Gratitude

in Times of Stress Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Amit Sood said, “Look for reasons to be grateful — even when you’re struggling. Taking time to give thanks for even the smallest blessings can help you appreciate the good things in your life.” These simple, yet wise words are a reminder that, no matter what life brings us, being positive can help shift our perspective. To kick start your path to gratitude, consider the following suggestions.

9 | www.mauifamilymagazine.com

Our Keiki GRATITUDE

Be grateful for having a healthy, well-functioning body. The human body’s organs, structure, and myriad of systems come together to form a complex, well-functioning physical being. Start your day by giving thanks for the miracle of life.

Slow down your busy, chaotic lifestyle. Do less and focus on what’s most important; this is better for our adrenal and nervous systems, and our hearts. Cancel unnecessary appointments, postpone meetings, and be realistic with your schedule and commitments. Life is not about getting through a to-do list; it’s about being happy and enjoying the simple, precious moments.

Focus on your family and friends. Set aside time to be with them with an open heart, and truly feel the loving bond between you. In stressful times, our closest relatives

can bear the brunt of our negative attitude. By being conscious of the way we interact with them, we can deepen the connection and enjoy each other even more. Dinners, family game nights, writing postcards to friends, listening to music or playing instruments, are a few ideas for getting together in fun, meaningful ways.

Remember that community kindness goes a long way in times of need. Do you have neighbors who have trouble getting out because of their age or health? Consider helping them with chores, picking up groceries, doing yard work, or just knocking on their door to check in on them. Make the most of your mobility and good health by taking care of those who make your life rich and rewarding. Life can throw curve balls all the time, but how we react to them is what makes us who we are. By being in a state of genuine gratitude, we can foster more thankfulness, love and kindness, which makes all the difference to ourselves, our family, our friends and our community. Try it today and see how you feel. —RG

Our Keiki ‘OHANA MEANS FAMILY

Delightful Poi “This is ohana, the loved ones we hold, who give thanks for the sun, all bright and bold, that warms the wind on which stories are told, that lifts the rain to the valley fold,...” -Excerpt from ‘Ohana Means Family by Ilima Loomis

W

e talk to Maui mom, writer and author Ilima Loomis about her new children’s book ‘Ohana Means Family. In the cumulative style of The House That Jack Built and paired with distinctive illustrations from Kenard Park, Loomis celebrates an island favorite: Poi. Your book ties food, culture, and a sense of place so beautifully. Of all the traditional Hawaiian foods, why did you choose poi for your story? IL: Poi is an iconic Hawaiian food that’s not well understood outside the islands and is even seen as a curiosity. I wanted to show it for the beloved food that it is. Also, I love poi! I grew up eating it, so it holds a special place in my heart.

For those who have never tried it, how would you describe the taste and texture of poi? IL: I usually tell people it’s a thick, starchy paste. It’s cool, smooth, and a little gluey. You can say the taste is bland, but actually there are a lot of subtle flavors. It can be tangy or sweet, depending on how old it is, and it has a subtle earthiness. I grew up eating it with laulau or kalua pig, or just plain with a little Hawaiian salt. Now there are a couple of places where you can get it in an açai bowl and I love it like that! What do you hope readers will take away from the story? IL: I hope that readers in Hawaii feel the book does a good job of representing poi and the important role it plays in the islands. More broadly, I hope that readers reflect on how food connects us with the environment, the land, and each other.

