Our Keiki NEWS • TRENDS • TIPS Easter Activities “Easter Egg Hunts: proof your child can find things when they really want to.” -someecards.com Easter celebrations often include attending a church service, enjoying a potluck, and participating in a classic Easter egg hunt. Here are some more Easter activities you can enjoy with your family and friends: Build Easter egg towers. Pile plastic Easter eggs on a flat surface. Then have the kids see how many egg halves they can stack. The tallest stack wins! Create art. Fill boiled egg shells (emptied of egg) with paint and toss them at a canvas. Colorful works of art can be created in just minutes! Play the guessing game. Fill plastic Easter eggs with different items, such as popcorn kernels in one, jelly beans in another, coins in another, etc. Ask the players to guess what is inside each egg. Whoever guesses the most eggs correctly, wins. Go on a glow-in-the-dark egg hunt. Place flameless tea light candles (along with a treat) inside jumbo-sized Easter eggs. Wait until dark, then turn on the flameless tea lights. Let the fun begin after sunset.
Play the jelly bean pickup game. Give each player a small bowl full of jelly beans and a straw. Players suck through the straw to pick up one jelly bean at a time, and then transfer it into another bowl. The winner is the player with the most jelly beans in his or her bowl at the end of one minute. Visit the Easter bunny. Check with the shopping centers on Maui, as they often host the Easter bunny for photos each spring. Surprise each other with confetti Easter eggs. Fill emptied eggshells with confetti and glitter, then tape tissue paper to cover the opening. Crush the confetti eggs over each other’s heads for good luck (or just for fun!). For a more environment-friendly option, fill the eggs with birdseed. JP
Do you want to pick your own basket of fresh, juicy strawberries? Kula Country Farms is hosting its annual Strawberry U-pick patch, and everyone is invited! It’s Strawberry season! The strawberries are planted and will be ready to be picked at the end of February. Can’t get any fresher than that! The farm has also scheduled fun weekend activities and a special Easter event on Saturday, April 19th. There may even be a special Easter egg hunt for the kids. Bring your entire family for a fun day of strawberry picking anytime from the end of February until early June!
Strawberry U-Pick Patch at Kula Country Farms OPENS END OF FEBRUARY EASTER EVENT: SATURDAY, APRIL 19TH ON KULA HWY., ACROSS FROM RICE PARK
Spend time exploring the Children’s Garden with lots of garden games including a 7-hole farm golf with miniature replicas of Kula landmarks that tell you a story of how the island's diversity has influenced Hawaii’s agriculture. The food trailer will also be open for business selling strawberry shortcake, strawberry lemonade, and many more strawberry desserts. The farm stand also has jams, sauces, fresh produce and more for sale. Kula Country Farms is located on Kula Highway, across from Rice Park, past mile marker 13. Kulacountryfarmsmaui.com.

Our Keiki I LOVE YOU
Ways to Say “I Love You” to Your Kids “Let me love you a little more before you’re not little anymore.” -Michelle Thevenot During this time of year, we are reminded to show our love for one another by celebrating Valentine’s Day. But we need to continue showing love to our kids throughout the year. While elaborate displays of generosity and kindness are great, it is the little, everyday actions that matter the most. In the book The 5 Love Languages of Children, author Gary Chapman explains that we all have a primary “love language”; and as parents, ours may differ from our children’s. By discovering what speaks to our children, we are able to better show them our love. According to Chapman, the five love languages include words of affirmation, acts of service, affection, quality time, and gifts. As you consider creative ways to show your children love, think about which “language” speaks to them the most. Is it quality time? If so, play a board game or basketball game together. Is it words of affirmation? You could write a sweet note for your children to find in their lunchbox. Is it acts of service? Perhaps bring your son or daughter a refreshing
drink, just because. When we take the time to discover what speaks to our children’s hearts, it becomes less of a struggle to figure out how to show them our love. April Risinger, Maui mother of three, shared that she tries to carve out one-on-one time with each child. “Playing chess or watching an old favorite movie with my 8-year-old while the babies nap, and baking cookies with my toddler and playing with the bubble machine with my baby, are some of the ways I spend time with them individually.” Showing love beyond Valentine’s Day with consistent intentionality will make a huge impact in your children’s lives. Our Keiki DAYDREAMERS
Engaging the Daydreamer: Thinking Out of the Box
I
f you have a daydreamer in your family, count yourself lucky! Daydreamers are able to tune out noise and hang in their own personal space for as long as they are allowed. This is a talent in today’s busy, media-centric world. However, in social situations such as school, where being actively involved is required, how can we keep daydreamers engaged in the task at hand? While many dreamers are creative and bright children, it may be challenging for them to get work done during the school day, pay attention to the teacher and turn in homework. Here are a few tips to re-engage the daydreamer: Consider if your child is getting enough time to play quietly on his own. With regular quiet time, daydreamers are more likely to exhibit time management and problem solving abilities. Quiet time also fosters creativity, self-confidence and independence. The opportunity to drive their own play without compromising for the benefit of a group, nurtures daydreamers on a deep level. Outside activities like swimming, art, theater or playing an instrument can help with concentration skills and provide avenues for self-expression. When dream mode time is satisfied, the classroom environment becomes easier. Discuss note taking with your child’s teacher. Writing down basic words or pictures describing what the teacher says, can be helpful. That way your child may be lost, but can continue to focus on the teacher or task at hand.
Seating your daydreamer child toward the front of the classroom or off to the side, may be helpful. By being in the middle of the action, his thoughts may be less likely to wander. Encourage your child to ask the teacher questions during instructional time. Look for opportunities to connect with and listen to your child one-on-one, whether it’s while driving in the car or being engaged in a creative process like cooking or baking. Knowing that you are interested in her thoughts may help her feel less inclined to drift off. Embracing your child’s nature and helping him create a positive learning environment can be a healing step in a possibly challenging situation. We are a world of diverse learners, and the key to success is exploring our options in the classroom and at home. RG

