BY KALIA KELMENSON

One of the fastest ways to switch out of overwhelm and stress is to focus on what you are grateful for. It’s a great tool to teach your kids at a young age, and as with almost everything, they will do what they see you doing. Here’s a simple idea to bring the practice of gratitude into your daily lives in a tangible way. As you go through your day, gather symbols of the gifts of your life. Maybe you are in the forest with your family and you come across a pine cone or a special leaf. Gather one that will remind you of the time you spent there, on that day. At the beach, you may find a piece of driftwood or a shell resting in the sand. The trick is to pay attention to what is around when you remember to invite gratitude in. Gather what will bring that moment alive for you again. It could be something physical, or it may be a color that you see or an expression on your child’s face. Find a representation of that color or that expression. It could be a photo, or even a piece of paper colored in with that particular shade of blue the sky was that day.

of gratitude, make a special place for them in your home. You could make a place for them at the center of your table, where you can see them and remember them at meal times, or you could have a shelf that you pass by daily so you are sparked by the special memories. Around the holidays, gather all of your gratitude reminders together. Get a wire or straw wreath form for the backing and gather some simple evergreen boughs or green ti leaf. You will also want floral wire, (a hot glue gun is great too if you have older children.) Create a base for your wreath by wrapping it with greens and then incorporate your treasures, talking about the times you had while gathering them.

When you gather gratitude for both the grand and the mundane, you remember that in the quietest moments, and even in the midst of chaos, there are still treasures of your As you gather the treasured reminders life to be grateful for. Our Keiki ENDEMIC HAWAI'I ARTISTS

Art Class with Noble Richardson BY ALMA TASSI

The last thing Noble Richardson imagined for his career was teaching art to kids. While on the mainland to get his BFA, he primarily worked in nightclubs doing security. When he returned to Maui, he knew he wanted to give back to his island home. He set his eyes on Wailuku Elementary and asked his nephew’s kindergarten teacher for permission to paint a rusty storage container on the school grounds. He transformed the eyesore into a mural with help from the entire school. When the principal Beverly Stanich invited him to teach, he was caught off guard. He never taught art, but she gave him freedom to create a curriculum. Going from wrangling unruly guests to teaching small children happened organically, a kuleana put in his path. He said, “I took my college curriculum and put it in their language as an Uncle for kids from kindergarten to 5th grade.” The connection of being on campus strengthened his art and purpose. Noble’s art and lessons always include his unique perspective being born and raised in Happy Valley. He says, “We possess a certain fingerprint that we cannot change. We can say something about Hawai'i without knowing why, it just happens.” He encourages his students to feel the value of being

from Hawai'i, even if you’re not specifically “Hawaiian.” “We tend to put the mainland on a pedestal. But we have so much here to embrace.” He started Endemic Hawai'i Artists as a way to share mo'olelo from a local perspective through collaborative permanent murals. His murals can be seen throughout Wailuku Town, Maui Hui Malama, and Restaurant Matsu, as well as numerous private centers such as the Queen Liliuokalani Center and many schools across the entire island. He says, “I see my students walk by these murals and even though you may not know the stories, it may click later in life. It will touch you in different ways as you grow older.” As his own kids grow, he tests his lessons on them before bringing them to the classroom. He says, “My goal when I got into this was to have fun. The biggest thing I learned from day one is the absolute joy they get from art and what they never thought possible. You can really see it in their face. It’s stuck with me.” You can see more of Noble’s work at instagram.com/endemic.hawaii.artists.

