Our Keiki News • Trends • Tips Fun Ways to Keep Your Child Learning This Summer “I’m bored!” is the collective phrase echoed by children across the land during many a summer break. While a little boredom is healthy for children, with some planning and creativity it is possible to help your child find activities that are fun and educational, making the most of those long summer days. Plant a garden. Get outside together and plant seeds or small plants, then watch them grow! As your child helps care for the plants she will be learning about science and the environment. Assemble and decorate a bird feeder from a craft store. This activity helps children read and follow instructions, as well as be creative. Volunteer. Older children can learn responsibility by volunteering outside the home, serving food at a soup kitchen or babysitting for a neighbor. Younger children can help around the house by taking care of the family pet or assisting with other household chores.

Take a vacation. Show your child how to read a map and help him or her calculate how many miles it will take to get to your destination. If you are driving, perhaps he or she can calculate how many gallons of gas it will take to get there. Your child can research the destination at the library and on the Internet, then share what he or she learned with the family. Write a travel journal. Wherever you travel over the summer – whether it’s just in town or out of state – show your child how to keep a travel journal. He can write down favorite memories, include postcards from the locations visited, and share various facts in the journal. Learn a practical skill. Perhaps you can share with your child a practical skill, such as doing laundry, making a favorite family recipe, or keeping up with finances. Ask your kids for their opinion: what new skill would they like to learn; how would they like to spend time with you; what would they like to create? Then ask yourself, what would you like to teach them? Learning during the summertime is a great way to keep the boredom blues away! JP

8. Go watch the sunrise at Haleakala, then take a nap in the afternoon. 9. Enjoy some pool time at your local public pool. 10. Swim like a fish at the beach and eat a lot of shave ice. Have another event or fun idea? Share it with us at Facebook.com/MauiFamily. SB Travel back in time 125 years as we honor the heritage of the Holy Ghost Church’s Feast, a tradition born from the generosity of Queen Elizabeth of Portugal. The shape of the Kula church, built by the Portuguese who settled there in the 19th century, is said to represent the eight-sided crown of the queen. Celebrating the old and the new, come enjoy a special historical pop-up museum (new this year), featuring past Queens, story telling, and timelines on display. The annual event includes a livestock auction, a live auction, entertainment by Frank De Lima and Napua Greig-Nakasone (plus others), games, a keiki zone, baked goods, ono food, a farmers’ market, jams and jellies, flowers and plants, crafts and more. The complimentary Queen’s Meal will be served on Sunday from 11am to 12:30pm. The event is free to the public. The historic octagonal church is located at 4300 Lower Kula Road in Waiakoa, Kula. Our Keiki Tantrums

Tantrums: What Do They Communicate & What Should You Do? By KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.

T

antrums are a form of communication that indicate an overload state and have varying underpinnings. A tantrum can be due to a physiological reason and may simply mean your child is overwhelmed. The primary culprits are fatigue, hunger, change in diet, coming down with an illness or a change in medication. Most of us have probably experienced at least one of these ourselves. The goal is to help your child calm and proactively plan for prevention. Tantrums can also be a result of emotional stressors such as a change in routine, positive stressors (i.e. visitors, an exciting trip) or negative stressors (i.e. strife in your household, a low test score). These underlying reasons for overload may not be apparent and the goal is to help your child calm, and later, to process what may be going on under her big emotions. A cozy space provides a safe place to calm and have a “break”. Tantrums can also be the result of your child having learned that this is an effective way to get attention and/or something he wants. This is absolutely normal in some stages of development as your child seeks to find your

‘boundaries’. In these cases, it is important to set a reasonable boundary and calmly stick to it. Your consistency will send the message that no matter how big the tantrum, you are sticking to what you said. Once a child knows the boundary, tantrums will usually decrease. Tantrums can also be the result of a child having difficulty with her own ability to self-regulate (calm her self). The child who is more sensitive or anxious is more easily upset by small events not going as expected. The highly active child is already in an elevated state much of the time and small things may send him into a tantrum with seemingly little provocation. A child who has a hard time verbalizing around her emotions is more likely to act out her big emotions. A tantrum is one way your child communicates and your goal is to support your child to regulate and process feelings verbally rather than through behavior. Be consistent. Help your child anticipate and make a “plan B”. Help your child to self-calm. Strengthen your child’s ability to verbalize around the experiences that occur each day. Our Keiki SUMMER READING