“The Sleeping Beauty” presented by Alexander Academy Performing Company FRIDAY, JUNE 5TH–SUNDAY, JUNE 7TH SEABURY HALL’S ‘A‘ALI‘IKUHONUA CREATIVE ARTS CENTER, 480 OLINDA RD., MAKAWAO Four performances throughout the weekend will showcase the talent and skill of over 150 student dancers from ages three years old to adult. Executive Director Danelle Watson reflects, “It is exciting how we stayed connected through COVID-19 by having online classes and rehearsals. This show will be especially appreciated when it comes to stage by our performers, and by our audience after being isolated. Artistic Director

Absalon Figueroa has been motivated and inspired to create a unique version of the beloved story to fit our academy’s needs. He is closely attached to the music and ballet since performing in the orchestra and onstage as a dancer with the Orlando Ballet. Our Keiki FITNESS

Getting Fit with Your Kids If getting fit is on your wish list, but you also feel the tug to spend time with your family, don’t lose hope. There are ways to combine the two. Check out the following suggestions for how you can include health and exercise into your busy family life.

 Take baby steps.
If you feel fitness starts with a healthier diet for your family, be realistic with goals. In the beginning, your family may find it challenging to give up unhealthy snacks. Over time, you can introduce them to healthier versions of foods and they should start to come around. For example, choose reduced-fat milk or cheese rather than full-fat options. Or, add vegetable toppings to pepperoni pizza. Slowly, reduce the amount of pepperoni, and choose thin crust rather than full crust. In other words, small incremental changes can be easier than going “cold turkey” all at once.

Start early.
Exercise first thing in the morning with the family. Most people feel less energized as the day goes on, so a short workout before breakfast is a great way to start. Be flexible with your time and discuss the plan with your children so they feel valued and heard.

Choose child-friendly workouts. If you have young children, find an activity that allows you to watch them while working out. For example, walk or jog with your child in a stroller or baby jogger. In general, the bigger the wheel on the stroller, the better. Aerobic dancing or a fitness DVD can be a winner because they’re fun for kids and there’s no need to leave home.

 Schedule family workouts.
If your children are older, consider a game like tennis or riding a bike. Consider ditching your local tennis court in favor of one out of your area. Try an off-road bike trail. Kids like variety and new adventures. While these may take more planning, if your children are motivated and willing, go for it!
Working out doesn’t have to clash with family life. Take the time to talk with your children and plan an activity that meets everyone’s needs. With a little thought, you could be on the right track with a happy, healthy family! —RG

Our Keiki MAUI HEALTH

Talking to Kids About Scary Topics BY MAUI HEALTH

From hurricanes and earthquakes to pandemics and terrorism, diseases and disasters are affecting families worldwide. What is the best way for parents to talk to their kids about it? First of all, remain calm. “Kids do best if their parents are calm and measured,” said Gene Beresin, Harvard Medical School Psychiatry Professor and Executive Director of the Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds at Massachusetts General Hospital, in a HuffPost article. “Anxiety is contagious, and when parents are fearful or bent out of shape, kids of all ages are going to pick up on that.” The next step is to ask them what they know, before offering up your own thoughts. This allows them to tell you what they’ve heard first and give you an idea of how they are dealing with it. Plus, getting the worry off their little chests will help make them feel better. Maui Health, which operates Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital and Lanai Community Hospital along with island clinics, understands these are stressful times for you and your family.

“Parents are the emotional and spiritual reservoirs for children. They will naturally be drawn to you for reassurance and information. Guarding their best interests requires taking difficult circumstances and focusing on the essentials. Then we have to present this information simply and in the least threatening manner. Our goal is to share fact-based information that allows for hope and comfort.” More tips include emphasizing good hygiene, framing school closures as positive, limiting media exposure, sticking to routines, talking about community, looking for nonverbal cues such as depression, keeping their minds and bodies strong with positive activities, discussing plans, and including them in preparedness by allowing them to help you create emergency supply kits.

Communication should be developmentally appropriate. For young children under 6 years of age, don’t volunteer too much information. Simply answer your child’s questions, reassure them, and give them hope.

“One idea for having your children help plan and pack emergency supply kits is to make it a game - like a scavenger hunt,” says Thompson. “Don’t forget to check expiration dates and have kids help with remembering and doing that, too. The more you make it something regular and ordinary, the better.”

