Across the island you can find many activities to enjoy that will get you outside! Check out a local festival. The Haiku Ho’olaule’a & Flower Festival takes place each April in Haiku, Hawaii. This free festival features live music, local arts and crafts, farmers market, historical exhibits, floral making contests, keiki zone, food trucks and more! All proceeds go toward the keiki of Haiku School, Boys and Girls Club, and the Haiku Community Association. Visit www. haikuhoolaulea.org for more information. Another local festival is the East Maui Taro Festival in Hana, Hawaii. This festival is rich in Hawaiian tradition and features farmers market, poi pounding, food booths, music, hula, arts and crafts, and more! Visit www.tarofestival.org for more information. Drive Upcountry to see the beautiful jacaranda trees. These amazing lavender blossoming trees show off their glory each spring along many of Maui’s upcountry roads. It’s worth the
drive to Kula, and you can stop at Grandma’s Coffee House in Keokea for a cup of coffee along the way. Go on an outrigger canoe tour. Getting out on the Pacific on an outrigger, just as islanders did in centuries past, will give you an experience to last a lifetime. You may even spot some whales in the earlier spring months! If you don’t want to do a tour, but would still enjoy the experience of a canoe paddle, check out Mana’olana Pink Paddlers, a local non-profit canoe club that meets at Sugar Beach on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Visit www.manaolanapinkpaddlersmaui.org for more information. Maui is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors, so be sure to put on your adventurer cap and get out in the fresh air and sunshine this spring! JP

Our Keiki PARENTING
Teaching Kids to Think for Themselves Listen to your mom and dad. Do as your teacher says. So much of life for young children in our culture involves respecting authority and following established norms in the classroom and on the playground, that we can miss out on giving them a necessary skill: independent thought. Fortunately for us as parents, it’s one that can be readily learned and is enjoyable to teach. Here are some ways you can instruct your child to think for himself. Encourage questions. Children are naturally curious. Just think of a three- or four-year-old’s favorite word: Why. At times it can be irritatingly incessant. But rather than shut down their inquisitiveness, let it flow. It demonstrates that you believe in the importance of free thinking. Ask questions. When your child is faced with a decision, don’t always suggest answers. Instead, ask them what options they have. Then continue probing about your child’s reasons for or against each one. Help them come to their own conclusion. Affirm independent choices. Start young. When your child picks mismatched clothes for school, don’t make him change. When he would prefer not to play with a certain friend, accept his preference. This doesn’t mean you can’t delve into the reasons, just do so respectfully. Foster self-confidence. Many times children are afraid of diverging from the majority because they don’t want to be wrong. They are afraid of failing or appearing unknowledgeable. A foundation of selfconfidence acts as a bolster against this fear.
Get their opinion. Occasionally, when faced with your own decisions or family decisions, ask your child for input and suggestions. Seeking their opinion shows them that you value their thoughts. It allows them to experience making a contribution by being themselves and thinking independently. And don’t be afraid of letting your child follow the crowd once in a while. A sense of belonging to something bigger than oneself is important. Above all, model independent thinking. Rather than shielding your kids from your opinions, share your ideas during family conversations; this teaches kids how to reason and express themselves respectfully. LK

How to Change Negative Patterns of Behavior By KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.
O
ften we think of “bad behavior” in terms of poor compliance and needing more discipline. While a child may use behavior to test boundaries, often it is the child’s way of communicating something important to you. Your child may have big feelings that she doesn’t know how to express, and so it comes out in what seems to be mystifying behavior. It is first important to establish, what is the pattern of behavior? Does it happen at a certain time of day? Or a certain time during the week? Or in particular contexts? For example, you notice that tantrums happen only during the morning routine, or only on Mondays, or just on P.E. days. Have there been changes in your child’s routine? Next, you need to consider your child’s temperament. If you have a sensitive child, a small change like rushing the morning routine by 15 minutes may be dysregulating. Unexpected changes in schedule may also cause a negative behavioral response. If your child is highly active, having to sit for a meal may be nearly impossible, even with a large number of rewards or consequences. If your child becomes tired or overwhelmed as the week progresses, you may see more challenging behaviors at the end of the week as your child’s tolerances decrease. Finally, you need to consider your own responsiveness to tricky behaviors. If you find that you escalate with your child, you may be fueling the behavior. If you just ignore the behavior, your
child may use bigger behavior to get your attention. Does your child get lots of hugs, do they get to avoid a demand, or do they get a break? Sometimes behavior is increased (or decreased) by the reaction it receives. Your goal is not to interrupt or “break” behavioral patterns, but rather, to first try to figure out what is underlying the behavior? Once you have a theory (or two), you can then create a strategy to change it. If, for example, you feel that your child is sensitive and has a hard time with changes, try creating a more consistent schedule. If you feel that your child is trying to get attention, then set designated time in the day for dedicated interaction with your child so that they don’t have to use attention-seeking behaviors. If your child is pushing boundaries, then begin to make a plan before activities where the boundaries are laid out, and then follow through with them. If your child can’t settle down at night, maybe he needs more designated physical play during the day. If your child has an emotional need, it may take more detective work to figure out, and it sometimes helps to have a counselor. Here are some reminders: • Behavior is often a way to communicate a need. • When you have a behavior you don’t want (hitting), identify the behavior you do want (using your words) and focus on that. • Avoid vague descriptions of behavior, such as “act respectfully.” Be specific – for instance, “When I call your name please stop and turn around to look at me.” • Remember to positively reinforce the behaviors you want!

