Our Keiki News • TreNds • Tips Pumpkin Decorating “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald Drinking pumpkin-spiced lattes, enjoying cool breezes in the air, and taking a trip to the pumpkin fields all bring that cozy feeling of autumn. Along with these experiences that are special to the fall season, you can create unique pumpkins with your keiki to place on the lanai (porch) or indoors as centerpieces. Here are a few decorative pumpkin ideas for your home this fall season. Glittered Pumpkins Materials Needed: pumpkins, colored glitter, spoon, spray adhesive, roll of craft paper, newspaper Instructions: Protect your work surface by laying craft paper over the newspaper. Spray the top and middle portion of a pumpkin with spray adhesive. While the glue is still wet, use a spoon to sprinkle glitter over the sticky surface of the pumpkin. Allow to dry. Pick up the pumpkin and shake off any glitter that didn’t fully adhere. Set the pumpkin aside and fold the craft paper to pour the extra glitter back into its original container. Succulent Garden Pumpkins Materials Needed: pumpkins, spray adhesive, glue gun, glue sticks, moss, various succulent cuttings, craft paper, newspaper Instructions: Protect your work surface, per the above instructions, and work in a well-ventilated area. Spray the moss in small sections with an even layer of spray adhesive. Quickly put sprayed moss on top of the pumpkin. Press down firmly to adhere the moss. Next, using your glue gun, glue the ends of the succulent cuttings into the moss. Hold each piece on the pumpkin for several seconds to ensure proper adherence. To maintain your succulent arrangement, mist daily after the initial 24-hour period. The arrangements may last up to two months. Then you may care-

fully cut off the top of the pumpkin and plant the succulent arrangement into an appropriately sized planter or in your garden. Designer Thumb Tack Pumpkins Materials Needed: pumpkins, silver or gold thumb tacks Instructions: Decide on a design such as a flower, chevron, ocean wave, monogram, etc. Using a pencil, draw the design on the pumpkin. Then push in the thumb tacks with a small hammer or with your hand, depending on the difficulty. These pumpkins are guaranteed to add character to your home. JP

Family Fun on Halloween Eating caramel apples, trick-or-treating, and dressing up in costumes are fun ways to celebrate Halloween as a family. Why not add a few more traditions to your spooky holiday? Here are a few ideas. • Pick pumpkins at Kula Country Farms on Maui. • Make pumpkin pancakes and eat them the morning of Halloween. • Play the “You’ve Been Booed” game with other families in your neighborhood. Leave a bag of treats on your neighbor’s doorstep with a “You’ve Been Booed” sign that includes instructions to enjoy their treats and to continue the fun by “booing” two other families in the neighborhood. • Enjoy a local “Trunk-or-Treat” celebration at a church or school. • Watch It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown together as a family. • Dress up as a theme. For example, each family member can be a s’mores ingredient (parents as graham crackers, child(ren) as marshmallows and

chocolate bars). Or, dress up as movie characters from The Incredibles, or as members of The Flintstones family. • Decorate pumpkins together. (Find inspiration on page 8.) • Go stargazing together. • Make caramel popcorn balls. JP

Don’t Panic!

Advice for Dealing with Anxiety BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.

• Reduce the pace of your day. If your child or family is overscheduled, reduce your daily/weekly scheduled activities.

A

nxiety is often used as a general term to indicate worry. It is a normal part of development and can even be beneficial. Some of us are vulnerable to more persistent anxiety that may span many contexts and impact daily activities. According to the Children’s Mental Health Report from Child Mind Institute, 31.9% of adolescents between 13 and 18 years of age have identified anxiety. Anxiety can often be passed on through the family, or may be specific to the child or adult. Anxiety can also be part of a larger picture; for example, anxiety often goes hand-in-hand with a child who is sensory sensitive. A child may experience social difficulties and may have persistent worries related to coping with his social world. Finally, there may be life experiences that contribute to feelings of worry. The earlier children can learn tools to manage their worries, the better. Anxiety often feels like worries that can escalate and become overwhelming and even paralyzing for the child, no matter how illogical it seems. It moves the child from a calm state to a heightened state of arousal, physiologically; and so she may feel physiologic changes such as a fast heart rate, increase in breathing, rapid thoughts, inability to act, avoidance, resistance, crying, etc. It can look different for every child, and may look different in different situations. The goal is for your child to have tools to be able to self-regulate. Here are some tips: • Teach your child how to breathe. Make a game of it with multiple deep breaths. This is the fastest way for your child to calm his body, physiologically.

