WATER GAMES TO BEAT THE HEAT When the summer heat turns up, head outdoors for some ‘cool’ and refreshing fun with good old-fashioned water. Double check that there’s no water restriction in your area first! Once you’ve got the clear, turn on the hose and let the party begin.

9 | www.mauifamilymagazine.com

Our Keiki WATER GAMES Splash Hide and Seek

Materials: water-filled balloons The seeker gets to use two or three water balloons to drench the hiders when they're found.
To avoid anyone getting hurt, also consider the water balloon bucket toss. It’s safe and can be good practice for hand-eye coordination. One person can catch and one person can throw. Or make two teams and see which can toss the most water balloons into a bucket without bursting them.

Soggy Sponges

Materials: sponges
Sponges can be used as an alternative to water balloons. Make sure they are the cheap kind, and that they have sponge on both sides and no abrasive padding. Clean up is quicker than burst water balloons, too! Include a bucket and you can play “Fill the Bucket,” where participants soak up a sponge in a bucket full of water and then run it to an empty bucket that they have to fill before anyone else.

Water Limbo

Ball Blast

Materials: a hose Water Limbo uses a stream of water from the hose instead of a bar. Each kid takes a turn going underneath the water at the designated height. Lower the hose each round until there is a winner.

You Might Need...

Materials: rope, or something comparable to section off grass; hose; and balls of different sizes Section off a square piece of grass and place balls of different sizes inside this section. Players use a water stream from the hose to move balls out of the square within a given time period.

Feet Freeze

Materials: a kiddie pool; waterproof toys/ objects; and ice Fill a toddler pool with water and ice. Place a variety of waterproof toys or objects in the water. Players have to remove as many objects as they can using only their feet. The player who removes the most objects, wins.

Freeze

Materials: music player; and a sprinkler Turn the sprinkler and music on, and let kids splash and dance around to the music. As soon as the sprinkler gets turned off, players must freeze. The last one to freeze is “out” until the next round. Help your kids and their friends be the coolest, happiest kids on the block by creating some water-filled fun this summer. RG

Our Keiki SUMMER FUN

et’s face it -- for your kids, the summer holiday means nothing but fun, fun, fun. But if you’re out of fresh ideas to entertain them and boredom is setting in, here are seven sensational suggestions! Host an Open Mic Night Invite your teens to hold an open mic night. It can be theme-based, such as poetry, comedy, music, or a variety. To make sure every performer gets the same stage time, keep performances to a specified time. To kick things up a gear, fun costumes can be worn, too. Hold a Clothes Swap Say goodbye to unwanted, unworn clothes and make room for new ones. Tell your kids to invite their friends to bring over their clothes, put them in a big pile, and shop for their new wardrobe. If there’s still a pile at the end of the night, take the leftovers to your local thrift store. Learn to Cook 3 New Meals Well Create three new menus and practice making them with your children. Include an appetizer, main course and dessert -- all carefully prepared with high quality ingredients. Your family will appreciate your new creation.

2nd Annual 'Aha Mauliola SATURDAY, AUGUST 10TH // 10AM–3PM UH MAUI COLLEGE CAMPUS

Sleep Under the Stars Check the weather forecast and select a warm, dry, and clear night to sleep outdoors. Pique your kids’ interest by asking them to point out as many constellations as they can. Create Bubble Wrap Art With bubble wrap and neon paints, create a truly unique art impression. Your kids could make bookmarks, an art piece for the wall, or wrapping paper with these prints! Get organized early for Christmas cards and birthday cards, so when the occasion arises your unique cards are ready. Take a Trip to the Local Farmer’s Market Gather your baskets and head out to your local farmer’s market. Use this opportunity to explain to your kids the importance of farm-totable meals and supporting local farmers. Have a Countryside Picnic Shop for your favorite summer foods and head to the country for an old-fashioned picnic. Don’t forget seasonal produce such as strawberries, watermelon and mangoes to give your outing a real summer feel. The long summer holiday doesn’t need to feel long and boring. With a few simple activities, kids can get creative, learn new things, and have fun all at the same time. RG