The Importance of Reading to Your Keiki By Jessica Gleason Bookmobile Librarian Wailuku Public Library “The fire of literacy is created by the emotional sparks between a child, a book, and the person reading.” -Mem Fox, Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever Talking, singing, playing and reading out loud are keys to building strong bonds with your child and nurturing a lifelong love of reading and learning. While a child is still in utero, parents can start the bonding and learning process. It’s never too early to start! Reading out loud and as a family, has numerous benefits. Here are just a few: Creates strong bonds – The importance of emotional bonding early on in a child’s life cannot be overemphasized. Reading together is one way to reinforce those bonds. Children love to have the full attention of their parents, and parents need time to slow down and be fully present with their children. All the stresses and worries of the day can be set aside as you enjoy reading together.

Contributes to the comfort of routine and ritual – Children thrive on routine. Bedtime stories, regular trips to the library, and family reading time (‘screen-free’ time) are all rituals essential to developing memories, habits and traditions that nurture a lifelong reader. Lays the foundation for children to read on their own – According to award-winning author and literacy expert Mem Fox, children need to hear 1,000 stories before they can begin learning to read themselves! Fox recommends an “ideal of three stories a day – one favorite, one familiar, and one new,” though any reading that is fun and engaging for both parent and child will do. Fosters empathy and understanding – Reading gives children the ability to see the world through another’s eyes, to safely explore topics and situations that may seem scary or overwhelming, and to be able to articulate their own feelings and those of others. The main objective when reading together is to have fun! Visit your local public library or the Holoholo Bookmobile for inspiration and encouragement. While there, sign up the whole family for the HSPLS 2017 Summer Reading Program and enjoy free reading incentives and activities. Happy reading!

Our Keiki Swimming

Learning to Swim Helping your child learn how to swim can be a challenge. However, by keeping it fun and lighthearted, you may be able to give him or her the confidence needed to conquer this life skill. By incorporating swimming games that slowly build skills upon each other, you may assess your child’s comfort level in water and increase his or her comfort level with each new skill. First, see how closely your child will put his face in the water. If he is timid about it, try using a floating toy or ping pong ball and see how far he can blow it across the water. Once this skill is completed, then see if your child will blow bubbles in the water. He can pretend to be a fish blowing bubbles, or ask him to see how much noise he can make by blowing bubbles in the water. These games will hopefully lead to your child feeling comfortable with his face in the water. Another way to help your child learn to swim is to have her hold onto the side of the pool wall and kick her legs, keeping them straight as she kicks. Once she is comfortable with that method, she can use a kickboard with you holding her in front for added support. When

your child is ready to incorporate her arms, a fun way to describe it is to have her pretend she is scooping up ice cream with her hands cupped. So, she can ‘kick, kick, kick’ her legs, and scoop her ice cream with her arms outstretched above her head. Pushing off the pool wall is a fun swimming exercise that allows the child to experience moving through the water. You can make it exciting by asking him or her to pretend to be a rocket shooting across the pool. However you choose to help your child learn how to swim, safety is essential. Adults need to supervise children when in or around water; and children need to heed pool rules and learn about ocean safety, such as staying aware of riptides, changing currents and weather. JP

Alexander Academy Performing Company will present Once Upon a Time: Storybook Dances on June 3–4 at Seabury Hall’s ‘A’ali’ikuhonua Creative Arts Center. Alexander Academy faculty’s original choreography will recreate onstage several beloved storybook tales such as Thumbelina, Peter Pan, and even Harry Potter! An excerpt from the ballet Les Sylphides and solos from graduating seniors will round out the performances. “This end-of-season production is the highlight of the year for our dancers, and we are proud of what we present and thankful for the support we receive from our audiences,” said Executive Director Danelle Watson. General Admission: $15 adults, $10 keiki (ages 2–12). VIP seats: $25 adults, $18 keiki. Tickets are on sale at: www.storybookdances.brownpapertickets.com. Make the Most of Lazy Summer Days

S

ummer can get packed with a lot of fun things to do, but nothing beats a lazy summer day. Here are 10 ways to make the most of a lazy summer day. 1. Have a picnic under a tree. Bring food, drinks, a blanket and book to read aloud. 2. Go to the beach all day long. Pack lots of sunscreen and snacks. 3. Go for a bike ride. 4. Make tents out of sheets, either indoors or out. 5. Get crafty with things you can find around the house.

