2 crotales*† 2 tubular bells*† 6 tuned mixing bowls and pot lids**† med. or lg. tam-tam assorted beaters *crotales should be hung by cords, so that they can be lifted and struck together against each other and against the tops of the tubular bells. **any tuned metal (including standard instruments) could be used in lieu of pot lids and bowls; selection of substitutes is left to the performer's discretion.

Vibraphone, with lowest A flats transposed up an octave, is one possibility; almglocken are another.

claps each player is required to clap in the "Kyrie;" strive for balanced, unlabored clapping fermatas a square fermata means a note or rest held to twice the value or greater (a normal fermata is approx. one and a half times the value) laissez vibrér sempre

I. Kyrie

Mass, for soprano and percussionist, combines fragments of the mass ordinary with fragments of poetry by Forugh Farrokhzad, Rainer Maria Rilke, Rumi, and Sonia Sanchez.

Kyrie eleison Christe eleison [Mass Ordinary] God, if I need to fly one day from behind these silent bars, how will I answer this child's wet eyes?

Let me be, I am a captive bird!

Percussionist Jon Hess suggested a small, portable percussion setup. We chose a palette of metal percussion featuring tuned bowls and pot lids. These found metal instruments form the center of the sound, giving this work a resonant and beautiful sound world that suggests timelessness and ritual.

The choice and shape of texts used was a result of a fruitful collaboration between the composer and singer Sonja Tengblad. Sonja imagined a unique work that would fuse poetry and liturgy into an intimate and personal religious statement that could be performed in both concert and worship settings. This is that work, our Mass.
