note
Let’s strive to Thrive Some are saying, “Good riddance to 2020”, while others are saying “2020 was a great year”. But as 2020 comes to an end, we can all safely say this is a year we will NEVER forget. Never before have we experienced life and business like we have in the past six months; it has been an interesting and somewhat awakening time for all.
We may feel safe here in our little bubble and sometimes we can even forget what’s going on in the rest of Australia and the world. My daughter, Ashleigh, lives in Melbourne and it is safe to say they have most definitely suffered a much worse fate than us. At the time of writing we are unsure if she will even get home for Christmas, a first in her 29 years of life. How will it end? We don’t really know. It’s important we support each other as best we can and that we support local. I truly feel it is more important than ever that we shop local wherever possible and do all we can to keep our dollars right here on the Sunshine Coast. Personally, I don’t think that has to mean paying more. I believe we have to look after our money, but sometimes it is surprising the opportunities and indeed savings that can be found right around the corner when we keep our eyes open. So yeah, where we can, let’s do our best to support our neighbours and to help the Sunshine Coast Thrive. I know we are not exactly all in this together, some have things worse, for sure, and some have it way better, that’s the truth. But I do think if we take a moment to stop and think, “Could I get this locally for the same or a better price and keep my buck here?”
Let’s work together to keep more dollars in our own backyard and strive to Thrive.

LOCAL SUCCESS
A STORY OF SURVIVAL
with a vision to thrive
With a combined total of just shy of 65 years within the Queensland Police Service, Brad and Bec Wilson knew it was time for something new. They talked about what it was that they really wanted to do. They knew they enjoyed working with people, helping people, inspiring happiness and health. In September 2019, Zen Den was formed. It has been a very interesting, albeit bumpy ride, but Bec and Brad have truly enjoyed the planning and establishment of the Centre. It is evolving and the pair are now very much looking forward to the next stage of their journey. In the beginning, things started well; they had only been open six months and had started to build a local client base. However, on March 22, they were required to completely close the business and remained closed for four months. It was a difficult time with the ATO advising that as they hadn’t been open twelve months, they were not entitled to JobKeeper. This meant they were unable to keep their team. Not only was this heartbreaking financially, but it left them with emotional stress too as they genuinely cared about their team. Bec and Brad have always strived to do the best they can for their members and 6 ISSUE 97
clients. Their first action was to suspend the members’ payments, so they wouldn’t incur costs for a centre they could not use. Although that decision was hard on their young business, the long-term effect resulted in members being appreciative of that action and they have returned, with some even bringing additional members and clients.
The initial phase of closure allowed them to have a short break. They had been working 15 hours straight every day for six months. With the centre open seven days a week, the break was actually amazing. They both decided early on to focus on the positives of what the Covid-19 break could provide. It gave an opportunity to engage in their own mental and physical wellbeing. Going for walks, spending time at the beach, swimming and embracing exercise, it allowed them to get a lot of jobs and gardening done around the house. It also gave them a unique opportunity to interact with family on a more personal level. It was intentional that they did not allow themselves to get caught up with the negativity and hype on the news and social media. They stayed up-to-date with government regulations and information regarding business and restrictions, but
made a conscious decision to focus on factual information. The next phase was to investigate what was working and what was not at the Centre. They worked out what improvements could be made and how to implement them and as a result, made some major changes, implementing some new strategies to improve client services. They then began constructing new rooms, purchasing additional equipment and streamlining some of the operations. The results are impressive. As restrictions lifted, they gradually reopened as different services were permitted.
Yes… Covid was most definitely hard; however it has resulted in some positive impacts on the business, which in turn, saw additional services and benefits for their clients. The Centre is now focused on providing services which will enhance and improve the wellbeing and relaxation of individuals. It is their vision to ensure each and every customer is treated to the highest standard of pampering, relaxation, and wellness services available. They now include a large range of beauty therapy treatments, couples and singles massage services, as well as still offering
their previous range of wellness treatments. (Floatation Pods, Light Therapy Pods, Sound Rooms, Thermal Crystal Mats, and Saunas). On top of the extra services they now offer, they have also added a relaxing and comfortable lounge area for clients to rest in and enjoy. As guests relax, they are able to indulge themself in treats such as high tea, Devonshire tea, and grazing platters. To complement these treats, they also offer a full range of coffees, teas, champagne, wine, and beer to enjoy.
Zen Den Day Spa is committed to providing affordable, day spa experiences to relax and destress and to provide a positive impact on the wellbeing and happiness of their customers. The centre is for everybody. In today’s world we all need to spend a little time on ourselves to take some important time out to recharge, revive, regenerate, and recalibrate,
in order to ensure that we do indeed THRIVE. The benefits are substantial of taking that time out for self-care and wellbeing; those around us and particularly those we love and care for will notice the positive impacts. We will be less stressed, have more patience, be more understanding, and willing to have a positive impact on the lives of others. We will feel better within ourselves and more content and happier as a person. Who wouldn’t want that? e www.zendendayspa.com.au

THRIVING
IS YOUR BUSINESS
dying, surviving or thriving? It certainly has been interesting times over the past six months or so. Every business owner I speak to seems to have a different story. Some have definitely taken a dive, depending on what they sell; some have even died. Who knew that travel would almost become such a tricky industry in 2020? Some agencies have even closed their doors. Some businesses have died, and some have only just survived, holding on by the skin of their teeth, while others have absolutely thrived.
8 ISSUE 97
I started asking questions, looking for a pattern, to see if there was a reason that stood out for the ones that seemed to be thriving.
4. What do they need?
5. What can we do better?
6. What could we streamline? Naturally any travel type business has, for the most part, seen a turn for the worse, if not a complete ceasing of business. However, I have definitely noticed that businesses that sell anything to do with home decoration or renovation seem to be doing pretty well, and in some cases, great. It does seem to depend on what product or service they sell. People have been decluttering, renovating and altogether improving their homes. The other thing I noticed was the businesses that were thriving were not being complacent; they were ensuring they kept putting their best foot forward. They were thinking outside of the square and pivoting left, right and centre.
7. What new customers could we target – and how?
So, if you haven’t had a Covid-19 brainstorm yet for your business, maybe now is the time to get your team together. Ask the following questions:
8. Could we create a new market by applying our skills to different problems?
1. What else is possible?
10. What is something we could put in place to increase client retention?
2. What can we offer our clients on top of what we already do?
3. What new products could we sell to our existing clients?
9. Who is my ideal customer?
It’s up to us in these tricky times to evolve more than ever before by truly thinking outside the square and doing all that we can to ensure we maximise growth. e

A THRIVING INDUSTRY
Whilst our economy is officially in recession, the sentiment on the Sunshine Coast, for the most part, is quite positive.
It probably won’t come as a surprise to you to hear that one industry that is definitely thriving right now is that of medical scrubs.
COOL PEOPLE DON’T LEAVE DOGS IN HOT CARS!
Most business owners I’ve spoken to are doing just as well, if not better, than preCovid-19. It’s interesting because when we went through the fallout of the GFC, it felt much heavier and negative – and we weren’t in a recession!
Local Sunshine Coast-based company, Infectious Clothing Company, is no stranger to hard work. In fact, Sally and Peter Doran have been working hard for the last seven years building their business. They know they are fortunate to be in a thriving industry right now, and certainly feel for businesses that have struggled during these tricky times. Their main challenge right now is keeping supply chains intact given the global shutdowns and pressures on the shipping industry to move garments.
Cause for Paws 101 is a Sunny Coast business with a passion for dogs. This summer, they are truly dedicated to inspiring individuals and business owners to step up and to help them raise awareness of the real danger of leaving dogs in hot cars.
An unprecedented demand for scrubs in the past few months, almost doubling their workload, has seen them investing in new tech to streamline both customer and team experiences to scale up and meet demand.
Join the cause by displaying a FREE sticker on your business window. All you have to do is order your sticker, we will post it to you free of charge and give your business a shout-out on social media to say thank you.
On top of that, Infectious Clothing Company also now include corporate uniforms, plain and branded, to its already successful range.
It’s a no-brainer.
Today, businesses are cautiously optimistic – they are planning for growth, but also making sure their working capital and “war chest” are healthy, just in case there are storms around the corner. Forecasting and planning around cash flow as we come into the festive season and beyond is really critical for any business, no matter the size. There are some amazing tools you can use, but sometimes, a simple Excel budget gets the job done in a way you can easily understand and work on yourself. If you would like a free budget template, drop the BFB team an email at info@brillianceforbusinsess.com.au – no obligations, just a simple, easy to use starting point for you and your business. ca
Check out their massive range online, including fun cartoon and holiday prints. ca
Did you know for example that in just four to six minutes a dog can actually die inside a hot car? Did you know also that leaving a dog in a hot car carries a $40,000 fine and a potential jail sentence?
Help us to help these beautiful dogs, help us to raise the awareness of this important cause. Help us to encourage dog owners to stop and think. Help us to be the change. Contact us on Facebook. ca

GUARANTEED FUTURE VALUE – WHAT’S THE CATCH? Seen recent new car ads featuring ‘guaranteed future value’? These attempt to leverage your fear that your new car will fall drastically in value, especially when your finance contract has a balloon payment (a large final repayment) at the end of the contract. If you are considering these offers, take time to review your options and consider the following important points: • You may have less choice when you want to trade in as you must return to the same dealer. • Generally, maintenance must be completed by the dealership’s workshop as a condition of the offer. • There will be ‘return conditions’ on the contract, capping kilometres travelled and allowing for only ‘fair wear and tear’ on the vehicle.

QUEENSLAND SET FOR A PROPERTY BOOM!
We are expecting to see more redundancies as the JobKeeper payment changes. This process is never easy and is often a distressing time for business owners and employees alike.
How savvy investors can benefit now with our 10K Investor Boost!
There are some simple, yet costly mistakes that businesses make either because they are avoiding unpleasant conversations, don’t have a documented process or because they don’t follow the steps required around procedural fairness. Here are some areas to consider: 1. Size of your business – if you have more than 15 employees, there are different rules around redundancies that you need to be aware of. 2. The Modern Award you are covered by – some Awards have additional clauses that can affect the redundancy process.
As you can see, there is a lot to consider, so ensure you do your research or speak to an experienced Finance Broker. ca
3. Consultation process – don’t avoid this process because it is uncomfortable. One of your team may have an idea that you haven’t considered and if you terminate immediately, then it could end up in a Fair Work claim.

