PUMPKIN DECORATING with kids

Providing a comprehensive curriculum for th children 18 months through 8 Grade

Get the children more involved in the fun of creating your Holloween pumpkin. A favorite Fall tradition for many families is pumpkin decorating. Here are some creative alternatives to pumpkin carving: Mosaic Pumpkin. Cut various sizes of masking tape, stick them on your pumpkin and spray paint the pumpkin black. Let the paint dry, then peel off the tape, revealing your mosaic pumpkin. Another fun variation is to spray paint the pumpkin one color, add your tape and spray paint again using a different color.

Decoupage Pumpkin. Use decorative scrapbook paper and mod podge to create your own one-ofa-kind pumpkin. Glow-in-the-Dark Pumpkin. Use glow-in-the-dark dimensional paint (Tulip) and draw a fun design that will glow at night! Note: painting your pumpkin white first will boost its glow capacity. Painted Pumpkin. Round up your acrylic paints and let the kids go to town with their own painted creations! Whether your little artist is into abstract or realist painting, it will make them feel accomplished to create their own artwork.

Always Open House

We know life is hectic, so we’re ready to help. Call Sue for your own personal “Open House” visit and see how a Montessori education will b enefit your child.

We are now accepting applications for t he 2014-‐15 school year. Spaces are available in our Primary and Lower Elementary classrooms (Preschool through 3rd Grade).

Island Pumpkin. We live in the perfect place to create island pumpkins. Here’s one way: add a bit of fish netting to the top of a pale blue, green or white pumpkins, and use a glue gun to embellish with seashells, starfish and other sea-like items. JP

“Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children” – Alex Haley

TUE, NOV 11

Grandparents’ Day is coming up on September 6, and whether your children’s grandparents are near or far, here are some ways you may honor and celebrate their relationship. Create a mini photo album. By using an online photo album service such as Shutterfly or MyPublisher, you can create mini-photo albums with your child’s scanned artwork and special photos of them with their grandparents. You can add your child’s thoughts about their grandparents to the album, as well as other quotes and memories. Grandparents’ questionnaire. Check Pinterest or TeachersPayTeachers for free downloadable questionnaires your child can fill out (with assistance if necessary) about their grandparents. It’ll be fun to hear their uninhibited answers! Send a hug. For those whose grandparents live far away, you can “send a hug”! Trace your child’s hands on construction paper or cardstock. Assist your child in cutting out the hands, as well as

Have your child write a message on the hearts and put your “hug” in the mail! A few more traditional ways to celebrate: enjoy a meal together, give them a phone call or Skype session, and make a homemade card. With all of the love grandparents have for their grandchildren, honoring them on Grandparents’ Day is a way to sprinkle some stardust into their lives. JP

Teaching your Child About being a Community Member. In a family meeting, your children get to appreciate how others feel about what they do and don’t do, and how they contribute to the family as a whole. This fosters an awareness for your children of the need to consider others’ perspectives and feelings.

• Social Skills! Help your child develop Friendship Skills

• Classes for Homeschoolers! Handwriting, Social Skills,

It is important to have some parameters for your Family Meeting.

• Speech Therapy! Improve your child’s Communication,

• It should occur at a time that is likely to be relaxing. • Make It Fun! Sit in a cozy place like a couch or fort & have snacks. • Exhale any stress you are carrying; you want to have a positive contribution.

A

parent recently told me, “I hold a family meeting once a month, whether we need it or not… it may be short or it may be long…maybe someone says an issue and sometimes we just talk.” Connecting. Our lives are so busy and family meetings may just be a way to all sit down together, talk and share pleasurable experiences.

Pro-Active Communication. Our tendency is to forget to tell household members what we appreciate about them and to focus on communicating only when things are going “wrong”. Family meetings create a positive way to talk about what each member likes and doesn’t like. When check-ins happen regularly, it fosters positive comments, constructive communication and problem solving. Modeling for your Children. Family Meetings provide a forum for exposing your children to positive ways to communicate across a range of emotions as well as problem solving, both critical areas of development. It is important for your children to see you expressing how you feel, how to be supportive and how to come up with solutions.

Affordable Therapy Classes for Young Children to Teens!