Our Keiki TeCHNoLoGY
Growing Up Online: Handling Distractions & Multitasking With many teachers moving toward online collaboration, and some schools using Internet-dependent laptops for students’ schoolwork, the amount of time our children need to be online is only likely to increase. This means we need to be training them to handle the challenges of an Internet workspace – in particular, the challenge of distractions and multitasking. One method for handling the distractions inherent in an online environment is to have your child schedule breaks. Suggest that she work on one assignment for a set time, maybe 15 minutes. Knowing the duration eases the pressure of having to focus. When time is up, she can enjoy break by messaging a friend or watching a short video. An even better break occurs offline, such as taking the dog for a short walk. With group projects and collaborative environments, it can be especially challenging to stay focused. But that same collaboration can offer accountability. When he needs focused time away from the group for a different task, such as finishing a reading assignment, suggest that your child announce his departure and its purpose to the group. “I’m signing off for twenty minutes to finish my history reading.” Knowing the group will be expecting a report on his progress acts as an incentive to complete what he said he would.
The word “multitasking” originated in computer science to describe a machine running more than one process at a time. While humans can perform more than one activity at a time, researchers have found that our effectiveness at any one task drops when we add another alongside it. For this reason, it’s important to coach your child on limiting the number of pursuits she undertakes at a time. Have your child turn off notifications and pop-ups while working on a project. Train her to take out only what she needs at the moment, and to open just the applications required for the task at hand. For teens writing papers and lab reports, show them how to utilize “distraction-free” modes found in some programs. Training children to handle these challenges will help them be strong Internet citizens in the future. LK

Our Keiki BILINGUAL
Raising a Bilingual Child
R
aising a bilingual child is both marvellous and challenging. Enough studies and scholarly articles have demonstrated how speaking more than one native language benefits children’s cognitive development. As parents of three (now grown up) bilingual children, my British husband and French self could only observe on a daily basis how amazingly rich their world was - linguistically, culturally and emotionally. People often commented on how fascinating it was that our children could start speaking with us in one language and switch to the other language, even mid-sentence. In our family, it was just normal. I remember someone asking our daughter, when she was four years old, what it was like for her to be ‘half French, half English.’ I was astonished to hear the conviction with which she replied, “me not half, me both.” For us parents, bilingualism was overwhelming, both in a good and in a more unsettling way. As our children grew with two identities, we could not really keep up with that second, foreign side of them. And yes, at times we felt some-

what inadequate. For us parents, bilingualism was overwhelming, both in a good and in a more unsettling way, for as our children grew with two identities, we could not really keep up with that second, foreign, side of them. And, yes at times we felt somewhat inadequate. Like for many parents of bilingual children, it was not a calculated choice; the situation was what it was. In fact, as is often the case, our first child took longer than ‘average’ to master the pronunciation of certain consonant clusters. At school, this was seen as a developmental problem, and we were referred to a speech therapist who advised us to stick to just one language at home! This was clearly not a practical solution we could even envisage. Language is not just something you purposely do; it is acquired in a social environment (for a child: his family and school friends), doing what you do and being who you are. And one’s identity is forever evolving. Our children have very naturally adopted both languages and a lot more in their lives since, plus they have taught my husband and me so much! Needless to say that our eldest, now an adult, can not only pronounce all French and English sounds, but has actually become a linguist and is also fluent in Spanish. Bilingual children are no more likely to have long lasting speech problems than monolingual children. So, here’s my advice: Don’t give up, stick to who you are (your language, your positive family values). But also, do not be afraid of change. And of course, enjoy! EB together to support school gardens and inspire our future farmers, chefs, teachers, scientists, and community leaders. Guests will enjoy dishes made from local and school garden grown ingredients, fine wine, live music and ocean sunset views. All guests must be 21+ to attend this event. Grow Some Good is a nonprofit community program dedicated to creating hands-on, outdoor learning experiences that cultivate curiosity about natural life cycles, connect students to their food sources, and inspire better nutrition choices. Baby Keiki News • Trends • Tips Babymoon: Pregnant & Due For A Vacation “A baby will make love stronger, days shorter, nights longer, bankroll smaller, home happier, clothes shabbier, the past forgotten, and the future worth living for.” -Author Unknown Life is full of happy expectations when you’re pregnant. Whether this is your first baby or another addition to your growing family, you know that change is just around the corner. In recent years, a “babymoon” has become part of the pregnancy journey for many. A babymoon is almost like a second honeymoon before the baby arrives – a time for you to connect with your spouse and relax together. If you’re due for a babymoon vacation yourself, here are some tips to prepare for it. If you live on Maui, why not have a staycation? Hawaii is a dream destination, so taking advantage of the beauty and activities you have at your doorstep could be the best of both worlds: saving money and soaking up world-class luxury. Many hotels and resorts offer kama’aina rates, allowing you to stay at a reduced rate. Or, you may want to explore a different part of the island and get away from the normal cares of the day. Maui’s landscape offers endless opportunities for capturing those special pregnancy photos. If you want to explore a little further, you could island hop and spend some much needed R&R time on a different Hawaiian island, as they each have their own unique “flavor.” Check Groupon if traveling to Oahu, as you may find great deals on restaurants, spas and other activities! Also, check online for special events happening on the island, such as concerts, festivals, art shows, etc. Whether your idea of a babymoon includes time at the spa and sipping mocktails, or adventuring on a hike and snorkeling in the ocean, when you live in Hawaii the dream babymoon awaits you! JP ties continue at Kalama Park with an exciting lineup of entertainers, including John Cruz, HAPA, Amy Gilliom, Marty Dread and more. The Keiki Carnival at World Whale Day features bouncy rides and other fun activities. Plus, there will be plenty of snack booths and food trucks for all tastes. World Whale Day is also home to the original “Made on Maui” artisan fair. Maui residents and visitors alike can enjoy World Whale Day for only $5 per adult. Admission is free for keiki ages 12 and under. The Parade of Whales is free and open to all. Free off-site parking and shuttles to Kalama Park will also be available. Baby Keiki First Foods
The “Brave New World” of Solid Food By Lisa Kimura
O
ne of the most fun “firsts” is baby’s first food. Messy and photo-worthy, it’s always a memorable experience, whether baby enjoyed it or not! The first question many parents ask is when to introduce solids to their little one. While it’s fun to start exploring with food, it’s even more important that baby is developmentally ready. Both the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend nothing but breast milk until six months old; this means no food, or even water, as breast milk provides all the hydration and nourishment a child needs during this important period.