• Make sure your child does at least one physical activity each day (swimming, biking, riding a scooter, or going to the beach or park). This helps ‘discharge’ all the worries that build up for her throughout the day. • Make sure your child has ‘quiet time’ at least 3 times per day. He needs practice in calming. Turn the lights down, create a cozy space, and choose activities that are pleasurable and calming. Some families make a quiet time for the whole family! • Create time for you and your child to talk daily. Discuss something that went well and something that was ‘tricky’ for each of you. This creates a platform for discussion without emphasis on the child’s ‘worries.’ • Avoid pushing your child to do/try things. Go slow. Start with watching, and gradually participate as your child feels comfortable. Your child is more likely to try new things if she feels she has control. If your child has anxiety, it is a good idea to work with a pediatric counselor/therapist/psychologist who has a plethora of ‘tools’ to teach your child how to manage his or her worries. The nature of anxiety is varied. A professional can tease out what will be the best support for your child, and also help you support your child at her developmental level. The younger your child is when she acquires these ‘tools’ to manage her worries, the better equipped she will be to self-regulate and be happy.

Ways to Teach Your Child to Enjoy School School day dread can be a tough issue to face with your child. You want them to look forward to the place where they spend the most time. But not every child embraces education with glee. Here are some tips for helping them learn to better appreciate school: Set an upbeat tone for the day before they leave the house. If getting out the door to school is a chore because your child is tired, try moving bedtime back by a half hour. As adults, we know how hard it can be to drag ourselves out of bed early. The same is true for kids. Accentuate the positive. After school, review with your child what they liked about their day. It’s okay if they say “lunch” or “recess.” Use your investigative skills to learn what makes that appealing to them. Then point out other occasions during the school day when they can enjoy those aspects. If they enjoy time with friends, help them recognize interactions they have within the classroom. Respect your child’s learning style. Parent/ teacher conference time can be a great opportunity for discussing your child’s learning style with

his teacher. Ask which aspects of the school day play to this style. Then help your child recognize his learning style, while appreciating how others may learn and how school is structured towards all approaches. School can be a downer for kids who don’t see success in the traditional sense – i.e., high scores on tests and homework. But as Carol Dweck points out in her book Mindset, it’s better to focus on process and growth instead of outcomes. With growth in mind, help your child set school-oriented goals. Ask your child, “what do you hope you can do at the end of the school year that you can’t do now?” If one part of their day is more discouraging than another, consider focusing the growth goal in that area. Then revisit those goals periodically. Focus on growing your child into a lifelong learner. In the process, they might see school in a different light. LK

How to Make Up a Bedtime Story with Your Child Make story-time fun for yourself and your child by creating a story that’s exciting and new. • Start a story one night, and continue adding to it every night after that. You can switch off whose turn it is to continue the story.

S

tories at bedtime make for a great bonding ritual. Chances are you have some favorite books you and your child like to read. But have you ever thought of making up your own story together? This is a wonderful exercise that encourages creativity. It can also help offer new perspective on real problems, and give you a glimpse of your child’s hopes and dreams. Here are a few hints for bedtime storytelling: • Let your child determine the setting and the beginning of the plot line. Then you weave a story for them. As you go along, continue asking for additional elements – obstacles to be overcome, helpers to join the protagonist. • Start the story yourself by introducing the conflict/ problem, and ask your child to tell the ending (which, of course, will be a happy one). • Create a story where your child is the hero/heroine. You be the narrator, and allow your child to tell the hero’s actions in first person. (Watch the classic storytelling movie The Princess Bride for ideas on how to flow in and out from narrator to first person.)

