Our Keiki

Crafting a Summer Fairy Garden

Story + Photo by Maile Crewdson

As a keiki, one of my favorite childhood memories was building a fairy garden with my ‘ohana. My parents decorated a tree stump with teeny-tiny windows and itty-bitty steps winding around the wood, climbing slightly higher as they went, leading to a fairy-sized door. It was magical. The perfect hale for mythical creatures to come and dwell. This project, along with a handmade giant bubbling volcano (that actually erupted) are things we did together that now, even in my 30s, I look back on with such joy. The quality time, the creativity. Things I strive to cultivate with my own keiki.

Crafting a summer fairy garden is a project I did with both my six-year-old and four-year-old. Encourage your keiki to walk around your house or street together, gathering items. This is a time to play and notice the various textures, colors, and shapes of rocks, sticks, flowers, and plants they might find. How about asking neighbors if they have any of these items to share? Let these ideas inspire you, there’s not one “right” way to create and you can do this in one day or more.

Materials

• Medium to large size vessel for your fairy garden

• Dirt and/or sand to fill your vessel

• Rocks, of various sizes and colors

• Twigs

• Flowers, fresh herbs, or plant cuttings

• Seashells

• Popsicle sticks

• Scissors

• Paint/paintbrushes

• Wood glue

Optional:

Bird feeder or wooden house, smooth glass pebbles, moss, colored beads or costume gems, small terracotta pots, ribbons or string, hot glue gun (an adult should help younger keiki), Mod Podge for sealing any painted/glued surfaces

Instructions

1. Pick a place in your garden or yard for your fairy garden.

2. Set out your vessel (can be a wood/ceramic planter pot or box or wicker basket, ideally with small drainage holes) and fill it with dirt or sand. *If space allows, you can always forgo a vessel.

3. Visualize the space and how you would like to set up your fairy garden. Keiki can practice drawing sketches of where they want things to go and what they hope it will look like.

4. Once you have a rough plan, set out paints and craft items and allow keiki to make the fairy home out of twigs, popsicle sticks, or a bird feeder. Gems, pebbles, sticks, or moss can all be glued onto the fairy home. Let your keiki’s imagination be their guide.

5. Create fairy “furniture” such as tables and chairs, ladders or bridges, etc. to help tell the story of this space.

6. Anchor the fairy home and furniture throughout your space, by pressing it into the dirt or sand. You can weave rocks in a pathway or make a stream out of blue-colored glass, as an idea. Likewise, little sprigs of fresh rosemary look like miniature trees.

Talk, Read, & Sing to Your Keiki

According to a study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics, almost 60 percent of American children start kindergarten unprepared, lagging behind their peers in critical language, math, and social-emotional skills. Research shows that during the first years of life a child’s brain forms one million new neural connections every second and absorbs information like a sponge. This is why simple, everyday interactions with young children—like describing objects seen during a walk or bus ride, singing songs, or telling stories—can better prepare them for school, and lay a strong foundation for their social-emotional development, health, and lifelong learning.

Turn small everyday interactions with your child into big brain and language building moments. Stop and talk or sing to your child during these moments to help with healthy brain development and build on many different skills.

• During bath time

• Driving to and from school or daycare

• During meals or snacks

• Before bedtime

• While shopping

• During a walk outside

• During play time

Talking, reading and singing really touches on so many different protective factors to help strengthen families and shield them from different risk factors that they may be exposed to—from societal and community risk factors to stressful situations. Have you talked with your child today? Take a moment to ask them questions about their day, what they observe, or their feelings. Even if your baby does not communicate yet with words, talking, reading and singing can help with bonding with your infant/child as well as healthy brain development.

Kākou for Keiki and Ho‘oikaika Partnership developed the “Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing” campaign to give parents and caregivers the tools to talk, read and sing more with their young children from birth, increasing meaningful interactions that are critical to healthy brain development.

