Our Keiki News • Trends • Tips MAGICAL HOLIDAY CRAFTS Looking for a few holiday crafts to do with the kids? These are great for your own home or to use as gifts! Instagram Coasters The kids can help pick out their favorite Instagram photos, and, depending on their age, can also help create these personalized coasters. Supplies needed include: four 4-inch round, flat cork pieces; Modge Podge glue, card stock paper, Instagram print-outs, Foam or felt mounting dots. Steps to make them: Using the cork piece, trace a circle onto the card stock and the picture print to make sure the size of the materials match. Next, paint a thin layer of Modge Podge onto the cork, then place the card stock on top. Do the same with your Instagram photo, and seal with another thin layer of the glue. Finally, place four mounting dots on the back. Mason Jar Snow Globe Create a fun snow globe using either fake Christmas trees, Rudolph, Santa, Palm Tree (for islandstyle) etc. Supplies needed include: a glue gun; mason jars; fake trees or Christmas characters; and fake snow, glitter, etc. Steps to make them: First, hot glue your fake tree (or character) onto the bottom of the mason jar lid. Next, hot glue
a little bit of fake snow to the bottom of the lid so you can’t see the lid once the tree is in place. Then fill your mason jar with some snow, glitter, or other embellishments. Finally, set your metal lid on the jar and fasten with the mason jar screw cap lid. Driftwood Stars This is a simple project using natural materials. Supplies needed include: driftwood pieces or twigs, a glue gun, clippers, a star template, ribbon, twine, and berries (or other embellishments) to decorate the stars. Steps to make them: cut your driftwood into five equal parts, shape into a star using the template; then secure the ends with ribbon or twine. Embellish with berry garland cut to size, seashells, etc. JP

TEACHING KIDS TO GIVE BACK Fostering a sense of community through volunteering gives children characteristics that will last for years to come. Volunteering is good for others and good for youth… usually. Research shows that youth who volunteer have a lower likelihood of participating in risky behavior, higher levels of academic success, increased self-esteem, increased likelihood of solid employment, and increased volunteer and civic participation as adults. These findings come with a caveat, though. Positive outcomes were found in youth whose volunteer experiences were meaningful and challenging, provided an opportunity to connect with others they wouldn’t normally interact with, growth opportunities, and a broader perspective on the problems of the world. In contrast, volunteer opportunities designed primarily to make youth feel good about themselves can make youth less empathetic and less likely to put the common good before their own, because the volunteer opportunity is about what the youth want, not what society needs. True service is about using your talents for a greater good, even when it’s not fun and not easy. How can parents foster empathy and a sense of community responsibility in children?
1. Be a volunteer. Children of parents who volunteer volunteer at much higher rates than other youth. 2. Make volunteering a lifestyle, not an event. Commit to service opportunities that meet community needs, are meaningful to your family, and allow your family to volunteer together on a regular basis. 3. Cultivate gratitude in your family. People who regularly and genuinely express gratitude are more likely to be caring, compassionate, generous, happy, and healthy. A great starting place to find volunteer opportunities that are a good match for your family is Aloha United Way’s Get Connected Hawaii’s database (http://www.mauiunitedway.org/content/4b60b4f06a049/Volunteer_ Hawaii.html). Our Keiki FaMILY MATTERS
Shrug off Toddler Behavior? By KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.
T
oddlerhood is a precious time. To “Toddle” or to walk unsteadily is symbolic of this period of development. It is a period of tremendous growth physically, socially and psychologically. With mobility, the toddler explores the increasingly larger and interesting world. She is exploring her own sense of self, separating from her parents, yet looking back to make sure they are there for safety. Language is developing through gaze, gestures, sounds and then words. The toddler has increasing ideas and her language is developing for her to express all that she’d like share with you. She has a wide range of feelings that can sometimes be overwhelming. Symbolic capacities begin to emerge through imaginative play. She becomes increasingly interested in peers, looking, sharing space and playing beside others. The toddler begins to explore her newfound sense of independence with frequent “no’s”. The toddler primarily sees the world as an extension of herself and sees herself as making things come about. Safety- One of the primary roles of a parent is to create a sense of safety for your toddler so he can separate from you to explore the world. This comes from a solid attachment to you through shared daily emotional experiences. This allows your toddler to walk away from you and explore his own independence, and feel safe to do so. Separation anxiety is a normal part of development and may emerge at different times in toddlerhood as your child grapples with how to be away from you.
Toddler ‘Behavior’- The toddler has a rich emotional landscape that parents need to be aware of and contend with. All of the toddler’s behaviors are in relation to underlying feelings, either physical feelings coming from their body, or from their emotions. It is important in this stage to join your toddler as a partner in their daily discoveries and to notice the range of emotions they experience. As a parent, you can provide support for your child in experiencing a wide range of emotions, coping with them, problem solving small obstacles together and recovering. When your toddler says “NO”- Remember that to a toddler, the world is their oyster and we adults are often getting in the way of their explorations! The toddler delights in the newfound “NO” to exert their independence. Tactfully set boundaries while also understanding that developmentally, this is an exciting development for your toddler. Tantrums- Tantrums are an outward expression of a BIG emotion. It may be that your youngster can’t verbalize his needs. It may be that your youngster has a new anxiety he is grappling with. It may be that your youngster has a physiologic discomfort; he’s tired, hungry or sick. It is important to respond to what you think is your child’s underlying feelings, rather than just the outward behaviors. This helps your toddler to self-regulate. Learn as much as you can about your child’s development, physically, emotionally and psychologically. Becoming The Parent You Want To Be: A Sourcebook of Strategies for the First 5 Years by Laura Davis & Janis Keyser is an informative practical guide for parents. The Magic Years by Selma Fraiberg (2008) is an excellent resource for learning about the emotional and psychological development in early childhood. Kiegan Blake is an Occupational Therapist, Behavioral Specialist and Director of Maui Center For Child Development. For more information, please call (808) 873-7700 or MauiChildDevelopment.com

