Our Keiki News • Trends • Tips CREATE A SUMMER BUCKET LIST

LIVE PONO GO SOLAR & SAVE!

buck·et list: noun : number of experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime.

It’s summertime. Time for adventure, exploring and making new memories. Start summer off with a fun bucket list created by the whole family and get ready to have some fun. Let’s make a summer bucket list Bucket list items don’t have to be crazy or expensive, in fact many times they can be simple pleasures or excursions that you just don’t always do; this is what makes them fun. Gather the family and start to make a wish list of items the kids and you want to do. This can be written on a piece a paper and posted on the refrigerator or you can make it a big poster that you let the kids decorate after with stickers and little drawings.

Need a little inspiration for your bucket list? Here are some items to get you started. 1. Watch the planes take off at Kahului or Kapalua airport (or a nearby location) 2. Collect shells and make something out of them 3. Take on the road to Hana 4. Have a campout

Once you have your list, it’ll act as a guide on what to do during those long summer days. Let the kids pick one a day or other days you can surprise them.

5. Go on a submarine ride

To make things even more fun, you could write your list on popsicle sticks. On each popsicle stick write one bucket list item. Throw the sticks into a jar and each day when you are trying to figure out what to do, pull out a popsicle stick and ta-dah, that’s the days fun bucket list item.

8. Go on a train ride

6. Take the Kapalua Village Trail all the way to the duck pond at the top 7. Spot a sea turtle, while in the ocean 9. Stand up paddle 10. Make a lei and give it to a visitor Have fun with your bucket list and make those memories this summer! SB

BEAT SUMMER BOREDOM

HC&S Pub: M Family Size: F

It takes a little nudging to get children motivated. But once they get started, there’s no stopping them. “I’m bored” Those two words are enough to make any mom or dad want to pull their hair out. But with nearly 100 days of summer vacation, they are words that we will all probably hear at least once (ok, probably a lot more than once). Here are some super fun and easy things to keep those “I’m bored” blues out of summer vacation. Go on a photo tour Grab an old iPod, camera or buy a disposable one and let your kids go on a walking photo tour. This can be done anywhere - the beach, on a hike, or even just around town. It’s always fun to see what your kidlets think is cool enough to take a picture of. Beach it and try a new one Make a list of the beaches on Maui that you haven’t yet visited or ones that you love but may be on the other side of the island. Go visit one a week to spice summer up. Treasure hunt of seashells Create a list of shells for your little ones to look for. They can be little pukas, seaglass of different colors or cats eye. Or have them go on a treasure hunt of hearts. See how many shells or rocks they can see that are in the shape of a heart. This is always fun.

Hiking Get them walking. The exercise, outdoor air and exploring will rid them of any summer boredom blues. Make sure to bring plenty of water and make it more fun by making it a photo walk or treasure hunt (see ideas above). Get crafty Grab some craft paper and hang sheets on your fence outside. Let the kids go crazy and paint until their hearts desire. Or grab some sidewalk chalk and let them make a new masterpiece each day. At the end of the day take a photo to preserve it and then just wash it away with the hose. SB

Our Keiki FaMILY MATTERS

How to Set Boundaries By KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T. • State the behavior you want to see (not the one you don’t). Instead of saying, “you can’t yell indoors”, how about “you can use a medium or quiet voice indoors”). Be specific so it is clear to your child. • Use a calm and warm, yet firm demeanor. • Set your child up for success! Set up opportunities for catching your child doing well! • Create opportunities for positive praise; this tends to be more effective than punishment strategies such as time out or taking something away. When your child keeps arms length body space for example, give praise and reflect about how that made the other person feel good.

Ahhh

… the balance of giving your children choice while also providing a sense of order. Creating “boundaries” are critical for setting a sense of safety and security for your child. Boundaries provide predictability, consistency and contingency, which are the fence posts of their secure perimeter. With a fence line in place, the child can go about focusing on their daily activities and feel safe to takes risks as well as make mistakes. Boundaries provide the arena for the child’s physical, emotional and intellectual growth. Here are some tips to consider for setting boundaries:

• Let your child know in advance what the expectations are. Verbally, and ideally review them on a white board or another visual medium. This provides the opportunity to have a conversation and make sure the child understands. • Create “House Rules”- Just a few, post them and review them regularly. • For active kids, you may need to set up “body space” and “play space” boundaries. Use visual cues. Your arm stretched out front is a good boundary for body space and putting colored tape or a large sheet on the ground may be ways to set up a play space boundary.

