Our Keiki NEWS • TRENDS • TIPS Coolest Holiday Crafts It may be too warm for snow here on Maui, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make cool holiday crafts. Here are three ideas to get you and your little ones into the season, even if you’re wearing a bathing suit while doing them! Mini Snow Globes What you’ll need: • Recycled baby food jar or mason jar • Gold paint or spray paint to paint the lid • A mini tree or some kind of mini holiday figurine • Glass glue or Epoxy • Glitter • Glycerin (you can find this at the drug store) • Distilled water 1. First, if recycling a clean baby food jar, remove the label. You can soak it in hot water and then use lemon essential oil or Goo Gone to get rid of any residue. 2. Paint the lid gold using either the spray paint or gold paint. Once dry, glue the mini tree or holiday figurine to the inside of the lid. The lid will be the bottom of the snow globe, so glue your figurine right side up. Allow this to dry 24 hours so that the figurine doesn’t fall off when the kids shake their snow globe. 3. Once everything is dried and set, add the following ingredients into the jar: glitter, distilled water, and 5 drops of glycerin. (Use more glycerin if you are using a larger mason jar.)

4. Tighten the lid onto the jar. Then turn it over so the lid is on the bottom and the figurine is right side up. Give it a little shake to watch the glitter fall. Your kids will love this! Make it Snow on Maui Snow on Maui? Really? Yup! And it’s done with just two ingredients! What you’ll need: • 1 box of baking soda • 1 can of shaving cream 1. In a plastic bin or bucket, put the entire contents of your box of baking soda. 2. Slowly start to add the shaving cream. Soon you’ll see the “snow” start to form. It should be light, fluffy and cold! Your kids will be amazed. Let them make snowballs and snowmen, and have fun with their snow on Maui! SB Amidst the cool mountain air and spectacular views, and at approximately 2500 feet in elevation, sits our beautiful 14-acre campus which hosts our much anticipated annual Harvest Festival! Funds raised from the Harvest Festival support enrichment programs, art classes, music, classroom supplies, physical education, student activities and so much more.

Our Keiki CONNECTION

Play to Connect with Your Kids “Too much love never spoils children. Children become spoiled when we substitute ‘presents’ for ‘presence’. “ - Dr. Anthony Witham One important way we can give our children the gift of “presence” is by playing with them. When your children ask you to play, remember they are inviting you into their world. It is a great opportunity to connect on their level and deepen your relationship. Perhaps you feel like you do not even know how to play, and that is okay! Let your children lead the way and you will reap the benefits of enjoying those moments together. Setting aside even just 15 minutes a day for playtime with your kids can make a huge impact on their lives, and on yours! Whether your children are into building blocks or dolls, entering their world of play will brighten their day and show them you care about their interests. Playing together allows time for you to listen to, encourage, and learn from your children. You can see their personalities shine as you create scenarios for superheroes and dolls. Taking playtime outside is easy to do on the islands with beaches, mountains and streams to explore with your little ones. Enjoying nature

together not only promotes your connection as a family, it also promotes good health and wellbeing in general. Getting outdoors together also balances out any screen time our children or we adults partake in. Even just kicking the soccer ball around or tossing a football to each other can create a sense of camaraderie and fun between you and your children. If you have more than one child, you may want to consider going on “dates” with each individual child. That one-on-one time allows you to focus on their needs without distraction. It can be as simple as playing at the park, getting a treat at the doughnut shop, taking an art class together or checking out a new beach. Your children may not remember that the car was washed or that the home was immaculate, but they will remember with fondness the times you got on their level and played with them. JP

Our Keiki SKILLS

Life Skills Every Kid Needs BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.

S

afety & Security Kids need to have a secure foundation of consistency in where they live, the primary people in their lives and in daily routines. Safety is also created from both love and boundaries from primary caregivers, which sets the stage for your child’s availability to learn new skills. Self-Regulation The child’s first skill that develops in infancy is the ability to maintain a ‘calm state’. This skill continues to develop as your child’s world becomes more complex, and she learns to regulate around different environments, people, stressors and her own emotions. One of the most important self-regulation skills is to learn how to use the people close to her to cope and recover. This is foundational to later developing a sense of self-control and self-discipline. Social Community The child needs to learn to be part of a community. This of course starts with his family community and then extends out to the neigh-