at a time every few days, watching carefully for any signs of an allergic reaction. Steer clear of highly acidic fruits like citrus and pineapple, but many other “backyard fruits” like mango and banana are great options. Puree fruits and veggies until smooth, or allow baby to grasp handfuls of sliced fruit or steamed vegetables to practice self-feeding. Remember: avoid honey, cow’s milk and soy milk before age one, and if allergies run in your family, check with your pediatrician to determine the best strategy for introducing allergenic foods. Exploration through food is important: texture, taste and temperature give babies a multi-sensory experience. Let your child hold her own utensils and practice picking up food. Even if it looks like a mess, don’t worry; it gets easier, and baby is a full participant in the process, constantly learning about this brave new world of solids.
In addition to age, look for other signs that your baby is ready for solid foods. Can baby hold his or her head in a steady, upright position? Can your baby sit without support? If you answered yes and you have the OK from your baby’s doctor, it’s time to get started! What should you feed first? In the past, pediatricians often recommended rice cereal as a first food. It’s easy to digest and bland in flavor, which helps baby get used to new textures. However, processed white rice flour cereal lacks much in the way of nutrition or fiber. Don’t be afraid to experiment with vegetables, fruits and proteins instead. In fact, poi, which is high in calories, easily digestible, and an excellent source of calcium and iron, has been called the “perfect” baby food. Start with 2–3 tablespoons per feed, increasing gradually to one-half a cup of food at mealtimes. Introduce new foods carefully, one

CREATE A MEANINGFUL BABY BLESSING “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be!” - Robert Munsch
As parents, we have a strong desire to protect our babies and to bless them. While some choose to christen in a church or participate in a baby dedication, others have found that having a personalized “baby blessing” is another option for celebrating their newborn. Here are a few ways you can create a meaningful blessing, and share it with loved ones and your baby. A baby blessing is a time to celebrate and a time to share your love and wisdom. Like most gatherings, the first decision you will need to make is where to hold your baby blessing. Perhaps you prefer a community center, home, church or even the beach. Any place that fits your needs and allows your guests to feel comfortable will work. Next, you may want to pick a theme. Search Pinterest for ideas that speak to your heart and family’s values. It’s a special, almost sacred time as you bless your baby, so finding a theme that coincides with the mood you want to set is a must. Then you will want to create a timeline for the gathering. Questions to consider: Will you be baptizing your baby? Will you have an officiant for special readings? Will you simply ask friends and
family to speak? Will you write your own pledge to the baby? This is your family’s day, so make it one that reflects you. Something fun you may want to include is a questionnaire for the guests to fill out. “Wishes for Baby” that includes hopes for the baby’s future would be a cute way to have your loved ones participate. Another special activity you may include is having them sign a special note to your baby on a framed matte that will later have the baby’s portrait. Perhaps music or hula could be included as well. It’s your family’s special day to welcome your baby into this world. May it be all that you dreamed it could be! JP of Maui Powerhouse Gym in Kihei, Shooting Stars Dance offers hiphop classes for both boys and girls ages 5–12 as well as a preschool creative movement class for ages 3–5. You can also catch their dancers performing at the Kihei 4th Friday event.