• Set behavioral boundaries that the child has in their repertoire (not that you wish he had). If your child is very active and can’t help wiggling out of his dinner chair after 5 minutes, then it is not an appropriate expectation to stay seated for 15 minutes; in this case, prolonged sitting is a skill that needs to be developed incrementally with positive reinforcement. Sitting for 3 minutes may be a good place to start to build this skill. • Be consistent. Don’t set up a boundary you can’t follow through on. • Encourage discussion about boundaries so that she can see the boundary is based on rationale and may change over time and circumstance rather than a boundary that is arbitrary and rigid. (This doesn’t mean it is up for negotiation, just understanding). • Don’t have too many rules! • Save time each day for doing something fun with your child. He will listen better to you when he has an abundance of shared pleasurable experiences with you. Our Keiki GROWING UP

Make Summer Memorable Children do grow up quickly. Here are some tips to help treasure the moments. With all the camps, beach trips, hikes and lazy days of summer, give your child a way to save all of the memories. Your kids will love to look back on them for years to come and share with grandparents or those that are far away. Capture it Whether going away on vacation or making it a staycation, let your child take photos on a disposable camera. Your kids will love having a camera of their own and being surprised when they see the prints. Frame it up After they’ve developed their photos, create a collage. Let your keiki help with the layout. Once done, frame it and hang it in their room. Stick a magnet on it Create magnets out of photos by using magnetic paper found at most office supply or craft stores. Attach a photo to it, cut around the photo and then hang your magnets on the fridge as summertime art.

Create an old fashioned scrapbook Have your child collect ticket stubs, or other memorabilia from their summer fun. Create a scrapbook of photos and other goodies, letting them design it. The younger ones can dictate what to write on each page. Go techy Let your older child create a private website online. They can use platforms such as wordpress or blogger to create sites that can only be seen by those that have the password. Let your child share photos and write stories about their summer time fun and then their loved ones, near and far, can log in to read them and stay up to date. SB

eading with your child is enjoyable for you and your child, a special time spent together maybe cuddling on the sofa, when you both have each other’s full attention, shared only with the subject of what you are reading about. Don’t be fooled to think otherwise, if you do not see the joy in it, you have something to unlearn before you can begin the experience of reading with your child. Don’t make it feel like a test or a school exercise, read for fun. You don’t want your child to feel they can fail. It does not really matter what reading level you or your child picks, the subject is much more important. All you need is for your child to be interested in the content. Most children are interested in most things they can understand, especially if it means having your undivided attention. Don’t just read to decipher words, read for meaning. Make comments as you read (like: that’s nice, or not nice) or voice your emotions

(with interjections such as: oops, aah, or yeah!). And encourage your child to do the same thing. Read actively, not passively. Help develop critical thinking, by saying things like: Why do you think [the character] did/said that? What would you do in that situation? Awaken your child’s imagination. Before you turn the page, and/or at the end of the book, ask: what do you think will happen next? Say what you think too. Take turns reading. This will encourage your child. Read one sentence or one page each, or your child can read the first sentence and you the rest of each paragraph, depending on the difficulty of the text. Anytime your child hesitates on a word, whisper the word to them. And, my rule is if a child has hesitated 5 times on a page, I read the rest of the page, slowly enough so that s/he can follow. I have only had great times reading with children in that way. Try it, and please let me know how it goes. I love to hear from my readers (ebetham1@gmail.com).