borhood, the school, spiritual community and extracurricular activities. Becoming a member of communities allows your child to learn the impact of his actions on others, expand his world past his own needs, learn how to share and to work towards a common goal. These experiences lead to a sense of contribution, pride and responsibility. Social-Emotional Skills The child needs to learn to communicate around a wide range of emotions and work with others to problem solve when things don’t go the way she expects. She needs support from adults to be able to sit in her big emotion and know that the emotion will get smaller, to see possible solutions and to work with others to execute a solution. She needs to be able to tolerate a robust range of emotions and to see herself as a competent problem-solver. Play Skills This seems self-evident, but in our world of technology, kids are quickly trading in multi-sensory, creative, imaginative play for electronic stimulation. The second culprit is homework and the third is overscheduling of extracurricular activities. Kids need time to engage in 3-dimensional, creative play involving both indoor and outdoor environments, with their caregivers and with their peers. These experiences shape creativity, social skills and cognitive thinking skills. Kiegan Blake is an Occupational Therapist, Behavioral Specialist and Director of Maui Center For Child Development. Our Keiki MUSIC

Music & Your Keiki

M

usic and kids go together like peanut butter and jelly. Whether it’s popping headphones on your pregnant belly so that your baby can listen in the womb, or it’s singing a lullaby to help soothe your keiki or put them to bed, music is an integral part of raising little ones. And it’s with good reason. Studies show that music not only tantalizes the senses and can get your kids moving, but it has a ton of benefits for them and their growing brains. Here are just a few: • Music can help boost memory • Music can help with socialization • Music can help boost confidence • Music can help with language development

• Music can help increase creativity • Playing a musical instrument can help with motor skills and learning cause and effect • And so much more! So get out those instruments (pots and pans are totally acceptable), pop in a CD, or put on an old record and get listening and moving with your keiki. Our Pick for Music Time Local Maui mom, singer/songwriter, children’s music teacher and performer, TRIA, has a new album, Honu - Island Melodies For Kids, that weaves together playful imagery around Maui, songs of humpback whales, sweet strums of the ukulele and beautiful sounds of the nose flute. Honu - Island Melodies For Kids’ songs are catchy and inviting and get kids (and parents!) moving and singing along in no time. The album features tunes perfect for calming your little one in the afternoon, and others that are sure to get them moving and dancing around. Best of all, TRIA shares local Hawaiian names of animals so your keiki will be learning the Hawaiian language too! You can check out Honu - Island Melodies For Kids and stay informed on upcoming concerts with Tria and the Honu band at triakidsmusic.com.

Our Keiki RESOLUTIONS

New Year’s Resolutions with Kids Before you ring in the new year, take some time with the family to give thanks and reflect on the year passing. Use any of the following activities to share reflections as a family. A Wall of Resolutions Unroll a large piece of crate paper and tape it to the wall in a place that’s frequented by everyone in the family, such as the kitchen or dining room. Have the kids help you decorate it and write on it some sort of title, like ‘Reflections 2016.’ Place a basket of colored markers nearby, and invite everyone to leave a note of reflection on the craft paper whenever they are passing by it. Read them all together on New Year’s eve, and roll up the paper. Then on New Year’s day, put another blank paper on the wall to write resolutions or intentions for the new year. Twenty Questions On small pieces of paper, write down one question about the year. Some ideas are: • What was your favorite thing that happened this year?

• Which was your favorite place that you visited? • What was your favorite thing about school/work? • If you could go back and do one thing differently, what would it be? • What was your favorite summer/springtime activity? • What was your favorite fall/winter activity? • What was your biggest accomplishment at school or work? • What was the biggest way you gave back to the community? • What was your favorite sport or activity? Fold each question up and place it in a jar. On New Year’s eve, have each family member take turns grabbing a question out of the jar and sharing his or her answer with the family. This is a fun way to reminisce and reflect on the year. SB

Our Keiki LICE

Safe, Effective, Fast Lice Treatment Ukus, lice—whatever you call it, it’s really not all that bad and even the best of kids can get it. As a parent, you dread that letter home or call from the office telling you that one of the kids in class, or worse yet, your kid, has lice. Don’t worry, it happens. Lice are not dangerous, but they are contagious. Your child must be treated promptly and safely to avoid spreading lice to other friends, family members and classmates. Head lice infamously cause stress, disgust and embarrassment for parents whose kids get infested. But thanks to the opening of Lice Clinics of Hawaii, parents on Maui no longer have to worry about treating the icky bugs themselves. Clinic owner and Maui mom Barrie Desmond has experienced the stress and difficulty of treating lice in her own family and is bringing the AirAllé treatment to the island because it offers a better choice for parents. “I felt horrible about putting chemicals on my kids’

heads and torturing them for hours with a lice comb. Nitpicking is so time consuming!” Barrie said. “We use an FDA-cleared medical device which dehydrates and kills the nits and bugs in a single treatment using just heated air.” Lice Clinics of Hawaii is located at 300 Ohukai Road B-319 (Kihei Commercial Center) in North Kihei behind the Tesoro Gas Station. The clinic is open seven days per week by appointment. Depending on the severity, the clinician will recommend an appropriate treatment to fit each individual and budget. None of our treatments use pesticides or toxic chemicals. The AirAllé treatment takes about 60–90 minutes, and comes with a guarantee when all family members are treated or screened for head lice.