Our Keiki SELF-CALMING
The Most Powerful Response When Your Child is Inconsolable BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.
T
he first thing to realize when your child is inconsolable is that he is overwhelmed. Your response might be to problem-solve, offering options to feel better, however your child won’t likely be available even to your best idea. Avoid the temptation to “distract” your child from his emotions. Part of his developmental journey is to feel the full range of his emotions robustly and to be able to recover from them. The best thing you can do is to be present, sitting with your child in the “puddle” of her emotion. Specifically, being in close proximity, little to no verbiage and offering comfort through touch if your child seeks it. This can take a short time or quite a long time. Physiologically, when your child is in an overload state, she is simply not available for talking things out or problem solving. In fact, words will likely escalate your child’s emotion. Big emotions are so overwhelming and your child needs to experience her emotion getting smaller and moving to a calm state. Helping your child to calm applies even when he has done something wrong. You still want to help him learn to calm in order for him to be able to process with you what happened! Here are some other specific strategies to support your child to self-calm:
• Little to no talking from you; wait until she initiates and then respond with empathy “yeah, this is tricky” • Deep breaths are the fastest way to help your body calm, so you can model taking slow deep breaths while beside your child • Once your child has started to calm, drinking something will further help to regulate your child’s breathing • If your child is calm enough to drink, offer a snack; continue to be present • Once your child is calm, it still may be too soon to go back and reflect on the situation (your child may go back to being inconsolable) so you can offer to “check-in” about it later in the day • Later, with a drawing medium such as a large white board, paper, sand, you can offer to draw out what happened as your child narrates it to you • You can then discuss if she liked the way it turned out and problem-solve other options together. If your child needs to repair the situation with a peer then you can plan that out too. Congratulations! You have supported your child to tolerate his big emotion, to self-calm, to be reflective about his actions and to problem solve, all important life long skills. Our Keiki TECHNOLOGY
Teaching Social Media Behavior & Boundaries As our children start using social media, it is vital for them to be prepared with proper training for their behavior and boundaries online. One idea is to create a written agreement between you both regarding their online interactions. Below are a few ideas on what you may want to include: • Understand that what you post online does not disappear. Never post anything online that you do not want the whole world to know. • Keep your personal information private, such as your real name, age, address, phone number, etc. • Don’t ask others for their personal information. • Get an adult if anything inappropriate pops up. • Don’t click on inappropriate pop-ups or ads. • Understand that your parents can see everything you access online. • Promise to not cyberbully, and report any cyberbullying to your parents. • Never say anything negative about a person online. • Never discuss a disagreement with someone online. If you know the person in real life, then discuss your issue face to face, not over social media.
• Ask permission before posting photos of others. • Never agree to meet in person with someone you “meet” online. In addition to a written agreement, teaching good social media behavior goes hand in hand with being a good citizen, where the truth of “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is essential. Encourage your children to “THINK” and ask themselves if what they are posting is: “True,” “Helpful,” “Inspiring,” “Necessary” and “Kind.” Bridgett Parker, Maui mom of two and blogger at bridgettlovesmaui.wordpress. com, reminds her children: “You never know who is watching what you post online. So just like in real life, be polite and say nice things, or don’t say anything at all. Once it’s out on the web, it’s there for the world to see. Be pono.” JP

Department of Water Supply’s Annual Poster & Video Contests 9th Annual Water Conservation Poster Contest The Department of Water Supply is currently holding its 9th Annual Water Conservation Poster Contest open to all Maui County students from grades K through 8, and 2nd Annual Source Water Protection Video Contest for high school students in public, private and home-schools. The Water Conservation Poster Contest is designed to encourage our young artists to express their own ideas in relation to the chosen theme. We invite students to use their artistic talents to celebrate drinking water and to promote water conservation. “Use Water Wisely” is this year’s theme. Roughly the same amount of water exists on earth today as when it first formed on the planet. Our community’s increased demand for water and periods of drought make it critical that we all do our part to conserve water. Winning entries will be featured in the Department of Water Supply’s Water Conservation Calendar for 2019.
2nd Annual Source Water Protection Video Contest The Source Water Protection Video Contest is open to all Maui County high school students from Grades 9-12. The purpose of this contest is to provide our youth (in a group of 3 or 4 or individual) with an opportunity to learn about source water protection and to utilize their creative talents to produce a 1.5 minutes to 3 minutes long video showcasing the importance of protecting our ground and surface water sources, which our residents and visitors depend on for drinking water and other important uses. The theme for this year is “Clean Water, Everyone’s Business”. Entry forms and contest rules and guidelines are available at www.mauiwater. org. Entries must be received by March 16, 2018. For inquiries, please call 463-3110.