Our Keiki FUN

Set summer screen time limits Creating clear guidlines for kids to follow With school out and schedules thrown out the window you may find that little Johnny is spending more time with electronics than he is with you. Don’t fear, there is a way to get the kids away from the ipad without anyone getting hurt. The key for setting limits on screen time is to create, and stick to, clear guidelines and rules for electronics during summer - but you can also make it fun. Here are some tips: Schedule it Since summer days are long and without a schedule of sorts, the way to get the kids not sucked into Minecraft all day is to schedule their screen time. If the kids know that they get to be on the computer from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. every day, and that it’s a hard and fast rule, they should soon be cool with the new “summer hours.” Your job is to be consistent. Let them have the electronics as the rules state and make it end when the time is up. Set a timer so that there’s no confusion as to when screen time is up. Make them earn it Have fun with this one. Have the kids do chores or good deeds and after so many, they get a certain amount of time on the iPad. Or for every adventure they take or new skill they learn, they get minutes towards their screen time. Keep a chart and maybe even make it a contest between kids. Competition has a funny way of making everyone participate.

Popping Up this Summer! For event dates + locations: mcb-c.com or tel 808 215 9240

Make it fun and do good Allow the kids a certain amount of minutes on electronics each day. Use pennies and pop one into a jar for every minute they are on screen time. Start them with 60 pennies. If they were on for 15 minutes, they need to pop 15 pennies into the jar. Once they’ve used up all their pennies for the day, no more screen time. Or make it like an arcade game and have them pop in 25 cents into the jar for every 10 minutes on the ipad (we only wish arcade games lasted 10 minutes!). This can also help when two siblings are sharing one device. Set a timer and when the ten minutes are up it’s the next child’s turn after the 25 cents are paid. The added bonus! Take the money at the end of the summer, cash in the change and donate it to a cause you all believe in. Now that’s screen time doing good! SB

Live Theatre at MAPA this Summer! Live theatre is blossoming this summer at Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA). With two musical productions performed by MAPA students, there’s something for everyone! Disney’s Cinderella Kids runs July 24-27 at MAPA’s Steppingstone Playhouse in Queen Ka’ahumanu Center. Performed by the young actors from MAPA’s Youth Musical Theatre Camp, the classic fairy tale comes to life with charming characters, fabulous costumes and toe-tapping show tunes. Pippin, performed by the students of MAPA’s Teen Musical Theatre Camp, runs July 5-13 at MAPA’s Steppingstone Playhouse. With an infectiously unforgettable score and razzle-dazzle dancing, the musical tells the story of the young Prince Pippin, son of Charlemagne, and his search for the secret to true happiness. With mature themes, Pippin is rated PG. For show times and ticket information, visit www.mauiacademy.org or call (808) 244-8760.

Model Respect “The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.” –Denis Waitley One of our main goals as parents is to prepare our children to live responsibly and with integrity. There is no perfect formula for turning out great kids who then become great adults, however, here are a few techniques that we can add to the parenting tool belt: Model Responsibility Yup, the old adage is true, “More is caught than taught.” So when you wonder why your daughter leaves her backpack and toys and books all over the living room, remember how you handle your personal items. Are they neatly put away or piled high on the coffee table? When we as parents take responsibility for our belongings our children see it, then they know it’s important, too.

“Do as I say, not as I do,” is not the sage advice of a well-seasoned parent. If you desire your child to treat others with respect and treat themselves with respect, then you must do the same. Sometimes that may mean that mommy and daddy take time for a date to nourish their relationship, or perhaps mommy takes a walk to keep fit and relaxed or daddy gets in some surf time. When we take care of ourselves, we let our children know to care for and respect themselves as they grow up, too. By modeling responsibility, a strong work ethic and respect we give our children the wings they need to grow into independent, responsible adults. JP

Model a Strong Work Ethic Families provide a basis for learning how to serve one another and work together, thus creating a sense of belonging and importance. When children see their parents working hard it fosters the understanding that work is important. Giving children tasks in the home,

Summer Safety Tips

STOP YELLING! How to Have Patience with Your Kids

Stay safe on land and in water!

“Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.” –Rumi Parenting is a tough job and having patience with our children is a skill we need to master. Here are some ways to help us as parents stay calm, cool and collected:

misbehavior. Acknowledge and empathize with your child’s feelings, while still maintaining the proper boundaries you have set up, like no talking back, yelling, etc.

Watch for Signs

Allow for Natural Consequences

Watch for signs that you are on the brink of being impatient. Perhaps you’re hungry, tired or worried--determine what triggers your anger. If you find yourself heading in that direction, correct it, i.e. grab a snack, take a break, spend time in prayer or meditation, etc. Do what it takes to calm down.

