Organize Your Family Photos “The best things in life are the people we love, the places we’ve been and the memories we’ve made along the way” Anonymous How many of us live with that nagging thought in the back of our minds: What if I lose all of my photos? I need to organize and save them now! I don’t have time to deal with my photos, there are just too many! Yeah, I have had a few of those thoughts myself. But lo and behold, here is a way out of that photo mess, so take notes and keep those precious memories preserved. 1. Gather all of your photos in one spot, whether they are printed or digital. 2. Decide on a theme for your albums. Perhaps one for each year? Each decade? A seasonal album? Special events? Choosing themes allows you to categorize your photos, making it easier to organize them. 3. Choose what to keep, what to store and what to toss. Your “A” photos are your favorites, the ones that need to end up in an album, digital or otherwise. Your “B” photos are the ones you like, but you can store separately. Your “C” photos will go in the can…the trash can! 4. Safe storage. Once your photos are categorized and organized, keep those that are printed in an archival safe photo box. For those that are digital, upload them to your exterior hard drive or an online storage service. 5. Scan it. Once you get to this point, for those photos that are already printed you can have a scanning party! Invite another friend over and take the time to scan your photos together. You can easily create photobooks online, share via social media and have one more spot for safe storage by scanning your photos. Saving your memories does not have to claim that nagging space in your mind. Free your mind by blocking time each day or each week, breaking down this process into manageable steps. You will not regret it! JP

Our Keiki PARENTING

SLEEPOVER SURVIVAL GUIDE With the excitement and expectation of extraordinary good fun, here are some tips to to heip you keep control.

Ahh, the sweet tradition of the “sleepover” brings joy to the heart of your child, and possibly a bit of fear to yours! I remember my own late nights with friends, watching movies, creating dance routines, filming pretend commercials (yeah, on an old school big video camera, too!) and eating junk food until the midnight hour. Fun for me as a kid, tiring for my parents to say the least. If you are ready to enter the phase of hosting sleepovers for your child, then banish a few of your fears by following these guidelines. Your Sleepover Survival Guide: 1. Host a small group of children. No more than six keiki at a time will help lessen the possibility of breakdowns and crying. Also, be sure to invite friends that get along well to keep the drama to a minimum. Late nights away from home can be hard on children, so by keeping the group small you can allow for more fun and less tears all around. 2. Start the party later, say around 6pm. You can have a fun dinner ready when the children arrive, then by the time they have finished their meal, you can then have an activity ready for them to enjoy.

Enrollment for Summer & Fall 2015 opens March 30th, 2015! Ages 3-5. 3. Plan an activity. Whether it’s making friendship bracelets, baking cookies, playing board games or designing fun t-shirts, get the kids having a good time together with a focused activity. 4. Put on a movie. As the evening goes on you can get the kids settled down by putting on a fun movie. It will help calm the environment and give them a chance to chill out together. They may even fall asleep! 5. Make breakfast. Plan a fun breakfast for the kids, like build-your-own breakfast burrito, pancakes or donuts (it’s a party, right?). 6. Schedule a pick-up time for the morning. As the day progresses, the children will get more cranky. Having their parents pick up the keiki by no later than 10am will allow everyone to get a bit of rest. Break out the sleeping bags, treats and coffee (for you, not the kids) and get ready for a fun night for all! JP

How to Support Positive Sibling Relationships By KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.

doing/heard you/understands your idea?” Prepare each of them that their sibling may not like their idea, i.e. “Why don’t you tell your brother your idea, I’m not sure if he will want to do it or not…”

S

ibling strife…well, it’s perfectly normal. You will notice that your kids’ relationships will ebb and flow from togetherness to staunch opposition across time and developmental levels. Nonetheless, there are some basic principles to support healthy sibling relationships: Siblings fight! Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean they won’t grow up to be close. Understand that changes in ‘getting along’ will occur in the context of each sibling’s age, seeking his own individuality as well as learning to cope.

