Our Keiki News • Trends • Tips Halloween Party Ideas If you would like to throw your own Halloween party, here are a few kid-friendly and budgetfriendly ideas for your celebration: • Create a fun Halloween music list. Some kid-friendly ideas include “The Monster Mash,” “Thriller,” “I Put A Spell On You,” “Ghostbusters” theme song, “Love Potion Number 9,” “Flying Purple People Eater,” and “Addams Family” theme song. • Make Candy Corn Punch. Ingredients include: Fanta, orange juice and pineapple chunks. Instructions: Freeze orange juice with pineapple chunks in ice cube trays. Place frozen juice cubes in a cup. Pour cold Fanta over the top. Top with whipped cream and a candy corn piece. Serve immediately. • Play “Pin the Spider on the Web.” It’s the same concept as the classic “Pin the Tail on the Donkey.” You can print or create a web to hang on the wall. Then print out and cut an image of a spider. Adhere tacky putty to the back of the spider to make pinning easy. • Make Lollipop Ghosts. Supplies needed to make this treat include: facial tissues, round lollipops, black permanent marker, tiny hair elastics, and thin orange and black ribbon. Instructions: First you will need to use one full-size tissue, and another tissue that has been cut into quarters.
Put the quartered tissue in the center of the full sized tissue, and put the lollipop in the middle. Bunch up the tissue over the lollipop and stretch the elastic over it to hold it all in place. Use the tip of the black permanent marker to make dots for the eyes. (Note: ink bleeding may occur, so press lightly when drawing the eyes.) Tie the black and orange ribbon around the lollipop to add a bit of color. • Create a self-serve Caramel Apple Bar. Slice apples into wedges and insert a lollipop stick into one end. (Note: to prevent apples from turning brown, dip apple wedges in a carbonated drink like ginger, or simply squeeze lemon on them.) Serve with caramel dip, chocolate fondue, and various toppings. Let guests dip their apples into the caramel or chocolate; then top with chocolate chips, marshmallows, caramel bits, crumbled butterscotch pieces, coconut flakes, peanuts or other candies. JP

Organizing Tips for a Smarter School Year Shifting from the summer days of sleeping in and hanging out in the backyard, to six-hour days of school and homework, can be jarring. But with a few strategies for organization with your kids and in your household, you’ll find everyone in your house working smarter. Landing Pad “A place for everything and everything in its place,” is a smart mantra–particularly when it comes to school items. One of the most frequent causes of school day stress for your kids is not being able to find what they need when they’re getting ready in the morning. Prevent stress and keep the house neater by creating a “landing pad”–a spot where kids can stash their school gear. Then encourage them to empty and store lunch boxes, and hang up backpacks as soon as they walk in the door. Mornings will run smoother and your child will arrive at school in a ready-to-learn frame of mind. Homework Central Establishing a specific location for working on schoolwork sets your child up for success. A desk, computer nook or kitchen counter can function as a homework space. Just make sure you have
supplies such as pens, pencils, rulers and erasers nearby to prevent excuses for not getting to work. A basket of supplies can easily be pulled out for homework, and then tucked away in a cupboard after it’s done. Paper Chase Permission slips, calendars, reminders and teacher notes can accumulate at a rapid rate, especially early in the school year. Before these turn into an avalanche or you find yourself on an early morning paper chase for a form that’s due, set up a system for dealing with the influx. Fill out and return forms by the next day, whenever possible. Enter dates immediately on the calendar. File away other paperwork in a single folder, or pin it to a bulletin board. Whatever your system, keep it simple and consistent. As British-Irish statesman Edmund Burke once said, “Good order is the foundation of all things.” This includes a solid school year. LK

Helping Your Child Succeed in School
T
here is no magic formula for school success, but there are plenty of things you can do to improve your child’s performance at school. For instance: 1. Keep a consistent bedtime for your child. Being well-rested enables kids to better focus in school. 2. Serve a healthy breakfast. A protein-rich breakfast, such as eggs or cereal with milk, will give your child fuel for his body and brain. 3. Initiate regular communication with your child’s teacher. Let her know of any concerns you have, or if there are any irregular circumstances at home. Ask for her feedback on how your child is doing. 4. Read regularly with your child. Not only does reading provide a good parent/child bonding time, it also encourages development of reading skills.
