Fall Fun FAMILY ACTIVITIES FOR THE FALL SEASON

September 21st marks the beginning of fall. Celebrate the new season with a fun activity on a beautiful fall day on the Valley Isle. If you’re short on ideas, look no further!

9 | www.mauifamilymagazine.com

Our Keiki FALL FUN Hikes

Take advantage of the cooler days by visiting some of Maui’s gorgeous hiking spots, such as Makawao Forest Reserve, Sliding Sands Trail at Haleakala National Park, or Red Sand Beach in Hana. Many options on Maui offer different terrains – each amazing and well worth seeing.

Take a Trip Upcountry and Head to a Local Farm Selling Pumpkins

During the fall season many local farms have an abundance of pumpkins ripe enough for baking, or firm enough for practicing your pumpkin carving. Either way, it’s clean, good old-fashioned fall fun.

Create a List of Blessings for Thanksgiving

Get organized for one of America’s favorite holidays. During the busy holiday period, it’s sometimes hard for kids to have the time and space to remember what we are celebrating. Early fall is the perfect time to ask them what they are thankful for. What would they consider a blessing and a perfect subject for the Thanksgiving table?

Build a Bonfire After the hot summer comes to end and before the sometimes colder evenings of winter arrive, don’t forget about gathering around a bonfire during a cool fall night. November is a perfect month to gather family and friends and celebrate the great outdoors. Mark Your Calendars for One of the Many Fall Events...

...such as the Maui Fair. For an evening of thrilling rides and great local food, take your family to this traditional outdoors fair. October 4–7 at the War Memorial Complex in Wailuku. For music lovers, young and old, there’s the Annual Maui Ukulele Festival at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului. This open-air festival is in its 13th year and takes place on Sunday, September 30, 2018, between 1:00 and 6:00pm. The three months of fall offer different options for fun outdoors activities and entertainment. The best thing about being on Maui is the weather this time of year. It’s warm enough to be outdoors for a morning hike and an open-air performance in the evening. RG

Maui Children & Youth Day SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13TH // 4PM–8PM KENOLIO RECREATIONAL CENTER, KIHEI Maui Children and Youth Day is a special celebration to honor the children and youth in Maui. This year, the event will be on Saturday, October 13 from 4:00pm–8:00 pm. The 12th Annual Maui Children and Youth Day is a free, fun, family event co-sponsored by Kihei Youth Center and held at Kenolio Recreational Center in Kihei. There will be continuous entertainment and many free, fun and educational activities for the whole family. Enjoy crafts “to make and take,” games to delight, entertainment by talented youth, taiko drumming, demonstrations, giveaways, keiki ID and more. Keiki who complete the treasure hunt game by visiting booths with activities to engage

and educate, may even win a prize! There will be food booths that benefit South Maui youth clubs. All families and their keiki are welcome! Maui’s 12th annual festival is part of the statewide October celebration of Children and Youth month. Come and celebrate Maui’s keiki and their talents. Providing support and encouragement for our youth can help them grow up to be happy, healthy adults. Free Admission! For additional information, contact Kihei Youth Center at 879-8698.

Our Keiki SCHOOL SUCCESS

Help Your Child Succeed in School E

nsuring your child stays on track at school is easier than you think. Consider the following steps to support your child as he or she navigates school life. Visit the school website and campus. Knowing the campus will help your child feel more comfortable with new surroundings. School websites list information like testing dates and new initiatives. You’ll be informed and better able to plan your schedule. Attend back-to-school nights and parentteacher conferences. Get to know teachers and expectations at these two events. They’ll give you an opportunity to tell teachers about your child’s learning style. They’ll also help you understand the nuances of your school. For instance, perhaps growth rate is more important than attaining certain grades at your child’s school. Support homework expectations. Homework reinforces classroom learning and helps children practice study skills. Make sure their room is well lit, comfortable and quiet, and has sufficient school supplies. Be available to help without providing answers.

Send your child to school ready to learn. Boost your child’s attention span by making a healthy breakfast. Running late? Send along nuts and yogurt, or a sandwich. Children also need the right amount of sleep to learn all day. Establish a consistent bedtime and encourage media-free time to wind down at the end of the day. Teach organizational and study skills. Check your child’s homework folder daily. Talk about keeping an orderly desk, using a planner, and prioritizing tasks. Know test dates so you can remind her to bring home appropriate material, and encourage her to study ahead of time. Teach her how to break down tasks so that preparing for a test is easier. Take attendance seriously. Unless your child is sick, ensure that he get to school on time. Children lose out when they don’t attend school. Besides falling behind academically, they miss out on social time and important school events. Once children feel disconnected from school, reintegrating is hard. With a few simple steps, you and your child can co-create not only a successful school life, but a happy one too.

96th Maui Fair OCTOBER 4TH–OCTOBER 7TH WAR MEMORIAL GYM & COMPLEX, KAHULUI Fair-goers mark your calendars! Enjoy four days of fun, food, friends and family at the 96th Maui Fair on October 4–7, 2018. Maui’s largest event will return for its 96th year and provide something for everyone with fun, ono multicultural food, education, top-notch local entertainment, and quality time with family and friends. This year’s theme is Celebrating the Good Ol’ Days. With attendance nearing 100,000, the Maui Fair is the primary source of funding for many of Maui’s nonprofit and community organizations. It relies entirely on corporate or local business sponsorships,

local donations, and volunteers for support. Get involved with this timeless community tradition by becoming a sponsor. The Fair will open with the traditional parade (Maui’s largest) on Thursday, October 4, and will continue with rides, food, firstrate entertainment and more through the evening of Sunday, October 7, 2018.

