Welcome to our ‘PURE MAGIC’ edition of Matters Magazine. In this issue, we are uncovering all the LOCAL MAGIC that we can find right here on the Sunshine Coast. There are so many amazing businesses on the Coast, we thought it would be a great opportunity to share some with you. I can tell you we’ve have had loads of fun finding out some very interesting things about some local products and services.
EDITOR'S NOTE
First up though, speaking of a local businesses, I want to say congratulations to Genine Howard from Profile Magazine. In case you hadn’t heard Genine recently announced that the April issue was the last hard copy of the magazine to be delivered on the Sunshine Coast. I can only imagine what a decision that was for Genine to make. So I just wanted to say, “Well done Genine for honouring your purpose and your passion, that can’t have been a simple decision”. Don’t worry Sunshine Coast, Matters Magazine is not going anywhere, anytime soon. We plan to bring you even more of WHAT MATTERS MOST ON THE SUNSHINE COAST. We will include more fashion, more food, more where to go and what to buy as well as the ‘Entice, Excite, Educate and Engage’ that we currently offer as the CONTENT DRIVEN magazine. I just want to say thank you for so much amazing feedback from our ‘Transformation Issue’. Wow! We received so much local love, and I personally received an outpouring of offers to assist me on my transformational journey. I am happy to announce that I have released 8.9 kilos so far and the transformation is in full swing. Nothing can/will stop me now; it’s a given, committed to do ‘whatever it takes’, and am on track for the Christmas 2019 deadline. Isn’t mindset a beautiful thing? You and I can so easily sabotage our own success; I know I have done it for years with this weight loss thing, I truly believed I couldn’t do it, or I could do it for a little bit but then I would fall in a heap and because that is what I truly believed, all there was left for me to do was to live into that truth. Have you done that to yourself? In business we do it over and over; our limited beliefs are constantly stopping us from obtaining the success we want and deserve. Have you ever been the one standing in the way? I know I have! It comes down to truly believing in yourself and your product. Having been on the Sunshine Coast for 12 years, I can tell you that I have tried and tested that theory over and over.
The truth is that the real MAGIC goes on inside our brains and we truly can learn to tame it. See my article THE REAL MAGIC on page 8.

PURE MAGIC
Do you think
PURE MAGIC really does exist? BY VICKIE MAGIC
The truth is that the PURE MAGIC happens between our ears. Have you personally ever been the reason for your own failure? Have you ever failed at a marriage? A diet? A business? A relationship? You may be reading this and thinking, ‘Yeah but’, and your ‘yeah but’ might be laying the blame on someone else. It was so and so’s fault; if they did or didn’t do, such and such, it would have been successful. And maybe, to some extent, that might be true. But I know for my own part if I look back at some of the things I failed at, most of the time it was my reactions; most of the time it was me in the way. Me sabotaging my own success. If I think back to the millions of times I tried to
8 ISSUE 92
lose weight over the past 10 years and failed; it always came down to me putting the wrong foods into my mouth. Me deciding that I could no longer starve myself (ha, too funny). Me deciding that it wasn’t worth it, or me deciding that it was just too hard. I now totally believe that it’s actually harder not to. I now totally believe that I was the only thing in the way of what I wanted and my success. JUST ME. So yeah, the real magic to anything we want for ourselves and our lives is being able to tame our minds, being able to stop the self-sabotage and being able to truly believe in our abilities to achieve whatever it is that we want to achieve for ourselves and our lives.
So, whether it is business success, weight loss or health success, relationship success or any other type of success, it starts and ends between the ears.
This coupled with daily gratitude really is THE REAL MAGIC. It changes the game; it changes your life. You can go from UNHAPPY TO HAPPY AND PEACEFUL in such a short time.
The first thing to truly understand (in my opinion) is that we can’t fight a thought. I have found that if I try to push the thought away, tell it to be on its way, or even ignore it, it tends to come back even stronger.
And you can go from failing in a certain area, to complete success.
I have found that it works better to thank the thought and relax into it; to realise that its job is to protect me, to protect me from getting hurt, to protect me from pain. It’s saying, ‘Remember the last time you tried that? You got hurt. Don’t try that again or you will get hurt again’. It’s trying to protect us, so thank it for the effort. Begin by simply slowing down your breath, then on each inward breath, say the words, ‘Thank you’ and ‘Relax’. Imagine actually thanking the thought as you say ‘Thank you’, then totally relax into it. Allow your body to truly relax the thought instead of pushing away from it. Then say the words, ‘Release and let go’, and what you find is that the thought can eventually begin to change. As you say, ‘Release and let go’, you imagine thought just floating off on a cloud. It sounds a bit far-fetched, but it really does work. It makes you feel less anxious, less stressed, less worried and definitely helps let go of all those limiting beliefs. I do this each and every morning to simply start fresh and let go of any anger, frustrations, worry, stress, self-doubt, self-worth, self-confidence and, most definitely, self-beliefs or limited beliefs that are stopping me from being the best me. So, on the inward breath I say, ‘Thank you’, then ‘Relax’, and on the outward breath I say, ‘Release and let go’.
Slowing down the breath as slow as possible.
The truth is that what we focus our attention on grows, so why not focus on what we want rather than what we don’t want? Have you ever focused all of your attention towards what’s going wrong? Trust me, if you do, you actually make it happen, you will just keep getting more of it and begin to see more going wrong around you.
DAILY GRATITUDE IS AMAZING; IT TRULY HELPS YOU TO SEE WHAT’S IN FRONT OF YOU, TO APPRECIATE WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE.
If, on the other hand, you focus your attention on being grateful for the things that you love, then you get more of that. I take it to another level, too, by being grateful in advance for what’s coming my way. I truly believe what’s coming is going to be exactly what I want, or what I need, and that it will be absolutely perfect.
NOW THAT’S PURE MAGIC.

LEGAL MATTERS
SPOUSAL MAINTENANCE
– ARE YOU ELIGIBLE? Spousal maintenance is financial support paid by a person in a marriage or de facto relationship to their former spouse or partner in circumstances where they are unable to adequately support themselves. If the need exists for spousal maintenance, both parties have an obligation to support each other to cover their reasonable expenses. This can continue after separation and divorce and the extent of the support depends on what the other party can afford to pay. The court considers the following factors to assess the receiving party’s needs and the paying party’s capacity to pay: 1. Your age and health 2. Your income, property and financial resources 3. Your ability to work 4. What is a suitable standard of living 5. If the relationship has affected your ability to earn an income 6. Who cares for children under the age of 18. Spousal maintenance is not automatic and often is considered as part of the overall settlement of financial matters. Applications for spousal maintenance must be made within 12 months of your divorce becoming final and up to two years after the breakdown of a de facto relationship. It is necessary for both parties to attempt to reach an agreement outside of court, before filing an application for spousal maintenance. In some cases, the Court might find it appropriate to hear an application prior to negotiations taking place if there are situations involving urgency, child abuse or family violence. Spousal maintenance payments are generally not long-term and are intended for a discrete period of time following separation to enable the applicant to get back on their feet and obtain some financial security.
We understand families, we have families too At Chomley Family Law we aim to help you reach a quick resolution whilst achieving a lasting agreement and avoiding high conflict situations. We offer the following services:
• Separation/ Divorce • Children/ Parenting rights • Defacto • Child Support • Binding Financial Agreements • Domestic Violence • Dispute Resolution • Grandparents Rights • Same Sex Relationship • Paternity You wouldn’t hire a plumber to change a light bulb. Why would you trust anyone but an alternate dispute solicitor with your most precious asset, your family?
Remember that every case will involve different considerations based on the unique circumstances of each relationship and there is no formula for determining how much spousal maintenance is reasonable for a party to pay. m www.chomleyfamilylaw.com.au

BACKUPS IN THE CLOUD?
The transition of modern business technology platforms into a cloud delivery model has provided many benefits to business, namely mobile workforces and access to applications without the need to manage complex onsite systems.
But with this transition, do we need to consider backup and continuity? Isn’t this taken care of for me under my subscription fee? In many cases yes, the primary backup and disaster recovery, along with the management of the system to provide access to the application, is managed by the application provider. However, depending on the application or service, there are scenarios where the provider may consider this to still be the customer’s responsibility. Such scenarios include long-term accidental deletion of data, loss of data due to departing employees or deactivated accounts, or loss of data due to malicious insiders, hacktivists, malware or ransomware. The first step is to understand two key elements in your business: Recovery Point Objective and Recovery Point Time. RECOVERY POINT OBJECTIVE: Simply, this is the age of data that can be recovered from a backup. How far back can a recovery go and not have a significant impact on your business? For example, can your business restore data that’s a day old or three days old, or can it only be hours; and at what point would this cause significant financial loss or operational risk?
Step two is to ask or research a cloud application or service provider’s policy around these areas: 1. What are their Recovery Point Objective and Recovery Point Time targets and do they meet your expectations? 2. What measures do they take to secure the information you store in their systems? 3. Where do they hold your data? Is it kept onshore in Australia or is it located offshore? 4. Do they have multiple copies of your data, in different locations? 5. How do they test that the measures they have in place work when needed?
6. Can you get a copy of the information out of their cloud if you request it? The answers to these questions will tell you whether the cloud application provider’s policy meets these expectations for your business with their product or service or, if not, you may need to take additional measures to ensure these objectives are met. It is a certainty that all technology systems will experience some form of outage or service interruption at some point and consideration around how you manage that risk in your business to minimise this impact is key. m www.secureaccess.com.au
JONATHAN ALLEN Secure Access
RECOVERY POINT TIME: This is how long it takes an application or system that has experienced an outage to be restored to full function. This can be hours, minutes or days. Again, at what point will this cause significant financial loss or operational risk?
Jonathan has 16 years’ experience in the technology industry, with eight of those years at Secure Access. He started his career as a technician and has spent the last 10 years in Operations Management and Account Management roles, providing strategic technology guidance to small and medium-sized businesses.
Each application or technology system will have a different answer to these questions, and each business will have different objectives based on the type of product or services delivered and the scale of the business and the risk involved.