Shooting Stars Dance Shooting Stars Dance is expanding in 2016! Classes will now be held at two locations in Kihei. Shooting Stars Dance, directed by Neeve McGrath, was established in the Summer of 2014 to provide keiki dance opportunities on the South shore of Maui. Based out
Starting in January 2016, their business will expand to include an afterschool program at Kamali’i Elementary School. Ballet, jazz and hiphop dance for two different age groups will be offered. Ages 5–7 and ages 8–12. The on-campus setting of their new endeavor makes it very convenient for parents and students alike. Shooting Stars Dance is very excited to bring more arts education opportunities to the talented keiki of Maui. How To Be a Great Parent Coach You sign your child up to play a sport. And then comes the phone call: the team is short of coaches. Would you consider helping out? If you want to say yes, but worry that you don’t have what it takes, we’ve rounded up a list of winning qualities to help you out. A great parent coach is: Sincere. Don’t say “great job” to every kid as they come off the field. It becomes meaningless with overuse. Instead, offer genuine praise and heartfelt feedback. Even a blunder during the game doesn’t sting as much when the coach shows she feels the pain with you. Upbeat. No matter how unfair the referee may be that day, or how much the team is losing by, a great coach finds the bright spots. In such situations, you can help the kids by dialing down your objectives. For example, instead of asking your team to score, challenge them to work on their passing game (“let’s see how many passes in a row we can get this time”).
Montessori School of Maui: Monster Yard Sale SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH // 8AM–1PM 2933 BALDWIN AVE., MAKAWAO
Encouraging. Use the sandwich approach when offering feedback about a player’s performance during a game, and while running drills during practice. Point out a positive: “You ran hard down the field. I can see you’re fast.” Express what needs improvement: “Next time I’d like to see you try it a little slower, and see if that helps your aim while shooting on goal.” Finish with another affirmation: “I’ll bet you’ll see a difference right away.” Firm. Set boundaries and hold to them. Nothing shortchanges eager players like kids who won’t cooperate and a coach who won’t run the show. Explain your expectations at the beginning of each practice, along with how you will handle non-cooperation. Then follow through. And if you are simply an assistant coach, do your best to aid the head coach in keeping practice on track. Being a great coach for your child’s team isn’t a matter of being proficient at the sport yourself. It’s about being a grounded leader, role model and mentor for kids. LK The Monster Yard Sale is back! Get ready for the Montessori School of Maui’s 2nd Annual Monster Yard Sale, on Sat., Feb. 27th, 8am–1pm. Bring your friends and family to enjoy a morning of shopping of “Gently Used and Totally Awesome Stuff” in support of the school’s educational mission of “growing global citizens.” The “Monster Yard Sale” is a wonderful way to support the sustainability of our beautiful island by reusing toys, clothes, sporting goods, furniture and other household items. All proceeds benefit the educational programs and facilities at the Montessori School of Maui. Refreshments will be available for purchase. We are still accepting donations! For more info, please contact Maile at mailiel@momi.org. The Montessori School of Maui is located at 2933 Baldwin Avenue in Makawao and serves young people 18 months through 8th grade.

How to Stay Cold-Free
T
he person before you at the grocery checkout coughs, then sneezes before swiping their credit card. You pay cash to avoid touching a contaminated card reader. You have no desire to catch what they have. With more than 200 viruses known to cause it, the common cold can seem unavoidable, especially if you have kids. But there are steps you can take to reduce your chances of being infected. Wash hands. The most effective method for preventing infection by a cold virus is to scrub your hands with soap and water frequently—especially when you have been out in public, or in proximity to another person suffering from symptoms. In a pinch, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Don’t touch. Avoid touching areas of your body that can absorb the virus into your system – your eyes, nose and mouth. It can be difficult
to remember, especially if you are seized with a sudden itchy eye; hence, the importance of hand washing. Wipe down. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases notes that “rhinoviruses can survive up to three hours outside the nasal passages on inanimate objects and skin.” They suggest cleaning surfaces in your home or office space with a disinfectant when someone is sick with a cold, to prevent the spread of infection. sleep well. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that those who slept more than seven hours each night were less likely to succumb to colds. Their sleepy counterparts saw a three-fold increase in colds, compared to those who got enough z’s. Give your body an immunity boost from a good night’s rest. Exercise regularly. Studies show that exercise does more than make you strong. It can also reduce the occurrence (and intensity) of colds. Dr. David Nieman, a professor of health and exercise science at Appalachian State University, says that his study recorded a 43% reduction in sick days due to colds, and a reported 40% drop in symptoms experienced, among those who walked briskly for 35-45 minutes, 5 days per week. Cold season is here. But there are ways to keep viruses at bay. LK

Are You Hovering Too Close to Your Kids? “Helicopter parenting” has become synonymous with “bad parenting” in our society. But truth be told, most parents have tendencies to stick close in one area of life or another with their kids. If you want to know where you may be hovering, consider the fears you have for your child – that they won’t be “successful” in adulthood, that they won’t develop close friendships, or that they will encounter physical dangers. Hovering tendencies follow our fears. Check out the list below for other warning signs of helicopter parenting. You know you’re coming too close to the no-fly zone with your kids if: You find yourself checking their grades online every day. Over-attentiveness to your child’s academic life may make them feel you don’t believe they can handle it themselves. This sense of inadequacy, combined with high parental expectations, can lead to increased stress (and potentially decreased performance) for your child. You have a habit of intervening in social settings. You want the best for them, but your presence may be pushing others away from your child. Unless your child’s safety is an issue, follow your child’s lead when it comes to their social life.