• The first 2 meetings should focus on positive comments only, what is working for each family member & what they appreciate about each other. • By your third meeting, you can start with each person, stating what is working well for them and then add what is “tricky” (avoid using words like good or bad). • You, the parent, are a Facilitator of Communication; create the opportunity for your children to express their feelings fully; you need to create a sense of safety or so they can share how they really feel. • Facilitate problem solving; empathize with each person’s feelings, hear the solutions, and choose one solution to “pilot” until the next meeting. If it isn’t working, other solutions can be explored. Avoid the temptation to dictate the solution–remember this is the chance for your children to learn to problem-solve. • It is okay when a solution doesn’t work; in fact, it is a great opportunity to problem solve again in your next meeting! • Enjoy your time together.

How to Help Your Child Become a Team Player

Christian Academy Shaping Lives to Shape the Future

“Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success” – Henry Ford Back to school often means back to sports as well! Team sports offer more than just learning techniques and plays; they also offer your child the opportunity to learn how to become a team player. Learning how to work well with others lays an invaluable foundation for your child’s work ethic and ability to get along with co-workers and employers as adults. One way you can help your child become a team player is by helping her understand each player’s role on the team and the importance of taking turns. Being a “ball hog” doesn’t allow for others to practice their skills, so by giving each team member a chance to play, each one grows in their skills and ultimately helps the entire team. Another way you can help your child become a team player is by practicing at home. Grab the basketball and have each family member take turns dribbling, throwing the ball to each other and shooting goals. You can work through any areas of selfishness at home, if your child tends to not share the ball.

Open Houses

You can even use chores as an opportunity for teaching teamwork! As your whole family tackles the chore of cleaning the kitchen together, your child can see the benefit of everyone doing their part to get the job done faster and more effectively. This activity translates beautifully to the sports field, as it takes the group as a whole to effectively play the game and score goals. Each game is a learning opportunity for your child, and whether your kid is a “ball hog” or selfless player, you can coach her through the ups and downs of playing. We’re all a work in progress, so your support through your child’s sports season will yield rich lessons that pay off now and years to come. JP

Our Keiki HOMEWORK

Homework Rituals to Ace the School Year Homework is a weekday ritual for most school children, even kindergarteners. Predictable homework routines help children succeed and minimize household friction around homework.

Schedule time for homework Set a regular time for homework that works for your child and family. If a specific time isn’t practical, set a timeframe (e.g. between 3 and 5pm), or set parameters, like completing homework before bath time. Follow a when/then approach The when/then approach provides external structure for tasks people would rather put off. Set a time for the task and make it non-negotiable. For example, “when it is 4pm, then I start homework.”

Ask, don’t tell Doing homework is your child’s job, not yours. While younger children need more assistance with homework routines, as early as possible in your child’s school career, foster responsibility by limiting your role to asking questions: • “What homework do you have?” • “When will you do it?” • “What do you need from me?” If your child asks for help, provide guidance, not answers. Ask her to read you the directions and tell you what she thinks they mean. “How could you make that happen?” or “What do you need to do first?” are questions to get her thinking about how to solve the problem.

When/then can also motivate through positive rewards: “When my homework is done, then I may play basketball until dinnertime.”

Gather information Early in the year, talk to your child, and, possibly the teacher about how homework will be assigned, how long homework should take, and whether the teacher wants parents to have any role in homework completion.

Designate a space for homework Designate a space children can regularly use for homework. For many families, the most popular place for homework is the kitchen table. If that works for your family, make it work for homework. Turn off TVs, music and cell phone alerts. Keep pencils and other supplies in a portable container.

Maintain perspective Model a balanced approach to homework by remembering: • Homework is a safe place to fail—the goal is to learn. • Household responsibilities are “the original homework;” school work shouldn’t change those. KW

Our Keiki SCHOOLWORK ASKING ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S DAY AT school What, when, why, and how? These are not questions for your child; they are cues to help parents engage their school-aged children in satisfying conversations. WHAT. Ask fairly specific questions that require an answer other than yes or no. Many things happen in a child’s day. Your questions can help your child organize and remember his day. Replace “How was your day?” with •“Who did you play with at recess?” •“Did anything funny happen at lunch?” •“What would be different if we lived in (a country he is studying)?” •“Why do you think your teacher chose that book to read in class?” WHEN. The best time to talk is when your child is ready. Some children spend the ride home detailing their day while others need alone time or a snack before saying a word. Respect your child’s needs and cues. Don’t push when he’s not in the mood to talk and don’t start conversations when she’s engaged in something else, like reading a book or preparing to call a friend. Listen for conversation openers. If your child asks a question or shares information, let that emerge into a conversation. If you respond when your child is ready to talk, she is more likely to initiate future conversations. Establish informal patterns that encourage conversations—talk on the drive to sports practice, while making dinner or cleaning up, during an