Our Keiki LANGUAGE ARTS

Hakalama: The Building Blocks of ‘Olelo Hawai’i BY KAIMANA BRUMMEL

A

s the ’Ōlelo Hawai’i (Hawaiian language) revitalization movement matures into its fourth decade, I am encouraged by its growth in and out of classrooms. While shopping at Pukalani Superette I spotted ’Ōlelo Hawai’i labels on common grocery items. Duolingo, a popular language learning app, now includes ’Ōlelo Hawai’i for learners around the world. And while ’Ōlelo Hawai’i is in more places, you still may be unsure about how to read, write, and pronounce this Polynesian language. The good news is ’Ōlelo Hawai’i has a number of advantages that make it easier to learn and to read than English. The words are generally multisyllabic and constructed from 45 basic syllables that have both long and short versions (ha and hā, for example). This makes it possible to memorize and begin reading syllabically before kindergarten. In comparison, English words are structured using over 15,000 different syllables! The phonotactics of ’Ōlelo Hawai’i and its writing system is also very closely aligned. What you read, write, and say are all the same, all the time. This was one of the reasons Hawai’i experienced such high rates of literacy in the 19th century. It is an easy language to learn. When I began learning Hawaiian in 1987 at age 2, our kumu introduced us to ’Ōlelo Hawai’i through the English alphabet. Through study, observation, and experimentation our kumu and the ’Aha Pūnana Leo, a non-profit that runs Pūnana Leo Hawaiian immersion preschools, developed the Hakalama syllabary for keiki learners. Today, those students begin to master reading Hawaiian approximately 2 years before their peers begin to master reading English.

Learning the Hakalama syllabary begins with the chant ha, ka, la, ma na, pa wa, ’a. Follow the syllabary from top to bottom, left to right (see Hakalama figure) chanting the lines with no kahakō on a single beat and the lines with a kahakō (macron) on a 2 beat. At Pūnana Leo schools students do this while seated in a circle, alongside peers, while watching one student lead them by pointing out huakalama (consonant vowel pairs) on a Hakalama chart. You can do this by following the Hakalama chart with your finger. No matter if you’ve lived in Hawai’i all your life or have recently arrived, you have the opportunity to learn ’Ōlelo Hawai’i through formal education, apps, or self-study. Stay curious and seek learning opportunities that best fit your learning style, time availability, and budget. As the ’ōlelo no’eau goes “I ka ’ōlelo nō ke ola; I ka ’ōlelo nō ka make” ‘In language there is life; In language there is death.’ Kaimana Brummel is the product of a home dedicated to Hawaiian values and community. She strives to fulfill the responsibilities bestowed upon her by her ancestors, family, and community with aloha.

Baby Massage Baby massage can be healing and therapeutic for you and baby alike. It can help them cry less, sleep better, and even lower levels of stress hormones while helping you bond more with your newborn. If you’d like to give it a try, here are a few things to keep in mind. Best practice. Wait until at least 45 minutes after baby eats to help prevent tummy trouble or spitting up. Always take cues from your baby. Your little one will let you know what feels good to them. Watch for positive cues like eye contact, smiles, cooing sounds, and relaxed movements with baby’s arms and legs. Massage oil. If your little one is wearing only a diaper, use an edible, non-toxic, babysafe oil to prevent chafing. Check if baby has an adverse reaction to the oil by testing it on a small patch of their skin first. Set up. Choose a quiet, warm room, especially if baby’s in their birthday suit. Place baby in front of you on a stable, comfortable surface, such as the floor or a bed. When massaging, your touch should be tender. Avoid tickling, which may cause baby some stress. Make long, gentle, slow strokes and try not to press too hard on any one point.

Build your communication. Baby massage is less about muscle manipulation and more about contact in a way that pleases and soothes you both. Feel free to sing softly to your little one. Hearing your voice is another way to help your little one relax and build a stronger bond with you. The right strokes. You could start with baby on their front with their head turned to the side. Using your whole hand, fingers together, caress their back, shoulders, arms, and legs. Then turn baby onto their back and repeat on their chest, stomach, arms, and legs. An aid for a gassy tummy. Massage can help your little one pass gas and feel better. Try massaging in a clockwise direction on baby’s stomach, from their right to left. Start at the top right of their abdomen and stroke across just under the ribs. Next, go down the left side of their tummy, then across and back up to the start. Rub gently in this circular motion to help move along gas and stool in the direction of baby’s intestine. Skin-on-skin touch and massage can be a positive, bonding, and therapeutic experience for you and baby. Spending a few minutes with your loved one this sweet and tender way is nothing short of blissful.—RG

Baby Keiki FULL HOUSE automating bills and organizing playdates for older children as well as putting in place two layers of care for emotional and practical support for both parents. Make sure there are simple instructions already laid out before birth has happened so it will be a seamless transition to hand off duties.