Support Individuality. Each child will have her own interests and strengths; Support individuality and diversity of interests and avoid comparing, i.e. “Your sister has neater handwriting than you” or “why can’t you be more cooperative, like your brother?” Set Up Opportunities To Have Your Kids Work As a “Team”. You can start by creating games where the kids are “Team ___,” i.e. doing a collage together, creating art together or even doing chores together. Support Sibling Communication. It is helpful to strengthen non-verbal cues. Often siblings will talk to one another without looking or seeing if their sibling is really on the same page. Specifically, parents can facilitate by slowing down, making statements like “I wonder if your sister noticed what your were

Emotions Games! I particularly like “Emotions Bingo.” Families can play as a team with the large poster of faces to see when they can get 5 in a row. Each time a person gets an emotion card, each family member talks about a time they felt that emotion. This builds emotional vocabulary and gives practice talking about an array of emotional experiences. Teach Specific Strategies For Problem Solving. It is particularly helpful to model that it is perfectly ok when siblings “have different ideas.” Facilitate a variety of strategies to manage it… combine ideas, take turns, try to think about what your brother likes and come up with a new solution, try to persuade your sister, pick something else and come back later. When siblings have better ways of communicating and coping with differences, they become more tolerant and more communicative around different ideas. The best thing we can do is support our children in building healthy sibling relationships is to express a wide array of their emotions with each other, problem solve together and model these strategies in our everyday interactions with them. Our Keiki GROWING UP

How to Handle a Climbing-Crazy Toddler “You are the best adventure” - Unknown Parenting a toddler comes with many rewards: little chats, shared activities and lots of opportunities for adventure! If your little one is a bit more on the daredevil side, you will want to take a moment and read these tips on how to handle a climbing-crazy toddler. As a Maui Mama with a son who has the nickname, “Monkey,” I might just know a couple of things about this topic. We all know that learning how to climb is an important part of the development process. As a parent you want to keep your toddler safe, while still being able to explore the world around. First of all, do your part: secure all heavy furniture to the wall. Bookcases and dressers are easy targets for a toddler to explore, however, they can lead to injury or even death if they fall on your child! By using an L-shaped bracket from the local hardware store, you can ease your worries and protect your child, just in case he gets the itch to climb your furniture. Secondly, do your part: train your child on the boundaries of safe and unsafe areas to climb and unsafe areas. For example, a playground staircase built for toddlers, okay; mommy’s bookcase, not okay. Gently remind your toddler with a firm, yet simple, “no” and remove him from the unsafe area.

Thirdly, do your part: create opportunities to climb safely. Head outdoors and let your toddler explore the yard (with adult supervision, of course), explore the beach, explore the playground…the opportunities are endless and your growing toddler needs these opportunities to exercise his climbing skills! You can even create indoor climbing courses using pillows and other safe household items for fun in your own home. Finally, do your part: use safety gates, nets, etc., wherever it is necessary. And always, always keep your mama eyes open, you know, the ones behind your back, too? Raising an active toddler is no easy task, but the reward is worth it! Happy parenting! JP

Our Keiki FAMILY

RAISE A GRATEFUL CHILD “Gratitude for the seemingly insignificant – a seed – this plants the giant miracle.” Ann Voskamp

R

aising a child who walks in thankfulness can be a challenge in today’s “give me more, give it now” attitude. However, as we walk in gratefulness for even the “insignificant” things in life, our children will learn to emulate us. Beyond simply copying us as parents, our goal should be for our children to truly develop a heart of gratitude. Of course, it’s a matter of them choosing thankfulness, but we can teach them what it means to be thankful. One way to raise a grateful child is by sharing one thing each day with each other that you are thankful for in your lives. This can take place around the dinner table, on the drive home from school or before bedtime. Another way to raise a grateful child is by seeing beyond difficult circumstances. Regardless of what’s happening in life, we can always choose our

attitudes. As we choose Joy, despite difficulty, our children see that and learn how to deal with tough situations with gratefulness. Keep a family “Thanksgiving” journal…each night family members can take turns writing one thing to be thankful for in the journal. What fun it will be to look back over all of the many thanksgivings over the years! Keeping a journal will also teach them to write down their thoughts and that even the small things in life matter. Volunteer in the community as a family. As your children learn how to serve others, they will hopefully become more aware of others’ needs. Looking beyond ourselves to helping others is a wonderful way to develop gratefulness. Write thank-you notes. The practice of sending thank-you notes is beginning to be a lost art. Train your children to write thank-you notes, and it will stay with them through the years. Everyone loves to receive a note in the mail. Writing thank-you notes gives children the opportunity to stop and reflect on the good thing that was given or done for them. We can all use a little more of that type of reflection in our lives! What’s one thing you are grateful for today? It could be the seed that brings the miracle. JP

Parenting Styles and Attitudes By Emmanuelle Betham Two main parenting styles are prevalent with families. First, the lenient and stressed out parent who avoids discipline and does not seem to cope. Second, the reliable and relaxed parent who sets clear boundaries and sticks to them, calmly and consistently. It is interesting to note that although in both cases parent styles seem to be in opposition with parent attitude, they are not. How does that work? Well, each attitude is in fact the direct effect of the parent style. Indeed, it appears that stress is the by-product of too much lenience, and peace the by-product of clarity and reliability. And the question is obvious: which would you rather be? No one wants to be a stressed-out parent, but are they doing the right things? Being relaxed does not mean acting relaxed….

