EDITOR'S Thanks for reading this issue of the magazine. I wanted to reach out to you and personally thank you for your support. We are often blown away at how many people tell us they love the magazine. It certainly lights us up to know that our hard work over 14 years has paid off. We are always delighted when you stop us on the street and tell us you loved a certain article or a certain issue. We truly believe that one of the reasons for our longevity this far is that we really do listen to what you want. The length of our articles are what they are because we asked you and then did what you said you wanted. There is so much of the magazine that is the way it is because we asked you through our surveys over the years what you wanted and you told us and we delivered that. We are proud of this magazine, proud of its longevity, proud of the awards we have won over the years, and proud we have advertisers that have been with us for between five and ten years. We know that this is a very long time and we are so grateful. Personal thanks a million times over goes out to some of our long time advertisers including:

L O N G E V I T Y F E AT U R E

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO

make it in business?

To start with, I would say that it would depend on who you ask. Some may tell you that you have to give it your all, that you have to sacrifice lots in order to ensure success.

Personally, I have learnt the hard way that my family, my friends and my husband come first. You see, with Matters Magazine in the beginning, I PERSONALLY felt that I had to be in control of everything. So I worked from 5am in the morning till sometimes 11pm at night and I usually did this six days a week. I thought that if I wanted to be successful and have a successful business that meant I had to do, do, do and so I did, did, did. My family didn’t see much of me for the first seven years of the magazine, and it certainly paid off by way of the bottom line. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying I wish I didn’t work so hard, because during that period we won the highly acclaimed Sunshine Coast Excellence Awards – Small Business of the Year Award, a feat that we will be forever proud to have held. But I am saying that the truth is that I PERSONALLY did not have to do all the things that I did. I could have trusted more, had more faith in others and allowed others to take over a little more of the burden I so tightly held on to. On 26 January 2016, everything changed for me when I made a massive decision to change the magazine from eleven per year to just four per year. In that instant, I actually got my life back. Sure, we didn’t make as much money ever again with the magazine by releasing only four issues per year, however I firmly believed the change was for the better in so many ways.

6 ISSUE 98

It was better for my marriage. Better for my children. It was better for my friendships. Better for my health. It was better for the advertisers, who now only had to pay four times a year, instead of eleven, and got a shelf life of thirteen weeks, so fabulous bang for their buck. It was better for the readers too because they had so much more time to read the magazine. It was better for the quality of the magazine too, because instead of having to put something together every five weeks, we now have thirteen and so the quality of every page is so much greater.

So you see, it turned out to be better all around and I truly believe this has had a better long-term impact on our longevity. We celebrate our 100th issue later this year which I am very proud to announce. We have got some amazing feedback over the years and I simply love the fact that this magazine is so well known and loved here on the Sunshine Coast. We have done all we can to truly support local – we print local, employ local and encourage local. We have a vision and a passion to inspire the reader to really step into their brilliance, to think outside the square and to be brave enough to really believe in themselves. So if you asked me now if I think that you need to work HARD AND LONG to have a successful business, I would have to say it really

depends on whether you think success is just about money or also about lifestyle. For me, it’s about lifestyle, and so I say, “Work less, celebrate more, enjoy more. The older we get the more our mortality becomes real.” No one would EVER say on someone’s death bed, “At least they had a successful business even though we hardly saw them.” Why does it sometimes have to take something dire happening for us to wake up to what really matters? I think in a way COVID-19 has been that for some. I think some people have HAD to slow down and realised that actually they can. They have realised that the wheels don’t always fall off when we stop DOING so much. So yeah, my personal advice for longevity of your business is that if you want to keep going long term, you do have to ensure that you don’t burn out. You do have to ensure that you allow others to help and that you give up having to be completely in control of everything like I did. My word for 2021 is SURRENDER. It is about truly trusting that the universe has my back. It’s about putting goals in place, for sure, but then doing the actions I know I need to do to achieve those goals and then actually surrendering the specific goal. You see, it is the specific goal needing to be achieved that causes us upset when it’s not achieved.

So if I put a goal in place, then commit to doing the actions to achieve that (or something else better or worse) and completely surrender to the outcome, then I would get to live a very PEACEFUL, CALM LIFE. Who doesn't want that? www.vickiemagic.com.au

and COVID-19 in 2021 WITH IAN ROBSON // SUNRISE INTERNET

Pre COVID-19, the Sunshine Coast population was approximately 430,000 residents and there were approximately 4.3 million visitors. That’s a 10:1 ratio. Visitors are important, and they expect good internet! Why is it so vital to get the Sunshine Coast’s internet right? International visitors are on hold in 2021. Intra and interstate visitor numbers are expected to increase 100%. The sustained increase in visitors will directly benefit from the region rapidly adopting proper world-class internet. The visitors are vital to the local economy, new growth, new jobs, the airport, the tourism sector and all businesses.

However, visitors to the Sunshine Coast are known to be both surprised and disappointed by the widespread poor performance of local internet.

A leading resort building in Maroochydore with over 100 rooms still has rooms that cannot be connected to the internet via a fixed line. A resort in Twin Waters has questionable wireless internet, performing poorly. In Peregian Springs, there are hundreds of houses in estates that suffer with poor but expensive internet, literally causing people to move away to better areas for internet. A substantial school in the Noosa Shire simply could not get proper internet or telephone lines. All these scenarios can be solved, and the best way to a better future is to enjoy a free audit of the current state of your connection and understand how to move toward the future-proof state that is expected as the ‘norm’ nowadays, especially by visitors to the region. The NBN can cost upward of $70 per month per account and not deliver world-class internet performance. For about half the price, optic fibre internet for multi-dwelling apartments can solve these issues.

That’s right, approximately $1 a day per apartment. The availability of world-class internet across the Sunshine Coast and Noosa will help advance the regional economy and assure repeat tourist visits, as well as attracting new.

It is accepted in Australia today that remote working is normal, and it is inextricably linked to proper internet availability. “…with the flick of a switch our internet services moved to worldclass Gigabit capable internet. Resident and guest satisfaction has skyrocketed with the availability of fast, reliable industry leading internet, which allows our resort to include phone, video and streaming services never before offered. Absolutely Brilliant!” - Eric Van Meurs, Director, Atlantis Resort Marcoola and Director ARAMA (Australian Resident Accommodation Managers Association) m www.sunriseinternet.com.au

Ian has worked across Australian telecommunications since deregulation in the 1990’s as a Management Executive with multinationals, Vodafone and Telstra, and also as a pioneer in the launch of GSM and Fibre Networks. With an intimate understanding of opportunities and challenges for the Sunshine Coast, he is passionate about enabling change in Australia’s low world ranking in internet performance.

THE TRADIES GUIDE TO INSURANCE

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DIE WITHOUT A WILL?