FIVE WAYS EMS TRAINING IS DIFFERENT FROM A CONVENTIONAL WORKOUT WITH ROELIE SCHMIDT
You’ve probably heard of EMS Training and wondered how it differs from a conventional workout. Here’s how: TIME SPENT EXERCISING (FOR SIMILAR RESULTS) An EMS workout will stimulate eight muscle groups, as opposed to one to three, and will generate a muscle contraction that is 3.5-times more effective and will raise your metabolism. This makes EMS training 18-times more efficient than conventional training.
lean muscle with strength training. EMS training is very efficient in raising metabolism: the level is higher, and it raises the metabolism for four to five days, instead of 36 hours with conventional training. TREATS BACK PAIN Strength training is phenomenally effective in treating back pain. EMS stimulates 98 per cent of the muscle fibres as opposed to 30 per cent. This builds strong and symmetric back muscles which help stabilise the spine, treating chronic back pain, scoliosis and sciatica. Studies show that 88 per cent of back pain participants were pain-free after six sessions. TRAIN WITH INJURIES
A 20-minute EMS session is the equivalent to over five hours of regular strength training. A weekly EMS session will take 0.3 per cent of your awake time, whilst conventional training would take seven per cent.
EMS workouts are guided by a Personal Trainer and are designed to both treat and train around any injuries, including bursitis or tight muscles. It increases circulation and builds muscles around the injury like a natural sling. With no jumping and no weights, there is very low joint impact. You can even train your whole body, including leg muscles, very effectively whilst sitting on a chair completing zero joint impact exercises.
EMS BUILDS LEAN MUSCLE AND RAISES RESTING METABOLISM
TREATS CELLULITE, STRENGTHENS PELVIC FLOOR
EMS builds effective shaped muscles and is also extremely effective at raising resting metabolism. It’s a myth that to burn fat you must spend hours on a treadmill. The most efficient way to burn fat and raise metabolism is by building
EMS tightens connective tissue and improves skin tone, thus transforming cellulite into smooth skin. It also strengthens the pelvic floor and studies show 75 per cent of participants were free of incontinence after ten sessions. ca www.fitin20.com.au
ABOUT ROELIE With a 10 year history of training elite athletes and being active in the medical field, Roelie Schmidt is passionate about the potential and science of EMS training. Key part of our studio is creating a supportive and inviting environment that is first in the field of EMS fitness and remedial treatment.

Are you a ‘she’ll be right, hold on by the seat of your pants’ kind of business person? Or are you strategising and planning your success? We have all heard it, and at our core know it’s true, but the old saying, ‘proper planning prevents poor production’, certainly is on-point.
If we really do want to have that success, then we had better start putting that strategy in place right now. THREE STEPS TO SUCCESS.
1. You must have a map: You won’t get anywhere if you just get in the car and drive. Well, you will, and it may even be fun, but if you want to get to a particular place, that you have never been to before, you MUST FOLLOW THE MAP. 2. You really have to believe you can achieve it with all of your heart; practice this by seeing yourself achieve it in advance. Visualise yourself succeeding, see how you would be, feel how you would feel, hear what people would be saying to you. Really step into the belief. 3. ACTION: We all know that the key to success in anything is ACTION. Why is it that we still sit back and expect without action? So begin by taking the ACTION you know you need to take. Take one small step each day towards your success.
What small step will you take today?

UNDERSTANDING COMPREHENSIVE CREDIT REPORTING In 2018, the major banks began Comprehensive Credit Reporting, including providing ‘positive’ information such as how often you pay bills on time, as well as more detailed information on credit accounts, limits and the type of credit provided. In 2019, this is stepped up further with the major banks beginning to provide access to data regarding your credit and debit cards, deposit and transaction accounts and, later in 2020, on mortgage accounts. Why does this matter? It’s easier for lenders to get a more complete picture of your spending habits and repayment history when assessing loans, and to see your day-to-day living expenses rather than relying on estimates. How to make your credit report shine? Pay your debts on time. Don’t overdraw your credit card and be careful with services like Afterpay and Zip Pay as they may appear on your credit report. Be careful with discretionary spending like Uber Eats. And check your credit score to ensure there’s no incorrect information or outstanding credit facilities like old store cards. ca Astute Financial Management Pty Ltd Ph 0414 789 665 Web astutefinancial. com.au/members/mooloolaba/ ABN 59 093 587 010 Australian Credit Licence Number 364 253

TAX MINIMISATION It’s a hive of activity in accounting offices at this time of the year; we are meeting with business clients to plan and minimise tax before 30 June! Some common strategies used to manage and minimise tax include: • Defer income activities where possible
PHOTOGRAPHY with Mike Korsos
READY FOR AN ‘ORGANIC’ CHALLENGE? Do you really enjoy getting out and about and capturing the world through the lens? In this day and age, with digital technology, we can effortlessly take really good images.
• Write-off bad debts
But do you ever wonder how to challenge yourself even more? How to get more joy out of your photography?
• Write-off obsolete stock
The answer is film.
• Invest in tools/vehicles/equipment to take advantage of the recently increased $30,000 instant asset write-off
This is an ‘organic’ option which takes the act of a happy snap to a different level. I say ‘organic’ not only because of the whole chemical nature of film photography, but also the photographer needs to be much more aware of the situation. There’s no chance of taking hundreds of shots with film.
• Prepay operational expenditure
• Pay additional superannuation contributions • Review of legal entity to take advantage of effective tax rates • Plus, many more specific to your business. Of course, any tax minimisation strategies must be considered in line with available and forecast cashflow to ensure you don’t choke your working capital just to save a few dollars in tax. For business owners, this is also the best time to finalise your remuneration strategy for the year: wages, directors’ fees, dividends and/or trust distributions – or a combination. 30 June will be here before we know it so, don’t delay, speak to your advisor today! ca Brilliance for Business Ph 07 5437 7624 Email melissa@brillianceforbusiness.com.au
It’s organic because every shot is made to count, and care needs to be taken before we press that shutter button. And it’s organic because there is a physical object, as a result, when we shoot film. At Korsos Photography, we have film, we shoot film, we process film. We love film. ca

