Our Keiki News • Trends • Tips The Inspired Child "It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are." – E.E. Cumings Nurturing creativity in your child takes some effort, but the reward is great! Teach Your Child How to Nature Journal Allow your child to discover what she enjoys about her time in nature, then invite her to write or draw from that perspective. Let her describe what she saw, where she saw it, and anything else that piques her interest. Spending time outdoors in nature, then taking the time to reflect on that experience, can inspire you and your child! Challenge Your Child to Create a Finished Product Give him a prompt such as, “Today’s project is to make a sea turtle.” Then let him decide what to use to make the project, whether it be colored blocks, construction paper, paint, paper mache, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, glitter, clay, macaroni, yarn, or any other materials you have handy. The sky is the limit as your child explores the possibilities to create his sea turtle. Provide Various Options for Children to Choose How They Create “A great way to nurture creativity is to offer choice. In my classroom, my first graders

choose where they sit and which independent math or reading activity they work on. This choice allows them to explore ways in which they learn best,” shared Nicole Heinlein, Maui mother of two and blogger at www.teaching-with-style.com. Dedicate an Art Space in Your Home Whether it’s just a corner of the living room or an entire art studio, dedicating a space to create will encourage your child to make art more regularly. “At home, my children have an art table with a tool organizer from Lowe’s to keep their art supplies,” said Heinlein. She continued, “I am always amazed at the projects they create from this space. Seeing the supplies neatly in front of them helps inspire their creativity. Sometimes I’m so inspired that I join in!” JP
Kula School’s Parent Teacher Association is thrilled to host their 30th Annual Harvest Festival fundraising event on Saturday, November 18th, 9:00am-4:00pm. Once again, this much anticipated event is being held on the lower field of the beautiful Kula School campus. The festival will host 30+ talented artisans and crafters, games for the keiki, entertainment, local farmers and agriculture, pony rides, hay rides, petting zoo, silent auction, ono food, and a few “surprise” additions this year! Volunteers from the school community organize the Harvest Festival. It is Kula School’s largest fundraiser, and monies raised from this event are used to provide programs such as Physical Education, Art, and Music, which they otherwise would not have. Come spend the day upcountry and enjoy a free, family event! For more information: visit Kulapta.org, call (808) 269-2440 / (808) 876-7614, or email kulaharvestfestival@gmail.com.

Our Keiki CRAFTS
Handmade Gifts for the Holidays Handmade gifts are a great option to share your creativity and put love into your gifts this holiday season. You may like to borrow one of the following ideas. Give a gift from the beach and your heart! Make a sand footprint keepsake. Supplies you will need include black cardstock, school glue, a paintbrush, and sand. First, ‘paint’ the bottom of your child’s foot with school glue. Next, place her foot onto the cardstock to make a ‘footprint.’ Then pour sand across the cardstock and allow it all to dry. Finally, shake off the extra sand and frame your work of handmade (or ‘foot made’) art. Make your own memory game. Supplies you will need include wood craft rounds, stamps, and a small box to hold everything. To make the game pieces, stamp two wood pieces with the same stamp and repeat for the entire set, using different stamps and/or ink colors. This is a simple and quick handmade gift! Make your own gift basket! For teens you could fill a drink tumbler with nail polish, nail files, chapstick, a sunscreen mini tube, fun