Stolen tools are more than a mere inconvenience – as well as shouldering the replacement costs, your ability to secure work and complete jobs in the meantime is undermined. So, if you'd be lost without the tools of your trade, here are five tech-savvy and affordable ways to protect your tools from being stolen, help you recover them and potentially reduce your insurance premiums. If you're not keeping an up-to-date inventory of all your hand-tools and power-tools, it may well be a case of ‘you don't know what you’ve got ’til it's gone.’ Here are some ways you can protect your precious equipment: 1. Motion sensing camera. 2. Microscopic labelling with DataDots. 3. GPS tracking. 4. Smart padlocks. 5. Digital inventory. Don't overlook a good Business Insurance solution – it may set you back just a fraction of the cost of replacing your tools and can allow you to get on with the job more quickly if you do get cleaned out. ca

In Queensland, if you die without a will it means you have died ‘intestate’. This means intestacy laws of Queensland will determine how your estate is distributed and who may benefit.

Please be aware that any advice offered is General Advice only and has been prepared without taking into consideration your objectives, financial situation or needs. The intestate distribution rules in Queensland state your residuary estate may first go to your surviving spouse(s) and children. If you have no spouse or children, then it may go to your parents. If your parents have passed on, it may go to the following persons: 1. Brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces and if none, then; 2. Grandparents and if none surviving, then; 3. Uncles, aunts and first cousins. If you are not survived by any of the above persons, the Crown is entitled to your residuary estate. If you die intestate, your estate may not be distributed in line with your wishes or be left to those persons you wish to leave it to. This is one of the reasons why it is important to have a will. ca This is general information only and does not constitute legal advice and should not be relied on as such.

‘STATE OF THE NATION’ We recently offered our clients a free JobKeeper assessment to see if they could access the extension until the end of March. Here is a snapshot of 77 different businesses located here on the Sunshine Coast – from micro traders through to $10 million+ turnover businesses. Here is what we found: • 55 businesses don’t qualify. Majority of these have had significant growth – some boasting 1000–1500%. • 22 businesses did qualify – which means they’ve had more than a 30% drop in turnover. Cashflow is tight, despite the ongoing stimulus support. On the one hand, more than two thirds of our clients are experiencing unprecedented growth, fuelled by cashed-up southerners and cashed-up stimulus recipients. They are adapting to market trends and seizing opportunities quickly. This is the GOOD news story for the Coast. But we still have a third of our businesses struggling to recover from the pandemic. They’re keeping their head above water but are relying on a much stronger year in 2021 to get through. It will be interesting to see what those same 77 businesses look like this time next year. ca

2020 – A YEAR OF CONTRASTS. Yandina celebrated the 150th anniversary of the gazetting of the town – the oldest post-colonial town in the local government area. It was also the 25th year of continuous operation of Yandina Art and Framing. A quarter of a century ago, local arts identity and musician Brian Curry first started joining mouldings, backing, mat boards and glass to produce frames of the highest quality. The location changed as the business grew and Brian’s reputation for quality spread further. On retirement in 2015, we promised Brian to maintain the highest standards of quality. Our business manager and artistic director Alice Graham joined us and is fiercely protective of the heritage implicit in everything we do. The longevity of the business has been built on this dedication and can be seen in the work we do, the original local art we offer for sale through to the stock of high-quality art supplies we offer. Taking Brian’s cue, we embrace our history and keep moving with the times. Come and visit us in the transformed butcher’s shop – now home to Yandina Art and Framing! ca

REVERT RATES AND WHY IT’S VITAL YOU REVIEW YOUR FIXED RATE LOAN

WHAT IS MICRODERMABRASION AND DO I NEED IT?

MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR APPOINTMENT WITH A FINANCIAL PLANNER

Are you coming to the end of the fixed rate period on your home loan? Get in quick and have your loans reviewed before it does or else you may find yourself paying a higher interest rate called a revert rate.

Microdermabrasion can help improve your skin’s appearance by reducing fine lines, early sun damage and shallow acne marks. It can help with reducing redness, pigmentation, blackheads, whiteheads, scarring and much more.

So you’ve decided this year is the one where you have everything in order. You’re crystal clear about the direction you’re headed – you’ll nail life and all it throws at you. You book appointments – naturopath, gym, art class, financial planner. Look at you go – #TheDriversSeatRocks.

A revert rate is the variable rate your loan reverts to at the end of your fixed-term length. The interest rate is typically the standard variable rate for that product – and they can be much higher than the fixed rate you were on previously. Why the change? Simply put, by resetting your interest rate on your loan when the fixed rate expires, lenders widen the margin they make on your mortgage. What can you do? A professional mortgage broker will monitor the expiry of your fixed rate and reach out towards the end of the term. They can then approach the lender to reprice your loan or assist you to refinance if that’s the better solution. In any case, if you don't take any action, you could be caught paying more than you expect. ca Astute Financial Management Pty Ltd Ph 0414 789 665 Web astutefinancial.com.au/mooloolaba/ ABN 59 093 587 010 Australian Credit Licence Number 364 253

Microdermabrasion treatments use a minimally abrasive instrument to gently sand your skin, removing the thicker, uneven outer layer, and has many benefits. Your skin regenerates itself every 30 days. This means for best results, the treatment needs to be repeated at two to eight week intervals. On average, it takes from six to twelve sessions for a person to see drastic results from microdermabrasion, however skin often becomes noticeably smoother even after one treatment and better able to absorb moisturisers. The treatment is non-invasive and feels like a gentle suction on your face. It becomes quite relaxing. The Magic for the Face Deluxe Facial includes this treatment and it can be an add-on to any facial. Check out the range of treatments and book online at Magic for the Face Facebook page. 5 signs you need to streamline your business 1

Your business has become disorganised and complicated

2

You’re struggling to keep up with business growth

3

Mistakes and inconsistency are causing problems

4

You’re lacking proper oversight into your operations

5

It’s difficult to manage everything that needs to get done

As businesses grow and change, it’s easy to keep adding new tasks and tools to deal with challenges. Over time this can leave your business feeling cluttered and complicated, while your workday is full of unnecessary ‘busywork’ that distracts you from the real work you need to do.

A growing business is great news, but it can expose problems and inefficiency that didn’t exist before. If your operations and systems aren’t built for scale, you might find that processes which worked well for 20 customers now create bottlenecks and headaches with 100 customers.

Are you ‘fighting fires’ all the time in your business? The source of these fires is usually inconsistent work or a lack of proactive procedures. Treating problems reactively instead of proactively can often make an issue bigger than it could have been, and damage your reputation even if you fix it.

Keeping track of key areas like sales, projects, or inventory is vital to ensure that you have the full picture of how your business is travelling. Without proper systems to monitor and manage these areas, many business owners end up using guesswork instead of making informed decisions.

Every business relies on a variety of tasks being done each day, and it can be a challenge to make sure everyone knows what, when, and how to do them. Without an effective way to manage tasks, mistakes are more common, and you can risk losing operational knowledge if staff leave.

Streamline your business with an expert Hello, my name is Matt, and I’m a business technology consultant. I help Sunshine Coast businesses to set up systems, improve their processes, and utilise new technology. I’ve worked with a variety of businesses, and sometimes all you need is an outside perspective to show you what’s possible. Give me a call to find out how you can make your business easier to manage, more efficient, and more profitable.