At Think Investment Realty, we have said all throughout 2020 the property sector will be the lead runner in a post down-turn economy recovery, and recent reports from the property experts confirm our research. Queensland is set for a property boom, with property prices anticipated to soar by more than 20 per cent in some regions and may continue for years, according to Westpac economists. Recent CoreLogic data shows the number of house sales in Brisbane jumped 21% in July, increasing in value almost 23% to $1.4 billion – the highest increase for any Australian capital city. With confidence in the Queensland housing market being driven by government stimulus, infrastructure spending and cheaper than ever interest rates, demand for property is at an all-time high. With that in mind, even if investing in property is just a twinkle in your eye right now, make it a reality sooner rather than later by taking advantage of our $10,000 Investor Boost, available right now on selected South-East Qld properties. SEQUENCING RISK: THE WORST RETURNS IN THEIR WORST ORDER
LEFT OUT OF A WILL? OR … NOT ADEQUATELY PROVIDED FOR?
If you are approaching retirement near a market drop, this is something you need to know.
It is unlikely that the first thing that comes to mind when your loved one passes is whether you have been adequately provided for in their Will.
The best outcome for invested funds with variable annual returns occurs when the worst returns happen first, and the best returns happen last. The worst outcome is when the order is reversed and worst returns happen at the end of the investment, when invested funds are higher.
OUR VISION FOR YANDINA ART & FRAMING Yandina is buzzing with successful arts markets conducted in Yandina Art and Framing’s grounds. Eight artists showed their widely divergent works, conducted classes, and added to the ambience of the widely anticipated outdoor events in September and October.
Three ways to mitigate against sequencing risk:
If you are a spouse, child or dependant of a deceased person and have been left out of their Will or not adequately provided for in their Will, you may be eligible to make an application to the Court seeking provision or adequate provision from the deceased person’s estate. This is commonly called a family provision application.
1. Amend your asset allocation as you near retirement. Choose high growth assets early and amend asset allocation to more conservative assets as you near retirement.
If you believe this may apply to you, do not delay in seeking legal advice, as there is a strict timeframe to commence a family provision application.
“We’ve concentrated on framing and built a reputation for high quality work. Our longterm plan was always to extend into art sales, demonstrations and shows and we are delighted at this development,” Alice says.
2. Reserve a cash allocation. Holding a number of years’ worth of income requirements in cash or similarly defensive assets means a market downturn before retirement will have less effect as you won’t need to dip into retirement savings, which have been affected by the downturn.
Family provision applications must be commenced in Court within nine months after the death of the deceased.
The next phase will be a move into art supplies, which will become available before Christmas.
Need legal advice fast? Klein Legal are experts in these matters. For more information, please contact them for a free 20-minute consultation. ca
“We’ve lost count of the number of requests for canvases, brushes, oils and inks and we’re excited to be adding these products to our range,” Alice says.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GRANDPARENTS
WE COULD TELL YOU WE ARE AMAZING
Grandparents can help our children truly tap into their heritage. Encouraging our children to ask their grandparents about their lives and their loves can be a fun and rewarding task that helps to keep family stories alive.
However, you would probably believe it more from a happy customer. We pride ourselves on our reviews. We especially love this one:
Grandparents may live far away from their family; however our experience shows that they love it when someone shows an interest in who they are, what they do and where they have come from.
“We stayed in the Lalique Cottage. It was so secluded and peaceful. It felt like we were hundreds of miles from anywhere, but in fact only five minutes from Montville. The private plunge pool was fantastic and the extra touches of port and chocolates was very personal. We ordered dinner for two nights and were provided with a wonderful selection of meats, salads, breads and desserts. I would highly recommend this property for couples wanting to get away and spend some quiet and relaxing time together. We will definitely be returning!!”
Here are some starting questions for the kids: 1. What was your first job? 2. W hat are the full names of your brothers or sisters? 3. W hat were you good at in school? Did you have a favourite subject? 4. W hat was/has been one of the biggest struggles you've overcome? 5. W as there a certain place you and your friends liked to hang out? RAPID MINDSET THERAPIES
PERFECT WEIGHT
forever
WITH SPIRI BUHAGIAR // RAPID MINDSET THERAPIES
It is the job of the unconscious mind to protect you and to keep you safe...
I have worked with so many individuals over the years who have yo-yoed with weight, many of who through desperation underwent surgeries such as lap band and gastric sleeve, only to see their weight return. I imagine there have been hundreds of thousands of diets created since the 1950s – yes, they do work but not permanently. I now have a greater understanding why – I believe it is because of two things: 1. Punishment Diets punish you – statements like YOU MUST do this, you must do that, you must not eat this, you must not eat that. 2. Why weight has been a part of your life Excess weight or low weight is due to 1. Habit of belief 2. Habit of action/behaviour This means these habits need to be addressed; importantly we need to understand why these habits have become part of your life, as it’s only through understanding on 14 ISSUE 97
an intellectual basis that you can take control, and understand why your unconscious has kept these behaviours and habits. The way we can discover the reasons why is through accessing the unconscious mind through regression. This is where your beliefs are stored. It is the job of the unconscious mind to protect you and to keep you safe – this means that your programming needs to be reprogrammed - but first, the reason why weight is a constant in one’s life needs to be identified. This can only happen through dialoguing directly with the unconscious mind through hypnotic regression. The unconscious mind is responsible for functioning of your body; it is also the record keeper of all of your emotions and memories – very dissimilar to your conscious mind, which has reasoning and understanding. The unconscious mind is emotional, without reasoning and a depth of understanding, which I liken to the behaviour of an average four-year-

THE SUNSHINE COAST INTERNET WITH IAN ROBSON // SUNRISE INTERNET What a year for the Sunshine Coast’s Internet!
UNDER PRESSURE Internet pressure index recorded March 2020
There have been some interesting observations, with the AFR calling our NBN “notoriously unreliable” in October 2020. Last financial year… • The NBN Chief earned more than $3 million (taxpayer funded). • NBN missed revenue target by $1.1 billion. • 10 of the management staff took home more than $1 million each. • 850 employees earned more than $200,000 each. • NBN asked the government for more money, another $4.5 billion to do a better job. There were some major internet usage developments during Covid, including telehealth and online consultations, video conferencing; Facebook, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, working and schooling from home.
The internet pressure on the Sunshine Coast was one the highest rated in Australia and the tourism sector had relatively poor internet available for demanding visitors from metro areas. People struggled in video conferences with interstate and CBD groups, and the surge in telehealth consultations meant higher expectations from the internet. Education and communication was not world class and even Netflix, 4K TV users, Gamers, and Digital nomads were frustrated.
RISE INTERNET NECTS SUNRISE INTERNET SUNRISE INTERNET RLDSUNRISE CLASS INTERNET CONNECTS CONNECTS CONNECTS WORLD CLASS RNET WORLD CLASS WORLD-CLASS INTERNET OSSINTERNET THE INTERNET ACROSS THE SHINE COAST ACROSS THE ACROSS THE People’s assumptions were that the NBN could enable a fibre future, even though awareness of alternative world-class fibre availability was low.
But here’s the good news:
Noosa, businesses, schools, universities, hospitals, medical centres, resorts, residential apartments and Council sites can now access better world class internet at lower costs than ever before, often over 30% less than two years ago, with Gigabit speeds. • There are indeed other choices across the Sunshine Coast available right now, that actually deliver Fibre to the Premise, unlike the NBN, which often uses old copper wires in the streets. • Service levels are up! Customers can expect to have guarantees of a one-hour response with a fault, and four hours to restore the service, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. • 1:1 contention ratios (sounds complex but it simply means you get what you pay for, and it is not shared with lots of neighbours and does not slow down or drop out at peak times).
Ian has worked across Australian telecommunications since deregulation in the 1990’s as a Management Executive with multinationals, Vodafone and Telstra, and also as a pioneer in the launch of GSM and Fibre Networks. With an intimate understanding of opportunities and challenges for the Sunshine Coast, he is passionate about enabling change in Australia’s low world ranking in internet performance.

IS COLLAGEN THE
fountain of youth? WITH KIRSTEN SWEENEY // LIVING VALLEY HEALTH RETREAT Collagen is seen as ‘trendy’ in our modern western world, but for centuries Asians have consumed beef bones and cartilage, pig trotters, chicken feet, sheep skin, etc., knowing that these foods help smooth out their ageing skin, preserve their joints and support longevity inside and out! As a naturopath, it is my mission to make more people aware of this little beauty called collagen, as the emerging clinical research is nothing but positive! Collagen: the word is derived from the Greek word ‘kolla’, which means ‘glue’. It does just that! Collagen holds the body together. Collagen is the most important and abundant structural protein found in our bodies, specifically in our skin, ligaments, joint tissues, blood vessels, tendons and other tissues - gluing our cells together and giving our skin its structure and elasticity. It is the essential building block of all connective tissue. Collagen is formed from glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, which all help to heal and strengthen damaged tissue by promoting repair on a cellular level. Collagen structures begin to break down during our twenties and the waning progresses as we age. Collagen declines more rapidly under the influence of tobacco, 16 ISSUE 97
other toxic drugs, alcohol, processed foods, menopause and chronic disease. Without sufficient collagen, our tissues weaken and become compromised over time, thus accelerating the ageing process. As our western meat-eating diet does not generally contain the organs and bones of the animals, we can support our body's limited production by adding collagen to our daily nutrition, and thereby slow down the ageing process. •S KIN ELASTICITY, TONE, AND MOISTURE PLUS WOUND HEALING – Studies have revealed that supplementation of dietary collagen powder can produce significant improvements to skin elasticity within eight weeks, reducing the formation of fine lines and wrinkles by 20%. It also reduces cellulite and accelerates wound healing. • JOINT HEALTH – A 2015 study by Nutricion Hospialaria cited more than 60 other studies designed to measure the impact of collagen on overall joint health and joint pain. The results indicated that collagen supplementation relieves joint pain, prevents degradation and helps maintain joint integrity. • GUT HEALTH – Dietary collagen improves digestion by restoring epithelial lining. It also provides the amino acids, ie., the building blocks needed to repair, heal, seal and maintain cells in the gut.
•O THER TISSUES – Collagen plays a positive role in building strength in the hair and nails, improving elasticity and repairing damaged blood vessels. Collagen is often left out of diets because we generally eat leaner cuts of meats, without the bones, organs and connective tissue that our ancestors ate. I recommend my patients to obtain added collagen from organ meats, and incorporate bone broth in their diets. This also provides a multitude of vitamins and minerals. A convenient way to get a daily dose of collagen is to supplement from a producer that practises ethical, sustainable farming methods, raising grass fed animals, and produce without additives or preservatives.
Use collagen every day, in a bone broth, a protein shake or as an added supplement. I know that it will help to slow down the aging process, keeping you young inside and out! a Kirsten Sweeney ND, Naturopath Living Valley Health Retreat www.livingvalley.com.au