Pono Outdoor Program

In November 2021, former Department of Education employee Bianca Antonio decided the distance learning paradigm was not working for her and her two children. Her passions for teaching, reacquainting herself and others with indigenous ways, foraging native plants, and spending time in nature were all integral components in her development of the unique educational program, the Pono Outdoor Program. Antonio's outdoor-centered program currently runs five days a week with students between the ages of 5-12. Her enthusiasm and love for the children is obvious as she describes what makes this program special. “We are 100% no waste. When we’re in the forest no one will know we’ve been there. Even down to the books. We use clipboards painted with chalkboard paint and our kids use chalk instead of paper. Some of the kids discovered some coral can be used as chalk. We have to allow them that safe space to explore.”

The day is primarily student-led. Meaning, students progress through their curriculum at their own pace, students choose the location for the day and what activities they’d like to do, as well as leading the daily ho‘oponopono circle which teaches conflict resolution and healthy communication skills. Building confidence and striving to exemplify the values of aloha, respect, and kuleana are integral in every activity and lesson at Pono Outdoor Program.

The freedom and fluidity of the schedule along with the ‘ohana feeling they strive for amongst the community has wide appeal. In just a year and a half the program has grown from two students to forty, with a growing waiting list. All students are registered homeschoolers. Families have the option to attend full-time or parttime and all students are accepted regardless of any physical or learning differences.

Envisioning Pono Outdoor Program’s future, Bianca shares big plans. She hopes to one day have their own land to farm and learn on that could increase enrollment; as well as finding a way to offer free tuition for every student. In the more immediate future, they are looking for a middle to high school specialist to help expand the program to serve older students.

For more information on the Pono Outdoor Program go to ponooutdoorprogram.org or call 808-298-7275.

Family trips are exciting! They are also fraught with changes in routine, transitions, and unexpected events. Here are some tips to help you and your youngster to prepare for an upcoming trip:

• Create a preview of the trip. Look at pictures of where you will be going, such as your auntie’s house or a hotel. You may even want to make a small picture book together of the upcoming trip that your youngster can look through in the days/weeks leading up to the trip. This allows them to be prepared for what is coming up and creates anticipation.

• Pace out the excitement! Plan for days that are more relaxed as well as downtime during each day. This will help your child regulate all of the new experiences.

• Plan for the travel day. You can plan together what items will be important to take for the plane ride/car ride in advance and pack their backpack together.

• Body needs. Practice doing a “body scan” daily before your trip to teach your child to pause and tune-in to their body sensations: Is their body hungry, thirsty, tired, or does it need to go to the bathroom?

• Sleep supports. Plan together if there are any items that will help your child to sleep on the trip and pack them.

Traveling with Small Children

• Movement. If you have a long day of travel, try to have your child do robust physical activity the day before to help get their wiggles out, as well as have short movement breaks in the day.

• Comfortable clothes. Pick out travel clothes in advance with your child and go for what your child feels comfortable wearing.

• Headsets. Consider bringing headsets for your youngster to block out noisy environments and listen to audio stories and songs.

• Keep your routines. Try to stick to your regular sleep and eating routines while on your trip. If your child is particular about food, bring food you know they are likely to eat.

• Daily check-in. Check-in with your youngster to let them know what is coming up for the day, and give your child an opportunity to ask questions in advance.

• Daily quiet time. Take a mid-morning and mid-afternoon quiet time break where you wind down, snuggle and do quiet activities. This may involve having a snack under a tree or in the car. This break helps your child have the bandwidth to adjust to all of the exciting sights and sounds as well as unexpected events in the day.

Summer Reading Success

“Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. It should be offered as a gift.” –Kate

Jim Trelease’s Read-Aloud Handbook, 8th Edition, recommends making summer reading a requirement and giving young readers the power to choose what will pique and sustain their interest. Self-selecting and reading for pleasure are powerful and foundational motivators for lifelong readers. Here are some questions to consider:

How do we read? What counts as reading? Remember books aren’t the only way to read. Newspapers, comics, magazines, games, and audiobooks are all ways to “read”. For young children, holding a book, turning pages, understanding the way we read text, and looking at pictures are all important parts of early literacy skills.

What encourages us to read?