Welcome to our LONGEVITY FEATURE. We are thrilled to bring you some amazing businesses that share their story of longevity with us. Congratulations to each and every one of them; well done.

46 YEARS

FAMILY FIRST FOR

46 years

More than four decades ago, Ron Hill began repairing automatic transmissions in a small shed at The Gap in Brisbane. Five years later, he relocated to the Sunshine Coast and started to lay the foundations for a solid business that would stand the test of time – Ron Hill Automatics. After working side by side for years, it was steady growth and Ron’s enduring commitment to his loyal team that enticed Bill and Sandra Olah to buy into the business. With Bill’s boost of enthusiasm and excellent organisational skills, and Sandra’s flair for marketing and exceptional customer service, the trio created what is now a multiple awardwinning business, still standing strong in its original Kayleigh Drive location in Maroochydore. What is their secret to having such longevity? In a year when countless other brick and mortar businesses have been forced to close their doors, and words like “social distancing” have become common vernacular, it is their strong family values, in-depth knowledge

22 ISSUE 98

of the latest technological advancements, and dedication to exceeding expectations that has led to their outstanding reputation and lifelong customers. “We are all committed and understand that we are all in this together, working toward a common goal – to create the best outcome for our customers,” Sandra says. A true family endeavour, the next generation team members continue to infuse positive enthusiasm and new age thinking into the business. From the instant you are greeted by the energetic smiles and laughter of Bill and Sandra’s daughter Rachel, the Service Manager, to the moment you receive your comprehensive analysis and electrical diagnosis from son Tim, an automotive engineer who runs the workshop, you realise this is a family that is happy to serve you. With decade-long employees Tony and Thomas, and apprentices Byron and Riley rounding out the team, you can feel certain that no problem is insurmountable and that a visit to Ron Hill Automatics will feel just like coming home to a place you’ve felt welcome your entire life. f www.ronhillautomatics.com.au

QUALITY STYLE AND COMFORT

since 2008

Terry-Anne started Indigo Living back in 2008. At that time, the Sunshine Coast had little options for stores that offered quality Australian Made furniture. Since then Indigo Living have expanded their range to include IMG Comfort, which offers state of the art Scandinavian style furniture. Their emphasis has always been on quality and helping their customers achieve a stylish look for their home which is unique to them. One of the highlights that they are particularly proud of is achieving the IMG award for Top Studio Store in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. Repeat customers over 37 years love the guidance, knowledge, experience and expertise they know they will receive on each and every visit, while at the same time knowing they won’t ever come across a pushy salesman. 37 years has shown their resilience in the industry, by being adaptable to change with the market and to offer a quality that is dependable.

As a family-owned business we feel it is imperative for all of us to support local, whether it be furniture or a local tradesperson. We need to keep the Sunshine Coast economy strong. Indigo Living is now one of the Sunshine Coast’s leading cutting edge furniture retailers, giving expertise that has accumulated over many years and access to a refined product range, coupled with industry knowledge that is unparalleled on the Sunshine Coast. Purchasing furniture is one of the biggest decisions that you are ever likely to make and one not to be taken lightly. Quality, style and comfort should be the major criteria and value for money is of course crucial. You can rely on their qualified team to source the very best every time. Whether the job be large or small, commercial or domestic, Indigo Living have your needs covered. f www.indigoliving.com.au

WHITE’S IGA –

27 years and counting White’s Grocers was created by Roz and Michael White in 1993 when they first purchased a small convenience store in Maroochydore. Roz and Michael gradually built their grocery business over the past 27 years with the growth of the Sunshine Coast and a continuous improvement model, buying stores with potential and then building them up to become an integral part of each community. After almost three decades in the industry, every day is a new day in this incredibly competitive and ever-changing market. White’s IGA strive to deliver a unique and personalised shopping experience across their five award winning, retail-tainment food stores: each personally designed and created by Roz and Michael and inspired by each community’s unique characteristics. Roz shares that without a doubt the greatest highlight of their business is their people. “Without our team and our customers, we don’t have a business. Our team’s commitment to not just our companies’ values but to the

community is exceptional,” she says. “They inspire us with the depth of care they have for local families and our shoppers. This has been particularly highlighted through the past 12 months through some very stressful and tense months. Our team remained committed, stoic and responsive to ensure our customers’ needs were met and they were reassured we were there for them. “Our team are passionate advocates for our unique White’s IGA Locavore Program which supports a local network and connects local food producers and distributors to our customers.” White’s Grocers are proud Sunshine Coasters and absolutely love everything about the community and its people. “There is nowhere else we would rather be. We feel very blessed to live here and are so very grateful for the support this community has given us over the past 27, almost 28, years in business,” Roz says. f www.whitesgrocers.com.au

APRO ELECTRIX –

The longevity of solar Apro Electrix began in 2012 with a real passion for sustainable energy. They are a local family-owned and operated business with CEC Accreditation as Solar Specialists. Sourcing directly from multiple distributors and solar wholesalers ensures they are able to minimise overheads and guarantee the best ‘Installer Direct’ prices on premium equipment. Brad Moldenhauer had been working in the industry prior to starting Apro Electrix. He just loved seeing so many happy faces as solar power reduced the bills of home and business owners. He knew starting his own solar business could make a positive impact on people’s lives using his expertise while doing his part in working towards renewable energy for future generations.

Starting up a business with a young family wasn’t easy but going through those life experiences as new parents and business owners, Brad says they felt obligated and emotionally driven to invest even more in the future of their children. “No matter how big or tedious any solar installation has been, the results and customer satisfaction really give our career purpose. “For Apro Electrix, knowing that quality equipment is installed with the highest level of workmanship means years of reaping the rewards of solar power and gives us the opportunity to help others. “Yes, we install every system ourselves with no sub-contracting, so every system is installed to the highest level.” f www.aproelectrix.com.au

DI HENSHALL INTERIOR DESIGN –

moving with the times

Di Henshall is a qualified builder as well as a qualified and multi-award-winning interior designer. Having both of these qualifications gives her the advantage of being able to see a clearer picture of practicality and design, giving her clients a well-rounded and balanced design solution. The company started in 1988 on Noosa Sound and employed four people, starting from scratch with just one client. A few years later they moved into an old building in Mary Street, which was renovated over a period of years, before moving to their custom-built premises in Gateway Drive five years ago. Di Henshall Interior Design now work all over Australia and have had projects in New Zealand, UK, USA and Fiji. They work from the ground up with new builds, total renovations and full outfitting of residences with custom furniture and fittings, right down to teaspoons!