Everyone would rather be the relaxed parent but that’s not directly in our hands. If we want to have a relaxed attitude and be that parent, we need to do the right things always, without exception. That’s what being reliable means. Being relaxed comes from being reliable and that means ALWAYS acting conspicuously, clearly, vigilantly, dependably, calmly and consistently. When you do that, then you are that parent. And the more you do it, the more you are that parent. And if you notice yourself slip, do not give yourself a hard time about it; just correct yourself immediately, as you would expect your child to do for him/herself. Also, the more you expect (from yourself or your child) the more you get. So enjoy expecting if you can appreciate the results you get, without giving yourself or your child a hard time. Although it requires focus and consciousness, it’s not hard work being relaxed!

aui mother karin frost gets a lot of pleasure from knowing that the ergobaby carrier she designed to carry her own son back in 2002 caught the attention of other parents around the world and became an award-winning best seller. fast-forward to today: karin’s son is a happy 13-year-old living with his mom and extended ‘ohana in Makawao; karin has sold a majority stake in her business; and sales from ergo’s line of carriers and other products are booming. still, karin is who she always has been. “success hasn’t changed me; i work on staying balanced.” one of the ways she does this is by giving back to the island community where both her son and her business were born. “i feel deep gratitude for the incredible gift that’s been bestowed on me,” said frost. karin knew she wanted to make philanthropy a family affair and turned to the Hawai‘i Community foundation (HCf) for help. “the beauty of working

with HCf is that they bring families like ours together to figure out what their areas of interest are and how to make the most impact with our gifts.” through a donor-advised fund and private family foundation (for which HCf provides grantmaking services), the frosts decided to support the community in two areas: early childhood development/ family support and the environment. With her parents, brother and son, karin has witnessed the difference that giving can make. they’ve had the chance to meet with dads who have gotten closer to their children, thanks to a program the frosts are passionate about called fatherhood involvement team (fit) on Maui, Moloka‘i and Lāna‘i. the family also visited two environmental projects they support on Moloka‘i. karin recognizes that improving people’s situations—whether through a product or philanthropy—offers rewards that go in both directions: “When you know you’ve touched other people’s lives, an energetic exchange happens. Both lives are enhanced. there are many grateful people on and beyond Maui who can attest to that. to learn more about how the Hawai‘i Community foundation can help you with your giving: www. hawaiicommunityfoundation.org to learn more about the father involvement team at Maui family support services: www.mfss.org

GET OUT OF THE “NO!” RUT

“CREATING THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW”

Replace the negative with a positive and see the difference in you and your child. Do you ever feel like your parenting vocabulary has shrunk to a single word? “no” is a powerful word, but when used too often, it becomes background noise for your children and loses its impact. also, saying “no” too often may make you feel more negative than you are. if you are in the “no!” rut, try these tips. start by being mindful of when and why you say “no,” and of your children’s reactions when you say “no.” “When, then” Phrasing: if you child asks if he can play outside but his homework isn’t done, answer with “yes, when your homework is done, then you may go play.” Be funny: kids love silliness so humor is often an effective strategy. if your daughter asks for candy for breakfast, you could say with a silly smile, “absolutely! When pigs fly, everyone will have candy for breakfast!” tickling or chasing can increase the laughter (and distraction factor!). State What Should Happen instead of What Shouldn’t: Describing the desired behavior gives your child a positive substitute for the offending behavior. say “use your inside voice,” instead of

LITTLE DRAGON

SPECIAL $65 1 month+free uniform

“stop yelling;”“We walk when we are in stores,” instead of “no running;” and “Hitting hurts. use words instead of your hands,” instead of “no hitting.” Set up for Success: if your child is climbing the walls and jumping on furniture, instead of spending your day telling her to stop, change the setting if at all possible. Go to a playground or a park where she can run and jump. Before shopping with your child, explain the plan. if you are going to a toy store to buy a gift, let him know that you are only buying a birthday gift, not anything for your child. if you are going to the grocery store, explain that you are shopping for dinner and not for candy or snacks. Try to Say yes as often as Possible: Look for opportunities to say “yes.” as Dr. sears says, “the fewer ‘no’s,’ the better your day goes.” kW

