value the core of Suncoast Fitness, the people involved in it. Thank you to the Sunshine Coast, our affiliate network, the Suncoast and OPC Team and our members for the loyalty and support. Through this, I know this iconic pioneering fitness facility has many, many years of service left for the Sunshine Coast. e STITTY

CASHFLOW TIPS -

HOW TO AVOID THE CASHFLOW LUMPS AS A BUSINESS OWNER You may have heard the saying that cash flow is king? Many business owners struggle with understanding exactly what problems can arise from not having a strategic plan around cash flow. Cash flow is about having money in your account at the end of the week. It’s crucial when it comes to paying expenses, repaying debt and planning for business growth. Here are some common cash flow mistakes to avoid, and tips on how to stay on the right path to success.

1. PUTTING YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND Common issues for a business suffering from poor cash flow include tax debt, bills piling up or missing

54 ISSUE 90

loan repayments. Clearly staying on top of these things is key but having a plan in place for when things don’t go to plan is just as important. Keeping the communication lines open with suppliers and the tax office is something that a lot of people fail to do. They stick their head in the sand and forge ahead with the challenges of everyday business life. Most suppliers will be more than happy to work with you on a payment plan, so keep the conversation open and flowing.

2. NO BUSINESS PLAN OR CASHFLOW PROJECTION Running a business without a solid business plan and cash flow projection is like playing darts in the dark. If this isn’t something you’ve had experience with previously, engage a professional service to help you. Taking the time to put an achievable business plan in place is crucial to your success. It will help you prepare for seasonal business cycles and any one-off costs that may arise.

3. LETTING YOUR OUTSTANDING INVOICES MOUNT UP Not having a strategy on chasing up outstanding invoices can stop your cash flow in its tracks. Businesses that utilise their accounting software program to effectively and politely follow up invoices have a much lower rate of concern around cash flow. Automated online overdue reminders are key to saving you both time and money, plus it will help you get your money back into your account where it belongs.

4. STICK TO THE PLAN Once you have your business plan in place, avoid the temptation to make snap decisions around spending. One of the things that most business owners love about running their own business is that they have the final say. That’s great, but it’s still important to think through the pros and cons of every purchase.

5. TOO MUCH INVENTORY It’s a fine line between having the right amount and mix of inventory

and holding too much of the wrong slow-moving inventory. Performing a rolling stocktake in your business is key to keeping on top of your inventory stocks. If you have old stock taking up space, try coming up with a marketing plan to discount on bulk orders, clear your shelves and make way for newer, higher turnover stock.

6. INADEQUATE ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE Online accounting software has come a long way over the past five years. If you are looking for different ways to simplify your administration process so you can focus more time on growing your business, you need to be on top of your accounts. If you haven’t already taken the plunge into the accounting cloud, it may be time to move into an automated system that lets you easily send invoices, make payments and run reports on your financial health. Simple to use, low cost cloud accounting systems are now widely used and can help you manage your business finances. Start by making a list of what you need, and then look for the system that works for you. Paying a monthly subscription fee can be worth it if it saves you time and helps you get invoices paid. COMMUNITY BUSINESS

PROFESSIONAL, RESPECT, INSPIRING, DETERMINATION

and EXCELLENCE Determination is an essential component of achievement – with unwavering commitment to excellence, both inspired by pride.

Pride instils pride and it starts with respect. A respected leader will set the pace, deliver a vision and outline the expectation. Committed teams follow, executing with determination to achieve. Achieving teams, no doubt have pride and respect for their leaders but it comes down to a level of pride and commitment in themselves. In principle this all sounds doable but what are the key links to enabling performance? I believe ‘strivers are survivors’ and

a consistent approach to improvement, such as continually striving for better outcomes, improved results, expert knowledge, refined process and increased efficiencies, will deliver outcomes and provide a pathway to excellence. Let’s face it, a ‘good, better, best, never let it rest’ philosophy doesn’t hurt anyone and can be applied to anything and everything we do in life. A leader’s pride is returned when their team achieves – not just in the achievement itself but for what they have created and fostered as advocates, ambassadors and executors of their vision. But there is one resounding fact; a leader is nothing without followers, just as surely, followers flounder without leadership. ca

It’s not often I get the time to reflect on that which gives me pride. It’s an indulgence with which I am not entirely comfortable.

Nathan Taylor & Nathan Drew (Fox Finance Group)

My Catholic schooling taught that pride was one of the Seven Deadly Sins, along with lust, envy, gluttony, greed, wrath and sloth.

Felicity Stewart (Aspire Housing Group), Dean Stewart (Retail Express)

It could be argued that these so-called vices have no place in the selling of real estate, although we see them often. For example, sellers demanding too high a price when motivated by greed and envy of what their neighbours’ property fetched; an agent driven by the lust for commission at the expense of the seller; a seller consumed by wrath at too low an offer from a buyer, or an agent guilty of sloth. Of all, pride is the one that could stand the test of time as a valuable trait in all real estate transactions. Vickie Magic (Matters Magazine), Kimberley Richards (KR Solutions), Susan Rod (Shout Out Films), Sue Scott (Scott Properties Group)

Seller pride in the way the property is presented; agent pride in the manner in which they conduct themselves, and pride in achieving the success of sale at a certain price. JOIN US FOR PATH PLANNING WRITTEN BY BETH HAWES

It’s that time of year again; time to document what activities have been completed and what activities will have to be put on the back burner and completed after the Christmas break. I have pondered the year and I’m very happy to know that so many people have been able to set about achieving some great outcomes and have smashed some goals all because of a very creative tool we use at Parent to Parent, called PATH planning. PATH Planning is not a new thing; it has been used very successfully since the early 1990s when it was developed by Jack Pearpoint, John O’Brien and Marsha Forest. PATH stands for Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope. PATH is a graphic tool that is used to set short and long-term goals and create a plan of action. It is a very personal tool that incorporates the ‘Pathfinder’s’ favourite colours, sports teams or anything the Pathfinder feels is relevant and important to them. PATH is widely used in many of our schools across Queensland, especially with students in the senior sector who are exploring their future careers. PATH is often used in our Special Schools and Special Education Units because it is a graphic tool (using colours and pictures instead of words), thus easy to understand if individuals 58 ISSUE 90

do not communicate using standard means. Businesses and organisations that need clear graphic goals and steps forward whilst incorporating pictures and colour also find PATH very useful.