Our Keiki HEALTHY EATING

Maui Kids Cook With Heart Inspiring healthy eating for students and their families.

T

he American Heart Association (AHA) is teaming with Maui chefs to give Lahaina-area students and their families a taste of better eating. To encourage healthy eating among youth and their families, the AHA developed the Kids/Teens Cook With Heart program to teach elementary, middle and high school students how to prepare healthful meals as a way to embrace a healthier lifestyle. Studies show that youth who are involved in preparing their own meals are more likely to eat nutritious foods, and more fruits and vegetables. Moreover, the program gets kids excited about trying new foods, and encourages them to share this passion with their families at home, thus expanding the program’s reach. The program boasts a special curriculum designed to meet the needs of local families, align with the Hawaii public schools’ syllabus, and embrace the native and traditional foods in Hawaii. The program is supported by some of West Maui’s best-known chefs who volunteer their time, knowledge, passion and local flavors to the classroom. Among the chefs giving their time include: Paris Nabavi Craig Erickson, Elizabeth (Betty) McDonald, Jojo Vasquez, Kaipo Nagata, Riko Bartolome, and Ryan Luckey.

The volunteer chefs are coordinated by AHA Project Coordinator and Chef Rob Mason. With their help, the Kids Cook With Heart program is making a profound impact in the Lahaina community, and inspiring a new generation of healthy eaters. The Kids/Teens Cook With Heart program will be offered in Lahaina-area elementary, middle and high schools during the 2018-2019 school year through a generous grant to the AHA by the Saunders Family. The AHA hopes to expand the program to other Maui communities if it can attract additional community funding for the program. A crowdfunding site to help fund the program’s expansion has been created. Supporters can text MAUIKIDS to 71777 or visit https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/MAUIKIDS. For more information about the program, contact Eva Bondar, Development Manager for Kids Cook With Heart, at 808.212.4861 or eva. bondar@heart.org. The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association are devoted to saving people from heart disease and stroke – Hawaii’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers. The organization teams with millions of volunteers to fund innovative research, fight for stronger public health policies, and provide lifesaving tools and information to prevent and treat these diseases. The American Heart Association is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. To learn more or to get involved locally, call the AHA’s Honolulu office at 808-377-6630. From neighbor islands, call toll-free at 1-866-205-3256.

Our Keiki TECHNOLOGY

Apps That Spark Thinking & Creativity Today keiki can interact with phones in ways that are positive and educational. Here are some phone apps that can stimulate their minds and imaginations. Parents, celebrate! My Play Home • Ages 3–6 Picture an interactive virtual doll house. In this fun app, kids control characters who can do things such as pour milk, brush their teeth, blow bubbles outside, play music, turn off the lights, or go to bed. It’s an imaginative app that also helps promote life skills. Create a Car • Ages 3–6 Car fanatics will love designing vehicles in this app. Kids can select from 30 car styles, and then customize their vehicle with more than 70 different parts, from plows and fire hoses to solar panels and spoilers. They can store their vehicle in their garage or drive it on roads through different terrains, from the city to the desert. My First Classical Music App • Ages 5–7 This app is full of snippets of classical music, animal-themed animations, and fun facts about all sorts of instruments and classical musicians. Kids can tap to hear the text, or to listen to different instruments, sound effects, and songs.

Big Shows with MFD 2ND HALF OF OCTOBER The Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety’s annual Big Shows were big hits last year. Two separate shows—in Lahaina and Kahului— allowed an estimated 1000 keiki, parents and teachers to enjoy Maui's largest firefighting and fire safety demonstration.

Toontastic 3D • Ages 6–8 This create-your-own-cartoon app is perfect for the film maker of the family. Kids can draw their own world or choose from hundreds of characters and backgrounds in different themed sets full of pirates, princesses, presidents, or astronauts. They can add special effects, sounds and images. Then they can put it all together as a video to share. Magic Piano by Smule • Ages 8+ Kids can now become the pianist they’ve always dreamed of. Just choose a song and follow the beams of light, which guide your fingertips to the correct note. Users control the rhythm and tempo, and can choose from different instruments, levels of difficulty, and musical genres from pop to country to classical. Take the time to research and you’ll find a whole range of apps that are fun and educational. It’s a win-win situation for keiki and parent. Sweet! The shows themselves included firefighting equipment and Hazmat demonstrations, fire and ocean safety presentations, vehicle extrication by Rescue 10 and, of course, a live fire control display. Both shows also included visits from crowd favorites Sparky and Smokey Bear as well as the always popular Air 2 Helicopter. The days were hot in October, and so the kids appreciated getting drenched by fire trucks at the end of each show. The MFD is especially grateful to all of those who help make each of their Big Shows so successful every year. A special mahalo goes out to Hammerhead Metals Recycling and Maui Tow, Tri-Isle Inc. and the Pacific Media Group. This year’s shows will once again be held in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, during the second half of October. Specific dates and locations TBA. They are free and open to the public.

Our Keiki POSITIVE BEHAVIOR

Positive Discipline Equals Positive Behavior BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.