3RD Annual Holiday Tree Lighting SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10TH // 5:30PM MAUIWINE @ 14815 PI‘ILANI HWY., KULA On December 10th, the community is invited to celebrate the holidays at the Third Annual Holiday Tree lighting on the historical grounds of MauiWine. The tall pine trees combined with that holiday “chill in the air,” makes upcountry perfect for bundling up Maui-style and celebrating the yuletide season. Festivities start at 5:30 p.m. with the lighting of the holiday tree after sunset, followed by a movie under the stars (low-chairs and blankets are welcome). There will be plenty of activities for family and friends to enjoy, including live entertainment, holiday crafts for kids, Santa Claus’ arrival and photos, sparkling toasts and complimentary wine tastings inside the King’s

Cottage. Warm beverages and holiday comfort food by Ulupalakua Ranch Store & Grill will be available for purchase. Admission is free with non-perishable food donation for the Maui Food Bank. Visit www. mauiwine.com or call (808) 878-6058.

Our Keiki HAWAII TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY

HTA Opens New Wailuku Learning Center

H

awaii Technology Academy (HTA) is the state’s largest public charter school, with Learning Center sites on Hawai‘i, Kauai, Maui, and Oahu. The blended learning program at HTA is growing and new Learning Centers are popping up around the state. HTA’s newest Learning Center recently opened in the heart of Wailuku at 2050 Main Street. HTA offers a blended learning experience—a combination of face-to-face classes, virtual instruction and independent learning. At over 2300 square feet, HTA’s new Wailuku Learning Center boasts science labs and an art room. The new Learning Center provides students with the ability to collaborate with one another as they attend their face-to-face classes. Executive Director Leigh Fitzgerald remarks, “One of the innovative design principles of our new space is that each classroom can accommodate individual, small group or full class learning for a kindergartener one day, and a group of high school seniors the next. Since

New Shanghai Circus MONDAY, JANUARY 16TH // 4PM & 7:30PM TUESDAY, JANUARY 17TH // 4PM & 7PM MAUI ARTS & CULTURAL CENTER

HTA’s students only attend Learning Center classes a few days per week, it is imperative that our classrooms offer teachers and students the ability to engage in physically active and dynamic learning. When at the Learning Center, students should be collaborating with their classmates on projects, creating presentations and performances, or engaging in other handson learning activities with the guidance of their teachers and peers.” Enrollment of students on Maui has quadrupled over the past four years, with now over 100 students in grades K-12. For many Maui families looking for an alternative to traditional school, HTA’s blended learning program is the answer. HTA empowers students to succeed through face-to-face instruction, virtual instruction and independent learning. HTA’s remote sites in Hana and Napili will continue to thrive, with the new Wailuku site serving as hub for all of Maui. “Having a permanent learning center space on Maui provides our students with more opportunities for intervention, enrichment, and clubs,” states Fitzgerald. To learn more about Hawaii Technology Academy, please visit myhta.org.

China’s most daring acrobats, jugglers, balance artists, and contortionists return to Maui for the year’s grandest family spectacular. These highly skilled, rigorously trained and multitalented acrobats will enthrall you as they bend and twist with graceful movements to form living sculptures. Matched with innovative choreography, radiant lighting, enchanting scenery and powerful music, this beautifully orchestrated presentation of acrobatic skills will leave the audience spellbound! Building on traditional Chinese acts, the artists of today’s New Shanghai Circus add layers of complexity and daring to bring new spectacular stunts and favorite jaw-droppers. Kids of all ages, from preschool to senior citizen, will enjoy these intrepid performers! Tickets: $12, $25, $35 (plus applicable fees)