Parent to Parent has been successfully using PATH planning since its inception. We schedule PATH plans throughout the year and enjoy working with participants in our community to identify, action and reach their goals. Our process takes about two hours for an individual PATH (longer for a business PATH), with our team of two (one facilitator and one grapher) visiting you, your school or business. If this style of planning is something you are interested in, please contact us. We are happy to discuss the process and would be delighted to help you achieve great outcomes. We are currently booking PATH plans for 2019, so call us on 1800 777 723 to get your dates on the calendar.

FROM A TAX POINT OF VIEW BY SHAREE WEBSTER, CA DIRECTOR, HOLMANS ACCOUNTING & TAXATION

The Festive Season is just around the corner and unfortunately, the ATO is not nearly as merry as the man in the red suit. It’s important to remember the tax consequences that come with hosting a Christmas party or rewarding your staff with Christmas gifts. Many business owners believe these expenses are tax deductible; unfortunately, they are not and could cost you more if you get caught by fringe benefits tax (FBT). The question of whether it is a (taxable) fringe benefit or not must be addressed. At first glance Christmas parties and gifts are considered to be a benefit; however, you may be eligible for an exemption by simply making a few tweaks to your arrangements. THE BEST WAY TO PARTY - FOR TAX PURPOSES If you want to keep your festivities FBT-free, host the party at your workplace during the working week, and limit attendees to staff only. WHEN Business hours WHERE Work Premises

If, however, you want to venture away from the workplace, you can still come out FBT-free if you keep the cost per person (staff and family) below the $300 threshold. Remember, this is the total of meals, drinks, entertainment and associated benefits. WHAT

Benefit of less than $300 per head Minor Fringe Benefit Exemption)

Note: As a general rule, if an FBT exemption is applied and you are not subject to FBT, you cannot claim it as an income tax deduction, nor can you claim any GST credits arising from these expenses. CHRISTMAS GIFTS Staff Gifts. Gifts provided to employees or their associates will typically constitute a property fringe benefit (yes, more jargon) and are subject to FBT unless the minor benefits exemption applies. Non-entertainment gifts (wine, hampers, gifts cards) will be an exempt

minor fringe benefit if valued under $300. A tax deduction and GST credits will also be claimable. Entertainment gifts, such as tickets to an event, movies or a holiday will be exempt from FBT if valued under $300; however, neither an income tax deduction nor GST credits can be claimed. Employee Christmas Bonuses. As a cash bonus is salary and wages, it is not subject to the FBT or GST rules. However, employers must also pay PAYG withholding, superannuation guarantee and payroll tax if relevant. Client Gifts. Where gifts are provided to clients in expectation of generating additional business in services or likely referrals, the gift is treated as a promotional expense and will be tax deductible, unless categorised as Entertainment. With all this talk of tax at Christmas, remember to enjoy the Festive Season, too! m Disclaimer: This article contains general information only. ACCOUNTING MATTERS

WHAT THE FESTIVE SEASON MEANS

Books take pride of place in many people’s homes and it has been proven that people who grow up in homes with books tend to have better mathematical and digital communication skills. In fact, people in homes with up to 80 books read more effectively, achieve more personal goals and participate in society more successfully.

Books are good for your brain as they keep your mind active and engaged. Reading is like exercise for the brain as it stimulates cognitive thinking and boosts your brain power. Reading books forces your brain to think critically as you make connections about characters, conversations and places from one page to the next. This activates healthy brain function and helps to strengthen your memory. Reducing stress is a significant benefit of reading as it can help you relax and even get to sleep more readily. Reading a book is a distraction away from daily concerns and provides one point of focus rather than the multiple tasks we normally work on at any given time. Books help you to remain present, focused and relaxed as you lose yourself in a great read. There are also some interesting findings about the relationship between fiction and people who lack empathy. Research has found that reading literary fiction helps people learn how to relate to others.

Fiction helps you understand what other people are thinking and feeling and has a greater impact than non-fiction on the development of empathetic skills.

In case you’re wondering about the difference between reading online material or printed books, it doesn’t really matter, so long as you read regularly you’ll experience the benefits in your daily life. library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

STEPS STAFFING SOLUTIONS

PUTTING THE CARE BACK

INTO RECRUITMENT STEPS Staffing Solutions is the Sunshine Coast’s newest recruitment agency targeting the Coast’s largest and fastest growing industry. Specialising in careers in care, STEPS Staffing Solutions are putting the care back into recruitment ensuring that local health, community, aged care and disability organisations are acquiring the best staff to meet the high industry standards.

Debbie Rawlings, Manager STEPS Staffing Solutions

STEPS Staffing Solutions Manager and recruitment expert Debbie Rawlings said the industry is long overdue for an overhaul in its approach to recruitment.

“When you’re talking about the aged, home and community care, disability and corporate healthcare sectors, you’re talking about placing people in roles that carry a great deal of responsibility,” Debbie said. “Whether it’s an executive level or supporting role, the way you perform your job has a direct impact on some of the most vulnerable people in our community.” STEPS Staffing Solutions take staffing the local care industry very seriously and have implemented a holistic recruitment process that looks far beyond the skills and experience of the candidate.

believes employers should be paying special attention to their staffing selection process. “When you’re looking to recruit in the aged, community care or disability sectors, the quality of a candidate’s personal attributes carry as much weight as their skills and experience,” Carmel said. “Empathy, understanding and social intelligence are key, no matter what the role is,” she said.

It’s an approach they take when recruiting for the full spectrum of roles in the sector, from operational and support roles to high level managerial and professional appointments. It’s this approach that will ensure their quality of recruitment under the National Disability Insurance Scheme that’s soon to hit Coast shores.

Debbie said that working as part of the industry, for the industry, has been hugely beneficial giving them a significant advantage and allowing them to achieve successful outcomes for their clients. “Employers know that we understand their needs, that we get it,” she said.