5. Encourage your child to explore deeper into topics that interest her. Learning is a lifelong skill and kids need to see that they can find enjoyment in it. 6. Ask open-ended questions about what your child is studying in school. Let him teach you. Passing along skills and information is a good way for them to reinforce what they’re learning. 7. Praise growth rather than achievement. Psychologist and researcher Carol Dweck emphasizes a growth mindset that values learning for its own sake, as a better predictor of success than “talent” or IQ. 8. When working with your child on homework, guide him in strategies for completing it without doing the work for him. 9. Talk about current events as a family. Awareness of the world around, and thinking critically about what is happening, make children better learners. 10. Get involved in your child’s school when you are able. Interacting with other parents can offer insights on what happens in your child’s school day, and alert you to upcoming big deadlines. LK

Our Keiki Breakfast
Healthy Breakfast Ideas Your Kids Will Love You want your kids to eat healthy for breakfast, but it can be a challenge to find meals that are both healthy and appealing to kids at the same time. Try these recipes to meet both needs: Kid-friendly Smoothie Ingredients include: 1 cup frozen or fresh cherries, 1 cup frozen or fresh blueberries, and 1 cup of your milk of choice. Instructions: Mix all the fruit ingredients in a blender. Add milk of choice; continue blending. Serve immediately. Breakfast Quesadillas Ingredients include: 2 flour tortillas, 1 tablespoon butter, 2 hard-boiled eggs (diced), ½ cup diced ham, ½ cup grated Swiss cheese, and ½ cup grated cheddar cheese. (Optional ingredients include: sauteed mushrooms, onions or bacon.) Instructions: Melt butter in a pan over medium heat, then place one tortilla in the pan. Sprinkle grated Swiss cheese on tortilla, then layer the diced eggs and ham. Add optional toppings, then a layer of cheddar cheese. Top with remaining tortilla. As soon as the bottom tortilla is golden brown, flip the whole quesadilla over. Continue cooking until second side is golden brown. Cut into wedges and serve immediately.
Overnight Oatmeal Ingredients include: 1⁄3 cup plain Greek yogurt, ½ cup (heaping) rolled oats, 2⁄3 cup unsweetened milk of choice, 1 tbsp chia seeds or ground flaxmeal, ½ tsp vanilla extract, pinch of salt, and 0–2 tbsp honey or maple syrup. Instructions: Whisk together all ingredients in a medium-sized bowl. Pour into a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Close lid and refrigerate for at least four hours, but preferably overnight. In the morning, you can top the oatmeal with your choice of fruit, nuts or granola. Stir and enjoy! Smoothie Bowl Ingredients include: 1 cup unsweetened milk, 4 tbsp chia seeds, 1 kiwi, 1 cup plain Greek yogurt, 1 cup frozen cherries, and 1 tbsp honey. Instructions: Combine milk and chia seeds in a bowl, and let it sit for 10 minutes to create a chia pudding. Put kiwi slices on top of the pudding. Blend the frozen cherries and yogurt in a blender until smooth. Blend in the honey. Add the mixture on top of the chia pudding. Top with fresh fruit and granola. JP

Our Keiki bravery
Encouraging Bravery in Your Preschooler For three- and four-year-olds beginning to step out into the world from the safety of mom and dad’s arms, there can be much to fear— whether it be a bump in the night or walking into a new classroom. Bravery is a trait that can be developed, and as a parent there are things you can do for your child to equip him to live more courageously. According to Psychology Today, courage is “feeling fear, yet choosing to act.” Let your child know it’s okay to feel afraid. Then explain that learning bravery is about trying not to allow fear to make decisions for them. Provide security. Remind them you will be there for them – whether on the sidelines at a sport, or in a pick-up line at school. Give them extra cuddles after they have faced down fearful situations. Praise small successes. If your child is paralyzed by fear over something, break down their approach to it into smaller steps. Then praise them for each step taken. For instance, walking past a house where a dog lives, instead of