6. Make homemade lemonade and then let the kids sell it at a lemonade stand. 7. Splash around outside using the hose. Even better, grab some water balloons and let the kids have at it. 8. Let the kids “paint” your fence using only water and paintbrushes. When the water dries and disappears, they can start all over again. 9. Read, read, read. Head to the library and let the kids all choose their books. Then do a read-a-thon at home. 10. Invite friends over. Have a play date with other parents and kids. The kids will entertain each other while the moms and dads can catch up. SB

Baby Keiki News • Trends • Tips Sing to Your Baby “Music is the greatest communication in the world. Even if people don’t understand the language that you’re singing in, they still know good music when they hear it.” -Lou Rawls Communicating with your baby through song creates a special bond between the two of you. It makes no difference whether you have a ‘good’ singing voice or not; your baby will simply enjoy hearing you sing. Babies of all ages can benefit from hearing you sing, as even day-old infants are able to distinguish the difference between various rhythms, according to PsychologyToday.com. You may even start singing to your baby while you are pregnant, as babies in utero are able to process auditory signals at about 25 weeks. If your baby has older siblings, it may be fun to involve them by letting them choose a song to sing to the baby during the pregnancy. Then once the baby is born that can be their ‘special song.’ Along with strengthening your relationship, singing also lays a strong foundation for your baby’s language skills. Learn a few lullabies or nursery rhymes to share with your baby. Songs of the culture carry with them the melodies and inflections of the mother tongue, laying the foundation for the child to speak the language as he or she develops. Singing can soothe your baby, and help improve his or her mood as well. For instance, if your baby gets upset while you are driving

Join a Hui in Your Neighborhood!

in the car, you can sing a calming song to help ease the discomfort. Also, songs to prepare your baby for transitions helps make life feel more predictable. You can have a song for waking up, coming to eat, going to sleep, etc. Choose a song to sing to your baby for bedtime, and your baby may associate this with calm and relaxation. Talking to your baby in a sing-song voice is beneficial, too. Make up lyrics as you go throughout the day. Hold your baby and use your sing-song voice to tell him or her about the world around, or about what you are doing. Music in general is wonderful for a baby’s development. However, live singing has been shown to be even more beneficial than recorded music. So regardless of your singing capabilities, why not try it today? And while you are at it, throw in some dancing, too. Then your baby will be learning about communication and coordination in a powerful (and fun) way! JP

Looking for support, socialization, activities and strategies for prenatal to preschool-aged keiki? Family Hui Hawaii is here for you, in your neighborhood, with your peers. Families with young children are invited to join a Hui in your neighborhood! The Family Hui Program coordinates parenting support groups that allow families and children to come together and learn about child development and mindful parenting strategies. Groups are led by a trained peer facilitator and meet once per week for 12 weeks, in the community where they reside. With a demand for more groups, the Family Hui is seeking Group Leaders to train in Lahaina, Kahului and Upcountry. Join a Hui! at www.familyhuihawaii.org or call Michelle O’Byrne at 281-8687.

Baby Keiki labor tips

Not-So-Secrets For a Great Birth By Sky Connelly LM, CPM

P

eople are always asking, “How do I get through labor?” They want to know about the latest fad that will magically make their labor effortless and easy. First, labor is hard work; that’s why it’s called labor. That doesn’t mean that it can’t still be an amazing experience. Luckily, getting the body, mind and spirit ready for birth doesn’t require a lot of newfangled equipment or airy-fairy remedies. All that’s needed is P.E.N. – Preparation, Exercise and Nutrition! Preparation: Do research – learn about the stages of labor, practice some coping techniques, and get an idea of what might happen in case things don’t go as planned. Most likely, this means taking a quality childbirth education class. Find a class taught by an independent teacher that is several weeks long. Exercise: Laboring and birthing a baby is some of the hardest physical work a human body can do. No one would run a marathon or climb Mt. Everest without training first. The same goes for labor. Walking 30 minutes a day is a great way to prepare for labor; in fact, it’s one of the best ways. Swimming, yoga, pilates, and other gentle to moderate exercises are all great for labor and birth preparation, too. Nutrition: This can’t be stressed enough! The body can only perform as well as it’s treated. Eating poorly will give poor results. Baby will always get all of his or her needs met; it’s the pregnant parent who will suffer if nutrients