STEPS Managing Director Carmel Crouch said the latest offering from the community organisation STEPS Group Australia was inspired by the specific needs of the care and community industries. Having been involved in the industry for over 30 years, as well as experiencing her own mother’s journey through aged care, Ms Crouch

What’s the conclusion?

Let’s be honest, insurance contracts are long, boring and hard to understand! However, as with any other product on the market, it’s vital you understand how they work. The Product Disclosure Statement and the insurance contract will contain a lot of information; the three main points that you, the consumer, need to pay attention to are the insuring clause, the conditions and the exclusions. The insuring clause describes the broad type of cover and the scope of the policy. This sets out the broad risk the insurance company has agreed to cover. The conditions limit the exposure of the insurance company. These are the responsibilities that you, as the insured, must comply with for the policy to be valid. A common example of this can be found in many home and contents policies, where it states that the home must not be unoccupied for more than 60 days consecutively. If you do leave your house for longer than this and an incident occurs, the insurance company may not honour the contract as you have not met your responsibilities.

policies list riding motorcycles and scooters as an exclusion because the insurance company deems this as a major risk that will result in large claims. It is possible to have the wording of the insurance contract altered and have exclusions removed or endorsements added. After consulting with your insurance broker and completing a comprehensive risk analysis, your broker will find the most suitable policy for your needs. If any exclusions are identified in the policy that will limit the scope of the policy, rendering it worthless for your needs, your broker can negotiate with an underwriter at the insurance company and may be able to have the exclusion removed. Understandably this will increase the risk that is being assumed by the insurance company and they will increase the cost of the policy in line with the increased risk. The best way to find out what your insurance policy does and does not cover is to either read your entire policy, paying close attention to any conditions and exclusions, or contact your local insurance broker. Your broker will be able to explain to you what responsibilities you must comply with for the policy to respond to any claims. Your broker will be able to explain any exclusions contained in the contract, so you can operate your business within the scope of these exclusions. m www.awesoinsurance.com.au

Finally, there are exclusions. Exclusions are clauses that identify specific events, circumstances and types of losses that absolve the insurer of their obligation to indemnify the insured.

This is where insurance can be hard to understand and, if you are not careful, can result in your policy not responding when and how you thought it would. A common example of this can be seen when people travel overseas and are involved in an accident whilst riding a motorcycle or scooter. They may have purchased travel insurance prior to their holiday, assuming they would be covered if they were injured; however, many

UNRIVALLED CONNECTIVITY

The international sub-sea broadband cable to connect the new Maroochydore CBD with Asia is set to trigger an innovation surge across the region and deliver unprecedented investment opportunities on the Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Coast Regional Council recently exchanged contracts with telecommunications giant RTI Connectivity Pty Ltd to ensure the 550-kilometre undersea Japan-Guam-Australia-South Internet fibre optic cable will connect to a landing station adjacent to the new Maroochydore CBD. It will deliver the country’s fastest data and telecommunications connection from Australia to Asia and the second fastest connection between Australia and the United States by 2020. For business, this is a game-changer with the cable capable of delivering a constant seamless, reliable and high-speed Internet connection with no degradation in connectivity. It also places the Sunshine Coast firmly on the business map with Sydney and Perth currently having the only other Australian international subsea cable landing stations in the country. For service delivery in the sectors of technology, education, health, media and e-commerce it will herald a fresh era.

For example, all businesses that deal in high volume data and have necessity for high speed connectivity, such as financial, media and technology services, benefit from close proximity of the sub-sea cable and its immediate connectivity to global markets and partners. In the education sector, students could have constant access to a highly conversational and interactive tutor, generated through artificial intelligence, that can teach as well as become a source of reference material and other relevant information. SunCentral Maroochydore, the company overseeing design and delivery of the new CBD, has installed more than $10 million of underground infrastructure to ensure Maroochydore becomes one of the most digitally advanced cities in the country. The international sub-sea broadband cable makes our new city centre and the Sunshine Coast region an even more attractive proposition as an emerging centre for commerce in the 21st Century. ca maroochydore-city.com.au

T

he Sunshine Coast has earned a reputation for being the entrepreneurial capital of Australia based on the large proportion of the population owning their own businesses, and with so many key developments coming in the next five years, local industry is only going to grow further. But as TAFE Queensland’s Dean Sherwell explains, mutually beneficial partnerships and quality training are giving local enterprises an edge over their competitors. “When you invest time in your staff and train them in the right way, you can have a big impact on the performance of your business, regardless of the size of your organisation,” Dean said. “People often say, ‘what if I invest my time and money into my staff and they leave’, but what they should really be thinking is, ‘what if I don’t and they stay?’. “Quality, industry-standard training has the power to boost productivity and skills – which in turn can save a business plenty of time, effort and money in the long run.” In his role managing TAFE Queensland East Coast region’s Business Development team, Dean connects with the Sunshine Coast Council, Chambers of Commerce and local businesses to ensure that TAFE

“While we remain dedicated to providing students with hands-on experience and organisations with training for their employees, the focus is also about what training needs to look like in the future,” he said. “By being so heavily involved in the community and connecting with industry, we are not only ensuring the quality training of future and current employees, but are ensuring that we are across new developments so we can address the region’s training needs as they arise.” Having worked in business development and recruitment for most of his life, Dean says he has always been interested in the performance of businesses and the influence the people within them have on their success. It’s a passion he brought with him to TAFE Queensland when he started in 2015, and a belief that extends to the training sector. Dean has lived on the Sunshine Coast since 2011 and says although the region has grown and changed over the years, one thing he believes has remained consistent is the collaborative nature of local businesses, and how supportive the community are of local enterprises. “I don’t think the Sunshine Coast will ever lose that quality; it may be growing, but we are still very much a tight-knit community that care more about supporting people they believe

TAFE Queensland has strong connections to industry, enhancing outcomes for our students, as well as local businesses and the region as a whole.