Our Keiki NATURE

Easy Gardening with Your Keiki Gardening as a family is a fun way to be outdoors together, and it can also spark your keiki’s imagination. The size of your garden does not matter; you can garden even if you have a small space. To get started, here are a few ideas: Recycle the Sandbox Transform the old sandbox into a garden bed. This creates a sense of ‘ownership’ of a familiar space and encourages a sense of responsibility to the gardening project. Make sure the garden bed has good sunlight and the soil is free of tree roots. Equipping your keiki with his very own materials, such as watering bucket and gloves, can be a great incentive, too! Start an Herb Garden These are ideal for kids because they're easy to create; and they're great for you because they provide flavorful ingredients for your family's meals. Start them from seed, or use transplant starters from your local nursery. Seeds provide a useful visual lesson about where our food begins, too. Give those seeds a bit of soil, lots of sunlight and water, and enjoy! Give Your Keiki Containers Allow your keiki some creative freedom. A fun kid-friendly idea is a pizza planter. Grow oregano, basil, thyme, peppers, and any other

container-friendly pizza topping -- all in one bucket. Your keiki will enjoy heading to her very own garden for the ingredients of her choice. Decorate a plant pot or find a red container, and grow strawberries from starters. They’re a good introduction to gardening and most keiki love them. Make a Scarecrow If you find your keiki doesn’t have a green thumb after all, don’t lose hope! Suggest making a scarecrow. The added motivation for keeping birds away from plants they have helped to grow, might help them plant in the first place! Get some fresh air as a family and explore together what you can create in your garden. Kids can learn about the value of food, and they can feel helpful and productive at the same time. Head to your garden and dig in! RG

Volunteers on Vacation Volunteers on Vacation is a free program offered by Pacific Whale Foundation to help you easily find meaningful service projects to benefit Maui’s environment. Visitors and residents can spend a few hours giving back to the local community while enjoying access to “off the beaten trail” sites and learning about the history and natural ecosystem of the area. For example, every 1st and 3rd Saturday you can join PWF’s certified naturalist and Haleakalā Park staff to remove invasive plant species and help with other projects to preserve the park’s native ecosystem. Our Keiki THRIVE

Stop Summer Brain Drain “Summer brain drain” refers to the loss of skills and knowledge that can occur in children during the summer months. You can help prevent your young learner from getting on the brain drain train by incorporating some of these activities into your summer routine. Pick out a workbook for your child to do 3-5 days per week for 30-60 minutes each time. Perhaps you can reward your child with a sticker for each session, and include a ‘bigger’ reward like a trip to his or her favorite treat spot after a certain number of stickers are earned. Make learning fun by incorporating science experiments found on Pinterest. Things may get a bit messy, but the kids will love the hands-on activities! You can also get outside and do ‘physical education’ at the beach or on a hike. Explore nature and have your child create a journal about what he or she sees while outdoors. Set aside time for the arts, as well. Here on Maui, there is a wealth of opportunity to see art, create art, and meet artists at galleries. Let your child explore his or her theatrical side by taking classes or auditioning for a local play. Free ukulele lessons are often taught at shopping malls on Maui, and offer a wonderful opportunity to learn the basics of this beloved island instrument.

Head to the local library each week and check out books that interest your child, as well as books that broaden his or her world perspective. History books, biographies, travel books and fictional books from specific eras are great sources of learning. The library has a summer reading program that your child can participate in, as well as special programs for specific age groups. Contact your local Hawaii library for more information. Finally, you may consider allowing time for playing educational games on the computer. The kids will enjoy it and they will gain (or retain) knowledge at the same time. There are many ways to help combat summer brain drain. Don’t let the choices overwhelm you; rather, just pick a few and get started! Your child may even thank you (one can hope) when that new school year begins. JP

