Our Keiki News • Trends • Tips Fun water games for your keiki Staying cool and having fun are usually at the top of every kid’s list for summertime. Here are some fun water games for them to play. Ice Cube Painting: Grab ice cube trays and fill them with water. Mix watercolors in each cube spot. Freeze overnight. Pop them into a bowl the next day and head outdoors for some colorful, messy fun. Your keiki can paint onto paper, yardstick or even fabric with the ice cube paints. Water Balloon Piñata: Fill several water balloons with water, then hang them upside down using heavy-duty yarn. You may hang them on monkey bars, tree branches, etc., then let the kids whack away with a bat. Water Balloon Catch: Fill water balloons with water, then place in a large bucket. Two people toss the water balloons to each other, trying to keep them intact as they throw them. If you have four or more people, you can make it a competition and see who keeps the most water balloons from bursting open. Sprinkler Fun: Turn on the sprinklers and let your kids play tag in the yard. They’ll have fun and cool down at the same time!

Water Balloon Baseball: Fill water balloons with water, then place in a large bucket. One person tosses a water balloon to another person, who is holding a plastic bat. See how many water balloons the plastic bat can pop. If you’re heading to the pool, water volleyball, Marco Polo and ring tossing are all fun games to play in the water. Whether you’re in the water or out, water games are an excellent option for cooling down and making memories with your keiki. JP

Summer Calls for Crafts Here’s a fun activity for the kids to try at home in between jaunts to the sand. School may be out and days may be spent mostly at the beach, but that’s no reason why you can’t bring the beach home with a little craft time. Kids love to play in the waves at the beach so they will love making waves at home. Don’t worry, this won’t get your bathroom drenched or cause a typhoon of trouble. To make waves in a bottle, gather the following list of items: • A clear, plastic water bottle filled with about 60% water • Baby oil • Blue food coloring • Glitter (this is optional) Here’s the fun and easy part - that your older kids can do themselves! Add all of the ingredients to the water in the bottle. Be sure to add them in this order: blue food coloring, glitter and then baby oil. Close the bottle tight and let your kids move the water back and forth while on its side. They will ooh and ahh over the sparkly waves.

Note! If you don’t want little hands to open up the ocean on your living room floor, you can super glue the cap on when you close it. Now go have fun and get crafty! SB

Frozen Treats to Beat the Heat One way to beat the heat and get your kids involved in the kitchen is to make frozen treats together! Frozen Chocolate-Covered Banana Bites Ingredients: 1/4 cup Chocolate Chips, 1/4 cup Peanut Butter, Two Large Bananas. Set out a cookie sheet with parchment paper on top. Cut up the bananas into 5-6 pieces each. Heat the chocolate chips and peanut butter in the microwave or in a saucepan on the stove until melted. Stir until smooth. Dip banana pieces in the chocolate mixture, then place on parchment paper. Cover the top of banana pieces with remaining chocolate mixture. Place pan of chocolate-covered banana pieces in the freezer for about an hour. Once hardened, transfer treats into an airtight container to freeze overnight. Frozen Yogurt Buttons Ingredients: Your Favorite Yogurt. Place a small ziplock bag over a cup. Fill the ziplock bag with yogurt. Snip one corner of the bag. Pipe onto cookie sheets lined with parch-

ment paper. Place pan in freezer for one hour. Transfer yogurt buttons into an airtight container. Store in the freezer until ready to serve. Frozen Chocolate Banana “Ice Cream” Ingredients: 3-4 Bananas (sliced, then frozen) A spoonful of peanut butter, 2-3 tsp. cocoa powder. Place frozen bananas in a food processor and blend until smooth. Once it’s completely smooth, you may add the peanut butter and cocoa powder for more flavor. Frozen Grapes Ingredients: Seedless Grapes. Thoroughly wash seedless grapes. Remove grapes from stems. Thanks to Maui resident Arnie Koss and his twin brother Ron (who together co-founded Earth’s Best Baby Foods in the 1980s) there’s a new ice cream choice that’s richly delicious and smartly nutritious. Named Brio (which means “vigor”), it has half the fat of comparable flavors of premium ice cream, 65% less saturated fat and only 160-170 calories. Made with top quality ingredients including rBST-free milk, Brio is non-GMO, certified gluten free and low glycemic. Brio’s five flavors are made naturally, with ingredients including Madagascar vanilla, organic salted caramel, coffee, cocoa, strawberries and mango. Best of all, Brio offers many nutritional benefits: balanced Omega 3-6-9s, 6g protein and 2 g prebiotic fiber, and is rich in antioxidants, calcium, magnesium and Vitamin D. Our Keiki SLEEP