Queensland is responsive to the training needs of this growing community. It’s a vital role that he says allows TAFE Queensland to keep its finger on the pulse of the region’s demands while it works to fill the skills gaps. “TAFE Queensland has strong connections to industry, enhancing outcomes for our students, as well as local businesses and the region as a whole,” Dean said.

in,” he said. “The relationship TAFE Queensland has with people in our business community is one of genuineness and integrity. TAFE Queensland has been around for over 135 years and is the largest training organisation in Queensland, so we clearly know what we’re doing. But it’s our authenticity, and our genuine desire to help local businesses be the best they can be, that draws industry to partner with us.”

SECRET OF SUCCESS?

STEWART PROPERTY

WHAT IS THE

The secret of success, especially in business, is to surround yourself with the best people. Here at Stewart Property, we have certainly done that, surrounding ourselves with not only a team of very professional and experienced staff, but local firms that deal with property purchases daily. It’s important to us to give you the best advice and service, so we’ve developed excellent relationships with solicitors, conveyancers, financiers, valuers and many other industry experts. The Difference between Appraisals and Valuations Whether you are a Seller or a Buyer, the most important part of any real estate transaction is the sale price. So how do we really come to that price? Getting that price right, has never been more important. A property valuation is different from an appraisal in that it determines the actual value of a property from an independent and unbiased point of view and can be relied upon from a legal perspective. In Queensland, this is done by a Registered Valuer. Valuations are ordered when a definitive value is required for a specific purpose, such as a property settlement or refinancing. A Valuer takes into consideration the physical location, size, condition, planning restrictions, zoning and more to arrive at a property value. A real estate appraisal takes in factors such as style or street appeal. Your home is compared to similar properties currently on the market. As market prices change it’s necessary to compare the property with similar properties in the same location that have sold in the previous three to six months. No two properties are identical, so an appraisal is subjective and real estate agents should have a good knowledge of recent property transactions. When you’re thinking of buying or selling on the Sunshine Coast, contact the team at Stewart Property. ca

TAKING PRIDE IN HELPING BUSINESSES GET

‘SET FOR SUCCESS’ WRITTEN BY SOPHIA AULD

Yvonne Rutherford was so inspired by the transformations in people she was working with, she wanted to do more. Her passion for helping businesses means she is still proudly running Set for Success more than 13 years later. When Yvonne Rutherford spent time in South Africa training teachers from around the world, she didn’t know this would become one of her proudest achievements. That was in 1995. Nor could she have known how many lives she would impact through Set for Success, the coaching business she started that same year. Whilst working as an English and media teacher in her native England, Yvonne ran gifted and talented summer schools for students from all over Northamptonshire county. Although the focus of these workshops was motivating students to achieve their goals, Yvonne increasingly found herself working with adults. She had already studied Emotional Intelligence and NLP for helping her students. “It transpired that I was also inspiring and changing the lives of the parents and adult helpers who attended the workshops,” Yvonne says. “I wanted to find a way to do more and reach more people.” As Yvonne started working with more adults and seeing them transform their lives, she did further training to become a Life Coach. On moving to Australia 12 years ago, she enrolled with the Coaching Institute in Melbourne, flying back and forth from the Sunshine Coast while she consolidated her skills in business and life coaching and studied to become a master NLP practitioner. Yvonne says her teaching background was excellent preparation for coaching, especially as it helps her to “not look surprised by my clients”! What does surprise her about working with her clients is “how excited I still get every time THEY make the change in their lives and send ME a thank you email or letter”.

70 ISSUE 90

“I JUST CAN'T HELP CELEBRATING FOR THEM,” YVONNE SAYS. She explains that Set for Success is different to some other coaching businesses because it is not ‘textbook driven’. “We work with each person or group as real individuals,” Yvonne explains. “We get you to where you want to be because we know the path – we've walked it.” Her clients say they love Yvonne’s high energy and no excuses attitude. “I think my favourite description I've heard is that I am ‘a breath of fresh air’,” she says. That energy and attitude have flowed over into Yvonne’s enthusiasm for the community, with Set for Success donating $10,000 this year to Camp Quality for kids with cancer. Early next year, Set for Success is opening a permanent retreat base – the Hidden Gem – for groups. “At the retreat, we have a strong emphasis on getting in touch with yourself through nature,” Yvonne says, “so forest bathing (shinrinyoku) is something we encourage everyone to do.” Yvonne says she is proud of the work she does, and of the privilege of touching so many lives here in Australia. But the experience of taking pride in her work isn’t completely new. “The town where I lived in England was so proud of the work I was

“I JUST LOVE BEING IN NATURE, SO COOKING ALFRESCO WHILE TELLING MY GRANDSON A STORY I'M MAKING UP (MY GROWN-UP DAUGHTERS LOVE TO LISTEN, TOO) IS MY IDEA OF TIME WELL SPENT,” YVONNE SAYS.

doing they voted me ‘the pride of Northamptonshire’", she says. “I'm also very proud that so many of my former students continually nominated me for the Teacher of the Year Award.” And while she thrives on helping others achieve their goals, Yvonne knows it’s important not to neglect her own development. “I have a coach myself because I like to walk my talk and it’s the surest way of achieving my goals,” she says. “I wish others knew and understood the power of having someone to hold you accountable to your highest values.” In fact, Yvonne is so impressed by the power of coaching that she sometimes finds it hard not to talk about it.

“I USED TO FIND MY OWN DESIRE TO INSPIRE EVERYONE I MET CHALLENGING!” SHE SAYS. “NOW THE CHALLENGE IS ENSURING MY NEW CLIENTS UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COACHING AND COUNSELLING!”