crossing the street to avoid it, is worth applauding. Then walking down the sidewalk past a dog on a leash could be a good next step. Many times kids fall prey to their fears because they don’t have a better response in their arsenal. This is where role playing can make a difference. Talk about what situations make your child afraid. Then act out a variety of responses they could take. Working through the same scenario a few times gives your child a chance to absorb better responses they can call on in the future. For more inspiration, check out the following books about courage: The Little Yellow Leaf by Carin Berger Not Afraid of Dogs by Susanna Pitzer Peep!: A Little Book About Taking a Leap by Maria Van Lieshout Sheila Rae, the Brave by Kevin Henkes The Terrible Plop by Ursula Dubosarsky

Baby Keiki News • Trends • Tips New Baby? Help a Sibling Adjust Introducing your older child(ren) to the new baby, and helping them adjust to the little one, is an important step in preparing for your family’s expansion. Below are some tips to help make this transition smooth for your older one(s): • Be consistent in your parenting style with your older child. • Set aside daily one-on-one time with your older child. Even just ten minutes of focused attention may make a remarkable difference in your older child’s behavior. • Try to involve your child in helping with the baby. Perhaps he can bring you a clean diaper or burp cloth to help him feel like he is part of the process. • Remember that toddler-aged children take their time transitioning to new activities. Dedicate an hour to prepare leaving the house with the new baby and the older child(ren). This time allotment will allow you to get everything together for the baby, as well as prepare your toddler for leaving the
house. Spills and wardrobe changes frequently happen, so give your family that extra time to accomplish tasks with grace amidst the possible chaos. • Help your older child understand the need for empathy when it comes to caring for the baby’s needs. For example, when the baby needs her diaper changed, you can tell your toddler that dirty diapers make the baby feel uncomfortable and sad. This can help your older child enter the baby’s world in a way that speaks to him. • Maintain a positive attitude. When preparing your child(ren) for the new baby, speak positively to them (as well as to yourself). Until there is an issue, assume that things will go smoothly as you transition to adding one more to your family. There is no need to stress over something that has not happened yet. Plus, talking and thinking positively about the sibling relationship will help you remain calm and peaceful. • Teach your older child a song she can sing for the baby, such as “You Are My Sunshine” or “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” This will help create a special bond between them. • When preparing for the new baby’s arrival, you can help your older child(ren) create a fun craft or art piece for the baby’s bedroom. Baby Keiki SLeep
Follow the “ABCs” to Help Babies Sleep Safely By Lisa Kimura Getting your baby to sleep well, and sleep safely, can be one of the hardest challenges new parents face. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), when a baby dies suddenly with no apparent cause, is a parent’s worst nightmare. Though it’s still considered a mysterious disease, there are several things you can do to prevent SIDS and other sleep-related deaths. More infants in Hawaii die from sleep-related causes (such as suffocation) than anything else, and the majority of deaths happen in the first six months when infants are the most vulnerable. When putting your baby to sleep, even for short naps, keep the “ABCs” of safe sleep in mind: A = “Alone.” This means that baby shouldn’t have anything else in its sleep environment, including pillows, blankets, bumper pads, toys, or even other siblings or pets. All of these items can obstruct a baby’s ability to breathe safely – remember to give them their own protected space. B = “Back.” Despite the advice you may receive from well-meaning individuals, make sure baby is always put to sleep on its back. The number of sleep-related deaths has decreased by 50% since this recommendation was made. Talk to those who care for your baby, including child care providers, family and friends, about placing your baby on its back for every sleep. C = “Crib.” Whether this is a bassinet, a Pack ‘n Play, or even a sidecar crib attached to your bed, the safest place for baby is in the same room with you, but in its own sleep area. Couches, cushions and soft surfaces aren’t safe for infants, and caregivers who are extremely tired, or under the influence of anything that causes drowsiness (such as alcohol or cold medicine), should be especially cautious about remembering to put baby to sleep separately.