pens, and a mini notepad. For gardeners you could fill a basket with gardening gloves, seed packets, a gardening magazine, and a few gardening tools. Make beach-inspired jewelry. Gather seashells you have collected over the year to make a special bracelet or necklace. Then drill a tiny hole into a seashell -- either by using a power tool or by tapping a nail gently into the shell with a hammer. That will be your pilot hole. You will need to make it slightly bigger to feed the cord or chain through the shell, so once more very gently move a nail between your fingers and wiggle it in the hole to file the hole and make it larger. Finally, feed your cord or chain through the shell. Your handmade holiday gifts will be cherished for years to come! JP
New Equine Assisted Therapy Program & Community Demo Days ONCE PER MONTH, NOVEMBER–JANUARY 2055 NAALAE RD., KULA With great joy, Equine Assisted Therapy of Maui opens its therapeutic services to the community this fall and winter. It is offering community demonstration days once a month during the months of November, December and January. Equine Assisted Therapy is an experiential modality in which horses work with people (children, teens, adults, families and groups) to address personal growth/development and mental health needs. Sessions are conducted by a team including a certified therapist, an equine specialist, and of course horses! The team works under the EAGALA model, the global standard for equine assisted
psychotherapy (www.eagala.org). Benefits include healthier communication, relationships and boundaries; improved attention; confidence and selfworth; and better problem-solving and leadership skills. Previous horse experience is not required. A portion of your session’s proceeds goes to Maui Youth Ranch, a rescue facility for abused and neglected horses. To register for a community demo day or for more information, contact Amardeepa at 808.740.1529, email EquineTherapyMaui@gmail.com, or visit www.AmardeepaTherapy.com/equine

Our Keiki Girl scouts
Girl Scouts of Hawai'i The Girl Scouts of Hawai'i Leadership Program uses STEM, outdoor experiences, community service, and entrepreneurship to instill courage and confidence.
A
s the premier leadership development organization for girls, Girl Scouts of Hawai'i is truly paving the way for the next generation of young women. Celebrating a milestone centennial anniversary, Girl Scouts of Hawai'i is committed to its long-term mission to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. At the organization’s core is the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, which equips girls with valuable life skills and the foundation they’ll need to succeed in future endeavors. Surrounding the Girl Scout Leadership Experience are the key fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), outdoor experiences, community service projects, and entrepreneurship. In an ongoing effort to expose scouts to the STEM fields, Girl Scouts of Hawai'i is always offering opportunities for scouts to explore these new subjects as they recognize that careers in the STEM industries are certainly within their reach.
In addition to its dedication to STEM education, Girl Scouts of Hawai'i is also well known for its iconic cookies, which serve a larger purpose. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led business in the country, and introduces scouts to the valuable “five life skills”: goal setting, decision-making, money management, people skills and business ethics. And of course, let’s not forget camping! Situated in secluded and breathtaking Makawao, Camp Pi'iholo is an intimate, tree-shrouded getaway featuring a kitchen and well-furnished lodge area that can accommodate up to 35 people. Scouts love escaping to Camp Pi'iholo where troops can take advantage of both the outdoor program and conference programs. For the past 100 years, Girl Scouts of Hawai'i has helped girls develop their full potential, relate to others with understanding and respect, and contribute to the betterment of the community. Through the generous support of the Hawaii community, Girl Scouts of Hawai'i will continue to build girls of courage, confidence and character for 100 years to come.
STEM Fest is the premier annual event for scouts from kindergarten through 12th grade to explore a diverse range of STEM careers through one-on-one interaction with female STEM professionals who love what they do. This year’s STEM Fest on Maui took place on Saturday, September 23 at Lokelani Intermediate School. STEM Camps are also held every summer for Girl Scouts across the state.