For anyone thinking about starting with a coach, Yvonne says finding the right one for you is crucial. “Coaches have different styles and energies. You're more likely to achieve all you set out to do if your coach is someone who you do respect or admire,” she explains. “My coach is someone that I look up to, so I work harder not to let him down!” When Yvonne isn’t coaching or being coached, she fills her time in doing ‘everything’. “I never think of time as spare. It's for living – all of it!” she says. Yvonne feels most relaxed when she is busy, and enjoys gardening, cooking up a healthy feast for family and friends, and writing poems and children’s stories. Here are Yvonne’s top three tips for inspiring your journey towards success: 1. Always start with the end in mind – you can't get there if you don't know where you are going! 2. Write down your goals – success rate leaps off the scales if you write your goals down and read them regularly. “Anything else is just a dream”, Yvonne says. 3. The best tip of all – get yourself a coach if you are really serious. They should be “someone who will call you on your excuses and hold you to your best you.” set4success.qld@gmail.com

BARTERCARD

THREE WAYS

to boost customers and cash flow in hospitality Do you have empty seats to fill? Want to boost cash flow in your restaurant or bar? With new venues opening daily, staying on top isn’t easy. Bartercard has the tips and tricks to stay ahead of the curve and think outside the box to attract new customers. ATTRACT NEW CUSTOMERS WITH BARTERCARD Food delivery services are buzzing and putting restaurants in the mix, but not all restaurants are choosing the paper bag approach. If your restaurant is at the higher end, consider the impact on waiting diners, food presentation and whether that’s on-brand with your restaurant. Looking to list on deal sites? Factor in the impact of discounting which can devalue a brand and attract one-off customers at a lower price point. Some third-party booking sites will keep the customer’s details, so the restaurant misses out on vital leads. Bartercard attracts new customers without discounting or third-party booking sites. Few restaurants and bars are at 100 per cent capacity around the clock; Bartercard can fill that downtime. These customers want to spend their Bartercard Trade Dollars and are more likely to return in the future.

INSTEAD OF SPENDING CASH ON EVERY BUSINESS EXPENSE Offset cash expenses with Bartercard Many restaurateurs use Bartercard Trade Dollars to purchase wine to then on-sell to cash-paying customers. This turns downtime into cash sales. They use Bartercard for expenses like kitchen equipment, furnishings and renovations by using their Trade Dollars instead of cash. To earn Trade Dollars, they welcome customers on Bartercard when they have spare capacity to keep their restaurant full. COAST INCOMES ARE

AND… FEMALES ARE LEADING THE WAY!! BY TED FITZGERALD SUNSHINE COAST NUMBERS EXPERT

For many years the Sunshine Coast was seen as a great place to holiday, and a lovely, affordable place to retire. Not far from the state capital, it had a relaxed atmosphere, not frantic like the Gold Coast. It had great beaches, beautiful hinterland and a climate the envy of most Australians. But it was definitely NOT a place to earn a BIG income or think about being able to build a serious career in an industry that could hold its own in competition from any part of the world.

But wait, the data shows that slowly but surely, BIG changes are happening! Now with over 375,000 residents, it is Australia’s ninth largest community and growing fast. Sadly, incomes although rising, are not yet matching those of other Queensland communities. The 2016 Census gave our median annual household income at just over $66,000 with the state median at $72,500, nine per cent higher. But the good news is our incomes are now growing faster than that of the state overall. Over the ten years 2006-2016, ours grew by 41 per cent, with state growth coming in at 34 per cent. And guess who are leading the way? Our wives, our daughters, our sweethearts!! Finally, female incomes are rising faster than those for males. And I, for one, am both delighted but not surprised. Over several years, I have attended graduation ceremonies at the University of the Sunshine Coast and watched in fascination as time after time more females were graduating into professional careers than were males. Real world examples? In 2006, there were 1,434 Sunshine Coast females with postgraduate (e.g. Doctorate) qualifications. In 2016, it had risen to 3,380, a rise of 212 per cent, almost double that for males at 119 per cent. And the same for bachelor’s degrees, a rise of 93 per cent for females, and 72 per cent for males.

And at last, these hard-earned achievements in education are starting to show where it should ... in pay cheques! Notice the highest income change was for ‘couples with no kids’. Hardly surprising for those of us who have reared a family. Carrying the responsibilities and duties of being a full-time MOTHER as well as a competent and available professional in the workforce is particularly difficult. These impressive changes to the ‘traditional’ role of females in the workforce also shows up in the changes in the ratio of female to male managers and professionals on the Coast. In the last ten years, the number of female managers has risen by 23 per cent, compared to males at 17 per cent. It’s the same with the ratio of professionals in the workforce. In the same period the number of female professionals rose by 64 per cent, compared to 42 per cent for males. And with rapidly increasing number of females now getting higher education, I think we will soon see some serious challenges to some entrenched gender stereotypes and male ‘entitlements. And, for me, not a moment too soon.

FITNESS MATTERS

REAL PEOPLE – REAL RESULTS

CASE STUDY

Cassie presented as a 30-year-old female and a mother of three. Her latest pregnancy included a few medical issues. That coupled with a busy lifestyle, left Cassie struggling to find both the motivation and time to get fit and maintain the balanced diet she wanted for herself. With her baby now three months old, she became very motivated to lose the excess weight she had gained over the past eight years and to strengthen her pelvic floor.

GENERAL RESULTS Statistics: 88 per cent of EMS users noticed significant back pain reduction after six sessions: 50 per cent were pain-free after six sessions.

PAST CASE SCENARIO

After 12 sessions the average person will lose nine per cent body fat, 3.5kg on the scales and 7cm around their waist (over one dress size).

Cassie was previously held back by: • Lack of motivation • Severe lack of time • Being a busy stay-at-home mother of three • Constant pain from sciatica • A diagnosed slipped disc in her lower back (which caused daily pain) WHY EMS? Having considered multiple fitness options Cassie selected EMS training. Her research showed her that it had been scientifically proven to be the fastest weight loss method, whilst also helping with her sciatica and back pain. Being able to perform her workouts pain-free and in the least amount of time was imperative. OTHER OPTIONS Personal Training: Ruled out as it didn’t fit her budget. Pilates, yoga and boot camp: Didn’t offer her the results she was after with both her time limitations and injuries.

CONCLUSION Cassie completed an initial health and fitness consult at an EMS studio and was cleared to start weekly 20-minute EMS sessions. Additional information and support were given regarding diet, motivation and posture correction. Cassie managed to come in for a weekly session for eight weeks and lost 2cm on each arm, 17cm around her waist and 3cm from each thigh, with a total loss of 3.5kg bodyweight. Furthermore, her strength in her arms increased by 38 per cent and in her legs (squat test) by 42 per cent. She reported a dramatic relief in back pain, being pain-free for the entire week after session number four. www.fitin20.com

FACTS Scientific evidence has proven that most new mothers are left with weak pelvic floors and variable degrees of abdominal separation after childbirth. Back pain is the leading cause of chronic pain and the second most common reason to visit the doctor. An incredible 80 per cent of the population suffers from regular lower back pain episodes due to various reasons. Strength training is the most effective solution for back pain, outperforming any other solution a healthcare provider can offer.