26 ISSUE 98

Moving to their custom designed and built building five years ago was a huge move, as they also had to move out of three separate premises (including two cabinetmaking factories), sell the properties and recommence manufacturing and consulting without missing a beat. I asked Di what she thinks has helped with their resilience in their industry over the years, she says, “Moving with the times – technology has infiltrated every aspect of our industry, including how we design, how we draw, how we communicate with clients, how we present design solutions, how we source materials and furnishings. Technology keeps moving, so we have to keep one step ahead of the crowd continually. I spend a great deal of time reading, researching, travelling and training in all areas of design, to make sure that if it is out there – I know about it!” f www.dihenshall.com.au

MONEY MINDSET

magic

I've worked with tens of thousands of women from around the world, most of them switched on, intelligent, hardworking entrepreneurs who are doing their best to create a business they're passionate about and a lifestyle they love. But they come to me because they're searching for a better way. They're working hard, putting in the hours, offering new products or services, building an audience, posting on social media, they're 'doing all the doing', but still not creating the income they desire. The problem is they're not working on the one thing that will help them create the success they're seeking... their money mindset. And that's my speciality. I know what it's like to be a struggling entrepreneur, because after years of trying to make my swimwear business work, I was

$100,000 in debt and on welfare. I couldn't understand why things never worked out for me. When I discovered the Law of Attraction, I realised I was only focusing on what was going wrong, which made me attract more of it. So I did whatever it took to rewire my mind using cutting edge brain technology and ancient secrets, which empowered me to attract what I desired into my life. I went from welfare to millionaire and love nothing more than seeing my clients transform their money mindset, which changes their actions and their outcomes, and suddenly they easily start attacting opportunities, clients, money and more success. If you'd love more prosperity in your life, work on your mindset first, I promise you'll be amazed at the magic you create. ca

A NEW WAY TO BUY, SELL AND EARN PASSION FOR BUSINESS Erwin Brem (left) has been working with and supporting small businesses for the last 30 years. Most recently he has been helping business owners develop their skills in key business drivers and recently developed the local business platform, Sunshine Coast Business Now. Supporting local business is something Erwin has been passionate about for decades. Small businesses have gone through one of the most difficult times in recent history and are not out of the woods yet. Now more than ever, local businesses need to stand out in the marketplace and do more to encourage customers to buy from them and build a business loyalty for them. Erwin looked at Qoin as the natural progression to enable businesses to obtain an advantage over competitors by being part of a community supporting local businesses and their customers.

BAKSLAP JOINS QOIN More than three years ago local Sunshine Coast entrepreneur Raphael McGowan set out to create a product that would make sun protection easier for hard to reach places like our back. In 2011 his 30-year-old sister Tess McGowanChan was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer after finding a mole in the middle of her back. Tess passed away just 11 months later. “Since Tess passed, I wanted to do all I can to increase awareness of sun safety and melanoma while helping to raise funds for research to understand the disease better. This is why Bakslap was created.” Mr McGowan said. “When my team and I discovered Qoin, we immediately started to create an account. It’s an exciting opportunity to reach new customers and to share our products and message locally and across Australia. We had to laugh, as we were only halfway through setting up our account and a customer messaged us through the Qoin App and said they wanted to purchase.” Mr McGowan said. 32 ISSUE 98

CONFESSIONS OF A

ghostwriter

What’s in a name? Everything... when it comes to defining the type of book you are writing!

The majority of the authors I work with have a beautiful balance between sharing a part of their life story as well as knowledge and skills they have accumulated during their time on earth. Because of this, I am often asked – what is the difference between a memoir and an autobiography? You may be inclined to lump them into the same basket, but there is a small distinction between the two that sets them worlds apart in the literary world. Understanding what that small difference is will help you to gain more clarity around what it is you are looking to achieve with your future book. An autobiography is a book that tells the life story of the author from childhood all the way through to the time of writing – capturing all of the major milestones and events that have led them to where they are today. Autobiographies can give you an incredible insight into the lives of people who have been changemakers in their respective field. They let you behind closed doors and into the most intimate scenarios, the things people outside of their personal network never knew about. By sharing these experiences, autobiographies create an incredibly strong connection between the author and the reader. The readers now understand more

about them, and have more empathy and trust. Think Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom as just one of the many examples. In contrast, a memoir focuses on a moment in time in someone’s life. You may be wanting to zero in on a particular element of your life, such as a cancer diagnosis and your battle to overcome it, or how you found yourself financially destitute and you found a way to build wealth from the minimal income you were able to attain. Memoirs can cover multiple seasons of someone’s life, but the events covered are always linked to a central theme and develop this throughout the course of the book. A great example of a well-executed memoir comes from the first interviewee on Season Four of my series, The Phoenix Phenomenon. Leigh Robshaw wrote her book You Had Me At Hola about her time living and working in South America and the love story that swept her away when she met a free-spirited artisan during her travels.

biography is the story of someone’s life, written by someone other than the subject of the book. An autobiography, on the other hand, is written by the person themselves. Ghostwriters like myself can assist with any and all forms of non-fiction books – even autobiographies. This is because we work closely with the author and will be writing the story in the author’s words, using their turns of phrase and, of course, capturing their memories and experiences. The author can choose whether or not they disclose their use of a ghostwriter, because legally the content is theirs – it’s all part of how we fly under the radar!

So, now you know the difference between autobiography, memoir and biography, which style of book is best suited to your story? Inspired to start? Book in a time for us to connect and plan your future book! ca

There is so much more to Leigh’s life story – her next book will cover a journey to Japan – but by focusing on a single travelling experience and covering it in depth, Leigh has been able to capture the very essence of her personal development journey and lived experiences in each adventure. What about biography and autobiography? They are both books about someone’s life, but the primary difference here is a

Let’s keep our focus local. Supporting Sunshine Coast products and services really does make a difference. Next time you are looking to buy ANY product or service, remember SUPPORTING LOCAL MATTERS.

LOCAL BUSINESS ... is about more than just a good product or service! Erwin Brem from Mybusinessnow has been working with businesses for over 25 years in helping them grow, structure and manage their people better, so their businesses grow easier. But last year just may be the most challenging that most have ever gone through. Innovation is something that businesses need to do constantly, but the simple truth about business growth and, in particular, getting through this year and continuing to grow through 2021 is simply about doing things better than we have ever done before. But it's also about changing the way we spend and focusing attention on local businesses first. There are fundamental keys to business growth, especially in this current market, that can make a massive difference to any business. • Get skilled: Including the team. Basic sales and service skills are the

GROWTH... first stage to growth.

• Get seen: Businesses need to stand out; be one of the few, not the many. List your business on a local business platform like Sunshine Coast Business Now. • Get an unfair advantage: Have something the others don't, that attracts and keeps customers longer. Qoin does just that, because sometimes you need more than just being local to attract a customer. (see our full page article in this issue) If we don't buy local, it might just be bye, bye local soon. Mybusinessesnow want to help every business on the Sunshine Coast not only get back on track fast but also grow better than they were before. It's simple, easy and uncomplicated. To find out more, visit mybusinessnow.com.au or sunshinecoastbusinessnow.com.au or email erwin@mybusinessnow.com.au to find out how local businesses can get back on track and grow. ca

LONG TERM

BUSINESS STRATEGIES We have one client who tells us regularly that he has been with our business for over 30 years! We always find that amusing as HBA Encompass as it stands has been around for ten years. What he is saying is that he has been with an accounting firm that has morphed through various owners over the last 30 years, the latest (and longest standing) being HBA Encompass. It’s comforting to know that we have been able to satisfy the needs of this client for that long, even before we were involved! Longevity and continuity are something that is often overlooked when starting and running a business. Some people start businesses to ‘build and flip’, some to start an empire and some to create something long lasting to pass on to their offspring. There’s no criticism here; whatever you want to do is up to you. Often people start a business with their name as the business name – it's easy to remember and people can relate it to them and their good standing. That’s a great short-term option; as you have existing relationships that hopefully will help you to start your business. 34 ISSUE 98