According to “Love & Logic” by Dr. Foster Cline and Jim Fay, when parents allow for natural consequences to occur and offer sincere empathy to their children, it gives children a sense that they can make choices and learn from their mistakes. An example would be instead of telling your six-year-old to remember to pack his surfboard for the beach, you simply let him remember. If he forgets his surfboard, then offer empathy (no yelling or reprimand). It’s a safe place to learn a lesson of responsibility, and he’ll probably remember his board the next time around.

Try Whispering Instead of yelling, try whispering when you need to get your child’s attention. He’ll wonder why you’re being so quiet and it will probably help diffuse the situation. Take Time to Listen In the heat of the moment you and your child may need time to cool down. Take a short break then come back together. Listen to your child’s heart to find out the underlying need behind his

Your child is still learning and growing, so having patience is essential. By giving yourself time to cool down, allowing for natural consequences and recognizing that your child is in a process, hopefully you’ll be encouraged. Remember to take it one day at a time, one moment at a time. JP

WATER SAFETY 1. Never turn your back on the ocean. 2. Never swim alone. Swimming in numbers dramatically reduces the risk of injury and drowning. 3. Pay attention to signage on the beach for dangerous conditions.

HELMET SAFETY Wear a correct fitting helmet when riding your bike or skateboard! 1. The helmet should sit level on your head and low on your forehead–one or two finger-widths above your eyebrow. 2. Center the buckle under the chin.

4. Know your limits. When in doubt, don’t go out. 5. Swim only in safe, lifeguarded areas. No one can anticipate changing ocean currents, rip currents, sudden storms, or other hidden dangers.

3. Adjust the side straps to form a “V” shape slightly under the ears. 4. One finger should fit between the chin and chin strap. Shake your head. If the fit is right, your helmet will stay on tight.

Baby Keiki News • Trends • Tips Pediatric Acupuncture

Babysitting from Hawaii’s #1 Childcare Provider

By christine asucncion Acupuncture isn’t all needles. It can be an alternative way to address colic, common colds, asthma, ear aches, eczema and more. Acupuncture needles for children?...YES!!! You can treat keikis with needles quite effectively, and no… it isn’t ouchie. However, in Oriental medicine we usually administer treatment without needles using a Japanese acupuncture method known as shoni-shin. It is a technique using rhythmic stroking, rubbing, tapping and/or pressing the skin to produce a variety of gentle stimulation sensations along the channel pathways of the body. Rounded tools, including stones, shells, jade, silver or gold probes are typically used. Shoni-shin is well received by both infants and children up to 10 years old. Giving acupuncture to preteens into the teenage years is also a healthy solution, especially in those transitional periods. Pediatric acupuncture is well tolerated, safe & effective and doesn’t leave the child with undesirable side effects. It addresses conditions from colic, to common colds, asthma, to earaches to digestive issues such as constipation & diarrhea. It has even shown success in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), allergies, eczema and hives. It has the ability to address emotional disturbances like anxiety that can lead to more health concerns such as night frights, bedwetting or stuttering.

BUILDING SUPPORTING STRENGTHENING

Acupuncture via shoni-shin work by understanding that a child’s bio-energetic systems are in the “yang” phase and not fully developed, meaning their energy (Qi) moves very quickly & on the surface. Because of this they can easily be influenced so their response to treatment is readily experienced. However, because they are still developing they are susceptible to invasion. Hence, acupuncture is a great resource to harmonize, balance and strengthen the child’s immune system making it strong enough to fight & ward off disease pathogens. It is highly recommended for a baby/ toddler to receive wellness acupuncture prior to being exposed to social environments such as a preschool or daycare. The use of Chinese herbal medicine is also an invaluable resource used to treat children’s ailments. Strengthening the child decreases illness!

A PREGNANCY DIET The old adage “eating for two” doesn’t help mothers make smart eating choices. Only 300 more calories per day are needed for the growing baby and these calories, in addition to the ones mothers need for themselves, should be as healthy as they can be. This isn’t a time to constantly indulge, but rather, a time to be more vigilant. Start by eating foods in their natural state. Don’t eat a lot of packaged foods which are usually filled with additives. Also, relying on prenatal vitamins to pick up the slack of a lack luster diet won’t give you and your baby everything you need. Don’t skip breakfast because you need to replenish your nutrients after a long nights sleep. Try to stay away from alcohol and limit the intake of caffeine as it crosses the placenta and is hard for the fetus to metabolize. Remember that some foods like mercury laden fish, deli meats, and unpasteurized dairy product should be avoided and if you need to fulfill a craving that may have empty calories look for a healthy substitute first – your baby will appreciate it.