Our Keiki GROWING UP
Apps to Bring the Family Together Don’t let your devices disconnect your family. Why not use them to bring the family closer together? In the generation of living “plugged-in” 24/7, it’s easy to live disconnected from your family. Here are a few apps that may help you use today’s technology to actually bring the family together, rather than keep you apart. Note: the following apps can all be downloaded via www.iTunes.com. For family road trips try the “Road Ninja” app. You can discover new places, map out your trip, share your encounters, and save money along the way with special promotions. Finding the nearest public restroom just became as easy as using your Road Ninja! For fun give “Chatterpix” a spin. This app allows you to make anything talk -- pets, friends, doodles, and more! You just take a photo, draw a line to make a mouth, and record your voice. Learning about your family history is an excellent way to connect with each other. Research your ancestry via the “Ancestry” app. You never know what or who you will discover! Music always connects people. Find out what your teen daughter’s favorite band sounds like using the apps for “Pandora” or “Spotify”...And maybe she’ll even let you share your favorite 80's band with her.
A fun and educational tool for youngsters and adults alike is the “PBS Kids Videos” app. Make that wait at the airport go by faster enjoying “Curious George” episodes together. For a sweet story, where you can even record your own voice, try “The Kissing Hand Story” app via Ocean House Media. Make chores fun again by using the “You Rule Chores” app. it makes getting housework done a game for the whole family! “Focus on the Family” offers several apps to keep the family connected: “Focus on Marriage” and “Focus on Parenting,” in particular provide helpful dinner conversation starters, inspirational quotes and marriage encouragement. Finally, last but not least: good ole’ “Instagram.” This uber-popular app allows the family to stay connected through each others' photos throughout the day. So, if you’re going to be “plugged-in”, you might as well stay connected with those you love the most! JP