What happens if you bring in a business partner or sell the business to someone else? Is your name on the door such a good thing, particularly when you are no longer involved? This is a decision you need to make yourself. It doesn’t matter if you started in your own name and now think it’s time to rebrand. Rebranding can be done at any time in your business life but it’s preferable to do so well before selling to ensure your clients or customers come to know and love the new brand name as well as the old one before you exit stage left. It’s something to think about as you start/grow/exit your business. HBA Encompass are Business Advisors who work exclusively with small business, helping them to define and achieve their business and lifestyle goals. HOW WILL YOU BECOME THE HAPPIEST, HEATHIEST, FITTEST VERSION OF YOURSELF? I am fascinated and inspired by human longevity. I have a vision for myself, and my clients, that we will be the happiest, healthiest, fittest 80-, 90-, 100-year-old versions of ourselves possible. Examples of those living long, happy, healthy lives exist all over the globe and the 'key secrets' are as diverse as the individuals themselves! They are not all ‘perfect health habits’ that you might imagine. In alignment with my philosophy on wellbeing, the key factors cover the realms of body, mind and soul. These centenarians note MOVEMENT, and keeping active, as an ESSENTIAL element. Simple daily stretching exercises, walking, household chores, gardening, dancing, bowls, etc. Any enjoyable activity that keeps them ‘using it’. ‘Using it’ also applies to the brain. Puzzles, crosswords, learning, reading – using their minds in a way that is stimulating, yet satisfying. NOT stressful. Stress is the antithesis of longevity. ALL of these centenarians smile, laugh, connect

with other humans and have a peace and acceptance with themselves and life that enables their soul to flourish. As with wellbeing all through the lifespan, it really is the simple things that make the biggest difference. If you are looking for some tips to help you live a longer, happier, healthier, fitter life, email me to arrange a complimentary twenty-minute LONGEVITY Chat. In that twenty minutes, I will ensure you leave with three actions you can begin implementing right now! Simply mention Matters Magazine to claim your LONGEVITY Chat. ca

DIGITAL CURRENCIES OFFER BUSINESSES AN INNOVATIVE ALTERNATIVE TO BANKS Digital currencies, including the Australiandeveloped digital asset Qoin, are taking off around the world. This growth is bringing transformational change to the finance sector, partially as a result of adaptations that must be made by traditional financial institutions in order to stay competitive in a digital market. It's alarming that in 2021, making an international payment can still be fraught with bureaucracy, transaction fees and waiting periods of up to two weeks. Based on blockchain technology, digital currency transactions are faster, easier and more secure than traditional cash transactions and funds can be transferred around the world in real-time, eliminating lengthy wait periods between sending and receiving funds. A transaction using Qoin only

takes a few seconds and has no fees. This is just one reason why businesses are becoming more aware of the concept of digital currency and global trends indicate that they will play a major part in conducting business in the future. We may not be living in a cashless society yet, but by the time we are, digital currencies will be fully integrated into the global economy. In the last 12 months, more than 23,000 Australian and New Zealand small businesses have joined Qoin.

Qoin enables them to do both while offering a payment method to their customers that is fast, secure and virtually contactless.” “With Qoin now launched in New Zealand and further global expansion planned this year, Qoin is confident that this success can be replicated in other countries,” said Mr Barker. ca

Qoin is a ‘Utility’ coin. Put simply, it is a digital asset that can be used every day to buy and sell goods and services. Qoin Australia Chief Marketing Officer Andrew Barker says, “Supporting small business is the cornerstone of Qoin. Australian small

Longevity is defined as ‘a long duration of individual life’ or ‘long continuance’ meaning permanence and durability. It can relate to people as well as businesses. In order for your business to attain longevity, you need to attain longevity – this means you need to be around for a long time! One of the biggest causes of failure in business is burnout of the business owner. This is generally caused by the owner trying to do too much – picking up the slack to either help other team members out, ensuring production happens and/or trying to save money by doing it themselves. If you want to create longevity in your business, you need to look after yourself first and foremost! You need to ensure that you

MAGIC MOMENTS

I AIN’T GONNA

live forever

This is the line of a song that I enjoy listening to and it rings true for all of us. We really are not going to live forever, so it definitely is important that we make the most of every moment. Realising our mortality is important as we get older as it reminds us to enjoy the moment that we are in. I used to spend time upset about things that happened in the past, or worried about things that may or may not happen in the future, but what’s the point, right? We may as well just enjoy the moment. Don’t worry, I know that is easier said than done, but I do feel that as we get older and begin to know more and more friends and family losing their battle with various diseases or even people that are taking their

own lives, it really does remind us the importance of focusing on the good stuff and trying as hard as possible to let go of all the rest. Because we are human, we often focus on the stuff we don’t want. We often think about what’s wrong, and we forget to focus our energy and attention on what’s right. But the truth is that this is what tends to make us feel better. So as we realise our longevity more and more, my words of wisdom for this issue are this: just keep pulling yourself up when you catch yourself focusing your attention on the bad stuff, the stuff you don’t want, and just begin slowly and gently to refocus your thoughts onto the good stuff, the stuff you do want. It takes time and it takes effort, but it works. c

BALANCE

is the key

WITH PAULA AND JOHN GOWLAND // SUNSHINE COAST ART AND FRAMING GALLERY When it comes to framing your photos and artwork, one size does not fit all.

may seem too ornate or elaborate for your personal taste. The key is to find the right balance and choose a style that works for you and for your artwork.

There are several decisions to be made, including style, colour, texture and proportion, that can make or break a design. Balancing all these elements is key. A successful design will keep the focus on your artwork. You don’t want to see the framing when you look at your overall piece; you want the frame to enhance your piece. One of your first choices in the design process is colour. Colours that are too bold or too bright can make your art look washed out. A better option for you may be to choose a variation of a colour in your print. This will help draw your eye to the artwork, not detract from it.

Your next step is to select a frame style. Current trends may seem like the easy choice, but they are not always right for your custom frame. On the other hand, period frames

Finally, it is important to keep proportion in mind. If you add a pattern to your frame design, make sure it is to scale and coordinates with your print or photo. Large patterns and textures can dwarf delicate or detailed images. The size of your finished piece is also important. A small frame placed on a large wall can get lost, while a large frame in a small space can feel overwhelming. Consider where you will be displaying your art and the frame’s proportion to the room. m www.artframes.com.au

LET’S GET BACK

to basics in 2021 WITH ROD RUSSELL // SAVVY BUSINESS SALES

The last 12 months have certainly presented business owners with challenges. Ironically, many business sectors are also enjoying strong yearon-year growth and record profits, making them extremely attractive to investors. For the industries that have suffered, now is the time for business owners to reassess their core values, operational systems and goals and get back to basics – the basics of what makes businesses succeed. This is the time to talk to your customers and staff, invite their feedback, promote discussion and ideas, and network to strengthen strategic alliances with other businesses and suppliers and to form new relationships. Do you offer exceptional customer service? Does the business present better than your competitors? Are you the preferred choice? The answer to all these questions should be yes!