• One idea for a story is to problem solve an issue from your child’s day using a fictional character who experiences the same problem. Make the outcome as fantastical as you like (magical wizards, superpowers, etc.). Suggested story starters: • “Once upon a time in the kingdom of [your town], there lived a young prince/princess named [your child’s name]. The land was a happy one that lacked nothing except …” • “If [your child’s name] knew one thing, it was this…” • “It was [protagonist]’s birthday and the last thing he/she expected was…” Or, use one of these classic first lines from children’s books to start your story: • “All children, except one, grow up.” - Peter Pan • “‘Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,’ grumbled [name], lying on the rug.” - Little Women • “It was [name] who first told me about them.” - The Borrowers Creating your own story together will make bedtime more fun for both of you. LK

Makawao Drop-in Center The Makawao Drop-in Center opened last fall in a brand new classroom tucked away under avocado and lychee trees in the heart of Makawao. Owner Angela Dusenberry wanted to create a unique business targeted to families of children ages 2–5 looking for a preschool environment, but not in need of full-day childcare. The idea has been well received, ending the school year with two full classes, each meeting for 2.5 hours two days per week, for an affordable $250/month. Diana Larose, a parent of one of the students, says she “loves that every day is set up for a new adventure.” Classes include free play; circle time; music; texture table play; art; letter, number and shape games; dance; bubbles; snack time; and outside play in their jungle paradise complete with a tree fort. Robyn Sarno, another parent, says, “We love Makawao Drop-in Center! Twice a week my daughter races me to the door.” For details, visit makawaokids.vpweb.com or www.facebook.com/ makawaodropincenter, or call 446-6928.

Motivating an Underachiever Help motivate your child to improve and gain confindence in their abilities. Christine K’s son, Nathan, is a bright student. He’s smart enough to calculate the minimum score he needs on his final exams to land a decent grade, instead of investing that effort in achieving an A. If that sounds like your child, or if your child simply lets schoolwork slide, here are some ways to motivate him to live up to his potential. Break It Down Encourage your child to break complex projects into sub-tasks. Lack of effort can be a sign that she is simply overwhelmed and doesn’t know where to start. Helping her to see a large assignment as a series of small steps can provide her with a sense of control. Make the first step an easy one. A quick success can give your child the confidence to keep moving forward. Growth Over Grades Sometimes a child’s lack of motivation springs from a belief that he doesn’t have the ability to perform better. So he stops trying. Instead, help him focus on growth, not grades. With each new unit in class, ask what skills he hopes to gain from it. Praise his effort and point out the progress you see him making. According to the digest of the Duke University Talent Identification Program, “Students who believe that their abilities are not innate but have been developed are more likely to attempt challenging tasks.” Remind your child of the abilities he has already developed, as encouragement to keep developing.

Find Their Rhythm Assess your child’s energy rhythms. Does she arrive home worn out and in need of a break before tackling homework? Or does she start strong and peter out as the evening progresses? As energy drops, often so does motivation. Challenge your child to tackle her least favorite or most difficult subjects during her period of highest energy. The same paradigm can be applied to school schedules. Some high schools place a student’s most difficult class right after physical education, when her mind will be stimulated to work. Most importantly, stick with your child. Model persistence by not giving up on him or her. LK

Fire Prevention Week FIrSt WeeK OF OCtOBer The theme for fire prevention week 2015 is: “Hear the beep where you sleep. Every bedroom needs a smoke alarm!” This theme reminds everyone that smoke alarms are our first line of defense when it comes to fires in the home. Batteries need to be changed annually and the smoke alarms need to be tested monthly. Furthermore, every home should have a home evacuation plan identifying two ways out of every room. Of equal importance in this plan is the designated meeting place where accountability of every individual in the home can be done. Families need to practice their evacuation plan so that everyone understands what needs to be done in case of a fire emergency within the home. Keep a lookout for Maui Fire Department’s once-a-year demonstration. Smokey the Bear and Sparky the Dog will also be on hand to cheer everyone on. Bring swimsuits and towels for the post-demonstration hose shower! Contact Fire Prevention at 244-9161 for more information.