Our Keiki FAMILY
The Pitfalls of Comparisons Constant comparisons can be detrimental to a child’s self-esteem. Learn ways to change your perception of your child's progress.
“Y
ou’re the only ‘you’ in the world,” we assure our child, celebrating her individuality. And yet, almost every part of her life is assessed in comparison to others–her height and weight is plotted on a growth chart, her pediatrician educates us about “typical” development, her school test scores are ranked in percentiles, her friends talk about who has lost the most teeth or who is the tallest. In such a world, how do you help your child appreciate her unique strengths instead of focusing on how she compares to others? Acknowledge that making comparisons is a natural human tendency. Comparing ourselves to others is the default way we assess how we are doing when there are no objective measures for self-evaluation, such as for parenting and housekeeping.
Be aware of the pitfalls of comparisons. We often compare another’s strengths with our weaknesses, so we always come up short. Even when strengths are compared to strengths, there is always someone who is better (and worse). Understand that constant comparisons can lead to lower self-esteem and a loss of our own sense of direction—instead of doing what is best for ourselves, we make decisions based on what others are doing or valuing. Teens and tweens are particularly vulnerable to this, since peer acceptance is so important to them. Know when comparisons are useful. For example, comparing notes with other parents can help establish consistent rules and expectations for kids who hang together; comparisons provide benchmarks for healthy child development and allow us to have winners in competitions. Change your thinking: • Value uniqueness. • Express gratitude for what you have instead of wanting what others have. • Remember what Einstein said, “Everyone Is a Genius...But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.” KW

Our Keiki PARENTING REsPONDING TO UNWANTED PARENTING ADVICE Friends and family like to contribute by giving advice on parenting when none is asked for. Here are some ways to deal with those unwanted opinions. From the moment others know you are pregnant, parenting advice starts flowing. Nothing can stop it, not even wearing a giant “no parenting advice allowed” sign. A helpful strategy is to “be a duck”— let the advice roll off you like water off a duck’s back. Here are tips for keeping unsolicited advice from ruffling your feathers. Use your power You can’t control what other people say, but you can control your response. Whether advice is helpful, annoying, or neutral is up to you–don’t give someone else the power to annoy you. Know that it’s not about you When you ask for advice because you are struggling with a parenting concern or you want to know how others do things, that’s about you– you are satisfying your desire for information. When people give unsolicited advice, that’s about them—they are satisfying their need to give information. Maybe they need to feel important and valued, maybe seeing you and your child triggered a memory, maybe they feel left out of their own child’s or grandchild’s life. Whatever the reason, it’s not your parenting.
Listen to the intent behind the words Many parents’ go-to response to strangers’ comments is a brief smile or “thank you.” When that won’t work (maybe the advice is coming from a relative), try to respond to the intent behind the words, regardless of what is actually said. Is the speaker: • trying to help you in a difficult moment? • excited about a solution that worked for them? • trying to connect with you about parenting but doesn’t know how? • clueless, with no filter between her brain and her mouth? Focusing on why the speaker is giving advice reduces the sting of inconsiderate remarks. Acknowledge the comment with a neutral “I appreciate your concern,” or “I am glad that worked for you,” and change the subject quickly. KW