Our Keiki ST. ANTHONY SCHOOL

It’s a New Day at St. Anthony School! With more than 165 years of history behind it, St. Antony School launched this fall of a first-time middle school, the hiring of a new grade school principal and the launching of a refreshed brand and website. Soon, St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School expects to establish a new state-ofthe-art Communication and Media Lab. Newly-hired Grade School Principal Linda Keizer was hired in July 2016 following the retirement of Winona Martinez, a 1962 St. Anthony graduate who dedicated more than four decades of service to Hawaii’s Catholic school students. An educator with 28 years of experience, Keizer most recently served as principal of Our Lady of Grade Catholic Academy in East Moine, Illinois. She worked as substitute teacher for St. Anthony Grade School after recently moving to Maui. “I felt welcomed and part of the family from the

minute I stepped on the campus,” Keizer said. “Since my first experience with St. Anthony Grade School, I knew the good news was being lived out in every minute of every day and a place where I wanted to be!” At the new middle school, the focus has been to provide a progressive education experience for sixth- through eighth-grade. Housed in a refreshed physical environment, the students are organized around the TRIBES ™ philosophy, creating a safe, inclusive place for all and a sense of family or ‘ohana. Integral to their basic, solid curriculum is an exploratory course in which middle schoolers have already planted a school garden, flew drones, performed in a dramatic play and created a new online campus blog. The long-awaited Communication and Media Lab is poised to be ready by the end of the fall season. The CAM Lab features a 21st Century Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) based laboratory and a state-of-the-art space for project-based learning that encourages team building and the production of video, digital media, film and TV content. Scholarships and tuition assistance are available for students enrolling at St. Anthony School. For families interested in applying for school year 2017-2018, private campus tours may be scheduled, and all are invited to attend an Open House set for January 28, 2017. To learn more, visit sasmaui.org.

Baby Keiki NEWS • TRENDS • TIPS Holidays With a New Baby If you have a new baby during the holidays, you may be torn between keeping traditions and catching up on some much needed sleep. As you prepare for the holidays with a new baby, these tips may help alleviate unnecessary pressure from your life, allowing you to still enjoy the season. Set low expectations. The holidays can be filled with astounding expectations. Couple that with a new baby and stress levels may escalate. Nip those expectations in the bud by setting low expectations for yourself and others. Focus on caring for your baby and yourself first, and then if you are able to do a fun outing or event, consider it a bonus rather than a must. Don’t overcommit. Instead of accepting every holiday party invitation, simply let the host know that you will make an effort to attend but cannot commit at this time since the baby is still so young. Go with the flow. Keep your routine with your baby; but when there are additional activities, just go with the flow of the day and do what works best for you and your family. Let your family know you need a slow morning at home and will be part of the festivities once your routines with the baby are complete.

Maintain your sleep pattern as you are able. Getting enough rest is key to good health and mental function. While you may be tempted to extend your late night hours for visitors, if it interrupts the rest you need it could be detrimental to your overall health. Choose one tradition that works easily with a newborn. Traditions are fun ways to stay connected with family. Pick one to try with your new baby and enjoy it! Know that you can always add more traditions in the coming years. Skip cooking for the crowds. Keeping the baby fed and cared for is your main priority. Feeding 20 people is not. Ask family to come see you. Leaving the house with a new baby can be a challenge. Ask your ‘ohana to come see you at home instead. Perhaps they can bring a meal as well? Accepting help during the new baby phase is essential. JP The upcountry dance studio will hold its annual community performance, Holiday of Dance, at the AAPA studios located behind the Kula Community Center. Dancers of all ages will perform classical variations from the Nutcracker ballet along with festive contemporary and jazz dance pieces.

Baby Keiki PRESCHOOL

Choosing the Right Preschool

G

iven the college-like intensity of preschool admissions these days—with applications, waitlists, and hefty tuitions—choosing a preschool can be a daunting process. But you can soften the stress by narrowing your criteria ahead of time. Here are some considerations to take into account in your search: Part- or Full-Time You may remember going to preschool for a few hours a day, two or three days a week. And while those options exist, some preschools offer fullday, full-week preschool or child-care/preschool combinations. Decide how many days and for how long your child will attend preschool. Play-based, Academic, Co-op Knowing your goals for preschool can help you decide which preschool philosophy and style might fit best. Play-based schools target developmental and social growth, and encourage

child-directed learning. A traditional preschool with an academic focus has more structure and is teacher-directed. Co-op preschools rely heavily on parental participation. Other types of preschools include nature-oriented, religious-affiliated, and bilingual. Location Consider how far you want to drive, and whether you want your child to be around preschoolers who will attend the same elementary school in future years. You may prefer a more distant school for its reputation and be willing to drive. Or you may find a preschool along your commute to work more convenient. Class Size and Teacher-Student Ratio More reserved children may fare better in a more intimate setting, while other preschoolers thrive in a bustling room with lots of kids. Don’t forget to note how many students there are per adult in the classroom. A larger class with a teacher and several aides may allow your child more one-on-one attention than a small class served by a single teacher. Multi-year Options If your child’s birthday falls close to the elementary enrollment cutoff date, you may want them to attend more than one year of preschool. Many preschools offer age-based classes, but you may also find that a preschool class followed by a pre-K class works for your family. LK Santa is coming to town and the Maui Family YMCA invites you to help prepare for his arrival. Join us as we embrace the spirit of Christmas through creative and joyous activities. Each child will be able to create a keepsake at one of our arts & crafts stations, participate in friendly non-competitive games, and take pictures with Santa. Decorating supplies and a healthy snack will be provided. This event will be held at the Maui Family YMCA. Reminder to the parents—this is a free event for children under the age of five and parental supervision is required. For more information, or to RSVP, please call 808-242-9007. RSVP by December 16th, 2016.