PLAY FOR THE BRAIN BY mAKA’ALA pALmOrE HALEAKALA WALdOrf scHOOL

P

roper brain development in early childhood is critical, and current research is shining a light on how best to support children during this stage of development. The human brain is not a finished organ at birth — in fact, another 10 or 12 years are needed before even a general development is completed. Myelination is a process that thickens the insulation around the connecting fibers and pathways of the brain required for the successful development of cognitive, motor, and sensory functions. The most recent brain research clarifies that in order for a young child’s brain to go through this myelination process, the body must be engaged in healthy movement. Children engaged in large blocks of movement and play time have opportunities for this myelination to occur. Play is a profound practice for young children, engaging the foundational senses of touch, life, balance, and movement. A simple, warm environment with toys that inspire imagination and problem solving play with others may appear

“non-academic”, but the young child is actually being given that which is vital for healthy brain development. A balance of low stimulation -- visually and intellectually -- on the one hand, and high sensorial opportunities with movement and engagement with the socio/cultural needs of children on the other, is optimal. Rhythm in the day, with a rich tapestry of nutritious foods, an array of fine and gross motor movement and artistic activities, also support the child with experiences primed for brain and body development. The sweetness of a gentle approach to the child’s day nurtures the child to blossom innately and naturally with optimal development of body, mind and soul. Play, nutrition, movement, and thoughtful engagement at these early developmental stages prepares the child for a life-long journey of success in life and learning. The 7 Essentials for Young Children: • Warmth • Breath • Nutrition • Rhythm • Sleep • Harmonious, non-competitive movement • Unconditional LOVE!

“Don’t Leave Me!” Ways to Make Drop Off Easier Separation can be difficult. use these tips to help your child overcome their fears.

A

s a toddler, my daughter had issues with separation anxiety. The minute she realized we were headed for the church nursery, she would wrap her pudgy arms tightly around my neck and push her face into my shoulder. The nursery volunteers would have to peel her – shrieking and squirming – from my torso. But then, without fail, once I disappeared from sight she would turn off the tears and play happily. Putting your child in someone else’s care – without the tears (theirs, not yours) – for even a short time can be tough. Minimize the emotion for both of you by trying one of these mom-tested tips:

• Practice shorter times apart, such as having a neighbor stop by to watch your child while you run to the store. These departures with a quick return provide reassurance that you will be back. • If you’re dropping your child off at a new place or somewhere they regularly resist, send along a familiar object from home for comfort. Let them pick a favorite toy to play with, or a stuffed animal or blankie to cuddle. • Do you know the phrase, “out of sight, out of mind”? Don’t linger when leaving your child. You might be expecting to watch him settle, but if your child senses you are still near, he may continue putting up a fuss. • Day care workers, nursery volunteers and teachers are all prepared to provide friendly interactions that distract children from their sadness. But sometimes a friend can make the difference between distress and delight at drop off. Ask the mom of a classmate if you can arrange a play date – at your house or a favorite playground. Then plan to meet up again outside the door for drop off. Give the pair a chance to reacquaint themselves before sending them together into their class. If your child continues to protest about being left, consider taking a break from that setting. Given just a few months of maturity, you might find a whole new scenario when you go to leave him next. Baby Keiki News • TreNds • Tips Talking Points From My Speech Language Pathologist to Yours BY AsHLEy juNG, m.s. ccc-sLp When will my child begin to talk and what should I expect from my toddlers learning language? This is a common question parents ask when their child is not using words to communicate. Here’s my rule of thumb: He should say his first word at the age of one year (12 months). At age two, he should be combining two words together (saying 50 to 200 words). At age three, he should be using at least three to five-word phrases. (Note: There is a range for development, but these are general milestones for expressive language development.) If you think your child “should talk more,” discuss your concerns with your doctor, and/or refer to an agency like Imua Family Services and request that your child obtain a speech and language evaluation. In the meantime, here are five strategies you can implement in the home environment to encourage and facilitate your child’s speech and language development. Parallel Talk: Describe everything your child sees, does and touches. Give a running commentary about your child’s actions. He will have more opportunities to imitate when you model rich language.