evening walk or nightly card game, or while hanging out in the kids’ rooms before bed. Create predictable opportunities for conversations and keep those opportunities open. WHY . What is your reason for asking about school? Is it to • Reconnect after a day-long separation? • Gather information about school, tasks, or responsibilities? • Check in on your child’s social and emotional well-being? • Let your child know you care about what’s happening in his life? Tailor questions to the reason you’re asking them. HOW. Engage fully with your child, listen to his verbal and nonverbal communication, and reflect back what you hear. Ask nonjudgmental questions and respond with nonjudgmental observations. Don’t glance at your phone or computer. The most valuable gift you can give your child is your undivided attention. KW

Our Keiki SCHOOLS An Interview with

Hawaii Technology Academy What is your favorite thing about being part of the HTA program on Maui and where do you see it going in the future? “My favorite thing is the possibilities of the program! We are in such an infant stage of the program and I’m excited to incorporate more service learning, internships and partnering more with community groups. I love being part of something new and supporting its growth. I love being part of a different model of school and exploring all the possibilities that come along with it.” (RM)

C

hoosing a school for your child is a tough decision for many parents. Public school? Private school? Home school? Are there any other options? Yes, in fact, here on Maui we do have another option: public charter school for K through 12th grade. Hawaii Technology Academy is one of the charter school options available to Maui children. I recently visited with Shannon Cleary, the Director of Advancement, and Ray Mohrman, the Maui Coordinator/K-8 Homeroom Teacher, to find out more about this type of education. HTA (Hawaii Technology Academy) differs from other programs in that it’s a hybrid education, meaning it combines online and face-to-face learning. It also partners educators with families, a.k.a. “learning coaches,” and students through customized educational plans that focus on student-centered education. HTA takes pride in keeping pace with global, pedagogical and technological evolution. How have you seen HTA improve a student’s education/school experience? “I have seen students who struggle in the traditional school model come to HTA and thrive because of the flexibility of the program. Students who might have been bored in traditional school have the opportunity to accelerate their program. Students who might have to take more time with their classes or who have an ‘untraditional’ schedule can tailor their program to their specific needs.” –Ray Mohrman

How often does the Maui HTA meet face-toface? Also, what type of field trips and opportunities to learn with others are available? “We meet face-to-face once a week at one of the three learning centers on Maui. This past year we did one field trip per month. We explored Iao Valley, Maui Ocean Center, Upcountry Halloween Pumpkin Farm and the Maui Tropical Plantation. We have ‘Meet and Greet’ events at beach parks at the start of each semester.” (RM)

What character traits/personality type(s) excel in a program like HTA? “HTA’s curriculum is highly rigorous. Our students are diverse and enthusiastic, and our staff is dedicated and committed. The program requires high levels of time management, self-motivation, curiosity and responsibility.” (SC) What is the enrollment process for HTA? When is the 2014-2015 application deadline? “Keeping in mind that HTA is a public charter school, it is free of tuition for all students. The enrollment process has seven steps and can be found at http://myhta.org/. The deadline for the entire application process is August 1, 2014.” (SC)

How to Nurture Your Child’s Interests

n “Bu ou ilding a Strong F

ervices LLC

da t

r Your Child” ion fo

“Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago” –Warren Buffett Nurturing your child’s interests is often like planting a tree – the seed is sown years before the tree grows into something magnificent. In this case, your child’s interests are nurtured from an early age, then blossom into full-grown talents over the years. • Listen carefully to your child to hear clues about his interests, as kids tend to focus on their favorite activities. • Expose your child to a variety of activities, such as hiking, surfing, playing music, singing, drawing, soccer, etc. See what your child is drawn to naturally, and encourage her to explore those avenues more in-depth. • Explore the library together for books, magazines and videos about your child’s interest. Teaching him how to research his favorite subject matter is an essential tool that will serve him throughout life. • Sign up for team sports or private lessons. If your child’s interest requires additional training, signing up for a local sports club or music lessons may be a fit. A budget-friendly way

to learn more about sports or an instrument would be to trade services with a friend, for example, your friend gives piano lessons and you babysit her kids in exchange. • Give your child the freedom to change. Perhaps she was passionate about ballet for a season but now she’s ready to exchange her ballet slippers for soccer cleats. Supporting your child as she grows up and allowing her to experience different opportunities for growth will give her the courage she needs to become all she was created to be on this earth. • Designate an area in your home for “free-creating.” Some items you may include are books, craft paper, crayons, markers, paint, scissors, old magazines, cardboard boxes, musical instruments, science kits, etc. This space will allow your child to tap into his creative side. Whatever your child’s interests include, you are there to guide him along the path of discovery. What a joy-filled path it is, as you become your child’s biggest cheerleader, nurturing his seed of interests each step of the way. JP