Postpartum with Multiple Keiki BY ALYSHA HIGGINS AND LANATA HOKE OF PACIFIC BIRTH COLLECTIVE The postpartum period, often referred to as the fourth trimester is a huge transition for families. For parents with multiple children, welcoming a new child into the home is full of joy, but can also present challenges. Here are some ways to create support for this tender time. Call in the village. Mothers get in the habit of doing everything themselves, but it’s important to ask for help. Start having conversations with partners, friends, and family about what specific support might look like after the new baby is born: dropping off a meal, taking the older kids to the park for a few hours, or talking on the phone can all be forms of support. Often, the people around us want to help but aren’t sure how.

Add layers of care. Postpartum doulas are a resource for support when there is a newborn as well as older keiki. They act as another set of hands in a busy household and offer specific support for the mother such as bodywork, herbal support, steams, and ceremony. Remember, once you have had a baby, you are considered postpartum, so seek out postpartum support when you need it. Rest, rest, rest. Rest is an essential part of postpartum care, even when older kids are in the house. Preparing for the fourth trimester during the pregnancy should involve talking to siblings about their new role and making them part of helping mom and the new baby. It can allow siblings to feel like an important part of the ohana and ease the transition into the new family structure. And finally, breathe easy mama, you’re doing just fine. Baby Keiki SAFE AND SOUND

Preparing the Home for Baby Making sure your home is prepared for a newborn is a must-do for parents. After nesting for nine months, most parents are eager to spend time getting to know their baby in a comfortable and harmonious environment. Here’s a checklist to do just that, plus a few items you may have overlooked. Finger food. Stock up your fridge, especially if you plan to nurse. Fill with healthy, easy-to-grab foods for you like nuts, veggies, fruit, cheese sticks, and protein bars. Make room for a snack basket in your pantry or your fridge for yourself and your kids so they can help themselves if you’re with the baby and can’t get up right away. Clean floors. You and your baby will be on the floor for tummy time, diaper changes, and playtime on a baby mat. All of these activities will get you up close and personal with your carpet and rugs, so consider giving them a good clean by calling in the professionals. If your wallet allows it, buy a new rug or carpet – you won’t regret it! Black-out-curtains. Dark or black-out curtains might be your new best friend. They can help soothe you and baby and can be a cue for baby

for nap time. What mom doesn’t love to prolong a deep, rejuvenating period of rest, quiet time, or sleep? Safety. Before you know it, your baby will be moving and getting into everything. Make sure anything that isn’t safe for baby is either removed, locked up or out of reach. Remove delicate items off table tops, cover outlets, and use baby gates to limit movement. Kids love to empty containers and cabiwnets, so install locks (including the fridge!) where needed. Baby video monitor. These gadgets may be more pricey than non-video monitors, but they do give parents the added reassurance that their loved one is safe when they’re quiet. They’re also perfect for the middle of the night when the last thing you want to do is leave your own bed. With this monitor, you simply roll over and take a peek at your baby.—RG

Baby Keiki IMMUNITY BOOSTERS

Protect Yourself from COVID-19 BY CHRISSY MILLER, EMPLOYEE HEALTH MANAGER, MAUI HEALTH

 E at a healthy diet and get those natural vitamins from fruits and vegetables.  T ake steps to lose excess weight and set a good example for your children. Even though it seems like we’ve been fighting this pandemic forever, COVID-19 is a new disease. This means that even the healthiest immune system will have no existing antibodies to fight off an infection. Because of this, getting vaccinated is still the most effective way to protect yourself and your ‘ohana and provides the most protection against this dangerous virus. However, a strong immune system can help you avoid regular colds or bacterial infections. Plus, our bodies need to be as strong as possible should we ever contract COVID. Here's how you can support a healthy immune system:  I f you smoke, take steps to quit… today! Keep secondhand smoke far away from your keiki!  S tay physically active, with at least 30 minutes of movement, 5 days a week. Get kids out of the house on the weekends – go for a walk or a nice swim.  M ake sure you’re getting at least 7 hours of sleep per night, on average. Kids could need even more, depending on their age.