Child-centered educational program children learn through discovery & play

Steps: • Begin reading to child at birth. Do not stop until absolutely forced to do so by child. Even after that, whenever possible, read aloud from books, newspapers, letters, magazines, emails. • Read to child every day. Repeat. • Make books as accessible to child as toys, games, and other amusements; books and reading should be presented on equal footing with other activities. • Visit public library weekly. Repeat. • At library, let child pick out his or her own books. Do not interfere. Enlist librarian to help direct child to age-appropriate books that appeal to child’s interests. (If child is drawn to books with adult themes, interference may be warranted, but generally, if a book is beyond a child’s emotional or intellectual capacity, child will soon get bored with book). • Let child see you read (preferably hard copy books so child knows you are reading and not playing games on your device). • Point out printed words everywhere you see them. Read signs and labels aloud to child. • Talk to child about books. While reading to younger children, ask “What do you think will happen next?” or “What do you think is going on in this picture?” For older children, ask which character the child would most like to be or what the main conflict is. For all children, ask what drew them to that book. • After 18+ years: Release one well-rounded, well-read, independent thinker into the world. KW

five health benefits of putting your kids to bed early

n for Your Child”

Putting children to bed can be a nighmare, but adequate sleep will benefit them in all parts of life. Pediatricians know that for children, sleep is as important to healthy development as food, shelter, safety, and nurturing. In children, the effects of “sleep deprivation” are seen when sleep time is reduced by as little as 30 minutes from what a child needs.

Individual children’s sleep needs vary. Parents who ensure their children get enough sleep see many health benefits. Proper Growth. A key benefit of sleep for children is the release of human growth hormone (HGH), which stimulates normal growth and development, especially bone growth. HGH is primarily released during sleep. Smarter Children. Adequate sleep = better cognitive functioning. Children who get enough sleep learn more easily, demonstrate better problem-solving skills, can pay attention longer, and make better decisions. One study found that “A” students slept an average of 30 minutes longer each night than “D” students.

Happier Children. Well-rested children can better regulate their emotions, leading to improved relationships and mental health. A child’s inability to regulate emotions means more tantrums and more conflicts with peers, siblings and adults. Over-tired children are cranky, have less tolerance for change and disappointment, and are more impulsive and restless. For most children, sleep deprivation looks a lot like ADHD because as the child fights to stay awake, adrenalin is released, making the child wired, irritable, and unable to fall asleep. A child in this state may seem like she doesn’t need sleep, but she actually needs more. Reduced Risk of Lifelong Diseases. Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to higher risks of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, depression, and obesity. Dr. Paul Suratt, a pulmonologist and sleep expert, started studying sleep because of the effects he saw in his heart patients. He suspects that sleep deprivation causes irreversible damage. Stronger Immune System. Immune system functioning is directly connected to sleep. Children who get enough sleep are better able to resist illness and fight off infections when they do get sick. KW

Baby Keiki News • Trends • Tips PREGNANCY EATING: WHAT’S SAFE, WHAT’S NOT So, you have a bun in the oven, with cravings galore, and you want to know what’s safe and what’s not when it comes to eating. While you will need to check with your caregiver during pregnancy, here are some general guidelines for choosing healthy foods for your baby and your body during this critical time of development. • Avoid soft cheeses made from unpasteurized milk. Instead, eat hard cheeses such as cheddar and Swiss cheese, while still checking the label to ensure that they are pasteurized cheeses. • Avoid raw cookie dough and raw cake batter. Instead, bake the cookies and the cake batter to help protect against salmonella. • Avoid fish high in mercury, such as shark, tilefish, king mackerel and swordfish. Instead, enjoy up to twelve ounces of shrimp, salmon or catfish per week. Also, limit albacore tuna to six ounces per week. • When possible, try to eat organic fruits and veggies. Also, avoid highly processed foods for greater health for yourself and for your growing baby.