Our Keiki nutrition
Natural Ways to Boost Your Keiki's Immune System
P
roactively investing in your children’s nutrition is essential to boosting their immune system. One recommendation is to feed your kids whole, real and nutritious foods, and to avoid processed “fake” foods. Processed foods often contain sugar, which is a known immune suppressor. According to www.yourkidstable.com, some great foods to feed your family include sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots, spinach, swiss chard, onion, dried herbs, citrus fruits, peaches, bell peppers, berries, tomatoes, peas, broccoli, papaya, eggs, flaxseed, high quality fish oil, beef and garlic. “We do a whole food diet with plenty of vitamin ‘sea’ and vitamin D. I try to add kale, chard and spinach into as many dishes as possible. I also begin many of our dishes with a garlic
and onion saute, which have proven immune building benefits,” shared Melissa McKim, Maui mother of four. Adding probiotics to your keiki’s diet also boosts the immune system. Good sources of probiotics for children can be found in healthy yogurts, kefir and supplements. Annette Burgess, R.N. and Maui mother, uses probiotics to boost her keiki’s immune system. She said, “We are lucky because the Upcountry Farmers Market has a local coconut kefir vendor. The kefir is loaded with probiotics, contains no dairy, and is made on Maui!” She continued, “A healthy gut equals a good immune system.” Another way to improve your child’s immune system is to utilize high grade essential oils. Janette Cogliandro (www.jcogliandro.com) shared that she uses ‘On Guard’ from DoTerra essential oils (or the equivalent in other brands) on the bottom of her four children’s feet, and/ or diffuses the oil in their rooms at night. By reducing sugar and processed foods, eating whole and healthy meals, and adding probiotics and essential oils to your keiki’s life, his or her immune system will likely get a healthy boost. JP

Our Keiki Spirited child
Tips for Parenting the Spirited Child By KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.
S
pirited children are those that often have boundless energy, a quick mind, curiosity, and terrific negotiation skills. They tend to have wiggly bodies, and much more need for movement before feeling satiated. They may be vulnerable to getting into hot water for acting before thinking. The spirited child can be impulsive, and thus miss how others around are feeling. It is important to consider that these children need support to move to a calm state where they are best able to attend to, process and solve a problem. Events not going as expected can feel catastrophic for the spirited child. Below are some specific strategies to help a spirited child build self-regulation skills and become aware of others: • Allow plenty of movement each day for this child, both before and after school. • If sitting all day in a chair is tricky, work with your child's teacher to allow him or her a standing desk and small movement breaks throughout the day. Remember, he or she is working harder to sit still than other kids. • For prolonged sitting activities, such as dinner or church, give your child movement breaks -i.e. to go for a walk, get a drink of water, etc. • Discuss the main sequence of events for the day in advance so she knows what to expect for the day. Then your child can verbalize her feelings with you in advance, and negotiate if necessary. • For specific activities, first discuss the parameters, or the 'plan', with input from your child. Be clear and stick to what you've decided together. Let him know his reward for sticking
to the plan you've both agreed to (i.e., 5 extra minutes to play). • When something goes awry, help your child to calm first. Then find a quiet place so she can tell you what happened and how she felt about it. In this way she will feel understood by you and get practice verbalizing her feelings, rather than having a big behavioral reaction. • Talk about emotions! Verbalize a wide range of emotions in your everyday events. Help your child identify the difference between a big, medium and small disappointment/happiness/ upset/worry, etc. • Help your child consider other childrens' perspectives. You can do this by asking in advance, “How will Makena feel about …?” Or you can ask after the fact, “I wonder what Makena’s idea was. Do you think it was the same as or different than yours?” • Create family 'quiet time' daily, where all media is turned off and you and your child engage in a quiet activity such as reading, drawing, Legos, or playing a game. This will teach your child how to enter and sustain a calm state. Kiegan Blake is an Occupational Therapist, Behavioral Specialist and Director of Maui Center For Child Development. Our Keiki time management
Teaching Kids Time Management Time management is the ability to estimate how much time you have and how much time it takes to complete a task. It sounds simple, but many adults are poor time managers. So it’s hardly surprising that our children find it challenging, too. Managing time helps create peace and order, which is gentler on the nervous system than rushing. Since the world operates on a 24-hour clock system, it's helpful for our children to be introduced to the idea early on. How do we go about teaching time management to our young ones? Below are some ideas. Explain to your children the importance of good timekeeping. Take small, simple steps and use concepts your children can relate to. For example, you can say, “If you play for one hour, you will have 20 minutes to read before dinner time.” Ask your children what is important to them, and also what they know they need to do. This can be very revealing, and it can also be advantageous to an adult. Keep reading to see why! Without overscheduling or controlling, allow your children to write down their list of the things they want to and need to do. It could be in the form of a monthly calendar or a daily list. Get creative with them! Color code it, or use post-its, a special notebook or magnets on the fridge. Allow them plenty of self-expression.