Baby Keiki REIKI

Reiki in the Womb BY KRISTINE KOZUKI

I have been practicing Reiki Natural Healing for a few years now and have no doubt in its amazing power to heal. Since I have become pregnant, my little one has received a lot of Reiki while in the womb, as both my husband and I are trained in this beautiful Japanese healing technique. I can feel his strong movements when I give this energy to him daily, and know that he enjoys it. At my doctor’s appointment the other day, we did some routine heartbeat monitoring where they graph the baby’s heartbeat movements for about 15 minutes. The first 10 minutes I just lay there, did nothing, and rested; and for the last 5 minutes I decided to give him Reiki to see what would happen. If you look at my graph, the first 10 minutes was without Reiki (green line) and the last 5 minutes (yellow line) was with Reiki. There was an obvious jump in his heartbeat strength in the last 5 minutes, which my doctor could not explain. I found it very amazing to see scientific proof of the effect Reiki has on my little one – to see this life force energy at work on paper! For those who aren’t familiar with Reiki Natural Healing, it has been practiced in Hawaii since 1936. It is a Japanese technique for stress

reduction, healing promotion, and all around mind, body, spirit balance and healing. It’s usually administered by “laying-on hands,” and is based on universal life force energy that flows through us and makes us alive. If our life force energy is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress; and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words – “Rei” which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power,” and “Ki” which is “life force energy.” So Reiki is actually spiritually-guided life force energy. Kristine Kozuki is a student of Shalandra Abbey, a fulltime Reiki Master in Hawaii for 25 years. Shalandra is author of Living a Life of Reiki, and teaches classes to children and adults on Maui. Habits to Make Your Family Happier

G

et plenty of rest. It may sound simplistic, but think about how difficult it is to be happy when you’re tired. The truth is, these days most of us aren’t getting enough sleep. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 3 adults and 7 in 10 teens are chronically sleep deprived. Help your family make a habit of going to bed earlier for a better night’s sleep. Disconnect from the virtual world to be together. Many families occupy the same room while using their digital devices, without interacting with each other. Yet no one would disagree that connecting face-to-face is much better. Make a habit of snuggling on the couch together in the evening or playing a short game right after school. Even a few minutes of interaction help family members feel seen and valued, which yields greater happiness.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow! TUES., THURS., & SAT., DECEMBER 1ST–24TH 6:30PM & 8:30PM // CENTER PROMENADE @ QUEEN KA‘AHUMANU CENTER

Keep part of the house clutter-free. It’s challenging to escape the influx of mail and school papers. And in many households laundry can linger for days in various stages of completion. However, research shows that clutter causes elevated stress hormones and depression. That’s why encouraging your family to make a habit of daily clearing out even one space can contribute to happiness. That no-clutter zone offers a spot where everyone can relax. Want more good vibes? Gradually extend the clutter-free space to other parts of the house. Laugh together often. Watch a family-friendly comedy. Tell silly jokes. Have a tickle fight. Even if the laughter is forced at the start, you’ll have a hard time not succumbing to genuine peals before long; which is why it’s possible to make laughing together a household habit. Show kindness toward others. Studies show that altruistic acts, such as offering to weed an elderly neighbor’s garden or letting someone step ahead of you in line, lead to a greater sense of wellbeing for the person doing good. Seek ways for your family to give back to your community on a regular basis. LK It’s snowing on Maui! 2016 will be a “white Christmas” for Maui residents and visitors as Queen Kaahumanu Center transforms into a giant snow globe. Snowflakes will descend on Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center frosting its center promenade during its “Let it Snow!” shows at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. for ten minutes on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, December 1–24. Each snowfall show will present a different holiday theme to make sure there is something for everyone from country, jazz, pop, contemporary and a cappella music to dance performances. Starbucks will be treating the first 800 arrivals to each show to hot chocolate. No need to “go out in the storm” as family and friends can enjoy a winter wonderland while wearing board shorts and slippahs. More information and updated schedule at www.queenkaahumanucenter.com