NO MAGIC PILLS, ALL HEART & NO GIMMICKS!
THE MAGIC OF THE RIGHT FIT
COMMON BUSINESS RISKS YOU NEED TO MANAGE
In the last 24 years of being in the fitness industry, Lucas and I have come across a gimmick or two in our time. We are about to have our first baby in June and our midwife has often responded to a question with, “Do you REALLY need that?”
Think about the best job you’ve ever had. Chances are you were successful in the role, fitted in well, had longevity and still promote that organisation.
Most business owners must handle a variety of risks, including safety, operational, financial and compliance issues. It’s much easier to manage these risks when you know what products will assist you.
It made us realise that in every industry we must be aware of gimmicks. When it comes to fitness and getting in shape, do you REALLY need to spend hundreds of dollars on supplements and fat burners or can we just move more and eat less processed foods? Don’t be fooled into thinking there is a magic pill. We are big believers in getting the basics right and staying accountable to someone before spending hundreds of dollars on fitness gimmicks. We believe the real secret to lifelong success is being part of a fitness community that can coach you to be the best version of yourself and has your best interests at heart - NO GIMMICKS! Your best step is to talk to your local insurance broker, who can tailor an insurance package to minimise these risks. Some common risks that business owners face: Protecting your staff members from an incident at work: The relevant policy to cover this risk would be Workers Compensation. If you are injured and are unable to work: Income Protection Insurance. If your business is hacked or your IT infrastructure rendered useless: Cyber Risk Insurance. If a customer hurts themselves at your workplace: Public Liability Insurance. Working with your insurance broker to ensure your business is adequately covered for all risks is paramount. It is also crucial to ensure that the sums insured are enough to cover your business assets. Don’t leave it to chance; talk to a specialist risk broker. ca Please be aware that any advice offered is General Advice only and has been prepared without taking into consideration your objectives, financial situation or needs. Bringing the SEX APPEAL back to steel BY SOPHIA AULD
It might seem a little unusual for a success coach to be heading up an engineering company specialising in steel, but Yvonne Rutherford is no stranger to the industry. “Engineering was my first trade and love”, says the director of AusRam Engineering. “I left the industry to eventually become a teacher, but I never lost my passion for creating things from steel.” AusRam Engineering, centrally located in Kunda Park, has been fabricating and installing structural steel on the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas for six years. They work with builders who need steel or aluminium solutions on any scale, no matter how large or small. “Our clients come to us from all walks of life,” Yvonne explains. “Some are big builders needing complete structural buildings. Some are small builders requiring posts, handrails et cetera, and some clients have something as small as a broken weld and just need some help to get going again.” Yvonne loves a challenge and has brought her passion for solving clients’ problems into her role. “We actively enjoy helping clients solve steel issues,” she says. “We create solutions in steel!” They do this by listening to their clients, working through what they need, and then helping them to achieve what they set out to do. She says Ausram’s clients appreciate the team’s ‘can-do attitude’, and that they’re always smiling. “It’s a very magical feeling when a team of people work together with the same goal in mind,” she says. “The energy of a ‘can-do attitude’ just can’t be beaten.” Their commercial steel supply and fabrication service includes workshop detail drawings, procuring materials, light or heavy fabrication of structural steel, surface treatment (painted or galvanised), transport logistics and site installation. On the domestic front, they can manufacture columns, balustrades, reinforcements, beams, posts, walkways, specialised brackets, stairs, platforms, safety rails, guards and grating. 20 ISSUE 92
Trailers are a speciality, and their trailer department will build your customised order to carry Posi Track and Bobcat equipment and all of your attachments. They can help with box trailers, boat trailers, hydraulic tipper trailers, toolbox trailers and trailers custom-built for your needs. They also make general machinery repairs to vehicles, including bobcats, excavators, lawn mowers, caravans and truck bodies. Their experienced team of engineers can provide design and construction advice. Plus, they can custom-build anything that you need from steel or aluminium.
Their results speak for themselves, with several successful projects recently completed on the Sunshine Coast, including the fabrication, supply and installation of all the structural steel for the new Good Samaritan Catholic College in Bli Bli. “We are also very proud of our work building the Maroochydore Gymnastic Club and other projects such as Mango Hill State School and the stainless steel stand at Alex Heads Surf Club,” Yvonne says. “We’ve even been as far as Chinchilla to ensure the school is up and ready for the kids!” Her favourite structures she has built are the triple-cantilever signs along the Bruce Highway that point the way to North Harbour. Explaining how she became involved with AusRam Engineering, she says that the business was originally owned by a client that she was coaching. During one of our meetings, he declared, “You know what you’re doing – you have it!” she says. “I eventually bought the business, so he could retire.” She did it because she believes in walking the talk. “It’s so easy to tell anyone what you think they should do,” she says, “but walking the path and putting your money where your mouth is, is what I’m all about. I don’t ask anyone to do something I wouldn’t do.”
One area where AusRam walks the talk is precision. They make it a priority to measure twice and cut once because they know that a 1mm or 2mm variation can make all the difference to your finished product. This gives clients confidence that their product will do what it’s meant to. They also pride themselves on completing projects on-budget and on-time, so clients have peace of mind that their project will be delivered when it’s due with no fear of a cost blow-out. Besides providing a high level of quality and service, they provide good value for money. They believe that offering a high level of professionalism, quality and service in the construction industry will lead to reliable and lasting working relationships with their current and prospective clients. Yvonne says AusRam Engineering has “Grown up” and they are looking forward to relocating to their new home which offers the potential for further growth.
And when it comes to her role, she’s confident that having a woman at the helm is a great move: “There’s nothing like a bit of feminine magic in a male-dominated industry to bring the sex appeal back to steel!” Contact AusRam on 07 5477 0200 or at admin@ausram.com.au to discuss your project needs. e www.mattersmagazine.com.au 21
STEPS CHARITY
IT MAKES GOOD BUSINESS SENSE TO PARTNER WITH A CHARITY For many businesses, partnering with a charity may seem like a task for the ‘too hard basket’. But that’s not the way a handful of successful Sunshine Coast companies, who have adopted a strategic ‘give back’ approach to business, view their partnership with STEPS Charity. STEPS Charity recently hosted a working lunch presented by Ken Mills Toyota dealer principal Brett Mills, with their partners Ben and Amanda Murphy from BA Murphy Constructions, Jim and Angela Lee from The Fleet Office and Nick and Lara from ARB Maroochydore to discuss, ‘why a business should give to a charity’.
22 ISSUE 92
They all advocate for a proactive ‘partnership’ approach when it comes to working with a charity and say it’s up to businesses to find a charity that aligns with their goals and culture to work together, for the mutual benefit of both parties. STEPS Charity managing director Carmel Crouch firmly believes a charity’s relationship with a sponsor is a two-way street. “It can’t be one-sided; businesses need more than just a warm fuzzy feeling at the end of the year. They need a return they can see in their budgets,” Carmel said. “It’s also about increased brand exposure and brand reputation, and this works both ways. “It needs to be an investment worth making. I have an obligation to make sure we as a charity are giving back to our partners.”
STEPS believes that providing businesses with unique opportunities to connect with the community and make a positive impact in the lives of others is a real benefit. Nick and Lara believe that when their business aligns with a charity they grow together, noting they had already seen the benefits to their staff engagement and view it as a win-win. Ben believes a real cultural shift has been happening with how businesses value charities, something that didn’t happen years ago, particularly in the construction industry. “We’ve seen lots of examples where the construction industry has partnered with industry on the Sunshine Coast with some truly amazing results for our community,” Ben said. “We wanted to get involved because we felt it was our responsibility to give back to the
community which has given us so much over the years.
ARB Maroochydore’s Nick and Lara, Brett Mills of Ken Mills Toyota, STEPS Group Australia Managing Director Carmel Crouch, BA Murphy Constructions’ Ben and Amanda, STEPS Charity Manager Angela Harrison and Jim and Angela from The Fleet Office.
“Corporate social responsibility has been a shift, just as digital disruption is making changes in the way we do business, and if businesses don’t progress with that shift, they’ll get left behind. “We’ve had calls from subcontractors looking to work with us because of the work we do in the community. They’re offering us better rates and supplies, they want to partner with us because of the work we do with STEPS, and I underestimated that initially. “We rely on 600 or 700 people to build one house; it works well for us to know how we can engage all these stakeholders. They may not like to go to a gala ball, but they do want to support our sponsored race day events, so a charity that can tailor a package to our needs works for us. “As a new business it also gives us brand placement in the broader community, and now people know who we are.” Brett believes the importance of the right type of partnership is paramount; he urges business owners to think about where they’re spending money in their business and if that money can be redirected to a charity to create a mutually profitable situation.
“You’re going to spend money on branding and exposure for your business anyway, so why not do that with a charity and benefit the community, too,” Brett said.
“The old way to think about it is to just donate to charity, but if you partner with a charity, making it beneficial for both parties, that’s a sustainable model. “When you take a not-for-profit organisation and add a for-profit organisation what you get is mutual benefit, I can’t agree with that more. “Charitable work brings together business people that have a similar mindset, that just
naturally fit together, and from that common thinking, business relationships are built and then leveraged,” he said Brett says if more businesses invested in charities, more would prosper, so would the community, and so would their businesses. Jim and Angela said they used to give to charity without any expectation on a return other than the benefit to the community, but after networking with other STEPS partners they believe that if their business prospers from giving to charity, then that provides even more opportunity to increase their partnership allowances. EMBRACING RETIREMENT AND SELLING
No-one works forever. Owning a business can be very demanding and this is doubly true for owner-operators. You may love your business but, sooner or later, you will have to step away and embrace retirement. If you have never sold a business before, you may not know what to expect. The good news is that most prospective buyers prefer to buy an established business from a business owner. However, you need to do everything you can to make the sale and transition period as easy as possible for the buyer.

WITH BRENDON MURRAY
Anyone who is in business knows there is no magical formula to success; it takes guts, determination and lots of hard work! Most people get into business because they are good at their job or want the freedom to make their own decisions, not necessarily because they are a good business person. So how do you fill the knowledge gap between doing what you do and running a successful business? You often hear the phrase, ‘you need to make the time to work on your business’. For most small business owners, the only ‘time’ available is usually after putting the kids to bed or in-between soccer games on the weekend.
That’s where a great accountant comes in.
• They can be your coach, your mentor, your sounding board or even your handbrake. • They can educate you on performance markers you should measure, so you know how your business is tracking. • They can work with you to put systems and processes in place to manage your business. • They can teach you to use software that will automate the financial aspects, so you have more time available doing what you do best. An accountant isn’t just there to do your tax; they are your partner in your business. They know your business as intimately as you and should be on the front foot to help you meet your goals, both professionally and financially. So, if your accountant only talks to you once a year when they do your tax return, then it’s time to look for someone who can offer you more. More importantly, it’s about finding someone with the right expertise that you can gel with. It could be one of the most significant relationships you ever form! ca www.bentleys.com.au

SING AND PLAY Parents are the first and most important teacher children will ever have and there are four important activities for success – talking, reading, singing and playing. Up to 90 per cent of a child’s brain development happens in the first five years. Parent involvement during this transformational period starts even before birth, as children listen to all the sounds around them. It’s important to let your child see your face when talking to them. Turn off the TV and other distracting devices so your child can focus. Play rhyming word games, use made-up and long words that add to their vocabulary. Just by talking about people, places and objects around you can have a huge impact on the development of their early literacy skills. Talk about the stories you read and ask questions that need more than a yes or no answer. Surround your child with books, magazines and pictures from birth. YOLANDIE RAISES THE BAR THE SKY IS THE LIMIT
TAFE Queensland graduate and mother-of-two Yolandie Weir is proof that when it comes to smashing your goals, the sky is the limit. Yolandie Weir is no stranger when it comes to hard work and determination. The 33-year-old single mother-of-two has spent the last 28 years as an elite athlete, during which she took out national championships in gymnastics, marathon kayaking and powerlifting, and achieved an all time world ranking of two in powerlifting. So when Yolandie decided it was time to share her passion with others and enrol in a Certificate IV in Fitness/Diploma of Sports Development (SIS40215/ SIS50612) dual qualification with TAFE Queensland, it didn’t take long for the high achiever to make great happen for both herself and the people she trains. Now, just four months after she graduated from TAFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba campus, Yolandie has been acknowledged for her outstanding study efforts, taking out the Fitness Australia Student of the Year Award at the 2019 Australian Fitness Awards in April.
“
The national award came as a surprise to the humble mother of two, who said she was honoured just to be made a finalist. “It was amazing just to be there — I sat next to people who have built very successful franchises and I got to pick their brains, which was unreal,” Yolandie said. “When they said my name, I looked at Mum and she looked back at me to check we’d heard correctly. I’ve made so many sacrifices to get to this point and there were times where I had an immense amount of self-doubt and considered putting my goals on hold. But with the support and encouragement of others I got through it, and it has been so worth it.
28 ISSUE 92
“This award is an acknowledgement of all that hard work. I wanted to set an example for my boys to never give up, and this just reinforces that I made the right choice.” It’s the second time that Yolandie's outstanding study efforts have been celebrated, with the high achiever also awarded Student of the Year at TAFE Queensland’s Sunshine Coast graduation in December last year. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think what I was doing would result in all this,” Yolandie said.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think what I was doing would result in all this.
”
While Yolandie still competes in boxing and Olympic weightlifting, she now has a new passion – helping others achieve their goals. She's also set her sights on eventually opening her own facility specialising in training people with chronic medical conditions. “I’ve started at uni studying a Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology, which I love, and I’m now working at Jamie Milne Training as a strength and conditioning and boxing for fitness coach,” Yolandie said.
“I also develop and oversee their kids program which has provided an exciting opportunity for me to take the best of all my training experiences from several different sports and combine them in one program. “In addition to that, I’m training my own clients; many of them are actually people I met during my training assessment at TAFE Queensland who have continued to train with me. “It’s been an incredibly busy few months, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.” TAFE Queensland offers a huge range of qualifications across a variety of study areas, including fitness, so why wait to make great? Enrol now for Semester 2 of 2019 today and see where TAFE can take you. Call 1300 308 233 or visit our website at tafeqld.edu.au.