Support for Breast Feeding Your Baby You’ve heard that it’s good for you. You’ve heard that it’s good for baby. You’ve probably also heard that it saves both lives AND money. But what do you need to make the choice to breastfeed, and how can you fulfill your breastfeeding goals? In honor of World Breastfeeding Week and National Breastfeeding Month, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Hawaii (HMHB) is here to help you succeed, whether you intend to breastfeed for a month, a year, or more. All moms can benefit from finding a support network; people who understand and encourage your choice to breastfeed, and can offer helpful advice if questions come up. Many moms find that breastfeeding comes naturally and don’t run into any major problems. Others might be the first in their family to choose to breastfeed, or run into concerns that make it a challenge to continue. First things first: Don’t wait to ask for help! If you’re ever experiencing pain while breastfeeding, something needs to be fixed right away. A certified lactation consultant is your best ally, and can provide you with expert knowledge to get back on track. Find local breastfeeding support through HMHB’s online resource directory at www.hmhb-hawaii.org, or by calling the MothersCare Line: (888) 951-6661. If you are a WIC recipient, you can also access lactation support at your local WIC clinic.

Arm yourself with the knowledge and confidence that breast milk helps baby grow healthier, preventing a variety of short and long-term health risks. Finally, have confidence in yourself and your body. Making milk is entirely a supply and demand process: the more baby eats, the more milk you make. Monitor baby’s steady weight gain and check for 6+ wet and 3-4+ dirty diapers per day to ensure baby is eating enough. If so, pat yourself on the back for being able to provide all the life-sustaining nutrition your baby needs to grow. Remember: You can do it! Take it one day at a time. Baby Keiki HEALTH Free Child Development Screenings

FRAMES • GLASSES • CONTACTS • COMPREHENSIVE FAMILY VISION CARE • SAME DAY APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE • NEW PATIENTS WELCOME! • MOST INSURANCE PLANS ACCEPTED

Imua Family Services will be providing FREE child development screenings at its E Holomua Free Screening Day on September 6, 2014. The event will take places from 9:30am to 2:00pm at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center. There are many reasons why children undergo screening. Among these is the desire to know how well children are learning, if they are making progress and meeting developmental milestones, and to help identify children who may benefit from early childhood services before they enter school. Screening is not an end in itself. At its best, it is a first step toward preventing a child’s developmental problems from becoming more pronounced, or a way of confirming a particular child is reaching ageappropriate developmental milestones. Being a parent is a great and rewarding opportunity, but of course it does not come without its challenges. As a parent, you want the best for your child, but you may want confirmation that your child is growing, developing and thriving properly. Imua Family Services is proving a FREE child development screening opportunity for newborns and children all the way up to age six at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center on Saturday, September 6, 2014 from 9:30am to 2:00pm. Early Childhood Development professionals agree that it important for parents to be

proactive if they have concerns about their child’s development. Parents spend lots of time interacting and playing with their child, but often not aware if their child is meeting their developmental milestones or if their child is reacting in a manner that is similar to other children. For instance, a child may not walk as early as their same-aged peers, or they may not be able hold a crayon the same way as their typically developing peers. Imua Family Services provides a specialized team of Educators, Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists and Care Coordinators who can evaluate a child’s development and provide specialized services to help them improve their ability to thrive in the home and the community at large. If you have questions about your child’s development, visit Queen Ka’ahumanu Center for the E Holomua Free Screening Day on Saturday, September 6, 2014.