Our Keiki SPORT
Preventing Sports Injuries in Children Repeated movements can be the culprits of acute and chronic injuries. Taking time to dabble in other athletic endeavors can make your child stronger.
A
s the first half of school comes to a close and children are gearing up for championships—cross-country races, soccer titles, and gymnastics meets, there are a growing number of sports-related injuries that range from small cuts to concussions. Getting back into the game is important for parents, coaches, and athletes alike, but we can also try to avoid injuries in the first place. Preventing injuries in children can be easy. Make sure injury prevention information is discussed with your team. This includes proper use of safety gear – fitting helmets properly, placing shin guards correctly, and tying shoelaces. Don’t be embarrassed to ask your child’s coach how to do any of these because standards can vary from sport to sport and year to year. A powerful tool to prevent injury is variety. We want our children to be successful, and that means extra practices, private lessons, and outof-season competition. However, repeated movements can be the culprits of acute and chronic injuries. This doesn’t mean you have to stop, but it does mean that playing another sport during the off season, or even giving dance lessons a try, could keep your child healthy longer.
It seems counterintuitive that disregarding sport-specific skills, yet taking time to dabble in other athletic endeavors can make your child stronger, but research shows that waiting to pitch a baseball until age 11 and not playing out-ofseason has no negative effect on pitching speed or accuracy in high school and college. There are some sports, though, where this isn’t possible. In that case, there’s another resource for keeping your child safe and happy. A new way to stay injury-free is neuromuscular training – using one’s mind to tell the body what is happening. Do a squat. Look in the mirror. Did your knees go in? Think of keeping your knees apart. Squat again. Did you do it? Most likely, you corrected your squat. This type of training starts simple, but can accommodate any sport at any level and incorporates balance, strength, and flexibility. Good luck with your sport endeavors this year and stay healthy! Lauren Cowan-Tapia is a Pediatric Physical Therapist who specializes in developmental disorders, connective issue disorders, and sports injuries from birth through age 21. Our Keiki SUPPORT
Let Go of Perfection During the Holidays Discuss with your family what is really important about the Holidays and target your energy to fulfilling those needs. Whether it’s the turkey or the table decorations, most of us have an image of what our holidays should look like. Because it’s “the holidays” we want everything to be perfect. Ironically, that desire actually prevents us from having the holidays we want. Holiday perfectionism often comes from not having your own standards of “good enough.” With everyone from HGTV to the evening newscaster telling you what your holiday table should look like and how to make the perfect pie, it’s hard to know what’s realistic. And more importantly, what you really care about. Imagine that your family lives on another planet. For your holidays you can have any people, foods, decorations, and activities you want (but no servants–you still have to do the work yourself!). You can also eat Spam out of a can and watch sports all day and no one would know or judge. Would you spend three hours making a pie from scratch? Three days decorating the house?
Talk with your family about what they most enjoy about the holidays, and build your activities around that. Eliminate other people’s “shoulds.” If you love eating but don’t like cooking, don’t feel guilty about ordering a pre-cooked Thanksgiving dinner. If you hate cleaning up pine needles for weeks, have a fake tree (or, gasp, no tree at all!). If playing games with your kids all day makes your children feel cherished, don’t trade that for shopping and cooking–a re-gifted present and a storebought pie will be just fine for a holiday party. Letting go of perfectionism means you don’t need to defend your decisions. It means you’ve realized there is no such thing as a “perfect holiday.” So relax and enjoy a holiday season that’s perfect for you and your family. KW

Baby Keiki News • Trends • Tips BABY PROOF YOUR HOME Keeping your baby safe during the toddling stages of her life is essential. Here are some tips for baby-proofing your home: • While cooking, keep pan handles turned away from the edge of the stove, as baby may get curious and pull down a hot pan. • Keep blind cords tied up safely out of reach. • Put “slam-stoppers” on doors so little fingers don’t get caught when they close. One handy tip: cut a pool noodle to size for use in this way. • Affix bookcases and dressers to the wall. • Keep cleaning supplies and other harmful products out of reach and/or locked away in a cabinet. • Put “edge-cushions” on sharp corners, like coffee tables.
• Place proper safety gates at the top and bot tom of every stairwell. • Use electrical outlet covers to protect against shock. Baby-proofing your home is an ongoing process. Continue updating as your needs change and your children grow. JP
SANTA’S COMING TO TOWN AT THE QUEEN KA’AHUMANU CENTER NOVEMBER 15TH THRU DECEMBER 24TH
Santa’s favorite place to visit is Maui, and this year he arrives at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center on Saturday, November 15th to greet all of the keiki on Maui! It’s a ritual of the season–taking your child to the mall so he can tell Santa Claus what he wants for Christmas, and take the annual adorable photo sitting on Jolly St. Nick’s lap. Experienced Santa-snappers suggestions: • Go and Visit Santa: Days before, give your child a glimpse of St. Nick so when you come back for the actual photo, he or she will be more comfortable. Read books with pictures of Santa as well. • Be Prepared: A good nap and a full belly are a good start. Snacks and toys are also key to keeping your child content. • Write your Wish List: Have the wish list on paper and tie it up with a bow and have him or her give it to Santa. On Saturday, December 6th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., all are invited for gingerbread cookie decorating. And while you’re decorating cookies, Santa will stop by to hear your wishes. Photographs with Santa and special packages will be available from November 15 through December 24. For Santa’s hours and more information, visit: www.queenkaahumanucenter.com