Boost Your Baby’s Brain Power Through Affection Developing a close bond with your baby provides a healthy start for your relationship and it’s great for your baby’s brain development! Here are some simple ways you can increase your connection to your baby and strengthen your baby’s brain power. Cuddle time. Everyone needs hugs, but especially babies! Holding your baby and forming a proper attachment with him is the most important influence on brain growth. By responding to his needs, nourishing him and loving him, you are creating a foundation for healthy brain development. When these fundamental needs are neglected, the resources normally used for brain development are instead used for basic survival. So keep your baby close for optimum brain development.

2014-‐2015

Providing a comprehensive curriculum for children th 18 months through 8 Grade

Talk and sing. Talking to your baby, yes even baby talk, improves your baby’s brain power. So, go ahead and do the sing-song voice…your baby’s brain will thank you!

Smile often. Let your baby know just how valuable he is with your tender eyes, your warm tone of voice and your shining smile. Your loving ways help your baby feel secure and significant.

Be attentive. As a parent it’s easy to become distracted. However, your baby looks to you to learn how things operate in life. Each time you respond to your baby, whether it be to his cries or to his coos, connections are being made in his brain. By meeting your baby’s needs promptly, you are aiding in the process of good brain development that will help him throughout life.

Connect face-to-face. A newborn baby’s vision is the least developed of the five senses. By holding your baby and looking into his eyes, you are not only helping him develop his vision, but you are also deepening your bond of love. Babies are fascinated by faces, and especially enjoy looking at their mom’s face!

Read together. Studies have shown that it’s never too early to start reading to your baby, even in the womb! The tone of your voice as you read the story is soothing and further deepens your bond. Babies that are read to frequently, also tend to excel in reading and mathematics as they grow up. JP

Project Backpack “Equipped to Learn” Help contribute to the annual community service project of The Kiwanis Club of The Valley Isle The Kiwanis Club of The Valley Isle partners with different agencies to provide a backpack with supplies specific to a child’s grade and school. On that first day of school, the backpack and school supplies give the students confidence and equips them to succeed. There are three ways that someone can help. 1) Sponsor a Child: Choose a student from the list (or 2, or 3) and provide a new backpack with all supplies for that particular student or students. 2) Provide Supplies: We will put together donated supplies to complete students’ needs. 3) Cash Donations or Gift Cards: ALL donations are used to purchase supplies to complete students’ needs that are not covered by supplies donated. At an average cost of $60 a student, your generous support is truly needed. Anything you can provide will be much appreciated. Just $1.00 will help! Have a Summer Party Summertime is ripe for a party! Don’t worry about an occassion, just have the kids help plan the fun! While Maui is pretty gorgeous year-round, there’s something about summer that just calls for a party. The sun is hot, the water is warm and there’s no school the next day. Hooray!

#1 Rated IMAC “School of the Year for 2006 & 2007” Master Paul Main IMAC “Coach of the Year”

Parties are so much more fun when they have a theme. Here are three ideas to help you get your party on this summer.

ONE FREE WEEK AND UNIFORM HALF PRICE Build Confidence and Self Esteem!