YOUR MOVE FITNESS
ACTIVE, HEALTHY AND
HAPPY TEENS
WITH JODIE MARRIOTT AND ROD JONES
Our young people have many demands on their time, so finding time to be active can be a challenge. Physical activity keeps teenage bodies and minds fit and healthy. During adolescence, your child needs at least 60 minutes of activity every day. WHY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS IMPORTANT?
School sport isn’t always enough, and your child may not get all the physical activity they need in physical education (HPE) classes or from running around at lunchtime. Here in South East Queensland, we live in an environment rich in choices to keep our kids physically active. There are so many quality organisations that cater to teen and pre-teen sport.
Being active every day can help: • Improve heart health and fitness • Develop strong muscles, bones and good posture • Maintain a healthy weight
It is totally appropriate for your teens and pre-teens to begin gym-based activities, from age-appropriate resistance training to group classes. Fitness centres today are often social hubs and great places to enjoy some time with your kids whilst you both benefit. The better fitness centres have fitness professionals on staff who have the right qualifications and experience to help your children explore their opportunities and be active, safely. ca
• Improve concentration and memory • Learn new skills • Increase self-confidence • Reduce stress • Make and keep friendships • Improve sleep Physical activity should be performed at a moderate or vigorous level to achieve health benefits.

CREDIT SCORES Would you like to understand what lenders think of your credit score, what goes into calculating it in the first place, and how you can protect and improve your credit score in today’s lending environment? Here is our helpful guide to let you know where you stand. WHAT IS IT? Your credit score is a three-digit number between zero and 1200 that relates to how likely you are to repay debt. Banks and lenders use it to decide whether they’ll approve you for a credit card or loan. WHAT’S A GOOD CREDIT SCORE? The higher your score, the less likely it is that you have had an adverse credit event recorded on your file. Lenders view this as a lower risk. The lower your credit score, the higher risk you will appear as a potential borrower. Most lenders also apply their own lending criteria, so having an experienced loan consultant in your corner is imperative. The more enquiries you make on your file (the more applications you make), the lower your score can become. You want to ensure you are applying to the best lender the first time, which requires some professional knowledge. HOW IS YOUR CREDIT SCORE CALCULATED? Type of credit provider; There may be different levels of risk when approaching different lenders. The size of credit requested: Both the type and size of the loan or credit limit you are requesting can affect your score. For example, mortgages have a different level of risk compared to credit cards. The number of credit enquiries: Every time you apply for a credit product, the credit provider obtains a copy of your file and the application is noted. If you shop around for credit, it flags you as a higher risk. Directorship information: If you’re a director or proprietor, it may impact your credit score so it’s important to check both the individual and commercial sections of your credit file. Age of credit file: The date your credit file was created. A new file may indicate a different level of risk compared to an older file. For example, if you are 45-years-old and applying for credit for the first time, the lender may think you’re applying under a new name, as it’s unusual for someone to go through life without touching their credit file. Personal details: Your age, length of employment and how long you’ve lived at your current address. Default information: Things like overdue debts or serious credit infringements could negatively affect your credit score. Court writs: Default judgements or court writs may negatively impact your score. GUIDE TO CREDIT SCORE RANGES: Below average to average (0-509). Lenders view people in this range
as more likely to have an adverse event being recorded on their file in the next 12 months. You are in the bottom 20 per cent of the credit-active population. Average (510-621). If your credit score falls in this range, some lenders will still consider you a risk. Your score places you in the bottom 21-40 per cent of the credit-active population. Good (622-725). People within this range are less likely to have an adverse event in the next 12 months. You fall in the mid-range (41-60 per cent) of the credit-active population. Very good (726-832). Most lenders believe customers with a credit score in this range are unlikely to have a negative event recorded on their credit file within the next 12 months. Your score places you in the second-highest range of the credit-active population (61-80 per cent). Excellent (833-1200). The odds of no adverse events occurring on your credit file in the next 12 months are five times better than the population average. You are in the top percentile range (81-100 per cent).

HOW TO UNDERSTAND
SUNCENTRAL
GREEN LIGHT
FOR $30 MILLION ENERGY-EFFICIENT OFFICE COMPLEX Construction will soon start on the first building to be approved in SunCentral’s new Maroochydore CBD. Sunshine Coast-based Evans Long received the green light from Economic Development Queensland for its Foundation Place building, which will be a $30 million energy-efficient office complex. The eight-level project will be the first building on the Sunshine Coast to have a Five Star-rating under the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS). Its environmentally-sustainable features will include a green wall, solar panels, energy-efficient lighting and low VOC materials. SunCentral CEO John Knaggs said the design of Foundation Place was in line with the vision for the CBD to be a dynamic city centre. “Right from the start, we’ve wanted to offer a place on the Sunshine Coast where people can do business in an environment that is clean, green and high tech,” he said. “The Foundation Place building will be a great example of this, and we are really looking forward to watching this first building emerge from the ground in the new Maroochydore CBD.”
In recent months, Habitat Development Group also lodged its application with Economic Development Queensland to build an $83 million residential project in the CBD. It will deliver 152 units, as well as six townhomes known as SOHOs. The new Maroochydore CBD is expected to also benefit after the Sunshine Coast was recognised within the South East Queensland City Deal plan. The Federal Government’s City Deals are a partnership with local government to identify priority locations where the focus will be on economic growth, jobs, and housing, reduced travel times and better environmental outcomes. Of the six transformational opportunities highlighted in South East Queensland, the Sunshine Coast featured prominently. ca maroochydore-city.com.au

IS IT ENTICING?
Websites are integral to the sustained growth and maintenance of any business. They function as storefronts. They function as customer service centres. They function as contacts and PR agents and galleries and everything else your business could want. The website is so important to businesses that they have become synonymous with them. You assume a business has a website. And you assume a certain level of quality and modern design, whether consciously or subconsciously. You use the website as proof of product. If you turned up for a job interview in an outdated and poorly fitting suit with muddy shoes and shaggy hair you wouldn’t get the job. Out-dated, slow or otherwise poorly made websites don’t generate leads. Bad websites suffocate your business. Websites are so important. And they aren’t new: It isn’t 1992 anymore. But in our line of business, we see so many people who underestimate the productive power of a good website and, worse yet, underestimate the destructive power of a bad one.
There are tools to help you build your websites. Or at least to give you a false sense of security as you flail in the dark. A lot of people build their own websites in Wix, Square Space or even give WordPress a go. But templates and YouTube videos do not an expert make.
If someone opens your website, you have three seconds… That’s it: three seconds to get their attention. There’s a science to it. In fact, companies spend far too much money doing research into psychology just to ensure that their websites are as effective as possible, drawing you in with the right colours, shapes and page layouts, font size, font style and deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole. The words you use. Hard and short blocks or soft elongated paragraphs? The words have texture in mind; they build rhythm and draw the eyes where you want them. It’s science. It’s art. It’s web design. Rhythm, flow and design know-how are not something that comes in a template. They are things that professionals learn in order to make websites that are truly effective and truly unique. So, sign up for Square Space. Sign up for Wix or create a WordPress account and delve in. But always remember that you get what you pay for. And quality counts. All of it is being judged on a microcosmic scale without the judges even realising it. NO PRESSURE. As I said, websites aren’t a new thing. They also aren’t old. They are ever evolving. Morphing, shapeshifting, living things with personalities. And they need the right hands to mould them for them to be productive.
Are you up to the task?

TSHOPBIZ GROUP
Customer SERVICE, CUSTOMER experience, Customer SATISFACTION
Now that’s MAGIC Have you ever dreamed of getting the personalised service of a local business, backed by the capabilities of a large national organisation? Now, you can have the best of both for your ICT needs at TShopBiz Group. TShopBiz Group is committed to providing personal service and building long-term customer relationships. They do this by ensuring local points of presence, so customers can access the team face-to-face; they have stores located at Caloundra, Birtinya, Kawana and Nambour. EXCEPTIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE Kris Carver, CEO of TShopBiz Group and Entag, points out that great service starts from the first contact with their concierge, who is dedicated to greeting customers, getting an understanding of the reason for their visit and showing them to the best consultant for their needs. Customer contact is maintained after the visit to ensure the service is working as expected and to provide further local support. “The company’s Tech Bar services offer tutorials, device set-up, antivirus set-up and many other troubleshooting and rectification services,” Kris says.
“Our team takes ownership of the issue and we help them with resources dedicated to finding the best options for our customers. We don’t always get it right, but we will always aim to find a resolution.” TShopBiz Group’s customers include everyone from parents getting their children’s first mobile phone, to small business customers setting up shop, to enterprise and 38 ISSUE 92
government clients needing large-scale solutions tailored to their operations. What remains consistent is the TShopBiz Group’s solution-based sales process. Their teams take the time to understand every customer’s needs and match them with world-leading products and services backed by Telstra. “A first-time mobile user will get set up and leave the store with a fully working phone – we know that is what they want, and what they need,” Kris says. “For larger customers and more complicated solutions, the goal is exactly the same, just a different time-frame.” Their solutions include the latest hardware, leading media and entertainment, apps and professional services, through to training, installation and implementation of solutions. GREAT PEOPLE TShopBiz Group has invested in its people to develop and certify them as experts in products from world-leading providers like Apple, Samsung, Microsoft and Cisco Meraki. “We recruit team members with a real passion for helping customers get true value from their ICT products and services,” Kris says. They also have a dedicated local call centre that customers can call for after-sales service and support. LOCALS SUPPORTING LOCALS A long-time local, Kris is passionate about the Sunshine Coast and excited about its future. Following study at UQ and the University of the Sunshine Coast, Kris spent 20 years in the ICT industry. Now CEO of TShopBiz
Group and Entag, Kris says, “It is amazing to lead a team of dedicated professionals on the Sunshine Coast with a clear vision to offer opportunities in ICT for talented locals.” Since being established in 2004, the business has been 100 per cent owned and operated by a passionate group of Sunshine Coast locals who are committed to providing the best in customer experience with their exceptional teams. Having convenient, friendly locations from Caloundra to Maroochydore to Nambour makes it easy for customers to come and sit down with one of the team, Kris says. “Our number (1300 881 800) is answered locally for ongoing service and support and we ensure that you leave our stores with either a physical or digital business card with information to be able to contact us directly.” CONSTANTLY EVOLVING As industry and customer needs change, the business is evolving to meet them. They have had several store relocations and expansions to help best serve their customers. Over the next 12 to 18 months, they are investing in the latest fit-outs designed to give an even better customer experience. Other popular initiatives have included the introduction of business specialists, Tech Bar services and a concierge. “These have greatly improved how we operate,” Kris says. “Telstra’s strategy will make the services we offer a lot simpler, allowing our team to be better customer experts rather than system experts.”
Telstra continues to invest in their mobile network to make certain that customers get great coverage and speeds. This investment also ensures new technologies – like 5G and IoT (Internet of Things) – are accessible for all Telstra customers. “IoT – the linking of everyday items – will be a game-changer for the way we interact and live as well as have huge benefits in healthcare, ageing populations and transport,” Kris says. With regards to the NBN, it has launched in most areas of the Sunshine Coast, with only a limited number of areas left, Kris says. “Most customers on the Coast should have access to NBN and I encourage you to come and see one of our team to check availability, technology type available and start the process of placing an order.”
WHY CHOOSE TELSTRA? Kris says they commonly receive remarks about pricing, but as with anything in technology, you get what you pay for. “In saying that, I simply ask you to check out our prices and see if they are what you thought they were.” “Telstra is investing heavily to ensure you not only have the best network today but also access to future 5G and other tech evolutions by an organisation with a DNA for innovation. Staying ahead of your competition and getting a competitive advantage through your ICT investment is crucial to success and Telstra combined with our team can make that happen for you.” If that doesn’t convince you, Kris says you should talk to one of their customers. “Like any business, we don’t always get it right, but we aim to. The core of our success is the ambition to continuously improve and provide an experience that will keep customers returning and referring others.” a
“We want each of our customers to feel that they are in the right place – we get them, we offered the right solution and the experience was great.”