“Distress and apprehension about a disease can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in adults. Think of how our children might feel,” says Dr. Ben Thompson, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Most of all, keep talking. Reassure them that they are safe and that it is OK if they feel upset. And when you need to, tell them, “Mom and dad may not have all the information now, but we’ll let you know as soon as we do.”

Our Keiki CLEANLINESS

Good Hygiene Habits for Your Kids Practicing good hygiene is crucial to our health, no matter our age. As adults, it’s our job to help our kids understand how to be healthy and why it matters. Here are some tips for keeping your kids hygienic in general, and especially during the spread of COVID-19. Education First, explain to your kids that your skin acts like a filter for your body. The skin is like your “armor”; it keeps germs from getting into your body and protects the tissue and organs inside your body. Tell them good germs keep them healthy, but bad germs can make them sick. Hand washing Correct hand washing is vital. Tell your kids to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds — the amount of time needed to sing the alphabet song or the ‘happy birthday’ song twice. The longer you wash, the more germs will be washed away. Lace your fingers together and wash in between each digit. Don’t forget to lather up the thumbs and wrists. Clean nails by scrubbing them against the palm of the hand. Rinse well with running water. Using hand sanitizer Buy each of your kids their own hand sanitizer and tell them to use it before and after being outdoors. Explain to them how germs are spread by touch; so if they touch their friend’s water bottle, they have just shared their germs with that friend. If their hands are germ-free, then touching the water bottle will not pass on germs to their friend. Keeping hands off Taking your kids to the store can be challenging when it comes to hygiene. Most young ones will touch any item that grabs their attention

— be it food, a toy or a book. More than that, kids touch counters, registers and shelves. Try taking small toys to the store so their hands are busy and full, or make up a game to see who does not touch anything in the store. Consider letting your kids wear gloves when you shop — soft plush velvet or superhero, or any glove that keeps their hands protected. Praising good hygiene When your kid practices good hygiene, with or without your prompt, compliment their wise choice. Every kid likes to be praised and told they are doing well. Make a point of how their behavior is not only good for them, but also good for those around them. Using tissues Get your child into the habit of covering their mouth and nose with a tissue when they sneeze or cough, or sneezing or coughing into the crook of their arm if they can’t reach a tissue fast enough. Consider buying your kids their own box to use when they want to pick their nose! Taking steps to ensure your kids are hygienic will contribute to overall health and wellbeing. With some education and a little creative distraction, shopping as a family can be stress-free for parents and safe for kids.

Our Keiki MAUI CENTER FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Preparing Your Child for Big Changes BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.

C

hange offers an opportunity to support adaptive emotional coping in your child, which can prepare her for life. Here are guiding principles: Offer some consistency. Create a rhythm for the day; it doesn’t need to be rigid, but should have some elements of predictability. This will be the stable base in the face of other upcoming changes. Create a sense of safety. Make sure you have increased face-to-face time with your child, which includes the sweet intimate parts of his routine that may include physical closeness and affection such as having a snack or reading a story together. This is the glue for your child’s emotional sense of security. Decide what to say. Think about how to frame the information about the upcoming change in a way that matches your child’s development. Decide how to say it. Be authentic and calm in your facial expression, voice and body language. You need to convey that you and she are safe. Think about timing. Discuss the change when there is time for your child to digest your information and for you to respond to your child’s questions. Explain why. Let him know that the change is related to the adults or other factors, not to him. Break the big change into small manageable pieces. Perhaps address one week at a time.