Think about what will make an optimal reading environment at home. Are there a variety of reading materials lying around for the family to discover? Think about creating a reading nook (make it cozy and welcoming and make reading independently and together a daily routine. Model reading to and for your keiki—show them all the ways you enjoy reading (however that looks for you) and read out loud!

Family Memberships at the Maui Ocean Center

Summertime equals beach time. But what happens when you’ve had a little too much fun in the sun and you’re looking for some other activities to keep your keiki active this summer? Try teaching them about the ocean surrounding us.

Family memberships at Maui Ocean Center include unlimited access to the park not only all summer – but 365 days a year. In addition to the regular perks of being an annual member, this year’s members are receiving a special T-shirt made with recyclable materials in honor of the aquarium’s 25th anniversary.

“Our responsibility, our kuleana, really is to add value first and foremost to our community,” says Maui Ocean Center’s General Manager Tapani Vuori. “To me, it’s about inspiring people with the beauty that’s underneath the ocean’s surface. We want to make sure that every single person in our community, especially our families and keiki, get to experience this beauty.”

Since opening in 1998, Maui Ocean Center has aimed to foster wonder and respect for Hawaii’s marine life — and help protect it for future generations. Whether it’s walking

through a 54-foot-long underwater tunnel surrounded by sharks and rays or coming eyeto-eye with a humpback whale in an immersive 3D film (for ages 4 and older), Maui Ocean Center seeks to inspire our keiki as it brings them below the water’s surface.

Expect to find family-friendly demonstrations and interactive activities, such as experiencing marine animals up close at the outdoor Tide Pool tactile exhibit. Throughout the park, your keiki will learn how our host Hawaiian culture connects to the ocean and lands that sustain us.

“We’re constantly developing new content, whether that be in our presentations or even in our main exhibit halls,” adds Maui Ocean Center’s Director of Education Jessica Colla. “We’re changing out our animals all the time so there’s always something new to see here.”

Visit mauioceancenter.com/membership to purchase an annual membership. The ‘Ohana Flex Pass includes two adults and two children (ages 4-12), while children ages 3 and younger are always free.

A donation is made on behalf of each membership purchase to the nonprofit Marine Institute at Maui Ocean Center to support saving sea turtles and coral reefs here on Maui.

If you’re looking to help the environment and give back to the community this summer, consider picking up trash as part of the Marine Institute’s “Honu Hero” beach cleanup program. And that beach time will have lasting impacts well beyond this summer.

Important Milestones for Body & Brain Development

As human beings, each developmental stage plays an important role in developing both body and brain. During the first seven years of a child’s life, the child goes through several necessary milestones, such as rolling over, sitting up, crawling, standing and walking.  Each of these milestones is necessary in completing stages of development to create a strong foundation.

Starting in utero, where the baby is already developing her first senses and reflex movements, the pregnant mother moves about, helping her unborn baby develop both the sense of body awareness and the sense of balance.

When born vaginally, a child travels through the birth canal, activating early reflexes by the deep pressure massage, stimulating nerves, and giving the child its first sense of self. Working closely with the proprioceptive sense, developing the sense of touch starts here – a sense allowing us to establish boundaries, interact with the external world, connect with other human beings, and giving us the sense of where we end and the outer world begins. It is good to be aware that children born through a c-section often tend to seek and need more body awareness input.

Upon birth, the baby goes into a full extension of their body: arms, hands and legs extending out.  She has a quick intake of breath, freezes momentarily, and then totally contracts into a fetal position, releasing her breath, often resulting in a cry.  This cry is important because it helps clear out her lungs, giving them a kick start, and allowing the baby to breathe. Then she’s swaddled, kept warm and held close –giving her a sense of well being in her new environment. When her cheek rubs up against something, she immediately starts to root around for a source of food.  Once she finds the nipple, her sucking reflex is engaged.

Earlier movements help free our bodies, readying them for more complex movements and tasks. Once we learn to stand up and walk, the whole world is opened up to us and new movements are explored.

One of my mentors likes to say, “You can’t make a flower grow by pulling on it.” Imagine if we hadn’t learned to stand; we certainly couldn’t learn to jump. We must provide the appropriate support and time so that our children will not only grow, but they’ll be able to fully blossom into their full potential.