Listen to Cassie : “I have been doing my weekly 20 minute sessions at Fitin20 for the past eight weeks and I am blown away with what it has done for me! I have dropped a dress size and reshaped my body. I no longer have those ‘jelly arms’ that my four year old would point to. Even more importantly attending Fitin20 has boosted my confidence; I now feel stronger and more energized. I love the feeling bumping into people I haven’t seen for a while and hearing them tell me how great I look. My back and sciatica hardly give me any grief now. From someone who wasn’t into fitness at all, I can’t wait for my weekly 20-minute sessions. They just fit in great with my busy schedule as a mom. I can highly recommend Fitin20, it works and the service is so personal, you are not a number, they really care. Go give it a go, I promise you won’t look back!”

FOR LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUPS

The 2018 Mayoral Ball proved to be another stunning success with the gala event raising $67,000 to support the work of local children’s charity SunnyKids, as well as several other local organisations. In its three years, the Mayoral Ball has now raised almost $250,000 to help community causes on the Sunshine Coast.

Mayor Mark Jamieson with his wife Lorrell

This year’s gala event took place in mid-October at Aussie World’s The Shed, which was transformed into a 1920s-themed Ritz Ballroom with leading Australian stage and screen performer James Millar as Master of Ceremonies.

SunnyKids patron Mayor Mark Jamieson thanked the many volunteers, suppliers, auction and raffle prize donors and the event’s Foundation Partners, including SunCentral, HRM and Headland Business Park, who provided significant financial support to the event. “I would particularly like to acknowledge the collective effort of Karen Neuendorf and her dedicated committee who have worked tirelessly over the past three years to host this annual event and ensure it has become such a great success,” Mayor Jamieson said.

SunnyKids president Karen Neuendorf said the Mayoral Ball was a stunning and elegant event which delivered on all the expectations of her committee. “It’s been an honour to chair the Mayoral Ball Committee and I’m thrilled to announce that the event has raised nearly $250,000 over the past three years,” Karen said. “That’s an incredible amount of money and we couldn’t have done it without the efforts of our hard-working committee, along with significant support from the local community. “Best of all, the feedback from many of the 350 attendees has been really positive, which was really rewarding considering the hard work of our event planners, who transformed The Shed into a stunning version of the Ritz Ballroom. “The Mayoral Ball sold out six weeks early and that level of support indicates that there is a strong desire from the local community to dig deep and support those in need. The benchmark set by SunnyKids is extremely high and going by the growing popularity of this event, I am certain that it has now become the ‘must attend’ event on the Sunshine Coast social calendar.” c

“This was the third annual Mayoral Ball and each year it seems to get bigger and better. There were many highlights this year and one of the standouts was the stirring presentation from 2016 Suncoast Citizen of the year, Chappy Dave, who outlined the important role that he and SunnyKids play in our community.

MARK JAMIESON Sunshine Coast Mayor

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson keeps Matters Magazine readers up-to-date on what’s happening on the Coast.

“I am certain that SunnyKids will really appreciate the funding injection from this event and in keeping with the tradition of the Mayoral Ball, we’ve also been able to donate proceeds from the night to Suncoast Legal Services and Uniforms 4 Kids, as well continuing our student bursary at the University of the Sunshine Coast.”

WORDS MEAN BUSINESS

FIVE REASONS WHY

YOUR BUSINESS NEEDS A CONTENT MARKETING STRATEGY Did you know that small businesses with blogs get 126 per cent more lead growth than those without? Or that content marketing has six times the power of traditional marketing? Content marketing is relatively new on the scene but provides a bangfor-buck return that will leave you wondering why you haven’t done it sooner. Consumers have had enough of pushy advertising and shifty sales tactics. Instead, they are searching for businesses that are transparent, authentic and approachable. Content marketing is all about delivering valuable content – like blogs, newsletters,

social posts and eBooks – that builds relationship and establishes trust. Here are five reasons for using content marketing to grow your business. 1. Increasing organic SEO What business doesn’t dream of being on the first page when customers search for a product or service? One way of achieving this is optimising organic search. Regularly adding fresh, relevant content to your site continually builds on the repository of keywords and phrases that potential customers are searching for. According to Tech Client, websites with blogs have 434 per cent more search engine indexed pages than sites without.

I am passionate about Bookkeeping – Payroll – Budgeting and reconciling your accounts

But the days when you could stuff a trashy article full of keywords and expect SEO results are gone. Search engines are smarter now, and demote sites using such techniques. More importantly, your readers deserve better, so inspire them by serving up useful content that answers their queries and proves that you know your stuff. When readers find value in content, they’ll keep coming back for more – boosting search traffic and conversions. 2. Build brand awareness and loyalty To get customers, they need to know you’re out there. Tech Client stats show that 70 per cent of consumers learn about a company through articles rather than ads. you, because people buy from brands they know and trust. And you don’t need to get cosy over a cuppa on a couch. Great content connects you with your target audience – showing them you relate to their needs. In fact, 90 per cent of consumers find customer content useful, and 82 per cent enjoy reading content from brands. The more content you add that answers questions and solves problems, the more you build a community of loyal followers who see you as the go-to in your field. 3. Generate social engagement Social media strategy has become a buzz phrase, and with stats from Social Media News showing that 60 per cent of Aussies are active on Facebook, it makes sense. Twitter is also popular, with 4.7 million active monthly users, with LinkedIn having 4.5 million. This might make social media sound like a walk in the park, but unless it’s part of a wider content strategy, the results can be, shall we say, sad. A common problem for businesses exploring the social space is not knowing what to write or share. If you want to enter space,

you need a rocket. When it comes to social, the right words – combined with awesome images – will help you achieve lift-off.

relevance and concerns about security.

Your social strategy should consider what you want to achieve – such as driving users back to your website or increasing brand awareness. From there, develop a strategy around those goals.