 I f you consume alcohol, drink in moderation. Again, remember your kids are watching your daily habits – the good and the not so good.  L earn healthy ways to manage stress, such as mindfulness, meditation, or talking to a friend. Start teaching these skills at a young age to set kids up for success.  P ractice good hygiene at home and at work. This includes washing your hands frequently and keeping surfaces clean.  I n the kitchen, make sure meats are cooked properly, and clean cutting boards and cooking utensils well.  S tay up-to-date on all your regular vaccines, including the flu vaccine. And lastly, whether you are vaccinated or not, the most important thing you can do to protect yourself and help slow the spread of COVID is to follow infection prevention guidance, be diligent in your everyday actions, and teach these practices to your children. Please do your part and support our healthcare and other frontline heroes on Maui!

DON’T WAIT TO

VACCINATE PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR BABY

Ask your provider about the Covid-19 vaccine COVID-19 during pregnancy increases the risk for adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes. The benefits of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine outweight any known potential risks of vaccination. Some facts to consider:* •

• • •

In September 2021, more than 125,000 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported in pregnant women, including more than 22,000 hospitalized cases, and 161 deaths. Only 31% of pregnant women have been vaccinated against COVID-19. 97% of pregnant women hospitalized with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were unvaccinated. In addition to the risks of severe illness and death for pregnant and recently pregnant women, there is an increased risk for adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes, including preterm birth and admission of their neonate(s) to an intensive care unit.

Baby Keiki NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

Clean Up Your Diet Why not ring in the new year with a promise to clean up your diet and eat food that benefits your body and personal wellbeing? If you’re ready to start, read on for tips on achieving a nutritional, balanced diet in just a few easy steps. Cut out hidden sugars. Sugar is often added to processed foods like pasta sauce. There’s no doubt it may add flavor, but it also increases Type 2 diabetes risk. Learn to identify the various sugar forms on labels such as rice syrup, corn syrup, and evaporated cane juice. Reading “total sugars” is an excellent place to start. New rule for the new you - put it back on the shelf and find a sugar-free brand, or better yet, make the sauce yourself. Reduce your red meat intake. According to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, “Red meat tends to be high in saturated fat and cholesterol, which may contribute to heart disease.” If you’re a meat-lover, eliminating red meat from your diet altogether might be too drastic. Consider smaller portions such as two three-ounce size portions of steak per week. Gradually reduce the portion size over time. Give it a whirl—it’s not as hard as you think! More fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are rich in good phytonutrients, such as lycopene in red fruits, like tomatoes. Plant-based foods are lower in calories, making this a great way to clean up your diet and help you to shed a few unwanted pounds. When you sit down to a

meal, think of your plate as a clock and fill half of it with salad or cooked fruits and veggies. Leave a quarter for protein and the rest for whole grains. Less salt. According to The American Heart Association, many Americans consume more than 3,000 milligrams of sodium daily. Salt is made up of 40% sodium and 60% chloride. The recommended amount is no more than 2,300 milligrams of salt each day, and ideally, no more than 1,500. Excess salt pulls water into your blood vessels, increasing pressure. Over time, this strains your heart and can lead to permanent damage. Think twice before you reach for the saltshaker next time. If you suspect you’ve had more than the recommended amount, do your body a favor and give the salt a break. This year, celebrate a new healthy you by saying no to sugars and red meat and yes to fresh fruit and vegetables. You’ll feel good about being a mindful eater, and your energized body will thank you for it.—RG

Kick the Plastic Habit If you ever thought about the amount of household waste your family creates, you may realize it’s time to change some habits. With this in mind, owner Ashley Bowman launched Zero Waste Hale, offering high quality, sustainable lifestyle essentials at local farmer markets and retail pop-ups. Buoyed by the great community response, she decided to go all in and open a retail storefront in the heart of Ha’ikū Town. Toasted Quinoa Stuffing The cornucopia overflowing with abundance is an iconic image when Thanksgiving rolls around. With all the potentially delicious, yet not so healthy things on the table, this recipe would be delicious for vegans and carnivores. This dish boasts not only great flavor, but some solid nutritional density, features some local ingredients and rivals the protein grams of a slice of turkey breast. Feel free to stuff this into a turkey cavern or serve next to Aunt Sally’s cranberry relish.