So often on location or at the Empire Art Photography studio, I meet amazing women, hear their stories of heartache, hard work and triumph and feel disappointed. In photographing them, I am only sharing a two-dimensional aspect of their incredible story. It is visually important, but it isn’t the whole story. When I met Josanne Falla, an entrepreneur and Noosa local, she suggested the idea of a beautiful hard copy book celebrating and documenting these inspirational ladies. It felt serendipitous, and I knew I was one step closer to realising this dream. When we met Melinda Uys, a writer of considerable talent living right here on the Coast, we knew we had the perfect person to bring these stories to life.

Before you spend a single dollar on advertising, make sure your website is campaign-ready.
Websites have to act as the bridge between your marketing and sales processes.
Do you have a website that, despite all your efforts, gives you almost no leads?
A campaign ready website MUST do three things:
You are not alone. This year, over US$31 billion will be spent on Facebook ads, which equates to trillions of ads (Business Insider, 2020). The average click rate was 1.1% (Ad Stage, 2020), showing almost 99% of worldwide Facebook ad spend was wasted. Even scarier, the average conversion rate for websites is less than 3% (Wordstream, 2020). At Marketing Broker Australia, we have partnered with copywriters, web developers and fellow marketers to create campaignready websites.
• Grab attention. • Facilitate the prospect’s information-gathering and decision-making process. • Provide a specific, low risk, easy to take action that helps them move to the next stage of your sales process. Our packages start at $3600 + GST and include website strategy, professional SEO copywriting, downloadable eBook, integrations with CRM, social and search, easy to self-manage web-design and more. USING ART AND FRAMING
for your room makeovers
WITH PAULA AND JOHN GOWLAND // SUNSHINE COAST ART & FRAMING GALLERY The size of the average Australian home is approximately 233 square metres. Of all the space in that home, the wall space is usually the most neglected. So why not spruce up your home with some beautiful art and framing? It offers one of the most economical ways to give your living space a new look and will dramatically change the overall feel of your entire home. Start by choosing a room that has a lot of empty wall space. You can add artwork and family photos using just the right matting and frame designs. You can purchase framed wall decor that will fit with your furnishings perfectly and will enhance any room. You need to choose elements that

will create an appealing balance to make your home enjoyable to look at and to live in. Keep in mind that your own family photos or family heirlooms look great in living rooms, hallways and bedrooms. This is a fun way of making them part of your everyday lives.
Adding a beautifully framed piece of art to a bare wall in a bedroom can make it come alive with colour, therefore creating a space that is peaceful and restful. Whether your décor is traditional or contemporary, you can choose art and framing to achieve a whole new look for your home.

HAVE A
bad tenant? WITH KYLIE CHIVERS AND LUKE FORMAN GuaRENTeed There’s a common misconception that if you have a good property manager and they do their job with screening the applicants, you will not get a bad tenant. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple or reliable. After screening and housing more than 15,000 tenants over 10 years, we have seen how the system can let down both property managers and property investors by letting bad tenants slip through the cracks. TICA is the most used tenancy database, or ‘blacklist’ as some like to call it in Australia. It provides a good service to property managers by listing tenants who have defaulted in some way, like ongoing rent arrears, malicious damage, abandoning the property, illegal activity, having an unauthorised pet and many more things. But the fundamental flaw with this system is it only works if the bad tenant’s previous property manager went through the process of getting approval to register them on the list, it doesn’t happen automatically. It can be costly and time-consuming, so many don’t do it. Therefore, we have bad tenants who continue to reoffend and get away with it, leaving the next poor unsuspecting landlord to deal with it. But what causes a tenant to behave badly? In our experience it can be a serial bad tenant who knows the system and knows how to get around it, and then there is the accidental bad tenant. This tenant is normally a good tenant, but something has happened in their life that leads them to no longer cope with the obligations and responsibilities of the tenancy. BUSINESS IS SAFER
in the “cloud”
BY SHAREE WEBSTER, CA DIRECTOR // HOLMANS ACCOUNTING & TAXATION Businesses all over the world are moving to the Cloud and there is good reason for doing so. We as accountants have experienced the benefits of the Cloud first-hand; however, it is not the accessibility or cost that we see as the most advantageous benefit, but more the increased security it provides. WHY IS YOUR DATA SAFER IN THE CLOUD? 1. Physical Storage The Cloud does not actually mean that data is floating around in those white fluffy things we see in the sky. Instead, your data is stored on multiple physical servers that are geographically diverse and securely monitored 24/7 – a much more advanced and reliable approach compared to your local alarm system. 2. Encryption Professional cloud applications use secure, encrypted connections to move and store data. Encryptions keep your data safe from unauthorised users and limits the risk of interception. 3. Digital Trails
Most cloud applications have an activity log feature that provides a complete record of actions that have occurred. For business owners, the detailed trail provides peace of mind while also helping to prevent security breaches.
accessed if your password is compromised.
4. Data Backup
4. Employee Education
When data is stored and processed in the Cloud, it provides automatic data backups on redundant servers to ensure that your information is never lost and business can continue as usual. It provides multiple levels of defence against business disruptions, including natural disasters, equipment failure, and human error or sabotage.
Introduce a data security policy and train your employees on how to identify phishing scams. Your employees should be your first line of defence, so be sure they understand what to do if they encounter any red flags.
KEEPING YOUR DATA SAFE IN THE CLOUD 1. Passwords Create a strong password - Keep them long and as unique as possible with little to no reference to your personal life. You should use a different password for each cloud application and update it regularly. 2. Multi-Factor Authentication Multi-factor or 2-step authentication provides an additional layer of security on your information. It reduces the risk of your data being
3. Anti-Malware/Virus Software Make sure anti-malware software is installed on all your devices and ensure it is updated regularly.
5. Permissions The cloud can allow you to limit user privileges to help manage sensitive data. Remember, your data is incredibly valuable, so ensure that you look for an accountant who prides themselves on making continuous improvements to your business processes and information management technologies. m www.holmans.com.au Disclaimer: This article contains general information only. CONFESSIONS OF A
ghostwriter What is The Phoenix Phenomenon? The mystery solved.
When people hear about my online series, The Phoenix Phenomenon, they ask me what it means. To be perfectly honest, when I first chose the name for my interview series, I simply liked the sound of it. But I quickly began to see the significance in my choice of words. It was the perfect way to describe the incredible stories of my guests. All of them had gone through some type of physical or emotional trauma, and every single one of them had found a way through the pain to emerge from the ashes of their former life. Now, they are living a life they could once have only dreamed of, free of the shackles that once bound them so tightly to their trauma. As my series evolved into focusing on published authors, The Phoenix Phenomenon came to signify the incredibly powerful transformation every author goes through. Interviews with my guests highlight just how unique the process of authorship is. Some authors sit down, free write and come away with a manuscript. Others spend years picking it up and putting it back down again or need the help of a ghostwriter like myself to make their dream a reality. Those who I have had the pleasure of ghostwriting with have been able to feel supported in a trusted and safe space while we talk about their life and their challenges. We are able to go much deeper below the surface story they share with the world around them, which allows them to process, 36 ISSUE 97
accept and even celebrate the life they have had. They can finally be at peace with their past and now be ready to open up to the possibility of what this book can do for their future. I can confidently say The Phoenix Phenomenon of authorship is much more than simply fulfilling a word count requirement and wrapping a cover around it – it is a process that has the potential to transform you, your business and your life. An author who is striving for connection to their readers and is propelled forward by a desire to create positive change, whether in the world of parenting, finance, leadership, sport – it can literally be anything – will be remembered, celebrated and supported by those they want to help. This is where the transformation lies. There are only three things you need to set off on your journey of authorship; • An Authentic story
all – will create a disconnect with your readers. They will be able to see through any hint of inauthenticity. Likewise, without a clear vision of the impact you want to have by sharing your story with the world, you will be disconnected from seeing it through to fruition. To achieve the ultimate success, you need to be ready to put the effort into all of the above in order to transform and reap the financial, emotional and professional rewards of becoming an author. This is where The Phoenix Phenomenon reaches its conclusion.
Now that you’ve read all of this, consider one thing - Are you ready to ACT and bring your unique, changemaking book into the world? Head to www.roxannewriter.com.au to book in an obligation-free call to secure your project start date in 2021. ca
• A willingness to Connect • The openness to Transform Every single one of us has a story – I firmly believe that – however, staying true to your authentic story and not being worried about what others might think is the first step to transformation through authorship.

SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESS has never been more important, and the solution to our economic recovery! What’s the key to getting not only our local economies growing again, but Australia’s? Following what has possibly been the worst economic period since the Great Depression, what’s the single easiest way to rebuild any economy quickly? Simply, supporting local businesses first by buying local first. This isn’t easy to accurately quantify, but one could guesstimate that at least 30% of everything we buy, is either made or owned by overseas. It’s probably much higher. The number of examples of what’s actually owned by massive overseas giants, starts with something as simple as milk (Italian owned) through to the majority of our favourite Aussie beers, owned mostly by Japanese brewers. Other than the local craft brewers, the rest are owned outside Australia. Clothing, cars, technology, printing, restaurant delivery options, not to mention outsourcing of everything from bookkeeping, graphic design and social media management. Here’s an example. There are currently around 2.1 million businesses in Australia and according to ABS data, 60% of them turnover under $200,000 a year. Change just 10% of what we spend and focus on local owned only and the effect is staggering. It’s an additional $25 billion (yes billion) that stays with locally owned businesses, not overseas! Nine out of ten people say they would buy local. Through my own research and comments from hundreds of people, I think it’s even higher. I believe around 95% would change the way they buy, if they knew who, why and where. The key, without doubt, is awareness. Who are the local businesses and where are they? But it’s also about education. The effect of what’s happening to our industries and our local products and services, and what could happen if we change the focus to local first. Local businesses start to grow, employ more locals, spend more back into the local communities, and pay more taxes that then go into local infrastructure and supporting schools, charities and more. Sunshine Coast Business Now is simply about making it easy to find local businesses, by creating awareness and showing consumers where to go, to find those local products and services and there are keys to making that easier. • Brand and logo are the first part. We have created a series of logos to identify locally owned businesses and they’re free to use. • The local business directory is the simplest way our local businesses can be found. Anyone can Google something, but you get everything, not only local. Our directory only has local businesses, for example, SunshineCoastBusinessNow.com.au is a local business directory for Sunshine Coast owned businesses only. • Marketing and promotion. The biggest headache that 99% of businesses have, is getting some return on their marketing dollar. In most cases, they rely on free social media, which these days, gets virtually zero result. It’s just not possible anymore. Our social
media and e-news platform is about developing a growing emphasis on thinking local, to educate on why, who, where and what and a consumer base that wants to know about a local business. • And it’s free for any local business to list in the directory. We don’t want anything to get in the way of creating local business awareness. The Sunshine Coast has around 25,000 businesses. 60% of those businesses have turnovers under $200,000 and changing just 10% of our spending to local first, has the potential to add an additional $300 million dollars into the local Sunshine Coast business economy. We are not the only local businesses focus platform, but we are the only one with a number of key differences others don’t have: • The focus is on locally owned, not just made. It’s all about the money staying here. • It’s also about regionalising. There’s no benefit in knowing a local hairdresser in Perth, when I’m on the Sunshine Coast. There’s also no point in focusing attention on all the independent locally owned milk producers nationally (or whatever) when the local one here is forgotten. • Our logo is FREE to use by any businesses listed in our directory. • Our directory is simple to list in and simple for anyone looking for a business to use and it’s FREE to list. • Thinking local with the odd post now and then won’t work. It needs to be an ongoing, education campaign, to continuously change the way people think about shopping and thinking local first and importantly why. If you’re a local, that simply wants to shop by supporting our local businesses more, or a local business that would like to list your business FREE in our local directory, scan the QR code to get started now. form.jotform.co/90707302203848 If you’re interested in getting behind Local Business Now in a support, partnership or corporate sponsorship way, email erwin@localbusinessnow.com.au or call 0403 471 540 to discuss the opportunities or find out more. TAFE QUEENSLAND
BEHIND THE LENS Eric Blaich has turned an interest in the creative arts into a successful career that has seen him photograph famous faces and brands across the globe.
Now, the talented photographer is sharing his skills with students on the Sunshine Coast as a teacher at TAFE Queensland’s Nambour campus. Eric has always had a keen interest in the creative arts. Initially drawn to film, he completed a short course in directing after he finished university. However the more he studied the greats of cinema, the more Eric found himself intrigued by the iconic shots people associated with them. “I was always fond of movies and directing, but I became more interested in how a great director created such powerful imagery,” Eric said. Eric began studying photography in 1988 and became a photographic assistant to an advertising photographer in Melbourne, before freelancing his skills – first as an assistant, then eventually as an advertising photographer himself. From there he took a leap of faith and moved to Europe, where the plethora of opportunities saw his career take off. Basing himself in Milan, Eric had the chance to work with modelling agencies, advertising agencies and magazines in what was then hailed as the fashion capital of the world, travelling to other countries across Europe depending on the season and opportunities available. “I’ve been able to work with some very creative people throughout my career, from creative directors and production managers to stylists and make-up artists, so I was fortunate enough to work with people from all over the world from all kinds of different backgrounds. It’s definitely been an interesting life,” Mr Blaich said.
38 ISSUE 97
After returning to Australia in 1992, Eric and his partner (who is a successful production manager) started Daylight Studios, which went on to become one of Melbourne’s most prominent advertising photography studios. By the time they sold the business in 2005, Eric had a roster of well-known national and international clients he photographed campaigns for, and his studio had hosted and produced shoots for a suite of big-name celebrities. “We gained a lot of exposure for our high end production values and experience in constructing sets and client liaison, hosting shoots for the likes of Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and even The Eagles while they visited Australia,” Eric said. “We once spent a week building a set so a magazine could shoot in the bottom of a fully mosaic-tiled pool with Linda. There was never a dull moment.” In 2001, Eric and his partner moved to the Sunshine Coast to pursue a more relaxed lifestyle, and he has since continued to freelance his skills for national and international clients, commuting interstate for shoots.
Having achieved his own success, Eric set his sights on skilling the next generation of photographers, and now teaches the Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging in the new, purposebuilt photography studio at TAFE Queensland’s Nambour campus. “I really enjoy the enthusiasm of people at the start for their journey. It’s been really amazing seeing my students’ progression from the start of the year to now,” Eric said. Eric encourages anyone interested in a career in photography to follow their passion and develop their skills to make the most of the opportunities available. “With the way technology is evolving, it’s an exciting time to work in photography and the creative arts. With every new platform comes new opportunities,” Eric said. “It can be scary chasing a dream you are truly passionate about, but creative people who are good at their craft will always be in demand.”
“It’s become easier over the last few years, with technology enabling me to work remotely before COVID-19 had even hit,” Eric said. “The travel restrictions have impacted people in different ways depending on their requirements, but it has also provided opportunities for photographers to shoot to brief for clients interstate, as long as they can interpret the work.”

WHAT DOES THRIVE MEAN TO YOU? WITH VICTORIA BERRY
Everyone’s definition of a thriving business is different. It could mean it’s a cash cow to the owners, or it could mean it provides the owners with sufficient cash to enjoy more time with their family. At Bookkeeper Hub we take a ‘bit of both’ approach – we want our clients to spend less time on their bookkeeping and paperwork, so they have more time to either grow their business or spend time doing the things they want. Naturally, the ability to do this takes a desire to let go – it’s really hard for most entrepreneurs or small business owners to take the leap to let someone else take control of their finances. The good news is that there are many baby steps that can be done to achieve this. The easiest way to start is to create systems in the following order: 1. Data Capture – use an accounting package such as Xero which feeds the bank transactions daily; this reduces the time spent on entering information.
2. Receipt Capture – use an app such as Receipt Bank that links to Xero. You either email the bill or take a picture on your phone using the app, then it extracts the data, making reconciliation of your bills quick and easy. 3. Regular reporting – regular reports showing Money Owing to you and by you to make sure you can keep on top of your cash flow. These allow you to partially let go of the finance function, yet still be in control. Couple this with more in-depth reporting or Profit First and you can relax, knowing your finances are taken care of. This frees up your time to make your business thrive. Bookkeeper Hub can help set you up with the systems mentioned above and either do the bookkeeping and report preparation, or teach you how to use Xero most efficiently. ca

HOW TO HELP YOUR
BUSINESS THRIVE According to the dictionary, the definition of thrive is: 1. to prosper; be fortunate or successful, 2. to grow or develop vigorously; flourish. Everyone’s definition of fortunate, successful or flourish is different, as is what everyone wants from their business. You’ve probably heard of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs talking about the basic needs that humans require to survive. Mike Michalowicz in his book ‘Fix This Next’ converts this to a Business Hierarchy of Needs. He claims in order for your business to thrive, and therefore for you to thrive, you need to meet the following needs. His logic is that you need to meet each of these levels before moving up to the next one in order: 1. S ales – you need to get your sales processes in order – this creates cash in your business. 2. P rofit and Retention of Cash – this provides stability in your business.
5. L egacy – your business needs to thrive to allow you to have sufficient performance to build something lasting that is not about you, but a long-term legacy for those around you. It seems quite simple when it’s explained in this manner, but naturally this is a grand overview. At HBA Encompass, we work with our clients to determine which level of the Hierarchy of Needs they are on. We then determine strategies to lock down this level and move to the next one. Each person’s situation is different and an individual approach is needed. If you would like to see how your business can thrive, give us a call on 07 5444 5094 or check our website www.hbaencompass.com.au ca
3. Order – this means efficiencies in what you do.

energies WITH JEAN SHEEHAN // MILLENNIUM EDUCATION According to Sacred Geometry, 2020 was all about ‘I am free to be me.’ As we come to a close on an amazing year, it is time to reflect on what you have learnt, achieved and been. Where have you expressed you as you?
How do you apply this to your everyday life for 2021?
This is a natural progression into the 2021 energies where we now move to ‘This is ME’. It is time to awaken to all possibilities of who we can be. It is a massive time to stop criticizing ourselves and others.
creating a divine life for you.
Sacred Geometry has the number 21 (from 2021) as a number ‘8’, which is about integrating all we are and being who we are. Some may feel like retreating on some level as they know what makes them tick and makes them happy. For others, it may have them full being in the world and flaunting themselves. Either way is perfect. The opposite number of eight is two. In Sacred Geometry, this is a time to wake up. This is a time to stop judging yourself for being you. The pureness of yourself is absolute love.
Great question. Each and every day for 2021, use the affirmation of “I am awake to all possibilities this year as I am ME. I am the genius of my life.” Each morning, saying this will set the energy and quantum reality in