Show your children how long a certain task will take by demonstrating with a clock or watch. The passage of time can be a vague and abstract concept for children, so this is a great exercise. In the process, you can help them read an analog clock, and their teacher will be thrilled they can tell the time! Teaching your children about time management can be beneficial for you as the adult. You can say, “After cleaning your room for fifteen minutes and reading for twenty minutes, you can go to the beach or park, or you can have ten minutes of screen time.” Once your children understand time and its importance, they might be more willing to do jobs that they normally think of as unpleasant. Staying on task, monitoring their time, and deciding how their day or week will look, is fun, empowering and educational for children. Both the parent and the child win. So what's not to like about time management? RG

Our Keiki Book trust
Book Trust: 1,000,000 Books for Maui's Keiki & Counting Author and educator Frank Serafini said, “There is no such thing as a child who hates to read. There are only children who haven’t found the right book.” Every child can fall in love with reading if given the right book, and that’s where Book Trust comes in. A national literacy nonprofit operating in 21 states (and delivering over 1M books in Hawaii since 2005), Book Trust provides the means for low-income elementary students to choose and own books they want to read, so they can become successful readers and lifelong learners. Research-based, Teacher-Led, & Student-Driven Studies show that interest-based choice, independent reading time, and book ownership are key factors in reading achievement. Book Trust empowers kids to choose and own their own books, selecting 1–3 books each month of the school year. Through Book Trust, students discover books they love and fall in love with reading while building a home library of about 25 books each year. Teachers enhance existing great classroom literacy instruction with “Feed the Read” celebrations each month when the books arrive, and with the independent reading time so critical to reading improvement. Teachers are further empowered to talk to parents about reading at

Our Keiki FAMILY HUI
Music Makes for Mo' Bettah Keiki By jamie mcouat family hui hawaii "There is an intrinsic joy in sharing music. It's not instructional; it's fun and within all that fun these other things take place." –Uncle Wayne Watkins
E
arly language exposure, especially through music, lays the foundation for speaking, reading and writing. Babies soak up sounds. Infants absorb clues on how to make sounds by hearing repeated words or phrases. Young children learn to speak by experimenting with different sounds, combining them into words and then connecting words into sentences. Our children’s brains expect to hear language, and they need interaction with language in order to learn it. Music is a natural way for keiki to develop these skills. When they hear words in music, they imitate gestures, expressions and hand motions; and, unsuspectingly, they are introduced to new types of verbal and non-verbal vocabulary, meanings and feelings. The rhythm, rhyme and repetition of musical experiences support children’s development, as they enjoy the sounds, tempo and words through rhythm and melody. We can help children fall in love with telling stories, reading books and singing songs.
Uncle Wayne says, “Music gives keiki access to whatever level of language they are ready for–one word, an entire verse or a song. The language in a song not only tells a story; it provides an opportunity to try new and different words and often in a rhyming pattern.” Most importantly, music is fun and helps us to express ourselves in creative ways. When kids hear a catchy beat or familiar tune, it’s easy for them to respond by clapping, making sounds with their voices, shaking their heads, moving their arms, swaying their hips, and stepping with their feet to move their bodies in different ways. Whether you’re rocking your infant, your toddler is stomping like a dinosaur, or your preschooler is striking up a spontaneous dance, music uplifts moods and can be a memorable pastime as you and your child grow together. Family Hui Hawaii has been raising resilient parents for 30-plus years by providing parent-led support groups for caregivers of keiki ages 0–5. Upcountry at Giggle Hill, Fridays at 3:15 pm; in Lahaina at Napili Park, Thursdays at 10:00 am.