Baby Keiki HEALTH
Exercise While You’re Pregnant Keep yourself physically and mentally active during your pregnancy.
So you just discovered you’re pregnant and wonder if you can continue to do the one thing that makes you smile: exercise. The answer is “Yes!” (Of course you’ll want to check with your doctor or midwife for yourself ). But in general, yes, exercise is wonderful for a healthy pregnancy, delivery and postpartum recovery. This isn’t the time to focus on losing weight, but rather, maintaining your strength and endurance. Always be sure to listen to your body, and slow down or stop if you are tired or have trouble breathing. Below are a few exercises that are excellent during pregnancy: 1. Walking allows you to stay fit without putting extra strain on your joints or body. 2. Dancing, without big twists or jumps, is a fun way to keep fit during pregnancy. 3. Prenatal Yoga is a popular choice amongst many mamas-to-be. 4. Squats are wonderful for preparing your body to deliver and to maintain a toned lower body.
5. Planks are great for core strength, as regular crunches are not safe after the first trimester (no laying on your back!). 6. Swimming relieves swollen ankles, makes you feel light and enables you to do your cardio in a safe environment. Doing toning exercises in shallow water is an excellent way to keep your muscles strong as well. Make your pregnancy even more enjoyable by preparing your body for the “big day” and you’ll thank yourself later! JP

Creative Holiday Gifts Some new ideas on giving for this time of year. Whatever gifts you choose for your loved ones, with a little bit of creativity they are sure to be delighted! JP
The Gift That Keeps on Giving Maui yOuTh PhiLharMOniC OrCheSTra TO OFFer Free COnCerT DeCeMBer 14Th Music is truly one of the best gifts you could ever give your child. Establishing a love for music early in life helps provide a foundation for being able to clap in time, hold a tune while singing, and dance to a beat. Playing rhythm instruments just for fun, dancing to lively tunes on the radio and listening to live music are just a few ways that your family can easily incorporate a love for music in your busy lives. A live concert such as the Winter Concert by the Maui youth Philharmonic Orchestra, offers another amazing opportunity: the chance to see real violins, cellos, woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments being played by our own Maui students! This year’s Winter Concert will be held Sunday, December 14 at 3:00 p.m. at H.P. Baldwin Auditorium. Admission is free, and crafts and other homemade goodies will be available for sale. BOOST YOuR FOCuS AND IMPROVE CONCENTRATION
A
s a parent, you are more than likely to have a lot on your plate. It can be tough to stay focused when you are so bombarded by every-day occurances such as emails, phone calls, loving in-
terruptions from your children and spouse, and the ever present and ready online, on-demand world that we live in. There are small changes you can make to help you stay focused when on task or enjoying time with your family. Use these tools to feed your mind, body and soul for a more focused life. Eating focused foods: Cutting out or lessening the sugar in your diet can help you maintain a focused mind. When your mind is working on too much sugar it can have a manic effect and lead to your body and mind crashing. Boost your focus by eating foods that will fuel your mind such as leafy greens, nuts, seeds and fruits like avocados. Stick to one task at a time: Set a plan to tackle a project for one hour or even just thirty minutes, but only do that task. Don’t get off track by trying to be a multi-tasker. Focusing on one thing at a time allows you to give that task your undivided attention and perform it well, rather than doing four things all at 25%. Make a plan. Ever notice how you can get through a trip to the grocery store so much faster and cheaper when you have a list? Lists and plans can help you keep on target with any task you are doing, whether it’s your house cleaning to-dos, Saturday game days with the kids, or that grocery shopping trip. Make a list, plan it out and stick to it for a more focused experience.
TuRNKEY MuSIC ACADAMY OFFERING KIDS A DIFFERENT KIND OF MUSICAL EXPERIENCE TurnKey Music Academy is the fresh face of music instruction on Maui. Launching a brand new youth Choir, the school aims to be Maui’s hip alternative to the run-of-the-mill mainstream music curriculum. “A repertoire chosen by students fuels the passion,” says co-founder Toby Couture, “while our experience allows the same music fundamentals to be taught in an exciting way.” Sessions are available on a variety of instruments and vocal styles. “Singers should have the opportunity to sing with a live band, not just along with a CD,” Turnkey co-founder Danielle Delaunay insists. “It makes the process more fun when they can do it with friends.” In the Choir setting, or in smaller groups (“Band Practice”) with a familiar pop/rock instrumentation, the school encourages students to write their own songs as well as covers, record original demos and start playing their own shows. Those who want to take their musicianship to the next level will find a group of like-minded students on their path to musical excellence. To find out more visit: www.turnkeymusicacademy.com