are lacking. Eating whole foods, getting 2–5 servings of veggies each day, and avoiding processed or fast foods will go a long way toward making sure labor and birth go as smoothly as possible. The eating plans that tend to be most successful are those that are rooted in thinking differently about food. Many families are successful eating an Ayurvedic diet, a strictly whole foods diet, a Mediterranean diet, or using a Paleo-type plan. When people really focus on these three areas during their pregnancy, results are seen time and time again. They are better prepared for labor and birth, and they have an easier time in the postpartum. It’s really that simple!

Baby Keiki tantrums

Turn Your Toddler’s “NO!” into “YES!” I know it seems like your toddler says “no” to everything all of a sudden, but don’t worry – you don’t have a little Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde on your hands. If you turn on your “toddler translator”, you’ll start to decipher what he really means. Sometimes no means, “yes, but first I want to finish my snack.” Or: “yes, but I just like to say no sometimes (plus I love the look on your face when you get all bent out of shape, Mom and Dad).” Or: “yes, but as a toddler I am irresistibly driven to say no - so yes, but no.” Confused? So is she. See, the job of a 2-year-old is to gain some independence. But it’s scary to be independent – he feels safer when he has some control – and when he knows the limits. And limits are all about no. So your toddler’s no is usually her way of talking herself through a new, scary situation – or one in which he feels out of control. What’s an exasperated parent to do? Give her as much control as is reasonable. Limit her to 1 or 2 options, at this age. Plan ahead for prevention. Expect that he’ll give you more trouble when he’s tired, sick, or hungry.

Give her a warning when the environment is about to change, so she can make the transition. “We’re getting ready to put on our sunscreen and go to the beach in a couple of minutes!” When he melts down, let him vent. Empathize. “I know you don’t want to go now, Honey. I know you want to stay and eat candy. No candy today, I know you want candy. Yes, I know.” If he believes that you really understand him, he’s more likely to go along with you once he has blown off some steam. Don’t be afraid to set the limit when it’s necessary. Children who have fewer limits tend to have more trouble when they grow up. Find the right balance between wishy-washy and rigid. And finally: Don’t take it personally. She’s just a shrimpy little thing – don’t let her ruin your day. Breathe! Remember these tips so that you can turn your toddler’s no – into yes!

How to Live in Your Sweet Spot

H

ave you been there? You know, that ‘sweet spot’ where everything is flowing nicely; things are in alignment; you are settled, humbled, happy and content. When you’re there, do you take the time to notice and appreciate it? At one time or another, we’ve all probably been in this sweet spot where things just work. Here’s how to experience more moments like this, and enjoy and appreciate them. Live in the moment Most sweet spots are experienced when we’re content, happy, and involved with what we’re doing in the moment. When you ‘live in the now,’ you are focused on the present moment.

Your mind isn’t worrying about tomorrow or yesterday; it’s here and now and you are 100% involved with your present surroundings. So many times we have to juggle many things throughout the day. But when you invite some space into your day (such as stopping to take a few moments of silence), it’s easier to get to your sweet spot. Listen to your gut We all have that tiny voice inside of us that knows which path to follow. When we listen to it, all can go smoothly; and other times when we ignore it and try to please others, we may find that things shift out of alignment and our sweet spot is nowhere to be found. Try to listen to your intuitive voice more often. Practice the art of “no” Saying “no” to something that doesn’t serve you or that will actually drain you, is okay. When you take the time to realize that something isn’t a must-do, it allows room for more of those that are. And there you can be in your sweet spot. SB

Hiking & Camping in Hana “We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” -Jawaharlal Nehru

Anyone who lives on or travels to Maui knows they must see the beauty of Hana, even if just for a day. From jungle hikes to fresh fruit farm stands to cascading waterfalls, a mini-trip to Hana can be the quintessential escape from the stresses of life. Hiking and camping in Hana with a family requires planning and preparation. Here are a few tips for families interested in hiking and camping on Maui’s east side. Hikes in Hana vary in difficulty. Diligently research weather conditions and hike paths prior to leaving. Flash flooding can occur without much warning, so if it’s raining you may want to save your hike for another day.