Questions To Ask When You’re Expecting The excitement of expecting a baby also comes with a lot of questions as you prepare to bring a new little one into the world. When you meet with your caregiver for the first time, you will want to be sure and ask some important questions to ensure you are both on the same page when it comes to prenatal care, delivery and postpartum care. Whether you choose to use a midwife or a medical doctor, your questions may need to be adapted. • Ask your caregiver what they recommend for safe exercises and activities during pregnancy. • Ask your caregiver his or her philosophy on natural vs. medicated delivery, and his or her C-section rate level. Your caregiver’s particular attitude toward the

• Avoid or limit coffee intake, as well as tea. Even herbal teas need to be researched, as certain ones are not safe for consumption while pregnant and others aid in your pregnancy. It is important to know which ones are approved for consumption while pregnant. • Several superfoods to add to your grocery list while pregnant include frozen wild blueberries, Swiss chard, kidney beans, sesame seeds and plain whole milk yogurt. Once again, as with anything, when in doubt do the research and ask your pregnancy caregiver for safety guidelines. JP

chosen delivery method is key in making sure you are prepared for the birth that you hope to have with your baby. • Ask your caregiver how they feel about doulas (if you’re considering using one). • Ask your caregiver how far he or she will let you go before inducing, as well as his or her induction rate. • Ask your caregiver his or her philosophy on home birth and hospital birth, when applicable. • Ask your caregiver if he or she does episiotomies, and if so, when and why. • Finally, ask what kind of postpartum care is offered for after the delivery. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, this is your child and he or she deserves the very best care possible! JP

The Importance of Infant Bonding By Lisa Kimura

Once baby arrives, babywearing and skin-toskin contact not only promotes successful breastfeeding, it also helps build baby’s sense of safety and security, as does baby massage, and talking to your baby. Invest in a comfortable, quality baby carrier, and settle in together. Forget the myths: it’s impossible to spoil an infant, so never hesitate to comfort and respond to their needs. Research shows that infants begin recognizing their parents’ facial expressions by three or four months of age. Receiving a big grin from your adoring baby is the most rewarding response to all your effort, and is merely the beginning of a lifelong bond.

F

rom the moment you receive a positive pregnancy test, it begins. The worries about your baby; the wonder about their future; and the questions about what kind of parent you will be.

Remember, there are also services and resources such as Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies’ MothersCare Line. This confidential phone line can answer questions, provide support, or point you in the direction of local services. Call: (808) 951-6660 or toll-free: (888) 951-6661 for assistance, or visit www.hmhb-hawaii.org.

All of this is very normal, and even the most seasoned parents experience a barrage of emotions and questions with each pregnancy. These feelings also help begin the natural process of bonding with the new life growing inside you. While each parent experiences pregnancy uniquely, it’s important to begin the bonding process, long before holding your new baby in your arms. The brain is wired to seek safety, and it’s important to establish your baby’s sense of security. That begins with feeling confident and secure in your own environment. Although pregnancy and new parenthood can feel very overwhelming at times–hormones, sleep deprivation, emotional and financial stress can each take a toll–remember that you’re never alone. Find a trusted friend who can offer a listening ear – more people have experienced the same feelings than you might think. Ask for help around the house or for a break to recharge yourself with a nap. Make an effort to meet up with friends or set a “playdate.” Rest and social interaction help provide the energy you need to care for baby, and helps you bond naturally.

GLUTEN FREE Crêpes Now Available

Gluten Free Diet: Is it Right for You? Many say that ditching pasta and bread has changed their lives. Could it help your family? the gluten-free diet is becoming increasingly popular. started for those with celiac disease, some are finding it helps them if they have wheat intolerance, or just to be healthier in general and lose weight. so what is a gluten-free diet? simply put, gluten-free (aka Gf) means you cut out things that contain wheat, barley, rye or derivatives of these grains, because they contain the gluten protein. to get started on a gluten-free diet, start by going with a fresh and simple diet. fresh fruits and vegetables don’t contain gluten, nor do fresh meat, poultry and fish. Be wary of processed foods and get in the habit of checking labels. Gluten can be in products that you may not even think of, such as non-food products like Chap stick or lipstick and even sunscreen. When it comes to drinks, beer can have gluten in it however most wines do not. Hooray for wine!

thankfully these days many products are coming out with gluten-free alternatives. from soy sauce (yup, it has gluten in it!) to chips and bread, you can find gluten-free products. Most are well marked, either near the ingredients or on the front of the package. it may take a little more detective work, but once you start to find your go-to products, eating gluten-free can be simple. When eating out, be sure to ask your server for their gluten-free selections. some restaurants may even have an entire gluten-free menu or mark their gluten-free options with a “Gf” to make the gluten-free lifestyle easier to manage. for a ton of gluten-free recipes, lists of glutenfree products and other Gf tips, check out www. glutenfreemom.com. sB