Baby Keiki News • Trends • Tips Help Your Teething Baby Few things are more miserable than a teething baby in pain, and parents sleep deprived from the disruption teething can bring into the home. Some indications that your baby may be teething include red, swollen gums, a lot of drooling, sleeplessness, crankiness, and refusing food. To help combat these ailments, you may try the following tips and tools. Use a washcloth filled with ice. Simply fill a clean washcloth with ice chips, and hold it in your baby’s mouth. She will find the texture of the cloth soothing, and the cold crunch of the ice will help ease the pain. It also aids in hydration, as babies lose their appetite for both solids and milk when their mouths hurt, and they can drink the melting water from the cloth. Use a natural teething ring. “In today’s market, parents have a lot of choices to relieve their teething baby. The organic maple teething rings I offer through my handmade shop are treated with organic beeswax and olive oil,” shared Andrea Sisouvong, Maui mother of two and owner of www.etsy.com/shop/PetitSoleilMaui. She
continued, “Teething rings are meant to soothe the gum of a teething infant. The wooden ring is a natural, chemical-free, plastic-free product and is safe for little ones to chew on and play with. Petit Soleil pairs their rings with the cutest cotton fabric bunny ears, plus the terry cloth backing is the perfect drool catcher.” Make a cucumber teething ring. Supplies you will need include a peeler, knife, baby fork and cucumber. First, peel the skin off the cucumber. Cut the cucumber into 1-inch thick slices. Then place a baby fork in the center of the cucumber and twist it around to remove all the seeds. Store in the fridge until ready to use. Hopefully one of these options will help your baby find comfort. JP

Baby Keiki sharing
Sharing and Your Toddler Sharing is difficult for everyone, but these tips will move your child in the right direction.
Y
our kids are quietly playing together, so you sit down for a cup of tea. Then it happens: a battle for the same toy! Handling a situation like this can be tricky for parents and children alike. Teaching your toddler to share is more complex than simply saying, “You have to share.” You want your toddler to understand that he has a right to express his feelings of fear in letting go of the item, and also gain the important life skill of navigating conflict. Here are some effective ways to help your toddler learn to share: 1. Teach your toddler to take turns. By teaching your child to take turns with others, rather
than forcing her to give up an item, she can be reassured that her item will be returned and that she will be able to enjoy playing with it again. One way to teach turn taking is to set a timer and give each child a few minutes to play. Also, teaching the phrase, “May I play with your toy when you are done?” gives both children an opportunity to cooperate with each other. 2. Model sharing behavior every day. Use your daily interactions to model for your children the act of sharing. For example, if you are eating apple slices, offer some of them to other family members. 3. Read books together about sharing. Ask your local librarian for helpful book recommendations. 4. Play cooperative games together. One option is to play cooperative musical chairs. The goal of this game is to find ways to share (not compete for) the remaining chairs, when the music ends. It takes time to learn how to share properly, but with your example and guidance your toddler will be on his way to sharing well. JP

specialists and special education teachers, to create a unique program accessible to all children. A quarter of the spaces at Imua Inclusion Preschool are reserved for children with a diagnosed need, and the remainder are reserved for children who are typically developing. Children are encouraged to work together and to understand that everyone has different needs. In fact, collaboration is a concept that is emphasized through the long-term projects in which the children engage. Play is the work of the young child, and children are given time and space to engage in child-chosen activities. Teachers keenly observe children in an effort to tailor their plans to the group’s interests, strengths and needs. A project may last anywhere from one week to one month to one whole year, depending on the scope of the topic and the continued interest. All children participate and everyone benefits when we learn together. Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center will once again transform into a giant snow globe with its award-winning “Let it Snow!” snowfall experience returning on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from December 2–23. Snowflakes will descend on Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center’s center promenade during its “Let it Snow” shows at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Each snowfall show will last for ten minutes and be orchestrated to festive, holiday music with keiki snowflake wands. Free Starbucks hot chocolate for early arrivals will be served by jingle ambassadors. Daily special events and activities throughout the holiday season include door prizes up to $500 in value, photos with Santa, toy drive, holiday gift wrappings, keiki craft corners, holiday karaoke nights, Santa Paws’ pet costume contests, Salvation Army angel tree and more. All IN THE Ohana Ohana Gratitude Practices