Adolescents Still Need Sleep By Maka’ala palmore haleakala waldorf school

Numerous studies have verified the link between sleep and many different facets of health, including: • Weight: Short sleep leads to increased risk of obesity in children and young adults. • Academic Performance: Quality and quantity of sleep is closely related to academic performance in terms of comprehension and recall.

S

leep protects our memory, our hearts, and our health. It keeps our dispositions sunny, our minds alert and our bodies energetic. The need for adequate sleep is a well-documented need for human beings. Unfortunately, most adolescent kids think giving up sleep to accomplish all that they have on their plates is acceptable and normal. Somewhere along the way they began to think being older means sleeping less. On average, teens need about 10 hours of sleep a night. The sad truth is that very few of our kids are meeting these numbers. Sleep gives the body a chance to heal, cells a chance to regenerate, muscles a chance to repair, and the brain a chance to recalibrate hormone levels that affect mood, appetite and the ability to focus. “Sleep really impacts how well kids’ brains function, from how much information they can absorb to how they perform in recall and retention,” says Dr. Richards, PhD, a director at the Pediatric Behavioral Health Department at Cleveland Clinic. For example, a teenager may have studied plenty to prepare for a test, but if they don’t sleep well the night before, they will have a harder time accessing the information.

• Risky Behaviors: Adolescents who sleep less than eight hours a night are significantly more likely to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol. • Emotional Stability: Adolescents who go to bed at midnight or later had a 24% higher chance of being depressed and a 20% greater chance of having suicidal thoughts. Here are suggestions for helping your kids get the z’s they so desperately need: • Limit access to screens by keeping electronic devices out of your kids’ bedrooms. • Teach kids to plan for a reasonable bedtime based on what time they need to wake up. • Keep it regular leaving enough wiggle room to allow for some diversions from routine— even on Saturdays and Sundays. • Take time to wind down mentally and physically before bed by establishing a brief, relaxing routine that they do every night. • Create a sleep-friendly environment without too much light that is a seasonally appropriate temperature. • Be the change and model good sleep habits with your own nightly ritual. Our Keiki Balance

The Important Relationship Between Structure & Spontaneity By KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.

S

tructure and spontaneity – they are both important in child rearing and striking the balance is the key! Basic structure through routines provides the landscape for allowing your child to enjoy spontaneity. • Routines provide the foundation for the child’s physiologic regulatory functions by establishing consistency in sleep-wake cycles as well as eating and elimination. When these functions are consistent, they support your child’s ability to self-regulate, and your child is happier. • Consistency in routine is one key factor providing your child with a sense of security and safety. He can ‘count on’ knowing how the routine goes. He can then be more available to cope with as well as enjoy novelty. • Daily and weekly routines allow your child to self-regulate as she can remain in a calm state, knowing what is coming up to emotionally prepare herself in advance. When the routine changes daily, it gives her the impression that nothing is secure and causes her to go in an elevated state of arousal, wondering what is coming up. Spontaneity at this point would be overwhelming rather than pleasurable. • Routine provides structure for setting boundaries and makes parenting easier. Your child gets to know that after tooth brushing, he gets 2 stories and then a back rub and then lights out; it eliminates daily negotiating. Then when an unexpected event arises, it is special and can be appreciated.