Ingredients

Instructions

3 cups rinsed and cooked quinoa 1/2 cup diced white onion 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tsp of fresh thyme 1/2 tsp chopped rosemary 1/2 tsp sage 1 cup of roasted chestnuts, diced 1 cup ali’i mushroom, diced 4 tbsp of unsalted butter or vegetable oil 2 tbsp vegetable oil 3/4 cup vegetable broth salt and pepper to taste

1. H eat 2 tbsp of butter or oil over medium high heat. Add diced onions, garlic and mushrooms, and allow time to reduce and brown, but be careful to not burn the garlic. Salt and pepper to taste. Remove mixture from saute pan. 2. I n the same pan, add the remaining 2 tbsp of butter and 2 tbsp oil, add herbs and let flavors extract into the warm butter or oil. Add chestnuts and quinoa to the mixture. 3. O ver medium high heat, blend ingredients, adding 1/4 of a cup of the broth at a time, each time letting the quinoa sit on the bottom of the pan for a moment to achieve a bit of a crispy crust. A carbon steel skillet is just the thing for this, or a nice seasoned Le Creuset.

‘Ohana AROUND THE WORLD

Good Luck for the New Year

C

elebrating the New Year to attract good luck and prosperity is a cornerstone of many cultures. Each has its own unique traditions passed down through generations and enjoyed by the whole family and community at large. Hawaiian prayers. Hawaiians honor Lono, the god of fertility, and the start of the four-month Makahiki season. As Lono passed over each district, villagers would stop work, make offerings to their chief and celebrate. It was a time of joy and prayer for the prosperity of the land, abundance of harvest, and good health for the family. While the Hawaiian new year is now a multicultural celebration, you will see families taking time off work to enjoy each other’s company and the season. Celebrating circles in the Philippines. In the Philippines, eating circular fruit like peaches, apples or pears, is believed to attract abundance and wealth. Almost anything associated with round shapes is considered good luck, such as wearing polka-dotted clothing and throwing coins at the stroke of midnight.

Ring of luck in Mexico. In Mexico, New Year’s Eve is celebrated at midnight with a drink of champagne with a twist inherited from the Spanish. Mexicans like to add a gold ring to the bottom glass before toasting ‘¡salud!’ to attract prosperity. If you don’t have a ring, any small gold object, like a gold chain, pendant, or cameo brooch, carries the same luck. Fish for fortune in China. In Chinese culture, eating a whole fish together with family is believed to bring wealth in the new year. There are also traditional rules associated with the way you eat New Year’s fish. For example, the head of the fish must point toward the elders, and the person facing the fish’s head must eat first! Blacken the eye of a doll in Japan. In Japan, a daruma is a good luck charm that helps you reach your goals. The doll must have blank eyes. When a wish is made, you can fill in the left eye. You can fill in the right eye after the wish is granted or one year has safely passed. At the end of the year, the spent doll can be returned to a temple and burned to symbolize moving forward from the past year’s struggles. Our world is rich and diverse with customs that define each and every place. Whether it’s praying, enjoying a meal or drink, or buying a charm, welcome a healthy, happy, and abundant chapter into your life this New Year.—RG