Pipiwai Trail is recommended, as you may make it as easy or difficult as necessary for you and your family. The trail offers cascading waterfalls, a bamboo forest and jungle paths to fulfill your Hawaii-loving dreams. Be sure to keep your little ones near you at all times, and avoid side trails to stay on the safer side. For the camping enthusiasts here are a couple of options in Hana. Wai’ānapanapa State Park offers coastal views, black lava sand, tidal caves, hiking and native plants. If camping is not for you, there are 12 cabins to rent. Be aware that you must reserve a cabin in advance, however. Visit http://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/parks/maui/ waianapanapa-state-park/ to make reservations or find out more information. Another camping spot in Hana is the Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park. This area offers a drive-up campground, but be advised that it is typically wet and weather conditions can be difficult. You must bring your own camping supplies, tent, food and water, as it is far from many amenities. The good news is that permits are not required to camp, but you must pay the park entry fee. Visit https://www.nps. gov/hale/planyourvisit/kipahulu.htm for more information. If you choose to hike or camp in Hana, remember to respect the land and take your trash out when you leave. And lean on the side of caution as your family explores the wild beauty of Maui. JP

Parenting with Presence BY TANyA GABrIEL, mA

W

e all want to be the best possible parents to our keiki. Here are some tips that you can start implementing with yourself and your keiki to connect and uplift. self-care first. The airline pre-flight safety speech always says to put on your oxygen mask first, before assisting another person. This same concept applies in parenting. Fill up your ‘fuel tank’ first (i.e., with a hot bath, workout, nap, etc.), then take care of your ohana. Find some way to connect with your needs each day, and you will have more of your best self to give to your keiki. Eye-level. Get down to eye-level with your keiki as often as you can. When they see you eyeto-eye, keiki feel safer and more connected. Having to look up at you all day, especially if you are upset with your keiki, can feel scary and intimidating. So meet your keiki at their eyelevel whenever you engage with them.

Quality time. Keiki thrive when they get oneon-one time with each parent or caregiver. The idea is to give your keiki your undivided attention (without electronics, siblings or interruptions) for some period of time to be present with their needs. The amount of quality time suggested for each age group is: • 0–3 - at least 30 minutes/day • 4–6 - 20 minutes/day • 7–10 - 15 minutes/day • 11 and up - 10 minutes/day Positive self-talk. You are doing your very best. Parenting can, at times, be a difficult and thankless job; so remember to say to yourself that you are doing well. There are a thousand different ways to parent, and you are doing it right! Look into a mirror and say out loud right now, “I am a great parent. I am doing my best. I am doing it right!” Tanya Gabriel has a master’s degree in counseling psychology and specializes in mindfulness instruction, group meditation, and positive parenting. For more information please call (855) 968-9731, ext 808, or e-mail Tanya@MindfulLivingGroup.org.

MAPA’s 2017 Summer Musical Theatre Camp culminates in eight public performances of Disney’s Mulan Jr., July 21–23 and 28–30 at the ‘A’ali’ikuhonua Creative Arts Center, Seabury Hall, Makawao. Disney’s Mulan Jr. brings ancient China to life with hit songs and a story packed with action, humor and heart. When the Huns invade, it is up to the misfit Mulan and her mischievous dragon sidekick, Mushu, to save the Emperor. Mulan takes up arms and disguises herself as a boy to spare her father from serving in the army. The battle with the Huns approaches, and Mulan must choose between revealing her true identity as a girl or saving all of China. For tickets and more information, visit http://mauiacademy.org/.