• Throughout the child’s development, from toddlerhood to adolescence, children push boundaries. They are looking for the perimeter in order to clarify the system and then to organize themselves within it. A lack of structure provides inconsistent boundaries and is emotionally confusing for the child, not providing the “container” from which to organize themselves. • Participating in routines teaches your child important cognitive skills including organization, time management and selfmonitoring skills. • Predictable routine helps your child to feel organized emotionally. • Without routines, spontaneity just feels like disorganization. In child rearing, the day rarely goes as planned. The daily routines, are however, the glue for coping with spontaneous events across the rest of the day. If, for example, your child has a predictable morning and evening routine, it creates the platform of security and enjoying a spontaneous outing in the afternoon. Even when on vacation, it is typically more enjoyable if the family can keep consistency in the morning and evening routines, which function as the bookends to hold the novel events of the day together. You and your child will enjoy the spontaneous events more fully in the context of predictable routines

! N U FTHINGS TO DO IN THE SUMMER

Keep the excitement of summer going all season long with this Summer Bucket List!

Y

ou may start out your summer strong, full of enthusiasm for time with your keiki, but after the tenth trip to the beach your ideas and energy may begin to wane. Here are some fun things to do in the summer, which will hopefully keep your enthusiasm going until that school bell rings and classes are back in session. One way to combat the summer blues is by creating a family summer bucket list. Here are a few things to add to yours: • Go for a hike. • Play in the sprinkler. • Visit your kid’s favorite playground. • Visit the animal shelter and play with the animals. • Clean up a beach one morning. • Build a blanket fort and “camp” in the living room. • Go to Iao Valley and explore. • Bake cookies and take them to your local fire station.

• Make ice cream. • Go fishing. • Go to the local pool. • Get a pet rock. • Have a water balloon fight. • Go shelling. • Make a necklace from your finds. • Play “I Spy.” • Go on a scavenger hunt together. • Fly kites. • Take an art class. • Watch the stars at night. • Visit Haleakala National Park. • Visit story time at the local library. • Nap in a hammock. • Make paper airplanes. • Watch the clouds and pick out shapes. • Have a play-date. • Make homemade bubbles. • Take a bike ride. • Play volleyball. • Start a container garden together. • Learn how to surf. • Paint together. What will you add to your family’s summer activities? JP

Live Theatre at MAPA this Summer! Live theatre is blossoming this summer at Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA). With two blockbuster musical productions, there’s something for everyone all summer long! In July, MAPA students will present the musical Oliver! Appropriate for all ages, Oliver! is based on Charles Dickens’ classic tale and includes some of musical theatre’s most famous songs such as “Food Glorious Food” and “Consider Yourself,” The show runs six performances July 17-26. In August, MAPA LIVE brings the Andrew Lloyd Webber rock musical Evita to the MACC’s Castle Theater for six performances only August 21-30. With its spectacular choreography and unforgettable score, including the iconic “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” Evita shares the passionate story of Eva Peron, Argentina’s most beloved First Lady. Our Keiki safety

Kids & Dehydration Lots of water is key to a safe and fun-filled summer. Keep your child well hydrated and know the indicators of fluid loss. Hydration is a lifestyle! Although summer may mean fun in the sun, it can also come with health woes if you are not cautious. “It is important for kids to stay hydrated especially in the hot summer months, because you lose fluids through sweating, breathing and going to the bathroom,” said Lisa Matsunaga, dietician. Water has a vital role. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that it helps the body to keep its temperature normal, lubricates and cushions your joints, protects your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues, and gets rid of wastes through urination, perspiration and bowel movements. If you do not feel thirsty, you can get fluids through soups, tomatoes, oranges, celery or melons. You need to pay attention to the indicators of fluid loss in your child. “The easiest way to know your hydration status is to look at the color of your urine,” said Matsunaga. “If it is clear or light yellow, you are well-hydrated, but if it is lemonade color or darker, you need to drink more water,” said Matsunaga. The American Academy of Pediatrics wants parents to know the signs of dehydration. Symptoms include: dry or sticky mouth; dry, cool skin; lethargy or irritability; fatigue or dizziness in an older child; lack of urine or wet diapers for 6 to 8 hours in an infant; and lack of urine for 12 hours in an

older child. Thirst is not a good early measure of dehydration; by the time a child is thirsty he is probably already dehydrated. If your child does not like water, try adding a wedge of lime or lemon to improve the taste. Always keep drinks with you, even if you are just out for a few hours. “Make sure your child has access to water and have him drink small sips frequently when active, keeping sugary drinks like soda to a minimum,” said Matsunaga. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asks that people drink several glasses of water or other fluid after the physical activity is completed, and to drink before they even feel thirsty. Eventually, staying hydrated will become part of your child’s lifestyle. JL