THE WORLD'S BEST 5G SMARTPHONE IS HERE
The iPhone 12 range on Australia's best network, Telstra WITH SHANE SAYLE // TELSTRA STORE KAWANA The long-anticipated, Apple iPhone 12 Range is out and it’s everything 2020 needs to end the year on a high note. The new smartphones have been released in 4 new models – the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro & iPhone 12 Pro Max. Is all the fuss really worth it? We think so, and we can tell you exactly why. So, let’s get to know these new models a bit. Our favourite new feature is the 5G capability on all models, enabling access on Australia’s best 5G network, Telstra, which is projected to reach 75% of the population by June 30, 2021 and is already rolledout across 331 suburbs in QLD!
This means significantly faster downloads, faster gaming and better security. Let’s put it this way, whether you’re working on the go and need to download large files, or if you’re travelling (or can’t be bothered travelling to the couch with the TV) and want to stream high quality movies, 5G opens up endless wireless speeds for every user. No. more. lagging! But it isn’t just faster, it’s smarter. When your iPhone doesn’t need the 5G speeds, it will automatically use the 4G to save your battery life. Other than this, they have a ceramic shield glass making it the strongest and toughest iPhone yet – but it’s also beautifully thin and lightweight. Regular cameras look out because
you’re not going to be needed anymore… The iPhone 12 camera includes improvements to lowlight performance and features like Night Mode. It also uses computational photography to bring out all the finer details in images and a level of texture and colour that you won’t believe. There are so many other features and extras that are complete gamechangers within the smartphone space, but it might take a few more pages to explain them all, so come in and chat to your iPhone experts across the Sunshine Coast to find out more. GET READY –
they are coming! WITH ROD RUSSELL // SAVVY BUSINESS SALES The Sunshine State offers affordability, liveability, and many lifestyle choices, so it is no surprise that we will see a mass influx of residents relocate from the southern states, post Covid-19. Keen to retain premium lifestyles, ‘blue chip’ businesses will be their target, and they are in short supply. Enquiry levels for businesses priced in the $1m - $5m sector has been strong. These buyers are commercially minded, cashed up and will do whatever it takes (including two weeks quarantine), to secure their dream business. We recently received two full price offers ($2.5 million) on a newly listed, Disability Accommodation business. The level of buyer enquiry was high, with 25% coming from southern states. The successful cash offer was from a Sydney-based senior executive. He and his family are ready to relocate to S.E QLD for a premium business and an unrivalled lifestyle. Many business owners have wrongly assumed business sales are slow and prices are soft. This is certainly
not the case and enterprises with annual net profits of $300K plus are already in high demand. The returns offered will easily eclipse that of property, shares and superannuation. With thousands on the move to our stunning part of the world, it is an opportune time for business owners to talk to a professional and learn what price is achievable for their business. Commentators are making bold predictions about the business sales market in 2021; timing, location and limited supply are the key factors when appraising in this unique market. Businesses generating substantial profits and revenue growth during a difficult year can capitalise on perfect market conditions as buyers clearly outnumber sellers. The opportunity that only knocks once may have arrived, so prepare your business, obtain a qualified appraisal and…

SHOULD I INSTALL BATTERIES
on my solar system? WITH BRET DAVIS // WHOLESALE SOLAR
It is important to understand that there are two types of solar battery storage setups that you can choose for your home:
Bret has been passionate about solar as long as he can remember. With over 30 years in Off-grid systems mean exactly that – your property is not connected to the electricity grid at all. One hundred per cent of your electricity is generated by your solar panels (well, unless you need to use a diesel generator as backup) and is stored in batteries for use at night.
Hybrid systems are setups where your property is
Your property is its own electricity self-sufficient ‘island’: no meter, no electricity bills. Note that totally off-grid setups are very expensive - you are looking at $30,000 upwards. This is why most off-grid solar owners live in rural and remote areas where it can cost tens of thousands of dollars just to connect to the distant grid. In these situations, it can be economically viable to invest in a great quality off-grid solar system instead.

Chilean-born Antonio Puelma shares two of his Chilean favourite foods and destinations. Empanadas de pino (Traditional baked turnover pie with a meat and onion filling). Empanadas are found in most Latin American countries; however, it is in Chile where the pino filling was born, containing finely chopped onion, diced meat, hard-boiled egg, raisins and a black olive (watch out for the pip, it can break a tooth, as one of my companions find out on our last trip). Empanadas are a tradition very few Chileans can resist.

One of Antonio’s favourite places to enjoy the empanadas is in Valparaíso, a beautiful and colourful city in central Chile. It is most famous for its steep funiculars and colourful clifftop homes. Antonio enjoys his camarones in Coquimbo, the mid-north coast of Chile and the beginning of the Pisco Trail. This is the sublime area of Chile, where the national drink, Pisco, is made. It is also well-known for trekking and other outdoor activities. It’s not far from La Serena, so you can combine your trip with a stop off at Isla Damas, where you can spot penguins on one of the many sandy beaches. ca
Owner of the beautiful See Restaurant at Mooloolaba, Chilean-born Antonio is a massive fan of food with flavour and travels around to world to find the best flavours. Antonio and his wife Wendy are a power team that are rarely away from their beloved Restaurant. Their friendly demeanor and service brings the locals back time and time again.

ONLINE VISIONS
DO YOU NEED TO KNOW
more about eCommerce? WITH YVETTE MOREAU // ONLINE VISIONS
It’s no secret that whilst many industries and businesses have suffered from the economic impacts of COVID-19, it has brought unprecedented growth of eCommerce. Australia Post reports, “eCommerce has been booming since late March. National growth since the pandemic was announced by the WHO as up over 73% year-on-year (YOY).”
Adapt a mobile-first strategy and see a significant shift in eCommerce conversion rate.
If eCommerce hasn’t been at the forefront of your business strategy before, then now is the time to adapt! Here are a few factors to consider when planning your eCommerce growth strategy.
FAST AND RELEVANT ONSITE SEARCH
USE THE RIGHT ECOMMERCE SOFTWARE PLATFORM Before expanding on an already outdated or inefficient eCommerce website, take time to review your options and don’t let your eCommerce platform capabilities limit your growth potential; in particular, if your business sells wholesale, has a large product catalogue, multiwarehousing, complex pricing or product configurations, requires a multi-site architecture or sells internationally. These are the key areas where differences in eCommerce platforms start to become more divided. INTEGRATE YOUR BACK-OFFICE SYSTEMS Leverage the latest eCommerce technology to integrate your eCommerce platform with your ERP and business systems. You can then comfortably expand without the inefficiency of disconnected systems dragging you down. OPTIMISE FOR MOBILE With mobile devices dominating at an average of 60-70% of all website traffic, it’s never been more important to offer a great onsite customer experience on mobile.
DON’T BE ALWAYS OUT OF STOCK If you often have items out of stock, look into how this can be better utilised on your website by integrating with your warehouse inventory, using waitlists, out of stock notifications, backordering, pre-orders and alternative product recommendations. Did you know there’s actually a profession now called Searchandising? Yes, onsite search has become so critical to eCommerce conversion rates that leading online retailers have staff dedicated to fine-tuning results for optimal relevancy. Why? It's simple, a customer who searches is more likely to buy. UNDERSTAND PCI COMPLIANCE It’s surprising how many businesses still aren’t aware of PCI compliance. If you’re transacting online, handling customer information or credit card details, research PCI compliance online and what you should be doing to protect this information. Operating outdated eCommerce software on Magento, Wordpress or similar open-source solutions is a common breach of these guidelines due to software security vulnerabilities and most businesses are unaware they are risking penalties for non-compliance.

TOP TIPS FOR
property investing WITH YASNA HAWTHORNE // LJ HOOKER MOOLOOLABA Are you looking to buy an investment property, but not sure where to start? Here are some steps to assist you through this important process: 1. Review your personal cash flow and budgets An important step is understanding how much cash you have to invest in property and whether you can afford the cash flow impact on owning an investment property. This can be as simple as listing all your assets, including incomes, and working out your expenses. Work out how much you have as a deposit, making sure you don’t over commit, or how much you will need to save for a deposit. Normally a lender likes you to have 20% deposit. 2. Get pre-approval Once you understand your personal cash flow and budget, the next step is to talk to LJ Hooker Home Loans to find out how much they would be prepared to lend you and what the interest rate would be. It is recommended that you get pre-approval for an amount so you can go searching for a property with certainty, based on how much you can spend. This will also dictate where you can purchase and what type of property you can purchase e.g. a house or apartment, new or old. You should also consider how you will structure your loan. Should you go for interest only or principal and interest? Should you lock the rates in on a fixed term, leave it variable or go half/half? The answers to these questions may depend on the economic environment at the time and as always, seek counsel from the professionals before making a commitment!
Yasna commenced her career in real estate at the age of 18 and hasn’t looked
3. Set your goals What are your goals? What are you looking to achieve? It is important to be clear about these and talk to experts such as your accountant and financial advisor. You need to consider your short and long-term goals. For example, if you are looking to retire in 10 years, perhaps start with a 10-year plan then break it down to five yearly, yearly, bi annual, monthly and weekly timelines. This will help clarify what you need to achieve through your investments. 4. Talk to your accountant

PRINTING MATTERS...
no really, printing does matter THE INKSPOT COMMERCIAL PRINTERS
It’s true the majority of people spend a big part of their day stuck behind a computer. Our personal belief is that in their down time, their free time, their leisure time, they really don’t want to read other stuff on a computer. Our belief is people still very much love to turn the pages of a book or a magazine - they love print. Having that real product in their hands, turning the pages one by one. It’s enjoyable, relaxing and it’s practical. We want to take a second to bust the myths about the switch from paper to digital and give print the acknowledgement it deserves. A consumer survey conducted between 2015 and 2018 by Toluna, a global polling firm says, “Our survey results confirm that, even in our increasingly digital society, a large majority of people see the benefits and value of print on paper. This not only includes leisure reading, but also critical tasks like managing finances.”
• 79% of consumers surveyed agreed that print on paper is more pleasant to handle and touch when compared to other media, including 73% of 18 to 24 year olds. • 73% feel reading a printed book or magazine is more enjoyable than reading them on an electronic device. • 68% find it easier to track their expenses and manage their finances when they are printed on paper. • Mobiles or smartphones are seen as the least relaxing way to read, with only 30% preferring this method.
The survey highlights the benefits of print on paper for learning, literacy and providing a deeper understanding of information.
This survey lights us up because clearly, we love print. We are thrilled to hear that whilst the digital age is here to stay, consumers still very much see a long-term place for print. m
For example, the survey spotlights key facts, including:

MANAGEMENT
liability insurance WITH SARAH FISHER // AUSTWIDE INSURANCE BROKERS These days there are some pretty big risks involved in being a company director, partner or trustee, with onerous duties and responsibilities. If someone thinks you have not lived up to them, rightly or wrongly, there can be serious legal action. No matter the business, its size or structure, private companies, directors and officers are exposed to the legal consequences of unintended errors arising from their actions. This can be as varied as shareholders who suspect mismanagement, investors who feel they’ve been misled, trade association investigations, industry regulatory bodies or perhaps a liquidator if the company is thought to have traded while insolvent.