Fun Halloween Traditions Creating traditions as a family builds a foundation that binds you across the years. Here are a few Halloween Traditions you can incorporate into your family’s life: Visit a Local Pumpkin Patch. Kula Country Farms in Upcountry Maui is a wonderful spot to pick a pumpkin (or two). In addition to pumpkin picking, families can enjoy the annual scarecrow contest and the famous walk-through corn maze! Decorate a pumpkin. After you go pumpkin picking, the real fun begins: decorating them! Be sure to check out our article on Kid Friendly Pumpkin Decorating for options other than just carving. Make a D.I.Y. Costume. Help your keiki make their own costumes. Check Pinterest for many fun d.i.y. options. Often, with a little bit of creativity, you can use what you already have on hand to make a great costume! One year I made our boys “Dolphin Rescuers” by simply having them wear their board shorts and a badge reading “Dolphin Rescuer,” while carrying their toy dolphins. Perfect last-minute costume! Make a Halloween Treat. Kids love helping in the kitchen and here are some treats you can all enjoy. The first is Mini Caramel Apples: Use a melon baller to scoop out sections of the apple, put them on wax paper on a cookie sheet and push a lollipop stick through them; melt caramels, then once the caramel cools, dip the apples. Finally, enjoy! You can also make classic popcorn balls, Halloween-shaped sugar cookies and Nutterbutter Ghosts. Attend an Alternative Halloween Celebration. Local schools and churches offer Fall activities, such as “Trunk or Treat” events where cars are decorated and trunks are filled with candy and goodies. Fall Festivals are another option for those looking for alternative ways to celebrate in the community. JP

8th Annual Maui Children & Youth Day OCTOBER 11TH >> 3PM–6PM>> KENOLIO RECREATIONAL CENTER The 8th Annual Maui Children and Youth Day celebrating families with keiki from preschool through middle school is just around the corner. ASSETS SCHOOL Supports Students with Different Learning Styles By Paul Singer, Ed.D.

EXHIBITS * ENTERTAINMENT * CONTESTS * FOOD * FUN

By a conservative estimate, there are approximately 15,000-20,000 dyslexics in Hawaii’s schools each year. Unfortunately, many go without the help they need, and worse, without being fully understood by a well-meaning society. I was born dyslexic and will always be dyslexic. By first grade, I was well aware of the fact that I was unable to read as well as my peers, but I didn’t know why. As a result, I developed feelings of inferiority that haunted me for years.

maui mall

My grade school life was mediocre. In high school, my biggest obstacle was my attitude and lack of motivation. I was angry and rebellious.

It’ll be a I spent lots of time in the dean’s office, who eventually became my mentor and a friend. Fortunately, throughout school, I had several significant advocates: my mother, grandmother and my dean. Each provided exactly what I needed at important stages in my life. Their unconditional acceptance and sincere belief in me are what got me through school. I know there are parents dealing with the same anxieties my parents faced. I know that there are kids who will make the same mistakes I made along the way. Most importantly, I know that all kids are deserving of the same unconditional support I had as a child. Remediation for dyslexia is much easier if it happens during early childhood. Dealing with the psychological impact of a learning challenge is the biggest obstacle to remediation. Healing the wounds unintentionally inflicted by a society that doesn’t understand the dyslexic can take a lifetime. Unconditional support, guidance and acceptance from significant adults are the keys to nurturing confidence, resilience, and, ultimately, success. Paul Singer, Ed.D. is the Head of Assets School

Allow autonomy. Stay involved in your child’s learning, but allow as much autonomy as is appropriate for your child’s age, ability and personality. The more your child’s learning is self-directed, the more invested she will be in her learning. Provide support as needed, but follow her lead. Make it real. How are your child’s lessons relevant to her? Help her connect her passions with what she is learning. Embrace errors. Failing is a natural part of the learning process. Knowledge gained from mistakes is often more potent and more permanent than knowledge gained in other ways. Let your child know her effort, strategies, and persistence are more important than her final performance. When she gets things wrong, ask what she could have done differently and how that might change the outcome. At dinner, have family members share their “best” mistake of the week and what they learned from it. Promote a growth mindset. Teach children that their brain is like a muscle—the more they use it, the stronger it gets. Children who believe they can improve their intelligence and performance through effort and learning have greater motivation to achieve than children who believe their intelligence is fixed. Tell children that struggling with difficult material actually makes their brain smarter. Encourage them to compete with themselves by improving their speed, accuracy, comprehension, or other measurable factors over time. KW