Our Keiki STORYTELLING

Children Learn Through Storytelling In Waldorf Education, the ancient art of oral storytelling is still both practiced and revered. In early childhood, we derive inspiration primarily from fairy tales from around the world, as all cultures tend to use universal archetypes and weave moral lessons permeated with the wisdom of the ages into their tales. When the teacher tells the story from memory, rather than reading to the children from a book, the words of the story are imbued with the heartwarmth of the teacher and envelop the children as they listen. Each day’s story time begins with the lighting of a candle, the ringing of a bell, and the singing of a song to bring reverence and rhythm to this special time of day. The same tale is typically told over three successive weeks. At first the tale is simply told by heart by the teacher. As the children listen to the story, they create mental pictures that arise from hearing the words – the first step in developing the crucial skill they will need in later years for healthy reading comprehension. During the second week a puppet show is put on, first by the teacher, and later by the children in the class. As they watch the puppets enact the story, the rich vocabulary

embedded in the tale is further integrated. When the children begin to control the puppets themselves, the development of sequencing and motor planning is called upon as they anticipate how their character will move through the set and interact with other characters. The third week offers an opportunity for the students to dress up in costumes and enact the play. Some children may have the confidence and memory forces to recite the words they have heard their character speak verbatim by this point. As the inherent meaning of the story takes root within the children, they are also having their first experience of public performance in front of the kind and supportive audience of their kindergarten friends, an activity that over time often develops into confidence with public speaking. A&B Sports Spotlight Celebrates 20 Years A&B, in partnership with the MIL and The Maui News, founded Sports Spotlight in 1999. A total of twelve public and private schools participate in the Sports Spotlight program: Baldwin High School, Hana High School, Kamehameha Schools Maui, Kihei Charter, King Kekaulike, Lahainaluna, Lana'i High and Elementary, Maui High, Maui Preparatory Academy, Molokai High School, Seabury Hall, and St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School. Each year, 84 student athletes are selected by their coaches and school administrators for recognition in the program. Male and female athletes are highlighted weekly, and a $200 grant is provided to the school in the student’s name to support sports programming. Total donations to Maui athletic programs have totaled over

$250,000. Over 1,600 Maui County young men and women have been recognized in the last 20 years. The annual athlete’s reception hosted by A&B is attended by over 300 people - athletes and their families, school and league administrators, state and county elected officials and numerous Maui employees. The year-end reception has become a recognized and anticipated high school event. #ABSportsSpotlight

Baby Keiki

baby talk Decoding the Secret Language of Babies

Baby babble is not to be underestimated. It’s their way of communicating their needs to us. To tune into their language and understand what they’re trying to tell us, consider the following information.

31 | www.mauifamilymagazine.com

Baby Keiki BABY TALK

Research conducted by Priscilla Dunstan, a former mezzo-soprano and mother, found that all babies have five “words” to communicate their needs. According to her, these words are reflexes that occur whenever your baby needs to eat, sleep, be burped, or is uncomfortable during their first three months. Recognizing these sounds and responding to them can help your baby cry less, settle more easily, and have a better night’s sleep. Below is Dunstan’s summary of the five words your newborn may say, what they mean, and how to react.

Neh or Nah: “I’m hungry.”

As with most words, neh or nah is easiest to hear before she starts crying. As soon as your infant begins to cry, listen for the neh sound to determine if she needs to be fed.

Owh: “I’m tired.”

This sound, when added to the yawn reflex, could mean your baby is tired. Look for an oval-shaped mouth while he is saying owh. Translation: it’s my bedtime.

Eh: “I need to be burped.”

You may hear this sound when muscles in your baby’s chest tighten and sound is added. Try burping your baby whenever you hear eh. You will know when to stop burping her because she will stop saying eh.

Eairh: “Give me some relief.”

If you respond to eh whenever you hear it, your baby may not have gas. If you hear eairh, you can offer relief using massage.

Heh: “I’m uncomfortable.”

This could mean that your baby is hot, cold, or needs to change positions. Do what you can to make him feel at ease. Paying attention to the sounds your baby makes can help you understand him or her better. Listen carefully and get to know the sounds and tones to decipher the meaning. Being able to respond to their communication can make life easier for both you and them.