How to Disagree: Sage Advice During Challenging Times “Friendship that insists upon agreement on all things isn’t worth the name.” -Mahatma Gandhi

W

e all have different upbringings, backgrounds, and insights to the world. So we can’t all agree all of the time. And disagreement can be good! It can teach us compromise, open our minds to a different point of view, and help shape our own ideas. So what happens when you and your partner, friends, or children disagree? How can you handle it without it turning into a bigger problem or issue? Follow these three steps to transform your disagreement: 1. Communicate When a disagreement comes up, don’t let it simmer and stew, only to erupt later. Instead, communicate about it. Share your point of view and listen to the other person’s point of view. Don’t talk over one another; really hear what the other person has to say. If talking isn’t working, try writing down your thoughts and then going down the list, with the rule that you each take turns and truly listen to the other.

2. Listen This is the biggest part of step number one. While the other person is talking, don’t be thinking about how you can respond. Truly take in what the other person is saying; try to understand where they’re coming from and what’s important to them. If it’s easier, read what they wrote rather than listen to them speak. 3. Empathy One of the greatest things we can teach our children and that we can show by example, is to be empathetic. That means “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” To be empathetic is to be human. Once you, or your children, are able to understand and share the feelings others feel, it can really help combat disagreements. It’s no longer about who is right; it’s about understanding each other, and then coming to some agreement that feels fair to you both. Communicating, listening and empathizing can bring a breath of fresh air to any relationship when a disagreement arises. Teaching your children these three key things will help them as they encounter disagreements in life. SB

Father’s Day Gifts Dads Really Want When it comes to Father’s Day gifts, you can keep it simple with these easy and fun ideas. For the surfer dad - get him some surf wax, a new towel, and time at the beach. Make him coupons for surf breaks to take throughout the year. He’s sure to love the intentional gift of free time. Personalize your gift by getting him a “World’s Best Surfer Dad” towel. For the fisherman dad - get him a new fishing pole or cooler, and a gift certificate to the store or bait shop. You can also make him coupons for free time to go fishing, that he can cash in at his pleasure. Personalize your gift by getting him a custom-made cold drink koozie. For the golfer dad - get him a round of golf at his favorite course on Maui. Personalize your gift with engraved golf balls or a golf towel. Can We Really Make a Difference? BY sTEPHANIE HELBusH

B

rian Hill and Keith Scherdt of Haiku had reservations about becoming resource caregivers (aka, foster parents) for children in foster care. Foster care is temporary; the goal is reunification. Given this, they wondered whether they could really make a difference in a child’s life in a short period of time. They decided to give it a try, and Brian and Keith were licensed in 2010. They have provided a home to nine children. All but two were reunified with their families. The shortest placement was ten months, the longest two and a half years. Their first placement was a sibling group of two boys, ages 12 and 4. The 12-year-old had severe behavioral issues, but Brian and Keith were against putting him in a self-contained classroom. They convinced the school to give them time to work on it. At the end of the 10-month placement, the boy could control his behavior and was out of all special education classes. Brian and Keith are still in contact with the family, and the boy just sent them his college acceptance letter. As with other children who have been placed in their home, these brothers still call and want to be a part of their lives. Brian says, “You have to go into this understanding that if they leave you, it’s a good thing. If their families can solve their issues and

get their kids back, that’s a good thing.” Brian and Keith have had good relationships with the children and their families. They’ve had kids who applied for jobs and asked them to be references, and birth parents who have called asking for help. They’ve had the opportunity to be a resource to the children and to their families – the true meaning of being a ‘resource caregiver.’ “People have to remember that kids are in foster care because they’ve been abused, neglected, abandoned. Foster kids get a negative stereotype that they’re bad kids. They’re not. They’ve just seen and been through things they never should have. Bad behaviors are learned and they can change. Amazing what a little bit of stability and consistency can do for a child.” So it turns out that the answer is yes. Yes, you can make a difference in a child’s life, even if it is just for a moment in time.

If you are interested in becoming a resource caregiver to children in foster care on Maui, call Hui Ho’omalu at (808) 268-5122 or visit www.pidf.org.