Use a visual. Map out the week with your child on a large white board or large piece of paper by drawing pictures of what is coming up. Use colorful pencils together. Add and cross off activities as the week progresses. Check in daily. Set aside a quiet moment to talk together about what you each think went well in the day and what was a bit tricky. This keeps you in the loop of your child’s inner world. Plan together. When planning for the upcoming week, reflect on what went well and what was tricky in the previous week. Then problem solve together to make changes. Solve problems together. When your child brings up a worry, help her create a ‘menu’ of possible solutions for her worry. This is a great opportunity to help your child generate solutions around her big feelings. Monitor yourself. Do what you need to stay calm. Consider looking at the news only twice per day. Incorporate movement. You and your child will need daily movement to discharge your internal stressors and worries. Celebrate perks of the situation. Which special games might you be able to play; which kinds of foods can you make; or which projects can you start while you are at home? Find humor and laughter in daily events. Baby Keiki

“Singing nursery rhymes with young children will get them off to a flying start,” she says. If singing is new to you, rest assured there is help. The top tip is to forget about the quality of your voice; open your heart and sing as though you’re alone in the shower. Whether you’re a parent, family member or caregiver, you can enhance the experience by making eye contact, smiling and nodding. These signals help make your baby focus on you and feel more connected as you sing.

According to Sally Goddard Blythe, a consultant in neuro-developmental education and director of the Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology, singing helps with the development of language. “Song is a special type of speech,” says Blythe. “Lullabies, songs, and rhymes of every culture carry the 'signature' melodies and inflections of a mother tongue, preparing a child's ear, voice, and brain for language.” U.K. education expert Beverley Hughes says singing even helps with math. Research shows how music and rhyme increase a child's ability in spatial reasoning, which can help a child's abilities in math and science.

Patting their back, hugging and rocking will also help them relax and will increase the bond between you. But singing does more than assist with child development; it also helps reduce stress levels for parents. It changes the brain by moving musical vibrations through you, which alters both your physical and emotional bodies. Think of it as a dose of the perfect tranquilizer; it soothes your nerves and elevates your spirit at the same time. And it has no negative side effects! Next time you’re looking for an opportunity to give and receive love from a sweet, heartfelt experience, hug your baby and sing to your heart’s delight. Savor the moment when your baby smiles and their eyes light up. It’s good for them and for you. —RG

Baby Keiki HAWAII DENTAL SERVICE

Share Aloha with Your Keiki, Not Germs BY HAWAII DENTAL SERVICE (HDS)

These days, avoiding and eliminating germs, viruses and diseases are on top of every parent’s mind. Because our mouths are the gateway for germs to enter our bodies, Hawaii Dental Service (HDS) wants to share some oral health tips that parents and children can practice every day to help limit the spread of harmful viruses and diseases. Avoid sharing eating utensils, food and drinks. It’s common for parents to share their forks, spoons and chopsticks with their little ones. But the sharing of these utensils can easily transfer germs from one body to another. HDS recommends parents always have a separate spoon or fork on hand for their children. When it comes to sharing food, parents will sometimes chew on the food to soften it for young children who have just started incorporating solid foods into their diet. This method, which may seem helpful, spreads germs and bacteria significantly faster from parent to child. It’s also important to limit the amount of finger foods and make sure all hands touching the food have been washed properly. Sharing drinks is also an easy way for germs to spread through the mouth. Always have a sippy cup or a separate cup for your child.

Avoid sharing toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste. The sharing of a toothbrush, floss or toothpaste within a family (even between parent and child) may lead to several health problems. This is because every mouth may harbor hundreds of different bacteria and viruses which can be transferred from mouth to mouth. It also makes both users susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease and oral infections. Sometimes brushing may cause the gums to bleed, which means sharing a toothbrush could expose your child to a bloodstream disease. Every person should have his or her own toothbrush, floss and toothpaste at home. Brush, floss and visit the dentist! The best way to keep your child’s smile healthy is to remind him or her to brush twice a day, floss daily, and visit their dentist regularly. Poor oral health directly impacts a child’s overall health. It’s common for tooth decay to cause pain and even affect your child’s ability to eat nutritious foods. Sharing these healthy habits helps your family combat germs so you all can Live Well, Smile More.

Pregnancy Sleep Solutions A pregnant mama can be a tired mama due to the ever-growing belly and pressure on her back and bladder! Here are some tips to get a better night’s sleep during the warmer summer months.