Did you know that a forest of native plants and trees is better at collecting water than a forest of introduced plants? Because we live on an island, we have limited water resources. The East Maui Watershed Partnership offers an array of opportunities to educate youth about our precious water resources. Starting in the classroom with a presentation about what a watershed is and how it collects water, students can build their very own watershed model to experience how our land is shaped by water and how introductions of plants, animals and humans over time has changed our watershed. After students get a basic understanding of the watershed concept, field trips can be arranged for hikes into The Nature Conservancy’s Waikamoi Preserve where students can see and hear native honeycreeper birds and experience native forest vegetation first hand. Inclusive Children’s Art Program Art is one form of expression and objective communication. Art is also another way to recreate. With our Inclusive Art program it becomes an avenue for children with special needs to feel at ease in a group learning environment. One of our Art Instructors Paulo, has extensive experience working with developmental disabilities and is also a professional artist. This combination is what makes the program inclusive and skill building. Tim is our second artist that focuses on the more advanced artist, those that are seeking out a possible artist career. We have added to the mix a therapeutic art program with Jayci, this abstract view of expression is fun and exiting for our older children. The newest member to the team is Paint Your Soul with Christina. This is intuitive yoga painting offers a true experience. Benefits: Peace of mind, insights, connection, joy, a sense of freedom and positive transformation and a whole lot of fun! All art participants will have the opportunity to learn the basic art skills of drawing, painting in acrylic, water coloring, and design concepts. These are the building blocks to becoming an avid artist. In addition to having fun with color and imagination, this class focuses on diverse ways of utilizing your household items for art tools and materials. It also encourages parent participation and group work projects that will benefit the community. As you can imagine, art supplies are not free and yet this program is, so we are proud to have the continued partnership with the Children’s Community Council of Maui that donate the art supplies in order to have the quality of art materials we are using for the class in addition to Parks Department support. This program is supported by the host district staff and the Inclusion Specialist for the Department of Parks and Recreation. For more information on participation in this program please email tara.sabado@co.maui. hi.us or call 270-7979. August through September classes in Central District will be held most Monday’s and Thursday’s from 3:30-5pm and Art Yoga will be held at South District on most Fridays. seen so many local businesses who operated by those same values shut their doors. That we’re celebrating ten years is undoubtedly due to an immeasurable amount of hard work contributed by a lot of people. We do not take Maui’s patronage for granted and are very grateful to still be a strong and needed part of the community. “We’ve recognized the need to mature and morph along with the community’s expectations. Program offerings have flexed and stretched according to the gifts of the 45 talented instructors who have passed through our doors in these ten years. Kids who started in our program years ago are now VIG parents, and they get to wear that adult hat now - they get to see things from a completely different perspective. I think that as parents, they see a different level of effort than they might have been able to appreciate when they were gymnasts themselves. I guess that as much as I hate to, I have to admit that I’ve graduated from ‘uncle’ to ‘grandfather.’ Young grandfather, that is."

Favorite quote by a 3-year old gymnast: My mommy has a moustache. And she shaves it off every day.

Favorite quote by a 5-year old gymnast: My granddad can do that trick. He’s got to be at least 14.

Favorite quote by a gymnast welcoming a twangy new coach who had just moved to Maui from Texas: “Did you have to learn to speak English when you moved here?”

Ten years squished into an 8 x 5 space? Impossible.

Some interesting pronunciations of the word “gymnastics:” juh-nas-kits jim-ann-skits juh-mas-kits

Nobody knew until now because we kept it a secret: an Olympic gymnast trained in our gym while she was here on vacation. It’s true! Sorry we can’t tell who it was. One of our coaches sang with Cyndi Lauper when she gave a concert here. The VIG space sat empty for five years before VIG moved into it. Three VIG athletes were once celebrated by the County Council for “bringing honor to the County of Maui.”

Did you know that several movie stars, television stars, and rock stars have entered the VIG doors? Loudest quote yelled from a randomly passing car as coaches walked along Hana Highway while headed to Baldwin Beach: “Valley Isle Gymnastics rocks!”

The oldest person to want to celebrate his birthday with a VIG gymnastics party was turning 93. Were it not for insurance requirements, that might have been fun.

VIG coaches have been stopped in Queen Ka’ahumanu Center and Big Beach, asked to sign autographs.

When the VIG space was being prepared for initial opening date, we discovered that someone had somehow been sneaking in at night and doing gymnastics.

The October 15, 2006 earthquake that shook Maui shook VIG, too. A plug-in air freshener fell out of the outlet.

VIG opened its doors on July 6, 2004. Its very first enrolled member has the initials M.S. Do you know who that could be?

The most unusual gymnast ever at VIG was a 4-month old puppy who actually learned how to stand at the end of the vault runway, wait for the go signal, run the entire length, hit the springboard, and complete a vault.

In celebration of ten years of continuous service, you can win a ten-guest birthday party. One party valued at $200 will be awarded via random drawing for entries received no later than August 31, 2014. Click on the QR code or log on to valleyislegymnastics.com for official rules.