Our Keiki PARENTING
Raising Conscious Children
BY STEPHANIE GARCIA, MA, BCN
“You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer...bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.” -Kahlil Gibran (Prophet/Poet, 1923) This sentiment echoes the wishes and hard work I see in each parent and caregiver I encounter. We do our best to teach, prepare, and eventually launch empathetic, loving, earth and soul conscience children into the world. Guided by morals, traditions, rules, and our behavior, we imprint on our children exactly what we expect and hope for their future. In a world inundated with technological distractions, an epidemic of bullying, and selfaggrandizement, what are we missing? How do we help to develop more awakened, mindful beings in the upcoming generations? Here are a few suggestions: • Modeling. What behavior do we display and is there a discrepancy in what we do and what we hope our children will replicate? Are we empathetic, selfless, and present most of the time? Do we speak badly about others, lie, or not follow through with our word? What are we teaching our young about being an adult? • Being Open. Carl Jung, the father of humanistic psychology, proved that it is by being open, non-judgmental and treating others with unconditional positive regard that others feel most connected and open with us. Can our children come to us with absolutely anything without shame or guilt, and still hold
our love? • Balance. Living a life of balance teaches our children what we value most. Do we prioritize time with them? Do we offer enough one-onone open dialogue, eye-contact and affection that help children thrive and raise their sense of self-worth and understanding of who they are? Finally, for children with extreme moods, psychological issues or learning disabilities, providing a holistic approach through counseling and biofeedback can benefit. Children with such issues can and do learn to self-regulate, overcome their difficulties and excel in school and interpersonal relationships. Reflecting on Gibran’s poetry, we are the bows, and how far and swift our children go depends on us. Stephanie Garcia, MA, BCN holds a Master’s of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy and is a Board Certified Neurofeedback Specialist. She is an accredited member of the Hawaii Association of Biofeedback and currently works in private practice. For more information please visit neurofeedbackmaui.com

Our Keiki LANGUAGE
The Benefits of Learning Languages at a Young Age BY EMMANUELLE BETHAM
Y
oung children learn everything fast, and the benefits of learning languages are undeniable. Scientists have observed positive physical changes in the brain structure when stimulated by language learning at an early age. Speaking more than one language helps develop elocution and pronunciation, rhythm, expression, memory, and many life skills such as logic, problem solving, critical thinking, awareness, creativity, objectivity, tolerance, relativity, resilience and adaptability. Evidently, these ‘soft’ skills result in better academic achievement. Contrary to popular belief, a child does not need to master English first before learning another language. Learning a foreign language does not inhibit the primary language, but enhances and improves it. So if a child struggles with his/her mother tongue, learning an ‘extra’ language will not add
complications but will more likely provide the support needed to overcome initial language difficulties. Therefore, one does not need to be a ‘natural’ at learning languages in order to benefit from the exercise of switching from one language to another. Each language is like a code that we operate to achieve something we want or need. For example, when a child wants an ice cream, they will quickly learn the words they need to ask for it. In a classroom setting, language acquisition is more natural, easier and faster, when language is used for a purpose of interest to the learner. Language needs to be taught with the learner in mind, making sure it enables them to achieve their goal or follow a genuine interest, even if that is just to have fun. This is how children learn. Emmanuelle Betham teaches French and English as a Second Language to children and adults, and helps English native speakers improve their self-confidence for oral performance and successful communication. Email mauilangcom@gmail.com or call (808) 7403021 for more information.