Build a bridge and get over it! WITH CHRISTIAN DAVIES // TECODA
ROAST TURKEY

WITH JACK BAILEY // FRESH MEATS
Covid pushed a remote workforce into action, however; what about the technology left behind in the office? What happens when you can’t afford the time, training or cost of replacing an entire arm of your business processes?
INGREDIENTS
Bridges is bespoke coding that brings your systems together – the first step in saving businesses experiencing extreme change. You don’t have to “throw the baby out with the bath water” to connect and automate your systems. A software bridge may be exactly what’s needed to; • Connect off-prem to on-prem. • Start automating processes. • Create visibility across departments. • Avoid double data entry. From our Managed IT and Software Development perspective, we have seen staff numbers reduce and remote working increase. Where we have seen software bridges become most valuable is; 1. Automating data transfer from legacy software to online accounting. 2. Creating a remote access portal to an on-premises machine. 3. Developing management dashboards for centralised reporting. 4. Retask existing staff from data entry positions. Virtualisation, cloud solutions and the ever-increasing IoT creates a maze of buzz words and many ways to get lost (or just overwhelmed) within the journey of business technology. What it also creates is OPPORTUNITY – to reassess your needs, growth goals, available budget and your road to life after Covid. If you were to look at your current systems and solutions, knowing you don’t have to replace the whole system to get increased efficiencies, would you take the first step? If yes, you can reach us on 07 5353 5178 or email info@tecoda.com.au ca www.tecoda.com.au

WHAT DOES IT MEAN
to thrive? Verb, to prosper; be fortunate or successful. To grow or develop vigorously; flourish. If I asked you how you have survived or thrived over the last six months, or plan to over the next six, what would you say? These 15 businesses are represented on our cover. Being our THRIVE FEATURE, we wanted to share some stories of how local businesses have THRIVED, or how they plan to THRIVE or tips for you to THRIVE.
Vickie and Dranko Magic Matters Magazine
Vickie and Dranko Magic, owners of Matters Magazine, are proud to still be alive and well in these pretty tricky times. The last six months haven’t been simple for all. We are definitely NOT all in this together, with each and every business on their individual journey. That said, the community of the Sunshine Coast is definitely the most supportive we have ever been part of, and we are proud to hold our head high and shout from the rooftops over and over about the importance of helping each other THRIVE.
Our aim is to inspire you to think outside the square, to ask the question – What else could be possible for me? What else could we do in our business to help us thrive? Congratulations to our cover thrivers: Ann Donnarumma from Demi International, Victoria Berry from HBA Encompass Accounting, Rachael Yurko from Thrive Financial, Sarah Fisher from Austwide Insurance, Melissa Austin from Brilliance for Business, Luke Hawley from Marketing Australia, Marilyn Brayshaw from Astute, Sally Doran from Infectious Clothing, Madeline Klein from Klein Legal, David Kelly from Platinum Property, Ferre De Deyne from Big Kart Track, Kelly Goopy from Goopy Hair, Jean Sheehan from Millennium Education, Jo Saxelby from To Hold and To Have and Dianne Conley from Blink Living. f www.mattersmagazine.com.au
TWO $5,000 SCHOLARSHIPS TO
ENCOURAGE YOU TO THRIVE One thing we are sure of, at Demi International, is that the learning environment is a wonderful opportunity to thrive. Our passion is to provide exceptional training in the personal services industry, beauty, makeup, hairdressing, barbering, remedial massage and yoga. Guiding others to discover their own beauty and well-being daily creates a culture of helping others grow and flourish. The learning journey is never just about the theory, the books and learning the skills of a trade. It is also very much about learning limitations, strengths, resilience, commitment and creating an ability to communicate and connect with others in meaningful ways. Students learn through experience in the classroom about their own body, skin, hair and health and flourish with that knowledge. They then take these learnings out of the classroom and into the supervised clinic where they help people from the community feel great about themselves too. In a learning environment that is well-supported by industry, including visiting experts, students are immersed in the real world of the industry they are studying to become a part of. Students have the chance to absorb ideas that push the boundaries of foundational learning, inspiring them to reach further as they discover their natural talents for specialty areas, where they flourish. Education in personal services is more than skills and knowledge, it enhances and gives back, making the experience of life for the people who visit those practising in the industry more beautiful. We believe that in doing what you love, you help to create a better world. This is also why we are giving away 2 x $5000.00 scholarships to kick start the career of one hairdresser and one barber, passionate about this creative and rewarding industry. f www.demiinternational.edu.au

HBA Encompass has been a paperless accounting firm for a number of years. That was extremely fortuitous, which has become evident this year, when we were all first forced to move home. Being paperless means that we are able to basically walk out of the office, shut the door, perhaps grab a headset or two on the way out, but be able to continue to service our clients from home. We learnt to embrace more technology than we were already using. We’ve always had the thought process that automation is the key to providing successful delivery of services to our clients. Not all of our clients have been so quick to embrace technology and that's fine. But when Covid hit and we all moved home, what it did do was force them to deal with this technology, whether they liked it or not. Gradually, they've come to embrace this. It may be little things such as an electronic signing of a document, electronic signing of an engagement letter, uploading or emailing documents. Even little things like learning how to condense files into a zip file and email, so it's a smaller file size. It is not natural to everybody. It’s been a learning curve, but what it has done is allowed us to focus on the delivery of awesome services, rather than manual data entry. So, it’s actually set us up well for the future that we can embrace technology, we can automate as much as is physically possible and who knows where that goes with the AI of the future? At the end of the day, it all comes back to customer service and giving our customers the best of our skills. f www.hbaencompass.com.au

HOW CAN WE
ALL THRIVE? If there’s one key takeaway from 2020 that will help others thrive when they set their goals for the New Year, it is this: There is more than enough. It’s fair to say this year has shown everyone they have an innate ability to go slow. Even those who seem constantly wrapped up in a state of ‘busy’ – and a feeling of not quite ‘enough’. Not enough time, not enough money, not enough (of a) parent, not enough social outings. And then all of a sudden, everyone had to stop. Those who had the best outcomes were able to - in the whirlwind of change that life has been this year – make a very conscious effort to just breathe. Just for a minute. So while at Thrive, our money philosophy has always been about conscious choices (and never about the same rules for everyone) – next year there will be a far greater focus on developing a mindset with room for growth. Take a little longer to set goals with more intention and more thought. It is no longer just about financial outcomes, but how financial decisions have the power to guide quality of life. There’s more than enough of all the good things to go around. What we probably need is a little less of everyTHING, and a little more appreciation of time and the people who matter to us. Life is about thriving, not just surviving. Thrive Financial is a financial advisory business, specialising in small business and personal insurance. Rachael Yurko aims to put the ‘pal’ in principal. HOW SARAH THRIVED
OVER THE LAST SIX MONTHS
Sarah Fisher first started in the insurance field in the 1990s; she has a wealth of experience that she is glad to share with her clients. Sarah is a Senior Associate of the ANZIIF and is a Tier 1 Qualified, Certified Insurance Professional. She loves helping people as much as she possibly can. Sarah offers a few tips for our readers for thriving in tricky times: • Learn to be grateful – gratitude brings the focus on what is going well, and brings more to be grateful for. • Think abundantly - what you focus on, grows. • Don’t sweat the small stuff - if something won’t matter a year from now, let it go. • The universe has got this sorted - go with the flow, trust that the universe does indeed have your back. • Focus on what’s important - remind yourself of the things that matter and focus on that. Sarah shares that over the last six months she has been focusing her attention on personal development. She has also been concentrating on the business and her clients. Sarah has made more effort to ensure catching up with friends and family, as sometimes the busyness of work meant this took a back seat. She is now taking time out to regroup and refocus by getting back to nature, enjoying camping on the weekends. In the next six months, Sarah plans to continue to consolidate her database and look after her existing customers. She will continue to plan short breaks away to ensure she doesn’t get stressed or overwhelmed and will continue to network with fellow sunshine coast business owners to grow her relationships and her business. Life is good when you have a plan to thrive. f Sarah Fisher Austwide Insurance Brokers

THRIVING BY ENSURING
OUR CLIENTS ARE NUMBER ONE Covid-19 has been one of the most challenging and pivotal times for our profession. What usually takes years to roll out, happened in mere weeks – and we were at the coalface of connecting business owners to government stimulus packages. At BFB (Brilliance for Business), we strategically chose to be on the front foot – we were seen as experts on the Covid-19 stimulus packages, both for our clients and other accountants, who reached out for support and guidance. We sacrificed a lot – we worked without abatement (while home schooling kids) for three weeks straight. I clocked over 80 hours and my team also sacrificed many hours and weekends. We were exhausted. I don’t say this for praise, I say this because we were absolutely resolute and committed to our clients. During this time we thrived and it felt like absolute survival – but with the benefit of hindsight, Covid-19 has been transformational for BFB: 1. The BFB team is stronger – all of our team did things we didn’t think were possible. 2. Our client relationships are deeper – we spoke to our clients at a level that only a global pandemic warrants. 3. We loved being proactive – truly proactive. We reached out to clients, not the other way around – and we love it. This is the new normal. 4. Our referrals have gone crazy – we have recruited a new accountant and more to come! All of this has one focus – OUR CLIENTS. They are our absolute number one – and we thrive because of them. We love our clients and to those reading – Thank You. f Melissa Austin Brilliance for Business