CRAIG LEVITT COACHING
50 REASONS
TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS WITH CRAIG LEVITT
This was the title of the first organically sourced post on Google when I recently searched, ‘why start your own business’. Are you thinking, 50 reasons? You must be kidding! Whoever wrote that ought to come and work in my business for a day!
Pressure is often viewed as a negative force in our lives, bringing with it stress and turmoil, yet the same pressure can be seen as an amazing opportunity to do some of your best work. In those moments when the odds appear stacked against you and the stakes are high, you can delight in rising to the challenge and prevailing, making the victory so much more enjoyable. Pressure tests your character and resolve, tests your vision, tests your flexibility to adapt and tests your drive to succeed.
PRESSURE changes. Add in sales pressure, debtor pressure, cash flow pressure, supplier pressure, staff pressure and competitor pressure. It all rises, often appearing to do so all at the same time.
My tips for surviving the pressure: 1. Never lose sight of your vision and goals 2. Focus your mind on what’s working 3. Always be curious looking for another way to do it 4. K eep talking to other people, other business owners, mentors, coaches etc ook after your health, it’s your foundation to cope with everything 5. L else going on around you. ca

ACCOUNTING MATTERS
END OF FINANCIAL YEAR WRAP-UP
GET IT RIGHT AND WATCH THE MAGIC HAPPEN BY SHAREE WEBSTER, CA DIRECTOR, HOLMANS ACCOUNTING & TAXATION
This is the best time of year to look at tax forecasting, strategic planning and tax reduction strategies. Bringing forward some tax decisions, and deferring others, can create magic for your business and put you on a firm footing for the 2020 financial year. You should be looking at your expected taxable income for the current financial year and your projected/expected taxable income for the next financial year. Reviewing year-to-date results and considering next financial year results will assist your tax planning strategy. Here are some tax changes that will impact your end-offinancial-year: • NEW THRESHOLD! Immediate deductibility for the purchase of small business assets Small businesses can immediately deduct the business portion of most assets if they cost less than $30,000 and were purchased between 7.30pm on 2 April 2019 and 30 June 2019. This deduction applies to new or second-hand assets, in the year the asset was first used or installed ready for use. Assets purchased prior to 2 April 2019 still qualify for the immediate deduction. Check with the ATO website for the different thresholds available during the year Check with your tax adviser how the asset may impact on your cash

flow or finances in the short-term and make the decision based on the needs of your business, not the tax savings. • Single Touch Payroll (STP) – Starting 1 July 2019 for businesses with fewer than 19 employees STP is an electronic method for providing the ATO with real-time payroll data at the time employees are paid. Remember, your employees’ tax and super information will be sent to the ATO each time you run your payroll and pay your employees. There is still time to put in place a cloud accounting to deal with the requirement. • Concessional contributions cap – what can you claim in the 2019 financial year The concessional contributions cap is $25,000 for everyone. If you are employed, you can make personal deductible contributions to your super fund in after-tax dollars – please consider your employer contributions as you can’t exceed the $25,000 concessional cap. Always contact your superfund directly to ensure you are
completing the correct forms before depositing any funds. Otherwise, you may end up contributing funds in a manner unfavourable to your tax situation.
related part as a tax deduction. Not sure whether you can claim a particular item? Keep the receipt and ask your tax accountant at tax time.
CLAIM EVERYTHING YOU ARE ALLOWED AS A TAX DEDUCTION
As always remember, when it comes to the end of the financial year – get organised prior to 30 June and roll into 2020 financial year well prepared and informed.
In general, if you have to spend money on anything that relates to ‘earning your income’, make sure you claim it. Even if you purchase an item partly for work and partly for personal use, you can still claim the work-
Magic! P.S. Post-election there could be new tax policies in place. Some will need to be considered prior to 30 June 2019 to ensure your best tax outcome. m

FIRE UP COACHING
IT’S 2019: ARE YOUR LEADERS SKILLED COACHES AND MENTORS?
When a hospital CEO incorporated a Married at First Sight clip, along with a scene from The Office into their presentation at a leadership forum earlier this year, the audience was immediately engaged. I watched as the CEO demonstrated the kind of supportive leadership that builds a culture of trust. She used humour well to highlight what happens when you’re not present in a conversation and only thinking of yourself, and the laughter generated great energy and openness in the room.
Jacinda Ardern’s recent act of courageous leadership in horrendous circumstances is a prime example of how a quality leader can steer daring conversations, while both demonstrating and managing emotion simultaneously. She wasn’t turning on compassion for the cameras; she is compassionate. So, how do we prepare our business managers to lead positively and with the willing participation of their team?
How do we prepare our leaders to have courageous conversations and to manage their emotions?
As the person following her to facilitate a workshop for the leaders, her presentation offered a role model for the powerful impact an emotionally intelligent leader can have. It makes it easier to teach people when learning is encouraged and valued.
The answer lies in building leadership capability in emotional intelligence, coaching and mentoring.
The challenge that leaders in any business face is how to disrupt the kind of thinking that fosters an organisational culture of judgement and prejudice.
A recent whitepaper by Korn Ferry on the impact of leadership styles on organisational climate found that a coaching style enhanced a positive, engaged organisation culture by 50 per cent. Developing a coaching culture has been shown to improve communication by 63 per cent, team effectiveness by 68 per cent, self-esteem by 29 per cent and performance management by 77 per cent. ca

SAVE MONEY:
GET THE GOVERNMENT REBATE BEFORE IT DISAPPEARS BY VICKIE MAGIC
Wholesale Solar began in February 2018. It was the brainchild of Bret Davis, who had been involved in the solar industry on the Sunshine Coast for the previous 10 years. He helped a large Chinese manufacturer to get started in Australia and it was during that time that Bret realised just how much need there was for someone to take on the challenge of bringing solar to both businesses and homes at a wholesale rate, effectively cutting out the middle man. Bret says, “Most of our clients are absolutely shocked at what they can save when they buy through us. Most people don’t realise just how much the Government is still funding solar, right here on the Coast. Lots thought they had missed the boat, but the truth is that almost everyone qualifies for around $4,000. All you have to do is be the electricity account holder, even if you have an old system you can upgrade and still get the rebate.” 44 ISSUE 92
Bret and his team do all the work. They do the application for the funding and all the running around; you just sit back, relax and let it happen. And it can be completely done in less than a day, saving most households up to around $15,000 and businesses up to $50,000 a year. That’s pretty awesome.
ANOTHER AWESOME POINT OF DIFFERENCE WITH WHOLESALE SOLAR IS THAT THEY SUPPLY ALL BRANDS OF SOLAR PRODUCTS AT A WHOLESALE PRICE AND FULLY INSTALLED. For the company that survives almost entirely on referrals, Bret said, “We are all about a bargain and great customer service. We survive on customer referrals, so we make sure the client is satisfied; that’s our priority. “Paying for electricity these days is just dead money.”
Bret recommends jumping in while the government is still handing out money. To be honest, after writing this article, I called Wholesale Solar and got my own solar panel on my roof. I am looking forward to saving up to $700 a quarter off my bill. The job was done so smoothly and quickly, Brett (not Bret) and the boys were in and out in no time and I was able to start saving from day one. e For more information or a quote, text Solar to +61 417 586 545 www.wholesale-solar.com.au

