And Team Geriatric was born...
Let’s just say that it was an ‘older’ group of friends who chose to take on the challenge of Rallycross, with Tony’s wife Susan joking that they looked like a group of Geriatrics.

What is RallycrosS? take the best bits of circuit racing and combine them with the best bits of rallying and you have rallycross; one of the most popular - and action-packed - forms of motorsport that can be found anywhere on the globe
r
allycross is a unique form of motorsport that offers guaranteed action from short, sharp sprint races on special mixed-surface circuits Racing around the UK, the BTRDA National Rallycross Championship features a variety of different classes to cater for a wide selection of cars and budgets with each event following a similar format - where drivers contest a number of qualifying heats to determine their grid slot for the all-important final. It’s then a simple first to the flag wins. With races lasting a matter of minutes, each event over the course of the season can feature as many as 60 wheel-to-wheel battles as drivers fight for on-track success. Taking into account the amount of action, and the levels of excitement, there are few - if any - forms of motorsport to match it.

BACK TO BRITISH From Suzuki to mini... Having enjoyed years of success running a Suzuki Swift, Team Geriatric made the decision to switch to a MINI for the 2013 campaign. Tony went on to be being crowned victor in the BMW MINI Rallycross Championship in his first year with the car. A move to the BTRDA Rallycross Championship in 2014 then saw the team lift the over 2101cc crown in the Super Modified Class.
Having taken the MINI back to the British Championship in 2015, the decision was taken to upgrade for 2016 with the purchase of a Ford KA. It would be an inspired choice, as Tony romped to the Super National Class title - going close to defending it twelve months later despite early season technical gremlins hitting his challenge.
BTRDA SUccess For 2018, the team returned to the BTRDA National Rallycross Championship with eyes fiirmly fixed on the main prize. Securing the Super Modified Class in fine style, Tony was runner-up in the overall standings after an impressive campaign that featured six wins in nine starts.
The SERIES: RETRO RALLYCROSS
T
he Retro Rallycross Championship was launched in 2011 to provide those with a desire to race classic rallycross cars with somewhere to compete.
The multi-class series caters for both two and four-wheel drive machines, with Team Geriatric set to do battle in the up-to-1600cc with a Toyota MR2.
Open to cars that ran up to 31 December 1991, the series has quickly established itself as the premier historic rallycross series in the UK.
The mid-engined, rear-wheel drive car - an icon of the 1980s - has been acquired by the team over the winter and will undergo extensive work during the year ahead as Team Geriatric makes its maiden foray into the historic arena.
Running alongside the British Rallycross Championship, Retro Rallycross showcases a varied range of historical machines from across the ages, which includes everything from Group B monsters top historics from the early years of the sport.
With a seven round schedule to look ahead to in 2019, the team is now ready and raring to go as it seeks to add to its impressive record at the highest levels of the sport.

A
lthough rallycross is one
of the more cost effective methods of motorsport, there are still a wide selection of costs that need to be covered each and every season.
Whilst personal budget and the support of existing long-term backers goes some way towards keeping the team on track, there are a range of different costs that need to be met over the course of the year - ranging from mechanical maintenance and running costs of the car through to transportation to race meetings, onevent accommodation for the team and body work repairs - which are
to be expected thanks to the rough and tumble nature of the sport. A range of different sponsorship options exist in order to help the team maintain the high standards for which it is so well known. Of course, a key part of any sponsorship deal is value for money, and we pride ourselves on working hard to maximise the investment from all of our backers. As a sponsor of Team Geriatric, these are just some of the benefits you can enjoy: • Branding on the Team Geriatric Toyota MR2, team support vehicles,

ne of the major attractions for sponsors who are keen to get involved with Team Geriatric is the ease with which you can keep up to date with the on track action in the Retro Rallycross series. Highlights of every round of the season are hosted by BARC TV, the new online broadcast platform that was introduced by the British Automobile Racing Club back in 2007. BARC TV showcases the very best action from a wide range of championships across the UK, including the British Rallycross Championship.
Part of the BRC offering sees each round of the Retro Rallycross given a highlights packed on the BARC TV platform - meaning free access to all to keep up to speed with the on-track action. With the team working with a specialist media professional to aid with PR activities, Team Geriatric benefits from regular coverage in a range of online and print publications, which include specialist motorsport publications such as Autosport and Motorsport News. Tony has also appeared in various podcasts produced on behalf of the BARC by CRE8MEDIA and recorded on event, taking listeners to the heart of the action as he discusses his results on track. Footage from each and every event is also made available to fans in the days after a race weekend - giving fresh insight into the sport. For the 2019 season, the team is also in discussions with Toyota about the possibility of a series of features as part of its ongoing ‘Toyota People’ series on the official blog of Toyota UK - with an aim to showcase the activities of the team over the course of the year to a fresh audience.

Raising the level online... Team Geriatric has continued to embrace social media throughout 2018, with an increased following on Facebook being given an insight into the inner workings of the team. Regular video footage shot from onboard the Team Geriatric car and hosted on YouTube has also proven to be popular with fans. A new mobile friendly website has also given the team a stronger platform on which to keep fans and sponsors alike up to date with progress both on and off-track.
R
a prime time audience... Alongside race coverage, Team Geriatric has been involved in a range of other activities that has boosted it’s presence, such as the time that BBC Breakfast presenter Mike Bushell was able to sample the team’s MINI at the Three Sisters circuit near Wigan - a feature which can be viewed HERE
ecent seasons have seen Team Geriatric appear at a range of events to help promote its sponsors - showing the value that comes from being involved with one of the top teams in British Rallycross.
The team has been a regular visitor to the annual Autosport International Show, held the NEC in Birmingham, with its car being used by Lucas Oil to promote its products in front of a bumper audience of more than 80,000. The team has also appeared at the Anglesey Show in North Wales - again to support Lucas Oil - a number of times, giving the attending audience a first hand opportunity to see what Rallycross is all about whilst also showcasing sponsors to a new audience. Whilst there is little doubt that the cars are the stars as far as many race fans are concerned, Tony himself is also an accomplished speaker who can be called upon to make personal appearances on
behalf of sponsors. A prime example came during the 2016 season, when Tony was invited to speak at one of the Clitheroe and District Motor Club’s regular members meetings at the request of the Club Chairman. The evening proved to be a resounding success as Tony regailed tales of his career on track - and also used the event to pass on tips for other aspiring racers looking to follow in his footsteps. A short extract from the evening can be viewed HERE.