In contrast, content adds value to consumers’ lives. Its focus on the customer rather than the brand is less intrusive. Not only that, content marketing builds momentum over time without any extra cash input, whereas paid search means you’ll always be dipping into your hip pocket.

4. Cost effective

5. Conversions

According to research by Kapost (in partnership with Eloqua), when compared with paid search, content marketing generates three times more leads per dollar spent.

According to ABG Essentials, content marketing pulls in conversion rates six times higher than other methods and is three times more effective than outbound marketing.

Advertising approaches that worked 20 years ago don’t cut it now. Ad overload has led to more than 615 million devices having ad-blocking software installed, according to PageFair’s 2017 Global Adblock Report. Another study by AdKeeper™ and 24/7 Real Media showed that online banner advertising has a click-through rate of less than one-tenth of one per cent. The reasons: two-thirds of respondents don’t want distraction from what they’re reading, followed by ads lacking

PRIDE BOOSTER

what is

PRIDE? WRITTEN BY VICKIE MAGIC

To me, pride is the feeling that I get when I achieve something that I set out to achieve. It makes me feel good, it makes me feel alive, it makes me feel excited AND it makes me feel fulfilled.

else it is about yourself that you don’t like, the more it becomes a habit for you to believe that truth. And not only that but the more we focus on our lack, the more we see it and therefore the larger it becomes for us. I believe that emotion is energy in motion, so if we focus our energy towards one thing (our lack in an area, for example) then that focus of energy turns into emotion. I truly believe that the truth is whatever you say the truth is.

If you think right back, what is the very first thing you can remember that you were proud of? I remember at around the age of seven being so proud of the fact that I could run fast. I used to beat most people that I ran against, and it sure did give me a sense of pride. It was a great feeling to feel that I could do something well, better than well, I was the best in my school and then a few years later, the best in Queensland. It’s pretty incredible how being good at something can make you feel good about yourself. For me, this was the beginning of building a good level of self-confidence for myself. It’s interesting isn’t it, because there is quite a fine line between self-confidence and arrogance. I believe that self-confidence is a great thing; it’s where you truly believe you are great at things and are proud of yourself. But, when you actually believe that you are better than everyone else, then I believe that turns into arrogance. The truth is, that not one human is any better than any other human; we might be better at a certain skill, but in our core, I believe, we are all exactly the same. Self-confidence is something that we all need but sometimes lack. We lose our confidence in our own ability and think other people are better than us. This can then strip us of our pride; in fact, the more we think we lack in a particular area, the lower our level of self-confidence falls. The funny thing is that it’s actually a habit; yep, that’s right, the more you focus on your lack of confidence and remind yourself how silly you are, how dumb you are, how fat you are, how ugly you are, or whatever

So, if you say that you lack self-esteem or that you are too fat, too skinny, too dumb or too something else, then guess what? That’s your truth and from there forward all there actually is left for you to do then is to live into that truth. WHAT TRUTH ARE YOU LIVING INTO?

WHAT TRUTH ARE YOU TELLING YOURSELF? IS IT SERVING YOU?

So many people live their life thinking that they simply have to survive, live out the hand they were dealt. I say, “CRAPOMOLA”. You always get dealt another hand, and another and another, we get choice after choice after choice, we are driving the bus, no-one else. We can’t blame our upbringing, our boss, our addictions, our ‘insert the thing you blame here’ - the reason you aren’t what or who you want to be. It’s just so easy to make the reason for our lack of pride due to something that did or didn’t happen to us. But guess what, right here, right now we can choose again and begin to create. So, it must start with you catching yourself, pulling yourself up when you beat yourself up. You see, when you are doing that you are in survival mode.

In survival mode you are:

STRESSED TIRED WORRIED ANXIOUS FEARFUL FRUSTRATED EASILY ANNOYED ANGRY INSECURE 80 ISSUE 90

WHAT DOES PRIDE MEAN TO YOU?

We asked a few Sunny Coasters this question and here is what they had to say. But, when we decide we are done with living in survival mode and make the decision to create, we become:

JOYFUL CREATIVE HAPPY ASTONISHED EXCITED LOVING GIVING CARING SHARING CONFIDENT AND PROUD. Don’t think for a moment that your lack of pride, or lack of confidence, is something that you can’t change because you can actually change the way you think in the blink of an eye; yup, the blink of an eye and it starts with your mouth. For starters, what if you made the decision right here and right now to stop surviving and start creating?

HOW WOULD THAT LOOK FOR YOU? WHAT WOULD IT MEAN FOR YOU? HOW DOES THAT FEEL?

If you are ready to stop surviving and start creating, then my tip is to start focusing your energy towards what you DO WANT for yourself and your life and STOP focusing on the things that you DON’T WANT. The more you WATER THE WEEDS (things you don’t want) the more WEEDS you will get. WATER THE FLOWERS (the things you DO WANT). Focus all your attention towards the things and the life that you want, and when you catch yourself criticising, judging or putting yourself or others down, simply remind yourself that

ENERGY = EMOTION And simply ask yourself, “What emotion do I want to create for myself?” Simply remind yourself that you are creating energy by focusing your attention on what you are focusing on and refocus your attention towards WHAT YOU DO WANT.

The Sunshine Coast is not only famous for its pristine beaches, lush hinterland and relaxed lifestyle; it is also home to a conglomerate of outstanding businesses, many of which have been grown from the ground up by astute, savvy and switched on businessmen and women. At a recent lunch at See Restaurant, hosted by our very own ‘Mr. Magic’, and with the beautiful Mooloolaba Marina as the backdrop, we invited some of these men and women to share their proudest moment in business and also what their clients and customers say that fills them with pride.

RENEE BLACKWELL

(Renee Blackwell Design) shared that it was not one moment but a combination of moments from the 30 years in her jewellery design business. That in itself is a milestone, and something she is most proud of.

82 ISSUE 90

PRUE SMALL AND HER HUSBAND BEAU

(Cooper Small Group) reflected on their pride in the culture they have created within their business. This was shared openly with them recently by one of their employees, who had worked in the industry all of his life but told them just how much he loved coming to work in their business. He also added how happy his wife was that he loved working for them, too.