Baby Keiki HEALTHY BABY

Keep Baby Happy This Summer

D

uring the hot summer months, a baby’s health can be seriously affected by dehydration, heat exhaustion and sunburn. With a few simple steps, though, you can ensure your baby stays cool and healthy. Avoid Dehydration Babies need to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. If you are breastfeeding your baby, you don't necessarily need to give him water as well as breast milk, but he may want to breastfeed more than usual. If you're bottle feeding, as well as giving him milk, you can give your baby a little cooled boiled water. If your baby wakes at night, he might want milk. Try cooled boiled water as well if he has had his usual milk feeds. Sun Safety Keep your baby cool and protect her from the sun. Babies less than six months old should be kept out of direct sunlight. Their skin contains

too little melanin, which is the pigment that gives skin, hair and eyes their color, and provides some protection from the sun. Older infants should also be kept out of the sun as much as possible, particularly in the summer and between 11am and 3pm, when the sun is at its strongest. If you go out when it's hot, attach a parasol or sunshade to your baby's stroller to keep her out of direct sunlight. Use Sunscreen Apply a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 to your baby's skin. Make sure the product also protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Many brands produce sunscreen specifically for babies and young children, as these products are less likely to contain additives that might irritate the skin. Apply the sun cream regularly, particularly if your child is in and out of the sea or paddling pool. Make sure your child wears a sun hat with a wide brim or a long flap at the back to protect her head and neck from the sun. Summer needn’t be an uncomfortable time of year for your baby. Think about hydrating him, and keeping her out of the sun and protected from the sun’s rays if she is going to be outdoors. Baby will be happy and so will you!

Baby Keiki PMAD

Normalizing Postpartum Mood & Anxiety Disorders

STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WITH ACUPUNCTUR E

SUMMER SEASON ELEMENT: Fire NATURE: Yang COLOR: Red EMOTION: Joy

BY JADE HOLTER

ORGANS: Heart & Small Intestine

Most people have heard of postpartum depression, but perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD), is a fairly new term that can better describe what some new mothers may experience after childbirth. PMADs can affect 1 in 5 new mothers and can happen anytime in the first two years of the perinatal period. Mothers of every age, culture, race and income level can experience perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, which are considered to be the number one complication of childbirth. After birth, approximately 80% of new mothers will experience the “baby blues,” which is a normal adjustment period caused by changes in hormones and a major life transition. Symptoms of the baby blues are: sadness, feelings of overwhelm, irritability, trouble sleeping and feelings of isolation. These feelings typically start within the first few days after giving birth and usually go away within a couple of weeks. If symptoms do not resolve naturally, or if they worsen, you could be experiencing a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD). Symptoms can manifest in many ways, such as: depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder or obsessive thoughts of the possibility of baby being in danger, panic attacks, and posttraumatic stress disorder. If a new mother is experiencing any of these symptoms she should contact her care provider for assessment. It is important for her to know that she is not alone and that PMADs are temporary and can be treated with a combination of

cognitive therapy, peer support, self-care, and medication, if necessary. Some risk factors include: if a women has previously experienced depression or anxiety, lack of familial or community support, past trauma or adverse life events and lack of sleep. New fathers are also at risk of developing postpartum depression and the risk may increase if the mother is experiencing any PMADs. Some resources for new families who may be experiencing PMADs are: • Postpartum Support International: www.postpartum.net • For fathers: http://postpartummen.com/ • This Isn’t What I Expected by Karen Kleiman, MSW, and Valerie Raskin, MD • Postpartum Husband: Practical Solutions for Living with Postpartum Depression by Karen Kleiman, MSW

Baby Keiki PREGNANCY

Summer Pregnancy Tips

Pregnancy in the summer can be difficult to say the least, so here are some tips for making the most of the season if you are pregnant. • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. • Wear breezy dresses to help combat the heat. • Freeze your favorite snacks. Frozen grapes (or even gummy bears) make great treats for cooling down. • Avoid working out in the heat of the day (10am-3pm). You can still keep up with your healthy habit by exercising in the early morning or early evening hours instead. • Eat watermelon! Watermelon is hydrating and contains a ton of vitamins like vitamins A, B6 and C, lycopene, antioxidants and amino acids. • Use coconut oil to keep your skin moisturized. • Relieve swollen feet with a cool foot bath made of epsom salt and peppermint and lavender essential oils.