FAMILY & COMMUNITY
"Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it." – William Ward
T
his time of year naturally inspires many of us to practice the art of gratitude, which can carry over into the rest of the year. Below are some ways to fill your family’s gratitude cup. Create a thankfulness garland. Supplies you will need include ribbon, fabric scraps pre-cut into rectangles, and permanent marker. To make your thankfulness garland, you and your family members simply write the things you are thankful for on each precut fabric scrap, then tie the fabric scraps onto the ribbon. Hang up the garland as a reminder of all you have to be thankful for. Bedtime is a good time to talk about what you are grateful for, and you can add to the garland each night. Make a gratitude jar. Grab a mason jar, cute scrapbook paper, and pens. Each day take time with your family to write down one thing you each are grateful for, then
store the papers in the jar. Your family can read through them together from time to time to recall all that you are blessed with. Write thank you notes. Did you receive a gift? Send a handwritten thank you note to the gift giver. Younger children can simply draw a picture expressing their thanks. Make a thank you video. Use technology to your advantage, and invite your family to make a thank you video and send it to someone you love. Read aloud together. Melissa McKim, Maui mother of four, shared, “We like reading out loud together as a family. We are currently going through the ‘Little House’ book series. I feel like it builds up our sense of family and somehow makes us thankful for each other. We all really enjoy it.” Keep a gratitude journal as a family. Over time it will be fun to see how full your hearts are because you took the time to be thankful. JP

Ohana vibes
Kids Hear Your Vibe, Not Your Words "Everything in life is vibration. “ - Albert Einstein Have you considered your own vibration? What does it feel like? Can children feel your vibration, and are they affected by it? Everything in this universe is made up of tiny bundles of energy that vibrate. According to quantum physics, vibrations resonate at frequencies that correspond to your thoughts, feelings and beliefs. These unspoken messages are amongst some of the most powerful ways of communicating. And, there's no doubt that our children are expert readers. If you interact with a child in a light and positive way, it’s very likely he or she will feel that. If you are angry and express that in your demeanor, a child may avoid you or take on the emotion you are emanating. Children instinctively decode any invisible message that comes their way. As an adult, it's your choice to ruminate in a negative emotion or to let go of it. Passing it on to children does not support or foster their growth as a human being. If you feel it's unhealthy to let a child feel that vibration, here are some ways to reset your vibe:
1. Take ownership and responsibility for your own energy field. It all begins with awareness. So be aware and conscious of your vibration in that moment. 2. Modify or recalibrate your energy field so that it's more “child appropriate.” Decide how you want to be around this child. Would a softer voice be more calming? Would a warm, heartfelt hug give them the reassurance they need right now? 3. Take time out to be silent, and find your center. From this grounded place, expand the more positive vibration you now feel. Step back into the room and see how the child receives your new vibe. Once we take responsibility for our own vibrations, a door of opportunity opens to a positive relationship with the children in our lives. And, equally as important, it's a healthier way for you to be in this world. RG
Imagine a world where you didn’t fit it - where you have no place to live or work, no real friendships and little hope of living a life that matters. For many people with disabilities there is no imagining. Many spend their lives feeling lonely and isolated, without opportunities or purpose. La’akea in Paia is changing this for Maui.
Come and Visit the La'akea Country Store!
Special needs participants at La’akea experience an inclusive, life sharing setting where they engage in a healthy and productive lifestyle. They are included and valued, regardless of ability. This year we opened the La’akea Country Store and have a new commercial kitchen underway.
Near term plans on our 12-acre campus include a plant nursery, fruit orchards, and an animal husbandry program - all steps in building an inclusive community whose positive impact changes TUESDAYS–SATURDAYS // 10AM–4PM the trajectory of our participants’ lives. Visit our store at 639 Baldwin Ave., open Tuesday through Saturday, 10–4, or online at 639 BALDWIN AVE., PAIA laakea.org.