Beyond the ABCs, there are many more protective measures you can incorporate to help keep your baby safe: • Breastfeeding is highly recommended to help to reduce the risk of SIDS and guard against other serious illnesses. • Avoid smoke exposure during pregnancy and after birth. Place the crib in an area that is always smoke-free. • Avoid letting the baby get too hot. Dress your baby in sleep clothing, such as a sleep sack, and do not use a blanket. • Infants should receive all recommended vaccinations. • Supervised, awake “tummy time” is recommended daily to facilitate development. • Obtain regular prenatal care to reduce the risk of SIDS even before birth. • Avoid alcohol and illicit drug use during pregnancy and after birth. If you cannot afford a crib, or have more questions about safe sleep, contact Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies’ MothersCare Line at (808) 951-6660 or visit www.hmhb-hawaii.org for resources and information. The “Hawaii Cribs for Kids” safe sleep education program provides education, plus a free Pack ‘n Play travel crib, to eligible participants. Lisa Kimura is the Executive Director for Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Hawaii. She can be reached at LisaK@hmhb-hawaii.org or (808) 737-5805.

Fall Fun on Maui Finding fall fun on Maui is not difficult. With the ideal weather conditions and warm water of the Pacific, you may enjoy the beach with your family year-round. But if you are looking for a few non-beach-related activities, choose something from this list: • Visit the Kula Country Farms Pumpkin Patch. School Year Sleep Solutions
I
f you are looking for ways to help your child perform better at school, take a look at her sleep. Researchers have found that getting adequate z’s can have measurable positive effects on focus, behavior, learning and memory —all skills that are vital to school success. (The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends nine to twelve hours per night for children ages 6 to 12, and eight to ten hours per night for teens.) Here are some ways you can help your child sleep well this school year: • When shifting from your summer schedule, ensure your child follows a consistent bedtime and wake time every day, and try not to vary it by more than one hour on weekends. His internal clock is a sensitive instrument that functions best with consistency. • Create a soothing bedtime routine that encourages her to settle down and relax after a long day of school and homework. Have her begin
preparing for bed early enough to allow for bathing and dressing, followed by a mellow activity such as reading. • Encourage your child to wrap up online schoolwork or computer-related tasks, and to put away screen devices, at least one hour before bed. The National Sleep Foundation recommends keeping televisions and computers out of children’s bedrooms. Exposure to bright light in the late evening hours can disrupt the production of melatonin, a hormone the body uses to induce drowsiness. • Ensure his bedroom windows are covered enough to make the room dark, especially early in the school year when daylight hours are longer. • Set your thermostat for cooler temps at night— around 65 degrees—to follow her natural drop in body temperature. • If outside noise is an issue around your home, such as a busy street or frequently loud neighbors, consider putting a fan or white noise machine in your child’s room to mask noise disturbances. And don’t forget your own sleep needs. A wellrested parent has more energy and bandwidth to be able to support active children, which makes for a better school year for everyone. LK

Ohana homework
Halt the Homework Hassles find what works, be consistent. When there’s a rhythm in place, kids learn to roll with it. Routine alone can smooth out problems with homework – particularly in assuring a prompt start.