Top Wishes for Mother’s Day

m

other’s Day should really be all year round, right? But how amazing is it that one day a year, everyone (and their mama!) salutes moms who put their kiddos first, who sacrifice a warm cup of coffee day after day to take care of their ohana, and who love every minute of it. Need some ideas on how to celebrate the mom in your life? Choose one, or all, of these ideas below and the mom in your life is sure to feel loved and extra appreciated this Mother’s Day. Get salty Here on beautiful Maui, the beach is always a great bet for Mother’s Day. Make it extra special by bringing a picnic for the whole family along with a flower lei or lei po’o for mom. Create your own little cabana and have cold drinks, yummy eats and music. Maybe get mom a new swimsuit or cool round towel for a present.

Dream Imua

While at the beach, take photos, collect driftwood, shells and seaglass, and then pop the picture and goodies into a shadow box frame to remember the day. relaxation time Send mom to the spa for a facial or massage. Most spas on island offer all-day use of their facilities when you pay for a service. A manicure and pedicure are equally relaxing if mom can’t get away all day. Top it off with a nice family lunch or early dinner. Give the gift of photos Let’s face it; most of the time it’s mom who’s taking the picture, which means she isn’t in many of them. Flip the camera and take some family pictures, either by a professional photographer or friend, or on your own using a timer. Then make sure you print them out and get some framed. So many times photos get stuck online or in our phones. Photos mom can hang on her wall are sure to be treasured. (Pssst, if you’re a mama, leave the magazine open to this page on your coffee table and send a little clue to the family!) JP

Dream Imua is modeled after national wish-fulfilling programs for children. The program provides a dream day to children between the ages of 4 and 16 who face a crisis of any nature: abuse, neglect, homelessness, medical or psychological issues, personal loss or family difficulties. Qualified social services programs and professionals refer eligible children to Dream Imua. Children who come to Dream Imua are interviewed to determine their interests, passions, and wishes. With the support of the Maui Community, a Dream Day is created specific to each child’s unique personality. This child-directed approach not only offers a reprieve from suffering, but validates the child’s self-worth, sending positive messages of support and encouragement. Dream Imua now serves more than 75 children each year, and has facilitated more than 1,400 dream days since it began in 1990 (formerly called “A Keiki’s Dream”).

MENTORING Opportunities for Maui Teens to Give Back By Yvonne Manupuna, LMFT

I

n working with adolescents, I see that parents sometimes get frustrated that their teen has developed an entitled and ungrateful perspective on life. Often times, though, these young people have not been given the opportunity to serve and give back to their community. There is no better way to learn and experience gratitude and service, than to give one’s time and resources to helping others. As we enter into the summer months and your teen takes a 3-month hiatus from academic life, explore some of these opportunities on Maui that can allow your teenager to give back. Maui Youth & Family Services Project Venture Mentoring Program The first is a mentoring program offered by the Project Venture prevention team at Maui Youth and Family Services. This opportunity allows adolescents ages 15-17 to pair up with middle school students ages 11-14, and to role model working through challenges that often come up during this developmental phase. The staff has organized weekly activities designed to encourage the teen and middle schooler to build

a bond and develop a trusting relationship. The teen mentors the youth in areas such as effective communication, discovering their strengths, and community involvement. Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Maui The Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Maui community-based program also offers opportunities for youth to give back. In a group setting, high school-aged youth mentor elementary-aged youth during after school hours. Mentors, also known as “Bigs,” engage their mentees, or “Littles,” in homework help, games and various activities. Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui The Maui Boys and Girls Club has several clubhouses around the island to include: Central Maui, Lahaina, Makawao, Haiku, Paukukalo and Kahili Terrace. Teens are encouraged to volunteer to help staff with activities, organize community service opportunities, provide tutoring, and mentor younger youth. Clubhouses are open during the week, Monday through Friday, until about 7pm (depending on the clubhouse). Yvonne Manupuna is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist at Ohana Wellness Maui LLC. She has been working with Maui families for almost 9 years. Her specialty is in working with Maui teens and their families to navigate the challenges of adolescence. Community Children’s Councils

Community Children’s Councils of Maui continues to support and sponsor the children’s art program each year with art supplies. We would like to extend a big MAHALO to them and the administration in making this contribution consistent. The art program has evolved and now accomodates adults with disabilities. They are planning a future art show and ARTASTIC club. Building bridges and connecting people to opportunities is a direct result of this program.