A Fresh Approach to Thank-You Notes

maui mall

871.4513

Whether it’s for a gift, for an event (like dinner), after an interview, or just for a small gesture that meant a lot to you, thank-you notes are still a good idea. We may live in a fast world, but thank-you notes are here to stay. They offer connection, express gratitude, and they can go a long way to let the other person know that you care. Here are a few fresh ideas for making thank-you notes easy peasy, and still heartfelt. Electronic Thanks Yup, we went there. While handwritten notes are still our first choice, we think there could be perfect opportunities when a thank-you via text or email can be good too. Use your best judgment here and think about the recipient

Nothing Cooler

when opting to go the electronic route. If it’s a close friend or family member, sending a fun thank-you text or email, along with a picture, could totally be okay. But stick with the traditional handwritten note for Grandma, who is sure to appreciate the effort of popping that envelope in the mail. You can also use an app such as Ink (free on iTunes) to send a thank-you note within minutes. In just a few taps you can upload a photo, write a note of thanks, pay, and off it will go. No need to go to the store, buy a stamp, or make sure you actually get that envelope in the mailbox. The recipient will get either a postcard or a card in an envelope (that’s your choice); and not only will they get a thank-you note, but they’ll also receive a photo momentum to hang on to. This could be a great option for Grandma or Aunty Irene. Handwritten Notes Handwritten notes are timeless and traditional. But we can make handwritten notes fresh by adding some really fun stationery or personalized cards. It’s always fun to get a sassy, colorful card from a friend that not only says thanks but also brightens your day. This doesn’t have to be expensive. You can find some great bargains that are also stylish in the dollar section at Target; or if you want to get creative, you could make your own after a quick trip to Ben Franklin’s for some cardstock and supplies. The freshest idea when it comes to thank-you notes is, just doing them. Whether via text or sending out a handwritten card, the sentiment is sure to not be forgotten if done with a heart full of gratitude. SB

Ohana COMMUNICATION

Planning Great Family Meetings

G

etting family members all on the same page—whether it be about expectations for chores, where to go on vacation, or who will relinquish their room when Grandma comes to visit—can be a challenge. If you’re running into miscommunications and disagreements in your household, or simply want to catch everyone’s attention for a fun announcement, it may be time to hold a family meeting. Here are six tips for planning your family meeting: 1. Set a time and date. Tacking a meeting onto the end of dinner or springing one on your crew haphazardly, communicates a lack of earnestness on your part. Let your family know this is important by scheduling it in advance. 2. Make it fun. Even if you need to discuss serious matters, like taking in an ill relative, family meetings should include an ele-

ment of fun. Play a game (with prizes) and serve snacks. Engage in the types of goofy antics your family enjoys. An element of fun reminds everyone why it’s great to be a part of your family. 3. Encourage all members of your family to contribute. Even the smallest person should be allowed to voice his or her thoughts. Likewise, take care not to let any one person dominate. 4. Ban technology. Having everyone leave their electronic devices outside the room or collecting them in a basket at the center of the table, limits distraction. It also helps train kids to respect others by giving them their full attention. 5. Schedule meetings regularly—once a month, once a quarter or once a year. Chances are your first family meeting may be a little rocky. But over time everyone will get the hang of what’s expected and learn how fun and productive family meetings can be. 6. Invite your children to take turns leading, once you have held a few family meetings. Not only will they learn organizational and leadership skills, your family members will gain a better appreciation for each other as they witness members in different roles. LK

Maui Humane Society Maui Humane Society has volunteer opportunities for families looking to help out Maui’s homeless pets. It’s a great place to get your pet fix; every animal from turtles and guinea pigs to cats and dogs would love to have your attention! Volunteers help with exercising animals, folding brochures and newsletters, cleaning, folding towels, customer service and more! Children, ages 5–14, can volunteer with their parents in shelter and children 15 years and older can come in on their own. Not able to come into the shelter? Reserve a spot in our Beach Buddies program. This program is fun for all ages and species involved. This program is offered most Wednesdays and Fridays and allows you to take a wonderful shelter dog out on the town for the day. It’s never too early or late to start volunteering! Ohana HOLIDAYS

DIY Holiday Photo Studio Whether you go with the coordinated outfits, keep it casual, or go formal, holiday photos are nice to do each year so that you can mark that moment in time and look back at them later. Here are some easy ways to make a DIY holiday photo studio in your home. Find a spot that gets natural light and create one of these photo spaces. Wrap it Grab a roll of fun printed wrapping paper—one that’s pretty sturdy. Unroll it entirely and tape one end to the wall about 3 feet up, and one end to the floor once fully unrolled. This is great for newborns or baby photos since it creates a small studio. The key is to use wrapping paper that packs a punch. Check out Wrappily. com—local, mom-created, and sustainable – for some great designs. Drape it For just a little money you can find some light, semi-sheer drapes. Go with white, or do a little color; that’s totally up to you. Find a wall where you can attach your drapes. If you don’t want to put holes in your wall, use non-damaging hooks or clips that stick to your wall. Hang your drape, and ta-da! You’ve got a mini photo studio. You could also attach Christmas lights behind the curtain to add some sparkle to your photos.