P

erhaps a better way to talk about positive discipline is how to create the behavior patterns you want using positive strategies. Developmentally, your child is wired to please you, and you want to use your positive, connected relationship to help create trust as a basis for shaping your child’s behavior. Here are some tips to guide your thinking: • Make sure the behavior you want is appropriate for his age, skills, and experiences. • You may need to break the behavior down and work on small chunks at a time. If you want your child to be more independent in the morning routine, pick one aspect at a time, such as brushing her hair. • Model the behavior you want. What you do reinforces what your words say. • Verbalize the behavior you want (not what you don’t want). For example, you might say “let’s practice tapping my shoulder when you want my attention” rather than “don’t interrupt me.” • Be specific. Avoid vague terms like “show respect” and replace with “please ask before touching.” • Let your child know in advance what your boundaries are such as “when you are at the park, you may take turns with your sister on the swing.”

• Use your effect to reward your child rather than an item: “I will be so excited to see you come down the stairs with your PJs on.” • Outline the consequence in terms of what the child will gain: “If you are able to take turns, I will be so proud of you” or “You will be allowed to play 10 minutes longer.” • Set your child up for success such as giving him a chance to take turns or giving a reminder. • Immediately give positive praise or a gesture to let her know she did it! • You will also want to embed opportunities for discussing why the behavior is important and how it impacts others. • Ask your child how he feels about the behavior and invite him to problem solve with you. • Distinguish safety rules and talk about why they are important in the context of how important your child’s safety and security is to you. • Remember that a new behavior takes several weeks to master; when your child does it the first time, it does not mean it is mastered so be patient and continue to provide repeated positive support. Our Keiki MINDFULNESS

Kids + Mindfulness = Success “Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.” (mindful.org) Being mindful and learning to focus on the present moment can help us in so many ways. Apart from reducing anxiety, improving our feelings of gratitude, and helping our mental focus, mindfulness can help our children deal with family, social and academic stress. If you have a toddler, or a classroom full of third graders or teenagers, here are a few ways to incorporate mindfulness into your routine. 1. Teach children how to breathe fully. Teach them deep, diaphragmatic breathing – to lift the whole torso on the in-breath. This helps the body fully relax. 2. Use mental anchors like counting breaths, or a simple mantra such as “breathe in and breathe out.” This helps them focus, or bring their attention back if their minds have wandered.

3. Keep it simple and in the moment. Relate mindfulness to the senses. You can ask, “What do you hear? What do you smell?” Try just listening for five breaths, feeling what the body feels like for five breaths, etc. 4. Introduce children to mindfulness in small steps. Don’t make a big deal of it. Some children may giggle or play around. Ignore it. With time and practice, they’ll begin to relax into the experience. 5. Connect mindfulness to everyday life. Invite students to feel the brush and smell the toothpaste while they are brushing their teeth in the bathroom at home. While standing in line in the cafeteria, encourage them to smell what the cafeteria chefs have prepared, to listen to the sound of voices, to see the colors of everyone’s trays and lunch bags. 6. Use mindfulness prompts. You might use a gentle bell for your students, or a little stone carried in the pocket as a reminder. Or you might use a verbal prompt that signals the mind to be present and to unwind. Introducing children to mindfulness is simple and rewarding. Its benefits are immediate and build over time. Beginning this gentle routine when children are young, can help them manage the challenges of growing up and give them tools that last a lifetime.

Our Keiki SIBLINGS

Get Fighting Siblings to Make Peace Fighting siblings is a common phenomenon in families. While many accept it as part of growing up, it can nonetheless be stressful to all concerned and it can continue into adulthood. Is there a way to resolve the fighting in a way that honors all sides? Here are some tips to put an end to sibling squabbling for good. Step in. If you’ve decided you need to play referee in your kids’ fighting, separate them physically to cool off tempers. If the arguing has come to physical blows, it’s pretty clear your kids have not been able to come to an agreement. Don’t feel bad about stepping in and breaking up the brawl. Stepping in not only diffuses the immediate threat, it opens the door to better communication. Don’t take sides. Remain objective when listening to your kids’ arguments. Wanting to be heard and understood could be the root cause of the fight, so creating an open, caring environment is key to moving forward. Agree to disagree. If the initial talk does not resolve the conflict, it might be time for your kids to accept their differences. Point out that things are not always black or white. This is

where they can take ownership of themselves and recognize that it’s ok to have a different perspective. Teach tolerance and respect. Show them the way. Give your kids examples where you’ve felt anger or disappointment in life but have had to be loving and compassionate. Sharing your life’s experiences in a nonpatronizing way can help them know there is another way to be in this world. One-on-one time. Find the time, later on or another day, to be with one child. This is an opportunity to have a two-way conversation about the fighting. Listen without talking and then ask them how they would like to resolve the argument in a compassionate way. You may find they know exactly how to express themselves and solve the issue during this calm reflective moment. Kids can disagree but they don’t have to end up fighting. Open, clear communication is the way forward and, if taught and shown from a young age, can be a skill that becomes second nature. An end to fighting siblings is the beginning of a life of happy, healthy relationships.

