LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I do not believe that in a single letter, I could describe to you the love I have for this show. I have been silently waiting to direct it the second I read it. I wept at the connection I felt to all three of these characters and the story that unfolds.

Growing up, I did not have a strong community to support me. My parents were always working and weren’t around too often. All the communities I did join were more academic than social. On top of that, I was juggling trying to learn English as a second language. I was searching for a community, but not just any community, one that would see me for who I wanted to be. That is a rare find. No one taught me how to find those communities. No media showed me that everything would get better. No teacher told me where to find people who understood me. That is something I had to find myself.

Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them has many themes about immigrant life in America and the struggles of finding a strong community. For me, it exemplifies a sense of community--how we find it even in the worst of times, and then rebuild it if it is forced to collapse. These children have found a place to belong. When it is taken away from them, they may be knocked down, but ultimately, they find strength within themselves and each other to defend this community.

If there is one message to take away from this performance, it is that we must protect our communities, whether this be our own or other marginalized communities. People in power are actively trying to break up queer, ethnic, and social communities to make us feel helpless. They will use tactics to make it seem that there is no way other than their way. But there is nothing more dangerous to those in power than communities willing to fight in the face of adversity to defend each other, their history, and their stories.

If these children can do that, then I am confident that we can also do it now. Find your communities, protect them, and remember to fly as high as the sky.

BEHIND THE SONG

“A

Little Man Stands in the Forest”

A little man stands in the forest

Very quiet and dumb, He has a pure purple coat around.

Say, who may be the little man, That’s there in the forest alone

With the purple coats?

The little man stands in the forest

On one leg

And has on his head

A small Black Käpplein.

Say, who may be the little man, That’s there in the forest alone

With the little black käppelein?

The little man there on one leg, With his red coats

And his black kuppelein, Can only be the rosehip!

The song is an aria from the opera Hansel und Gretel. Gretel sings the aria while she and her brother Hansel are picking strawberries in the forest, and even though they never see the man she is singing about, he serves as a comforting presence for the children.