BRING ON
2021!
At Marketing Broker Australia, 2020 was always going to be a dynamic year. We launched in November 2019 and like any small business starting up, the focus for us was about ensuring what we had to offer was the right fit for the market. Covid-19 and the shutdown revealed three essential insights. First, the only marketing that all businesses held onto was their website. Business owners understood just how important their website was, and even in a shutdown, would not turn it off. Second, business owners need flexibility with their marketing. They need to be able to turn it on and off as needed and change their marketing tactics just as fast. Thirdly, the avalanche of free advice, online courses, Zoom workshops, webinars and more, highlighted just how overwhelming and complex marketing for small businesses has become. Too many business owners are not sure who to trust, how much to spend or even where to start. It gave us confidence, that even when our business slowed between March and May, what we were offering matters. Business owners need free, independent, quality advice about the marketing of their business. Our ability to package multiple services together from numerous providers made us the ideal partner for businesses applying for grants. The Queensland Government approved 90% of the applications submitted that met the criteria, with our proposals attached. We are grateful for the lessons of 2020. We know we have much work to do, to help more businesses on the Sunshine Coast get more out of their marketing. f Luke Hawley Marketing Brokers Australia

BUSY TIME
FOR ASTUTE The pandemic no doubt caused disruption to the lives of many Australians. From clients mid-transaction, to others whose circumstances have changed and are needing help, we’ve had many reach out to us looking for assistance. For some, it’s been a simple chat to let them know we’re here for them, while for others it’s been the reassurance that we can continue to provide service and solutions during uncertain times. Video conferencing has given clients the confidence of a safe and socially distant discussion, while providing your broker the chance to truly understand your needs. We’ve seen an uptake in lenders accepting digital signatures, meaning many loan documents can be viewed, signed, and returned anytime via your tablet or phone. We can also electronically retrieve bank statements for you, meaning no need to print out or request printed statements from your bank. For others, we have been able to provide financial security moving into the future, with many looking to refinance to something more affordable or stable. With access to hundreds of loan products from dozens of lenders, we’ve been able to provide solutions that best suit their circumstances and goals, which may very well have changed since the impact of Covid-19. Also for our clients doing it really tough, we’ve been able to provide support to organise assistance from their lender. With the use of technology and a suite of other services, such as Insurance Brokers and Financial Advisers on hand, I’ve always aimed to offer a holistic solution, and help provide stability to those who need it. f www.astutefinancial.com.au/members/mooloolaba

THRIVING PRINCIPAL AND
AUCTIONEER AT PLATINUM PROPERTIES After open heart quadruple bypass surgery in April 2019, David Kelly of Platinum Properties is happy to say he is thriving again. David recently completed six months cardiac rehabilitation at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. At 65 years young, he was about to retire. However, after this little mishap-come-miracle, he now has a renewed outlook on life feeling that he has been gifted a second chance. David is back in Real Estate Sales and Auctions, and is well and truly ready to thrive and to help his clients to thrive too.
David & Jo Kelly Plantinum Properties
David’s 30 year property passion has been reignited by his new lease on life, leaving him ready, willing and now very able to concentrate on the current demanding property market. With a current oversupply of tenants requiring immediate accommodation, he is focusing on listing sale dual occupancy properties to attract investors to the substantial returns on buying investment properties rather than earning next to no interest in the bank. One such property coming onto the market is a home for all seasons, and three different tenants. Located on a hilltop, this is a landscaped 1500m2 allotment with expansive timber balconies, all affording sweeping rural views to the North to Mt Ninderry and East to Mt Coolum and the ocean. Two separate dwellings above the garages, both can be accessed via external or internal stairs and each level has three built-in bedrooms, all with ensuites. All in all this could be a holiday hilltop resort as three or more families could live here. The potential is a home for all seasons, with eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms, ample garaging and parking. INFECTIOUS CLOTHING COMPANY
THRIVING ON THE COAST
Anyone who questions whether they can be successful right here on the Sunshine Coast should speak to Sally and Pete Doran to get the assurance they need. This enterprising couple swapped Sydney for the Coast seven years ago and have never looked back. Queenslander Pete began the business in 2001 in Sydney – having worked as an emergency nurse for 20 years – in response to the demand for more comfortable and efficient medical uniforms. Sally describes moving to the Coast as “coming home”. “With young children, we wanted to get out of inner city living and we had family here, too,” she says. As a former nurse Pete knew the products; he used to wear them. He knows what customers want so can provide a really informed customer service. “We are fortunate to be in a business that is thriving at this time and feel for so many others that are struggling. Our main challenge is keeping supply chains intact given the global shutdowns,” Sally says. Thanks to long-term relationships with their suppliers, they have had no interruptions at this stage. Pete and Sally have seen unprecedented demand for scrubs in the past month, almost doubling their workload. “We are always investing in new tech to streamline both our customer and team experience. These include new website platforms, shipping and inventory management software and customer help desk software,” Sally says. Infectious Clothing Company also now include corporate uniforms, plain and branded, to their already successful range. THE BIG KART TRACK
IS THRIVING AGAIN Covid-19 closed down Big Kart Track for nine long weeks. In those nine weeks the bills kept rolling in; the little fat saved up for a rainy day certainly was eaten into by the storm. Owner Ferre De Deyne says he certainly had a few moments of wonder about his 37-year business, with many thoughts like; Would we get through? Would we still be standing at the end? Would there be light at the end of the tunnel? Being a person who always looks for the silver lining, Ferre believed everything would be okay. Luckily, Queensland slowly began to open. At first there were a limited number of visitors allowed to enter the premises. The good news for him and others locally is that Queensland is now open and locals have been able to travel. Where people had been taking quick trips to Bali or Phuket, they are now staying home and seeing more of the beautiful Sunshine State, resulting in Big Kart Track being busier than ever, having a fruitful winter and spring school holiday season. “We don’t take it lightly. We know that we must continue to offer our very best, ensuring that our service remains second to none,” Ferre says. “We have a remarkable team, always ready with big smiles to welcome our visitors, we offer a clean Covid-friendly environment, but most of all we offer FUN.” After 37 years, FUN is still our absolute priority, it’s our middle name. Ferre’s favourite saying is: “Rule number one, it has to be fun!” f Ferre De Deyne Big Kart Track

OPPORTUNITIES
TO THRIVE
Imagine a world where we all knew that no matter what, there is an opportunity for us to THRIVE! This was my awaken to the JEAN-I-O-US zone as I call it. My childhood led me to be the best version of me that would not only see life as the best, but also know that it is okay to thrive and shine your brilliance. Let me explain. As a child, I experienced physical, chemical, emotional and mental abuse. Constantly told, ‘You are fat, ugly and no one could love you,’ I survived rather than thrived. It wasn’t until I was 16 years old, on Christmas day, when my Mum died and I became homeless, that I decided I would design my life. This may gross you out, but bear with me. I thrived by learning to find abandoned food on the ground or bin to eat, by sleeping during the day at parks so I was safe and staying awake at night so I was not hurt, raped or killed. The things I learnt to survive taught me to thrive and create an award-winning business, internationally recognised and creating my own accredited healing modality. I learnt how to be resourceful, have stamina, set my mindset, look for the best in everything and everyone and have gratitude. I learnt passion for supporting others and drive to make sure others lived their best life. My pain became my reason to make my life amazing and thrive and I want that for others too. You too are the JEAN-I-O-US! f www.MillenniumEducation.com Jean Sheehan Millennium Education
HOW WE HAVE THRIVED AT
‘TO HOLD & TO HAVE’ JEWELLERS
As a studio we were recently finalists in the JAA Australia and New Zealand jewellery design awards and our Apprentice WON the junior category for 2020. Both of these are exceptional industry achievements at any time (awards are held bi-annually), but to do so ‘at such a time as this’ meant the world to us and was hugely encouraging. It was a fabulous endorsement from our peers. At the peak of the difficulties with Covid we upgraded our workshop and purchased new equipment from Germany – which yes took many months to arrive. This new equipment allows us to be more efficient with our metal welding, and increases our work flow capacity. We also created a fresh new look to our website, which we and our clients are loving. Keeping an attitude of looking forward, we continued to serve with excellence in quality of manufacturing, design and customer care as we also continued to mail purchases free of charge, hand deliver locally with no contact and undertook all Covid measures. We have kept manufacturing and loving what we do as we serve the Sunshine Coast and Australia, our Facebook/Instagram community of 40 000 either in store or online. As we all seek to be reminded of everything that is good in life, ‘To Hold & To Have’ presents stunningly and lovingly exquisite jewellery for purchase in store and online. We are also available to care for and repair your jewellery in our workshop. Jewellery that reminds you when you wear it that life is still very beautiful, should be enjoyed now more than ever. f ‘To Hold & To Have’ - Your Engagement, Wedding Manufacturing & Repair Jewellers www.facebook.com/toholdandtohavejewellers Jo Saxelby To Hold and to Have Jewellers

THE LOCAVORES ARE THRIVNG
on the Sunshine Coast WITH ROZ WHITE // WHITE'S IGA
Being a locavore is so easy when you live, eat and play right here on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. We are surrounded by beauty and abundance and enriched by creative entrepreneurs and foodpreneurs, which makes fresh and local food solutions simple and accessible. So, what is a locavore? A locavore is a person who chooses to consume food that is grown, raised, or produced locally, usually within 200 kilometres from home. A 'Locavore' connects food consumers with the food producers within a small targeted radius, developing better food networks, improving local economies and enriching health, environmental, community and social impacts. Local products not only keep money in our community, they make it from ‘farm to store’ in the shortest possible timeframe, which makes it climate friendly as well as fresher than fresh. White’s IGA’s exclusive tractor logo identifies and highlights local products. When you spot ‘Lorrie
Locavore’ marking a variety of products throughout the store, you know it has been created by another local family who delivers it to our family to nourish your family and our community. White’s IGA locavore program was officially launched in 2013 and has seen the Sunshine Coast supply network grow exponentially with literally hundreds of products stocked throughout our five Sunshine Coast supermarkets from fresh and local beans, strawberries, potatoes, pineapples, prawns, ham, lettuce, limes, lemons and avocados, to name just a few. There is also tea, coffee, water, yoghurt, milk, cheese, flowers, pasta, eggs, dressings, condiments, gourmet bakery, locally made cookies, biscuits and more! Why not create your very own ‘locavore’ platter for Spring entertaining and Summer fun?