WORDS MEAN BUSINESS
What on earth is a COPYWRITER?
WITH SOPHIA AULD
I’m so glad you asked! When I tell people I’m a copywriter, they frequently think I deal with the laws about protecting created material. That work is the domain of copyright. Copywriters, in contrast, are the creative individuals who work magic with words. They craft written content for advertising, marketing and descriptive texts. If you’ve read a superinformative brochure or heard a catchy ad jingle, you’ve experienced the work of the copywriter.
A copywriter’s goal is to weave words that inspire people to act. Often, that will be buying a product or service but can include things like signing up to receive a business newsletter, subscribe to a blog or visit a website. Depending on your marketing goals, copywriters can write various types of compelling text suited to different mediums, including video scripts, TV jingles and web copy that’s optimised for SEO. Here are some of the top things you might use a copywriter to help with: 1. WEB PAGES: Is your website a pleasure for visitors to engage with, or is it sending them to sleep? I wrote about websites in the last issue, but a key point is that users judge them in as little as 3.42 seconds, so it’s vital to make a great first impression. Copy that is clear and compelling shows potential customers why YOUR business is the best for meeting their needs. Copy that is optimised for SEO also helps you to achieve better organic search 50 ISSUE 92
rankings. Combine great copy with stunning images and strong back-end work by a web developer and voila, you’ll have a website that does what you want it to. 2. BLOGS, SOCIAL POSTS AND ARTICLES: Content marketing is relatively new in Australia but is increasingly used by brands to build their audiences. A recent trend is a shift from creating product and brand-led content to customer-first content. Delivering regular, quality content that your target audience wants to receive – whether that’s through blogs, articles or social posts – not only helps to build your subscriber base, but also to establish trust and loyalty to your business. Consistency is critical, so think about what is sustainable for you long-term. If you’re too busy doing other stuff, a copywriter can do this for you, helping with everything from brainstorming ideas to content creation and scheduling. 3. CASE STUDIES: Has your business done something awesome? Perhaps won a great contract, an industry award or gone above and beyond in solving a challenging problem for a client? Maybe your staff just do a wonderful job every day without making a fuss. Writing up a case study gives potential clients a concrete example of how your business has achieved an outcome or managed a problem. You can use them on your website, in local media, and in work portfolios. 4. STAFF PROFILES: People prefer doing business with people they know and trust. Adding some life and personality to your staff profiles helps customers feel like they know you. A copywriter can craft words that convey the type of impression you want to make, whether it’s ultra-professional, laid-back, friendly, expert, or anything else. These can be used on your website, social media channels, LinkedIn profiles and so on.
5. EBOOKS: These sometimes-overlooked marketing tools are a great way for businesses to promote their expertise, show thought leadership and, most importantly, generate new leads. Most often, you’ll see them offered for free download in exchange for an email address, which can be added to your list for future marketing campaigns. But even a free eBook needs to represent value, otherwise, people are unlikely to download it. A compelling title, short extracts and testimonials from people who’ve read your book can all encourage people to click ‘download now’. A copywriter can write an eBook that’s engaging to read and showcases your expertise, and the words that show customers the life-changing value of reading it! Fringe benefit: eBook content on your website is another way to improve organic search rankings.
Once they’re written, you can use them on your website, brochure, EDM campaigns and so on. 8. NEWSLETTERS: Maybe you’ve got a great email list, but are you making the most of it? A regular newsletter puts your business in front of people, well, regularly! But it won’t achieve much if nobody reads it, so the headline needs to make people want to open it (without sounding like click-bait). The content should connect with readers, provide useful information and keep them coming back. A copywriter can help you craft a newsletter that forges connections with customers and builds loyalty to your business. Use them to introduce new staff, highlight promotions, make special offers and announce new products and services.
6. BROCHURES/FLYERS: Every business needs a company flyer that highlights who they are and what they offer. A copywriter can get your message across in compelling words. A great one can do it in few words – without sacrificing crucial information – so there’s plenty of room for graphics and images.
Professional copywriters craft compelling words that inspire action. Contact me to discuss creating copy to capture your unique voice and tell your story.
7. PRODUCT AND SERVICE DESCRIPTIONS: Want to make it easy for customers to understand what you offer and why they should choose you? Clear, concise descriptions bring your products and services to life.

NUMBERS BUSINESS
Magic... THE SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF! BY TED FITZGERALD
As much as I enjoy working with ‘numbers’, I am also fascinated with the power of PURE MAGIC. For me, it’s feelings and passion that are at the source of the most magical experiences.
52 ISSUE 92
Philosopher David Hume observed, “Reason is the servant of the passions”. I agree. In my experience, a combination of instinct, heart, various bodily appetites, your wallet/purse and a need for security will guide most of our actions. When one or more of these desires have been satisfied, the mind (reason) is brought in to deal with the consequences, both good and bad.
Passion doesn’t just stimulate the various physical desires; when put to work, it can drive you past ALL obstacles or difficulties to achieve a goal in business, sports or education. So, if you are ever told, ‘you will never achieve that’, remember when you harness the immense power of passion and determination, ‘pure magic’ is possible.
For many years, economics was taught as a ‘rational’ science, and it was assumed all purchase decisions were made in a rational way. Slowly, ‘behavioural economics’ is gaining the upper hand to better understand what motivates a purchase decision. In many countries, the measurement of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is being replaced by a measurement of GDH (Gross Domestic Happiness). It’s feelings that create magic, not reason.
Finally, a story of my first experience with magic. As a kid raised on a farm near Texas (Queensland) and born in 1939, my introduction to what seemed to be magic was when I was five years old. We lived through World War II with the presence on the roads of many convoys of military personnel, particularly Americans. As the War was ending and more civilian movement was possible, the family drove to Brisbane to see my Grandmother. As a special treat, we drove down to Shorncliffe. Until then the largest waterway I had seen was a 10-metre-wide river on the farm boundary. So, as I stood on the Shorncliffe headland looking east over Moreton Bay to this large strip of land on the horizon – namely Moreton Island - I said to my parents, “Wow MAGIC!! Now I’ve seen America!” ca

ST. ANDREW’S ANGLICAN COLLEGE
OUT OF THE CLASSROOM AND INTO THE WORLD:
YEAR 9 CONNECTIONS PROGRAM GIVES STUDENTS REAL-LIFE MAGICAL EXPERIENCES Pure, life-changing learning happens when middle schoolers at St Andrew’s Anglican College step out of the classroom and into the world. Thanks to the college’s unique Connections Program, St Andrew’s Year 9 students get to experience life from a different perspective embarking on week-long, off-campus academic experiences to Brisbane, Melbourne and Stradbroke Island.
situations which enables them to think about complex ideas such as beliefs, values, culture, politics and the economy,” Mr Harding said. “At the beginning of the trip students are quick to make judgements, but by the end, they’re not so sure. For example, the question of whether mining should be allowed on the island; at first, they say ‘No.’ Then we factor in jobs, the economy and tourism along with the first-hand stories of Indigenous people. By the end of the trip, they’ve heard many sides of the debate and they realise it’s not as clear-cut as they thought.”
St Andrew’s teacher Jonathan Harding says the trips are strategically timed to help students maintain their focus and interest for the whole year. “The cohort is split into three groups, travelling to either Melbourne, Brisbane or North Stradbroke Island for a week-long experience and then rotating to another location in Terms 2 and 3,” Mr Harding explained. “Each experience presents students with real-world problems to examine and explore.”
The Connections Program is an integral part of St Andrew’s Year 9 curriculum which embodies deep academic learning, cultural insight, independence, social and personal challenge, community-mindedness, adventure and celebration. From assisting with a soup van for the homeless in Melbourne to hearing presentations by Indigenous Elders on Stradbroke Island, the trips are all about real world, real-life experiences that sow seeds for the future. “When students go to Melbourne and Brisbane, they’re getting exposure to the urban life in a way they aren’t usually, such as crowds of business-people going to work, or homeless on the street,” Mr Harding said. “We’re good at sheltering our children at home, but when we take them to the city that kind of stuff is impossible to hide. They get real experiences which help them build independence, confidence and empathy.” The multicultural experience is further enhanced on the North Stradbroke Island trip where students listen to presentations by Indigenous Elders from the Quandamooka People. “Students are presented with questions and topics of discussion on unfamiliar
‘St Andrews Melbourne Excursion Group’
Along with developing greater cultural awareness and honing their critical thinking skills, the Connections Program provides a unique opportunity for Year 9s to leave their bubble and try new things in unfamiliar environments. Mr Harding says parents often comment on how life-changing the trips are for their child, with an increase in confidence being the number one change they see. “It is really a powerful program giving middle schoolers first-hand experience outside the classrooms where they discover new opportunities, gain independence and learn to consider others.” ca www.saac.qld.edu.au

A MENTOR, A TRAINER AND A COACH? BY VICKIE MAGIC
A MENTOR… is someone that imparts wisdom on a subject they have the wisdom on. So basically, they teach others about something they know more about. They advise on things that the mentee would not have knowledge about. A TRAINER… facilitates training, either one on one or for a group. This training can be on something that is already known, or could be something brand new, it’s giving tips and tricks and tools for the easiest ways to do things and potentially to entice and excite the trainee towards the best and most productive results. A COACH… on the other hand, is very different, I believe everyone needs a coach. A coach can empower you to uncover the wisdom and potential that you already have within you. They ask you questions that only you have the answers to. They don’t give you the answers, in fact they facilitate you finding them. And when you do find them for yourself, your level of ownership of the answers, your level of commitment towards fulfilling your desires and your dreams is doubled or even tripled. It’s important that a coach does not come up with advice for you to solve your
challenge, but rather that they come up with the questions to empower you to find the solutions for yourself.
This is a great learning as a parent or a friend too, we are often quick to TELL others what they should or shouldn’t do, but when we sit back and ask questions that help others find their own answers, we empower them towards SUCCESS and CONFIDENCE. CONFIDENCE that they actually truly do have all that they need within them to be all that they ever want to be. c www.mydestinydesigner.com.au

WITH KNOWLEDGE WITH BEAU SMALL
The benefits of getting a professional involved early in the process. Are you planning on building a home? Or reinvigorating your company’s interior? Or tackling a commercial construction project? Q: When should you call your builder or shopfitter? It’s a question that is often overlooked but quite easily answered. A: As early as possible! Through years of experience, we have found that the earlier we can become involved in a project, the more positive influence we can have on its cost, performance and outcomes. As a project moves closer towards completion, the cost of implementing change increases significantly. We’ve found that when we are involved in the project right from the planning stage, we can foresee the significant challenges that may lie ahead. This foresight allows us to plan and manoeuvre your project around those challenges and achieve a positive outcome. To all our current and prospective clients, we offer the opportunity to discuss their project on-site with our team as early as possible. If you’re leasing a property, then we encourage a ‘Pre-Lease Assessment’ that allows us to look at the potential challenges that exist within each space. If you’re planning to buy, then we recommend you take a professional into the premises prior to beginning your negotiation process.
The more knowledge you can arm yourself with during the early stages, the more prepared you’ll be for the challenges that come along with the building. ca P: 07 5319 3068 | www.coopersmall.com.au