In these unprecedented times, you can’t rely on traditional forms of business coming to your door or website. It’s the time to get out and create business. This will not only improve profitability but also the saleability of the business should circumstances change, which often happens without warning.

It is also wise for the fortunate industries who are booming to evaluate their business systems and procedures, quality control and customer service. In this volatile world, things can change very quickly. History proves most business owners make their big money when they sell their business. If you are not getting the basics right, chances are profits will suffer and so will the sale price of your business when it’s time to sell. ca www.savvybusiness.com.au

With over 25 years’ experience selling businesses on the Sunshine Coast and beyond, Rod Russell and his awardwinning team at Savvy Business are leaders in buying or selling businesses.

ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS... What’s important in your life? What would make this a great year for you? What do you need to achieve your business goals? What’s the biggest obstacle getting in your way? What do you need to say no to, to make this happen? What is your business exit plan?

If you don’t know the answers or your accountant doesn’t ask you these questions, then it might be time to change accountants?

LET US HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS.

ENSURING YOUR BUSINESS IS THERE

in the long run through innovation BY SHAREE WEBSTER, CA DIRECTOR // HOLMANS ACCOUNTING & TAXATION What a year 2020 was – one for the record books. As we launch into 2021 and think about the year ahead, an area to consider in your business is innovation. A review of innovation within your business will assist with making sure your business is providing for you in the long term. Innovation is integral to the development and growth of a business. Innovation doesn’t have to be fully transformative, it can be as simple as improving a small process or introducing new technology in the business. Reviewing the innovation agenda in the business helps the business stay updated, continually improving efficiency and productivity. If last year taught businesses anything, it was how to pivot to survive. Areas to review for innovation opportunities in your business: • PRODUCT OR SERVICE – enhancing or developing what products or services your business offers. •P ROCESS – improving processes via innovation. As mentioned in prior articles, your business should be utilising cloud technologies. •M ARKETING – how products and services are promoted; and • BUSINESS MODEL – review and implementing strategies to enhance relationships will all key stakeholders inside and outside the business. Regular innovation of your business enables you to adapt to change easily and stay on top of what is happening in your business and the industry you work within.

40 ISSUE 98

Businesses should consider setting the time aside to encourage innovative thinking as it is extremely beneficial to the longevity of your business. In addition, the key factors to ensure your business prospers are: • Those that plan each year performed better than those that didn’t. • Cash is king – those that had a surplus working capital did better than those with none. • Understanding financial statements – critical. This allows business owners to understand what is happening financially within their business and • People who sought advice from their trusted advisor, adapted more quickly.

In summary, your business will be well placed for a great 2021 and beyond, if your innovation agenda and business success factors are in place. m www.holmans.com.au Disclaimer: This article contains general information only. A SUNDAY DRIVE ENDING

with a five star treat! WITH ANTONIO PUELMA // SEE RESTAURANT

Now that international travel (and some national travel) can be a concern, it’s time to concentrate on supporting our locals, especially the hinterland and rural areas. What better time to jump in the car and go for a long drive along the Coast or to our beautiful hinterland? On one of our recent trips up the coast, we decided to take the long route to Rainbow Beach. Our course was straight up the Blackall Ranges, turning north towards Kenilworth. It was such a peaceful drive, with green meadows, gum trees and plenty of cattle (yum!). Not too far further up, we came up to a beautiful little town call Imbil. This is where we found the Yabba Creek Deli, WOW! From the second you go through the door you are hit

with the amazing aromas of fresh ground coffee and food scents that make tummies grumble. It also had the most amazing sweets display I have seen since Europe. But sweets weren’t what was exciting my taste buds; there was a full tray of freshly baked pies. But not just any pie – pulled brisket and mushroom pie. Now let me tell you, I have eaten some serious gourmet pies in my time. But this one deserved a medal, actually two medals as I

could not help myself and I ate two! Obviously too full for sweets, we were able to take some away for later. And they did not disappoint either! We fought over the lemon meringue pies like two kids over a football.

Do yourself a favour and take a drive as you might find your own little gem like we have. ca

TECODA

WHO’S GOT YOUR BACK(UPS)?

It’s the best insurance! WITH CHRISTIAN DAVIES // TECODA

Ever experienced a crypto-lock or ransomware attack on your emails or files? Know a business who has? Sadly, attempts are increasing (expected every 11 seconds in 2021 according to Cyber Security Ventures) and Sunshine Coast businesses have already been attacked with weapons grade hacking tools… What would you do? Typically, either internal IT or a third party will be fast on the hunt to identify the breach / port / infected terminal / digital intruder and sever the tie, blocking further activity. Now what do you do about encrypted files or emails? How does your business operate when held to ransom? After the clean-up and patch work you would rely on your backups, BUT are they available? Working? What productivity will be lost in restore? A day? A month? Or are there no backups? Some businesses without options WILL pay the ransom; typically payment is crypto-currency as it’s perceived as

untraceable payments (not 100% true) and according to TrendMicro fewer than 10% of organisations who pay actually receive their data. That’s what Cyber Insurance is there for, right? Well, yes… For Cyber Insurance claims to be accepted, your business will need to have met criteria such as security patches being maintained and software updates being the latest (for example) – it is rare for a business to be in that position and experience a breach. Office 365 is safe right? Not necessarily. The fine print suggests they will only give you up to 90 days of recovery and no guarantee of all your data. Solution? The 101 of how IT handles threats – up-todate backups and continuity solutions. You are your own insurance. Whether your business is six months or 60 years old, you’re a target. TAFE QUEENSLAND

JYI'S FUTURE TAKES SHAPE When Jyi Dalli lost his landscaping job last March as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, the 22-year-old found himself at a crossroads. Having already changed his career path once before, Jyi thought he had found his passion – so when he was confronted with the prospect of starting over yet again, he had no idea where he should begin. Now, almost a year later and on the path to a rewarding career in fitness, Jyi said the experience had a silver lining, enabling him to assess his goals and discover his true calling. “I’ve always loved the gym and exercising – I started at 17 and it’s always been a constant in my life – but I never thought about it as a career until after COVID-19 hit.” Like many teenagers, Jyi was unsure what he wanted to do when he left high school, taking a gap year during which he undertook labouring jobs to support himself. But when one of his close friends lost his life in a car accident, Jyi said he felt the need to do more with his life. “It was a real wake-up call. I realised life is too short and I wanted to start doing something I really loved doing,” Jyi said.

was lucky enough to qualify through another business, then moved on to a commercial building company, but it just wasn’t the same without Paul,” Jyi said. “I’d just started at a new business when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, so when the restrictions came in, I was laid off.” Having sustained back and shoulder injuries from his time as a landscaper, Jyi enrolled in the Certificate III in Fitness at TAFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba campus, with the aim of assisting his recovery while dipping his toe into the industry. He has since completed his certificate III and enjoyed the course so much that he enrolled in a Certificate IV in Fitness / Diploma of Sport dual qualification, which will enable him to become a personal trainer or high performance coach.