The Game’s Afoot MONTH OF DECEMBER PROARTS PLAYHOUSE, KIHEI

Stream it Head to the grocery store or party store, and grab about four to five rolls of birthday streamers. You can make it all one color or go for a variety. Use masking tape to tape the streamers to a wall. Once you’ve decided how wide you want to make your backdrop, cut a piece of tape to that measurement. Place the tape on the wall horizontally, sticky side out, using two pieces of tape at either end to keep it attached to the wall. Cut your streamers all the same length and attach them to the sticky tape on the wall. Once done, apply a piece of clear tape at the top to reinforce the hold of the streamers. Also tape the bottom of the streamers to keep them from flying around. Add some props, and ta-da! You’ve got a fun photo booth perfect for holiday photos or birthday parties. SB

In December, ProArts will present Ken Ludwig’s The Game’s Afoot at the Playhouse in Kihei. This rollicking comedy-mystery set in 1936 revolves around actor William Gillette, famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on the stage. He is spending the Christmas holiday with a few friends at his home in Connecticut when a murder intrudes on the festive occasion. Gillette has to use all his “Sherlock Holmes” skills to help solve the crime and protect his guests from further harm. It all adds up to a fun and exciting evening of theater, with comedy, surprises, and enough twists and turns to last into the New Year. The Cleveland Plain Dealer described the play as “An inspired whodunit … a snappy, clever drawing-room mystery”, while Broadway World Cleveland raved “The Game’s Afoot is murderously funny”. Join us for all the laughs and suspense in Kihei this December. Visit proartspacific.com or call 463-6500.

Ohana COMPLAINING

How to Complain Well (It Can Be Done!)

C

omplaining can be ugly. But there is a time and place for expressing dissatisfaction, and there is an approach to complaining that can get results. These five key components can support anyone to craft a respectful, effective complaint: Praise Often the problem with the way we complain is in our opening. It’s easy to launch into faultfinding in the heat of frustration, which can shut down the lines of communication. Instead, soften your opening lines with praise. Tell the person to whom you want to deliver the complaint, what you like about their product or business and what drew you to it in the first place. Expressing Disappointment When we like someone (such as a person who has just praised us), we don’t want to disappoint him or her. Use that emotion to convey the problem you’re experiencing. “I’m bummed that…” or “I’m disappointed that…” make great lead-ins to explaining what has gone wrong for you.

Clarity & Focus When we have a complaint, our emotions can distract us into sharing everything we don’t care for about a product or store. Suddenly all those less-than-perfect interactions come to mind and we want to unload about them all. Don’t. State as simply as you can what went wrong. Suggestions & Requests It’s not enough to tell someone what you’re unhappy about. In our world where complaints often spiral out of control, people are accustomed to hearing a wide range of demands for satisfaction. Rather than make the person guess, include in your complaint suggestions for what would satisfy you; and if possible, give two or three alternatives to show your flexibility. Praise End your complaint with another expression of what has pleased you about the product or company. This is called “the sandwich approach.” You start on a positive note, share clearly what went wrong for you and how it might be fixed, and you end on an encouraging note. Try thanking them in advance for the help that you’re sure they’ll give you. Explain that you want to go back to enjoying their product or friendship like you have in the past. LK

Ohana CELEBRATION

Fun Projects That Celebrate Your Family With the holidays upon you and more family time on the menu, here are some great ideas to celebrate family that you all can do together. Create a time capsule for the year Grab a glass bottle – one that you can close; a mason jar is perfect. Get together as a family and create your time capsule for the year. Have each family member write a little note of how the year was, things they had fun doing, accomplishments they’re proud of, etc. They don’t have to be very long, but descriptive enough so that it’s fun to read them again sometime down the road. If the kids are little, they can draw instead of write, or they could dictate their note to you. Have everyone put one small item in the time capsule. This could be something that represents an interest they have, or an event or trip.

special; and best of all, the art you create can be displayed in your house or in the nursery, or be given as a gift! What you’ll need: • A canvas • Some washable craft paint – one color for each family member • A frame to house your canvas (optional) • Your hands! Gather the family together and pour the paints into disposable paper plates, pie tins, or any other container that is large enough to fit your flat hand. (Use one container per color.)