WHEN SOMEONE VISITS YOUR WEBSITE,
engage with them before they leave WITH ANTHONY VYNER // CONVODOJO
It's now easier than ever! What can we do to help engage the users on our website? Well, with live chat, there's a tool that is most common in a lot of live chat systems which is called “proactive messages. A proactive message pops up and displays to a user who is on the website when they meet a certain amount of criteria. That could be as simple as a person landing on your website, or a person scrolling down the page. Proactive messaging is quite simple to set up and I recommend it as one of the first steps that you should take when you add live chat on your site. I want to briefly go over three different proactive messages that you can use on your website today!
THE WELCOME MESSAGE This is the most important message on your website. It is the first real engaging piece of content that is seen. My tip for a welcome message is to be sincere and human. I like to start my welcome message with a question, compliment or
beneficial information. A well-written welcome message could instigate a conversation straight away, or at least, engage a user enough to stay on the website.
HIGH INTENT MESSAGE This is placed on a particular product or pricing page. Somewhere there is a higher possibility of a user taking the next step to work with you or buy your product. When creating a proactive message for high intent pages, you want to help the user make a decision. I like to use a question, "Is there anything I can help you with today?" These types of proactive messages can help get a lead over the line or at least start engaging with you, so you can help them answer their questions or concerns.
THE SKIP THE FORM MESSAGE This is one of my favourites because I am all for live chat over forms any
day. The ordinary contact form has about an 80% abandonment rate, but live chat isn't as high. The skip the form proactive message lets my user know that the form is available. However, they can get the question answered now if they speak to a real human. There is a higher chance the user will talk to you over live chat rather than filling in the form.
Proactive messages are a powerful tool in the arsenal of live chat. I've only highlighted a few, but there are so many inventive ways that you can utilise them on your website. Proactive messaging is real, it's personal and it doesn't take a lot of effort on your behalf to do. PS. Why not add a proactive message to the checkout page? Tell the customer you're thankful for their purchase. m www.convodojo.com

Adam Tomlinson’s dream started in December 2008 during a craft brewery tour in the USA. Twelve years later, it has come to fruition with the opening of Stalwart Brewing Company at Nambour.
Despite many challenges, Adam was determined to open his brew pub and achieved his vision on July 18.
The craft brewery, based at the heritage-listed Club Hotel on Currie Street, provides a high quality range of ales, two of which draw on his Navajo Indian and Kabi Kabi heritage.
Stalwart’s core range of beers reflects Adam’s diverse ancestry: The Sacred Chief honours his great-great-great-grandfather, a Navajo Indian from America’s mid-west who immigrated to Australia in the 1800s during the Gympie gold rush.
He uses Sunshine Coast hinterland water, fresh grain, hops and yeast, and no preservatives or additives.
“A brew pub is about bringing the community together and having a beer over a great story,” Adam says.
“I was so excited to move in here at the start of 2020, but then Covid came, so I was left with a pub with no beer,” Adam says.
The Sunshine Coast Council helped Adam by identifying suitable brewery sites and provided pre-lodgement planning advice. “Council also expedited approvals for plumbing and planning, having suggested the Nambour Entertainment precinct as suitable for this development, and that ensured a swift approval process at minimal cost,” Adam says. His success makes him the perfect candidate for the Local Business Champion series. Economic Development Portfolio Councillor Terry Landsberg says the Local Business Champions series was developed in collaboration with the Economic Resurgence Taskforce to inspire confidence in business and industry, and win back consumer trust and confidence, a key theme of the region’s Economic Resurgence Plan. Local Business Champions: Sharing Stories highlights the success and capability of our local business community. The series acknowledges local business efforts, whether it’s a change in their business models to grow current or new business; new business ideas to recover from Covid; or an inspiring story from a local business owner. Are you a Local Business Champion or do you know of someone who is? start with your logo Does yours need rejuventating?
It is well known that branding is the cornerstone of any company and must convey your business in the marketplace in a short moment of time. As your logo is such an essential part of your brand, you want to make sure it’s done well. Josephine & Steve (One Up Bar Mooloolaba)

A great, professional logo design not only has the power to communicate what you stand for, it will also make a good first impression and help you stand out from the competition. Once you have an idea of what your logo might be, it’s important to engage a professional designer to translate those ideas into a successful business brand. Many different elements come into play here, from colours, shapes and graphics to typography. Isolating each component and what it can do for your logo helps in understanding how the different elements work together. When thinking about your logo, the first thing you want to do is select the right design aesthetic for your brand. There is no one style that is right for everyone, only what’s best for your brand and working with a professional designer will ensure the right solution is created. Here are some design styles to start the process:

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
CLASSIC AND TIMELESS Trendy logos can be fun and exciting, but they can quickly become outof-date. A classic style gives better staying power and can help your business reach a broader audience. MODERN AND MINIMALIST A clean and minimalist style is often chosen to communicate how fresh and modern the business is. The use
of whitespace, minimal details and simple lines results in sleek, pared back logos, and is synonymous with this design style. VINTAGE OR RETRO There is a reason why vintage and retro designs have been on trend for quite some time. They instantly remind you of the past and evoke warm feelings of nostalgia. HANDMADE AND HANDCRAFTED Handcrafted style sends a clear message: this brand is individualistic and stands for handmade quality. The style works well in combination with other styles, like vintage, to underline a unique message. FUN AND QUIRKY This is a popular choice for brands with a young (or young at heart) target customer. Fun and quirky styles tend to be colourful and cute and often use symbols or illustrations, to create a positive and friendly feel. Whether whimsical or a bolder illustration, this style is ideal for bringing out a brand’s fun character. Of course, these styles are not mutually exclusive, and it is possible to combine some styles to suit your brand. It just takes some brainstorming and creativity!
So, if your brand is not communicating what your business stands for, get in touch for a free consultation and let’s create a brand that stands out from the competition. ca www.creativebirddesign.com

MONTVILLE MAGIC IN
Lovestone Cottages
Looking for tranquillity? Look no further than the recently rebranded Lovestone Cottages, nestled above Lake Baroon and surrounded by natural rainforest, including a magnificent 300-year-old White Fig, ‘the Mother of the Forest’. The three cottages feel secluded, away from the hustle and bustle of city life, but are a mere three kilometres from town and artisan shops, including renowned restaurants, cafés, walking tracks, hikes, secret water spots, art galleries, historical museums and an array of local markets. Proud owners Tam and Jon have spent the better part of the last twelve years in Far North Queensland; seeking a change of pace, they decided to move south, to the picturesque Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The fresh mountain air has improved Tam and Jon’s health and mindset, allowing them to create a service that offers a memorable experience, while engaging with their passions for sustainability and giving back to their community. Drawn by the magic of Montville, this husband and wife team fell in love with the local nature haven, revamping the B&B to showcase the surrounding native flora and fauna and are engaging with all the local area has to offer. A horticulturalist by trade, Tam has intimate knowledge and experience in preserving native species and engaging with sustainable land practices. Combined with her many years of hospitality experience, from managing à la carte dining to cruise ship adventures, Tam has a passion for customer care that goes above and beyond. Jon’s engineering background reinforces the need to future proof the property and to masterplan all aspects of the property transformation to maximise its longevity. Jon is a skilled handyman, plumber, carpenter, gardener and enjoys employing his skills in maintaining the B&B. Tam and Jon have renamed the B&B to better reflect the rich heritage and history of the property; Montville Grove is now Lovestone Cottages. More can be found on the ‘Our Story’ section of their website, on lovestonecottages.com.au. Each cottage has also been renamed; namesakes for the large native trees residing near them, Maple, Rosewood, and Quandong, to recognise and celebrate the rainforest’s natural beauty. the front garden and moving onto the cottages. Maple Cottage has undergone a complete transformation, with Quandong and Rosewood soon to follow. We want to provide our guests the opportunity to enjoy the rainforest from luxurious cottages. We actively focus on energy efficiency, swapping high energy bulbs to LEDs; we also recycle and compost wherever possible, returning glass and plastic to the refuse centre and reusing all cardboard, vegetable matter, and grass clippings as garden mulch. Tam has been working on reducing plastic waste by investing in larger, refillable bottles instead of smaller product packaging, also limiting products in the cottages to Australian-made and plant-based. Where possible, we avoid chemicals, opting for organic-based cleaners suitable for the current septic system and kinder to the environment. Our property has been proudly part of the Land for Wildlife program for over 12 years, which supports the regeneration of natural rainforest and native animal habitats. Our ongoing projects include replacing inappropriate exotic species with native plants and trees that will rejuvenate the land to provide crucial habitat for years to come; this also extends to the work we are doing with the Sunshine Coast Council, rehabilitation of the embankment on Narrows Road with native species to help reduce erosion and showcase the landscape’s beauty. Future plans include establishing an on-site sewage system to replace the aging septic system, ensuring clean, reusable water is available for irrigation across the property. We will also install solar energy systems for the cottages and the homestead, Lovestone House. Tam and Jon have worked conscientiously to preserve the
Each cottage has a spa bath fit for two, wood fireplace, self-contained kitchen with accompanying essentials, balcony with BBQ, luxurious bathrobes, and stunning rainforest views from both inside and outside the cottage. Fresh, local produce is created into a generous breakfast hamper (specialised to your dietary requirements upon request). Lovestone Cottages is a couples-only retreat, offering a private romantic getaway with unobtrusive service and packages to pamper.