Will’s Water Day

SUNDAY, May 31ST >> 11AM–4PM >> Hanakao’o Beach, ka’anapali

The third annual Will’s Water Day will be at Hanaokao’o (canoe) beach, Ka’anapali, on May 31, 2015. Conceived by legendary waterman Archie Kalepa and funded and operated by the Will Smith Foundation, Will’s Water Day is where children of all ages come together to learn about beach and surf safety from top professional surfers, paddle boarders and watermen. Maui Fire Department Chief Jeff Murray helps educate the kids on emergency preparedness and safety. The kids get out in the ocean in outrigger canoes and Maui Ocean Safety takes them for a ride on the Jet Ski rescue sled. This is a free event in Memory of Will Smith who was killed by a reckless driver on the Pali on June 3, 2007. Local and visiting kids of all ages are welcome. Watch your kids from the grass or help out! The first 100 kids receive free commemorative t-shirts courtesy of Naish.

Indoors or out, summer is the perfect time to engage in fun, hands-on learning. Even though the school year is over, you can offer your child an education year-round. “You can pride yourself on having your child not only create, but stay active throughout the summer,” said Erin Woodridge, development and marketing manager at Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center. There is enormous value in keeping your child engaged. “Focus on experiential learning, projected learning, the performing arts, fine arts and athletics,” said Ryan Kirkham, principal at Maui Preparatory Academy. Whether you choose to send your child to a camp or plan activities as a family, there is so much you can do. “There are opportunities for marine science, Hawaiian archeology, robotics, English language learning and Hawaiian water sports like surfing,” said Kirkham. Instead of watching television, take the time to visit parks, museums and libraries. Make sure you continue reading because it increases both vocabulary and comprehension. Your child may prefer to read alone or with you, but regardless, discuss the book and share your thoughts. Do not leave writing or math behind either. Turn education into games

Kids are anxious to come back to school and share what they did over the summer. National Parks & Recreation Month July is National Recreation and Parks month. Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation will join in the celebration with a proclamation by the Mayor. The National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) will celebrate their 30th anniversary by looking back at our nation’s parks and what things were like 30 years ago. Here in Maui County, the parks department was established in 1952. We will celebrate even more years of service to our community, 63 years to be exact. Hawaii Recreation and Parks Society, a statewide organization of parks professionals, is sponsoring an art poster contest for kids. We will ask youth to portray what is important to them about parks. Children at the PALS sites will contribute to the contest. The poster will serve as education regarding the importance of parks to the quality of life we enjoy. Parks are one of the reasons that Maui qualifies as the healthiest county in the state according to a recent study.

EDUCATION THERAPY Specialized Tutoring

By MR. JUN WU NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHER MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL MATH Please describe your role at HTA. I am the Maui-based math teacher supporting our middle school and high school students in mathematics. I meet with the students online and in our Learning Centers in Kahului and the West Side. How did you come to choose to teach at HTA? I am a big fan of technology, and I believe that the HTA Blended Learning model is the future of education. My role is that of learning facilitator where I get to use the latest in pedagogy and technology to help our students achieve success. What is the advantage of the Blended Learning model? It is a hybrid education where we combine online and face-to-face learning. It offers flexibility and differentiation to all levels and types of learners. At HTA, teachers, families, a.k.a “leaning coaches”, and the community are all equally involved in the child’s education. Can students learn math this way? Our curriculum is highly rigorous, and teachers offer many opportunities for academic support virtually and in person. Students and teachers are not bound by any normal school hour schedule. Also, we use the latest in online collaborative technology to help the student learn the material.”