Baby Keiki NEWS • TRENDS • TIPS Bonding with Baby “A baby fills a place in your heart you never knew was empty.” -Author Unknown Bonding with your baby is a foundational need for your baby’s development and wellbeing. The bonding process begins in the womb. For example, as a mother caresses her growing tummy, the baby responds to her touch with kicks and movement. This physical response shared between the two, invokes a natural bond. Fathers can also grow their bond with a baby before birth, as they talk to the baby and feel for its kicks. In an article on pregnancyandbaby.com, Caron B. Goode states: “Touch and movement provide the growing child with awareness and the innate knowledge that she is alive. This awareness will follow her through birth and into the world where touch will continue to play a key role in her development.” In addition to bonding with your baby before birth, once he or she arrives you can continue strengthening your bond in the following ways: • Provide skin-to-skin contact. • Sing lullabies. • Smile at your baby often.
Kamehameha Schools Annual Ho’olaule’a SATURDAY, APRIL 21ST // 9AM–3PM 270 ‘A’APUEO PARKWAY, PUKALANI
• Talk to your baby about everything. Describe what you are doing. Point out colors and shapes and sizes. • Feed your baby often, holding him or her closely. • Respond promptly to your baby’s cries. • Say “I love you” often to your baby. • Wear your baby around the house or as you run errands. • Read bedtime stories together. • Play with your baby. • Spend time in nature together. • Give your baby soothing baths. As your baby matures into a toddler, the bonding continues through listening to him or her, spending time playing games together, taking picnics to the beach together, giving hugs, and always telling your child you love him or her. Your unconditional love and support will create a bond that will last for years to come. JP
Kamehameha Schools will host its annual Ho’olaule’a on April 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Pukalani. Ho’olaule’a is a local style, family fun event that offers great food, entertainment, and crafts and games for the keiki (children). Baby Keiki INFANT COMMUNICATION
Understanding Your Newborn BY JADE HOLTER
W
hile babies cannot speak, they have many ways of communicating. Some of their behavior cues are clear, while others are not so easy to interpret and can easily be missed. With a little observation, parents can learn to recognize their baby’s cues, and gain confidence in their ability to soothe and care for their newborns. Infant behaviors that indicate readiness for interaction are called engagement cues. “Let’s play” signals include: staring intently at your face while holding your gaze, following your voice and tracking your face, smiling, using calm body movements and having a relaxed facial expression. Infants move between behavior states quickly. Behaviors that indicate a need for less stimulation are called disengagement cues. “I need something to be different” signals include: baby looks away, eyes open and close, sneezes, agitated movements and fussiness. Crying signals that an infant’s limits have been reached. Babies go through cycles of light and deep sleep, and both types are important for your baby’s developmental growth. Light sleep can
be recognized in babies when you see their eyes flutter, facial expressions change, smiles, and body twitches. This sleep stimulates your baby’s brain and is associated with processing and storing information. An infant sleep cycle starts with light sleep, then after about 20 minutes moves into deep sleep. Deep sleep is a good time to lay your baby down. Signs of deep sleep include: arms and legs are relaxed and floppy, little to no body movement, and staying asleep with loud noises. Deep sleep is restorative and gives your baby the energy to process information. Newborns need to feed often and have many cues to signal that they are hungry. These cues include: licking lips and sticking tongue out, sucking on hands, and moving face and mouth around (rooting reflex). Crying is a late cue, as it is usually much easier to feed your baby when he is calm. Having a baby can be a very exciting yet overwhelming time. As you get to know your baby, you will recognize her unique language and be able to intuitively respond to her needs. Jade Holter is a certified postpartum doula and certified lactation educator who works island wide making house calls for families with newborn babies. Baby Keiki MAUI FUN
Toddler Fun on Maui Maui is one of the world’s most sought after destinations. Its family-friendly activities offer countless hours of fun for toddlers and adults alike. Brianna McLain, Maui mother of two, shared her experience with raising toddlers on Maui: “Let them wander and explore a fun and safe beach or hike area. Our favorites with toddlers have been Upcountry Maui, and any beach with driftwood to imagine and play with.” Another Maui mom, April Risinger, said that she is “really looking forward to Aloha Hui Park opening in January at Keopuolani Park.” She also shared that “going to the gym helps break up the days with toddlers and refreshes me, too!” In addition to these ideas, below are more ways to have fun with your toddler on Maui: • Visit Maui Tropical Plantation. • Check out the Surfing Goat Dairy Farm. • Enjoy the Wailea Coastal Walk. • Visit a local playground with age-appropriate play equipment. • Join a mommy group. Tutu and Me and M.O.P.S. (Mothers of Preschoolers) are just two of the many mommy and me groups on Maui. • Visit the local library’s Toddler Hour each week. • Participate in an art class. Monkeypod Art & Creative Studio offers various classes for children of all ages.
• Go seashell hunting together at the beach. • Visit Iao Valley and explore the gardens. • Invite other toddler friends over for a fun kiddie dance party. • Take a toddler swim class at the public pool. • Explore the Maui Ocean Center. • Attend an outdoor family movie night at a local venue. • Watch a children’s movie together at a theater. • Visit Haleakala National Park. • Visit Leilani Farm Sanctuary. • Visit the Maui Humane Society and play with the animals. • Go rainbow hunting and see how many you can find. • Take a drive Upcountry and stop for a treat at a local cafe. • Take surf lessons together. Baby Keiki PRESCHOOL
Need Help Paying for Preschool?
T
he Preschool Open Doors (POD) program is a statewide child care program that provides subsidies to eligible low- and moderate-income families to pay preschool tuition for up to one year at any of the state’s licensed 431 preschools. The POD subsidy provides children whose families might otherwise not be able to afford preschool the opportunity to gain essential skills to be successful in school and in life. The program is operated by the Department of Human Services. To qualify, your family must meet these requirements: A) Age of Child: Priority will be for children born between August 1, 2013–July 31, 2014 who are underserved or at-risk children. Families whose children were born between August 1, 2013 and July 31, 2014 are eligible to apply for POD services.
B) Gross family Income within allowable income limits: Families are income-ranked on a sliding scale to ensure funds are distributed to those most in need. If eligible, you may still have to pay some monthly preschool costs. For the 2018–19 POD year, the Department has $11.6 million for POD subsidies. Applications must be received at the PATCH POD office during an open application period to be considered for POD services. Your child’s assistance may begin July 2018 or later, depending on your preschool’s start date, and continue through June 2019. Your child may attend any DHS licensed preschool, group child care center, or group child care home you select. Applications will be accepted through Thursday, March 29, 2018 at the PATCH POD office for the POD year beginning in July 2018. For more information or to request an application, please contact the POD office, PATCH, toll-free at 1-800-746-5620 or PODAdmin@patch-hi.org. Applications will also be available from January 2, 2018 through March 29, 2018 for downloading at http:// patchhawaii.org/programs/preschool-opendoors/.

