MWA Health Matthew Williams Architect Overview Matthew worked as Health Sector Leader at Woods Bagot Sydney Studio, for a period of 2.5 years before moving to the Woods Bagot Defence team. During this time, Matthew’s key responsibilities were the delivery of several Sub Acute Rehab and Mental Health Facilities in the greater Sydney Metropolitan Region, for key public sector client Health Infrastructure. This involved developing a critical understanding of HI and User Group expectations, and delivery of complex, tightly coordinated and cost-efficient design solutions. A critical component of this role was in the integration of clinical architecture inputs, user group reviews and budget and coordination gateways, in line with wider project milestone and budget targets whilst also maintaining a reasonable profit for the Firm. Matthews broad range of skills across the whole of the project process, and his detailed knowledge of technical and statutory requirements, building services and assembly, allows him to engage confidently and expertly with clients, user groups and consultants within the Health Architecture sector.. Matthew’s flexible and robust approach to communications with the Client and User Groups supports improvement of the design as the architecture process advances. Matthew retains sharp focus on clinical requirements as paramount to the quality of the design outcome. Matthew’s strong graphical skills in hand sketching 3d concepts, and strong visual and verbal presentation techniques, allows design opportunities to be quickly explored and validated by Clients and Users. Matthew’s strong reporting skills allows for project decisions to be appropriately articulated and recorded.
Matthew has a deep interest in Health and the Clinical proess, having once considered Medicine as a career path, and now maintaining a strong interest in health and wellness. Matthew has a strong interest in Salutogenics, and the patient experience of the journey to healing and wellness. Matthew maintains active relationships with local health design experts and professional forums and engagements As such, Matthew also maintains a strong and active commitment to understanding modern trends in health care service delivery, as are relevant to building design and the the clinical process. The health sector is at this time, as a consequence of strong improvements in IT integration with hospital services, undergoing a period of substantive transformational change in terms of design and service delivery. Matthew’s mind is set to understand and help define quality health care architecture for this century and beyond. Matthews commitment to health architecture extends beyond the pragmatics of the process, and rather could be a transformative influence on architecture as a whole, as our buildings come to understand the requirements for physical and mental health, so will our environments change to support us to lead happier, more fulfilling lives.
Key Client Relationships Good health architecture requires active critical thinking and excellent communication to ensure the architecture process tracks in line with Client expectations. HI are a single client entity responsible for NSW State expenditure on the design and construction of Health Facilities, therefore maintaining positive relationships with the Client entity is of critical importance to any health architecture team hoping to do work in NSW. Matthew has good exposure to and understanding of HI requirements and expectations. Matthew understands that for health architecture projects, the requirement to work quickly and decisively, to deliver
effective integration of technical and clinical inputs to the design, and a careful and measured approach to project scope and delivery. During Matthew’s time as Health Studio Leader, Matthew was able to facilitate an improving relationship with HI, leading to invitations to submit for new projects, with some of those tenders leading to new projects won.