Well, for example, the high-schoolers use OnSync, which is a rich online meeting software that enables the whole class to be “in-class” and to be engaged in the learning. These high school students are offered the use of our HTA, state-of-the-art, touch-screen laptops to use for all their classes. My students use these to handwrite their solutions to my “Real-Life” math problems using EduCreations. I feel that a lot of my students are doing way more than what they would be doing in a more traditional school. The Maui Cup 2015 tournament is a fantastic event and one of the fastest growing youth soccer tournaments in Hawaii. This is a great opportunity to support the game of youth soccer over a great family weekend. “We are excited and looking forward to an enjoyable and competitive summer youth tournament over the July 4th weekend. We have a vibrant youth soccer culture here in Maui that really works hard to make special events like this happen. We have been receiving a lot of interest from teams from the other islands, and from some top players and teams from Guam and California that plan to attend and that makes it exciting to host them. It should be a great weekend of soccer and allow all our Maui youth teams to play against teams the wouldn’t usually play.” Paul Holocher,, Maui United Soccer, Director of Development.

Baby Keiki News • Trends • Tips Enjoy Your Summer Pregnancy For Maui moms, this article could be titled, “Enjoy Your Maui Pregnancy,” since we are in the land of the “endless summer.” If you’re pregnant and wondering how to handle the heat and humidity, these tips may help: Drink plenty of water. During the warmer months, our bodies need as much help as possible with staying cool. Add on the reality that most homes on Maui do not have air conditioning, natural ways to cool off are essential. Simply drinking plenty of water, before you even feel “parched,” will help your body cool down, as well as cleanse your body of toxins and give you a little more energy. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. The maxi dress or skirt is your best friend when it comes to enjoying your summer pregnancy. The breathable fabric helps your blood circulation, which may help reduce swelling. Plus, after the baby arrives, you can add a belt to your maxi dress and continue wearing it while you get back into shape. Head to the beach or pool. Swimming is a wonderful exercise while pregnant, as it helps reduce swelling and takes weight off of your joints, allowing you to move more freely. Water aerobics and toning is another option over land exercises.

Spray whenever necessary. Find air conditioning: head to the library, movie theater or museum to enjoy a cooler environment and a bit of relief from the heat. The Importance of Talking to Your Baby By Lisa Kimura

W

hat’s one of the best gifts you can give your baby? The gift of gab! Babies are constantly absorbing and processing language, and the more words they hear, the more opportunities they have to make sense of the world around them. It may be hard to transform in to a chatterbox right away, but encourage your child’s caregivers and people in your household to illustrate the world around them with words. Talk about what you’re pulling out of the fridge to eat; the colors of the clothes you’re folding; or the animals and plants you see on a neighborhood walk. There’s always plenty to say once you get in the habit of talking about what you’re seeing, feeling and experiencing. The more you vary your tone and intonation, the more your child learns how to exchange conversation. Wait for baby to coo or babble back, and continue on; narrating what’s happening around you throughout the day. It doesn’t matter that you don’t get much of a response, but giving your baby an opportunity to take part in a conversation encourages language development. The more they’re exposed to a variety of words, the better; with research showing that it leads to future academic and economic success.

It seems simple, and really, it is. Just talk! Your baby is listening. Need more ideas on how to help your baby develop as healthy as possible during pregnancy and through the first year? Download the new Text4baby app, or text “BABY” to 511411 to enroll in the text messaging service. You’ll receive customized information each week, timed to your baby’s age and development. Baby Keiki Education

Montessori on Maui By thomas daubert What is the Montessori Method? Here on Maui, we are fortunate to have a number of private schools that provide unique educational pathways for our children. These institutions round out the opportunities available through our public education system so that families have choices that best meet their needs. Two of our schools offer an educational model that is based on the principles first developed by Dr. Maria Montessori over 100 years ago: Montessori Hale O Keiki in Kihei and the Montessori School of Maui in Makawao. Who was Dr. Montessori? Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator. When she graduated from medical school in 1896, she was among Italy’s first female physicians. Her early medical practice focused on psychiatry and she later developed a lasting interest in education. Dr. Montessori’s studies led her to observe and question the prevailing methods of teaching children. In 1907, Dr. Montessori opened the Casa de Bambini (House of Children), a childcare center in Rome. Utilizing scientific observation and experiences gained from her studies, she designed learning materials and a classroom environment that fosters each child’s natural desire to learn. News of the school’s success spread and, today, there are more than 22,000 Montessori schools in over 110 countries worldwide.