‘Ohana MONEY MATTERS

Planning for College Savings One of the best ways to increase the affordability of your child’s education is to take advantage of federal tax breaks aimed at families saving and paying for college. Here are a couple of common ways to save for your kids’ college education: Education Savings Account (ESA) An education savings account helps you pay for education expenses from kindergarten through college. Account earnings can grow tax-deferred, and withdrawals are tax-free when used for eligible expenses. ESAs allow you to invest up to $2,000 (after tax) per year, per child. Benefits of an ESA include a likely much higher rate of return than you’d get in a regular savings account and when you withdraw the money to pay for education expenses you won’t have to pay taxes. An ESA has flexibility and can be used for K-12 tuition, a vocational school or school supplies. Plus, if your child doesn’t end up needing it, you can transfer the money to a sibling for their education. 529 Plan If you can afford to save more than $2,000 a year for your child’s college education or if you don’t meet the income limits for an ESA, then a 529 Plan could be a better savings option with no annual contribution limits, other than gift tax considerations. Like an ESA, 529 Plan earnings are tax-deferred, distributions are tax-free if used to pay for qualified expenses and savings can

Be sure to choose a plan that best fits your family’s unique situation as not all 529 Plans are the same. Things to consider include: Research your state’s 529 plans and tax benefits to help you decide whether an in-state plan is your best bet, or if you should expand your search nationwide. Determine how you will use the 529 account so you can choose features that match your needs. Find investment profiles that match your goals by comparing them to your own risk tolerance and growth targets to choose a smart fit. Compare the performance of 529 accounts to find ones that result in higher returns and have a solid track record of delivering consistent growth. Watch out for fees and make sure the costs won’t pull too much from your earnings. If there are other siblings, you may want the option to move the funds from one family member to another. Whether your child is a teenager or toddler, it’s never too early to start thinking about savings for their college education.

‘Ohana ARBOR DAY

'Ōhi‘a lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) | Image by Forest and Kim Starr

A Tradition of Planting Native Hawaiian Trees BY TAMARA SHERRILL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF MAUI NUI BOTANICAL GARDENS This season has been one of tragedy and divisiveness as COVID-19 sweeps through our small community, the vaccinated and unvaccinated become more dissociated, and locals and visitors face off. Observing the American holiday, Arbor Day, may seem like a frivolous act this year. But other species are also facing challenges, and individual actions can have long lived consequences. A recently published global assessment of tree species concluded that about one third of trees on Earth and one quarter of trees in the U.S. are threatened with extinction. How does Hawai‘i compare? Of the 183 native Hawaiian tree species evaluated for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red List so far, more than 70% are endangered or critically endangered. Even if the remaining 76 unmeasured native Hawaiian trees are doing fine, which is optimistic, more than half of all native Hawaiian tree species are in immediate danger of disappearing. This

means that planting and stewarding a native tree makes more of a difference here than many other places in the world. Arbor Day in Hawai‘i is the first Friday of each November, instead of being observed in spring like most of the U.S. continent. In 1905 the Territory of Hawai‘i was the first to choose their own local rainy season to celebrate Arbor Day, and challenged schools across the state to plant trees on school grounds. This year, Hawaiian Arbor Day celebrations will be held the week of November 2-6, with Maui’s Arbor Day Garden Expo being celebrated at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens with online tree care and selection classes, offerings from local nurseries, and a native tree giveaway one per resident, regardless of age. To learn which native species will thrive in your area and reserve your trees for safe and distanced pickup, visit arbordayexpo.com. The action of planting and nurturing a native Hawaiian tree is small but consequential, the anticipation of a better future none of us are guaranteed to see. Don’t overlook the chance to observe hopeful traditions this year. You can see these trees and more at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, open Tuesday through Saturday. Join the Maui Nui Botanical Garden in celebrating Arbor Day from November 2-6, 2021. Follow @mauinuibg to learn more.