Springtime Fun “In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.” -Margaret Atwood The sun is warmer, the skies are clearer, and the days are a bit longer. Take advantage of all that springtime has to offer, with some of these fun activities. Discover Seeds. Help your children identify which foods they eat that contain seeds. First, gather various foods such as cucumbers, grapes, pecans, sunflower seeds, strawberries, kiwi, sugar snap peas, pumpkin seeds and corn. Help them discover where the seeds are located in these foods, discuss which seeds are more difficult to find, and talk about why they can eat some seeds but not others. Plant Flowers. Spring is a wonderful time to get outside and dig in the dirt with your children. Pick up seeds or small floral plants at the local nursery, and have fun together preparing the soil or pots for the plants. You can talk about the various shapes, colors and textures of the flowers. Go on a Nature Walk. Maui offers countless free excursions to explore nature with your children. Have them bring along a journal and pencils to sketch discoveries and make notes from what they see on the walk.
Go Stargazing. Stay up past sunset with your children and go stargazing together. Find an app that explains where constellations and planets are located. Dance in the Rain. Grab some rainboots and stomp in puddles together for a refreshing outdoor activity. Make a Smoothie Bowl. Let your children select which fruits and toppings will go in their smoothie bowls. Blend it for them and let them top it with coconut flakes, seeds, banana slices and more! Play Tag. Create an outlet for some of your children’s energy by playing a game of tag together. Warning! Giggles may ensue and slow you down. JP

Ohana VOICE
What Matters to You: Listening to Your Own Voice “Be who you are and say what you feel. Because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” -Dr. Seuss According to the Oxford dictionary, an opinion is a view or judgment formed about something that is not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. There can be as many different opinions on this planet as there are people. We make internal judgments about clothes, grooming, physical appearance, behavior, language and life choices; and we do it all the time. But before you take someone else’s opinion to heart and adopt it as your own, it’s important to discern. Answering the following questions may help you gain clarity: 1. Do you admire this person? Do they have a healthy self-image? Do you love what they are all about? 2. Does this person see your authentic self? Do they support your growth as a human being and accept where you are on your journey? 3. Does this person’s taste resonate with you? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s still in your best interest to move forward carefully and consciously. Choosing the people
Maui Dream Day
who you allow to influence you, and whose judgments you take to heart, is never to be taken lightly. Be on alert if you are an empathetic or a deeply sensitive person. You may be vulnerable to molding yourself to those around you, and what they think and need. Most importantly, listen to your own voice. Only you can feel and pursue your personal truth while honoring it in those you love as well. It’s what unconditional love is all about. Choosing to purely listen to opinions can have some value. But aligning with your true calling, even when it means disregarding others’ opinions, will give you the peace and satisfaction of knowing that you followed your divine purpose and inspired others to do the same. RG
Maui Dream Day helps parents make “dreams come true” for children living on or visiting Maui. They can assist you in turning your special day or celebration into a “dream come true.” Founder and Dream Maker Darby Gill started A Keiki’s Dream over 25 years ago, which led child-directed dream days for children in crisis who live on Maui. No one knows more about all the activities available here on Maui, and he is now helping all children. In helping to set up “Dream Days” for children on Maui, Maui Dream Day ensures that a child-directed and child-centered experience fits everyone’s needs and desires. Whether it is to save you precious time or to offer the expertise that you need, they can recommend options, assist with booking, or organize the entire dream experience. They are the best children’s concierge service on Maui. There is no charge to contact them and talk story about what is available. Visit them online at http://www.mauidreamday.com.

Ohana FOOD
Healthy Eating Habits “To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art.” -François de La Rochefoucauld
H
ealthy eating habits make many New Year’s resolution lists, but many also find it challenging to stick with after a few weeks. However, by taking the steps to improve your and your family’s health through eating foods that nourish, you create an environment in which your children can understand the importance and experience the benefits of good nutrition. Training your children to eat healthy foods begins at an early age, ideally. Sometimes it can be difficult to get a toddler to eat his or her vegetables and fruits. If you share in this struggle, Brianna McLain, Maui mother of two, has an idea for getting her toddlers to try healthy food: “Put a vegetable (or two) down first,
before they eat anything else for their meal. Even if they don’t like it, have them take a bite and eventually they will get used to the flavor and having some greens before their main meal. And try different kinds of preparations. I could not believe my kids were loving a raw kale salad I found at the grocery store when I offered it to them!” More ideas for encouraging the whole family to eat healthy foods include: educating your children on where food comes from, letting them participate in the shopping and preparation process, sharing roasted vegetables with them, keeping healthy snacks handy when you are running errands, and creating a healthy self-serve snack drawer in the refrigerator with chopped veggies and fruits in snack-sized bags. By simplifying the food preparation process and by modeling healthy eating, your children will learn the importance of nourishing their bodies with good foods. JP