• Keep a spray bottle filled with water handy to cool down stat. You can keep it in the fridge for added coolness. • Go for a dip in a swimming pool to cool down, and perhaps get some exercise. • Use an ice pack on your forehead to help keep you cool in the heat of the day or to stave off any headaches. • Take a cool shower to feel refreshed. • Get in the ocean and relax in the water. • Elevate your feet to help with any swelling. • Go to the library and cool down in the air conditioning while reading or hanging out with your other child. • Eat at regular intervals, especially water-dense foods like vegetables and fruits. • Rest, rest, rest! Your body is working overtime during pregnancy and needs rest. So give yourself a break and don’t push yourself when you are tired. If you experience a summer pregnancy, hopefully some of these tips will help you stay healthy, cool and hydrated! No need to dread summertime; just prepare and take those steps to keep yourself as comfortable as possible.

Ohana CAMPING

Programs for the Entire Family!

Hosmer Grove, Haleakalā

Sitting in the cool, windy climate of Haleakalā's cloud belt, Hosmer Grove campground is just below the 7,000 ft. level of the summit area. Due to its elevation, temperatures near freezing at night are to be expected. During the day, highs are from 50-65°F. Chance of rain here is good. The campground is located on a grass area next to the shrub land and forest of Hosmer Grove. Active with animal and bird noises, Hosmer is a great place to go for an early hike on the selfguided nature trail that begins and ends at the campground. It has a few picnic tables, pit toilets, some barbeque grills, and drinkable water. No permit is needed at Hosmer Grove for camping, but it has a 50-person maximum.

Wai‘ānapanapa, Hana

Located off Hana Highway close to Hana town, Wai‘ānapanapa camping is found at the end of Wai‘ānapanapa Road. This campground/park, a popular tourist spot, has cabins with a two-night minimum stay. Wai‘ānapanapa has a perfect black sand beach, natural blow holes, lava tube caves, native hala forest, natural ocean arches, and dramatic sea stacks. With great shore fishing, picnic areas and hiking, there’s something for everyone.

Hulopoe, Lāna‘i

There are eight campsites at Hulopoe on the island of Lāna‘i; each one has room for up to five people. There are barbecue grills, picnic tables, two bathrooms, and cold-water beach showers only. The beach park is roughly a 7-mile (11 km) drive from Lāna‘i City. Before settling down, make sure you have all the supplies you need. There is no store or supermarket at the beach park, only a small store at Manele Harbor. The only supermarket on the island is in Lāna‘i City. You'll have two transportation options to get to Lāna‘i City: rent a car or call a taxi. The camping permit can be obtained from Castle & Cooke. Camping permits are issued upon arrival at the beach park. For campsite reservations and information, contact: Dony Haban, Park Manager, Castle and Cooke Resorts, P.O. Box 630310, Lāna‘i City, HI 96763, or call (808) 565-2695.

Before heading out to camp, always check for changes in campground policies! Enjoy the great outdoors from your campground this summer. Seeing the world from a different perspective can be a rewarding and refreshing experience for you and the whole family.

What to Do When Parenting Styles Clash BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.

Each parent has their own history, beliefs, and approach to parenting. Much of your approach will be informed by the way you were raised. You may want to hold on to parts of your own upbringing or intentionally take a different approach. You have your own hopes and dreams for your child, which influence your parenting. In addition, you have your temperament and lifestyle that play a role in approach to your child rearing. And then you have your parent partner who also has all of these variablesHow do you come together to parent so that you can be consistent with your child rearing? Whether living together or apart, consider the following: • Your differences are an opportunity to come together around parenting. Be curious about each other’s perspectives and seek to understand each other better. • Be aware that you may be overwhelmed with big feelings unexpectedly about parenting practices- reflect on them and create safety in your relationship to share them with each other. • Your goal is not to agree on everything but to attune to each other. • Start with what you both agree on – that you care deeply about your child & parenting roleand build your approach together from here. • Take turns with different roles- this will allow you to appreciate what each other contributes. • Verbally compliment your partner regularly by sharing what you appreciate about his or her parenting.