Grab a body pillow Extra pillows are a pregnant woman’s best friend. Get one for behind your back and one for between your knees. These will help relieve the pressure and give you much needed support to feel comfortable.

Keep a cool room Being pregnant makes you hot. Add to that the heat of the summer months, and sleeping can be nearly impossible. Summer is a great time to invest in an extra fan for your room. The humming of the fan can also help lull you to sleep, so this is a two-for tip!

Bring in the lavender love Lavender has a wonderful calming effect. Take a lavender-filled small pillow and lay it next to your bed or under your larger pillows. The scent will help you settle into a calm and peaceful place so you can get some zzzzz’s.

Baby Keiki COMMUNITY MATTERS

Support Local with Compassion and Connection

T

he need to support local businesses has never been so critical as it is right now. Without continued support, families risk losing athletics, art and dance classes, and a gamut of after school programs and services for our kids. We may think we can cancel now and register later, but the reality is these programs may not exist later. Help can come in many forms, so jump in today to nurture all the things you love and want to see stay for many years to come. Keep in Touch If a program has been temporarily closed, call your coach or teachers. Let them know you’re thinking about them and thank them for what they provide. A simple call can give a small business owner hope, energy, and enthusiasm for the future. Offer a Hand Volunteer your expertise or time. Help clean up, bring in snacks, or offer to run errands. If you have business acumen, share guidance on strategy, marketing, and finance. Extra hands can alleviate some administrative burdens and create more time for them to do what they love.

Give them a Follow Follow your favorites on Instagram and other social platforms. Make their day by commenting on their posts and tagging them on yours. Sign up for mailing lists and be in the loop of any changes or new offerings. Spread the Word For any program you authentically believe in, let your network know and encourage them to learn more or participate. Write a review online or share it directly with them to use for marketing. A trusted recommendation goes a long way to a program’s growth. Expore Online Education In the midst of these uncertain times, some organizations have created virtual programs. This can be a surprising opportunity for them to build a new offering for the community, so participate and offer your feedback. Sponsor a Family If it’s within your means, offer to sponsor another family’s registration fees. This generous gesture can keep a team together, buoy a family’s spirit, and enrich a program. Through various challenges, the Maui community has answered the call to work together for the future we want to see on the island. Let this time be no different, and let compassion and connection lead the way. —AT

‘Ohana CULTIVATING GRACE

As parents, our children look for us to know how to respond to many events in life. You may have experienced your child falling down, and with an uncertain face, looking to you for your reaction. When we have an exaggerated and frightened response, they react in kind. When we come to them with a stance of, ‘you are okay, let’s see how you feel when you stand up,’ they also are able to have a calm response, even when they feel scared and even when they need to cry on your shoulder for a few minutes. In this current time we are living, with a global pandemic circling the earth, we still can model behavior and response for our children, no matter what age they are. When so many things feel beyond our control, it’s important to pay attention to what we can have a hand in.

Limit screen time. It is challenging to turn off our screens at any time, and even more so when we feel like we need to keep up with what is happening. This is also true for our children. Consider limiting their time, and your own time, on screens. Notice how you feel when you step away from the news and social media. If you have older children,

invite them to notice how they feel too. Play games, walk outside in nature, or invite your children to cook with you. This is a wonderful time to invite more play into all of your lives.

Bring mindfulness into your family’s daily life. Young children are naturals at this; as we get older, we become more distracted. An easy way to approach mindfulness is with your senses. The shower or bath is a natural place for this. Notice the water on your skin, the smell of your soap, and the texture of the washcloth. Talk to your children about this, and invite them to notice their many senses.