RUTH HOLLAND (Expandasign), says that, after being in business for six years, taking the plunge and purchasing their own commercial property still fills her with pride. What was a huge decision and a somewhat difficult transition initially, now makes her smile as they often joke about having no space!

? D U O R P U O Y RUTH’S HUSBAND GRANT HOLLAND

(Expandasign) reflected on the growth and development of his staff and, in particular, one of their employees. She has grown with the business from her initial receptionist role to one of trusted office manager. He says they feel immense pride in playing a part in that development process.

DIONE MAURIC

(Finn Franchise Brokers) says her proudest moment happens quite frequently with families. She says facilitating a family going into a new business, starting their new venture and a new life, means helping them fulfil their dreams to take charge of their own destiny. “Every time I see that I’m really proud of helping them do that,” says Dione.

AND WHAT DID MR. MAGIC SHARE?

(Finn Franchise Brokers). Stephen shared a story about a client, whose whole viewpoint on what business brokers were, shifted to a positive one after working with their business.

Blinds and Security) says she is always so very proud every time their customers say, ‘thank you’. This is something that is important at home and in business. Marilyn loves knowing they have a really great team behind them creating happy and grateful customers. But perhaps the winner of the day was the unanimous sentiment and point of pride which was shared around the table, that came from referral business. This was a high point in business for all.

(ASTUTE Mooloolaba) captured the thoughts of the group when she shared that when people ring her and say, “I’ve been told to call you because you will be the one who can help me”, is a proud and rewarding moment.

That it is the positive feedback about some of the inspirational stories shared, which have made a difference in people’s lives and businesses. “And a real highlight is always the launch event for the magazine; seeing people who may never really network at all but tell us this is the best networking event they have ever been to makes Vickie and myself not only proud but know we must be doing something right.” e

BOBBY MARTIN

PRIDE AND JOY:

A MAN, A VAN, AND A LOVE FOR LIFE. WRITTEN BY JENNIFER FORSTER

If we are to believe the old saying, ‘take pride in how far you have come and have faith in how far you will go’, it would be easy to imagine that Bobby Martin was, indeed, the inspiration. Bobby swapped his tradie life to work as a snowboard instructor until an accident saw him fall 70 feet, landing on hard icy ground and breaking the entire right side of his body. At just 22 years of age, and after reading the bestselling book, ‘Awaken the Giant Within’ by Tony Robbins, this accident would be the catalyst for his own personal self-discovery and would eventually send him on a 12-year, life-changing, journey around the earth. Bobby experienced the stark and very real contrasts that life has to offer, from working with the rich and famous on superyachts to volunteering in orphanages in the slums of India. One day he would be eating the finest foods in the world and the next, he would be sitting at the foot of the Himalayas listening to the wisdom of the Dalai Lama. The highs and lows of this real-life kaleidoscope of wondrous experiences would also bring Bobby face-to-face with his own addictions, depression and anxiety and the struggles to overcome them. 84 ISSUE 90

Bobby eventually found his secret to a balanced life and now travels the country in his custom-built van, complete with a bathtub, working as a life coach successful life coach - (his business is called Coach Me Bobby).

“‘Vanlife’ has helped me find my best flow in life,” says Bobby. “Waking up on a new beach every day is the most amazing feeling.” Bobby chooses to invest his energy in a life he loves living, rather than in what he calls the ‘rat race of paying rent and bills’. ‘Vanvesting’ is what he describes as the investment strategy which has allowed him to do this. Over the past seven years, he has been writing a book filled with all of the tips, tools and life lessons he has learned along the way and will soon be self-publishing this in an eBook, called ‘Underlying Reasons’. Currently here on the Sunshine Coast, his van is a magnet to anyone walking past and it’s easy to see why it draws attention. Bobby calls it his ‘beach hut’ and welcomes photo requests from locals, and has even been known to whip up a meal or two to share as well. “I have had many amazing conversations in the time I have been here,” says Bobby.

BOBBY MARTIN

“Connection is everything for me so thank you Sunny Coast for your warm sunburnt hearts and kind words.” There is no doubt that Bobby can be proud of the life he has created since that fateful fall onto bone-breaking ice. He has not only consciously created a lifestyle which brings him immense joy, but he also shares these experiences and wisdom through his work as a life coach and connecting with locals. Although Bobby does not believe there is such a thing as a perfect life, he does believe that we can all fill our lives with many perfect moments.. e

GEMOLOGY COSMETICS

WORLD CLASS INNOVATION

in French luxury skincare launches in Australia This month was the official Australian and New Zealand launch of Gemology Cosmetics at the multi-award-winning Shine Beauty Southport salon. The launch was hosted by Tania and Joel Turner, founders of Shine Beauty; Gemology Cosmetics founder, Chrystelle Lannoy, flew from Paris to attend the event, part of the fast-growing global expansion of this world-class brand. Chrystelle had dedicated her professional life to prestigious and iconic skincare brands such as Clarins and Pevonia, prior to founding Gemology. “When I conceived the idea to start Gemology, I wanted to create something truly unique,” says Lannoy. “That is, the first cosmetics skincare brand in the world based on minerals from gemstones. I have always been utterly fascinated by the properties of gemstones to intensify skin cell regeneration, to virtually hold back time.”

over three years because, at the time, ingredients from gemstones didn’t exist for this purpose,” Chrystelle said. “This work was highly visionary, and when we started to fully understand how these gemstones could help women to repair and renew their skin, we knew how ground-breaking this work really was.” The line was officially launched in 2007 in Paris, France at the Ritz Hotel and today, is available at some of the world’s finest international hotels, luxury resorts, prestige spas and iconic vacation destinations. The Australian-New Zealand launch was attended by media and local VIPs, who enjoyed French Champagne, canapes, product demonstrations and sumptuous gift bags.

Lannoy had previously worked alongside Dr Jean Claude Bozou (PhD in Biology and Pharmaceuticals) to create formulations for many prominent European cosmetic brands.

“Our clients are already raving about Gemology,” said Tania. “Working with Chrystelle and Gemology is a dream for us because we are leading the way in the beauty and anti-ageing industry.” e