Jump Start Joy in the New Year ”For happiness, one needs security, but joy can spring like a flower even from the cliffs of despair.” Anne Morrow Lindbergh
There’s a distinct difference between “happiness” and “joy,” for as Lindbergh said, one can retain joy even amidst trial and despair, whereas happiness is a much more temporary feeling. So as the New year approaches, how do we inspire true joy in our lives, regardless of our current situations? Hope is a key ingredient to finding joy in our lives. But what if we’re stuck in a rut, with no hope in sight? Then it’s time to dig deep and remember those hidden dreams in your heart. Was there a time you wanted to learn how to surf, or take a painting class, or hike Haleakala, or go on a girls’ weekend? Remembering those past aspirations allows us to find hope for the future. To take this concept a step further you could create a “dream board" by using magazine clippings,
your own illustrations, favorite quotes, etc., to design a visual representation of your goals for the New year. Another way you can find joy in this holiday season is to spend time with people you enjoy. Creating memories together, planning for the New year together, enjoying a meal or beach day out are sure ways to jumpstart joy in your heart. We are made to live in community, and by nurturing our relationships we are laying a firm foundation of encouragement for the new year. We all need joy in our lives, so why not start today? JP

As the sun begins to warm the cool morning air, dew still sparkling on fresh evergreens, Haleakala Waldorf School’s 29th anniversary Holiday Faire will unfold Saturday, December 6, 9am-4pm. At 10 am, the overwhelmingly joyous sound of the Annual Elf Parade will add to the ambiance of laughter, smiles and aloha. Carolers will stroll by as you shop amongst the best gifts from local artisans, Homemade Baked Goods, and Farmer’s Market. Enjoy live entertainment while you relax over an ‘ono lunch. Hawaii Energy’s
Energy Saving Tips All 12 Days of them! Why not use this Christmas to celebrate conserving electricity rather than using it unscrupilously. Here are some tips to make less impact at Christmas.
N
othing gets us in the yuletide cheer like spending time with family, enjoying the neighborhood’s twinkling Christmas lights or feasting on auntie’s homemade gingerbread cookies. However, when we realize how much our electric bill is a month later things may not be so merry.
won’t last long so bundle up and enjoy the chilly weather before summer rolls around. However, some days are just plain hot. If you’ve been relying on an old air conditioner, consider upgrading to a new ENERGy STAR® model. Hawaii Energy provides a $50 rebate and will recycle the old working one for free.
Hawaii Energy, the ratepayer-funded energy conservation and efficiency program for Maui, Hawaii and Honolulu counties, prepared “12 Days of Energy-Saving Tips” that can help you save energy and money on your electric bill this holiday season.
DAY 4: Try Alternative Cooking Methods
DAY 1: Buy ENERGY STAR® Electronics
A 16-pound turkey can take up to four hours to cook in a conventional oven. Rather than using all that electricity, consider cooking it for less than two hours outdoors kiawe-style. That smoky, succulent turkey will take half the time to cook but still leave guests fully satisfied.
Are electronics on your family’s wish list? If so, consider purchasing ENERGy STAR® electronics. Products can range from televisions and DVD players to cordless phones. They use far less energy than non-certified products. To learn more, visit ENERGy STAR’S website: www.energystar. gov/products/certified-products and view the “electronics” section.
DAY 5: Install a Timer
DAY 2: Keep Oven Doors Closed
If your Christmas tree lights are already decked out, extra lamps or permanent lighting fixtures may not be needed. The Christmas tree alone can be the showpiece and illuminate the room.
you’ll probably have family over during the holidays and some may want to peek in the oven to see what’s cooking. However, tell them to keep the oven door closed. Ovens lose about 25 degrees each time they’re opened and require additional energy to bring the temperature back up. DAY 3: Turn Off the Air Conditioner Leave the air conditioner off. Our Hawaii “winters”
Plug indoor and outdoor lighting displays into timers that can be programmed to run in the evening hours and turn off by the time you go to bed. Or simply unplug your lights when not in use. DAY 6: Use Less Lighting Fixtures
DAY 7: Save Energy When Doing Laundry Spills and stains are inevitable during the holidays. Wash full loads in cold water rather than hot since it requires far more electricity to heat. Skip the dryer. Hang clothes outside and put the trade winds to good use.