‘Ohana MODELING INCLUSIVITY

Gender and Stereotypes Dear Cici is a family resource for accurate informaton about sex and relationships. Email your questions to info@mauifamilymagazine.com. Dear Cici, We have a neighbor who dresses like a “tomboy”. The other day my daughter asked if the neighbor is “trans” and then asked me what “trans” means. I was surprised she even knew the word and I’m unsure how to talk with her about it...Help! Signed, Questioning in Wailuku

Wow, this is a complicated question with an even more complicated answer. Conversations about and depictions of the LGBTQ+ community have become more common in the media and social discourse. Kids are exposed to increasingly complex definitions of gender and identity than previous generations and it can be hard to keep up with all the information and representations that exist within the rainbow alphabet. As with anything, let your child’s questions guide the conversation. The information you provide will depend on their age. A younger child’s curiosity is often satisfied with a small amount of information. Whereas older kids may want more detailed or specific answers. Remember, this will not be a one-time discussion, it will be an ongoing conversation. Regarding her question, begin by talking with your child about the difference between sex, gender and sexual orientation. If you’re unsure, do a bit of research ahead of time to make yourself familiar with the terms and the differences between them. Explore with your child ideas about gender and stereotypes. Traditionally, gender has been thought of as “binary” (boy/girl) but that is changing with a wider recognition of

“non-binary” individuals (those whose gender is somewhere outside male/female) including those who identify as “transgender”. Ask your child their opinion about what makes a girl a girl or a boy a boy and why? Look for examples within your family, community or in the media that challenge these stereotypes. Explain that it’s natural to try to categorize people/things/situations; that’s our brains’ way of sorting things and making sense of the world. In the case of gender identity however, you cannot make assumptions based on appearance. Sometimes it can be confusing to know how to refer to someone and many of us fear getting it wrong. If you’re not sure, ask them. If you mess up, offer a brief apology and remember for next time. Don’t underestimate your influence as your child’s primary role model. If you make jokes or use terms that are disrespectful or offensive, they probably will too. If you model openness and inclusion when you talk about issues of gender and sexuality, your child is more likely to be comfortable with and inclusive of the diversity within the LGBTQ+ community. Also, if you show your child that you can address these issues in a thoughtful and compassionate way, you’re letting them know that it’s safe to talk to you about sensitive topics in the future. Good Luck! Cecilia Ortiz, LCSW is a clinical social worker and a mom. She has nearly 20 years of experience including working with kids, teens and adults in the areas of sex education, abuse, trama and prevention.

'Ohana Activities of excitement and say, “Ho‘ema‘ema‘e (time to clean)!” Take your washcloth and playfully wipe parts of your face. Encourage your infant to grasp the other washcloth and imitate you. They may not wipe with the same finesse as you, but enjoy the moment of playful connection with your infant. Ho‘ema‘ema‘e— all clean! Toddlers: 12–24 months Showing affection with toddlers is aloha! Create a “Honi (kiss) Me Obstacle Course” where your toddler can crawl through a large box, climb over a cushion, bounce on a pile of blankets, roll across a blanket, and then end with a playful honi from you! They not only get the win of aloha and honi from you, but also build strength, balance, and coordination.

P

Preschoolers: 24–48 months

Spending just 10 minutes a day fully present in play with your keiki develops a long-lasting bond and helps with overall development. This is why Tūtū and Me Traveling Preschool uses play to reinforce its featured Hawaiian values. Here are three playful activities that teach the value of aloha.

Check in with your values regularly as you play, teach and guide your keiki! Find more at pidf.org/ ohana-activities.

arenting can be tricky. When overloaded with information on how to raise smart and successful keiki, modern day parents can easily feel uncertain about their choices. Take a moment and tune in to your core values. Your personal core values constantly guide the way you teach and correct your keiki, like reminding them to mahalo someone after they are given a gift, clean up their toys when they are done playing, or share with a friend. Your value system is the inner compass of your 'ohana, navigating every parenting choice you make.

Infants: Birth–12 months Keeping infants clean is aloha! After meal time, get two damp washcloths and give one to your infant. Make an animated expression

Enjoying healthy food with preschoolers is aloha! Give your keiki the role of head chef and design simple chef hats out of paper for the both of you. Visit a local farmer’s market and have your chef keiki help choose produce that are ready to bring home to eat. Help your chef keiki peel, slice, or chop the fruits or vegetables. Arrange them on a plate in a creative way. Be mindful of safety as you teach your keiki how to handle any sharp utensils. Maika’i (congrats)! Your chef keiki just made a farm-to-table connection in a playful way.

Ditches are for irrigation, not recreation. Talk to your kids about staying safe