Movie Under the Stars: With warm(er) summer nights, it’s the perfect time to have an outdoor movie party that doesn’t break the budget. Sure, you could rent a blow up movie screen but you can also use a large white bed sheet hung on the side of your house or in between two trees outside. Throw down some towels or blankets and large pillows (you can have each guest bring their own pillow), pop some popcorn, have a huge tub filled with drinks and hand out fun candy snack bags for each guest as they arrive. Make the movie a summer flick such as Finding Nemo, Surf’s Up or an old classic like Gidget. Sand Castle Fun: A sand castle themed party is pretty simple to do and is perfect for the Maui babes. Just gather a ton of buckets and sand molds (or make it BYO-Toys), and let them have at it. You can have a contest for whoever has the biggest, craziest, or tallest sand castle. Make it a theme by serving lunch in a sand bucket (that they can use later to build that castle) and send them home with a goodie bag that’s filled with construction themed little toys. Be sure to have a sunscreen “bar” to keep the kiddos sun-safe and plenty of drinks to keep them hydrated from all that fun. Classic Games: There are just some games that scream summertime. Make it a backyard extravaganza with fun and timeless games for the kids to take part in. Go old school with these fun ideas… A water balloon fight, a slip in slide contest (there’s always extra points for a little spin-action), super soaker fight (create targets so they aren’t always shooting at each other), bean bag tosses, a good ol’ game of bocce ball or horse shoes, or Twister on the grass - spray paint a twister board onto the grass and have some fun. Complete this old school party with a classic BBQ of hot dogs, hamburgers, lemonade and fruit on a stick! SB

MAUI STUDENT EMPOWERMENT Maui Student Empowerment (MSE) is aimed to do exactly as its name says-- to empower the youth of Maui. Cofounders, Jasmine Doan and McKayla Wandell have always had, not only a dream, but also a passion to see youth realize their potential and to never stop dreaming. Their aim for MSE is to organize workshops that encourage students to collaborate with other youth on Maui on community based projects, and give them the training and resources to expand their student-led projects. Some of the current projects with MSE involve a monthly Google hangout session to talk about Global issues, a project to help lead sustainable lives, and an idea in the works to interconnect all of the high schools news into one site, a newspaper for the youth of Maui. Decades of Experience

Support to Alleviate the

PRESSURE By DR. KELLY HArNICK From West Maui Counseling Center

Elizabeth A. Ivey Rhonda M. Fosbinder* Elizabeth A. Ivey James H. Rhonda M.Fosbinder* Fosbinder

The

roles modern women are expected to uphold can be overwhelming; wife, mother, professional, friend, sister, auntie, daughter, and community member to name just a few. There is so much pressure on women to “have it all” and to achieve success both personally and professionally that there’s not much time left for fun or self-care. It’s no coincidence that prevalence rates of clinical depression and anxiety are highest among women. Depression can creep up on us at the MOST inconvenient times. It can happen after the birth of a child (postpartum), during major life transitions like moving or changing jobs, after a traumatic loss, during times of financial distress, or because of hormonal changes. Usually, it’s a combination of cumulative stressors that build up over time and a biological vulnerability that come together to create that perfect storm, and boom! You feel

like someone on one of those antidepressant commercials. Not good. In my work, I have seen this pressure to fulfill multiple roles and obligations leave my female patients with the belief that they are not good enough because they aren’t managing to “do it all” quickly leading to symptoms of Clinical Depression. Depression is very, very treatable with the right plan and the right fit with your provider. But first, it must be understood as a VALID clinical illness. Telling a person struggling with depression to “just get up” or “don’t feel bad” is like telling someone with a broken leg to go run a marathon. Impossible, and not fair! Those feelings of fatigue and low energy can be cumbersome. When the kids need to get their homework done but you can’t concentrate and just don’t feel like doing anything, you then feel even worse, guilty. The good news is that if depression has crept into your life that it can and will get better with the right help. Challenge the belief that you are not good enough and reach out because you deserve support. Dr. Kelly Harnick is a Licensed Psychologist and Board Certified in Clinical Psychology. I was a new volleyball coach, I would often over-react if the kids didn’t meet my standards. For example, balls shouldn’t drop without a body on the ground. If they didn’t dive, sometimes steam would pour from my ears and I’d scold ‘em, then run ‘em.

Punishments by nature are punitive and usually lead to resentment. Teaching a student with resentment is similar to fitting a circle peg in a square hole. I wish I could go back and help that young coach with some tips on how to give consequences: 1. KEEP IT LIGHT – Scolding the kids for a mistake? I should have taught them! 2. GET THE CONSQUENCE OVER WITH QUICKLY – I ran the kids for a few minutes when we could have been practicing volleyball (instead of running). 3. CONNECT IT TO THE STANDARD – Having the kids run when they weren’t diving is totally disconnected. A good consequence is to get the offender to dive a few times on the side. 4. CONTINUALLY CALL IT OUT – Sometimes I made the kids run, which gave them permission to dive sometimes. You’ll get more of what you tolerate! It’s important to know that the kids are not testing YOU as much as they are testing which values are important under your leadership. The great basketball coach at UCLA John Wooden understood this – he always allowed the kids to test him as long as they quickly fell back into line. Punishments, although rarely effective, can be useful -- but only after repetitive, flagrant and disregard for the standards. And it seems that over the years, I find fewer and fewer situations that require punishments.