“It’s amazing to think how far I’ve come in such a short time. When I’d gone to my physio for my injuries, I had no idea why I was doing certain exercises and how they were supposed to help me – all I knew was to do them. Now, I’m learning why it’s all so important and I’m surprising myself with how much I know.”

But when tragedy struck and his boss Paul passed away unexpectedly, Jyi’s plans began to unravel.

Jyi is among a surge of Queenslanders who decided to pursue a career in the fitness industry in 2020, with the number of Certificate III in Fitness enrolments at TAFE Queensland's Mooloolaba campus

TAFE Queensland fitness teacher, Brett King attributed the increase to the versatility of the fitness industry and the ability for those in it to control their future by working for themselves. “Over the past few years we’ve seen a shift to a more health conscious culture, which I think COVID-19 has accelerated in many ways – people have either used this time to work on their health, or have gone in the opposite direction and are now seeking assistance to get back on the right track,” Brett said. “Even with the restrictions placed on the fitness industry during the pandemic, personal trainers have found innovative ways to continue training their clients successfully.

“I loved the course from the moment I sat down for orientation,” Jyi said.

After being told he’d make a great teacher, Jyi enrolled at university to study primary education. During this time, Jyi took on work as a labourer with a small family-run landscaping business to support himself while he studied – a role he enjoyed so much, he quit university and began an apprenticeship.

“Because it was such a small business everything was left up in the air. I

nearly doubling year on year from 2019 to 2020.

“The increase in the use of digital platforms to run exercise sessions, especially during COVID-19 restrictions, has not only made exercise more accessible for busy or vulnerable individuals, but has also highlighted other opportunities fitness instructors can tap into to make their career more sustainable.”

DOES YOUR LOGO

need a makeover?

Your logo is an essential part of your brand, you want to make sure it’s done well to ensure you stand out in a sometimes crowded marketplace. A great, professional logo design not only has the power to communicate what you stand for, it will also make a good first impression and help you stand out from the competition. Once you have an idea of what your logo might be, it’s important to engage a professional designer to translate those ideas into a successful business brand. Many different elements come into play here, from colours, shapes and graphics to typography. Isolating each component and what it can do for your logo helps in understanding how the different elements work together. When thinking about your logo, the first thing you want to do is select the right design aesthetic for your brand. There is no one style that is right for everyone, only what’s best for your brand and working with a professional designer will ensure the right solution is created.

Here are some design styles to start the process:

combination with other styles, like vintage,

CLASSIC AND TIMELESS

FUN AND QUIRKY

Trendy logos can be fun and exciting, but they can quickly become out-of-date. A classic style gives better staying power and can help your business reach a broader audience.

A clean and minimalist style is often chosen to communicate how fresh and modern the business is. The use of whitespace, minimal details and simple lines results in sleek, pared back logos, and is synonymous with this design style. VINTAGE OR RETRO There is a reason why vintage and retro designs have been on trend for quite some time. They instantly remind you of the past and evoke warm feelings of nostalgia. HANDMADE AND HANDCRAFTED Handcrafted style sends a clear message: this brand is individualistic and stands for handmade quality. The style works well in

with a young (or young at heart) target customer. Fun and quirky styles tend to be colourful and cute and often use symbols or illustrations, to create a positive and illustration, this style is ideal in bringing out a brand’s fun character. Often course, these styles are not mutually exclusive, and it is possible to combine some styles to suit your brand. It just takes some brainstorming and creativity!

Does towing reduce the life of

The four wheel drive transmission sp 60 ISSUE 98

f an automatic transmission?

pecialist!

When purchasing a 4WD you may be under the assumption that you have purchased a ready to go, throw anything at it vehicle. This is not the case, particularly in relation to your automatic transmission and towing.

A healthy operating transmission temperature is ideally between 65 – 85 degrees, in fact the lower the operating temperature, the better! Most late model automatic vehicles are equipped with a multiplate heat exchanger cooler system which utilises the engine coolant in one section and the hot transmission fluid in the other. Keeping the transmission fluid warmer can benefit in very cold climates as it helps to control viscous drag on the internal planetary gearsets. Engine coolant will reach the operating temperature faster than the transmission fluid would have otherwise and this can be important when chasing incremates of fuel efficiency on paper. In relation to cooling the transmission fluid, particularly in our Australian climate this is inadequate. The engines cooling system operating temperature is between 95 – 105 degrees, therefore your vehicles heat exchanger cooling potential is no lower than 105 degrees.

The most important and often overlooked stress for the transmission is TOWING. Many upgrades / modifications to your 4WD including, bulbar / winch / spotlight installs, increased tyre diameters, canopy fit outs, long range fuel tanks, engine power enhancements all increase load on the automatic transmission therefore increasing heat generated. Transmission cooling upgrades are a necessity to your 4WD. The removal and bypassing of the factory heat exchanger, the fitment of an air to oil cooler behind the vehicle grille and replacement of the thermal cooler control valve is the key. This achieves a healthy operating transmission temperature to sit at around 80 degrees. The general rule is - for every 20 degrees cooler, the life expectancy of your vehicle’s transmission is doubled. Our customers that TOW share with us that they are seeing the transmission temperature drop to between 15 to 20 degrees after these upgrades.

CARE FOR YOUR

longevity

Often, like high-performance cars, our bodies fail to function perfectly when they are not properly and regularly tuned. Although programmed to perform extraordinary feats of acceleration, speed, comfort, breaking and turning, yet without the use of quality fuels, regular oil changes, tyre rotations and frequent maintenance, our vehicles can become sluggish and break down. Our bodies are not that much different. Although designed to win and programmed to deal with a certain amount of rough handling and reckless driving, our systems often age quicker and wear out long before their due date. In spite of the fact that we are coded with the power to heal, we are still subject to the basic laws of life. Healing is rapid when our bodies are properly fed, hydrated, rested and exercised in a clean, moderately sunny environment. Degeneration can also be rapid, when our systems are fuelled with poor quality food or even subjected to improper dental care. We will age faster when exhausted through overwork or stressed by the burdens of life, and even more so through lack of regular exercise and quality sleep.

Homeostasis is the term used to describe the body’s innate power to compensate to sustain stable function of the most critical body systems, at the expense of the least vital if necessary. Our bodies are always ready to compensate when we abuse them. However, compensation comes at a cost. Continual neglect of proper care for our bodies may result in a slow but steady decline in health and a failure to achieve longevity. It may just start with aches, pains, headaches, inflammation, neurological disorders or hormonal imbalance, but in most cases, there will be former interference. A fuel tanker once accidently topped up the unleaded reservoir at a petrol station with diesel. Unaware of this mistake, I filled my car with the corrupted mix before heading off on a long trip from Sydney and up the New England highway. The engine would not perform as it had done previously. It was okay on the straights, but barely made it up the hills. Fortunately, I run out of petrol just south of Scone. Once refuelled, the car recovered optimal performance. I was puzzled until I returned to the station in Sydney where I was informed about the mixed fuels. As a team of naturopaths, we meet many people who are puzzled as to why they do not enjoy optimal performance in life. Often it is simply a matter of the fuel. Once the diet is tweaked, performance improves.