STUDENTS WITH A DISABILITY
GRADUATE TO A LIFE OF INDEPENDENCE STEPS Pathways College recently celebrated its inaugural graduation ceremony, with five students reaching their goal of learning the skills to live independently in the community. STEPS managing director Carmel Crouch said it was one of the proudest days in her 30 years at the helm of STEPS. “This milestone is a wonderful achievement for the whole community, made possible through the collaboration of so many people. I feel that we can all be proud as we witness our first group of students set out for life as confident, educated and informed young adults,” she said.
Graduates Tom Amarena and Ariana Nioa said they were both more excited than nervous about their recent graduation and what lies ahead. “I am a bit shy, but that’s the kind of person I am, but since being at STEPS, I’m not as nervous,” said Ariana. She said she’s looking forward to moving in with fellow classmate, Alana, after they both graduate, and working in office administration on the Sunshine Coast. “I want to be independent out in the community and get a job. I like budgeting, cooking and researching recipes,” she said. Since opening in 2016, the college has seen considerable growth and now supports nine students in its day program and eight in the boarding program, with plans for future expansion now on the horizon. STEPS Pathways College manager DJ McGlynn said the flexible learning environment was a big drawcard for many young people with a disability and their families. Ariana’s advice to others thinking about enrolling at STEPS Pathways College is to “be confident and come look at the program”. To find out more about STEPS Pathways College contact 5458 3000. e

FOR GRANTED
Sunday 3 March was World Hearing Day and the start of Hearing Awareness Week. In this article, Kendall Morton shares some suggestions about preventing and living with hearing loss. HOW COMMON IS HEARING LOSS? Over 17 per cent of Australians have a hearing loss and this figure is growing as our population ages. Newspoll surveyed 1000 people aged 60 and over; over half of them reported having a hearing problem. Interestingly, men are more susceptible than women. IS HEARING LOSS A NORMAL PART OF AGEING? No, it is not. Most hearing loss is preventable. We need to start protecting our hearing like we do our skin. Once you have the hearing loss, the damage is done. HOW CAN YOU AVOID OR LIMIT HEARING LOSS? Two major preventable causes are exposure to loud sounds and ototoxic medications. Your ears can be damaged by loud sounds that occur once, repeatedly or over a long period of time. Your ears do not have to hurt for damage to occur and, like sun damage to your skin, the damage is cumulative. Sounds over 85 decibels (dB) can lead to permanent hearing loss. The Healthy Hearing website has a review of apps that help you measure decibels. Day-to-day hazards include city traffic noise, lawnmower noise, motorbike noise, a loud vacuum cleaner, woodworking tools plus music or television played at a high volume. You can limit your exposure to loud noises by using good quality earmuffs or earplugs for some tasks. Ear muffs sit over the ears and are more convenient, but not as effective as ear plugs, which sit in the ear canal. YOU MENTIONED DRUGS? Yes, some medicines can impair your hearing. These are called ototoxic drugs. Their side effects can include tinnitus, hearing loss, balance problems and phantom sounds. They can damage the fragile hair cells in your inner ear or affect the nerve supply to your ears.
Ototoxic drugs include: • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen • Certain antibiotics, including aminoglycosides • Certain cancer medications • Water pills and diuretics • Quinine-based medications This is just an overview, so check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any concerns. HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT A LOVED ONE WITH A HEARING LOSS? You can help by facing the person you are speaking to and getting their attention before you give your message. Also, use physical props such as the teacup when you are offering to make a cuppa. WHAT ARE THE IMPACTS OF HEARING LOSS? Hearing loss can cause a communication breakdown leading to anger, irritability, isolation and depression. WHAT IS THE IMPACT ON SPOUSES AND CARERS WHEN SOMEONE HAS A HEARING LOSS? It can be isolating when you don’t feel your loved one is hearing you. Encourage the person with the hearing loss to test out some modern hearing aids. They are small and discreet. Good hearing aids can help you or your loved one regain some confidence and independence. m

Eating for Peak Performance With the proper fuel balance, our bodies can achieve peak performance, maximum potential and longevity! Eating can be such a pleasure. However, what we eat can determine much about our personality, our physical, emotional and mental health, and our potential in life. While there are other contributing factors such as exercise, rest, temperance and various lifestyle practices, the food we choose to eat on a regular basis will ultimately define our shape, stamina and disposition. If we are planning to produce children, our pre-conception habits will impact the lives of our descendants. A tree planted in nutrient-rich soil will produce quality fruit. A tree planted in nutrient-deficient soil will produce poor quality fruit or no fruit at all. It is the same with humans. Our soils have been farmed to exhaustion and are now mostly dependent on artificial fertilisers. Processed and refined foods dominate our supermarkets. Our hospitals are generally full. Pharmaceutical companies prevail. Cancer is a plague. Childhood cancer is now the second most common cause of death in 1-14 year-olds. It is not as easy to thrive in the current world as it was a generation ago. If we aspire to produce healthy children, enjoy peak performance and achieve longevity, we must maximise our nutrition while minimising our exposure to toxins.
Food basically consists of three categories, ie Protein, Fats and Carbohydrates. The most essential is protein. The word, ‘protein’ is actually a plural word, referring to twenty two different amino acids – all individual nutrients. On entering the stomach, these amino acids are broken up, processed and combined with other substances to produce a multitude of compounds that basically support every organ and system in our bodies. The label on a product containing only one amino acid in a significant amount will state that the product contains protein, whereas most of the essential amino acids are not present. Complete proteins are found in animal products such as eggs, chicken, red meats, fish and dairy products. Proteins are responsible for growth, repair, maintenance and most physical and mental functions. In 1992, the Bordeaux University determined that the minimum proteins required daily should be calculated by subtracting 100 from a person’s height in centimetres. This will give the number of grams of protein required daily for optimal health. A physically active person would need more. Most meats comprise 25% protein. An egg has seven grams while most dairy products range from 12% to 20%. Adequate protein can be helpful in the management of depression, as the amino acid, L-Tryptophan enhances the production of serotonin, the mood regulator. Inadequate dietary protein can adversely affect cognitive function, healing, hormonal balance, sleep and growth in children. Fats are also important for optimal health. The Fat Family as a whole has been black-listed as public enemy number one since the mid 1900’s. However there are fats that heal and fats that kill. The good fats include coconut, olive and other quality cold pressed oils, butter, cheeses, eggs and the fat on organic meats. Even chicken skin has great nutritional value. The Bordeaux University studies concluded that fat consumption should be 2.5 times that of protein. That sounds high, but the French have the lowest death rate from heart attack, cardiovascular disease and stroke in the world. Symptoms related to fat deficiency include aching joints, attention deficit, anxiety, cognitive problems, constipation, coarse hair, cracked heels, eczema, irritability and immune dysfunction.
62 ISSUE 92
The brain has a mechanism to warn us when we have eaten enough protein and fat. We feel satisfied. However carbohy-drates can make a full person feel hungry again. After a huge birthday lunch of meat and vegetables, grandma brings out the sweets. You are full, but decide to try one spoonful. Suddenly, you can eat the whole bowl and maybe seconds too! What happened! This food group requires self-control. A diet low in fat leaves a person feeling dissatisfied. Hence, one gravitates to carbohydrates. This is not ideal if we want to achieve peak performance. Carbohydrate foods include grains, sugars, legumes, fruits and certain vegetables.
“
The French studies recommend that carbohydrate consumption should be kept to 80% of protein intake.
”
It is far more efficient to derive one’s prime energy from proteins and fats than it is from carbohydrates. However, it can take several weeks to adjust from carbohydrate energy dependence to being able to get it from protein and fats. But when it happens, it is powerful! A diet high in good fats, moderate in protein with controlled levels of carbohydrate encourages healing while promoting wellness and longevity. With the proper fuel balance, our bodies can achieve peak performance, maximum potential and longevity! The most magical thing about our business is how different we are to any other Pilates around. Our classes are a maximum of ten people and each class is finished in just 40 minutes. Our clients tell us they just cannot believe how much they can seem to get done in the time and how quickly it seems to go.
My all-time favourite quote is: ‘Every moment of our lives can be the beginning of great things’. – Joseph Pilates
How do you create magic for your clients?
The best bit of advice I ever received was, never ever give up. It’s true that perseverance really does pay off, if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.
We create magic for our clients by helping them achieve their health goals. We have client after client telling us of how quickly they feel like they can achieve their goals whether it be improving their core strength, toning up or recovering from a particular injury.
What can you make appear? We believe we are able to help confidence appear for our clients. Once they start to see the benefits of our Pilates programs and realise they can achieve their goals, the confidence begins to show.
What can you make disappear? Fortunately for us we do tend to help make that excess weight disappear for our clients who come along regularly, but not only that we also believe that we help injuries to disappear.

SOLAR MATTERS
HOW SOLAR PV PANELS WORK Have you ever wondered how solar energy actually works? Electricity is created when electrons flow around a closed circuit, so how do you create that using solar panels and sunshine?
It’s actually quite complex. Light is made up of photons and when these hit the solar PV panel, they dislodge electrons, which then start to move around inside the silicon, leaving holes. The electrons then recombine,
releasing energy. When this energy is captured, it creates the photovoltaic effect.
The following pictures will help explain this better.
1
The solar PV panels contain silicon crystals, which contain atoms, and these are surrounded by electrons.
2
When sunlight hits the silicon crystals, the electrons are ejected and move around randomly.
3
This leaves behind an electron hole.
The electricity from the solar PV panels then travels along heavy duty wires to the inverter. The inverter boosts this fairly feeble flow of electricity (known as ‘low voltage DC’), turning it into clean and reliable high voltage 240V AC electricity. This is then compatible with your household appliances and the electricity grid.
4
When an electron finds this hole, it recombines, thus creating energy which can be captured as electricity.