Sandpaper People When someone rubs you the wrong way Most people come across at least one challenging relationship in their lives. Coming into contact with individuals who rub you the wrong way, like ‘sandpaper,’ seems to be an inevitable part of life. But is there a way to relate to these individuals in a graceful and compassionate way? First, it's important to identify who truly rubs you the wrong way. It's usually a visceral feeling. When you interact with or see this person, an intensely irritating feeling in your body overwhelms you and you feel triggered. Once you've identified the person, ask yourself what exactly it is that irritates you. It might be something simple like their habits or mannerisms, or it could be a deeper issue that brings something to the surface in you. At this point you have a choice. You could sit with the emotion that comes up and make peace with it. For instance, does your motherin-law’s insistence on hosting Thanksgiving dinner irritate you? Does that emotion come from a feeling of lack of control? Dinner would have to be the way she likes it, and would not include your spin on a recipe. Is it important for your voice to be heard, or is honoring what she wants more important? Whatever arises, run with it.
Family Pau Hana: Free Monthly Event FIRST WEDNESDAYS // 5PM–7PM NOV. 1ST, DEC. 6TH, & JAN. 3RD CARDEN ACADEMY OF MAUI, PUKALANI
Also, have you considered her point of view? Maybe she wants to take the weight off your shoulders by hosting. Or maybe she sees that she can only host for so many more years. Is your resentment unfounded and unnecessary? Take the time and space to decide what is more important to you. This is not a matter of being right or wrong. Perhaps you realize you actually like to manage gatherings. Maybe you feel deprived of that opportunity because of your mother-in-law. Ultimately, know that facing ‘sandpaper’ relationships and people gives you a golden opportunity to heal what needs healing in you, however you decide to handle the situation. Acknowledge the lesson you have learned, give thanks to the person (yes, you can do it!), and then move on. The next time you come across someone who reminds you of that person, you’ll be better equipped to stay with your truth when you’re with them. RG Family Pau Hana is a free monthly event for families with young children. The first Wednesday of each month, you and your keiki will sing, dance and play, or sit back and relax with friends at this one-of-a-kind evening out for the whole family. Family Pau Hana features live music from Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band, multiple food trucks, and plenty of room for you and your keiki to dance and play safely—or just get comfortable and enjoy a b.y.o.b. drink with friends. Enjoy family folk music with aloha—positive, engaging music for kids and grownups to enjoy together. Bring your own blanket or chair, and beer/ wine. Food trucks will have food for purchase. New Year's Resolutions for a New You T
he new year and making resolutions go hand-in-hand. If you are looking to improve your life in 2018, here are some suggestions on how to reach your goals. Make one small change each month. Choose twelve areas in need of improvement, and spend one month focusing on each item. You will see significant progress with consistent practice. Some areas you may consider choosing include drinking more water, eating breakfast within the first thirty minutes of waking up, getting more sleep, and ‘unplugging’ while at home. Be specific. When setting goals or resolutions for yourself, it is essential to be specific and realistic. Set time frames to accomplish goals and write down actionable steps. By breaking down your larger goals into manageable tasks, you are more likely to move forward in reaching them.