23rd Annual Haiku Ho’olaule’a & Flower Festival SATURDAY, APRIL 23RD // 9AM–3PM HAIKU SCHOOL & COMMUNITY CENTER
Encourage them to invite other children over. And model proper social behavior. Then let go. You regularly “rescue” your child. Taking forgotten lunches or homework, time and again, circumvents your child’s learning process. When you allow your child to experience a natural consequence like being hungry for an afternoon or taking a late grade, it acts as a deterrent in the future. But if your child comes to expect you will be there to “fix it” for them, they will not learn responsibility. The pains of childhood mistakes serve to prepare them for the inevitable pains of adult life. Be there to console and commiserate, not to bail out. We can’t protect our kids from everything. But we can offer to be available should our kids need us, and let them decide when they want us to step in. This turns out to be a more effective model for helping those we love to succeed. LK
The Maui community is invited to bring their families and lawn chairs, and spend the day with the Haiku School and Haiku community. This year we are celebrating family and bringing the festival closer to the school grounds. Come and enjoy fabulous live entertainment, artisan marketplace, culinary delights from local restaurants, the famous Haiku Bake Sale, one of the most unique silent auctions on Maui, floral design and lei making contests, a Haiku historical display, a book swap and much more. There will be plenty of activities for the Keiki to enjoy including face painting, pony rides, a cake walk, bubble station, Hawaiian crafts, bouncy castles and the one and only Mauisaurus Miniature Golf. The event is FREE and open to the public. Money raised helps support Haiku Elementary School, Haiku Community Association and Boys & Girls Club Maui-Haiku. Mahalo. Communication for Lasting Relationships Appreciate Make a point of noticing when the other person does something you appreciate. Be specific about which attributes, attitudes or actions you value about them. When conflict arises:
i
t’s no secret that stable, long-term relationships – whether with a spouse or with children – take a lot of work. But the payoffs are more than worth it. There are ways of communicating that ensure better, more enjoyable relationships. Focus We live in a highly distracted age. It’s not uncommon to see couples at a restaurant glancing at their cell phones, texting, or surfing social media during dinner. But while we’re busy keeping up with all of the other people in our lives, we’re missing out on connecting with the person in front of us. Putting away the things that are distracting, and focusing on the immediate conversation, goes a long way to communicate attentiveness – literally and emotionally.
• Don’t be afraid to inject humor to lessen the tension. But try not to direct it at the person with whom you are arguing. • Avoid being defensive. Seek to understand the other person’s perspective. Refrain from leveling criticisms at others; instead, share concerns rationally and unemotionally. Relationship expert John Gottman identifies both defensiveness and criticism as behaviors that are corrosive to relationships. • Demonstrate affection – a gentle touch, a kind look, an endearing word (even when you aren’t feeling affectionate) can diffuse heated emotions. It’s a reminder that you are for each other and not against. Good relationships are key to a happy life. Communicate well to keep them healthy. LK
Listen Make an effort to be an active listener. Ask questions that probe deeper. Reflect back what you are hearing, including any emotions you sense underneath the words. Allow silence between your comments and questions to encourage the other person to speak up. Enjoy Talk about fun stuff, too – not just school (with the kids), or the kids (with your spouse). Connect with them by bringing up topics that interest you both – a TV show you enjoy watching together, or a new fact you learned that they would appreciate.

Date Night Ideas: Enjoy Maui “Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.” -Oscar Wilde
You can keep that love ablaze in your heart by spending time with your significant other on specially planned date nights. Once children come, it can be difficult to find the time (and good childcare) to nourish your relationship, but it is well worth it. Below are a few ideas to help you enjoy the beautiful island of Maui on your date nights. Take a beach walk. You have heard it a million times, but taking a walk on the beach is the classic romantic date when you live near the ocean. The waves crashing, the sun setting – it all creates a great atmosphere for relaxation, conversation and fun. Play tourist and take advantage of great deals at local happy hours in restaurants and bars. Often, places offer half-price specials and live music, so your tummy and your wallet will be happy! Go to one of maui’s Friday night Town Parties! Located at various towns throughout the month, you will find food vendors, local crafters, live music and more. Explore a different area of the island. Go on a hike for a daytime date, or grab a shave ice and sit under the Banyan Tree in Lahaina.