Provide Choices: Give your child a choice between two objects to encourage him to use a word to get what he wants (e.g., “Do you want milk or juice?”). Labeling/Withholding: When your child points to something he wants, hold the item near your mouth and label the object. Encourage him to imitate the target word or beginning sound of the item before he receives the desired object. Repetition and Expansion: Repeat and expand on what your child says. If he says, “Mommy!”, then you say, “Mommy look!” Praise: Praise your child when he produces a sound or word, and explain why you are proud of him (e.g., “You’re good at saying ‘up’ when you want me to carry you!”).

The Bonds of Attachment Begin Early Learning to take care of yourself will give you the presence of mind to develop the baby bond. BY LIsA KImurA make sure you’re taking care of yourself so that you can care for your little one! Rely on Dad, friends or grandparents for support; ask for help when you need it; and remember to rest, so you can recharge. When you are relaxed, baby is relaxed, and the bonds of secure attachment can grow.

S

hopping for maternity clothes. Decorating the nursery. Sending out the birth announcements. Detailing all the “firsts” in the baby book… All of this (and more!) come with news of the arrival of a baby, sending many of us into a frenzy of activity. But with all the excitement of a new baby, it’s important to take care of yourself in order to take care of baby. Building the bonds of attachment help build a strong foundation for baby’s healthy brain, emotional and physical development. So, how do you help make sure you’re creating a secure environment? Before you’ve even met your baby, the bonding begins. Take every opportunity during pregnancy to lovingly rub your belly and sing to your baby. Visualize the type of parent you want to become, and talk to your baby about it. Your baby is learning who you are before you’ve even met, and you’re setting the stage for a rewarding parenting experience. Once baby is born, the real work begins. And while they are snuggly little bundles of unimaginable joy, it’s easy to become exhausted or overwhelmed by the demands of newborn care. This is the time to

Never underestimate the power of touch. By wearing your baby in an infant carrier, your baby gets an intimate view of your world, with the security of knowing mom (or dad) is close by. Massage is also a powerful way to soothe your baby and to learn their likes and preferences. Start with firm but gentle strokes down baby’s arms and legs, along with clockwise circles on the belly. Many babies are calmed by the motion, and it’s a wonderful way to connect. Finally, whether baby is crying nonstop or you’re simply feeling worn out, remember to breathe. It sounds simple, but deep, cleansing breaths have a way of lifting stress from your body and allowing you to think clearly. When you’re relaxed, you’re able to attune to your child’s needs, and that’s what secure attachment and bonding is all about.

Tips For Helping Your Child Give Up Thumb Sucking use these loving ideas to help your child stop sucking their thumb. As a sleep-deprived parent of an infant, you might have been thankful when your baby found his thumb and learned to soothe himself. But now that he’s older, you’re finding it a frustratingly stubborn habit. Never fear. We’ve gathered four ideas from moms who have convinced their child to drop it. • At the outset of training your child to stop sucking his thumb, set boundaries for him. You could instruct your child that he is not allowed to suck his thumb outside of his bedroom. As long as you enforce the boundaries, your child’s desire to be with others will motivate him to isolate the behavior to naptime and bedtime. • It’s tempting to point out every time you spot your child’s thumb in her mouth. But in addition to coming across as nagging, your reminders may cause humiliation for your child when she is in public. Help her out by creating a subtle signal you can use to remind her when she drifts into thumb sucking. • Devices that cover the thumb and attach around the wrist can be strong deterrents to sucking. Made of lycra or flexible plastic, they’re best worn only during problem times such as bedtime or while watching TV. • Discuss with your child how dropping the habit is part of getting bigger. Choose together a reward for when your child has stopped, like a “big kid” outing

or toy. Decide ahead of time what constitutes success, such as one week without sucking. Encourage your child to keep that goal in mind whenever she is tempted to pop her thumb in her mouth. One final note: I once heard the remark, “nobody walks up to receive their diploma sucking their thumb.” Your child will give it up; the habit may just take longer to break than you hope. LK

The Importance of Family Time “Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.” -Michael J. Fox