Our Keiki GOOD HABITS

Back-to-School Math Tips BY CHAD KISTLER RESCUE TUTORING SERVICE

R

eturning to school for another year almost certainly means one unavoidable truth for junior high and high school students everywhere: Math! Ready or not, that perennial behemoth, which devours so many students’ time, GPA and will to continue school, is back for more! But what if the feared monster could be tamed with ancient technology? In recent years, math has become increasingly digitized. Between digital textbooks, online homework, calculators with WiFi and bluetooth, smartphones, Desmos, Mathway, and Khan Academy, it is easier than ever to depend on technology for even simple calculations. But take caution, noble student! The greatest tool in any math student’s repertoire is still, undoubtedly, the pencil. Working through a problem on a piece of paper (even if the homework is online) is the best way to engage the brain in mathematics – because it requires that the student make his or her work an interactive, physical experience. On a screen, students are not as able to organize their own thoughts because computer keyboards are made for typing letters in text fields – not for the mechanics

of a math problem. With a pencil, students can cross out and simplify, arrange and rearrange, multiply and divide, box in, circle around, and easily organize with another set of parentheses (parenthes-ease?), which engages our body and mind in a completely different (and better) way. Exerting effort into the basic experience of math on a page reaps major rewards in the conceptual understanding of material. Moreover, with a dedication to good habits, the pencil creates a record that can be used as a study guide in the future. So what are these good habits? If a student does not do the following already, then this year is the best year to start. 1. Take notes in class and review them for five or ten minutes each day. 2. Arrange all work in a vertical column, rather than in rows. 3. Show each step of work so that a stranger can follow the logic. 4. Box or circle all answers. 5. Keep and organize completed homework, quizzes, and tests for future study. Rescue Tutoring Service offers a multidisciplinary approach to education, helping students “connect the dots” across diverse subject matter. Our Keiki HALLOWEEN

Tips for a Spooktacular Halloween Halloween is a fun night for both kids and parents, but it can also pose risks to trick-or-treaters. Before heading out, be sure to read these tips for a fun, safe and spooktacular night! 1. Make sure your kids walk in well-lit streets with a trusted adult or in a group if they are old enough to walk without an adult. Remind them to never accept rides from strangers and never trick-or-treat alone. 2. Have your kids only wear well-fitting masks, short costumes and comfortable shoes to avoid tripping and falling on the night. 3. Swords, knives and other costume accessories should be short, soft and flexible to avoid injury to other trick-or-treaters. Make sure costumes, wigs, and other accessories are all flame-retardant. 4. Wear bright colors or attach reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. 5. Stay on sidewalks whenever possible. If you have to walk in the street, stay on the far edge of the road facing traffic. Look both ways before crossing the street and use crosswalks if possible.

6. Check candy for choking hazards, tampering, potential allergens, and non-factory-wrapping before letting kids eat them. 7. Before Halloween, test any makeup or face paint for skin irritants. Avoid face paint made in China, which might contain toxic substances. Make sure that all face paint and makeup is completely washed off before your kids go to bed. 8. Place name tags with your phone number on the inside of their costumes in case your kids get lost. 9. Feed your kids an early dinner before they go out so they don’t snack on candy all night. 10. Bring a few healthy snacks to let your kids eat if they get hungry while you’re out. A bottle of water to wash down the candy is also a great idea. Following these few tips can help ensure Halloween night is not only fun, but also safe, and stress-free for kids and adults alike.

Our Keiki MIND DEVELOPMENT

ICU Program New on Maui

I

CU, Inspiring Children Universally, is a very unique and exciting mind development program for all children around the world, which was created by Nicola Farmer, who lives in the U.K. The ICU program is designed to awaken dormant areas of the midbrain, activate the pineal gland, as well as to awaken a child’s spiritual awareness. This fun and exciting, yet incredibly powerful, program is for children between the ages of 5–12 years old. During these early ans formative years of a child’s life, their left logical brain is not fully activated yet, which allows the ICU techniques to awaken the child’s right creative brain more fully. As a result, they are able to activate their ‘inner vision’ with less effort, which gives them greater confidence to develop their natural gifts. The ICU program has a positive impact on their self-confidence and self-esteem; improves their concentration, attention span, and memory; improves thought processes and strengthens their learning capabilities; enhances their intuitive abilities;

teaches them self-respect and a greater respect for others; and gives them a sense of belonging. They are further able to use their inner light to ‘see’ the physical world around them without the use of their physical eyes. Another important aspect of this learning modality is healing limiting beliefs and traumas stored within the child’s subconscious memory. During the ICU sessions the children learn ways to release their limiting beliefs...this allows them to reach their highest potential, to align with their true purpose, and to develop their unique gifts. During this process, the child activates his/her inner vision and begins to ‘see’ without the use of their physical eyes. As each session progresses, the child learns to see colors, objects, numbers and letters, play games, put together puzzles, read a book or watch TV...all while completely blindfolded. As their conscious awareness expands, so does their intuition! To learn more about the ICU Program contact Darlene Waddell at dwaddells@hotmail.com or 808-351-4134. Baby Keiki

EASING

ANXIETY FOR BABIES & TODDLERS 41 | www.mauifamilymagazine.com

Baby Keiki SEPARATION At some point in their early lives most babies and toddlers experience stress when being separated from their parents. The stress is two-way. Mothers and fathers or any care giver can also be affected by the separation. If you have experienced this stress and are looking for ways to ease the pain, consider the following. It’s normal. Experiencing anxiety when being separated from a loved one is not unusual. Know that when you feel the sense of loss or pain, you are not alone. Rest assured it’s not a sign that you’re overly emotional or sensitive. Prepare ahead of time. Help them before the moment of separation in a way that works for you. You can talk to your child and assure them you will return for pick up time at daycare. Remind them they’ll have fun and that you need to work or do chores. Talk about what you both achieve in this time apart and how it makes a difference to both of you.