Ohana MINDSET
Creating a Positive Mindset W
illie Nelson said, “Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.” This doesn’t sound like rocket science, so how do you flip the switch? Changing your tune can start first thing in the morning. Set the tone by starting your day with positive affirmations, and refuse to let negative thoughts arise. If they do, go back to repeating your affirmation or statement. For example, “Today will be an awesome day.” You’ll be surprised how much your day improves. Focus on good things, however small they are. This is not a perfect world so when you encounter obstacles throughout the day, focus on what’s going right – no matter how insignificant it may seem. Stuck in traffic? Turn on your favorite podcast. Express gratitude for things in your life that you take for granted. Being thankful opens up the heart and serves as a reminder that life is nothing short of a miracle. Have an attitude of gratitude throughout your day. Find a friend in humor. In your darkest moments, allow yourself to experience humor. Just lost your job? Watch a comedy or read a funny book.
Maui Whale Festival Ma’alaea Harbor Party SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18TH // 11AM–4PM MA’ALAEA HARBOR SHOPS
Turn off your inner critic. Yes, the one with a loud voice with nothing but negative words. These words can turn into internalized feelings that lead to an inaccurate view of yourself. Drop: I’m terrible at this! Try: I’ll be better at this after I practice. Focus on the present – not on today, but rather, this exact moment. If you received an unwanted criticism from a close friend, forget it. Don’t run over it five minutes later, an hour later, the next morning, etc. Instead, focus on the present moment. In most situations, you’ll find it’s not as bad as you imagine it to be. Surround yourself with positive people. Their positive mindset will sink in and affect your own thoughts, which then will impact the words you choose, which then can impact your community. Almost anybody can cultivate a positive attitude. Positive thinking offers compounding returns, so the more often you practice it, the more benefits you will reap. We’re all tested by circumstances beyond our control. Our power lies in the control we have over our reaction to those situations. RG Celebrate Pacific Whale Foundation’s Maui Whale Festival with a fun filled day of live music, keiki activities, education, food trucks and a Made on Maui marketplace. This community event is FREE of charge and will be held at the Maui Harbor Shops on February 18th from 11am-4pm. There will be live music featuring Eric Gilliom, The Banana Slug String Band, Haiku Hillbillys, and DJ Teddy Rux! Experience up close encounters with some of Hawai‘i’s marine animals at the Critter Station hosted by the Maui Ocean Center. There will also be fun giveways, keiki activities and games to play.

Why Your Partner Should Not Be Your One & Only
M
any people spend a lot of time and energy searching for their partner in life. Once committed, what happens when that person becomes the object of their attention 24/7? Is it beneficial to make your partner your one and only? We are individual beings creating our own life journey, and forming our identity as someone else’s “other half” could be a problem. For instance, if you rely on your partner to provide you with everything you need, in times of trouble you may find you have no one else to turn to. This doesn’t mean you should make friends just for this purpose, but having a group of friends in whom you can confide can give you the breath of fresh air you need. You can then return to your partner with a lighter, reinvigorated energy. Stepping away from the main person or relationship in your life can help you appreciate them more. Taking time out allows you space

and time to reflect on what you have. This can be especially helpful when you are experiencing challenges in that particular relationship. Having interests outside of your relationship can make you a more well-rounded, grounded and interesting person. Consider taking a class such as yoga or ceramics, or anything that brings you joy. At the end of the day, when you’re reunited with your partner, you can share that spark with them. You may be surprised to see their face light up as they see you as an active, engaged person. Your interests can also spark new conversation between the two of you. Being fully rounded, complete individuals is good role modeling for your children. When they see you being active members in your community and participants in healthy relationships, it encourages them to do the same. They will see how these activities bring you joy and a sense of wellbeing. Opening up your heart and mind to the world around you allows you to create a rich and diverse life. Like a butterfly making its first flight, take a step out into the world today and see the amazing places it takes you. RG
The Maui Family Y invites you to Healthy Kids Day, a nationally celebrated event that supports the healthy growth and development of kids. This event will kick off with a Fun Run and 5K around Keopuolani Park. The day will continue with family-friendly activities conducted by community-based organizations, bike inspection by Krank Cycles, and water activities conducted by certified swim instructors. This event is sponsored by partners in the community. The celebration will serve as a platform for the Maui Family Y to showcase YMCA programs that help children achieve a healthy lifestyle, raise public awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and support community strategies to improve the health of youth and their families. How can mouth breathing influence how teeth develop? During Mouth Breathing the upper lip is raised and the lower jaw maintains an open posture. The tongue, normally placed near the roof of the mouth, is forced to drop to the floor of the mouth and protrude to allow a greater volume of air into the back of the throat. This alters the normal muscular activity of the face and jaws leading to long faces with underdeveloped lower jaws. An orthodontist is in a unique position to evaluate, diagnose and treat upper airway obstruction by influencing mid face and upper /lower jaw development where deemed deficient. However an early diagnosis and intervention is essential to prevent these undesirable effects . The largest increments of growth occur during the earliest years of life. By age four, the facial skeleton has reached 60% of its adult size, and by age 12, when most parents think of
orthodontic treatment, 90% of facial growth has already occurred. Hence the recommendation by American Association of Orthodontists ( AAOinfo.org ) for an Orthodontic screening by age 7 . Care of the developing face begins at birth; any breathing problems should be addressed as soon as they are noticed. An Airway- focused Orthodontic practice can help normalize breathing patterns , influence proper facial growth and maximize quality of life for a child. Below are a few ways to handle your gently used kids’ items on Maui. Buying and selling kids’ items on Maui can be as simple as holding an old school yard sale. If you collaborate with other families and hold a multifamily yard sale, you may draw more shoppers and boost your sales. Check craigslist.org for yard sales, and list your own online as well. Facebook groups offer another opportunity to buy and sell kids’ items. Check with the local mommy Facebook groups or the “Maui Buy and Sell” Facebook group for other places to buy and sell kids’ items. Local consignment stores, such as Droplets or Rebecca’s Closet, may receive your kids’ items and you would make a percentage from the sale of those items. If you want to donate your kids’ items on Maui, here are a couple of locations to drop off your gently used items: Goodwill and The Salvation Army. These thrift stores accept gently used tops and