C

reating a welcoming home that provides shelter from the outside world is a gift we can give to our family with intentionality and care. Family time is important because we cannot buy back these years with our children and spouse. When we take the steps necessary to protect our family and spend quality time together, we are building a strong foundation from which our children may soar. One way to create family time each day is by sharing the evening meal together. Studies have shown that children who eat dinner sitting at the table with their

parents tend to do better in school and in life. The dinner table is where we can reconnect after a busy or tiring day, share the special things that happened throughout the day, and make memories of favorite meals to eat together. Another way to spend time together as a family is by finding an activity to enjoy and to schedule a regular outing together – whether it’s hiking, surfing, visiting museums, going to concerts or finding new places to explore. Playing board games together, enjoying movie nights at home, and taking family vacations (or staycations) also provide ways to connect. Working, volunteering and spending time with friends are all important, but family time is the most important as it is the basis for all of life. The foundation you create will impact what future generations will do in their family’s lives, and will leave a wealth of memories stored up for your relationship to continue growing for years to come. The Art of “Me Time” “rest and self-care are so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. you cannot serve from an empty vessel.” - eleanor Brownn

A

s parents, the demands of parenting, working, volunteering, etc. can weigh us down. Often times we put ourselves at the bottom of the list when, in reality, taking care of ourselves first would actually allow us to serve our loved ones with even greater energy and focus. Making space in our busy schedules each day for “me time” is worth it, even if only for ten minutes. Here are some ways you can squeeze in time to refresh yourself: 1. Wake up before everyone else in the house. Enjoy your cup of coffee in the quiet of the morning while reading inspirational books, journaling your thoughts, or simply watching the sunrise. 2. Refrain from picking up the phone to check social media during your waiting times at the bank, doctor’s office, or after school pick-up. Instead, keep a book or small notepad with you,

and take those moments to enjoy reading your favorite author, doodle drawings, or brainstorm items for your bucket list. 3. After the kids are in bed, take an epsom salt bath, and add an essential oil such as lavender to the tub for an at-home spa experience. If you don’t have time to soak in the tub, fill a small wash tub with epsom salt and hot water to soak your feet in while you watch television or scroll Instagram at night. 4. Grab your tennis shoes and hit the road. Taking a walk around the block or a hike through the woods will renew your senses and re-energize you. 5. Go to the beach and watch the windsurfers, turtles or waves. Soak it in and get your Vitamin D while you’re at it. 6. Meet your friends at a local waterfall, coffee shop or the movies. Time with friends will allow you to just be you, and not “mom” or “dad.” 7. Plan a trip to the local farmers market. Taking your time to choose fresh veggies or fruits alone is a fun way to get some “me time” (and involves less begging as well). JP

On-the-Go Breakfast Ideas Simple and complete ideas to keep your child fueled up to start the day right.

G

etting out the door in the morning can be simplified with these on-the-go breakfast ideas!

Smoothies: Make your own freezer smoothie packs ahead of time by chopping and combining your favorite fruits and/or veggies, and storing them in freezer bags. In the morning, simply add your choice of liquid to the blender (milk, water, coconut water, yogurt, etc.), then put the pre-made frozen smoothie contents into the blender. Blend. Voila!

DIY Freezer Pancakes: Make pancakes, and allow them to cool completely on a cooling rack. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lay the pancakes on the parchment paper without letting their edges touch. After the sheet is filled, add another sheet of parchment paper and fill another layer of pancakes. Repeat. Place the baking sheet with pancakes in the freezer, and freeze until the pancakes are firm. Remove the baking sheet from the freezer and place the pancakes in a freezer bag. Write the date on the bag. Store them in the freezer and use within two months. To reheat, simply remove a few pancakes from the freezer bag and microwave them for approximately one minute. Make Ahead Breakfast Burritos: Cook eggs and bacon. Place them in tortillas along with cheese, sautéed bell peppers, onions and refried beans. Simply roll up the tortilla with the ingredients into a burrito. Wrap each burrito in parchment paper, then store them in a gallon-size freezer bag. To reheat, place the burrito in the microwave for approximately one minute and twenty seconds. JP