"Breakfast with Santa" at Sacred Hearts School SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9TH // 8:30AM–10:30AM 239 DICKENSON ST., LAHAINA
Create a vision board or dream board. Use old magazines to clip out images and words, and create a collage of inspiration for your office space or home. Bridgett Parker (www.bridgettlovesmaui.wordpress.com) shared, “I love that my birthday and the new year are in the same month. It helps me start off the year by really honing in on what I want to accomplish in those 365 days to become a better version of myself.” She continued, “The last two years I also came up with a ‘word of the year.’ In 2016, it was ‘believe’ and I turned that word into an acronym: Bridgett Envisions Living Intentionally Enormously Victoriously Everafter. In those moments when I felt like I was not doing the best job to reach those goals, I would stop and recite those words and realign my thoughts.” She also shared, “I also have a prayer journal and I write down even the smallest of victories. Let’s face it, we aren’t perfect; but we can celebrate small things because they matter!” JP Join Sacred Hearts School for their Annual Breakfast with Santa Holiday Event on December 9th from 8:30 to 10:30. A joyful family event with a fun morning that includes a book fair, crafts for the keiki, performances by the Sacred Hearts honors choir and halau, and guest dance performances by the Body in Balance dance ensemble. All keiki who attend will also go home with a complimentary picture with Santa! Enjoy a yummy breakfast with eggs, Portuguese sausage, fresh fruit and a pancake bar. Proceeds for this event help the Sacred Hearts middle school classes raise money for their east coast trip. Seating is limited and last year's event sold out! Tickets are $10.00 for full breakfast option or $7.00 for pancake and fruit breakfast. Tickets for breakfast are available in the school office (661-4720) or at www.shsmaui.org.

The Effects of Your Stress on Friends, Family & Colleagues According to the American Psychological Association, two-thirds of Americans are stressed. While the types and causes of stress are many and varied, there is no doubt that our stress can negatively impact our friends, family and colleagues. As human beings we are social by nature, and we need to connect with others to some degree. So what happens if we take our stress out on people we are interacting with? Our friends and family may distance themselves from us if they become the targets of our stress. For instance, a best friend may prefer to not be around us because of the way we are acting, in a time when we need her the most. Whether we are being irritating, erratic or just plain snappy, our behavior could also make our parents unnecessarily worry about us. That worry, if taken on inadvertently, could cause physical and emotional stress for them. Feeling the stress of a loved one can create a feeling of helplessness. Because we are social creatures and we do care, it is only natural to want to shield loved ones from a stressful experience. In order to avoid negatively impacting our most cherished relationships, consider one of the following techniques:
1. Identify your stressor or trigger, and prepare yourself ahead of time. Being prepared can make you feel better equipped to deal with whatever comes up. 2. When feeling stressed, be mindful of how you interact with other people. Don't act unlike yourself or bottle up anything you need to express. Instead, act consciously in their company. 3. Enjoy the moment with others by putting your stress aside. If you really want to visit the stress later -- and that's a big “if” -- put a post-it note on it for a later date. Perhaps spending time with those colleagues will make your stress feel insignificant, and you'll be ready to let go of it. 4. Put yourself in others’ shoes. Perhaps they are feeling stressed, too. They might be looking to spend quality time with you. Honor your relationship with them. If stress is a frequent visitor in your life, take a moment for yourself and decide how you best want to spend time with a family member, friend or colleague. At the end of the day, the present moment is all we have. RG

Team Sports versus Individual Sports Not all kids are alike. And while Keoki down the street may flourish playing on a soccer team, Kai is more of a solo player and likes individual sports. Both individual and team sports have their pluses and minuses. Let’s check it out… Individual Sports Individual sports such as surfing, swimming, wrestling, or tennis can offer a child a chance to go at their own pace. The focus can be to work hard at doing better themselves (get a better score, a better swim time etc.) rather than “win.” Additionally, your child can be on a team but still compete individually. This allows them the camaraderie of teammates, but lets your keiki excel on their own. Team Sports Team sports such as football, soccer, or paddling all involve teamwork. Your child must learn to work together with other kids to get to that common goal. This will allow them to both rely on others and help others when needed.
So which one should your child do? Let your child try them both out. They can do soccer one season, and then swimming or tennis the next. See which one allows them to excel. You may see that your child doesn’t like to be the focus of attention, so a swimming race all on their own may not be the best. On the other hand, make sure that if they do a team sport, they aren’t overshadowed, or don’t feel as if they're lost in a crowd on the field. Ultimately, you want your child to feel empowered and you may find they excel and enjoy both individual and team sports. Both can help them hone skills that will help them in life as they get older.