WITH MYLESTONES For many of us, coffee is a great way to kick-start the day. For Lachlan and Adelaide, coffee has become a way to kick-start their careers.
You may have seen the Mylestones Solutions coffee cart crew travelling around the Sunshine Coast. These carts are popping up all over Queensland and are creating supported employment opportunities for people with barriers to work, like disabilities or injuries. When it comes time to find a job, whether it’s your first or your 15th, some people want one more stepping stone before they leap into open employment. That stepping stone looks different for everyone; maybe it’s interview training, a qualification or supported work experience in a coffee cart. For local businesses hiring staff, this ensures people are ready and willing to work. Two of those people are Lachlan and Adelaide, qualified baristas working in the Maroochydore coffee cart, and they spilt the beans on what this experience means for them. After recently completing qualifications in IT, 17-year-old Lachlan was faced with finding his first job, but the thought of going through the interview process was holding him back. “I usually avoid situations where I need to talk to people, so I was thinking doing an interview and getting a job would be almost impossible,” Lachlan explained. “This job has taught me a lot about making coffee, but it’s also taught me how to interact with customers and other employees. I think that’s what will help me most with starting my career.”
Lachlan’s goal is to find a job in IT so he can use his qualifications. Baristas in the Mylestones coffee carts stay in the job for six months before making their next career move. Working alongside Lachlan is 29-year-old Adelaide, who after being out of a job for a few years was finding it difficult to get back into the workforce. “I was really sick for a couple of years and wasn’t working during that time. When I finally got better, even though I had experience working in hospitality, I just couldn’t get a job,” Adelaide said. “I decided to do a barista course with Mylestones and from there I joined the coffee cart crew. I love it. This job is about helping you along the way to getting a job; it has been a great stepping stone for me to get back into work.” Adelaide is going to stay on working in the coffee cart for another six months, teaching the next wave of employees how it’s done. She describes herself as a ‘Mylestones Mentor’. Mylestones Solutions is part of the Mylestones brand, offering choice and control to job seekers within a supported environment. Alternatively, individuals who choose to pursue open employment can work with Mylestones Employment to find the right fit. If you are looking to hire an employee who you know is ready and eager to work, get in touch with your local Mylestones team today. ca Call 1800 275 753 or visit www.mylestones.org.au www.mattersmagazine.com.au 75

MAGIC MOMENTS
WOW, THAT’S INTERESTING! Hello readers, it’s ‘Magic Moments’ time again. I was trying to think about what the best thing might be to write about in this issue. I really don’t want you to get to the end of this and say, “So what?” That’s Vickie’s Rule. She says, “They have to read it and say, oh wow, I didn’t know that, that was interesting.” So, I thought, what are some bits of MAGIC about the Coast, that people may not know? And I remembered hearing these few, so thought I would share them with you.
DID YOU KNOW THAT: • Back in the 1820s, three runaway convicts lived here. Their names were Finnegan, Parsons and Pamphlet and they lived with local natives for a little over six months.
• The term ‘fair dinkum’ started right here on the Sunshine Coast. They say that a convict from England settled in the area and started trading with the Aborigines. When he tried to trade his tin can for a boomerang, the tribal elder misheard ‘tin can’ as ‘din kum’ and this was then used by the Aboriginals while trading and the rest is history. Fair Dinkum. • Mudjimba Island was owned by none other than Sean Connery himself, between 1962 and 1983. At the time he was married to actress Diane Cilento, who was born on the island. • The pub at Aussie World, formerly known as the Ettamogah Pub, is the most photographed pub in Australia.
So, it’s my wish that you are now saying, “Oh, I didn’t know that!” Until next time, don’t sweat the small stuff, BE HAPPY. c

A LITTLE BIT OF
Magic
BY VICKIE MAGIC
I recently attended a Pat Mesiti event in Brisbane. I had promised my dad before he passed that I would go to one. Dad invited me to go with him and mum to an event at Versace on the Gold Coast. I was supposed to go but, at the last minute – and I can’t even remember why right now - I wasn’t able to go. But Dad held my hands and made me promise him I would go to another one; it was just something that he really wanted me to do. Well, I didn’t go to another one with Dad, but the other week I saw a Pat Mesiti workshop advertised on Facebook and was reminded of my promise to Dad.
Vickie Magic says “One bit of advice that my Dad gave me early in life is, make your own decisions, don’t let other people tell you what to think. Let people stand before you in the PRESENT MOMENT.” Pat Mesiti
On the drive down to Brisbane, I reminisced about all the MAGIC Dad taught me from as far back as I can remember, including this one. Most of these learnings are things that I now live my life by in honour of him. These learnings included: Whatever you say is your truth. If you say you can’t do something, you can’t. If you say you are sick, you are. Basically, say it then live it. Whatever you desire for yourself and your life, proclaim it, work out how others do it, then just do it. It doesn’t take hard work to succeed, it doesn’t take talent, and it doesn’t take luck. It takes belief. If you believe, that is the ONLY way you can ever achieve. Within the first half hour of listening to Pat, he told me a story that I have never heard before;
78 ISSUE 92
I certainly wasn’t surprised to hear it because Dad was always giving. Pat told me, and the rest of the workshop, that back in the early days after he spoke one day, Dad was in the audience and he came up to him and gifted him $1,000 to help with his work with young people. Pat said that Dad told him he just felt led to give him the money. Pat said that “To this day, I will never forget the generosity, but not only that, it was the belief in my future”. Pat has spoken for, and shared the platform globally with some of the world’s most influential people including Sir Richard Branson, Donald Trump, Denis Waitley, Robert Kiyosaki, Mark Victor Hansen, Jim Rohn, the late Charlie ‘Tremendous’ Jones, Captain Jerry Coffee, Allan Pease, Bob Proctor, Willie Jolley, Morris Goodman
(‘The Miracle Man’) and many more. He is a highly effective communicator and, most notably, an income acceleration coach. His passion is to EQUIP and EMPOWER individuals and businesses to experience growth and prosperity to their fullest potential. His expertise is to SHIFT MINDSETS AND TO BUILD BIGGER PEOPLE to produce results. After the event, I was able to grab Pat for a few moments to get a little bit of MAGIC from him to share with you. I asked him for the top three bits of MAGIC he would offer our readers. The first thing Pat said was, CLARIFY YOUR DREAMS. Clarify your purpose. Why are you in business? What value can you bring to people? I believe that everything lives or dies
A dream is a compelling future, that pushes you forward. Secondly, engage a mentor. Find someone that can extrapolate the MAGIC out of you. The statue of David is just a big ugly rock without Michelangelo. When you look at some of the famous basketball players, like Scottie Pippen, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordon, all of those guys needed a mentor. Even though they were the dream team, they needed a coach to harness them and put them together as a magnificent unit. I think mentorship is very underrated and, at other times, it’s a dream misunderstood. People think that a mentor is just someone you listen to, but it’s not, it’s someone who you follow and someone whose ideas you implement. The third thing is to watch your associations. Your associations in life can either pull you up or tear you down. The future prophecy of your life is linked to those that are closest to you. If an association can’t increase you then it’s eventually going to deplete you. So be aware
My faith is a big thing for me. I was so messed up it wasn’t funny. But the next thing was my associations, getting in with the right people is the most vital. These are two things that affect my life to this day.
me earlier was to keep good associations. I mentioned this before; we really are the sum of the people we surround ourselves with. That impacts us more than you will ever realise. We kid ourselves, some of us, I am a self-made man, I am self-made this or that, no, we are not. We are all by-products of other peoples’ influences, cultures, beliefs, that have come into our hearts. Like I mentioned about your Dad, he is one of the great men that touched my life when he gifted me that $1,000; it’s something I will never forget.

COMMUNITY BUSINESS
NEW STORE
SUPPORTING LOCALS
Building a 2000m2 supermarket is no easy feat but thanks to our fabulous project team, we are making progress, with site handover due in June, ready for an August grand opening. White’s Supa IGA Baringa is situated in the exciting new Stockland City of Colour, Aura. We have been in the design process now for over 12 months, with hours of research and planning taking place well before the turning of the sod. As a small independent supermarket operator, it is great to have the freedom to design a store with each aspect considered and selected to match the vibe and dynamism of the local community, creating a unique food destination with its very own personality and idiosyncrasies.
As you can imagine, an enormous part of building any supermarket involves refrigerated displays, freezers and cold rooms. We chose to have our equipment sourced and made locally. Many units are custom-built and unique to our store design. I am thrilled to continue to work alongside manufacturer and innovator John Maslen of Advanced Refrigeration Technology at Warana to create some new designs for the Baringa store.

TOP SEVEN INTELLIGENT COMMUNITIES
IN THE WORLD!
The flow-on benefits the Sunshine Coast will enjoy as a result of being named in the top seven Intelligent Communities of the world for 2019 really crystallised for us this month. The Sunshine Coast is the only location in the southern hemisphere to receive this recognition by the global Intelligent Community Forum, having competed against hundreds of entries.
said the benefits our community would reap from the Top 7 accolade would permeate for years to come. Mr Jung said we should also expect to receive many requests for delegations to visit us on the Sunshine Coast, in particular, from south-east Asian nations who are very interested in Australia. He said the Sunshine Coast would be able to leverage the Top 7 brand to help attract and retain talent, jobs and investment in our region.
The Intelligent Community award recognises communities that are leading the way in using technology to increase efficiencies, expand opportunities, build inclusive prosperity, tackle social and governance challenges and enrich their residents’ quality of life. While we hope to win the coveted title of World’s Most Intelligent Community when the winner is announced in New York on June 13, we are so excited by what we have already achieved. The Sunshine Coast had a great opportunity to demonstrate its leadership in innovation when we recently hosted ICF co-founder John Jung as part of the judging process for the 2019 Intelligent Community of the Year. In an address to local business and industry leaders at the Maroochydore RSL, Mr Jung
For example, some of the smaller communities who have been named in the Top 7 in past years have become pilot cities where companies are attracted to test advanced and experimental technology, such as autonomous vehicles, 5G and other digital solutions. Mr Jung explained that the enabling infrastructure we are putting in place –
such as International Broadband Submarine Cable and growing a knowledge-based workforce – are very attractive for companies on the look-out for prime locations in which to invest.
IT CERTAINLY GIVES US A GREAT SENSE OF CONFIDENCE AND OPTIMISM FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR REGION. I would like to pay tribute to the council staff, business and community leaders who worked hard to bring our Top 7 submission to fruition. It was an outstanding effort by all involved and demonstrates the collaborative and innovative community in which we work, live and play. c