Organization Tips for Busy Families Looking for ways to keep your family organized? Then check out these tips: De-clutter and downsize. By going through your family’s belongings and keeping only what you truly love and/or use, you will save valuable time getting ready, keeping the house clean, and knowing where your items belong. Ask everyone to pick up after themselves every day—books back on shelves, hair products back in the drawer, dishes washed and put away in the cabinet. With each person doing his or her part, the house will be easier to keep organized and you can get out the door more quickly. Make a capsule wardrobe. By simplifying your and your children’s clothing choices, you save time and money. Be creative with accessories, but stick to the basics for your everyday look. Search Pinterest for capsule wardrobe inspiration.

Do once-a-week food preparation. Pick a day to organize snacks, salads, etc. in to-go containers in the fridge. When it comes time to make lunch, simply toss what you need in your bag. Create a weekly menu plan. Then prepare for dinner the night before by defrosting the meat you may need and setting aside the rest of your menu items. Using a Crock-Pot in the morning is helpful as well. Then when everyone comes home, dinner is ready and the take-out line is avoided. By employing a few of these ideas, your family will be on its way to a more organized and efficient way of living!

Managing the After School Busy-ness Homework. Mealtime. Sports practices and music lessons. The time between the end-of-school bell and when your head hits the pillow for the night can be chaotic and stressful. But with a bit of planning, you can make the afternoon and evening go more smoothly. Prepare Thinking ahead early in the day yields benefits come afternoon. Before school, gather (or have your children gather) sports equipment, instruments and other supplies they need for after-school activities. Lay out any clothes they will need to change into. You can even load up the car with any items that will be traveling with you to activities. Create Re-entry Space Facilitate post-school re-entry at home by creating spaces for unloading school items such as papers, backpacks and lunchboxes. Instruct your children to take care of these as soon as they walk in the door. This will diminish the feeling of chaos and prevent losing or forgetting permission slips and other school documents. Reset by Resting Factor in some down time – for your kids and for yourself. Cuddle on the couch, chat at the counter over snacks, or zone out in bed to your

favorite music. Even 10 minutes of doing nothing can help reduce feelings of being harried. Refuel Keep quick and healthy snacks on hand – baby carrots, apples, trail mix or string cheese. The easier to grab on-the-go, the better. For the extra busy days, stash beef jerky, snack bars, rice cakes or other non-perishable goodies in your car’s glove box. You’ll all feel better when you’re not running on empty. Team Up Having multiple kids in different activities can add complexity to the after-school schedule. When possible, enlist other moms and dads to be part of a carpool. Divvying up driving duties may take some coordinating to start, but it’s worth it to maintain your sanity in the long run. When it comes down to it, we all have busy days for a reason – there is so much we want our kids to experience. But nothing replaces the experience of having a parent who is there for them. LK

Ohana dyslexia

Outsmarting Dyslexia BY TANI TOprAKcI, m.Ed “dyslexic tendencies are the root cause to most learning difficulties beyond reading.”

What most people don’t know is that dyslexia is a unique way of thinking. It is creative, threedimensional and fun, and deeply engrained in the right hemisphere of the brain. Research has shown that dyslexic tendencies are the root cause to most learning difficulties beyond reading – including ADD, ADHD, behavioral problems, and problems with math, spelling, handwriting and even clumsiness. Dyslexics create meaning – by adding to their mental picture – one word at a time as they listen to or read a sentence. They don’t think in sounds, so words that don’t easily lend to pictures produce mental “blanks.” Problems lie in any confusion around a word or concept. Dyslexics struggle most often with 217 common trigger words and the alphabet itself. The clay-based Symbol Mastery Program is designed to help eradicate these problems. Below is a step-by-step activity from this program. Be sure to work at a pace that the student can handle without getting frustrated. This may mean working on only one letter or one word a day! Take your time and have fun, but don’t do the work for them. 1. Use clay to create both the uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet uniformly. Make sure the students know the names and the order they go in. Ask students to point and say the names aloud. Save until complete. 2. Pick one word to work on. Write the word on an index card. Look up the meaning in an age-appropriate dictionary. 3. Discuss the meaning. Add the definition to the back of the index card.