With others, the decline is due to longterm toxic exposure. In such cases, nature needs to be assisted in her efforts to expel impurities and re-establish right conditions in the system. This may even involve dental revision to safely deal with mercury amalgam dental fillings or dead teeth. In other cases, a decline in function may be due to spinal malalignment, poor posture or past injuries, requiring physical therapy. The adoption of simple lifestyle habits such as daily exercise, quality pre-midnight sleep, proper breathing and drinking water, while avoiding processed foods and stimulants, can produce a huge improvement in performance. Many today are unintentionally violating the basic laws of life and suffering as a result. Medical centres are packed and people everywhere are wanting to feel and look better than they do. Health professionals are under pressure to provide a quick fix and few are willing to prescribe lifestyle changes rather than medicines. Living Valley is a registered Public Benevolent Institution on the Sunshine Coast, staffed by a team of professionals who really care about your longevity. Based on lifestyle education, therapy and nurture, our program produces exceptional results. Health is everything really, so why not make yours a priority? a

LIVE, LOVE,

laugh

We see this saying all over the place: LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH. What does it mean to you? To me it means we have one opportunity in this life to truly live our life to the fullest. So often we waste so much time on stupid stuff that honestly doesn’t matter. We have all done it, got so uptight about something someone did or said, or didn’t say or didn’t do. Ultimately, sometimes to the degree that we no longer talk to a certain family member or friend that we used to love so dearly. And when we stop and think, we sometimes have to really rack our brains to remember what the dickens it was even all about. Well, to me LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH is about stopping the crap. It’s about realising that our LONGEVITY, our mortality, means that in this life we want to live more, we want to love more and we want to laugh more. It means that the bulls**t we make up in our heads about what other people should or shouldn’t do or should or shouldn’t think too often stops that. What if we decided right here and right now to be more understanding, more compassionate, more loving? What if we decided to give others more of a break? What if we decided that we actually don’t know it all? That we actually might be wrong about that thing that we’ve been holding onto so passionately about being right about. And if we are right, does it really matter in the long run? NOPE, NOT REALLY. Just think about it, because you and I, we ain’t gonna live forever! Is there someone that you love that you are currently not being that loving to? 64 ISSUE 98

Is there someone that you once loved that is no longer in your life through some silly falling out? What if you decided that now is the time to free yourself of any of this and really stepped into LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH? Here’s how in three simple (but hard) steps. 1. Make a decision to put the past in the past and simply learn from it. What is one learning you could take from the incident or experience? ake a decision to repair or resolve by reaching out and saying, 2. M "Hey, I miss you and I am so sorry for my part in our falling out. Could we put the past behind us? We don't need to over it all again. Can we just move forward because I would love to have you back in my life?" ake a decision to let go of having to be right. Make a decision to 3. M remind yourself that you can be right or you can be happy. Make a decision to choose happy. You deserve it.

You and I are not getting any younger, and our time on this earth is running out. Each and every day we are closer to the end of it. Don’t waste another second, don’t waste another day. Yes you! Live, love, Laugh. f www.vickiemagic.com.au

longevity In this issue of the magazine, we called out on Facebook to ask people what businesses they knew that had been around on the Sunshine Coast for a long time. We approached those businesses and asked them to tell us a little about themselves and their longevity.

SUNCITY BOWL – 44 YEARS ON Suncity Bowl started as an idea in late 1977 in Canberra when owner John Griffin came to the end of his degree in Business Administration. Little did he know that he would still be going 44 years later. In its heyday, during the early years, they boasted massive league numbers of approximately 2,000 playing in weekly competition. Of course, a lot has changed over time with the number of social players now equal to the registered league players. John has a real love of people and enjoys serving his customers. To a large extent he attributes the longevity of the centre to having a wonderful workforce and in particular manager David Fitzsimmons, who came from Canberra many years ago as a very young man. John also wants to pay tribute to his wonderful wife Sue, who worked initially in the business and has stood by him and supported him throughout their whole married life. f

NEW STAFF HOME CARE SOLUTIONS New Staff Home Care Solutions has been providing great staff since 2004. Just five years later, they were inducted into the Sunshine Coast’s Excellence in Business Awards Hall of Fame. A recruitment consultancy in a regional community, they rode the storms of the GFC and rising unemployment and adapted to the changing nature of work. New Staff has evolved to become part of the home care solution since 2018, providing home care and carer support to the aged and people living with a disability, with the rebranded New Staff Home Care Support. New Staff’s dedicated team of carers demonstrate and witness resilience within clients every day, as they support people to keep their loved ones at home. Initially, Hector grew a variety of small crops but he moved to all pineapples as processing facilities became available in South East Queensland and Australians ate mostly canned fruit in the early days. These days Aussies love fresh fruit and want more all the time, so all the fruit grown in Australia stays here. The growers all work together to get the fruit out to market, and Ian is part of the Tropical Pineapples cooperative who pack and ship the fruit around the country and into retail stores. Ian’s son James has recently joined the farm to become the third generation on what is now one of the bigger producing pineapple farms in Australia. f www.vickiemagic.com.au/PineappleFarmerIanFullerton

THE GINGER FACTORY The Ginger Factory is one of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular attractions, delighting families for more than 40 years. Home of Buderim Ginger, the World’s Finest Ginger, visitors can explore the beautiful nine-hectare property and factory on tours and rides. During the peak of COVID-19 in 2020, The Ginger Factory was forced to close down for a couple of months. Since re-opening, the attraction has seen record numbers of visitation with activities such as The Gruffalo Trail, a gigantic plant sale at the Ginger, Flower and Plant Emporium, cooking events with Kim McCosker from 4 Ingredients, Summer BBQ weekend events, Meet the Maker tastings and demonstrations, as well as everyone’s favourite Santa in his workshop during December. With ongoing support from locals, the attraction has been able to prosper and continue to welcome more visitors to Play, Taste and Discover all of what’s on offer. f www.gingerfactory.com.au www.mattersmagazine.com.au 69

IAN BLACK – DAY AND GRIMES REAL ESTATE Ian began his real estate career at the age of 30 in May 1978 in Canberra with Roy Bertram Real Estate. By 1986, he had risen to branch manager and then partner in the business. He moved to the Sunshine Coast in 1986 and purchased a Stationery and Office Furniture business and built this up over three years before buying a parcel of rural land near Noosa with an eye to develop. This turned into a very successful five-year project. In 1993, Ian returned to real estate. He began working at Henzells Day and Grimes Real Estate in Nambour, a combination of the oldest names in real estate on the Sunshine Coast. Eighteen months later, an opportunity came up to buy the office from the Henzell family and Ian took over the business on May 1, 1996. The following year, the original name of Day and Grimes was restored and Ian is still principal of the business 25 years later. f www.dayandgrimes.com