bottoms and baby clothes. They also accept gently used baby and toddler footwear, stuffed animals and toys. Goodwill and The Salvation Army cannot receive infant products, including baby car seats, cribs, strollers, walkers, high chairs or swings. Another way to donate your kids’ items is through the craigslist.org “Free” section. Finally, check into local church groups and mommy clubs for children’s clothing swaps that happen throughout the year. By taking the time to sell or donate or buy gently used kids’ items, you are helping reduce your footprint on the earth. Reducing the amount of waste, especially when living on an island, helps tremendously with caring for the earth. Often times gently used items are more affordable and easier on a family’s budget, as well. So, as your children outgrow their clothing, toys and other items, consider selling or donating them here on Maui. JP
Sacred Hearts School of Lahaina invites you to join its ranks for the day! On February 27, prospective students (1st to 8th grades) can spend a day on campus as part of “Be a Student Day.” Students will spend time in the classrooms, participate in enrichment courses such as art, music or Hawaiian Studies, and mingle with current Sacred Hearts students. Attendees will be pleased to see familiar faces from their community, and meet the warm and caring teachers that make Sacred Hearts School a Lahaina treasure. At 2:30 p.m., prospective students and parents are invited to an Open House in the school’s cafeteria. This informative session will provide help with the enrollment process and allow students to meet their upcoming teacher. “Be a Student Day” is a wonderful opportunity to see the value and benefit of a Sacred Hearts School education. Please email development@shsmaui.org or call 808661-4720 to reserve your spot or for more information.

Ohana PEOPLE PLEASING
Cure Your Need to Please Are you a people pleaser? Do you find it hard to say “no”? Seeking approval from others by always saying “yes” is not uncommon. We all want to be surrounded by happy people. But if you are always accommodating other people while putting yourself aside, you may be suffering from the disease to please. With a little effort, though, this need can be released and replaced with healthier behavior. Perhaps it’s second nature for you to please other people, and you may not even realize it. This character trait or way of being in the world may be deeply rooted. Awareness is the first step towards finding a cure for the disease to please. Once you’ve admitted it, and of course forgiven yourself, get clear on boundaries. Decide what you can and cannot do given your time and energy level within a day. This requires an honest conversation with yourself. Learn to become comfortable saying “no” when you are asked to do something beyond your means. First, try responding with a kind but firm “no.” If this is difficult for you, try saying “no” and then tell the other person your reasons. Over time, when you have had enough practice saying “no”
when you mean it, you’ll reach the point where you won’t feel the need to give your reasons anymore. The ability to comfortably say “no” to people comes from the realization that it’s impossible to please everybody all the time. And trying to accomplish this impossible task can leave you feeling depleted, stressed, and even sick. Being honest with people is empowering. Not only does your self-respect start to climb, but other people’s respect for you also takes a big leap. When you start saying “no” to people, you can start saying “yes” to yourself. While you can’t control others, you can control how you decide to spend your time. Once you recognize the importance of honoring your own truth, it becomes easier to align with what is truly in your best interest. RG
The tradition continues as St. Anthony Grade School holds its annual Fun Daze Bazaar from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 14, on the Lower Main Street campus in Wailuku. A live and silent auction will be held throughout the day with hotel stays, restaurant certificates, jewelry, student baskets and quilts for bid.
St. Anthony Grade School Fun Daze Bazaar SATURDAY, APRIL 14TH // 8AM–7PM LOWER MAIN ST. CAMPUS, WAILUKU
The keiki will enjoy a variety of exciting activities such as: face painting, balloon art, Fish Pond, Stand the Bottle, Basketball Toss, Soda Toss, and the Fat Cat Game. The event also features an outstanding variety of entertainers and a Country Store filled with fresh produce, delicious baked goods, jams, jellies and flowers. Food items for sale include Judge Joe’s Laulau Plate, chow fun, Maui Tacos plate, and St. Joseph Church’s malasadas. For more information, call the St. Anthony Grade School office at 244-4976.