Family Travel How to Make the Most of Your Trip Travelling with kids is never easy. Here are some tips to make the trip a little less stressful and more fun for the little ones.

H

eading off island this summer? Feeling a bit nervous and stressed? Use these simple strategies for a stress-free and fun travel time with the family this summer. Pack light Summertime means warmer temps so you can pack lighter. If staying somewhere that has a washer and dryer, remember that you can wash your clothes while on vacation so there’s no need to pack your entire wardrobe. Speaking of laundry If your vacation destination has a washer and dryer, try to wash your clothes before heading home. It’s so nice to return home with clean clothes to put away instead of a laundry pile. Stop the mail The US postal service makes it easy for you to stop your mail for a specified amount of time. Even better? You can do it online at www.holdmail.usps.com/ Unplug Unplug your appliances before leaving town. This can save you energy and keep your house safe. Bring an extra pair of clothes on the plane Pack an extra pair of clothes for your little one and for yourself. You never know what kind of accident can happen on the airplane. Bring snacks Pack healthy snacks for the plane ride and make sure everyone drinks plenty of water so that they don’t get dehydrated. Pack a meal Don’t have a feeding frenzy in the airport or

spend tons of cash on the airplane meals, instead bring your meal from home. Be healthy and cash conscious. Bring books No matter the age of your keiki, bring a couple of books to keep them occupied while flying. Books are quiet and don’t take batteries - score! Have tech, will travel However, an iPad can be a parent’s best friend on a long flight. Load it with cool learning apps, books and videos prior to your day of travel. Remember, it can take a short while to download any movie so be sure to leave time before you leave. Pack surprises Wrap a few little gifts (notepads, stickers, small travel toys) and let your keiki open a new one as the flight progresses. The gifts break the monotony of a long flight and offer a new activity for your little one to do with each passing hour. SB

Ohana BALANCE

MY DAUGHTER, A SPECIAL OLYMPIAN By TONI ROJAS When she was born I knew my baby was special. Call it Mommy intuition, but I could feel her needs being so much more than I ever expected. My daughter, Nikilani, was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specific (PDD-NOS, depending on who you talk to), and is now a flourishing 18 year old representing Hawai`I with her Maui teammate, Fae Torres, at the 2014 Special Olympics National Games in New Jersey, June 14 – 21, 2014. Needless to say, our family is proud and elated. After trying our local community soccer team, we could see that her cognitive and physical abilities were not of her peers, and although other soccer parents were supportive and understanding, we knew she would need long term special attention and training to participate. So with her steadfast desire to do well and try that much harder, we took that energy, ran with it, joined Special Olympics Maui, and have never looked back. Special Olympics has been part of our lives since she was 8 years old. From bocce ball to soccer, track to bowling, and softball to swimming, every season we encouraged and cheered, and so did all the other families. That’s what makes Special Olympics Maui really special, the network of families and their athletes is strong and we hold an unspoken bond. We understand each other’s challenges as parents and caregivers, support one another in times of need, and cheer for all our athletes as one ‘ohana. Every success we celebrate together, and feel the pride as if they were our own. It is through visionaries such as Eunice Kennedy Shriver (1921-2009), as founder and honorary chairperson of Special Olympics and executive vice president of the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation that our special children can benefit from sports training and competition. She was a leader in the worldwide struggle to improve and enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities for more than three decades.

The mission of Special Olympics Maui is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for over 200 children and adults with intellectual disabilities on Maui, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skill, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. That’s exactly our experience and we encourage other parents to consider joining this special organization should you feel your keiki need some extra support. For more information on Special Olympics Maui sports, to sponsor an athlete or discuss volunteer opportunities, please contact Regional Director, Adrienne Laurion at 281-7318.