Take an art class together to learn a new hobby and get creative together. Head to the local bookstore or library to read books to your hearts’ delight. Take a free ukulele lesson at the Shops at Wailea on Wednesday nights. Take a cooking class together. Check the maui Family magazine calendar for fun events throughout the season. There are many ways to enjoy a date night with your better half. So, grab your calendars and plan one this week. You will benefit from the time together, your children will benefit from having close, loving parents, and your entire family will reap the reward of love nourished on a regular basis. JP

Farmer’s Markets on Maui “The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no life.” -Wendell Berry
W
ith Maui’s days filled with sunshine and touches of rain, vegetables and fruits grow in abundance on this little island in the Pacific. While farmers markets have grown in popularity across the nation in recent years, the local fruit stand, complete with mangoes and an honor system in place for payment, has been going on in Hawaii for decades. Whether you live on Maui or you are simply passing through, making a stop at a farmers market, or two or three, needs to be on your “do now” list. Wondering when the farmers markets happen on Maui? Here are some to check out. Please note this list is not exhaustive by any means. Also, be sure to look up the farmers markets to confirm current days/times. Westside (Lahaina/Ka’anapali) • Honokowai’s Farmers market maui, located on 3636 Lower Honoapi’ilani Road, Lahaina. • Napili Farmers market, located in a parking lot at Honoapi’ilani Highway and Napilihau Street, Lahaina (near Maui Preparatory School). south maui (Kihei/Wailea) • Lipoa street Farmer’s market, located at 95 Lipoa Street, Kihei. Central (Kahului) • maui Tropical Plantation, located at 1670 Honoapi’ilani Highway, Wailuku. • Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center, located at 275 W. Northshore (Paia/Haiku) • La’a Kea Community Farm, located at 639 Baldwin Avenue, Paia. Upcountry (makawao/Pukalani/Kula) • maui Nui Farms, located at 151 Pulehunui Road, Kula. • Upcountry Farmers market is every Saturday, located at the Kulamalu Town Center on 55 Kiopa’a Street, Pukalani. • makawao Farmers market, located at 3654 Baldwin Avenue, Makawao. • Kula Country Farms, located right off Kula Highway, a few yards past mile marker 13 (across from Rice Park) in Kula. Need Help Paying for Preschool? Get assistance from the Preschool Open Doors program. It’s easy! The Preschool Open Doors (POD) program is a statewide child care program operated by the Department of Human Services that provides subsidies to eligible low- and moderate-income families to pay tuition for up to one year at any of the State’s licensed 424 preschools. The POD subsidy provides children whose families might otherwise not be able to afford preschool the opportunity to gain essential skills to be successful in school and in life. To qualify, your family must meet these requirements: A) Age of Child: Priority will be for children born between August 1, 2011–July 31, 2012 who are underserved or at-risk children. Families whose children were born between August 1, 2011–July 31, 2012 should apply for POD services. B) Gross family income is within allowable income limits. Families are income-ranked on a sliding scale to ensure funds are distributed to those most in need. If eligible, you may still have to pay some monthly preschool costs.

A
utism is characterized by delays in developmental milestones. These delays occur in social interaction and communication, and are often concurrent with repetitive and problematic behaviors. Parents should work with their medical doctor to make sure their child is reaching developmental milestones. Early diagnosis and treatment can yield significant results in the development of your child. The diagnosis and treatment of Autism is more accessible today than ever before. The most evidence-based and researched treatment of Autism, is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Graduate school programs throughout the United States teach and train people in ABA. These individuals become Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) and spend their careers making a difference in the lives of people with Autism. The scope of
ABA services is vast. They can be center-based or occur in home and community settings. Behavior analysts target behaviors to help each individual reach his or her maximum potential. Since January 1, 2016, a new State law expands the accessibility and quality of care for individuals with Autism. This law requires private insurance companies in the State of Hawaii to pay for medically necessary ABA therapy for children with Autism. Each covered child up to age 15 is eligible for $25,000 annually for ABA therapy. These ABA programs must be created and overseen by a licensed BCBA in the State of Hawaii. The first step starts with your primary care physician and your insurance company. Contact them to set an appointment to discuss a current diagnosis or concerns about your child’s development. Your insurance provider will be able to direct you to agencies and individuals in your community who are licensed BCBAs and can help create a program for your child. Beau Laughlin, M.S. Divorce & Living in Separate Homes By miTCH BERmAN, LmFT There are many, many families with children whose parents have divorced, live in separate homes and have divided up parenting responsibilities. There is the book, Mom’s House, Dad’s House, by Isolina Ricci, Ph.D., which discusses how to set up two separate but equal homes. I think about the purple family movie from the family court and how the purple transforms into a red family and a blue family as the parents move apart, though eventually as others join, the family becomes a rainbow family—certainly a positive view, which may or may not be achieved. That would be sweet when family members are getting along and parents have become friends or at least good business partners. Yes, in divorced families, there is a business relationship between the parents with the job of parenting and raising their children. The romantic relationship has been officially dissolved; however, the reality of letting go and “grieving the loss” may take years of anger and resentment, and a therapist or mentor may be needed. Many people avoid the grieving and the growth and move along, carrying the weight of the loss into the next relationship, hoping for better results. For the children also, there is loss and grief; they need to be able to express uncomfortable thoughts and feelings as family is so important. The family has moved from being one family to two families and each family needs to work to become coherent in itself, while being respectful of the other family. If there has been domestic violence or emotional or physical abuse, there may be little basis for sharing custody, though the court is not always sensitive to the effect of these dynamics, which certainly affects the trust and feeling in the family. Given the situation where the parents have decided to separate and physical custody is shared, two families are now present. Hopefully, the children are comfortable in both homes and there is a respect between parents, who hopefully recognize that being a good teammate with the other parent is very important to the growth, development and self-esteem of their children. Virginia Satir (the mother of family therapy) recognized that while children may be loved by both parents, they scan the relationship between the