Tips for Treating Haole Rot

How is this practiced today? Montessori schools continue to utilize the timehonored principles of Dr. Maria Montessori to provide students with the academic and social foundation needed for future success. The methodology remains rooted in observation, peer learning, the use of tactile learning materials and the development of intrinsic motivation. Multiple grades are combined within each classroom, allowing students to practice leadership and social skills, develop inner discipline and approach learning through joyful inquiry in a prepared environment. Montessori classrooms offer guided instruction, group work and individual study, and each child is allowed to learn at their own speed, according to their own level of accomplishment, in a non-competitive atmosphere. Locally, Montessori Hale O Keiki serves students from age 3 through the 8th grade and the Montessori School of Maui serves young people from the age of 18 months through the 8th grade. For more information: Montessori Hale O Keiki • Kihei (808) 874-7441 • www.mhok.org Montessori School of Maui • Makawao

Haole Rot, or as they call it in the medical field, Tinea Versicolor, is a common skin fungal infection. It affects all ages and develops from sweat mixing with an overgrowth of yeast on the skin’s surface. Haole Rot is usually more noticeable with sun exposure as all areas of your skin get tan except for where you have the fungus. If you are prone to Haole Rot, avoid excessive heat and sweating and do not moisturize your skin. Instead, dry your skin. Even though this is a dry, scaly infection, lubricants “feed the fungus”, so no moisturizers, please. Also to help reduce yeast in your body, try eliminating or reducing sugary carbohydrates. Fortunately, Haole Rot can be treated with a topical or oral medication prescribed by a doctor, and it takes only one to two weeks to go away, depending on the severity. The infection can stay on clothing and towels so be sure to wash towels and clothing daily and change your bedding for the first few days of treating the skin fungus. It is a hassle, but well worth getting rid of it for good! NS

Baby Keiki beach

Beach with Baby Maui’s beautiful beaches are a great place to spend time with your baby. Going to the beach with your baby doesn’t have to be a hassle. In fact, it can become a fun activity that you cherish together for years to come. Here are some tips to help your baby embrace the beach: 1. Pack lightly. You may be tempted to bring the stroller, twenty beach toys and enough food for the week. However, by bringing only the essentials for you and your baby, you will have less to lose and be able to focus on enjoying your time together at the beach. Use a backpack to store your essentials and dress ready for the beach, perhaps wearing a sarong that can double as a beach blanket. 2. Apply sun protection prior to leaving for the beach, then pack some for later in the day. In addition to sunblock, be sure to grab a beach hat, rashguard or t-shirt, sunglasses, etc. 3. Keep baby powder in your car, as it easily removes sand from your baby’s skin after a long day at the beach. 4. Reuse large juice jugs and store water inside. The water stays warm, and allows you an easy option for rinsing off your baby while avoiding cold beach showers.

5. Bring an inexpensive blow-up baby pool for your baby to play in If she does not care for sand. It’s a clean space for her to relax and play with toys, while also keeping her within arm’s reach. 6. Introduce your baby to the ocean by going when the water is calm. Show your baby how to splash and watch his cues. If he becomes nervous, stay calm yourself, and try again later. Also, as your baby sees you having fun in the water, he will want to as well. Give it time if your baby isn’t ready for the ocean. Many babies learn how to swim and even surf, so keep practicing and have fun in the process. 7. Let your baby explore. The beach offers many learning opportunities for developing senses. From the texture of the sand to the roar of the sea, exploring the beach together enriches your baby’s development. JP

Camping with Your Family Family camping tips for fun, outdoor adventures!