• Don’t keep score- you are a team and expect that you each contribute in ways that sometimes feels uneven. • Don't blame each other- you are there to co-parent and to support each other even on your least stellar parenting days. • Touch base regularly about what is going well and what is tricky with regards to your parenting. It is critical to support each other. • Take parenting classes and read about your child’s development. • Be an expert at reading your child’s cues and talk to each other about it. • Parenting is a dynamic growth experience. Keep humor in your communication togetherit will bring levity to your differences. Ohana EMPATHY

Is your child 3-6 years old? Preschool Enrollment is OPEN

Roots of Empathy Program

R

oots of Empathy is an evidence-based social and emotional learning program delivered in elementary school classrooms that has been proven to increase pro-social behaviors and decrease aggression such as bullying. The mission of this international program, founded by Mary Gordon, is this: “Roots of Empathy is helping to create a world in which people help more and hurt less by fostering empathy in children. We do this by supporting children to create a deeper connection with themselves and others.” A champion of the program, Montessori School of Maui Head of School Dr. Eric Dustman utilized Mary Gordon’s research in his doctoral studies where he sought to more fully understand the perspective that children ages 9–12 have about empathy. His own work affirmed the value of the Roots of Empathy program and supported his own findings that empathy is innate, can also be learned, and is evocative of physiological changes within the body. Efforts to implement the program at Montessori School of Maui have been met with high praise

and real, tangible results. Fully integrated in five classrooms presently with five others scheduled for the next academic year, Eric says, “Roots of Empathy encourages children to look inward and reflect outward. By strengthening their ability to practice perspective taking, young children develop a greater tendency to consider themselves, others, and behavior that supports new relationships and shared connections.” Research over two decades shows that Roots of Empathy: • significantly reduces aggression and bullying; • significantly increases pro-social behaviors (e.g., sharing, caring, kindness, helping); and • creates beneficial impacts that last over time. The Montessori School of Maui staff and instructors feel honored and inspired to be the first school on Maui to implement this important program. The school looks forward to seeing positive social and emotional effects from this program in the community for years to come. For more information on the Roots of Empathy Program, visit: rootsofempathy.org.

Ohana SUMMER SAFETY

Summer Safety: Mauka to Makai

A

s we welcome summer, let’s make a pact to get outside more! Get outside, get healthy The health benefits of getting active outside for both adults and children are no secret. In fact, studies have shown that just being outside in itself can improve your physical and mental health - decreasing stress, lowering blood pressure, and helping with depression and anxiety. And with the number of hours parents and their children spend using electronics increasing rapidly, it is even more important to make going outside a priority for families this summer. Lucky we live Maui Luckily for us Maui families, there are plenty of free outdoor activities to keep us busy during the spring and summer breaks. From an invigorating hike on the slopes of Haleakala at Poli Poli State Park, to a refreshing swim in the crystal waters of Kaanapali, or a relaxing bike ride in your favorite park, people travel across oceans to experience the beautiful outdoors we call home. Safety First Putting safety first helps ensure school breaks can be fun and carefree. Here are a few tips to follow from mauka (mountain/inland) to makai (ocean): Hiking Safety • Research hike area including terrain, trail length, and weather.

• Pack proper equipment including appropriate shoes, first aid kit, flashlight, sunscreen, and lots of water. • Hike in a group and keep track of each other. Always let someone know where you’re hiking and how long you’ll be gone. Ocean Safety • Never turn your back on the ocean. • Never swim alone. • Swim only in safe lifeguarded areas and pay attention to posted warning signs. • Know your limits. When in doubt, don’t go out. Helmet Safety Always wear a helmet when biking or skateboarding and make sure it fits correctly! • Helmet should sit level and low on forehead one or two finger widths above eyebrows. • Center buckle under chin. • Adjust side straps to form a “Y“ shape slightly under ears. • One finger should fit between chin and chinstrap and helmet should stay on tight when you shake your head.