parents and their self-esteem is affected by what they see going on between parents. So again, how the parents treat each other is most critical. As parents it is helpful to be aware of how we view relationship and how we have learned to connect, as this is affected by our growing up in our families of origin. It has been immensely useful for me to look at recurring patterns and grieve the losses of the past to change behaviors and perhaps modify the patterns running from generation to generation. At the same time we need to strengthen our families by sharing positive time, meals and conversation. Asking ourselves, with parents going first (to model positive behavior at the dinner table): “What is the highlight of your day?” or “What is the best thing that happened today?” Perhaps a pule, a prayer, a song and then doing “Highlights.” We do tend to be experts on what’s not going right and those things will come out soon enough, so take some time to create some positive feeling first. “What is the best thing that happened to you today?” My son would often bring up the previous meal, so he would have to add something else as well. A beautiful sunrise or sunset or a good conversation with a friend is a good awareness as we train our minds to scan for the positive--inspiring interactions and events. The bottom line is to build positive, open and loving relationships, to enjoy your families and the changes and the growth and the love. T
he annual Valley Isle Keiki Fest provides children and their families in our community free fun activities while offering products and food at a low cost. This family-oriented event is held at the Great Lawn of the University of Hawaii-Maui College. This event promotes a positive, safe and healthy environment for Hawaii’s Keiki. Keiki Fest features activities for all ages. In addition to the usual ono food and great entertainment, conjoined organizations have arranged cooking demonstrations by 4-H, resources for parents, vendors, and even a car show. However, there is much more in store for the keiki with
jumping castles, games, prizes, a bike safety course, a bike giveaway, and the much loved shave ice stand. Because of generous supporters, vendor fees, donations and funds generated from the food court, admission to the Keiki Fest is FREE. The event begins at 11 a.m. and runs to 4 p.m. April is classified as “The Month of the Young Child,” bringing families together globally. Maui’s ‘ohana has been celebrating the festival since 2004. The event attracts over 6,000, about half of which are children. Hawaii continues to be one of the most ideal places to raise a child, thanks to various organizations island-wide that provide great opportunities, such as the Keiki Fest, to enhance the wellbeing of Maui’s youth. The Kiwanis Club of the Valley Isle, Maui 4-H Organization, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui and the County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation have all associated efforts in the Keiki Fest celebration. Keiki Fest brings the community and families together and gives residents the great opportunity to celebrate youth. Attend as a parent, a child, a supporter, or just unleash your inner child for a day of fun for a good cause.

Rhythmic Gymnastics on Maui Rhythmic Gymnastics is an Olympic sport that was introduced to the games in 1984. It is a combination of ballet and acrobatics, where flexibility, poise and grace come together with dexterity and performance. Girls learn how to twirl the ribbon, clubs, hoop, ball and rope while dancing, turning, leaping, jumping and tumbling! The European origin of the sport is honored as the music chosen for training and performance typically is classical with a rich Russian/European sound. The beautifully ornate leotards that are traditional for performances create a special and unique chance for girls to dress up and really feel the part. Coach Sue Martin, a professional member of the USAG, recently introduced Rhythmic Gymnastics into the State of Hawaii in September 2015. Her endorsement as the State Chair makes her the “go to” authority in Hawaii. There are currently 20 girls training in the sport here on Maui, seven of them are registered competitors. It is now time to expand the rhythmics program to allow more girls the opportunity to get involved. Rhythmics is currently established in Lahaina, with Saturday afternoon classes; and Rhythmics will be expanding to Kihei in March, with enrollment happening immediately. If you are interested in finding out more about getting your child enrolled into Rhythmics, check out either www.kidzonemaui.com or look up Hawaii Rhythmic Gymnastics on Facebook for the latest on what is happening here in the Islands. If you want to become an instructor, and have a ballet teaching background, we have video training and hands-on intern training opportunities available. Call 808276-9781 for details. Join the excitement of Rhythmic Gymnastics in Hawaii. Check out www.hawaiiansunsetinvitational. com as well, as history is being made with the first big Rhythmic Gymnastics competition to be held here in Hawaii, at the Lahaina Civic Center. Helping Young Ones Feel Safe in These Uncertain Times By PAUL siNGER HEAD OF sCHOOL AssETs CENTER FOR LEARNiNG
“Drop!” shouted my 5th grade teacher. Immediately, all 34 of us dropped to our knees, under our desks. This happened the first Friday of every month as a result of something called “The Cuban Missile Crisis.” At age 10, even though we didn’t know much about the crises, we did know that danger lurked if we failed to drop when told to do so. Today, although drop drills are mostly a thing of the past, we have preschool children participating in “live shooter” drills. A live shooter drill involves a stranger coming onto campus with a toy weapon and pretending to shoot the children. This developmentally inappropriate practice is more likely to cause young children to become incredibly anxious, with some showing symptoms of PTSD. As an educator, I can’t influence policy in schools other than my own, but I can encourage parents of young children to take a few simple steps to help their young ones feel safe and secure. The most obvious and easiest thing to do is to simply