Ohana FOOD SAFETY
PARENTS: Take Action to Prevent Rat Lungworm
G
oing on scavenger hunts in the backyard or spending the day at the park are favorite pasttimes for many Hawaii families. As parents and caregivers, we know how important it is to keep a careful eye on our keiki as they’re playing on the ground, especially since you never know what might find a way into their mouths. This is crucial, especially with the rainy season in full swing. A Hawaii Island infant was recently diagnosed with rat lungworm disease in late 2017, after accidentally consuming a slug or snail. Caused by a parasitic roundworm, rat lungworm disease can have debilitating effects on the brain and spinal cord. It’s spread when infected rodents pass larvae of the roundworm in their feces, which are then eaten by snails and slugs. The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) reminds parents and caregivers to closely supervise children, ensuring they don’t pick up and put slugs, snails or other objects from the ground into their mouths. When eating and drinking outdoors, keep all food and beverage containers covered to keep pests from crawling in. “Children explore their world by putting objects into their mouths—it’s a natural stage of development,” said Health Director Dr. Virginia Pressler. “We have to watch what children might be playing with, and help them wash their hands using soap and clean water after playing, whether indoors or outdoors.”
People often become infected by accidentally consuming snails or slugs sometimes hidden on unwashed produce. The disease cannot be spread from person-to-person. Eliminating slugs, snails and rats in gardens and around properties can help reduce the risk for infection. Other safety tips include: • Carefully wash all produce under clean, running water, especially leafy greens. • Cook food thoroughly (boil 3-5 minutes or heat to 165° F for 15 seconds). • Cover water catchment tanks and inspect them regularly. • Don’t drink from the garden hose. Symptoms include severe headache, neck stiffness, fever, and tingling or painful skin. Children may have behavioral changes such as unusually bad temper, mood changes, or extreme tiredness. Seek immediate medical attention for such symptoms.

Our Teens NEWS • TRENDS • TIPS Maui District Television Maui District Television (MDT) produces short documentaries, live performances, and talk shows for the Hawaii State Department of Education’s television channel. Its mission is to engage, inform and inspire the community with stories from Maui County’s public elementary, middle and high schools. Some of the stories it has produced in the past include: a portrait of a King Kekaulike Junior who volunteers her time to mentor special needs students, a recap of Makawao Elementary School’s kindness celebration day, and a behind-the-scenes look at Kamalii Elementary School’s innovative STEM program. From Hana High & Elementary School to Lahainaluna, MDT does its best to give voice and recognition to the students, teachers and administrators who strive for excellence and work towards a brighter future for Maui’s keiki and our ‘aina. In addition to producing stories, MDT provides support to video classes and clubs across the county. This semester, for instance, MDT helped Maui Waena Intermediate School students create pitch videos for a video contest, and helped Baldwin High School students create professional treatments for music videos. Each
year, MDT holds its own video contest open to all intermediate and high school students in Maui County. With four different categories (animation, news, P.S.A., and short film) and three different skill levels, twelve students have a chance to win $1,000 for their media class, which goes towards funding new equipment for the students. Past submissions can be viewed at www.digital808storytellers.com. As media and communication continues to evolve, so does MDT. In addition to cable channel 356 (if you have a cable box) and digital channel 27.56 (if your cable feeds directly into your TV), you can now watch stories on the Maui District Television Facebook page, and go behind the scenes via Instagram @ mauidistricttelevision. Feel free to send MDT a message on social media – they welcome your questions, comments, suggestions or leads. Maui District Television encourages you to be involved, and to help them continue to tell Hawaii’s great public education story!

Kupuna Caregivers Program Helping working caregivers pay for support services for older adults.
Working caregivers who pay for services to support their kupuna may now be eligible for financial help up to $70 per day to cover the costs of adult day care, chore services, homedelivered meals, homemaker services, personal care, respite, or transportation. The Hawaii Executive Office on Aging (EOA) is launching the state’s Kupuna Caregivers Program, which was signed into law earlier this year by Governor David Ige to help Hawaii’s working caregivers. “The landmark initiative is a first step in recognizing the significant contributions and sacrifices of Hawaii’s working caregivers as they celebrate and honor their kupuna,” said Governor Ige. “Support for our caregivers is critically needed as Hawaii’s population is aging more rapidly than the national average, and our seniors live longer than seniors in any other state.” Under Act 102, qualified caregivers who apply for the program may receive up to $70 per day in services (subject to the availability of funds and paid directly to contracted service providers, not the caregiver). To be eligible, caregivers must be employed at least 30 hours per week by one or more employer(s); and they must provide direct care to a care recipient who is a citizen of the U.S. or a qualified alien, 60 years of age or older, and not covered by any comparable government or private home and community-based care service, except Kupuna Care services. The care recipient cannot reside in a long-term care facility and must have impairments of at least two activities of daily living, or two instrumental activities of daily living, or one activity of daily living and one instrumental activity of daily living, or substantive cognitive impairment requiring substantial supervision.
“We are hopeful that this program will provide working caregivers with the opportunity to continue working, and with peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are safe and are receiving services and supports that maximize their independence and quality of life,” said Terri Byers, director of the Hawaii Executive Office on Aging. “EOA is looking forward to analyzing the data we collect during this first six-month pilot period to evaluate demand for services, provider capacity, and how effective the program is in helping caregivers retain employment and ease financial burden.” Interested caregivers should contact the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) as soon as possible to apply for the program. Program funding is limited to a total of $600,000 available until June 30, 2018, unless a subsequent appropriation is made by the Hawaii State Legislature. Applying for the program includes employment verification, assessment of the care recipient, and a caregiver burden assessment. For further information or to apply, call the ADRC statewide phone number at (808) 643-2372, ADRC TTY line at (808) 643-0899, or visit http:// www.hawaiiadrc.org.