W

ith summer comes less rain, more sunlight and even better temps. All of that means that it’s the perfect time for a family camping trip! Here are some of the things to look for to help make planning for a family camping trip easier Check out the site Does the site have bathrooms? Or showers? Or running water? These things can make a huge difference on what you bring and how you prepare for your trip. Bring more water than you need so you can use it to brush your teeth, clean the dishes and of course drink. No bathroom? Have a way to make it easy for the little ones. You may want to grab a cheap toilet training potty for them. It’ll be much easier than having them squat the whole time. Are there barbeques to cook on? If there aren’t any barbeques you’ll have to bring your own. This can also change up the menu for your camping trip as you plan things. Do you need a camping permit? Or is camping even allowed? Always check for signs to be sure that you are ok to camp there or that you have the paperwork

and permits to camp in a certain locations. Be mindful of their fire rules - do they allow bonfires to roast those marshmallows? Pay attention to temperatures Nighttime can get cold in upcountry while at the beach it may stay pretty mild. Do your homework and pack accordingly. Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean it will stay hot all night long. Maui Family Magazines Top Camping Tips • Bring baby wipes - these can wash hands and faces and other body parts when a shower isn’t on the agenda. • Remember those trash bags - Never leave trash and try to leave your camping spot nicer than when you got there. • Don’t forget the camera - capturing dirty camping memories is a must! • Always have music - don’t forget a speaker for your iPod. Music makes any camping trip complete. SB

Summer beauty for mom Enjoy these beauty tips for the beach days of summer! Long days at the beach can leave your hair and skin dry to say the least. Try these summer beauty tricks to keep looking your best. Your beauty routine begins with your inner health. By eating fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as drinking plenty of fresh water, you provide a great baseline for your outward beauty. In addition to eating healthy, exercising regularly will also help detoxify your body, also benefiting your hair and skin. Once these two elements are in place, consider doing the following: Use organic coconut oil as your moisturizer. Apply the coconut oil to your face and body for a natural skin moisturizer. It also contains a low S.P.F., providing some sun protection as well. Keep makeup to a minimum. Your pores need to breathe, so skip the powder and blush, and opt for lightweight options, such as blush gel and a tinted moisturizer. In addition to using organic coconut oil on your skin, aloe vera is another way to heal and soothe your skin. Keep an aloe vera plant at home, so you have it available year-round.

Simply cut off a leaf whenever needed! For your hair, organic coconut oil is another helpful ingredient to provide moisture and shine. Before you wash your hair, massage the coconut oil into your hair. After twenty minutes (or longer), wash out and style. For a natural option to wash your hair, use baking soda combined with water as a cleanser, then rinse with apple cider vinegar. Your hair will thank you! To style your hair, opt for braids and hair buns, as they keep your hair out of your face, and when you take your hair down, you will have that wavy beach hair everyone craves! JP

intimidating at first, fishing is easy once you get the hang of it. All you have to do is understand how the fishing rod is used and the correct way to cast and tie knots. “Find a body of water that is safe, find out what fish live there, get appropriate bait and give it a shot,” said Mackin. The only equipment you need is a fishing rod with a small hook and sinker with a live worm or, if in saltwater, shrimp or a piece of cut squid. Start basic and work your way up. Remember that practice makes perfect. “Look for signs of fish or conditions that might hold fish such as bait in the water, birds hunting fish or fish breaking water, and be sure to take care of your equipment, especially the line, and tie proper and strong knots so you do not lose a great fish,” said Mackin. Inquire about the location to be sure the shorelines are stable and the currents are not too strong. “Understand you are in a wild ecosystem and there are harmful and potentially dangerous plants and animals you may expose yourself to so learn as much about your fishing location as you can,” said Mackin. Always be encouraging and reassure your child that anyone can fish. Lessons can be beneficial and you may want to join a fishing club. As long as you are responsible, follow the rules and regulations, and have fun, fishing can be a wonderful family pastime. JL