Take baby steps. Practice having time apart when they’re young. While uncomfortable at first, a little separation is healthy. It lets your child know they can survive the time apart. Let your spouse be alone with the child so you all gain confidence. Maybe your spouse watches the baby while you run down to the store. Find a “helper.” Explore your house for a special item such as a toy, or blanket, that your toddler can have or hold to ease the separation. The idea is to have an interesting distraction for your absence. It could even be a special item that only comes out when you have to leave. Five minutes after a teary goodbye, your baby could be happily engrossed in their new swing or soft toy. Train yourself to work through the sad moments. Many more will likely arise in the future but you may find that parenthood, and their part in growing up, is a series of challenges that can be overcome. Each phase of your lives together from birth onwards has its own moments of anxiety. Separation anxiety is real and normal. Be kind to yourself and realize you can move past it. Make it your intention to create the best way to say goodbye to your child. Try a number of things and find what works for your relationship.

Baby Keiki WELLNESS

Post-Natal Depletion How to Feel Like Yourself Again

G

iving birth to a baby is one of the most beautiful and memorable moments in a mother’s life. But the experience, often painful and stressful, can leave the mother feeling physically and emotionally depleted. To help get your body back to its healthy, vibrant state, you can try some of the following. Take your symptoms seriously. Whether it’s dizziness, lack of sleep, or headaches, know that depletion can take different forms. Some may be quick fixes, others may be difficult to diagnose. However you’re feeling, pay attention and get the attention you need. See your doctor. Ask specifically to get your blood work done so you can find out the root cause of your symptom. Be your own advocate at the doctors office, if you feel there is some resistance on your doctor’s part to getting the tests done.

Sleep well. Getting rest can be tricky for new mothers. Disruption in sleep at night can wreak havoc during the day. Take cat naps if you need, or raise your feet to help your body and mind relax. The dishes can wait, guests can prepare their own food. Put yourself first and see sleep as an absolute must. This is no time to be supermom. Eat nutritious food. Fill your body with food to replace the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients your body has used up. Forget about losing the baby fat, too. This is not the time to be losing weight. You need the calories for you and for the breast milk for your baby. Hydrate. Drink, drink, drink. Water will revitalize your body and help your energy level. Try adding vitamin or mineral packets for the extra boost that you need. This applies whether you’re nursing or not. While taking care of a newborn is all a mother wants to do, remember that taking care of yourself is only to your baby’s benefit. It’s much easier to be the mother you want to be when you are vibrant and healthy.

Baby Keiki BRAIN SCIENCE

How Understanding Three Threats to the Brain Can Help Your Keiki BY KIM DOLAN BODHI WELLNESS & PSYCHOTHERAPY

W

ith so many opinions, social norms and parenting styles, it is not uncommon for parents to feel lost, at some point, during their parenting journey. In understanding how the brain works parents can have a better understanding of their child’s behavior. This article will explore three major threats to the brain and offer some everyday strategies to equalize these threats. The first threat to the brain is the Unknown. Increases in negative behaviors are often seen during transitions. The brain interprets transition as many unknowns. Often children will use past negative experiences to fill in the blank of the unknown, creating anxiety. Do yourself a big favor and make the unknown known for your child. Having calendars and countdowns are all helpful in allowing the child to have a sense about what is happening next. Second Threat is Incongruency in the Environment. The brain is always scanning the environment to make sure everything adds up/makes sense. The brain loves patterns and routines. When something is incongruent, it can trigger the brain’s

alert system. For example, if someone is feeling angry but smiling, this lands as a threat in the brain because it does not make sense. When a parent is authentic and congruent, it creates a deep feeling of safety for the child. Naming your experience or feelings out loud is also extremely helpful because your child is not making an effort to figure you out. Third Threat is Should/Shouldn’t yourself. Every parent has had the thought, “ I should have…”. This thought triggers your threat response because there is an expectation that you need to be someone different at that moment. When you model being your authentic self, you are giving your child permission to be their authentic self. Give yourself consent to trust and listen to your intuition regarding your child in each moment-to-moment experience. Baby Keiki SLEEP

Managing Nighttime Fear Overcoming Fear of the Dark Fear of the dark is fairly common among young children. While it sometimes goes away by itself, parents can take practical steps to help eliminate nighttime fears forever. Here are six steps to ending nighttime fears. 1. Tell your child you understand. Don’t belittle children when they talk about being afraid of the dark. Instead, ask them what frightens them and why. This shows you care and helps them feel confident in your ability to help. 2. Don’t tell him not to be afraid of monsters or ghosts. Don’t give his fear any credibility by saying, “If you’re good the monsters won’t come.” What they want to hear is a positive and understanding parent with a game plan. 3. Empower your child. When you’ve discovered why your child is scared of the dark, co-create a list of things to help ease their fears. Knowing what triggers the fears is key because it allows you to go directly to the cause. When your child is involved in the fear busting, it makes them feel resourceful and powerful. 4. Eliminate shadows and scary furniture in their room. In the daylight scan your child’s room and see what could be a potential trigger. Are there shadows or big pieces of furniture or

toys that could be scary? Imagine yourself as a child, get down to their eye level, or lie in their bed and take stock. 5. Establish a soothing bedtime routine. Make sure your wind down time involves no television or scary books. Try some soft music, funny jokes, or anything light-hearted and fun. Nightlights in your child’s room and other spaces, such as the bathroom or hallway, can help ease fears. 6. Say no to sleepovers with you. Resist the urge to have your child sleep in your bed, unless you feel absolutely necessary. Creating a dependent child is not the way to go. This will make him feel unable to cope with nighttime fears unless you are there. Instead, remind them you are close by and there to keep them safe. Show your child nighttime fears can be conquered by being understanding and practical. With practice and time you can create a soothing bedtime routine that helps him relax and fall asleep effortlessly.