Protect Keiki from Falls

When it comes to keeping your keiki safe, you might think about things like car seats, sharp objects or ocean safety.

But did you know that falling is the top cause of pediatric injuries that lead to ER visits in Maui County?

We know our kupuna are at risk from falls, but we forget that falls can also be dangerous for kids. Young children are top-heavy - they have big heads - so they are more likely than adults to fall head first. This can cause concussions or other serious head injuries.

The risk of injury from a fall generally increases as the fall gets higher and/or the surface they fall onto gets harder.

One of the biggest areas of concern is windows. Remember that screens are not weight-bearing and are meant to keep bugs out, not keiki in. To keep children safe, move furniture away from windows and install window guards or jams to prevent children from being able to open them enough to fall out. Teach your children never to play around windows.

Other common causes of pediatric fall injuries are shopping carts and highchairs. Even though they don’t seem very high off the ground, they are often used on hard surfaces, so when children fall out and hit their heads, it can cause serious injury. Keep kids safe by strapping them in and always keeping them within your line of sight.

Look for other high-risk fall locations in your home and other homes your children frequently visit. Add soft rugs on surfaces where

children are likely to fall, like at the bottom of stairs or around beds. Discourage children from climbing anything taller than them and teach them why this is dangerous.

If a child does fall, and the fall was significant, they should see a doctor. Look for signs of head injury, including headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion, sleepiness, vision problems, and difficulty walking or talking. Symptoms may start right away, but sometimes they show up hours or days after the injury.

Any time a child loses consciousness after a head injury they should get medical attention. But if they have trouble waking back up, or if they pass out hours or days after the original injury, that is a possible sign of bleeding in the brain, and it is an emergency. Call 911 and seek immediate help.

Falls can be dangerous for children, but there are things you can do to reduce the risk. By taking precautions, and knowing the signs of serious injury, you can protect your keiki from traumatic injury. For more information on keiki fall safety, visit mauihealth.org/keikifalls.

Falls can be dangerous for children, but there are things you can do to reduce the risk. Take precautions and know the signs of serious injury. Protect your keiki and help them stay safe by:

COMMUNITY. EXCELLENCE.
PEOPLE.

Today we use smartphones, tablets, and other smart devices for everything from taking selfies to watching videos, playing games, and studying. Ironically, aside from sports, one of the growing causes of traumatic dental injuries is due to smartphone popularity in daily life, leading to a new type of dental injury: Facial trauma from falling phones.

Smart device dental injuries in kids impact them more than dental injuries in adults. This is because children are still developing physically, with less dexterity and fine motor skills. They may drop their phones more often and may receive more injury when it happens.

Smart device dental injuries also vary by age – the risks are different for younger children compared to teenagers:

• Children ages 2–5 – at risk due to soft facial structures and jaw pliability, suggesting less force is needed to cause severe injuries.

• Children ages 2–6 – at risk for loosening or shifting teeth from usual positions, or lip bruises.

• Children ages 6–12 – those texting, video chatting, or on social media at highest risk of lip bruising, tooth loosening, and related dental injuries.

• Children over age 12 – those taking selfies are at risk for tooth injuries and lip bruises.

Smart Devices & Dental Injuries

What to do if your kid gets a dental injury

Do you know what to do when your child has a toothache, prematurely loses a tooth, or receives dental trauma? Here are a few things to keep in mind in case of a dental emergency.

• Familiarize yourself with common injuries.  Toothaches, tooth displacement, and knocked-out teeth are common dental injuries. Learn which injuries require immediate attention, which require less urgency, and how to treat common scenarios. Discuss with your dentist to develop an emergency plan for care.

• Have your dentist on speed dial. Keep your dentist in your contacts, know their service hours, and if they have an emergency contact number or process.

• Create a backup plan. If your primary dentist is not available after business hours, ask for a referral for emergencies or use HDS’ “Find a Dentist” tool on HawaiiDentalService.com. For dental trauma, visiting the hospital ER isn’t the best option, instead ensure you visit a dental office for care. Knowing where to go for a dental emergency will help you remain calm and focused.