4. Ask students to create a 3D model that represents the word to them. Discuss. 5. Use the clay letters to “write” the word uniformly. Say the word aloud with its meaning. 6. Create an arrow linking the word to the model. 7. Ask students to repeat the word and meaning, first pointing to the model and then to the word. 8. Take a mental picture and play games! Have the student repeat the meaning and spelling with eyes closed. Ask the student to spell the word both forwards and backwards, and to find letters in front, behind or between letters. Remember to end with having the student spell the word correctly! 9. Take a picture and create a collage of all mastered words.

Fall Fun With HouseMart Just like you, HouseMart strongly believes in family, community and education. HouseMart is the parent brand of six Ben Franklin Crafts stores in Hawai`i and 24 Ace Hardware stores in Hawai`i, Washington, Oregon and Nevada, originating in Kahului, Maui. No matter how big the company has become, they’ve never forgotten what’s important. They offer popular keiki craft classes, which are held every spring, summer and fall breaks. This fall they will be held at Ben Franklin Crafts from October 5 through 9. Keiki have the option to take each class separately, or attend all five classes. Stay tuned for more information. They also believe in educating our youth, both in schools and in the community, which is why they support STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) and work with groups like the Hawai`i State Science Olympiad, Hawai`i State Public Libraries and the Maui Economic Development Board. One way your keiki can learn about STEAM is through Hardware Science! It’s a cool way for kids to conduct science experiments using materials that can be found at their local hardware store or even around the house. Visit hardwarescience.com for more information. For art, HouseMart sponsors a wide range of community events and projects, most recently Maui Matsuri’s Manga Art and Traditional Art contests. They carry supplies for school projects, whether it’s a science or art project, or presentation. Their Ben Franklin Crafts and Ace Hardware stores are great resources for ideas and supplies for do-it-yourself home and crafts projects, many of which families can do together, such as gardening, building, baking, painting and more! A plethora of project sheets, blogs and videos can be found on their website. They also help you celebrate the Seasons and Holidays! Halloween is on Saturday this year and they have what you need to make your costumes, props and decorations for an awesome party. Visit their HouseMart stores at these Maui locations: Ben Franklin Crafts at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center and Ace Hardware in Kihei, Lahaina and Pukalani. Or, visit them online at benfranklinhawai.com or facebook.com/bfcrafts, and acehardwarehawaii.com or facebook.com/acehardwarehi, for sales and events.

News • TreNds • Tips Papa & Tutu are Grand!

W

hen you hear the word tutu or grandparent, what is the first thing that comes to mind? I grew up far from extended family, so I spent most summers with my grandparents and other relatives. Those were special times. We would fish, pick vegetables from the garden for dinner, and most especially sneak popsicles from their endless supply. What is it about the grandparent–grandchild relationship that is so special? Many grandparents say it’s a combination of many things – fewer daily family and work demands, greater wisdom, the ability to focus on the moment, and the fact that they are no longer the primary disciplinarian. Grandkids say that at grandma, grandpa, tutu man or tutu lady’s house (or whatever their special grandparent name may be), they feel special. Dr. Silverstein has identified three elements

from multiple studies that contribute to strong grandparent-grandchild relationships: 1. The child feels emotionally close to his/her grandparent, 2. The child has regular contact with his/her grandparent, 3. The child sees his/her grandparent as a source of social support (Silverstein & Ruiz, 2006). Today it’s more common that grandparents and grandchildren live far apart. But technology now offers many tools to create closeness over the distance. And even for those grandchildren who have tutu nearby, technology can create that additional closeness. Many grandparents admit that it is because of their grandchildren that they use social media, text, email, or video chat. Technology will never replace quality in-person and one-on-one grandparent-grandchild time. But it is one more tool that many families regularly use to develop and strengthen intergenerational bonds, pass down important heritage and cultural values, and bring enjoyment and fulfillment to life. Heather Greenwood-Junkermeier is a Gerontologist and Extension Agent for the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and is the Chair for Maui’s Hi’i Na Kupuna Coalition for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.