Invite gratitude into your day. This can help to shift the perspective when times feel tough. Take turns with your children as you all say aloud or write down the things in your life for which you are grateful. They can be small or large. The most important thing is to take the time to notice them and spend some time considering them. If you want to go a little further, you can ask your children how they feel inside when they think of all the things for which they are grateful. —KK

‘Ohana MEDITATION

Walking Meditation to Ease Anxiety This meditation can be done anywhere, but when you take it outside into nature, you double the benefits. Begin by feeling both feet on the ground, and notice how the weight of your body is supported by the earth. Shift your weight back and forth, rocking from heel to toe and back again. Taking slow, deep breaths, become aware of all the sensations around you. What do you hear and smell, and how does the air feel on your skin? Begin to take slow steps, feeling each part of your foot lift off the ground, and then feeling how each part of your foot reconnects with the earth. Let any worry and fear in you release through your feet into the ground. Follow your breath as you take one step at a time. -KK

‘Ohana CALM FEARS

Five Ways to Calm Your Fears Worldwide pandemics. Global warming. Local weather emergencies. Below are five helpful ways to ease your fears amidst the swirling uncertainty. Identify triggers. Facing fear is the first tool. If you ignore your fear, the anxiety over it may linger. Instead, identify the things in life that are causing you to fear. Is it a person, place, activity, social media platform, event or memory? Once you identify the trigger, determine how you can adjust your thoughts, interactions and habits to minimize or eliminate the trigger in the first place. You can journal your fear-based thoughts to get them out of your mind. Release them as you write. Naming the fear, rather than ignoring it, gives you power over it. Analyze the situation. Allow yourself to look at the reality of the situation and possible outcomes. If the worst possible outcome were to happen, what would be a healthy, productive way to respond? “The most powerful words in the universe are the words you say to yourself” (Marie Forleo, Everything Is Figureoutable). So, what are you saying to yourself about the situation?

Complete a task. Accomplishing a task can spark a feeling of joy, temporarily directing your attention to something other than the fear or anxiety. It doesn’t have to be a complicated task; it may be as simple as taking out the trash. Just do something that puts you into action. Meditate. To meditate, begin with pausing and recognizing how your body is responding to the current moment. What are you thinking? What do you physically feel? Break free from the fear habit by slowing down your breath. Feel all the feelings, then release them. Meditation goes hand in hand with the last tool — focusing on affirmations. Focus on affirmations. Overcome fear by speaking positive truths in your mind and aloud. A few to practice include: All situations are temporary. I’ve survived all of the difficult moments of my past. Every breath I take fills my soul with ease. I am calm and mindful. —JP

‘Ohana HEALTH

Are You Harming Your Immune System? BY ME-SHELL MIJANGOS

O

ur immune system is how our body fights off all pathogenic viruses, bacteria, fungi, toxins, and other invaders that do not belong in our body. During a time when there is a barrage of tips on how to take care of our immune system, it is essential to know what can also harm the immune system. Here are five ways you may be putting your body at risk. Lack of Exercise What better way to bond with your child and to support a robust immune system — exercise. Research shows routinely performing bursts of high-intensity activities is best for building immunity (like swimming, at home high-energy dance parties, or HIIT classes).
Too Much Sugar If your sweet child is starting to act more like a sugar monster, you are not alone. Kids today are constantly bombarded with sugar, to the point that many of them are addicted. This is leading to a whole host of problems, including difficulty focusing in school and/or at home, a childhood obesity epidemic, and, of course, a weakened immune system. Now, that does not sound sweet!

Not Getting Enough Water Water makes up 60% of body weight and helps the body to flush out toxins and illnesses. So drink up and make sure your kids do the same. Lack of Sleep Proper sleep is crucial for a robust immune system. Generally, toddlers need 12 hours; children aged 3 to 6 – 10-12 hours; children 7-12 years olds need 10-11 hours; and teenagers need about eight to nine hours. Chronic Stress Excess stress can harm your immune system, but unfortunately, reducing stress seems to be on the back burner for most people. If you are one of those people, start simply by making it important to laugh. Watch your favorite movie, tell silly, made-up stories with your child, or practice laughing at yourself.
Remember to do your best to improve your self-care in any one of these areas. Taking small, actionable steps will gradually strengthen your immune system.
