Module Title
END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION NAME Matthew Chatfield 1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? The main skill I have acquired is working closely with others whether that be another graphic designer, other cross course collaborations, also professional clients and Printers. It has helped my communication skills and above all professionalism and when talking and contacting people. I work really well in collaborations and I think working with and for people gives me a incentive and motivation to prove myself compared to when I work for myself. My software skills have improved. I find myself using InDesign more and more compared to illustrator I think this a good thing as the work created is much more professional and laid out nicer. This has improved the aesthetic of my design. Time management has developed as for the first time since starting I have got all my work done and managed to have a proper social life as well as doing my work. Usually I am boring and let graphic design take over but I have balanced them out much better this term. This has helped my mood and my attitude towards university. My work standard has really improved greatly I am producing much more considered and better designed work more than ever. I have Also improved my screen-printing skills I think I am now a very competent screen-printer and I rarely make any mistakes any more.
2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? I am taking a much more informed approach to design this term. I make sure I am doing my research and thus making better design decisions about whatever I am making. This has helped me to produce a much more professional standard of work for real clients and to create a great looking portfolio. My development process of managing time and organisation has improved although still needs work I am in a much better state than last year.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? I am working much more professionally and I think my work is at a good standard and improved MASSIVLY over the term. I am taking more pride in my work and my motivation have improved.
Screen-printing is definitely one of my strengths and I wish I utilised it more this term as you can create some really lovely pieces. Talking about my work and communicating with others. I am very confortable telling people ideas, critical feedback and instructions. I feel my confidence is getting better with each term.
4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future? My weakness is any form of written word. Anything that involves writing is a severe weakness. Boards, blog, crits, forms and context are all the last thing I want to do. I find myself just not been able to write properly and I can never properly reiterate what I actually want to say in a professional manor. I am much better at talking but I feel my struggling with writing hinders my grade and lets me down the most. For example I love looking at design and I know why I like it or what is or isn始t good about the work I始m looking at but I just can始t write about it in a sophisticated way.
5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
I will prepare more for crits. I think in some crit I will be able to talk thought my work but is often not the case. I will look into screen-based design more. I know the ever-growing web based design and I should make myself produce this more. Write up context work as I始m browsing. I tend to browse a great deal of work but never stop and blog about work I like I hope to change this for next time. Ask for feedback more from peers. This will help me see that my design is going in the right direction. Get help with written work