turn off your television and radio when young children are around, and avoid discussing world affairs in their presence. Secondly, since young children feel safe when their environment is predictable, try to maintain the same household routine as always and the same daily schedule. Thirdly, insist that young children (birth to age 8) are not exposed to conversations about potential threats of violence while at school. Discourage the use of “live shooter drills.” If the school or daycare center won’t budge on this matter, ask to be given 24 hours notice of a pending drill, so you have the option of keeping your child home. Early childhood is a time for play. It’s that time in a child’s life when free exploration of the environment is essential. Young children need opportunities to enjoy fantasy play without a care in the world. Implementing these drills will only rob our keiki of their sense of security, and may cause irreparable harm to their psyches. Let’s stand up for our keiki and demand a more rational and pragmatic approach to the problem of violence in our society. Paul Singer became Head of School for Assets Center for Learning in 2008. Our Teens News • TreNds • Tips Rattled Brain Battle: Helping Your Teen Recover From a Concussion Every teen likes to believe they are tough, resilient and incapable of being sidelined. But when it comes to concussions, unfortunately, the opposite is true. Researchers found teens suffered longer and more substantially from the effects of a concussion than either adults or children. Combine typical teenaged irrepressibility and demanding schedules with an injured brain and parents can find themselves fighting an uphill battle toward their child’s recovery. Especially since teens can take two to three times as long to recover from a concussion as adults. Here are some tips for paving a smoother road – for you and your teen: Create a Healing Environment. Studies show that cognitive rest (limiting mental stimulation through ceasing activities such as use of media, reading, socializing, loud noise, and bright lights) helps speed concussion recovery. Cognitive rest happens to be the antithesis of normal teen life. Which is why providing a distraction-free space for your teen to heal is crucial. A bedroom conducive to rest, with darkening blinds, low to no music, and no computers, TV’s, or other screened devices is ideal. seek support. Being left alone in a dark, quiet room with nothing to do for long is not only boring, it can also heighten the risk of depression – a

potential side-effect in any concussion. Add an active teen to the mix and you have a recipe for melancholy. Which makes it important to balance physical and emotional needs in your recovery plans for your teen. Follow the doctor’s instructions for cognitive rest. But ask if it is okay for a friend to stop in for a short visit on occasion. See if your teen can emerge from recovery for a subdued dinner. Offer to read aloud to your teen for brief periods of time. Support is also important as your teen returns to school. He will likely be glad for the return to ‘normalcy,’ but should ease back into his coursework. Ask your doctor for a return-to-school plan to be given to teachers and administrators. Given the internal nature of the injury, your teen will look healthy, even though he is not. This makes it essential to communicate with your teen’s school, coaches and other extra-curricular leaders. If you face the challenge of helping a teen recover from a concussion, take comfort in knowing symptoms won’t last forever, that often your teen’s resistance is due to the injury itself, and that others have been in your shoes. self-organized events that bring people together to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Kupuna Brain Power! By HEATHER GREENWOOD-Junkermeier As a child, what did you do to build a healthy, strong brain? Did you explore the outdoors, read, write, ask a lot of questions, play hard, or get sweaty? All those activities are the same that keep kupunas’ minds strong and healthy. Which of them have you kept up as an adult? Did life get in the way of exploring, learning, and pushing the limits? The Alzheimer’s Association recently released 10 Ways to Love Your Brain. So what are those 10 ways? 1. Break a sweat. It doesn’t have to be a marathon – just 30 minutes of walking, biking, or swimming will do the trick. 2. Hit the books. Take advantage of Kaunoa’s very low cost classes for those 55+ or consider auditing a class at UHMC. 3. Butt out. Many programs can assist you to kick the cigarette habit. Talk to your doctor or call the tobacco quit line. 4. Follow your heart. Managing weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes help both the heart and the brain. 5. Heads up! Buckle up, wear a helmet when biking, and protect yourself from falls.

6. Fuel up right. A healthy diet benefits your heart, brain, and waistline. 7. Catch some ZZZ’s. Lack of sleep from insomnia, sleep apnea, or just getting to sleep late negatively impact the brain. 8. Take care of your mental health. This includes depression, anxiety and stress! 9. Buddy up. Social activities like volunteering and spending time with friends and family are excellent “brain medicine.” 10. Stump yourself. Learn new hobbies, play challenging games, or try new experiences. Overcoming the Fear of Water By JENN GLADWiN From GET GLAD mAUi Sometimes on this tiny island we can forget how natural and strong the instinct to fear water is. There are unique approaches to help kids overcome their fear and master their instincts in and out of the water. Here are three tips on how to help your child overcome a fear or resistance to water (or anything else really!). Grow the Good. Create an environment of small successes. Focus on what is going well, ignore the rest. Search for things to praise your child for surrounding the water. Even the smallest step is cause for great celebration. Confidence is the keystone. mantras Kids respond very well to mantras. They don’t have all the mental blocks that adults do, they don’t have stories about who they are and what they can do. When your child faces a difficult or scary situation, its works very well to: 1) Identify the feeling: “This is a very scary thing”. This is an important part of the process, to acknowledging and normalizing how they feel is the first step in overcoming that fear. 2) Give them a short mantra to tell their brain. One of my favorites is: “I am safe, I am strong”. The
most important part of this mantra is that they say it with conviction and confidence, even if they don’t feel it at first. I like to remind kids that they are the ones in charge of their mind. They get to tell it how to behave. Even just hearing the mantra from you will help them begin to believe it. Play Swim and water safety are very much about mindset and playfulness. When the fear takes over, it becomes very dangerous to swim. The best defence against this fear is to play. Find games, laugh, encourage and be silly. Kids learn how to respond to situations, by watching the people around them. If they have an example of play in the water, then they learn (or relearn) to also play in the water. Jenn Gladwin is the founder of Get Glad Maui, a fitness company dedicated to helping people find the Glad Life. She also runs Kelea Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to Nurturing, Inspiring and Empowering Women through Water Sports. GetGladMaui.com