H
omework can be a headache – for kids and parents. But it doesn’t have to be. It is possible to relieve the pain and frustration of getting schoolwork done. Be informed Knowing expectations can eliminate frustration. Some school districts post schoolwork guidelines online. Many teachers also explain their practices during a new school year open house. If not, don’t be afraid to ask. Discuss homework expectations with your child. Share what you and the teacher will be asking of him, and how that has changed from last year. Also ask your child what he expects. Establish a routine “Establish a time every day [for homework],” says teacher and mom Gwen Stephens. “For some kids it works best to get it done right away. Other kids need time to chill out.” Finding a homework routine takes trial and error. After school lessons and sports may require seasonal shifts in the routine. And it may not be the same for all kids in the family. But once you
Create space Workspace needs vary. Some children work best with few visual distractions. Others prefer company while working, or need to be near mom for help. Again, don’t be afraid to switch around for a while to learn your child’s preferences. Then once you’ve created a space, maintain it. It is also important to have homework supplies available. Double check what you have on hand, then store them nearby. Provide support with boundaries When it comes to completing homework, be accessible without hovering. Share observations and offer encouragement. But avoid doing the work for your child. “Some parents don’t know how to let the child do homework without interfering,” Stephens explains. “[Homework] should be something the teacher checks, not the parent. Otherwise that’s not the child’s homework any more. It’s the parent’s.” Using these tools, you can ease your child back into the routine of schoolwork at home. The results should be encouraging to everyone. LK

Bedtime Beauty Tips “Happy girls are the prettiest.” -Audrey Hepburn • Add shine and moisture to your hair by soaking it in coconut oil for at least 30 minutes. Simply rub the oil into your hair, then pull your hair up in a bun. Wash it out, and your hair will bounce back to health.
W
hile outward beauty may fade, creating a healthy bedtime beauty routine to care for yourself is about more than trying to be “pretty.” Rather, it’s a way to protect your skin, hair and face from the effects of the environment. Here are a few tips you may incorporate into your nightly routine: • Basic skin care should include removing all makeup and washing with a facial cleanser. Once your skin is free of makeup, you can add toner and then massage coconut oil onto your face. • Use lemongrass essential oil, diluted with some coconut oil or other carrier, to help tone and add glow to your skin. • Before dozing off to sleep, place used tea bags on your closed eyelids and set the timer for about ten minutes. The herbs in the tea bag will help reduce any under-eye circles or puffiness.
“Big Ink” Celebration at Hui No’eau SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8TH // TIME TBA HUI NO’EAU VISUAL ARTS CENTER
• For healthy lips, exfoliate by gently rubbing your toothbrush across them after brushing your teeth. (First rinse the toothbrush thoroughly.) Once all of the dead skin cells are removed, moisturize with coconut oil or your favorite lip moisturizer. • For soft feet, you may gently exfoliate using an olive oil and salt mixture. Simply massage the scrub onto your feet for a few minutes. Wash off, then moisturize with olive oil. Put socks on for the oil to soak in overnight, and you will wake up to moisturized feet. • Limit water intake in the evening to avoid middle-of-the-night wake-ups. But drink plenty of water throughout the day to improve your overall health and skin elasticity. • Ensure that you get the proper amount of rest to help improve your overall beauty. In the two or three hours prior to going to bed, eliminate technology usage, keep the lights dim throughout the house, and keep your bedroom cool to prepare yourself for bed. JP
On Saturday, October 8, the Hui’s 2016 Artist in Residence Program will culminate with a “Big Ink” celebration! James Bailey, Professor in the School of Art at the University of Montana, will guide teams of volunteers as they assist him in the printing process by inking woodblocks that have been carved by local artists, Hui students, and youth from local schools in the weeks leading up to the event. Everyone will be invited to gather and watch the magic unfold as James prints the woodcuts on cloth or paper by driving over them with a steamroller. Stay tuned for details coming soon to huinoeau.com! Learn more about James Bailey at jamesbaileyart.com. Mahalo to the Laila Twigg-Smith Art Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation for their generous support of this program! Stay tuned for more information on this exciting program!

Successful Language Learning & Effective Communication BY EMMANuELLE BETHAM
O
ur perception of a situation dictates how well we will perform in it. So, at Maui Language and Communication Development, we work on perception first. For anyone to communicate successfully, we first need to consider how they personally feel about using language in a given situation, whether it’s in the classroom, in a homework piece, at work or in front of an audience. Language is self-expression, verbal and nonverbal. The same barriers to successful communication can be met by a child learning to read and write; someone wishing they could more comfortably speak up in social situations, presentations, meetings or other work settings; a non-native speaker gaining confidence in English, or an actor or dancer practicing stage performance. In order to do the task successfully, it is important that the performer can access his/her own freedom of expression. A “robot” type reader may, at best, execute the exercise, but will not benefit from it. A certain level of identification and personal involvement is necessary to fully comprehend content, open up the critical mind and give way to creativity. However, this is not always a straightforward action and it can require that the individual overcome selfimposed limitations.
