LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Good evening,

It’s been roughly 5,781,600 minutes (give or take some leap years and atomic seconds) since RENT last stormed onto the stage at DramaTech, and it’s been a privilege to return to DT and direct this groundbreaking show. In 2023, as we face stigmatization of disease, attacks on members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and a devastating rental housing crisis, RENT feels apropos to speak to the moment. The words, the references, the cellphones may not be the same - but the message is eternal.

There’s a good reason this show is a favorite of so many theatre-goers around the world. RENT reminds us of the devastating impact HIV/AIDS has had - and continues to have - on communities and families, but also reminds us that there’s always hope and every day we have with one another is worth celebrating. Through adversity, we come together - and for me, that’s such a crucial part of what this show is all about: building a community out of the chaos.

Thank you to this incredible cast and crew, and to everyone who has touched this show in some way. And thank you to each of you for coming out to see us perform RENT as we celebrate DramaTech’s 75th Season. Our theatre has come a long way since the first set of one acts performed at the YMCA Auditorium in 1947, when admission was 30¢ - and the phenomenal students who have produced this show only prove that DT will continue to thrive.

Best wishes,

“The opposite of war isn’t peace - it’s creation.”

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Dear DramaTech patrons,

Thank you so much for joining us for this production of Rent. As the culminating event during our 75th anniversary season, we are so proud to mark this anniversary year with such a beloved show. We last presented Rent 10 years ago. I had the pleasure of directing that production and was proud of the work that we accomplished. I’m even more excited to welcome back several of our alums to helm this current production. Many thanks to Graham, Megan, and Jayme for guiding this awesome cast through the process of creating this beautiful production.

Seventy-five years is quite the milestone. DramaTech’s presence on Georgia Tech’s campus shows a desire for arts and creativity to thrive here. While we might be a technical school, the balance of arts with technology creates a fully-rounded human. Each student who walks into the doors of DramaTech is special. They are interested in working collectively with other like-minded students who want to investigate and share in the human experience. DT students are given every opportunity to become leaders – be it the President of the organization or a committee chair. They leave DramaTech well-rounded individuals who will be excellent engineers and even better humans.

The building that you walk into is more than just a theatre for these

students as well - it is a home away from home. Here, they are encouraged to connect with other students and create deep, life-long relationships. In fact, we’ve had several DT marriages and babies!

I am so proud to have been the faculty advisor for this organization for the past 14 years. It is exciting to watch each student flourish over their time here and as they move into their careers. I am proud to be a small part of the amazing history of this flagship student arts organization at Tech. I look forward to many more years working with DramaTech and watching as the arts continue to expand across campus in coming years.

Thank you for your past, present, and future support of DramaTech. And here’s to 75 more! We hope to see you here again soon!

Best,

(Roger Davis)

Other film scores include work for Rolling Stones magazine publisher Jann Wenner. He conceived, directed and wrote four original songs for “Away We Go!”, a musical video for children. RENT, his rock opera based on “La Boheme”, had its world premiere on February 13, 1996 at New York Theatre Workshop. Mr. Larson died unexpectedly of an aortic aneurysm on January 25, 1996, ten days before his 36th birthday. His music (including songs cut from his shows) is archived in the Library of Congress.

Keith Haring

Untitled (~1988)

Keith Haring was an artist and social activist living in New York during the AIDS epidemic. He wanted his art to “be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagine and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.” He created thousands of pieces of art before he died due AIDS-related complications in 1990, many of which became symbols of social activist movements in the 80s and 90s.

Silence=Death (1987)

The Silence=Death project was founded in 1987 by Avram Finkelstein along with Jorge Socarras, Chris Lione, Charles Kreloff, Oliver Johnston, and Brian Hoard. Their goal was to call the public to action in the fight against AIDS. The pink triangle was chosen from its association with the persecution of homosexuals in Nazi Germany - a strong symbol reminding people to not stand idly by. The poster was designed to be wheatpasted (a quick method of gluing posters) around the city and was soon adopted by ACT UP.

ACT UP (formed 1987)

ACT UP, or the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, was created at the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center in NYC when a guest speaker, Larry Kramer, asked his audience if they wanted to create “a new organization devoted to political action”. Days later, 300 people met together to form ACT UP. They held marches and rallies, spread awareness campaigns and posters, and engaged in civil disobedience to demand action. Soon after forming, chapters were founded in cities across the US and even in countries overseas. ACT UP is still active today, fighting for healthcare, research, and preventive measures for HIV/AIDS, as well as fighting discrimination and stigmatization against those with the virus.

Felix Gonzalez-Torres

“Untitled” (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) 1991

“Untitled” is an art installation representing Gonzalez-Torres’s partner, Ross Laycock, who died in 1991 of an AIDS-related illness. The installation is 175 pounds of candy, representing Ross’s body weight before he fell ill. Visitors to the installation are encouraged to take a piece of candy, and the depletion represents Ross’s weight loss and deterioration before he passed away. Gonzalez-Torres requested that the pile be replenished continuously, so that even with loss, there would be potential for endless revitalization. While this artwork is not directly replicated in our mural, the candy illustrations are included as an homage to this Ross and GonzalezTorres.