DAY 8: Unplug Electronics Not in Use Most electronic devices use electricity even when the power is turned off – called a “phantom” or “vampire” load. Be sure to unplug any laptops, video games, coffee pots and cell phone chargers not in use. DAY 9: Switch to LED Christmas Lights If you haven’t already switched to LED Christmas lights, consider making the change. LEDs use about 70 – 80% less energy than typical incandescent Christmas lights. Plus, LEDs come in different shapes, colors and sizes so let your creativity run wild rather than the cost of your electric bill. DAY 10: Consider Fiber Optic Decorations
cated at the base of the unit to light up the entire decoration. DAY 11: Limit Christmas Tree Lights Rather than adding more lights to make your Christmas tree glow, consider enhancing its visual appeal with mirrored ornaments, tinsel or any other reflective items to make it sparkle. DAY 12: Walk and Enjoy Christmas Lights Walk. Burn a few calories with the family. What could be better? Well, maybe taking a walk around your neighborhood to check out everyone’s Christmas lights on their houses (hopefully they’ve followed “Day 5” and installed a timer). For more energy-saving tips this holiday season and beyond, visit HawaiiEnergy.com.
Fiber optic trees and decorations are great for saving energy. They use a single light bulb lo-

Learning to Chill Don’t just slow down... take time to enliven yourself. Walk. Learning to chill could be as simple as taking a brisk walk. Studies show that exercise helps one not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. An added bonus: if you walk outside you’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy fresh air.
“S
low down. This ain’t the Mainland” is a quote often seen on the Hawaiian Islands. For those of us who live on Maui, doing life on “island time” is more feasible than in other parts of the world, but we still face daily struggles that cause stress levels to rise and we need to incorporate tools into our lives to learn how to “chill,” i.e. slow down and relax. Breathe. Take a moment to slowly breathe in, slowly breathe out. Some find it difficult to even stop for a minute to focus on the simple act of breathing. However, breathing techniques may help detoxify your body, release tension, relieve pain, strengthen your immune system and relieve stress, among other benefits. Go ahead, just breathe....
Dance. Go ahead, get up and dance. It’s hard to stay tied up in anxiety when you’re dancing to “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. I dare you to try it! Pray. Stopping to pray (or meditate) allows us to remember that life is more than the single worry or fear or frustration we may face. We are made for a greater purpose and praying centers one’s soul on the grandeur of life, and the beautiful gifts that surround us: a child’s laughter, a loving dog, a stunning sunrise...they are all gifts to us! Journal. Keeping a gratitude journal is another way to learn how to relax. Counting your blessings and joys give you a deeper appreciation for life, allowing you to relax more easily. Whatever way you choose to chill, know that you are in the best place in the world to do so... you truly can “relax...this ain’t the Mainland!” JP

Holiday Eating Survival Strategies One of the joys of the holiday season is gathering with ohana and eating! Special family recipes passed down from generation to generation, comfort foods and delicious desserts abound, so how is one to stay healthy during this time of food and more food? With any survival strategy, you need a few tools in your healthy-eating-belt: • Don’t attend a holiday party hungry. Have a small snack or meal prior to going so you have more self-control when presented with tempting options. • Fill your plate with healthy options first, i.e. fresh fruits, vegetables and meats, prior to the other less healthy foods. • Remember that drinks have calories, too. Be sure to drink plenty of water (best option) and save your calories for real food. • Always bring a healthy dish to share, so wherever you go you will know that there is an option that won’t be so rough on your waistline down the road. • Enjoy your favorite treat, but in moderation. Knowing that you can have your favorite piece
of cake or sugar cookie will allow you to eat without feeling like you’re missing out on something. • Savor your food by focusing on eating, rather than mindlessly consuming everything. It helps to take the time to chew and eat at the dinner table. Also, remember to keep exercise in your daily routine, as it will help balance out any treats you enjoy. It is a time of celebration, after all, so by looking at the whole picture and not just one meal, you can feel more at ease about your eating habits going into this special time of year. JP