• Know your coverage. Not all dental plans are created equal; know how your plan’s emergency coverage works. Review your family's dental benefits to protect your keiki’s smile from the unexpected!

While smart devices are great to learn, play and grow, setting healthy limitations on screen time while avoiding use of the device above your face or head, will help your keiki live well, and smile more.

HAWAII DENTAL SERVICE Baby Keiki

According to the American Dental Association, child athletes who don’t wear mouth guards while playing sports are 60 times more likely to damage their teeth, gums, and jaw. An athletic mouth guard reduces the adverse effects of trauma and injury to the teeth and gums during sports.

Most HDS dental plans covers one athletic mouth guard for patients ages 18 and younger. Because every child deserves to play hard, live well, and smile more.

Find Your Why

But why? It’s a common question for moms and dads of young ones. As exhausting and repetitive as it can be when you’re just trying to get them clean at the end of the day, it’s actually a really useful question to ask yourself as a parent, preferably when you’re not exhausted by a full day of handling all the things—but the answer can be useful in that exact moment!

Life can start to feel a bit like the movie Groundhog Day, with one day blending into the next, a seemingly endless train of meals, laundry, and driving. Connecting with the reason behind your commitment to showing up day after day not only makes the chores feel more meaningful, but it also lightens the load a bit. When you feel really connected to the reason behind the work of it all, it gets a little less mundane and a lot more meaningful.

Uncovering your why is a crucial component to discovering the meaning behind anything you do, and especially the things that have really hard parts, like parenting. Spend some time this summer discovering your why, your real why, and you’ll both have fun in the process, and uncover more depth in every part of your life that has true meaning for you.

So, how do you find your why? It can feel a bit elusive and tricky to put your finger on. One great way to explore your why is by setting aside some time to journal about it. Maybe you wake

up a few minutes early a couple of days a week, or find a cozy corner after the kids have gone to bed to do some train-of-thought writing. A really simple way to start uncovering, or remembering, your why, is by simply asking yourself the following questions, and writing down what comes to mind:

• What is important to me about being a good parent/spouse/friend?

• Why do I show up every day for my family/ community?

• What matters to me about having meals together as a family?

• Why do I do all this (driving, cooking, cleaning, etc) every day?

• Why is it important to me to be less reactive toward my kids or my partner?

• At the end of my life, what do I want to be able to say I accomplished as a parent?

When you’re in the trenches of life, it can feel hard to see and feel the bigger picture of it all. Exploring the answers to these questions will start you down the path of greater meaning in the many moments that fill each day.

Unleash the Summer Fun

Three ways to stretch yourself and make meaningful memories

Whether you have summer plans that take you across the globe or simply to the other side of the island, it’s the season for adventure. Boarding a plane, loading up the truck, or lacing up your sneakers can all be the starting point for stretching outside of your comfort zone and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Wherever your itinerary takes you, you’ll be well served by bringing a few important mindsets with you along with your pack of snacks and ample hydration. Include these in your exploration and you’ll amplify the adventure, the fun, and the satisfaction of time spent together.

Curiosity

Even if you’re going somewhere you’ve gone before, curiosity can open the door to a whole new world of discovery. A simple example of this is looking for certain colored cars on long road trips. Take this with you and let yourself wonder about all the things you see, how they work, what might happen next, and how things have changed over the years. You could also bring a sense of curiosity into how everyone interacts with each other. Noticing both small details and bigger trends can literally open your perception to a new way of seeing the world.

Savoring

Shave ice, cool streams, and salty skin are just a few opportunities to savor the delights of summer. As you notice more of what is happen -

ing through curiosity, you’ll discover that your senses will come alive as you become more aware of what is happening in the moment. Let each new experience blossom as you take in the smells, sights, sounds, tastes, and feels that await you around every corner of your adventures. Let yourself linger in the full sensory experience of every sweet detail.