Put all the goodies into the jar, then close the jar and save it for the future. You can open it one year later, when you are getting ready to create the current year’s time capsule. Your family will enjoy opening the previous year’s jar to see how things have changed.

Each family member will take turns to dip a hand into his or her respective paint color. One by one, have each person press the paint-dipped hand onto the canvas. Go in order from largest to smallest hand. Once done, add the year to the corner of the canvas to mark the date. And once dry, place your artwork in a frame if you’d like.

Create art together This is an especially fun project if you have a younger child. It’s easy, but it’s also incredibly

What you are left with is a piece of family art that captures time, and is sure to be loved for years to come. SB

Jamie Adkins: Circus Incognitus SATURDAY, JANUARY 21ST // 7:30PM MAUI ARTS & CULTURAL CENTER In Circus Incognitus, virtuoso clown Jamie Adkins is the vulnerable everyman, who has just written a terrific show. He wanders onto stage with the new show in a box, delighted to find the audience ready waiting. Knowing he has just the thing, Jamie struggles to build the scene around him using everyday objects. Things go awry as his props prove most unhelpful: his ladder disintegrates under foot! He wrangles an animated chair, tussles with a pesky hat, negotiates a precarious slack wire and juggles almost everything. Theatre goers even get involved in the endeavour by tossing lemons for Jamie to catch on a fork...held between his teeth! An expert at comedy born of desperation, Jamie’s performance is humble and unguarded. Adkins deftly escorts the audience along his poetic journey with sidesplitting wit for audiences of all ages. Ohana CARING

Parent Partners Help Families in Times of Need Imagine families caring for children with emotional or behavioral challenges. They are desperately trying to get the help they need but can often become overwhelmed trying to navigate the complex system of care. This is where a Parent Partner from ‘Ohana Support Services (‘OSS) can offer valuable support. Parent Partners support and empower parents in their journey to care for their families. They walk with parents by offering nonjudgmental, peer-to-peer support. Parent Partners, such as Pua Basbas on Maui, can assist parents in a multitude of ways. They offer collaborative support to define goals and needs, connect parents with resources, help with transportation, attend important meetings, and offer empowering advocacy. Like all Parent Partners, Pua brings both extensive professional and important “lived” experience to her relationship with program participants. She has truly walked in their shoes. Her son was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome when he was in the 7th grade. Until then, Pua spent several years attempting to get the appropriate support for her son, and often felt overwhelmed by the system and process.

“No one was there to be with me when I didn’t know where to turn and to share my anguish,” Pua says. “There was no peer support to guide me through the complex system. I was all alone. Today, I am a Parent Partner to provide peer support and mentoring to other parents. I am there every step of the way.” Pua’s success story illustrates what can happen when parents dealing with challenges receive the guidance and support they need. It brings powerful meaning to the words, “We Walk With You.” ‘OSS Parent Partners will do just that. The Child & Family Service (CFS) ‘OSS Program is a collaborative partnership with the Department of Health, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division. NEWS • TRENDS • TIPS

Benefits of Gardening BY CYNTHIA NAZARIO-LEARY, PHD Thanks to Maui’s year-round summer weather, gardening is a favorite outdoor activity for kupuna on Maui. Gardening enriches us physically, mentally and spiritually. Research even shows that gardening is one of the best exercises for maintaining bone health. This is especially important in later life when osteoporosis becomes more common. As we grow older, simple modifications can make gardening more manageable. Here are a few tips from Oregon State University Extension that can make gardening a lifelong hobby and exercise: • Use tools with brightly colored handles that make them easy to locate. • Use tools that make seed handling easier such as click seeders or seed tape. • Use long-handled or curved-handled tools, which offer better grip and leverage. • Use a stool, chair or bench to prevent back and joint strain. • Build and use raised beds that accommodate a chair, stool or wheelchair. • Scale down your garden to make it more manageable. • Garden in morning and evening to avoid heat and sun. • Stay hydrated.

• Pace yourself. Start slowly, stretch muscles often, and change your position every 20-30 minutes. Rest for 10 minutes in the shade at least twice each hour. • Wear protective clothing. Lightweight clothing, long sleeved shirt, eye protection, sunscreen, a big hat, and gardening gloves protect against the sun’s rays and much more. • Be prepared. Carry a whistle or cell phone in case you run into any problems. Maui Master Gardener Resources The Maui Master Gardeners program is coordinated through the UH Manoa Extension office in Kahului and provides research-based education and outreach to home gardeners. The Master Gardener Help Desk is staffed by Certified Master Gardeners who take calls most weekdays from 9am–12pm and can be reached by calling the UH Extension office at 244-3242, ext. 228.