HOW TO FEEL LIKE

Ohana SUPERPOWER

Looking for suggestions to turn up your inner Superwoman? Read these six simple steps below to snap the Superwoman back into you. 1. Stand in a power pose.

Whatever that means to you, stand in a strong, energetic pose and open up yourself to the wonder of who you are. Does this sound bizarre? Try it. Being in a quiet space, filled with only your own personal energy, can be powerful and calming. 2. Let go, let go, let go.

As women, we sometimes take on too much and expect too much from ourselves. That todo list, if you have to have one, can be slashed in half. Get real by listing, in descending order, what you feel you need to do today. If you’re down to five things, circle the two things that you feel would make a positive difference to your wellbeing. Now, do those two things–and only those two things–today! 3. Look for the good.

In other words, appreciate what you have. If you’re rolling your eyes, remember that you are fortunate to have eyes to roll! Now, you’re beginning to see the value in this exercise.

4. Open your heart.

Random acts of kindness are so important – they can make a big difference for someone else, and they make us feel good about ourselves. Whether it’s charity work or just holding a door open for someone, there is always a way to be kind. 5. Take care of yourself.

If you enjoy taking a long soak in the bath, do it! Treat yourself the way you would treat your own child or pet, and simply be that loving to yourself. 6. Try something new.

It doesn’t matter what it is. It could be trying out a new recipe for the family, wearing a pretty dress for dinner instead of sweats, or taking a hike in the forest with a friend. Do something that is refreshing and revitalizing, and that takes you beyond your normal scope. When you’ve done these things, look back, take it all in, and smile like your own inner Superwoman.

Ohana GOALS

Five Steps to Transform Fear Fear is an emotion that everyone experiences to some degree. It often limits your ability to make decisions, and prevents you from reaching your dreams or goals. But fear can also be healthy, and even instrumental, for creating the life you desire. Learn to transform fear into a positive experience with these five simple steps. 1. Determine if your goal is a “must have” Evaluate your goal. Is it a “must have?” Will you feel unfulfilled without it? Once you feel your goal is essential, the fear of avoiding it should outweigh the fear of failure. This is the point where inspiration and motivation to act will come freely. 2. Recognize the excuses Procrastination and fear sometimes go hand-inhand. You’re too tired or don’t have the time. Are these statements true, or excuses that help you avoid potential failure? Adjust your schedule so you can get more sleep. Make time in your day. Override the voices in your head that say “you can’t,” when you know they are excuses. 3. Be open to growing Get familiar with the unfamiliar. Remember that it’s not about achieving something and being

perfect along the way. It’s about being comfortable with the unknown and continuing your journey. Your path may have challenges. Accept them and you will step closer to your goals. 4. Know yourself on a deeper level Learn from the setbacks you have had. What’s valuable is the lesson you take from those experiences and how you apply them moving forward. Actively choose to learn from painful moments and take control of your own life. 5. Accept failure Realize that failure is an inevitable part of success and you will become less afraid of it. It can provide valuable learning experiences that will positively impact your approach to life. Recognize that while we don’t always talk about failure, everyone has encountered it on their path to greatness. Everyone faces fear at some point in life. How you decide to respond to it is what sets you apart. Work toward overcoming fear by being true to yourself, and open to learning about how you can have the life you truly desire. Love horses? Riding With Aloha and West Maui Ranch welcome you to come spend a Summer evening at our barn. Twice a year we love to open our barn doors to the people of Maui. Ohana RESISTANCE

Are You Resisting Resistance? German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “I assess the power of a will by how much resistance, pain, torture it endures and knows how to turn to its advantage.” Are you aware of resistance in your life? Resistance can manifest in different ways. It could be a conversation you’d rather not have with someone. Perhaps there’s a particular place you’d prefer not to visit for reasons unclear to you. Resistance can make us feel uncomfortable and even sick, but it shows up in our lives for a reason. It can be a gateway to a whole new perspective if we are willing to be open. Being aware of resistance is the first step towards releasing it. Accepting the truth about a situation allows you to connect with yourself. From this place of non-resistance, aligning with your own inner wisdom is effortless. Be honest about how you feel. Since resistance holds you in a place of denial, it’s easy from this place to get stuck and become confused about how to proceed. Denying the truth only compounds the resistance. This is the perfect time to be compassionate and loving with yourself.