Gratitude

It’s easy to be grateful when things are going smooth, and even then it’s easy to forget. Let this summer be a time for counting your blessings. Find a way that works for your family to notice, at some point throughout the day, the many ways that life is indeed beautiful. The end of the day is a natural fit for many families, and can be incorporated into any bedtime routine, but this practice can also be a great way to start the day. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude this summer, and you might notice a shift in how the whole family relates to the twists and turns of life.

Summer is the perfect time to bring these mindsets to life, and everyone in the ‘ohana will benefit from doing just that.

Slow Living as Sacred

“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.” -Lao

Did we remember backpacks? Snacks and lunches? Water bottles and homework? Checking and double-checking for all the day’s essentials. Making sure that we get from point A to point B on time, or as close as possible. I feel the daily pressure of hurry as I shuttle my keiki out the door each day on our way to school or activities.

Sometimes I think that we, as a culture, have forgotten the value of waiting, of slowing down, of being present in the not-knowing, needing-to-wait parts of our days. But then, there’s summer: an opportunity for slowing down and embracing the extra time. Summer often means less structure because school is out and there’s more downtime.

Growing up in Ha‘ikū, I looked forward all school year long to the days of summer. They represented freedom. Freedom from taking the bus to school each day, and instead ride my bike along our street with the neighbor kids. Freedom to play in the pastures by our house, to explore beaches and to hike with my ‘ohana. We couldn’t afford big summer trips off-island so we embraced home life. We helped aunties and uncles harvest fruit and clean lo’i at our 'ohana's farm. Then afterward, we’d dip in the frigid stream water, building dams and creating deeper pools to enjoy together. Sometimes we would watch a movie or play cribbage on my dad’s prized game board, after washing dinner dishes by hand with my sisters. Here are a few of our ‘ohana’s favorite ways to beat boredom and embrace slow living.

• Leisurely walks around the neighborhood, can include bikes or skateboards with helmets.

• Plan a special dinner night once a week where your keiki picks the meal, helps shop, and preps the food.

• Tackle house projects that have been set aside during busier times. For example, help each keiki sort through their clothes and toys for donation.

• Craft together. This can be so simple, like foraging for rocks and shells and sticks and building little imaginative play spaces.

• Learn a new skill together like fishing, sewing, painting, lei making, and cooking from a member of your own ‘ohana or community.

• Bake cookies for your neighbors and friends and check in on them.

• Technology-free days to embrace quiet time together.

• Outdoor picnics. My keiki love to eat outside in the sunshine and we do picnics frequently in our yard.

Body Boundaries

Dear Cici is a family resource for accurate informaton about sex and relationships. Email your questions to: info@mauifamilymagazine.com.

Aloha Cici,

My son and daughter-in-law have a 2-year-old daughter and they seem very serious about teaching her “consent” and “body boundaries”. Even though the child knows me, the parents insist that I get down on the floor and ask her if she would like me to hug her. This is very confusing, I think, to her as a young child and certainly is offensive and awkward for me as a grandparent. Does it seem appropriate to be teaching this method to a 2-year-old?

-Confused in Ka‘anapali

You are not the first grandparent I have heard this from, so try not to take it personally. Trends in parenting are constantly evolving and today's parents are proactive about teaching body safety and the principle of consent to their young children. Challenging or opposing the parents is not a good idea. The trick is to find ways to incorporate these practices in ways that don’t feel awkward or scripted. It has become more common for adults to offer young children the choice whether or not to give and receive hugs. This idea can be uncomfortable at first if you're not used to it; some cultures have the expectation that kids greet/hug family members as a sign of respect and some older adults may not be accustomed to hearing from children or centering their voices. And while some children love hugs and snuggles, some (including those with sensory processing difficulties) may not be as comfortable with physical affection.

How can you do this without making it weird?

It can be as simple as replacing “Give me a hug” with “Can I have a hug?” If the child wants a hug, great, if not, that’s OK too. Seeking

consent and offering choices teaches children that they have the ability to say no and helps them learn sensitivity and respect for others. Another common situation in which this comes up is when an adult is tickling or wrestling with a child; remember that it’s important to stop when the child asks you to, even if they continue smiling and giggling. In this way, you are modeling how to listen and take “No” for an answer and demonstrating that their words have power.