W

hile you may not have “Bieber fever,” you cannot deny the truth of this lyric that he wrote because the grass is greener where you actually water it! With the busyness of daily life it is easy to lose sight of the one you love. However, the reality is that maintaining and strengthening your relationship with your sweetheart is one of the key factors for life satisfaction as a whole. By taking the time to “water the grass” of your relationship with your spouse, you are investing in the health of your marriage now and for your future. connect: • Plan a meal for just the two of you. feed the kids early and get them to bed so you can spend some one-on-one time with your sweetie, sharing a meal and sharing conversation. Maybe even light a candle or two to create an atmosphere of romance? the sky’s the limit, folks, plan that romantic meal stat!

• Create a “reconnect jar.” Write down quick, fun activities you can do, put the cards in a jar, then pull one out whenever the mood strikes. from turning up the music and dancing to “your” song together to doing a stare contest, the reconnect jar can shake up a stale afternoon, and provide a few laughs along the way. • Send fun text messages to each other. you can send something as simple as a message like, “i love you, honey, can’t wait to see you!!!” to “i like you a lot. a whole, whole lot!” to inside jokes, sweet encouragements and other loveydovey messages. What a welcome they will be compared to the normal, “Hey, will you pick up some milk?” JP

COMING SOON!

Teaching Family Values “integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” C.S. Lewis as it is with most things in life, more is caught than taught. so teaching family values is something ingrained in a child from early on in life, whether it is a holiday tradition, life philosophy or type of behavior. aside from simply living out your family values, here are a few tools you can purpose to use in teaching your children important values. • Discuss the “what” and the “why” behind your values at age-appropriate levels. Helping your child make the connection as to why you participate in certain activities (or not) helps them understand the importance of their choices and the impending consequences, whether good or bad. • Recognize that no one is perfect. If you made mistakes while growing up that you would like your children to avoid, it is a good idea to share with them, again at an age-appropriate level, why certain choices weren’t the best for your life. While we can learn from our mistakes, any heartache you can help your child avoid is beneficial. • Share with your child the benefits of holding strong values. Whether it be telling the truth,

keeping commitments or respecting others, there are all good rewards for living a life of honor. • Keep your most treasured family values written down and displayed in your home. you can create (or purchase) a printable to frame, a hand-painted sign or simple handwritten note. seeing your family values day-in and day-out will create an imprint on your child’s memory, as well as your own. family values are more than just words, they are a way of life and the legacy that you hope to leave for generations to come. each day that we live matters, so by focusing on the things we truly hold valuable in our lives leads to a healthy, thriving family. our children can then pass on their family values to their children, and the cycle of life continues, with a rich, meaningful inheritance of honor. What are your family values? if you are not sure, then look at how you spend your time, money and energy. then see if those things align with the legacy you want to leave. if not, no worries because today is a great day to start fresh! Lifeguard Towers • South Side: Kamaole 1, 2, 3 Beach Parks • West Side: Hanakao’o Beach (a.k.a. Canoe Beach), DT Flemming Beach Park • North Shore: Kanaha Beach Park, HA Baldwin Beach Park, and Ho’okipa Beach Park • East Side: Hana Bay (fall months only) Safety Tips • If you are unable to swim out of a strong current, signal for help • Rely on your swimming ability rather than a flotation device • Look for, read, and obey all beach and safety signs • If in doubt, don’t go out!

As part of the island-wide 9-1-1 Emergency System, all OSO are trained above and beyond USLA certifications and all are certified AHA First Responders. Each OSO is skilled in rescue techniques using equipment such as rescue boards, tubes and fins, jet skis, four-wheel drive ATV’s, and first aid supplies.

It’s a huge part of what we build at Valley Isle Gymnastics. When VIG athlete Kayden Uweko’olani-DeCoite joined us at VIG years ago, there was little doubt he was a confident young man to begin with. Our philosophies of patience and positivity have contributed to his confidence and to that of so many of Maui’s youth. Those aren’t our words. Those are the words we hear from our families just about every day.

Bring your copy of this ad when you enroll for your first-ever class with us, and it’s worth one free afternoon session of “School’s Out, Camp’s In” gymnastics camps, available any day your school is not in session. Camps available for ages 4 & up. Offer valid through March 27, 2015.