This is where building self-confidence and creativity come in. Carefully consider the individual’s goal (the language or communicative activity required) and tools and strategies to achieve it, but most importantly, focus on resolving limiting inner-conflicts (that you or your child may not even be aware of, and yet come in the way of what you need to do). Once limitations are dropped, you or your child can then thrive in all communicative endeavours and can apply the new awareness in everything you or your child do in life.
Emmanuelle Betham is an Educator and Coach who specializes in Language and Communication. For more information contact Maui Language & Communication Development at (808) 740-3021 or mauilanguagecommunication@gmail.com.

When to Give Up & When to Stick it Out After begging to learn trumpet, your son takes three lessons and decides he is done. Your daughter suddenly wants to drop out of swimming, even though she’s one of the best on the team. It can be difficult to know when to push your child to stay with an activity and when to let him or her give it up. While there are rarely cut-and-dried answers to the question, “should they stay or should they go,” we’ve rounded up some considerations to help you weigh your approach with your child. When to Give up: • When you realize that your child is not ready for the experience. Perhaps he isn’t developmentally prepared for the physical aspects. Or she can’t emotionally handle the competitive nature of a group. Taking a breather until they’ve grown or matured may help not only their success with the activity, but also their enjoyment of it. • When your child has already “quit.” If your child has already disengaged from an activity, you have little to gain from forcing him to keep showing up.
• When the environment is toxic. If your child faces a nasty coach or bullying peers, and you have done what you can to confront the problem, then it’s time to make a hasty exit. Childhood is too short for your child to be made to feel bad about herself during an extracurricular activity. When to Stick it Out: • When the end is near. If your child decides she wants out with only a few days or competitions left, push back. Remind her of how much she has already invested in the activity, compared to how little remains to be done. • When the activity has only just begun. The unfamiliar can be daunting. And kids can be prone to snap judgments. If your child asks to quit during the first few days or events, suggest he give it a little more time. • When your child has a habit of quitting. If you see a pattern developing, you may want to hold your ground to help her learn commitment. LK Carden Academy of Maui, with Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band, are excited to announce a monthly Family Pau Hana event, free and open to the Maui community. The first Wednesday of each month, you and your keiki will sing, dance, and play, or sit back and relax with friends at this one-of-akind evening out for the whole family. Laws that Help Grandfamilies By HEATHER GREENWOOD-Junkermeier Grandfamilies are families in which the grandparents, great-grandparents, aunties, uncles, or other family members fill the role of parent. One challenge that many local grandfamilies face is that although they have sole responsibility for the children, they often do not have legal guardianship. This can make it difficult for the grandparents to advocate for the children. But the two Hawai’i laws explained below help these families at school and at the doctor’s office. Hawaii Revised Statutes §302A-482, Full Participation in School Act This Act allows grandparents or other caregivers with whom the student lives to complete and submit an affidavit indicating the child’s status. Caregivers then have the authority to enroll the child in school and consent to school activities. All Department of Education offices have copies of the affidavit forms as well as instructions for completing the form. If the office staff is unfamiliar with the forms, ask to speak with the principal or school administrative services assistant (SASA).
Hawaii Revised Statutes §557-28, Caregiver Consent for Minor’s Health Care In 2005, HRS §577-28 made it possible for grandparents to authorize medical and dental care under certain situations. If grandparents or other caregivers have sole responsibility of the child who resides with them, the grandparent would qualify to authorize medical care. Once grandparents have the forms, they need to: 1. Complete the forms, but wait to sign until meeting with a notary. 2. Notarize the forms and make a copy for your files. 3. Bring the completed Affidavit forms back to the school or to the doctor’s office. Legal Aid Society of Hawaii has both the forms and instructions. To obtain the affidavit forms or for other guardianship questions, contact the Legal Aid Office: • Maui: (808) 244-3731, ext. 1231 • Lana’i: (808) 565-6089 • Moloka’i: (808) 553-3251