What is the right age to begin teaching these skills? Some parents begin in infancy, narrating diaper changes and calling parts of the body by their anatomical names. Experts recommend starting these conversations by 3-years-old. With preschoolers you can begin to introduce the concepts of privacy and body safety in everyday situations like taking a bath or changing clothes.

Keeping up with current trends regarding the language we use and the ways in which we interact with others can be confusing, but in the end everyone wants the same thing which is for our children to be healthy, strong and safe.

Change Your Perspective, Show More Empathy

Children have all sorts of opportunities to socialize, meet people, and have experiences that help to shape their opinions of others. Encouraging them to remain mindful of how they perceive themselves and others can impact how they relate and the level of empathy they show.

Perspective

I recently read a book entitled, The War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured World. In the book, social scientist Jamil Zaki argues that our willingness to take and give perspective influences the opinions we form about others. We often think that if we consider “walking a mile in someone else’s shoes” we can gain a good sense of who they are, how they struggle, and what they think. Zaki cautioned that this is no longer of value. He shared research that showed that by drawing conclusions about someone without really sitting with them, we are no better at understanding their perspective than if we didn’t try to understand at all.

Another interesting thing to encourage our children to do is perspective-get. In this way, we actively request another person’s version of their own experience. Simply put, we let others talk. Ask lots and lots of questions and show a genuine curiosity for what others have to share. We’ll all be better off if we do this, and we’ll be more able to empathize in ways that are truly meaningful.

Empathy

Research has shown that the act of empathizing with someone else is about us, and our children, sharing common perspectives based on similar experiences and feelings we’ve had ourselves. It’s about our willingness to grow and understand others because of the experiences we share. Just like the ideas we hold about ourselves—that our views and attitudes change over time—other people’s experiences do too. Empower your children to be open to the fact that other people have a great deal more to offer than they think. Experiences that they seek and the other children they meet stand to give them ideas that can open their minds, expand their hearts, and make the friendships they keep that much more enriching.

RECIPES

Git in Ma Belly Bowls

When days lengthen and temperatures start mounting in our jungle kitchens, less time slaving away at the stove and more time enjoying our island home becomes priority number one. This recipe employs the use of a timeless kitchen tool whose sole purpose was to make cooking fast and efficient: the wok. With generously high sides and a relatively small cooking area, the key to a successful wok experience is having all your ingredients cut, stacked, and ready to go. To top our bowls, we will add a healthful, nutrient-dense sauce to bring it all together.

Grab your favorite veggies, your choice of aromatics, and your grain of choice, already steaming away in your rice cooker. I prefer Jasmine rice or if I need a real hit of healthy protein, a combo of French lentils and quinoa. You can substitute your favorite noodle or even cubed roasted sweet potato for the grain.

Recommended aromatics:

Minced or micro-planed fresh ginger

Minced or micro-planed garlic

Chili flakes (if you like heat)

Green onion/scallion

Oil of choice (a neutral fruit oil, my go-to is avocado oil)

Moving quickly with a heat-proof pair of tongs, grab a pile of your aromatic blend with a little oil with each veggie that passes through the cooking zone of the wok, pull the finished, par-

cooked veg up to the sides, and move onto the next veggie until you’ve done all the vegetables. Please note, the veggies will be still exposed to some heat, so a good glossing in that fragrant oil and a quick sear, carryover cooking will occur and finish them off.

Recommended veggies:

Sugar snap peas

Red bell peppers

A hearty green like kale or chard

Broccolini

Zucchini

Julienned heirloom carrots

Purple daikon/watermelon radish

Variations of color, texture, and cuts make for visual interest. Remember, we eat with our eyes.

Next make your sauce, in your blender mix: Tahini miso sauce

1/4 cup red or white miso

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

3 tbsp Tahini

6 tbsp avocado oil

2 tsp honey

1 micro planed garlic clove

1 tbsp micro-planed ginger root

1 tsp harissa paste (if you like a little kick, if not, omit)

Top finished bowls with some peanuts, crispy fried garlic or shallot for extra crunch, and some fresh herbs like Thai basil or cilantro.