3rd Annual Taste of Upcountry: Celebrating 40 Years of Montessori School of Maui SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29TH // 6PM–10PM 2933 BALDWIN AVE., MAKAWAO

Make a promise to be a friend to yourself, despite your history or past. Painful experiences in our lives can make us feel inadequate or unwanted. Accepting who you are involves believing that you are good enough, that you deserve to be loved, and that you belong. Once you’re realigned with your true self, be ready to continue releasing resistance. There’s a good chance more of it will show up. Find a system that works for you. Keep a journal. Talk about it with a friend and share how good it feels. Prepare ahead of time if you know a certain situation usually brings up resistance in you. Maintaining the flow of releasing will help you get back in your groove. It might be uncomfortable, but resistance can teach us a lot about acceptance and honesty. If you feel it shows up for you, be brave and take steps to clear your space and get on with your life. Montessori School of Maui’s Taste of Upcountry is designed to showcase the talent, toil and camaraderie of Maui’s renowned chefs and Upcountry farmers and purveyors. The event will be held under a tent on the school’s beautiful campus lawn in Makawao, featuring culinary stations presenting delicious pupu and dessert tastes for all attendees. In addition to the “tastes”, the evening’s festivities will also include musical guests and a silent and live auction. The event is 21+ and open to the public. This is a BYOB event, and there will be no sale of alcohol. This is the primary fundraising event for the 2018–19 school year, and all proceeds will directly support the School’s operating budget. General Admission Tickets start at $90. Contact Ali Grimes at alisong@momi.org or visit momi.org for more information.

Ohana FRESH FOOD

Grow Some Good

F

or many Maui students, back to school also means back to the garden. School gardens have become an intrinsic part of learning and have sprung up from teacher and student requests. Grow Some Good (GSG), a key provider of school gardens on Maui, got its start in 2008 when a 2nd grade science teacher requested volunteer assistance to start a garden. She wanted to teach her students the science behind growing plants. Other teachers saw the educational value of these gardens and requested more space and garden instructors. Today, GSG serves approximately 4,500 students each year at 11 Maui schools. School gardens are outdoor living laboratories that provide education in science, math, art, culture, and environmentalism. When lessons in the garden are aligned with school curricula, they provide an important educational resource that reinforces classroom learning and is particularly beneficial for tactile learners and special needs students. Students get hands-on experience in ecology, including lessons on composting, identifying beneficial bugs and pests, photosynthesis, and pollination. Students enjoy garden time as an exciting break from sitting in the classroom, and as a time to explore the wonders of the outdoor world.

According to the State of Obesity report, in 2016, 26 percent of youth ages 10-17 in Hawaii were considered overweight or obese, a condition that has lasting implications for health. Helping students acquire a taste for healthy foods can have life-long benefits. GSG programs teach the nutritional content of food, and inspire students to make healthy food choices. In the gardens, students are often introduced to fruits, vegetables or herbs they have never tried before. “If they grow it, they’ll taste it,” says Kathy Becklin, Executive Director for GSG. “If they prepare a dish with it, they’ll eat more,” she added. GSG works closely with the statewide Farm to School Hui, which endeavors to expand the number of local foods offered in school cafeterias, including school garden-grown produce. “Students are always excited to eat the food they’ve grown when it is used in their schools’ cafeterias, and we want to see more of that,” said Becklin.

Visit growsomegood.org to volunteer or donate.

Ohana EMPOWERMENT

How to Stop Being Defensive “You have to feel confident. If you don’t, then you’re going to be hesitant and defensive, and there’ll be a lot of things working against you.” -Clint Eastwood Do you feel like you are a defensive person? If so, would you like to change that? Here are a few strategies you can use the next time you feel attacked or questioned. Become aware. Recognizing your defensiveness in a given moment is the first step to making a healthy shift. In defensive mode, we automatically listen for the inaccuracies in the other person’s complaint so that we can make our case and remind the other party of their wrongdoings. Awareness allows us space, which can help us become neutral. Calm down. A defensive body is a stressful body. Our nerves, blood pressure and breathing are affected. Take some deep breaths and regroup before you respond. Listen when you’re ready. Don’t interrupt the other person. Instead, try to listen, with an open mind, to what the other person is saying. Listen to the words they use, without interpreting them.

Ask for clarification. This gives the other person a chance to explain their point of view, and gives you more time to listen. It also helps you develop a mindset of curiosity. Find some common ground. Starting with the positive is a good way to start. Find something you agree with and begin with that. It shows you’ve listened and that you understand. If you believe you made a mistake, make an apology. It’s empowering for you to own your part in this, even if it is negative behavior. It shows you’ve considered the facts and have another perspective now. This is not easy to do, but you will feel the emotional and physical effects of the release. Don’t counter-criticize. Explain your perspective and behavior you saw fit at the time. If needed, continue the conversation another time. Being removed from the initial emotion allows you space before responding. You can consider your response and the best way to express it. Listening and remaining calm when you feel defensive can only serve you well. They allow you space to gain perspective and clarity. You’ll then feel empowered and confident enough to respond in a healthy way.

Ohana EDUCATION

Montessori School of Maui BY DR. ERIC DUSTMAN MONTESSORI SCHOOL OF MAUI

M

ontessori School of Maui (MOMI) has remained a favorite choice for many on Maui for years. On the eve of its 40th anniversary, it continues to grow rapidly. We believe such demand is specifically related to our child-centered, holistic approach to educating children. Research shows that the Montessori approach is beneficial and it will support the advancement of the greater good. Authentic Montessori programs such as MOMI’s are designed to provide specially prepared environments for young people ages 18 mos to 14 years, so that they may develop socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically. Through this approach, children are supported to gain the abilities necessary to participate successfully in society. For very young children, the focus is on physical and social development; and as they grow older, exercising their capacity for critical thinking takes center stage as this is what they will later employ when they acquire information and apply it to the real world. At the onset, the Montessori environment is the child’s first independent step away from the home. Shared relationships develop first. This is the foundation of emotional competence, without which the child can neither gain confidence nor take the next steps toward independence.

