We are an independent Uk based ideas studio. We design seamlessly across a wide range of interdisciplinary media including branding and identity, digital design, editorial design, environmental design publishing and public art. We collaborate closely with clients and industry professionals to create solutions which are concidered, engaging and effective. Something which we can all be happy about. We’re known for pushing boundaries. But out work always serves our clients purpose.

Among beautiful branding I admire BERG because they are a studio who also encourages self driven work apart from only client based jobs. My favorite thing about this studio is there “Collection 100 which is a series of screen prints they have produced to sell and exhibit.

There is no theme just people making what they want to make.

Anonymous

Anonymous is a multidisciplinary studio based in the Republic of Singapore. The thing that I appreciate most about Anonymous is the acute attention to detail. They apply beautiful type and layout skills to a attractive range of stocks and make the most out of print processes.

Anagrama

Anagrama is a beautiful studio based in Mexico. Although not based in the most design lead country in the world they produce stunning work which is on just about every design blog ever. They work tremendously well with colour, stock choices and print process/finishes. Definitely one of the most influential studios to my practice.

I was shown this online portfolio of John Barton by Socket Studio. As a student portfolio it shows a really professional range of work, knowledge of printing, stocks and type. From my work in 2nd year I used this blog as a benchmark to strive for. I wanted my work to be at this standard or higher when I leave university .

Bureau Mirko Borsche 16

“Bureau Mirko Borsche is a graphic design studio founded in 2007 by Mirko Borsche. Renowned for its versatility, the studio’s signature design is a content-driven approach based on the idea of design as a source for learning, understanding and joy. Although this studio is more about book work and type I still find there work stunning and inspirational.

Received NUGGETS OF WISDOM

“Studios want to see your ability to solve problems based on the real world - they want to see how you respond to a brief. If they think you can make the studio more productive then you are likely to get a job.” Daniel Freytag BERG

“A lot of the work I do professionally I don’t particularly like so I try and balance that with badly paid (not paid in most cases) work that I enjoy and lets me develop my own aesthetic.” Paul Macgregor Socket Studios

18

“The one sole piece of advice i could give would be to do something that you enjoy. Dont do it solely for money. If you do something you enjoy, it isnt like work that way you dont get bored or frustrated with it.” Andy Vapour

“we’re in the bullshit game and that’s what clients pay us for.” “Probably a load of shit, but there might be a few nuggets of wisdom in there.” Johnny Watters Rapier

Embossing Varnish & Foiling Laser Cutting Colour & Stock

Embossing Embossing is a raised or sunken in design that is achieved by applying pressure onto paper from usually a copper plate. This process produces stunning results. Although having a minimal effect on objects it creates a very professional and attractive element to the overall design. Its application is mainly used for business cards and books but can be applied to a huge range of products and printed material.

Varnish & Foiling Varnishes and Foiling is the finish that adds the most value to a design. Adds elegance and class to all that it touches. A varnish is a transparent finish that adds a gloss to the areas that it is applied to. Foiling on the other hand adds more of a metallic finish. Both great ways of adding a sophistication to and identity or object.

laser cutting Laser-cutting is the precision cutting, engraving or rastering of materials such as paper, acrylic and wood. Due to the HUGE price tag that a laser-cutting machine comes with you see more die-cutting compared to laser in industry. But who can’t love that machine. I am someone who loves to laser cut. I think it is a perfect yet simple way of creating irregular shapes and cuts and adding a new dimension to what ever you create.

Colour & Stock Picking the right colour is essential to any design project. A colour is probably the first thing you see or associate with the design. All colours have a certain predetermined projection to its audience. Colours are really hard to master but you can definitely tell those apart that are talented with colour compared to those who pretend to know what they are doing. Stock plays a huge roll in design. Making sure you have the right stock for the job is an important skill. Whether you need durability, texture, a finish, tactile, double sided, printable, visual there are so many things to consider. So knowing the stock game is essential.

Them last two were a joke. It’s to show that colour has initial impacting ideas in your head so when faced with subject of the design you already have an idea of what you are looking at. But when faced with contrasting subject it throws you totally off. Although finishes and colours are an enjoyable and rewarding part of design you still need to make sure the client you are doing it for is right for the processes you are wanting to apply. Have fun with it. But know your shit.