The role of the teacher in such an environment is to create a connection between the child and a carefully prepared environment. Here, it is the task of the teacher to observe the development of the child and to guide her toward materials that provide appropriate intellectual challenge and help her make sense of the world. MOMI’s program focuses on providing for the developmental needs of children. It recognizes and supports the needs of individual children, while supporting social interaction within the group and recognizing the significant roles of both the literal and physical environment in the process of learning. Ultimately, it is important to ensure that the program you choose for your child is appropriate – from the way it makes you feel to the education it promotes. To learn more about Montessori School of Maui and the possibilities it can provide your child, please call 808.573.0374 or visit their website at www.momi.org. Dr. Eric Dustman is presently Head of School at Montessori School of Maui, and has served in a similar capacity for nearly two decades in Ohio and mainland China. He holds Elementary I and II credentials, and has lent support to the writing of standards for authentic Montessori school with the American Montessori Society for nine years.

Ohana RELATIONSHIPS

Building Healthy Relationships Why Ignoring Irritations Doesn't Work We all have those relationships in our lives – the prickly, irritating ones that challenge us at our very core. While ignoring them feels better, is it best to face them and work it out? To answer that question, consider the following. There’s usually a reason why someone irritates you. Take an objective look at the relationship. Be neutral. Is there a missing piece of information that now helps you feel less triggered? Do you understand why you feel the way you do, and can you just accept the relationship as it is? Take advantage of the opportunity to be more open-hearted and understanding. Ignoring irritations doesn’t make them magically disappear. Instead, it makes us dread bumping into that person at the store, or having them over for Thanksgiving if that person is a family member. The pain remains! Sometimes we lash out at innocent bystanders because we’ve just spent time with a person that annoys us. A phone conversation with a distant relative might irritate you, but is it fair to be snippety with your immediate family after that phone call?

Also, do you ever wonder if you’re equally irritating to some? Having contrasting experiences makes us different from the next person. You may irritate some people with different experiences, habits and viewpoints, in the same way some people irritate you. Minor irritations can grow and transform into deep-seated loathing over time. Why not let go of a minor dispute with the neighbor, or disagreement with your spouse; or agree to disagree? Letting emotions fester is unhealthy for all concerned. If you have irritating relationships in your life, consider how you can gracefully say goodbye to them or kindly accept them. Choose a way to move forward and know that healthy relationships come from clear, honest communication. Put on your costume and come spend the morning decorating, playing, riding horses, and of course, trick-or-treating! Riding With Aloha welcomes kids (and adults) of all ages to come get in the Halloween spirit at the barn. The morning will start with decorating horses in Halloween costumes. At 10am trick-or-treat rides will begin, which means trick-ortreating on a horse! Riders will be led around a path where they will get goodies for both themselves and their horse companion. There will be lots of games on foot and of course, a costume contest– for both horses and people.

Riding with Aloha: Halloween with Horses SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28TH // 10AM–1PM 700 PUNAKEA LP., LAUNIUPOKO

People of all ages are welcome to come ride! It’s $2 a person or $5 per family to participate in the trick-or-treat ride. All other activities are free! The horse decorating will begin at 9am - please RSVP to kcaviv@gmail.com in advance to decorate and/or participate in the trick-or-treat ride. www.ridingwithaloha.com

This fall, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center celebrates young artists with family-friendly gallery experiences! The fun begins with the Hui’s Annual Youth Exhibition, which opens August 10 from 5 to 6pm and remains open for all to enjoy through August 24. This colorful and creative display features the work of 250+ youth of ages 5–15 participating in the Hui’s Summer Camp Kaluanui and Arts Academy. On August 28, from 9am to 6pm, Maui youth are invited to enter their artwork for selection as part of Mālama Wao Akua – a juried art exhibition celebrating the native species of Maui Nui (Maui, Lana‘i, Moloka‘i, Kaho‘olawe). Students in elementary, middle, and high school are encouraged to use their creative talents to raise awareness about protecting native species. Entry forms may be

found at huinoeau.com. Mālama Wao Akua opens on September 14 from 5 to 8pm and is on view through November 9. “Stretching creative muscles through the visual arts helps keiki improve academic performance, experience an overall sense of wellbeing, and begin to prepare for creative careers! We love celebrating our young artists and their incredible imaginations through these exhibitions,” said Senior Program Manager Lana Coryell. New Humpbacks of Hawaii Exhibit Hall & 3D Dome Theater Opening Soon EXPECTED OPENING: LATE FALL 2018 MAUI OCEAN CENTER, MAALAEA Construction of Maui Ocean Center’s new Humpbacks of Hawaii Exhibit Hall and 3D Dome Theater has begun! The 1,200-square-foot exhibit and 139-seat dome theater bring together an immersive, educational experience focusing on the humpback whales’ nomadic lifestyle, behavior along their migration routes, and the different roles they engage in. Driven by the idea of creating an experience too large for a tank, the dome theater combines groundbreaking technology and majestic cinematography to bring guests face-to-face with humpback whales while experiencing the beauty and power of nature. Designed with ongoing feedback from Maui’s cultural and scientific communities, Maui Ocean Center plans include the

theater as a venue for community-based events to support non-profit and scientific organizations. The theater will be Maui’s first planetarium, which allows for presentations such as celestial navigation workshops and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s “Science on a Sphere.” The Humpbacks of Hawaii Exhibit Hall and 3D Dome Theater is anticipated to open late fall 2018.
